Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

In September, Nick Markakis hit a wall like Super Dave Osbourne.  For the month, he’s currently ranked behind Grady Sizemore (who hasn’t played since September 3rd), Cory Sullivan and Justin Maxwell for value amongst outfielders.  If those names don’t sound familiar to you, they shouldn’t.  They suck.  Hold up, Albright.  You’re telling people to grab Edwin Encarnacion and drop Markakis? Yes, it’s a weird time of the year.  But if you hold onto guys for name value, you’re going to lose, especially in H2H leagues.  The flame has gone out on Sparkakis and it’s time to move on in one year leagues.  Anyway, here’s some more players to buy or sell this week in fantasy baseball:

BUY

Edwin Encarnacion – Need a guy that won’t run out a pop up?  Looking to fill your team with lollygaggers?  No need to look further!  For a limited time only, Encarnacion is batting third and hitting .400 over the last week.

Matt Thornton/Octavio Dotel/Scott Linebrink – Octatt Thornbrink, or some combination there within will get Sox saves.

Hank Blalock – Scroll down to morning post.  Go ahead, move your mouse.

Martin Prado – Ah… What to say?  Seriously, what?  He’s been hot recently (over .500 in the last week).  You need more?

Jody Gerut – Batting .500 over the last week with 3 homers.  His name doesn’t seem so girly now does it?  Okay, but not as girly as Suzy.

Every Padres Pitcher – They’re home for the final week.  Stock up!

Brian Duensing – Next week, he gets the Tigers and probably (teams’ final pitching schedules are iffy) the Royals.  He has an under 1 ERA vs. the Tigers in two games and the Royals’ bats have chlamydia.

Wade Davis – Gets the Orioles and the Yankees in the final game of the season.  He doesn’t come without risk, but crossing the street comes with risk, especially in New Delhi.

Rafael Furcal - About time.

Ronnie Belliard – Hitting for average, light power and speed and playing over Orlando Hudson.  Actually, Freddy Sanchez and Orlando Hudson should just start their own team.  The Dirty Hudsons.  They can play in Weehawken overlooking the grand Hudson River.  Instead of The Splash Zone, they can have The Rash Zone.

SELL

Ian Kinsler – Yay, he played more than 120 games.  Not well, unfortunately.  In September, he ran out of gas like OPEC in 2078. (Figures courtesy of Al Gore.)

David Wright – You’d think I didn’t like the Mets the way I’m pushing people to lose Beltran and Wright.  Not true.  Just this year.  Now to go along with Wright’s warning track power, he’s saying he’s scared coming to the plate because of Post-Plunking on the Head Syndrome.  Hopefully, he can get over this by next year, but for the final week I’d look elsewhere if there’s other options.

Chipper Jones – Seriously, drop him.

Any Pitcher That Has Pitched Their Last Game – Even if you’re simply putting in a middle reliever.  It’s do or die time, fellas (and two girl readers).  I’d wish you good luck, but luck’s for beginners and the leprechauns, use your skills!

Got some really terrible options for SS next week- Jhonny Peralta, Desmond, Bloomquist, Tolbert, Sutton, Janish, and Anderson Hernandez. Who should I start?

  2. royce! says:
    (link)

Also, drop Markakis for Gerut or Patterson?

    @ Grey :
lot’s of funny stuff (and good advice , here) , but must leave soon ,
and only have time for this :

    ok , maybe i’m freaking …. and maybe it’s cbs .
but re: nolasco vs mets :
    i’m seeing a loss on 4-8 … 5 IP 7H 4R 2BB 2K’s
    and a win on 9-9 ………….6.1 IP 4H 3R 2BB 4K’s

    cbs shows a total line of 16.1 . 17H 11R..7 .. 11 K’s
    so , i’m either missing a no-decision start of 5 IP 6H 4R 3BB 5K’s
or , cbs’ stats aren’t as reliable as i have thought .

    either way , i’m believing you .
    nolasco stays .

    thanks , again

  4. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@royce!: I’d go for Gerut and Bloomquist.

  5. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @big o: Cool, no problem.

  6. Neil says:
    (link)

Now that Ells has two seasons of .~290 and 50+ steals, where will he be ranked for 2010? His 2009 stats add up to early 2nd round value, but will people say “I can get Figgins, Morgan, Rajai, Bourn or Fowler in round 6 or later, so there’s no way I’ll take Ellz before round 4.” I took Ells in round 6 of a 12 team league this year.

And is there any real difference between Figgins, Ells, Nyjer and Bourn (other than track record and age)? They are all going to hit .280+ with no power and 40+ steals.

  7. Steve says:
    (link)

@Grey: Is Linebrink the least likely of that trio to get the call, or is he worth a grab just in case?

  8. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@Neil: Figgins has weird eligibility, Bourn’s very flaky on average, Davis and Nyjer are no guarantee… Ellsbury probably will be a 3rd rounder.

@Steve: He is the least likely, probably. I’m not hedging to hedge, just hard to say with Ozzie. Worth a grab if you really need saves.

  9. Turnip says:
    (link)

Meek God of Roto! Could this be yet another jock sniffing cheap shot at the Talented Mr. Roto? Bet we’ll see the acroynm MGR appearing in every post from here on out. For 10 bucks I’ll sell you the twitter name TheRealMGR that I just scooped up.

  10. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@Turnip: I like that nickname for him. Could work.

  11. GTS says:
    (link)

Maybe you should have added Corey Hart to this list of droppables?

  12. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @GTS: Yeah, Hart’s droppable.

  13. Big Mike says:
    (link)

Love the blog, doode. Lookin’ to implement your dump any picther who has started his last game … but how to identify them? Most projected rotatioins only go out 3-4 days.

    Thanks!

  14. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@Big Mike: Thanks! I’d dump anyone who starts after Tuesday of next week. Chances are that’s the last we’ll see of them.

  17. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @Elijah: Always.

@big o: For three innings at least, or until Joba is lifted.

  18. royce! says:
    (link)

Got a problem… My C is Bengie, who has been so-so lately, and now seems to be out with a bruised finger or something. Should I still start him next week, or drop him for one of the following: Ianetta, Teagarden, Laird, Kendall, Buck, Paulino, Flowers, Hundley (been great lately, but the Padres only have 5 games and all at home)?

  19. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @royce!: I’d go with Buck.

  20. Carl Spackler says:
    (link)

Grey, so this looks like some of the projected 2 start pitchers for next week. Could you rank these.

Rick Porcello (DET): vs MIN (N. Blackburn); vs CWS (D. Hudson)

Randy Wells (CHC): vs PIT (K. Hart); vs ARZ (D. Davis)

Wade Davis (TB): vs BAL (J. Guthrie); vs NYY (C. Gaudin)

Chris Narveson (MLW): at COL (J. Marquis); at STL (J. Pineiro)

Zach Duke (PIT): vs LAD (C. Billingsley); at CIN (J. Lehr)

Tommy Hunter (TEX): at LAA (E. Santana); at SEA (R. Rowland-Smith)

  21. royce! says:
    (link)

How would you rank the following probable two-starters?:

    Duensing (@DET (Verlander), KC (Hochevar))
    Blackburn (@DET (Porcello), KC (Greinke))
    Bailey (STL (Piniero), PIT (Hart))
    Hudson (FLA (VandenHurk), WAS (Martin))
    Billingsley (@PIT (Z. Duke), COL (J. Marquis))

  22. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@Carl Spackler: Wells, Davis, Porcello, Duke, Narveson…

@royce!: Did you and Carl team up on this question? Duensing, Bills, Bailey, Hudson…

  23. royce! says:
    (link)

@Grey: Nah, we must have similar tastes in timing… though we do not share similar interests in probable two starters…

    Thanks for the help.

  24. big o says:

they’re running amok on the basepaths @ the new yankee stadium .
    amok , i’m tellin’ ya !!!

  25. Grey

    @big o: I think you could steal a base off of V-Mart.

  26. big o says:

    @Grey:
francona having lester (and others ?) fore-go the slide-step , in favor of greater accuracy .

  27. royce! says:
    (link)

Which 3 would you start next week: Stubbs, Swisher, Casey Blake, Aybar, Michael Aubrey?

Oh, and a heads up to Razzballers in Southern California: ALCS and NLCS tickets are still available through the Angels and Dodgers websites. I suppose it’s because neither team has clinched, but people are already paying a premium on ebay for tickets… clearly it pays to double check that a game’s not yet sold out before paying over face value for tickets. Just wanted people to know before they paid extra.

  28. royce! says:
    (link)

Oh, sorry, the Aybar is Willy.

  29. royce! says:
    (link)

And please add Aubrey Huff to that list.

  30. big o says:
    (link)

    varitek behind the plate .
before tonight , he was throwing out 13% .
if you ain’t taking 3rd in this game , you ain’t paying attention .

  31. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@royce!: Thanks for the heads up on tickets! Stubbs, Swisher and Aybar

    @big o: 13% — Wow.

  32. royce! says:
    (link)

@big o: Sweet! Maybe I can get a couple unlikely steals from Swisher!

@Grey: No problem! I moved to San Diego early in the summer, which has worked out great because amazingly there also seem to be a lot of Padres tickets left for the last week of play!

  33. big o says:
    (link)

lester down … line drive off leg

  34. Grey

  35. mr baseball says:
    (link)

we are talking about a solid shot off his knee – he left the game

  36. mr baseball says:
    (link)

interesting afact about lester that they brought up at the yankee game

as good as he is – he only has a 4 – 5 record against teams above 500 and is getting beaten up today by an above 500 team

  37. big o says:
    (link)

    yep …. gingerly .
took the shot off the inside of his right knee , it seems .

And all in all it was a good night because the indians didn’t lose their 12th game in a row and set a franchise record! And i was there to witness this “history”….? hahah…. there’s always next year….

  50. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@SamYo: I know, he’s been more valuable than Morneau on the season. Kinda crazy.

    @penpen: Lightning struck twice.

@big o: Nolasco was touched up for the Mets first homer with men on in two weeks. Should’ve been an even better outcome.

    @TYY: Ha! I wish I heard that.

  51. big o says:
    (link)

    @Grey:
    this is getting comical .
my anticipated pro-gression to the norm will have to wait for another day , it appears .
only two of my 10 hitters , tomorrow , has an historical batting average above .175 vs the opposing SP .

did i mention i only have one move left , on the season ?

  52. big o says:
    (link)

    @TYY:
glad i used up my next to last move , dropping soto

You think Madson has the best shot at SV in philly, right?

  56. papadawg says:
    (link)

My league doesn’t require us to name keepers until mid-March. So, once my team is out of it (which it is) I like to add a few players that would only cost me a last round pick IF I decided to keep them.

Do you see any 2010 value in any of these:
    Mat Gamel
    Sean Rodriguez
    Jesus Guzman
    Kevin Correia
    David Hernandez
    Chad Gaudin

    Thanks

  57. TYY says:
    (link)

    @big o: yes

    haha

  58. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@papadawg: I’d grab Gamel and Sean-Rod if it’s not going to cost you anything to see how they play into their team’s plans next year.

  59. paulzone says:
    (link)

can anyone suggest a SS that will have an incredible last 8 games or so with a bunch of steals? some fa’s in my league (sorted by last month):

punto, ryan, theriot, bloomquist, evereth cabrera to name a few…

i have izturis in there now and he has been kinda empty.

  60. papadawg says:
    (link)

Exactly – it costs nothing to pick them up now & decide later (and they would be dirt cheap to keep). I only have one or two slots, so thank you for helping me narrow it down.

    I love the blog.
    Keep up the great work!

  61. big o says:
    (link)

    @paulzone:
    definately not everth

  62. matthole says:
    (link)

@Grey: Thoughts on next weeks starting pitchers; have two slots remaining: Gaudin 2 start next; Stauffer, freddie Garcia, Cahill, Richard

Wins and K’s are both really close so I’ve been starting starters but now I’m only +1 and +3 in saves over the next two guys……I have Franklin on the bench and can try to get matt thornton off waivers too

Who’d you start for the final two spots?

    Thanks

  63. Steve says:
    (link)

Frasor! Love the vulture win at this time of the year.

  64. Bob says:
    (link)

@Steve: In a Yahoo league, I’m desperate for wins (I’m tied for first in a league where Other Guy has the exact number of wins as me) and short on innings, so I removed my closers today to try to preserve innings for starters. And of course, I lost Frasor’s vulture win. Sometimes, I’m just hating on life.

  65. Steve says:
    (link)

@Bob: As if everyday life isn’t cruel and stressful enough!

  66. Bob says:
    (link)

@Steve: Hehe. This should be our biggest stress in life. At least we have our health! Hopefully.

  67. Scary Larry says:
    (link)

    benching wright… is that crazy?

already played EE today at 3B, i can sub wright in still, i’m basically playing drew stubbs and ryan sweeney over wright… makes me sick, he’s been a total bust this year…

  68. peter says:
    (link)

@Steve: After giving up 4 ER in his last 3.2 IP, and no saves since 9/12, Frasor owed you.

  69. Scary Larry says:
    (link)

@peter: thank god, needed that from frasor….

and ubaldo’s given up 3 already, awesome, i’m throwing him vs. wainy tonight, what a pickle….

  70. Steve says:
    (link)

The Dodgers bullpen is considered by some to be the best in baseball.

Me and the Wolfman beg to differ.

  71. Steve says:
    (link)

    And you Dodger hitters?

You’re an inning too late. Wankers.

    I hate you all.

  72. Scary Larry says:

Either of these starts going to return a QS?
    Lowe @ Was
    Rowland-Smith @ Tor

  74. peter says:
    (link)

@Steve: Unforgivable. I have to admit, I kind of saw it coming… “what?” I had thought to myself. “The Dodgers scored more than 1 run with *Wolf* on the mound?!?! Too good to last.”

  75. knighttown says:
    (link)

Has anyone ever lost a draft simply because of their relief pitchers? While finishing 3rd of 11 teams in saves? I’m tied for first and am rocking 5 RP’s (2 snuck into SP slots) and here are their ERA’s and WHIP’s for the past two weeks:

    1. Rivera – 3.85 ERA, 1.29 WHIP
    2. Rodney – 5.40 ERA, 1.5 WHIP
    3. Guetierrez – 6.35 ERA, 1.59 WHIP
    4. Morales – 9.81 ERA, 1.82 WHIP
    5. McDougall – 13.15 ERA, 3.1 WHIP

My 10′s in those categories are now 8′s and dropping…

  76. knighttown says:
    (link)

Weaver’s scheduled to pitch in the last game of the year against Texas. Do teams with nothing to gain often mess with that to set up their rotation?

  77. peter says:
    (link)

@knighttown: When teams have nothing to play for, it’s hard to predict the last 2-3 starts of the season. Especially when the pitcher, like Weaver, has already thrown 200+ innings. You probably won’t know if they’re pitching, for sure, until a couple days before.

  78. Martin says:
    (link)

would u start liriano tomorrow vs. KC?

  79. joe says:

    Happ v Houston(Lopez) & FL (Sanchez)
John Sanchez v AR (Davis) & @ SD (Mujica)
    Billingsley @ SD (Stauffer)
Porcello v Min (Blackburn) & v CHW (Hudson)
Kuroda @ Pitt (Duke) v COL (Marquis)

    Thank you jedi master

  80. joe says:
    (link)

@martin: I say no because Liriano hasn’t been performing lately, this is also his first start since the bull pen and that transition is tough, a lot of pitchers get shelled coming out of the pen and into a starting role… but you can await grays’ answer too

  81. Steve says:
    (link)

@peter: I’m hating on Gregerson and Blalock too.

  82. big o says:

you , Kurt Suzuki , for the 2nd straight year ,
are the Oakland Athletics’ Most Valuable Player .

    well done .

  83. Martin says:
    (link)

@joe- Thanks, I agree with you however, I’m just curious as if Grey has any special insight.

  84. Scary Larry says:

  85. big o says:

    (link)

De la Rosa, Wells, or Rowland-Smith for tomorrow (Sunday)? Thanks!

  87. Steve says:
    (link)

@Steve: Oh Gregerson – it just gets better.

    A two-out, two-strike grand slam. By a guy who was 0-fer his previous 18.

As Johnny Drama would say, thanks, bro.

I’m a Mr. B of some long standing, but my allegiance has been sorely put to the test this day.

  88. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @struggler: Rowland-Smith

    @Martin: I wouldn’t.

@joe: Cain, Sanchez, Happ, Bills, Kuroda…

@Prince: All three? Rowland-Smith if one.

    @Steve: Yeah, killed me too.

  89. knighttown says:
    (link)

So, with my comments in post #81 above, I now need to drop a few closers to help my ratios. I’m as good as I’m going to be in saves. If I ignore saves, which of the following can be upgraded with Mr. B’s or even SP’s.

    Guetierrez, McDougall, Rodney, Morales.

Who should I target for WHIP as a Mr. B. Assume everyone is available as there are no holds.

    Tied first…but it’s precarious!

  90. joe says:
    (link)

@Gray: thanks, I forgot to throw Hanson in there b/c i thought he was getting shut down, would he fit right after cain?

  91. joe says:
    (link)

Also, who do you like between Billy Butler and Joey Votto this week?

  92. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@knighttown: Why would you keep any of them if you don’t need saves? Are you afraid of someone in your league getting them? If so, then why not just bench them? Morales isn’t the closer anymore so you can lose him either way. Some MRs are Wuertz, Hughes, Guerrier…

    @joe: re: Hanson – Yup… Votto

I know wainy got me a win, i logged how many innings, and its showing nothing from saturday… I know they’ll fix it but its pretty annoying considering you pay $125 for a premium league….

    Other than that I know i’m winning, so i can’t complain….

But anyway, imagine you’re the Seattle manager this afternoon. Your starter has given you 7 pretty good innings. Maybe you weren’t watching or something, but he just gave a up a couple in the 7th, so it’s 3-2.

Then you tack one on in your half of the eighth and it’s now 4-2. So you think, phew, we probably dodged one there. My guys at about 100 pitches, let’s get the bullpen going to mop this up.

Actually no – let’s leave him in there. I’d rather see how the bullpen goes with two on and nobody out.

Oh – that didn’t go so well, did it? What? We lost? Was I asleep or something?

Can someone who knows more about baseball than me explain any of this to me?

my last question for the season… orlando cabrera or rafeal furcal this week? i have furcal right now, but i’m worried they might bench him at the end of the week to rest for playoffs.

Who do you like better Wade Davis vs BAL or Gaudin vs KC?

  103. Jo says:

WADE DAVIS… he’s a baller, Gaudin could do good but it just seems too risky to me… plus, last time davis went against BAL he pitched a complete game shutout w/ 10k’s

@Steve: Nice rant. I saw that with Miguel Batista blowing Rowland-Smith’s game. R-S deserved better.

@Jo: They might bench him one game, they won’t bench him all weekend. I’d go with Furcal.

    @GTS: Davis

I would greatly appreciate some final advice for the h2h league.

I’m neck and neck going into the final week, and might have a slight edge in hitting cats, so I need to make my pitching count this week.

I’m tied in wins and saves and slightly behind in WHIP and ERA, but if I could lock up two of those four categories, I think I could win.

I have three closers (Bailey, Nunez, Fuentes) leaving four total spots for starting pitchers, one of which will be taken by Javier Vasquez. The other three can be filled by Duensing, Arroyo, Jonathon Sanchez, Billingsley, or De La Rosa, or I could drop any of them for any hodgepadre or Rowland-Smith or someone else.

I’ve also been musing a strategy of pulling all my closers and putting RP eligible SP’s in place (Duensing, Tejeda, Rowland-Smith could work) in order to try and lock up wins and K’s.

    Any thoughts?

Martin Prado or Ian Kinsler for the final week?

    Grey,

Planning to start Rajai, Werth, Lind…

need to pick one more from this group:

Billy Butler, Granderson, Beltran, Cargo (I have a feeling that you’ll go here)…

  108. Steve says:
    (link)

@Grey: Yeah – when him and Wolf were two of my last four starts for the year, it’s a bit hard to take.

On the bright side, George of the Roses eeked out a win. Loaded the bases twice for Albert and only gave up 3. I think you have to consider that a pretty good result.

These things are relative in the Kingdom of Albert.

I have 2 decisions to make:

    Fernando Rodney or Jose Valverde

    Matt Weiters or Kurt Suzuki

Also, different league…pick one to sit: Rajai, Bruce, McLouth, Werth, Carlos Lee?

    need R, BA most…(sit McLouth?)

Thanks for all your help down the stretch…Hope to end 3 for 3 this week!

Remember like, 10 hours ago when I ranted about losing my league because of my closers? Fernando Rodney and his 0.1 IP, 81.82 ERA and 9.09 WHIP did not help. Dropping all closers does worry me because not many guys are still playing and #1 guy could move up a point or two (with no risk of ERA/WHIP losses).

  113. knighttown says:
    (link)

I finally had the ‘nads to drop BJ Upton last week and of course, the leader picked him up to have him go .444 with 2 steals in the past week.

  114. Lava says:
    (link)

@Grey: I might, but it’s hard to say. I’d probably lose WHIP and ERA too, if I throw that many SP out there, which adds up to a good chunk of categories.

  115. Grey

    Grey says:

@knighttown: That sucks, but it was the move to make.

@Lava: Then don’t do the extra SPs.

What do you think about starting Nolasco @ ATL or Jimenez @ LA? I’m in a daily lineup league so I might bench both of those guys. I’m already going to drop Baker because of his matchup @ DET and pick up Wade Davis.

  117. Grey

    Grey says:

@GTS: Ubaldo’s been beat up pretty badly by the Dodgers this year, and the same with Nolasco, I’d sit them if you can’t take the risk.

  118. CocoPoolies says:

Here’s the issue. I’m +4 on wins and will have +1 or 2 starts over my opponent this week. I am currently -1 in Ks and +1 in saves. My opponent and I both have staffs that K a lot of people (we’ve been #1 and #2 in the roto all season for Ks [however, he has Josh Johnson, who might be done for the season?]). He owns the Aardsma and Broxton, no other closers to start. Question is…

Do I run three closers out there this week (all are top 15 guys, no slouches)

    OR

do I start Bills @SD, Nolasco @ATL, or Ubaldo @LA in place of that third closer?

    Thanks.

  119. CocoPoolies says:

Obviously Grey isn’t going to suggest Nolasco or Ubaldo based on what he typed in the post DIRECTLY ABOVE MINE. My bad for not reading through, please don’t ban me. That said, I forgot to include a pitcher. Please allow the edit:

    OR

Bills @SD or Cueto v. PIT?

One good thing about being absolutely destroyed 18-3 is that I would have lost no matter what I did heh. I just hope his guys are spent for next week. I do not want this guy to win again.

    H2H Weekly 11 Hitting Cats

Not sure if I should keep Olivo in over maybe Montero or some other ugly thing on the wire.

Also I am trying hot hands so I have Butler – R Davis – Coghlan in over Werth – Ibanez – Either but I getting cold feet sitting at least Either. I think Davis has to stay need steals.

@cheeeeeeeeeeeeeze@Grey: : Respectfully, think you want to re-think Kinsler/Prado. Kinsler just came off series at home against Sea and Laa and slugged a combined .333 (at home). He is facing an average era of 3.40. Prado slugged combined .557 against Fla (the toughest) and Was (he killed) and is facing average era of 4.77. Plus, Prado gets one more game. This could go the other way, but tea leaves point to Prado for me.

byrd takes his base (ball four) after the 3rd out has already been recorded .

    @Dumbmutt: I’d go with Montero.

how do they record the at bat ??

    5th inning … 2 out … andrus on 2nd .
byrd takes ball 4 , but andrus gets caught stealing 3rd ,
even before byrd leaves the batters box .
so they make the guy walk down and touch 1st base .
(this according to cbs’ recap of today’s game)

and just walked back to the dug-out .
