Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

There just wasn’t enough time in the preseason for me to show you my RCL team, so I’m putting it in the podcast post.  Now, prepare yourself for the most confusing lede paragraph ever.  For the podcast, Rudy and I went over some preseason picks for Most Valuable Fantasy Hitter, Pitcher, Rookie of the Year, Fantasy Bust and the player who looks primed to breakout that won’t actually breakout.  Finally, Larry Schechter joined Nick to talk about some of his do’s and don’ts to win fantasy leagues.  Now, for the RCL league, Rudy and I decided to do something different do this year and have half of our league made up of writers from our site and the other half from friends of other sites.  Let’s call it a Family & Friends league; that doesn’t sound derivative of anyone else’s expert fantasy league. (I was gonna call it Friends & Family, but that DID sound derivative.)   The Razzball writers joining me were:  Rudy, Jay(Wrong), Sky, Tehol, Prospect Scott, Nick the Podcast Host and Scooby.  Okay, I made up the Scooby name, but it didn’t sound that out of place, did it?  The ‘perts from other sites participating were:  Dalton Del Don from Yahoo, Brad Johnson from Fangraphs, Ryan Carey of Mastersball, Paul Singman of Baseball Prospectus and Tim McLeod of RotoRob.  The draft went off without a hitch until I opened the draft window and saw Rudy had the first pick.  *shakes fist*  Ruuuuuudy!!!  Anyway, here’s the Razzball Podcast (now with my RCL team recap):

C: Wilson Ramos (21)
1B: Albert Pujols (2)
2B: Ian Kinsler (5)
3B: Ryan Zimmerman (4)
SS: Elvis Andrus (9)
MI: Alcides Escobar (20)
CI: Will Middlebrooks (14)
OF: Adam Jones (1)
OF: Jay Bruce (3)
OF: Alex Gordon (6)
OF: Norichika Aoki (13)
OF: Michael Brantley (17)
UTIL: Corey Hart (22)

P: Gerrit Cole (7)
P: Julio Teheran (8)
P: Andrew Cashner (10)
P: Ernesto Frieri (11)
P: Rafael Soriano (12)
P: Jose Veras (15)
P: Yordano Ventura (16)
P: Alex Wood (18)
P: J.J. Hoover (19)
Bench: Randall Delgado (23)
Bench: Josh Fields (24)
Bench: C.J. Wilson (25)

I LIKE THE TEAM, BUT I CAN’T RECONCILE SOMETHING….HOW DID YOU DRAFT COLE BEFORE TEHERAN WHEN THEY’RE REVERSED IN YOUR RANKINGS?!

Gerrit Cole is much higher in ESPN rankings and I don’t own Cole anywhere else, so I decided to reach for Cole over Teheran, figuring Teheran or Cobb would be there for the next round, and it worked out just as I planned….Muahahahahahaha.  That was an evil laugh, in case, ya know, didn’t know.  Same goes for Cashner.  I like Cashner and didn’t own him anywhere, so I figured dubya tee eff, let’s get Rowdy Roddy on this draft and smash a coconut over my pitching staff.  In the end, I still took guys I like, except C.J. Wilson, but that was just my last round pick because I know he gets the Mariners and Astros in his first two starts.  Stream-o-Nator!

DO YOU OWN ALEX WOOD EVERYWHERE OR AM I SEEING DOUBLE?

Nope, you’re not seeing double and if all of my fantasy teams mean anything, I expect the Braves to win the division with only two pitchers.  I have Wood and Teheran literally everywhere.  Didn’t exactly set out to do this, but Wood is always sitting there late and Teheran is invariably going later than I have him ranked.  You know what I’m really looking forward to?  Braves road trips to Metco and Crayola Canyon.  Bring on those pesky Marlins!

YOUR HITTING IS GOOD AND ALL BUT WHY DOES IT MAKE ME YAWN?

I feel ya on that.  I like Pujols a lot as a bounce back and Kinsler and Ryan Zimmerman and Adam Jones and Jay Bruce…BUT WHERE’S PUIG?!  That’s what my team is missing, upside.  I have nothing but downside.  Not sure if I have one hitter that we haven’t seen the best of, besides Middlebrooks, and he’s batting ninth.  Aoki is solid, I like him, he’s good on this team, but what’s his upside?  12 HRs, 25 SBs?  Okay.  Brantley is one of my BFFs, but where’s Brad Miller?  I want Brad Miller now, please.  I think I’m gonna go drop Corey Hart for Cody Asche right now just to feel alive.

      I don’t like Weaver either

  2. Wilsonian says:

Back to your previous post…would you drop Avisail (one of my three bench bats between him, Arenado, and Villar) for Hunter using a waiver claim – I’m 5th? I have Soriano, Veras, Lindstrom, Rodney as closers now and we can play up to 6 RPs.

Hawkins and Qualls are also available, so I could pick up one of those guys if I miss out.

    H2H – H, R, HR, RBI, SB, AVG, OB+SLUG, W, QS, SV, KS, KS/9, ERA, WHIP

      Yeah, I’d go for Hunter

      • Wilsonian says:
        (link)

@Grey: thanks, made the claim. Would you be worried not having an backup OF when we play 4? My other four are Jones, Marte, Trumbo, Brantley.

        • Wilsonian says:
          (link)

@Wilsonian: FYI, Revere, Crawford, BJUpton, Yelich, Reddick, Venable, Bourjos, Carter, and others, are available.

            Grey says:

            • Wilsonian says:
              (link)

@Grey: and not worry about the available OFs right now? The only other drop I would have is Villar who’s on the bench/short day fill-in.

Hi Grey, looking at your rankinngs, you have Bourjos at 127 and Brantley 165, yet you project better numbers for Brantley. Who do I pick up?

OK, so somehow I ended up with 4 Oakland A’s on my team… Donaldson, Cespedes, Crisp, and platooner Moss. I can’t decide if this is bad news or not having 4 guys from the same MLB team on my team. What do you think? Try and move one or two of them for a player of equal value?

@y4: Hey Y4, I am not huge on going that cheap on pitchers, especially a Colorado one even if it’s Miami (which started hot yesterday). Also don’t think it would be good to start Eric Chavez at 3B, personally, and overall would rather take MIL players over ATL players. And if you wanna follow along with us this year, we’re covering Draftkings content Mon-Sun:

It seems like everyone asking you Ramos questions are in shallower leagues than mine, so let me ask you another one among these 3 for my 14 team OPS league:

I’d wait to hear more news

  9. Shake N Bacon says:
    (link)

So I learned this weekend that our RCL leagues have no max number of games played for the offensive positions. So basically you can try and win all of the counting stats by plugging in people everyday. Is having a revolving hitter everyday a little crazy? For example, plugging in Mayberry Jr. today against Perez in Texas, then dropping him tomorrow for player X who has a good matchup against pitcher Y. I feel like this may be unsustainable the entire season…without some PEDs on my side.

      • Shake N Bacon says:
        (link)

@Grey: Believe it or not I read that…well skimmed/read that. I’m like one of those speed readers zooming my finger across the page (computer screen) showing off how fast I can read.

I heavily believe in maximizing AB’s. Just never thought about doing it in a league where there is no maximum Games started limit. I thought I made a lot of moves before…now the sky is the limit!

      • Tehol Beddict says:
        (link)

@Rudy Gamble: INCREDIBLY EXHAUSTING! especially when you have to do it for 6 leagues. #NotCool

      • Shake N Bacon says:
        (link)

@Rudy Gamble: Yeah the exhausting part is what I’m a little concerned with. I have two RCL leagues that I can do this on, so I’ll give it my best shot.

        • Tehol Beddict says:
          (link)

@Shake N Bacon: its not worth the stress in a free league. I’m going to burn out on this. Worth it if you playing in big money leagues

          • Shake N Bacon says:
            (link)

@Rudy Gamble: @Tehol Beddict: Yeah one of the RCL leagues I’m in is a money league with Beastman. So I’ll be trying it in that one.

Too bad ESPN fantasy pages is blocked here at work. I need to get the new Samsung Note that is bigger than James Van Der Beek’s forehead, so I can efficiently make moves in my RCL leagues.

            Thanks for the advice guys!

        • i recommend limiting it to when you have a hole in the roster. i’m doing it right now b/c of all the off days in the first week.

    • Cram It says:
      (link)

@Shake N Bacon: I just posted about this in my RCL. Seems like in these leagues, managers love playing that game, and they’re frantic about it already. But there are only 3 bench spots and I like my squad, so I can’t justify dropping somebody after 1 day just to get 4 AB’s. I guess other teams are thin at the bottom of their roster so they effectively have a couple of open spots for this type of strategy.

      • Shake N Bacon says:
        (link)

@Cram It: Yeah, i’m a little torn between dropping someone I like but won’t be starting (barring injuries) vs. trying to play matchups. I don’t see myself going crazy with it all season. Maybe a few days on, few days off.

  10. Slim says:

“I think I’m gonna go drop Corey Hart for Cody Asche right now just to feel alive.”

Are you feeling OK Grey? I figured you would have Asche on every team if he was available for you. Even if for no other reason than to stare at him while he’s on your bench and smile while slowly petting a cat and sipping a glass of Courvoisier by the fireplace. Did Asche write you an email asking for advice and spell your name wrong (Gray) and this is your revenge?

I am in a 14 team league and drafted Jones as one of my closers. My other two are Balfour and Brothers. We have a $1000 FA budget. How much would you bid on Lindstrom, K-Rod and Valverde? Thanks

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      $150-ish Lindstrom, $80-ish for Valverde, K-Rod…

      • JDW says:
        (link)

@Grey: I give myself one question a year to ask you and it has already been asked and answered. I don’t want to be that guy incessantly asking FB questions.

However, I WILL exploit others doing just that. :) Interested to see you’d pay more for Lindstrom than K-Rod. I was really up in the air between the two. Nice to see an informed opinion from a writer I trust.

    • Gene Parmesan says:
      (link)

      @Jimbo:

How much you put in is dependent on your league and how much free agent closers typically go for. I’d rank the current three closer fill-ins in the following order: Valverde, K-Rod and then Lindstrom. I’d keep Jones around if you have the roster flexibility as I don’t Ventura can’t be that stupid.

    This is my staff

Should I do it? Thinking about waiting and seeing what Lincecum does. I won’t be punting saves but I’ll be down to one closer in Hunter.

Nice job with your draft, but I don’t know…I mean everything you wrote before that was lost in a grey fog when I saw that team. I don’t understand how you were able to draft such a good overall roster given your competition. (I know that sounds like a compliment, but it’s the green monster.) In my RCL, after round 3 I was all on my own and was sniped early and often. I’ll look for the complete draft listing, which I assume will show up later maybe in a Rudy post. But that looks like a winner. Good Luck!

        @Grey:

For the last two years we’ve had 70 degree winters with no snow in the mountains and then real wet spring. It’s actually pretty welcome except messing with ball. Cobb settling in. If you’re watching this game, have you noticed how uncanny the Rays ability to place their defense is. Bautista hit a bullet down the line and Longoria was freaking standing right there. And then when they’re not standing right there, they have great range, like on the play Zobrist made. That’s the reason you like Rays pitching.

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

        • BKK says:
          (link)

@OaktownSteve: no kidding, you see the play Longoria made in the 9th going to his right diving snags the ball behind the bag on the line and throws the runner out at first from his knees.

For what it’s worth, Jonathan Diaz, filing in for Reyes, drew a walk and then took off on a steal attempt. Ball got put in play but it appears the kid will want to run. AL only or very deep league. Doesn’t look like he’ll be useful elsewhere.

Hey grey, I know all leagues are different but for pitching categories would you have it as -2 points or less around -1 or -.5 point for earned runs?

Right now this is how it’s set up

Outs recorded : 1 point (3 points per inning)

    Strike outs: 1 point

    Wins: 5 points

    Loses: -5 points

    Earned runs: -2 points

    Walks issued: -1 points

    Saves: 5 points

    It’s h2h with ESPN , 12 tm.

@goodfold2: That’s because Hanigan kept setting up outside off the plate. Cobb kept hitting it but it was a ball.

Also on Diaz, the talk on TO radio this morning is he is a defense first SS and not know for his stick, he had a good night though. The media was upset that they called him up and not Kawasaki.

Saw the discussion with Oaktown earlier about the rain out of the A’s Indians game. Turns out this is the first rainout in Oakland since 1998. That’s pretty crazy. I lived in the bay area for a year and the weather is great most of the time, but thats still hard to believe. I’m surprised the grounds crew even knows how to put a tarp on the field.

    Grey,

Slim pickens’ on the waiver wire to replace Ramos in my 2 catcher league.

Do you like Avila or Arencibia more as a short (potentially long) term replacement? League is H2h, standard + OPS.

Sometimes you just have to crap your pants, dive in, and swim.

    Thanks.

    • Grey

      Avila

Oh, sorry, just saw OPS… I’d go JP for short term there

Wow, smoaking hot…..worth a grab over Scheppers instead of M Perez (who I have a claim in for)?

    • Nightpandas says:

@Nightpandas: 15 team league, 8th starter vs only bench bat

Hoes first and now Ibanez, two guys I almost picked up for batty calls…..what would I call this?

    • BKK says:
      (link)

@J-FOH: I’d call it missed opportunity. If “ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we’d all have a Merry Christmas.”

      • J-FOH says:
        (link)

@BKK: too bad Cinco De Mayo is our next real holiday

        • BKK says:

@J-FOH: I think Easter might be before Cinco de Mayo. Who can skip a holiday filled with chocolate!

  85. SteveNZ says:

This Pollock batty call is working out. Might have to keep him around with Victorino hurt…

    • J-FOH says:
      (link)

@SteveNZ: looked at him and Parra too, it’s raining over here like it’s Oakland. I like how Gibson is interchanging them in the line up.

I’m starting to regret dropping Erasmo this afternoon for Porcello. I get his stats for tonight, but I’m hoping nobody claims his so I can pick him back up when he comes off waivers.

Would you drop Porcello, Smyly, or Hoover to get him back? The issue with dropping Hoover is that I have no actual closers right now—Brothers, Hoover, Melancon—hoping that they eventually get the role.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Porcello, you should lay off the waiver wire drops

      • Red Barons says:
        (link)

@Grey: Porcello was just sitting there as a FA. Descent pitcher with a great offense, and I figured Erasmo was more of a streamer in a 12 team league.

  94. Wake Up says:

So, what did I miss today?

    B Miller!

    Heyward!

    Smoak still looking good…

    Batty calls
    Joyce
    Parra
    4/6 2 Runs and a ribeye…

and Ramos breaks a bone in his wrist that apparently you don’t even need…I’m going with…he got kidnapped again…Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson most likely…ah, yes the old friendship and Balfour and loyalty…if you can’t scream Balfourenly at your friends…then you should not expect loyalty from your unnecessary bones…Pisiform Ramos…pure Pisiform!

    • Grey

      HA!

  95. Sad Keanu says:

  96. Paz says:

guys I got offered Braun Fielder and Sandoval in exchange for Goldschmidt Segura and Myers

it’s a keeper league but only two players are kept

no brainer I should accept right??

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      I don’t love it

    • Red Barons says:
      (link)

@Paz: I like the younger side, but like you said, it’s only keep 2.

    • BKK says:
      (link)

@Paz: You are being offered guys who are good (nothing wrong with them) but their best years are likely behind them. You would be giving up 3 guys who’s best years are likely still ahead of them. Goldy side by a long shot for me.

    • Paz says:
      (link)

@Paz: thanks for the feedback. the upside is strong with the Goldy side, and that’s the main hangup for me. but like I said I can only keep two…ah well I’ll figure it out you guys keep rockin’

  97. BKK says:

Albert looked pretty good legging out that double!

  98. Zar says:
    (link)

    Heya Grey,

Dozier was just dropped in my RCL, lots of people seem high on him. I’m currently running Schoop out as my 2b cause I Profar to. Is there a reason you’re not as high on dozier? He’s 23rd in your 2b rankings vs schoop’s cancelled 18.

I’m guessing hold with what I have and don’t grab him.

  99. ThE sHiT says:
    (link)

I am not waiting on Ramos. Who out of these guys do i pick up as his replacement: AJ Ellis, Suzuki, Zunino, Salty, Jaso, Lobaton, Avila, Arencibia, Ruiz, or d’Arnaud?
