The question we didn’t ask, “Mr. Proops, take one letter out of your last name and you’ve got street cred — drop a different letter and you have absolutely no cred.  Discuss.”  But we did ask him about comedy and Whose Line Is It Anyway… We basically clarified what everyone already knows –> talking about comedy is the least funny thing in the entire world, but… Greg Proops’s The Smartest Man in the World podcast is funny and should be checked out/downloaded/whatever the kids are saying nowadays.  You know, the 411!  And 411 is something I’m not even sure kids would understand.  As for our podcast with Greg Proops, it’s hoot-larious (I just made that up?  You like it?  Use it, but pay me a nickel every time).  Anyway, here’s the Razzball podcast, Proops we did it again:

  1. Great! I used to always watch the British Whose Line on Comedy Central. I didn’t realize he had a podcast; now I do. Huzzah.

  4. Hi Grey — This is an abridged version of a followup from the previous post:

Please pick two for possible saves going forward between: Sean Marshall, Burnett, Choat, David Hernandez, Ryan Cook, Benoit, and Marmol.

P.S. Luke Scott just hit a homer off a lefty! Only his second off a LHP all year.

Yes, Dayan Viciedo is on fire right now, but do you realize how on fire he really is? Over his past 60 AB’s (16 Games), here are his numbers:

    27 Hits (.450 AVG)
    14 Runs
    8 HR’s
    23 RBI
    4 K’s

That’s right, only 4 K’s. He’s still not walking much at all, but his recent drop in K’s indicate something has clicked in his approach. He’s either not chasing the same stuff he was earlier this season, or he’s just smashing everything near the zone. Any White Sox fans out there could feel free to chime in if you’ve been able to see the games live and could comment on any clear change he’s made in his approach, stance etc.

@Drexel Hill Dragons, Yeah, pretty insane… Wish I had him… I do think the bottom will drop out at some point, worth only until then though…

      • Moscowitz says:
        (link)

@Grey, well, with all due respect grey, this “the bottom will drop out” is a little bit of cliche, isnt it? I mean the bottom of everybody will drop some day at some point otherwise they all would hit .1000. He is not gonna hit 300, sure, but this guy has a lot of potential and is hitting the cover of the ball for an extended period of time now. Its not been 2, 3, 4 games, he is hitting constantly well. I think the guy is better than alot of people think he could be. I think he will be good for .270 over the curse of a season combined with a whole lot of power. something might have been clicking here.

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

@Moscowitz, I guess I meant the bottom will drop out more abruptly for him than other players… I don’t think he’ll hit anywhere near .270… He has 4 walks in 47 games… Pitchers throw him only balls in the dirt and off the plate, it’s gonna be hard to hit over .250…

          • Moscowitz says:
            (link)

@Grey, dont you think he will figure that out at some point? I dont think he will chase everything thrown at him at this rate. I mean he is young, there is a relevant chance to figure things out and corrent some other things. All i am saying is, i have seen alot worse guys having a better reputation than Viciedo. The sample size is actually not even all that small, pitchers could have started to throw him junk pitches long ago, they really are trying to get him out but he just keeps hitting them. I think this guy is just hitting a lot better now and who knows, maybe he even starts to be more selective about the pitches he intents to hit and draws more walks. However you could have a point about .250. If he doesnt start improving his plate disciplin the way i think he is capable of, then you could end up being closer to reality than me.

            • Grey

              Grey says:
              (link)

@Moscowitz, Vlad and Soriano (amongst others) had success never taking a pitch, but it’s riskier for players like that to maintain an average… If they don’t make contact, they’re not walking and they fall into a huge slump…

              • Moscowitz says:
                (link)

@Grey, True, i got your point and your point is valid but my point is, he has a chance to figure things out and start being more selective. Right now, he is hitting exceptionally well, but he could start changing his approach once his contact rate decreases. All i am saying is there is a chance he simply starts improving.

                • Grey

                  Grey says:
                  (link)

                  @Moscowitz, Yeah, I hear ya… Anything’s possible, I’d just like a bigger sample size before saying he’s improved…

                    (link)

@Grey, so what’s your ideal sample size, 100 AB’s? 200? I don’t think he will keep it up either, but that’s an insane drop-off your talking about

                    • Grey

                      Grey says:
                      (link)

@James, It’s not insane, two cold weeks this early in the season and he’s hitting .250. A full season would be a good sample size…

@VinWins, oh no it was very obvious.. he was tryna hit him! Guy threw behind him!! First pitch he got tossed.. hawk was pissed cuz the rays hit AJ and anothrr guy.. it was a quick ejection but mlb is tightin up on that shizz now a days

        • VinWins

          VinWins says:
          (link)

@Prezii, Right. There should have at least been a warning when they hit AJ. That was obvious retaliation for him spiking Zobrist yesterday.

          • Prezii says:
            (link)

@VinWins, i think it was beckham he hit with a breaking ball today but it looked as if it just got away from him, no intent. I agree tho, there should have been a warning after AJP got plunked.. maybe he forgot to warn quintana the first time and thought he did, so he just insta-tossed him? I dont know but it was a little wierd that the ump warned both benches AFTER the fact that tana got ejected.

Back to the lecture at hand…

    1) Re: No Joey Bats deal if I already have Longo. I’m not sure I completely follow. IF I could deal Edwin/Sale for Joey, Joey would take over at third for now, and then knock Morneau or Frenchy out of one of my UTIL slots when Longo comes back. Is that not good value? Would that not make sense, if I would have Edwin at UTIL once Longo comes back, Joey is an upgrade, no? I could then pick up Wandy, Vogelsong, Samardzija, Vargas, Bauer, Rios, Hardy, Hart, etc.

    2) I have a significant man-crush on Kipnis. I have a deep disgust for Phillips, even though he has slightly removed his head from his ass. Am also considering selling the Peav while I still can. Would you deal Peavy and Phillips for the Kipper and Morrow?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

@Wilsonian, You’d be clogging up a UTIL spot, so never be able to pick up any hot hitters… I’d take Kipnis and a better/different pitcher…

      • Wilsonian says:
        (link)

@Grey, 1) Ok, I’m smellin’ what you’re steppin’ in. Would it change your thought process if I told you I had two UTIL spots to work with?

        2) I don’t know if he’d go for more. He has Greinke and F-Her, but I doubt he’d do either one. Maybe I’ll give it the good ole college try.

@AL KOHOLIC, I own him, its not pretty but he gets me saves. The bad part is, i need Frieri to strike out the side every time he steps on the mound to keep my ratios up and compensate for Broxtons ugly saves lool. The strikeout abilities have obviously disapeared but he barely blows a save. Whats up with Holland though? he actually is by far the most talented arm in that bullpen.

I’m well over the innings limit in my league and need to drop a SP for a closer.

    I proposed Samardzija for Frieri.

He countered his Frieri and Dickey for my Gio.

I’d want a proven closer for Gio, so I could counter for his Kimbrel or Nathan. I’d also rather keep Gio and counter with my Bumgarner, J. Zimm or Latos.

    So… Latos for Kimbrel?

If memory serves as to your RCL team, Grey, I think they’ve heated up since I last popped in and offered you some good mojo.

Proops is a friend of a friend of mine. I think he’s either a Giants season ticket holder or he mooches Will Durst’s tickets all the time. Funny guy.

A’s are horrible. I did get off a good one on Saturday. Early in the game Jeter had a two out hit to drive in a run. One of his typical right field jam shots. So many Yankees fans there, a startling percentage in Jeter jerseys. So the crowd goes crazy loud. As they are introducing Granderson and the noise dies down a little, as loud as I can yell I go “GOD I HATE YOU JETER.” Excellent laugh. Then this woman in front of me turns around and goes, “you need to set a good example for those kids of yours.” I had my kids there obviously…and I said “Ma’am I believe I just did.”

    Hello Grey,
I would like your opinion on this trade offer in our 12 Team H2H League with Holds and OPS (I am currently hanging onto 4th Place):

I give up Felix Hernandez and Josh Reddick (the Savior of my offense)
I get Robinson Cano (I have Espinosa starting and Kendrick on the bench) and Paulino (meh!)

Should I get a better SP back such as Matt Moore or James MacDonald? Is that asking too much?

After the trade, my staff would be D. Hudson, Zimmerman, Strasburg, Sanchez, Lynn, Doubront and Capuano.

    Thanks as always Grey.

Are you worried about Alex Gordon? His k% is the same, improved bb%, improved ld%, babip is a little low (.284), and flyballs a little down. Biggest thing that sticks out is an incredibly high infield flyball rate which should really improve.

If I already have cargo, grandy, trout, reddick, and Jennings and Gardner due back in a week. So 7 players for 4 spots. Thinking of trading Reddick for a SP and possibly dropping Gordon.

Aroldis Chapman’s hotel room in downtown Pittsburgh was robbed late Tuesday night.
Chapman was not present for the robbery, but a 26-year-old woman was found tied up and crying in the ransacked room. It’s another mysterious and frightening incident in what has become a serious of mysterious and frightening incidents involving Chapman. He was arrested in Grove City, Ohio — about two hours north of Cincinnati — last Monday for driving 93 mph on a suspended licence. And the left-hander was also sued recently for $18 million by an imprisoned man in Cuba.

Choo, Hart, Rios, Quentin, Hardy, Davis, D. Gordon, Cespedes, Goldy, Aramis?

    2. Is Sale for Chapman fair?

    3. Should I really be rethinking my offer of Edwin/Sale for Bautista? Edwin keeps hitting and Joey doesn’t.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

@Wilsonian, 1. Quentin over Morneau… 2. Yes 3. Bautista’s shown the ability to hit 15 homers in a month, Edwin’s in uncharted territory.

      • Wilsonian says:
        (link)

@Grey, Thanks. Regarding the Joey deal: I want Joey, but it almost seems like I’m offering too much with Sale, too.

  107. Steve says:
    (link)

I don’t want to brag (actually, that’s exactly what I’m doing), but it’s been a day to remember in the 9-team keeper:

    17/37
    13 R
    5 HR
    16 RBI
    1 SB
    11 Ks
    .459 AVG
    .535 OBP

You can throw Morrow and Aceves in there, too…

@Grey, Yeah, but 2 HR and 6 RBI is better than 1 and 2… I think… I’m still celebrating Cinco de Mayo here. What? The wife bought a LOT of Corona… don’t judge me!

  109. Ralph Macchio says:

If I were to trade Rizzo for pitching help in a keeper league where he can basically be kept forever, what level of pitcher should I expect to be able get back?

    • Grey

      (link)

      @Ralph Macchio, A #2… No lower than Latos…

    • Wilsonian says:
      (link)

@Ralph Macchio, I just dealt him for Chapman. Wouldn’t go any lower than that. Same keeper scenario.

  110. Wilsonian says:

      • Wilsonian says:
        (link)

@Grey, shit, just saw it. So Kemp, Tulo, and Doc in 2 days. Looks good for my squad. Jesus.

    • Ronkonkoma says:
      (link)

      @peter, NOOOOOOOOOO!

      • Ronkonkoma says:
        (link)

@Ronkonkoma, he “walked into the dugout, snapped a bat over his knee, and disappeared into the clubhouse.”

  112. Wilsonian says:
    (link)

Looks like Tulo left the game with a leg injury. They’re now talking about him hitting the DL. Exactly what I needed after losing Doc already this week and nowhere to put either one.

    • Wilsonian says:
      (link)

      @Wilsonian, who’s the pickup:

      Desmond
      Hardy
      Seager
      Lowrie
      D.Gordon
      Cozart?

@I’m Keith Hernandez, I’ll take a stab… If pos eligibility isn’t relevant, Morneau, Middlebrooks, Quentin. Quentin is hot right now, so if it’s a short term pickup, I could see putting him on top.

  124. Holmes says:

Grey, as usual, love the blog.

Whats the deal with Howie Kendrick, is he more of a second half kind of player. Should I bench him and play the 2b carousel? I could drop Matt Adams at this point, but don’t have a lot of options there after. I have really just been using Adams at my Util since I have Mr. roVotto on that.

Right now options at 2b are: Infante, Ackley, Espinosa, Barney, and Everth Cabrera.

    Thoughts? Please advise. Thanks.
