My grandfather, who is 86 years old, Skypes with me all the time. He’ll Skype with me when he’s eating some braciola that he got from the deli down the street. Sometimes he’ll Skype with me when he’s not wearing a shirt, and simply calling me to ask how ‘his pecs’ look because he’s about to Skype with one of his five girlfriends. Sometimes he Skypes me by accident when he’s trying to call Google (that’s what he does rather than search). I tell you this so when I say we still weren’t able to get the podcast going with Rudy and I together on the same call, you know we’re not coming to you from the 1950′s before such things as ‘conference call.’ We are all living in the present day. To be honest, I have to say this whole Daylight Savings Time thing is still affecting us. “So, I call in at 10:30 AM? Is that Eastern? Pacific? Central? Eastern pre-Daylight Savings? Post-Daylight Savings?” Do you see how many different possibilities there are? No wonder Bobby Fischer went mad. Who can keep track of all of these things? Rudy tried to call in after me, but Nick closed up shop, so it’s just me today. Well, me, Smokey and Jaywrong. They called in before me — separately, so I have no idea what they said because WE CAN’T FIGURE OUT CONFERENCE CALL?! I talked about some of my ancestry and Madeleine Albright, then we talked fantasy baseball. I’m assuming the other people on the podcast also talked fantasy baseball too. I’m merely assuming. Nick and I specifically go over my Justin Upton, Edwin Encarnacion and Ian Kinsler rankings. We talk briefly about the Fantasy Baseball War Room. I also handicap the Razzball Writers’ League and the Razzball Champions RCL. Maybe next week we can figure out a call-in number and an exact time. We shall see. Or not. Your choice. Anyway, here’s the Razzball podcast (still in 3 separate parts):

@Gareth: Your hitting looks slightly stronger on speed than power, not terribly so though… Your pitching looks wonky after Latos… Don’t like Cueto, and you have way too many bench bats and your bench arms aren’t great…
Hey Grey, would you please rate this team and let me know if anything special is missing?
Thanks

I recall your having put together a MR ranking post, but I can’t find it. Was that just fever dreaming?
These are all closer/MR posts: http://razzball.com/category/position/closers/
@Grey: I see, thanks.
@royce!: @royce!: Smokey has done some MR posts…
@Steve: Yeah, I thought that Grey had as well, but it turns out I was mistaken. I was trying to find something that ranked MR alone, for a league that counts holds. I usually just don’t draft any MR and figure it out in-season anyway…
@royce!: Rudy has projected Holds for the Steamer pitcher projections too.
I heard talk of Bourjos batting lead off, is that just crazy talk, you never know with the Sciossiopath
He could if he starts hot, but there’s no guarantee with the Sciosciapath…
Domonic Brown update!
Granted it’s only 60 AB’s, and Spring AB’s at that, but…for a former top prospect in all of MLB
that it still just 25 years old and has yet to get 200 AB’s in any season, his numbers are certainly eye opening. Throw in the fact that he now looks to be in position to get every day at bats and I’m loving the way the stars are aligning.
.400 BA
60 AB
20 R
5 HR
11 RBI
6/7 BB/SO
His plate discipline is impressive for a young player. Not only this Spring, but in the last 2 regular seasons he has also walked almost as much as he has whiffed. I really feel like the missing piece of the puzzle so far for him has been never being handed consistent every day at bats where he doesn’t have to worry if his name is on the lineup card each night. Here’s hoping he stays a sleeper in my drafts for at least another week.
http://razzball.com/spring-training-stats-what-do-they-mean-for-fantasy/
Shelby Miller done for the day: 4 innings 1 hit 1 bb 0 runs 3 k and only needed 23 pitches.
Kelly gave up just a hit in his first inning
We got a battle, y’all!
Olt to AAA. Too bad.
Olt, well…
I just got Niece for $1 in a Fangraphs Auction Draft. Did I overpay?
Who’s niece?
@Grey:
Better still, “whose niece?”
@Oaktown Steve:
…and how do I get in on that auction?
Yeah…
@Grey: ha autocorrect fail
$1 is great for Niese…
@Oaktown Steve: #8yearoldsdude
@AHill: Drafting Niese is the current market inefficiency?
Posted earlier about who I thought I’d get in my draft yesterday. Finally got in, and of course the draft went different than I thought it would. Would like a post mortem. I’m thinking I’m weak on pitching, but saves aren’t as valuable with our format: 10 team H2H ESPN 8×8 custom with OBP, XBH, Hits and Losses, QS, K/9. Here are my results:
C Sal Perez
1B Pujols
2B Zobrist
SS Tulo
3B Frazier
MI Rutledge
CI Allen Craig
OF Cargo
OF Bruce
OF Stanton
OF Cespedes
OF Beltran
UT K. Morales

B Gyorko

B D. Robertson
B D. Hernandez
@Robby D: Let me know if there are some post 300 ranking relivers you think would make a difference on my team.
Team looks a bit high on injury risk, but solid overall… Your pitching is a tad wonky…
@Grey: I’m with you on the injury risk, but my multi-position eligibility allows me to cover a lot of that.
For example, if Beltran goes down, I can drop Zobrist down and move Gyorko to 2nd, or move Craig down, Morales to corner, and anyone to Utility. Once Gyorko can qualify at 3rd it will give me some added flexibility as well.
I’m happy with the K-ability of my starters, and since I can stash Garza and got him in the 20th or 21st round, it wasn’t much risk. I’m just hurting on relief pitchers, but there was a run on all of them in the middle innings and I didn’t want to swim with the sheep. *mixed metaphor alert
@Grey: Is there anyone that is falling off draft boards who would be a good pickup on the saves coming out of spring?
There will be saves everywhere once the season starts… Every league is different… In some leagues, Santos or Frieri are available… They’ll have saves this year, for sure… In other leagues, you need to go to someone like David Hernandez or deeper…
@Grey: That works because I have Santos and Hernandez, and I was targeting with my 7th round pick (first 6 rounds are keepers and none of mine were pitchers) Wainwright and Bumgarner, but both went bang bang before my pick, so I went with Cespedes and Craig back to back (had the 10th, 11th pick because I won my league last year). Wasn’t able to pick up a pitcher till the 90th pick with Matt Moore.
Nice work to Smokee, Nick and Jay! Grey…well, let’s just say you’re a solid writer. It’s the effort that counts!
@Sky: I just can’t stop talking about Jennifer Lawrence.
I bet you we actually land her as a guest, and I die of multiple phantom orgasm’s the day before.
I’m already shedding a tear at your loss.
I’m totally with you, I only watched all of Winter’s Bone for the Bone she gave me…
So, I’m gonna call the nottie of the year in 2015 to be: Chloe Grace Moretz. I started watching ‘Hick’ via Netflix but turned it off when Chris Hansen showed up. It’s why I can’t/won’t watch Kick-Ass 2 until then.
@Sky: Shut up! Shut up! It’s JLa or nothing!
Well I didn’t say ‘it’ but I will admit to saying ‘it’ in 2015.
@Sky: Yeah noticed that to… Um, I don’t know you anymore.
You’ll know me in 2015 as a soothsaying pervert. I’m just ahead of my time.
@Sky: An overrated artsy fartsy film that sure was
@Wallpaper Paterson: Oh yeah? I only got about 20 minutes in before I clim…bed out of my couch to do something else. It seemed interesting before that, though.
BTW, I spent 2+ years teaching in SK. Damn I miss the food. I need to make Dalk-Kal-Bi here soon. It’s the bomb.
@Sky: Stop talking dirty.
@Nick the Podcast Host: I’ll let Jay chime in for an exact translation if he’s familiar but I think it means ‘hot meat you want inside you’.
BTW, it’s BEE-BIM-BOP (Bi-Bim-Bap spelling). Good stuff.
That’s the sound Pac-Man makes when he dies.
@Grey: That’s the sound you make when you order it from a street vendor. No lie: experience.
@Sky: No one name drops Kim Chee Fried Rice if they don’t know what’s up.
Canadians *can* be more cultured. At least in places like Vancouver and Toronto.
You say ‘more cultured’ I say ‘more stoned out of their gourds’.
@Sky: Err, you mean Dak galbi? You need some yellow spell check son.
Since I can actually read it in Korean and there’s a soft L/R whatever the hell that letter that looks like a 5 is, I like my version better. and the letter is either a G or a K depending on where you look. Ima school ya in your home language, son!
Sideways emoticon I’m not drinking any f**king Merlot!
@Grey: If they order Merlot I am f***ing leaving!
Love that movie more than Ike davis this year… no… more than Hosmer though.
Ha… Me too!
@Sky: Thanks! We’ve almost killed all the music!
I was a fan of the music, personally, but I understand. Different Strokes for different folks and Gary Coleman.
@Sky: Not to be contrarian, but I’m so thankful to you guys for giving the background music the Dom Deluise treatment and yelling “CUT”… Unfortch – my brain hears all background music first… intended foreground verbal bantering becomes white noise. (just think of all the humor I missed in the first couple of weeks!)
Not a worry on my end, everyone has their preferences. I can only say that since I wasn’t on there, you didn’t miss much!
@Sky: Worst part of J-La was I remember her on the Bill Engvall show.
I think the worst part about that isn’t the memory but the fact that Bill Engvall had a show.
@Sky: yea she was like the Kaley Cuoco character on that show with John Ritter.
Had to google that; 8 Simple Rules. I was in SK during the ‘height’ of that show’s ‘fame’. I’m thankful for these things.
12 team NL-only 5×5 roto auction league. Would you keep or throw back the following players?
Ian Desmond – $18
Aaron Hill – $22
Jonathon Niese – $15
Travis Snyder – $7
Kurt Suzuki – $5
I’d keep Niese and Desmond…
Sorry if I missed one, but are you planning on putting up any of your draft results with comments on your thought process for each pick? I find those helpful
thanks
Yeah, they’ll be coming…
For some reason this question is in my head. I don’t even own any of these pitchers but they’re on my WW…anyways how would you rank these 3 SP for potential this season? Milone, Tillman and Teheran?
You ranked them.
@Grey:
if you don’t mind me asking, why isn’t Teheran ranked over tillman? pitching against the NL East>AL East, no?
Because of Tillman’s 2012.
Hey, I just tried the online war room and noticed that no matter how many players are in the league setup, target counting stats remain the same. That doesn’t sound right.
Hmm… I’ll have the programmer look into it…
Grey strategy question – 5×5, 12 team ESPN, H2H, 9 pitchers, 12 start max/wk, 10 IP qualifier.
Which strategy would you do:
1) 9 SP – get K’s and W each week and build a strong offense.
2) 5 SP, 2/3 CL and rest MR – balanced approach
3) 1 top SP/ 2 lower SP (stream 1 SP for a total of 4), 2 CL, 3 MR- balanced with streamer
4) 3/4 mid closers, 5/6 MR – get sv, era and whip, punt w & K’s.
5) Some combination
I’d do #2… http://razzball.com/fantasy-baseball-auction-draft-fake-cash-values-rule-everything-around-me/

You did good… Nice balanced offense… Pitching looks very solid, Buehrle can be chucked to the wolves…
@Grey: Thanks for the comment. My biggest regret of the draft was taking Matt Holliday over Kinsler, esp now that my middles are so thin. But I was drafting for average early on and didn’t want .260 from Kinsler.
I hear ya…
Hey Grey,
Thoughts on my draft? It’s a 12 team h2h keeper. 7×7 with R, HR, RBI, Avg, Slg, BB, NSB, QS, BB, K, ERA Whip, Hold, NSV

Would love any input or thoughts on what I could do to improve. Thanks!
Looks like a decent hitting team…Peralta seems superfluous and I think you’re gonna have problems with injuries and pitching…
@Grey: Thanks Grey. Peralta is there just for a Holds guy with lots decent K/9. Also gonna and shop Grandy once he’s healthy and after a hot streak for some better starting pitching.
To add to Oaktown Steve’s comment up there, Kelly’s final line: 3 IP 8 hits 4 ER.
Podcast just keeps getting better and better.
Grey, I agree with your pick of RIV to win the Champion League. He’s won 2 leagues I was in, so that clinches it. Hope he concentrates on that league and slacks off in my league this year.
I was in the football league against Tehol, so I know he can’t be beaten.
And, I don’t think Oaktown Steve played in the RCL in 2012
Thanks! Yeah, RIV’s gotta be the one to beat there…
@VinWins:
It’s true I did not play in 2012. But when RIV was shilling for the league in the off-season I said hey, I’d love to be in and he said they were full. Then he came back and said, a couple guys dropped out we’d love to have you and I said cool. Then he came back later and said Grey told him to boot somebody so that Nick The Podcast guy could get in and I said that’s cool. Was looking forward to smoking you fools but no big. Then he came back later and said hey we had a drop out so you’re back in and I said cool. Then he came back again and said one of the guys who dropped out was trying to drop back in and that boomerang was begging and crying is the way I hear’d it. So RIV gave me the choice of staying in but I said nah that’s cool. I just want to point out that I was unbelievable gracious about the whole thing.
By the way, as much as a I love Reyes and toyed with picking him early I decided after running the scenarios that it’s tough to get enough power. I took Stanton and Upton in my 15 team NFBC league.
Finally, I hear a lot of South Jersey in your accent, Albright. Almost like a North Philly thing. Especially the “a”s like in “draft”.
@Oaktown Steve:
and by the way if I am in that league, how am I not the favorite, broham?

What do you think?
Team looks solid, but it’s a very shallow league so you’re gonna have to play the waiver game each week… You do have some injury risk with Cruz, Longo, Sandoval and Ortiz…
12 team H2H League. I’m keeping Heyward, Bum, M. Moore, and Rizzo.
Who are you picking with the 1st pick in the draft? Next available top players are Hamilton, Kinsler, Bautista, Reyes, A Gon, and Padroia? I also have the 6th overall pick in the draft. TIA
Kinsler…
No love for the team with McCutchen, Goldschmidt, and Morrow? Come on man. I agree that RIV has a solid roster, and Carey’s team looks pretty good as well.
@Big Magoo: Yeah, I imagine it will be a tough battle all the way.
@VinWins: What’s your opinion, Vin? You always have your finger on the pulse of Razzball nation.
@Big Magoo: Like I said, I’ve seen RIV up close, so I know he’s good. I also know you had a couple great teams last year, and Ryan Carey was impressive in the Expert League.
If I could look at a roster and figure out who was going to win, I’d probably be good enough to win once in a while.
@VinWins: Oh, I’m sure that you’re successful as well. You’re certainly the king of RCL updates! I always look forward to your league breakdowns.
@Big Magoo: Thanks! My teams were 82nd and 83rd overall, just behind Rudy, so I was certainly happy with that, but I didn’t win either league.

I know OF is weak link, I do not have a BU for Headley do I drop an OF or SP for Johnson, Francisco, Donaldson, or Pacheco? What do you think of the team?
You don’t have a what? Your hitting looks a lot less exciting than your pitching which isn’t a great place to be… You don’t need Strasburg and Lee…
@Grey: Sorry, don’t have a backup for Headley, I need to drop someone either SP Erasmo? or OF DeAza? for someone like Johnson, Francisco, Donaldson, or Pacheco.
Erasmo… Johnson…
@Grey: I also thought having Votto, Fielder and Goldschmidt would make up for OF weakness.
Panda and Freeze battling nagging injuries. Thinking about dropping Hardy (horrible this Spring) and picking up Machado as insurance. Good move? I also have Gyorko, who I was going to start at 2/s.
Thanks in advance.

Well, duh, what else could you have meant?
Any concerns with Beachy and Luebke being shut down early since they will be comin g off TJ surgery in june? Also what rd would you see Beachy going in very active keeper league?
They won’t be shut down early, they may not return on time…
Beachy: Around 150 overall…
Love the podcast.

Any strong thoughts on the following? Any of these guys worth stashing on the bench while waiting for relevancy?
Wil Myers, Domonic Brown, Aaron Hicks and Brett Wallace are all available in my league and I currently have one open bench spot with the rest of the spots taken by pitchers.
My fifth OF is Reddick; I have 3 util and two bench spots for the following: Rizzo, Espinosa, Escobar, Bonifacio and one of the above young guys.
Brown over Bonifacio…
I’m going to experience something new later this afternoon–drafting sober. Drank all weekend in Nashville (if you’re ever there, we’re opening a bar that’s going to kill it so stop by) and between that and flying, I caught a nasty cold. If this team fails, I’m blaming the South…and Southwest Airlines. And probably Jay Bruce, again…
You’re opening a bar in Nashville? Huh? How’s that gonna work with you in SD?
@Grey: it’s more that some friends are; they’re building it and working there when it opens, and we’re investing. As far as my being in SD, I think that will improve the bar’s bottom line considerably. After last weekend, I was thanking The Lord that the bar isn’t in SD.
Awesome! Congrats! Actually trying to get to Nashville (or Memphis) at some point this summer… Never been to either and have wanted to go for a long time…
@Grey: I highly recommend Nashville. They’ve got a pre-Portlandia Portland thing going on- lots of young people doing fun shizz- plus crazy good food. The bar is in East Nashville, which has a late 90s Silverlake vibe (still a little sketchy, but affordable). Had great BBQ and spicy chicken, which is a local specialty. Obviously let me know if you do go and I can try to hook you up.
Sweet… Will do! Thinking late-July… Up to Cougs….
@royce!: Lots of IPA on tap, one hopes…
@Steve: I hope, though IPAs are not as popular down there as they are in Southern California, and most of the local microbrews are less hoppy generally. I tried to sample as many local beers as I could, but I was also sampling local whiskeys, so I don’t remember much of it…went honky tonking, too, which added to my amnesia…
@royce!: We got both kinds of music. Country AND Western.
@Steve: Ha! They do! Actually, Nick Cave was playing downtown and we saw him in the alley outside of one of the honky tonks. Would’ve been a good show, but I didn’t know that he was playing
@royce!: I can only imagine what Nick Cave was doing in an alley.
@Steve: Looking spooky, for starters…
@royce!: When I first saw that you said you saw him in an alley, I thought you were talking about some pop-up hipster music venue….
@Steve: Ha! I wish. No, he was playing at the Ryman, which used to house the Grand Ole Opry, and shares an alley with some of the honky tonk bars downtown. I think he had just finished and was returning to his tour bus.

Hello Grey and Rudy! My first comment this season. As always, thanks for the good work on this site – just awesome!
some comments before my Q’s
1. people, no more bugging Grey with MOCK draft questions. he’s too nice not to answer but c’mon – its a fake draft (and its mid March). there are too many variables in mocks, with people trying out wacky strategies or too many autopicks or noobs or whatever. if you’re asking general questions about mocks ok, but to evaluate your team, use the war room tools or just read grey’s rankings and do some work yourself (i feel like Jack full of Hate with this rant but really people – enough)
2. Nick the podcast host: love the podcast; anyway, you seem to be too important to be posting questions in the comments and asking Grey to eval your team like the rest of us chumps- can’t you get more personal advice from the guys by private email?
now some questions:
Grey, i know you rank CC lower than others, but where should he rank if I’m trying to trade him?
briefly, i got stuck with him after price enforcing in an auction draft(at $18 ) my SP/RP are ok, but i need a more reliable 1B (i got LaRoche – CC messed my budget) and i’m thinking of moving CC for Encarnacion, AGon or Goldy, or even an extra OF/U like BJ. Good idea?
Hey, man, long time no see… 1. Ha… 2. Ha! I’d trade CC for the best guy I could get… I’d take any of those 1B with CC… Not BJ so much… I’d take the 1B in the order I’ve ranked them…
15 team mixed, 5×5 ESPN standard + 2 catchers, $260 budget
I have the following keepers:
$3 Jose Altuve
$1 Alex Gordon
$3 Chris Davis
$14 Giancarlo
$35 Matt Kemp
$18 Mike Trout
$1 Everth Cabrera
$5 Macro Scutaro
$8 Chris Sale
$1 Homer Bailey
$1 Edwin Jackson
I think I’m in a good spot to dominate this league. Interested in outside opinions.
Questions:
Keep Altuve or extend $5 for an additional year? Traditionally I always play for the current year even in a keeper league but would be nice to keep this group together.
Is it worth it to keep Scutaro or go with 9 keepers instead? He is under his inflated value but could I get a better player for $5 in an auction? Probably.
Given my current team I know I need to focus on pitching in the auction. However, should I spend more than normal on pitching since I have so many discounts on hitting? Or go even further overboard on hitting and try to flat out win every hitting category?
Extend Altuve for $5 more… Not worth Scutaro… Yeah, you can spend more on pitching since your team is stacked already… Nice keepers…

How did I do?
You have a solid team… Not sure how you got some of those players… Don’t love Markakis, but it’s a small issue…
@Grey: RCL draft, picking from #5 I got
1. Cano
2. Longoria
3. Jones
4. Greinke
5. Davis
6. Jennings
7. Latos
8. Trumbo

I picked up Reynolds as FA to slide Trumbo to OF and bench Markakis if need be.
Looks like there could be an average issue, Reynolds isn’t gonna help with that…
@Grey: I know, but Reynolds only play’s if Markakis is sucking and nothing better presents itself. Maybe Sparkakis will show up this year and stay healthy.
Yeah, it’s still early, plenty of time to replace players…
First off, I only just started reading Razzball last month after years of make-believe sports, and I’d have to say it’s the best fantasy content I’ve come across in my internet travels. It’s also really cool that you guys take the time to answer almost every question in the comments, so thanks for that.
Like Nick the Podcast Host, I have a question about a particular player’s ranking: Tommy Milone. His write-up in Grey’s SP rankings isn’t very enthusiastic, his projection doesn’t look very exciting, and yet he’s ranked a ways higher than Fister, Kuroda, rotation-mate Brett Anderson, and all the other good-ratio, low-K, snoozefest types. Why is that?
Thanks for the kind words! Even though he’s young, Milone offers excellent ratio help, which is hard to find, and he has upside due to his youth… He’s a poor man’s Zimmermann…
@Grey: Works for me! I have him on all my teams thanks to your rankings and the deep freeze most sites have him in.
@Eric B. sans Rakim: What happened to Rakim?
Who will get more holds…Strop or Uehara?
Strop…
Ended up punting 3B in the draft and landed (Todd Frazier, Kyle Seager and Youk). Worried about these guys producing! Is it way too early to panic and trade a guy like Strasburg for Longoria? Plan on waiting for the games to start to pull the trigger.
Yes, too early…. Be calm, Robert.
Going to help out a buddy in a 10-team Yahoo league, but he’s in one of those that counts errors, singles, doubles, triples, hits as well as losses, walks.
Regarding hitting, how does that change the way you approach the draft? I’ve never done one of these drafts.
It would push up speed and guys with solid WHIPs… I would ignore errors and losses…
You seem incomplete with out Rudy on the podcast. How can FPJ be without RLC?
I know… FPJ needs his Pygmalion!
@Grey: you got it, i shall never doubt you again, except for some of your projections…
@Jack Full of Hate: oops i should of said where is laney boggs to your taylor vaughn
I’m getting a shirt made, “I’m forever FPJ.”
@Grey: FPJ 4 LIFE it could stand for Fredo the Partial Jew…
And RLC 2.
@Grey: RLC – Really Lucky Cougar?
If RLC was Really Lucky Cougar then I’d be RL2.
@Grey: Rudy Loves the Casino bus – for getting all snuggly with berkman this year
Totally… He wants Kenny Lofton to come out of retirement…
@Grey: he glosses up when he hears Hells Bells. That could go for Royce too
royce! was the first to sign the petition of renaming all San Diego residents, Gwynn.
@Grey: Welcome to beautiful San Gwynn. Renamed streets like Templeton Ave, Winfield Way, and Caminetti Court
Don’t forget Alley Hoffman…

@Grey
Quick, who ya want? Anthony Rizzo or Carlos Gomez?
@BigFatHippo: rizzo
@Jack Full of Hate: In keeping with the Cubbie theme, is Fujikawa even close to being a Donkeycorn yet?
I’ve heard nothing on him this spring.
@BigFatHippo: Brain freeze handcuff, which is a good thing
Grey,
I realize this is late but your response would be much appreciated. I have the 2nd pick in my 5×5 10 team draft where saves+holds is a category. I created 3 different draft strategies based upon your rankings compared to Yahoo.
If I were to draft Miggy, my next two picks would be J-Up and Gonzo with Goldschmidt in the 4th or 5th (the guys in my draft aren’t so keen to his upside.
If I were to draft Braun, I would go for Beltre/Longoria and Gonzo
If I decided to pick Cano, I would go Beltre/Longo and J-Up/Jones
Which decision would the all-mighty G-man go for? I’m leaning toward Braun et al. I did a mock draft and got this
1. Ryan Braun (Mil – OF)
2. Evan Longoria (TB – 3B)
3. Adrian Gonzalez (LAD – 1B,OF)
4. Cliff Lee (Phi – SP)
5. Paul Goldschmidt (Ari – 1B)
6. Ben Zobrist (TB – 2B,SS,OF)
7. Max Scherzer (Det – SP)
8. Shin-Soo Choo (Cin – OF)
9. Victor Martinez (Det – C)
10. Mark Trumbo (LAA – 1B,3B,OF)
11. Jeff Samardzija (ChC – SP)
12. Jake Peavy (CWS – SP)
13. Hunter Pence (SF – OF)
14. Brett Gardner (NYY – OF)
15. Huston Street (SD – RP)
16. Ryan Vogelsong (SF – SP)
17. Josh Rutledge (Col – 2B,SS)
18. Casey Janssen (Tor – RP)
19. Josh Reddick (Oak – OF)
20. Brandon McCarthy (Ari – SP)
21. Erick Aybar (LAA – SS)
22. Jedd Gyorko (SD – 3B)
23. David Robertson (NYY – RP)
Keep doing what you do.
I’d go Braun and that team looks excellent… Be careful being low on power and high on speed with Gardner and Aybar…
@Grey: Thanks you taught me well… I was thinking of drafting Gardner and Bonifacio/Aybar and then trading one to someone for a power-hitter/closer.
Steals don’t get much on the trade market, but you can try…
@Grey: Alright, thanks for your advice. Great job with the site!
No problem…
does anybody know when Luebke gets DL status on Yahoo? Others, like Pineda and Carpenter are already on it. Also, does anybody have any useful info on whether or not Phelps is going to start for NYY? I want to pick up at least one of W.Peralta/Phelps/W.Davis/Worley. Peralta/Worley are the only ones mentioned in top 100, but that may have been without Phelps/Davis being known to be starters. Thanks for any help; UPDATE: Hammels is now out there as well. Could also pick up Burton to handcuff my Perkins. Got 2 spots at least.
Yahoo does these things when they feel like it, no rhyme or reason with when… I’d go with Hammel, Wily or Vance…

Vidal Sasoon, always… With a pitching staff that good, I’d usually look at your hitting and say that’s why it’s good, the hitting isn’t… But your hitting is also solid… Nice team!
Hey grey, after the whole calling google thing… The fuck were you talkin about??? Hahaha so confusing… But anywho, on the the PC!
Thats podcast… I know some of you guys are gettin old.
Ha… We like our podcasts segmented like grapefruit…
@Grey: the podcast is pro now a days! And thats a lot of RCL’ers! Snappppp

anyone with insider know the 8 names on keith laws breakout 2013 list?

Word.
@jaywrong: *ahem* BOOM-SHACKA-LACKA
@jaywrong: HAHAHAHAHAHAH thats a good one !…………………….
Overly detailed/complicated question here, but you guys can handle it. Background info:
NL-Only, Dynasty league (8 team), pts league.
Hitter pts = TB + R + RBI + BB + 2*SB
Pitcher Pts = IP + K + 10*W + 10*CG + 5*SHO + 8*SV
I have the second pick in our draft and am undecided between Bloje Jr Upton/Shin-Soo Choo/Kris Medlen. Basically… I need SP and OF, so my top two picks at going to be one of each. I’ve averaged the projections from Razzball (obviously)/ESPN/Fantrax(league site, not my choice)/ZiPs/Bill James/Steamer, so I’ll include their average pts total in ( ). My first two picks (based on who’s available) break down as follows:
1) Bloje Jr Upton (550) & Hyun-Jin Ryu (463)
2a) Kris Medlen (494) & Denard Span (424) {I’m afraid of C Crawford(445) in 2k13 & beyond}
2b) Shin-Soo Choo (518) & Hyun-Jin Ryu (463)
I have three questions:
A) Do you agree with the priority order above for 2013?
B) I would hope that my top two round picks are good enough to keep beyond 2013. Do you agree with the order beyond 2013 for an NL-only? (Choo is on a 1yr deal, everyone else is staying in the NL {contract-wise, anyway})
C) Who said anything about C?
Thanks in advance!!!
1) Nice on BJ’s name… Ha! A) Yup B) Yup C) Hehe
@Grey: thanks Grey wolf. Your confirmation will help me to stop teetering.
Randomly came up with the nickname Gyorkosaurus Rex for your boy (I’m sure Gyorko store has been played out by now)
Podcast is coming together nicely, btw. Podcast spring training is almost over though!! Get that slacker, Rudy, into midseason form or send him to the AA Podcast. Haha
Ha! I like that nickname…
Hey Grey,
Another great job on the site and the podcast.
Question-Do you know an easy way to update the war room spreadsheet with your latest projections?
I don’t want Headley in his original spot and I’d like to keep current. I have two drafts this weekend.
BTW, any thoughts on Mitch Moreland as a sleeper? Will he get enough PT for a mixed league?
Thanks!
Tom
Thanks! I don’t know the Excel spreadsheet, I’ll let the Excel guy know though that there’s a question for him… I don’t like Moreland… Not enough PT for most mixed leagues…

Cool, in a second…
Grey, thoughts on Matt Carpenter? I remember using him a couple of times last year when he was hot and I needed injury fillers. Allegedly he’s going to start at 2b for the cardinals. 46 RBIs/.296/.365 last year in 119 games. Were you factoring him in as a starter when you ranked him in the mid 300s?
I was factoring as a near-starter… He’s pretty bleh… Decent average, not great power…
Hi Grey,
I saw that you and Rudy took Bryce/Verlander from the 13th spot in a recent expert draft. Any reason for that or just wanting to change things up? Thanks!
@Professor Chaos: Rudy talks about it here, Prof:

Not to make excuses, but also, to make excuses, tonight our daughter decided that she was going to freak out and not eat dinner, and my brother in law couldn’t get online so I had to draft for him and try to help my wife feed and entertain a screaming one year old… I had so much hope for this team, but it’s all good, because at least I have Miggy…
@royce!: Given what you were dealing with (and I think I’m more familiar with it than Grey
), that team could be a LOT worse.
Might need to be first to the wire when a closer gets replaced though…
@Steve: WHY DIDN’T YOU WARN ME??!!!
@royce!: Worse than the screaming baby are the hate vibes being sent in your direction by one’s wife.
@Steve: Kidding, and of course I’ll be the first to the wire when a closer gets replaced, because I’m moving out into a bachelor pad first thing in the morning…
@Steve: Still kidding. Forgot to mention that I kept being bumped offline for some reason, which was, ironically, how I ended up with one of my closers (Holland).
@royce!: Weird – I did too. I just had the draft for the keeper you kindly drafted for me last year. Doubt it was Yahoo, as I was using a mobile broadband device to connect to the net (work LAN won’t let me launch the draft app. Think the connection just kept dropping.
All the carnage is here, if you’re interested…
http://razzball.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=26953&start=20
@Steve: Yeah, I think it’s my new modem. The service provider told me that it was much faster than the one I’ve had for the last 2-3 years, but I guess that’s what I get for getting my cable from something named “cox.”
@royce!: hehe…cox dicked you over
@Steve: And that team doesn’t look that bad…Trout brightens up any team/plate!
@Steve: @royce!: Are you punting Holds?
@Jack Full of Hate: I am, sort of. There are so many holds guys available on the wire that I figure I’ll just grab em as I go. For example, Bastardo is still on the wire. Also, holds are very fluid, so I’d rather just wait until the end of the first month or so to figure it out. I’ll probably drop one of my excess OF for Bastardo though.
@royce!: are there any speculative hand cuffs with promise
@Jack Full of Hate: That’s the problem with drafting for two teams at once- my brother in law’s team lacked closers so I grabbed some speculative guys (Rondon, Fujikawa) for him. I’m sure that if we combined our teams, we would kill it.
@royce!: Pestano?
Santos?
@royce!: Oh, and how I miss when they are 1. What a great time before they walk and talk. Enjoy it
@Jack Full of Hate: thanks. I hate to complain, bc it’s mostly a blast. And Pestano and Santos are gone
Team doesn’t look bad at all… Bench bats aren’t bad gambles, but I can’t see how they’re getting in there… Or at least 2 of the 3… Obviously Rizzo at first is a risk, but not terrible…
@Grey: Thanks for the reassurance. I have had decent luck in this league with the “chump dump,” so by the end I thought I’d gamble on some bats. By the end of April I will either drop or trade them. Rizzo’s a “Rudy gamble.”
Yeah, that’s how I felt in my draft today… Just took some end round gambles for s’s and g’s since I figured I’d drop them anyway…
I have a question about the (ultra-cool) razzdraft war room tool: Are those thresholds — 1057, 273, 1074, 180, .283 on the hitting side — true for NL-only as well. I’m having trouble hitting 100% on all 5×5 categories with just NL players and I’m wondering if that halved talent pool means for smaller stat expectations? Also, are those numbers what 1st place teams won with last year, or are they just to be competitive? Thanks for clarifying.
They are not, they’re for mixed teams… Numbers that are much higher… Close to 16 team here: http://razzball.com/fantasy-baseball-draft-goals-for-5×5-stat-categories/
Grey, great stuff as always. Just wanted to get your opinion on my approach. I have the 4th pick in a 12-team, 9×8 H2H league. With my first pick, I’m kind of leaning toward McCutchen…though, I’m also thinking about Cano but am having some doubts about him this year. If you had to choose between Cutch and Robbie, who would you take? Also, I think I know the answer to this, but if Braun happens to drop to me, would he be the one to choose over the other two?
Thanks in advance for your advice. I love the site – keep up the good work, man!
I’d take McCutchen… I’d take Braun if he fell… No problem, thanks!

Your war room rated gave my pitching a bad rating on Ks, Ws, and SVs as well as SBs. I thought I did really well in pitching actually, minus saves, but I plan on using the DL slots freed by Granderson and Beachy to use on some RPs.
Anything that you’d do to this team except maybe try to shore up MI?
You have bad Ks b/c you don’t have enough pitchers… Should have 6… You’ll be fine once you can DL Beachy and pick up another starter… I’d be more concerned about your steals, you do look low on those… I’d see what’s out there for MI, yeah.. Maybe trade Craig for someone… That’ll free up your UTIL spot too…
trying the name out. Sky said it speaks of optimism and makes him think of delicious food. I think it sounds like i eat too many cupcakes
Next it’s gonna be Jack Full of Nicknames…
@Grey: Jack Full of $&*T
my commish has extended keeper deadline so i am asking again to see if the latest news has changed your mind (you liked bruce more than wright 3 days ago)
nl-only 10-team (replacement bats are usually pretty brutal)
jay bruce at $25
or
david wright at $28
things to consider: wright is hurt with a somewhat difficult-to-judge injury; however every other NL 3B seems to be experiencing bad things
who should i keep?
@ferris: keep bruce, draft frazier
I like Bruce better…
14 Team Keeper 6×7 with OBP TB and L
Moustakas for Utley?
Moustakas/M. Carpenter/Harvey/5th pick Utley/Bauer/4th pick for?
My 3B is Longo, so Moose is expendable sort of. Haren/Lince/Harvey/Parker/Beachy my top 5 SPs. My 2Bs are Bonfeface and Carp. I’m leaning towards just holding off. Dude also has Altuve. What would “get it done” for you?
Hold off… It’s not good…
Grey, found out I have the 2nd pick in the 10 team draft tomorrow night. Just finished a mock and I went with Miggy after Trout went first. Assuming Trout goes first tomorrow night, there’s no need to consider Braun, right? If Miggy were to go first, Braun is pick and no need to consider Cutch, correct?
Somehow I stupidly drafted beltre in the 2nd round tonight, thus using the rare 3b-3b 1st 2 round strategy…hopefully I can avoid a similar brain fart tomorrow night. I used the player rater and hit all of the goals other than steals. With Bone-face going in the 230s ADP on yahoo, would he be a good bench piece to add late in a 10 teamer for speed? Also, noticed the goal for saves is over 100, I would think it would take 4 middle/bottom tier closers to hit that goal. Is 3 closers enough?
3 closers are enough… Bonifacio is fine late for steals and I’d follow my top ten for the first ten picks…
Grey – I’m in a 12 team H2H with 2 roster spaces – so pretty deep
What round do you recommend aiming for Brown (i know ST stats, but he is on fire and has post-hype sleeper status)
I was thinking him or Eaton around round 19
Also, Torii Hunter is hitting in the 2 hole for Detroit. Looks like a hell of a lineup spot. 15th rounder?
@Hats for Bats: Of my two drafts
Eaton: 13th, 16th
Brown: 21st, 20th
hope this helps
Hunter might not hit 15 homers or stay healthy… He’s fine, nothing great… 19th round sounds about right for those other upside picks…
Well – I enjoyed our draft in the RCL Champions League and think we’ll make some noise. To be fair, I had to enlist a partner to handle the actual draft, as I was locked in a dynasty auction all day. I had both drafts open simultaneously and was corresponding with my partner Nick by phone – LOL! So this team is a nice blend of both our styles and sleepers (and busts I am sure).
As for the Experts League tonight, I ended up on the wheel and never felt like I got a great feel for the room all night, nor did I feel like I worked the wheel picks to perfection very often. It was a very tough draft. Everyone brought their A game. I think having played last year, I have an understanding of what it takes to win, and I think some of the first timers will be surprised by the amount of player movement (especially from Grey and Rudy).
For those interested here is a recap of my RCL Champions draft posted on the Mastersball Forums: http://tinyurl.com/chalvtf
