Tall Chris Young Fails Dexterity Test
It’s analogy time. Stolen bases = candy. Chris ‘Tall’ Young = baby. Dexter Fowler’s 5 SBs are thus like taking candy from a baby (or, as Steve Rogers would sing, like takin’ can-dee from a bay-bee). It’s hard not to love Dexter Fowler right now. He’s everything we hoped Cameron Maybin would be. He’s now to the point where he’s must own in 10 and 12 team leagues especially when facing the man we shall now call Cristal (Chris Tall) Young (as opposed to his doppelganger Krispie Young). But he’s still a rookie OF straight from AA (insert trite Josh Hamilton joke). His .335 / 9 HR / 20 SB line in 400 ABs at AA does not equate to much more than a 5th OF when equivalized for MLB. But neither did Hanley Ramirez’s. And you never know in Colorado. So if he’s available in your league, you’d be more of a Dexter if you didn’t take a chance on him. If he’s already snapped up, look to trade that bottom starter, reliever, or OF you’ve got. Anyway, here’s what else we saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:
Brad Hawpe – Left on a stretcher after Hundley hit him in the neck with a pickoff throw. Sounds like someone had some misplaced aggression about Fowler. Hopefully Hawpe’s okay… Because I have him on a team! No, I’m kidding. I don’t own him.
Chris Young – 3 IP, 8 ER. Starting a flyball pitcher in Coors is a risky propostion as it is, then throw in he’s clocked at about 17 seconds to home.
Hanley Ramirez – Hit by a Maine pitch in yesterday’s game, sending fantasy baseball owners to the ground screaming, “Why don’t you hit Maybin?!” The x-rays came back negative, which is oddly positive — why they don’t just say it’s positive is a modern mystery for The Jonas Brothers to solve in a bad Disney Channel movie. Hanley will probably miss a few days to give his hand time to be less boo-booish.
Joel Hanrahan – 1/3 IP, 3 ER. Hanrahanananananan is one of my biggest disappointments this year. All you have to do is save a game every 8th day, is that so hard? Someone in the comments yesterday mentioned Julian Tavares as a possible replacement. With a WHIP under 1 and a 3.12 ERA, it’s possible. I don’t think Mock, who also gave up 3 earned in two-thirds of an inning, is the answer. Kip Wells may be the answer. Though the question is unprintable.
Ryan Madson – Got the save. Brad Lidge has knee inflammation. Which doesn’t sound bad until you realize that he had an MRI last week that was just disclosed yesterday. So Lidge’s hurting for over a week with knee problems? This smells like a future DL stint. Own Madson in every league you can.
LaTroy Hawkins – The Valgreen’s is shut down again for a few days. A DL stint seems likely here, as well.
Troy Tulowitzki – The Rockies made a questionable move yesterday benching Tulo because of his slump. He just needs to hit his way out of it and, as they say in the third grade, stop making a federal case out of it. His BABIP is saying he’s been extremely unlucky. Maybe he sits out for a few days, but I don’t think they’re boneheaded to hold him out for that long. The good news is Barmes will play short and Stewart will see time at 2nd base. I’m not paying a lot, but I am buying into a rebound.
Ryan Zimmerman – One N, 2 HRs. I hated him so much last year that I’m finding it hard to get excited about Zimmerman this year no matter what he does. Maybe if he stole 5 bases in a game…
Brian Bannister – 7 IP, 1 ER, 1 hit. And six walks. Belch. You do what you do, but I wouldn’t start him in any league.
David Purcey – 5 IP, 6 ER. Jose Guillen hit two home runs off him. Someone needs to be on Bully Beatdown!
Anibal Sanchez – 6 IP, 6 ER. Sticking with the theme of starters I’m not crazy about, here’s number three.
Rickie Weeks – HR and 4 RBIs. Just stay healthy…. Or at least have an injury right before Gordan Beckham gets called up.
Johnny Cueto – 7 IP, 1 ER. 2.19 ERA on the year. Was really impressed with what I saw yesterday with Cueto. He seems to be very composed on the mound and his stuff is filthy. He won’t stay under a 3 ERA all year, but 3.50 seems attainable.
Carlos Delgado – News is this Latin 36-year-old is having trouble with his hip. When Tatis took the field to replace him, Delgado yelled, “Stay off my lawn!”
Scott Baker – 6 IP, 4 ER, 7 Ks. Hey, it’s an improvement, right? Now see if you can trade him.
Raul Ibanez – Grand slam, has 6 HRs on the year and a .342 average. Sure, he’s not hitting .340 this year. He won’t break 30 HRs either, but I don’t think he’s necessarily a sell high guy either.
Justin Verlander – 7 IP, 9 Ks. Well overdue bounceback start from Verlander. He’s a 4 ERA pitcher, so when you have a 9 ERA, you have some correcting to do. Also, King of the Obvious says, “The Yankees are currently reeling.”
Tim Wakefield – 7 IP, 0 ER, 1 Hit. That’s Wake on waivers. Here’s you picking up Wake. Here’s Wake giving up 8 earned in 2 1/3 innings.
Carlos Pena – 9th homer yesterday. Could he hit 50? Maybe there’s a 10% chance, but 40 is in his sights. ‘Member when Sosa hit 20 HRs in June of ‘98? Now some of my entire teams don’t have 20 home runs. They do have 5 steals though. AmblyDexterous!

trade Derrek Lee for Tulo?
April 28th, 2009 at 1:13 am
i didn’t hate Zimmerman last year, cause i just benched him. This year, he’s going 0/4 if i’ve started him and he’s hitting 2 HR if i bench him. I really can’t say, he isn’t hitting the ball, but its always like a single and no Runs/RBIs. Thats why i like JJ Hardy. You bench him about 80% of the season and if he’s hot, you start him and he will hit 20 HR. Zimmerman is just driving me crazy.
I’ll now go shopping and get Dexter Fowler for Young. Thought about that yesterday but wasn’t ready to pull the trigger. Next thing i gotta say goodbye to Cameron Maybin, i’m at the end of my tether. And someone tell Corey Hart he better start hitting. Goddamn I’m pissed. Thank you Ryan Zimmerman! Sonavabench!

New Razzball Glossary Term Suggestion:
Two-Face: A pitcher who refuses to be labeled as a shitty pitcher or a good pitcher. He pitches great one week, sucks the next. Sucks again, pitches great after that. See John Maine.
Not really a totally serious suggestion, just venting because I was about 1 day away from dropping his ass but now I gotta string him along and hope he’s back to the pitcher he can be…until he sucks again..then is good…then sucks…..ad infinitum
April 28th, 2009 at 2:43 am
Dang, I just picked up Wake. I’m desperate for Wins and have Felix and Danks leading my staff (and, supposedly, Oswalt but…) and figured Wake stays in games for a solid team so might be a cheap source for Ws.
April 28th, 2009 at 3:15 am
@john: Pretend he doesn’t exist. He is terrible. A one man WHIP wrecking crew. Piss on Maine.
I just pulled of this trade in my money league.
Gave up Abreu, T. Hunter and H. Bell for Beltran.
I had Dukes on the bench to replace Hunter with, you guys think I might have given up too much?
April 28th, 2009 at 3:23 am
What’s good Grey–you been watching I Love Money 2?
2 quick things:
Start Phil Hughes tonight?
Do you like Romero/Zimmerman better than Kershaw/Scherzer for the season?
April 28th, 2009 at 4:10 am
Anyone else worried that Oswalt isn’t striking anyone out? 32IP/18K
April 28th, 2009 at 4:16 am
pitch or ditch?:
E.Jackson vs. NYY

April 28th, 2009 at 4:56 am
I know this might be a “kiss of death” to my squad,
but I am letting Cole Hamels sit the bench on my squad
for this evening. Every team has that one team that owns them,
and for the past few seasons the Nats have been a thorn in
the side of the Sillies. Add to that the late July early August
weather we are having, and CBP is acting like a launching pad
once again. Just not a great situation for Hamels tonight IMO.
However, get all of your hitters from these squads into your lineups,
the ball is definitely jumping.
April 28th, 2009 at 4:57 am
Had high hopes for Hanrahan as well; & hate to bail on a player so early that I thought was such a great value on draft day. But is it already time to admit erroneous judgement, drop him for Madson, and hope that Lidge needs knee replacement?
April 28th, 2009 at 5:04 am
@Rich I hope you’re right, i’m trying to get Hamels off someone in my league. I know he’ll pull it around, its cold and rainy out there and he’s like a kid without his parka.
Can you guys please help rank these players:
Alexei, Stephen Drew, Aaron Hill
and
Victorino, BJ Upton, and Nelson Cruz.
I got Upton for Wandy and i thought it was a steal.
April 28th, 2009 at 5:18 am
@elRioCaballo:
I’d rank the MIs in the order you listed them.
The relative value of the OFs depends on your team’s needs, so it’s hard to say.
Upton for Wandy seems like quite a steal to me.
April 28th, 2009 at 5:20 am
I would like to add Ryan Madson; who could I dump?
(12-team ML, start 1 catcher)
Lineup: Inge, Votto, Pedroia, Tulowitzki, Wright, Werth, Bruce, Pence, Kemp. Bench: Soto, Kubel, Weeks, Hardy, Fowler. DL: Guerrero.
Rotation: Vazquez, Harden, Liriano, Weaver, Slowey.
Bullpen: Qualls, Cruz.
Go out and get Madson?
April 28th, 2009 at 5:39 am
@Eric H.: I’d dump Weeks, who’s not going to supplant Pedroia.
@sean: Sell high.
April 28th, 2009 at 5:45 am
Anyone know if the Lidge injury is serious? Is Madsen worth a pickup over somelike like Corpas? Corpas is killing me with ratios.
Also, Taveras or Fowler?
April 28th, 2009 at 5:58 am
@Baron Von Vulturewins:
You think Oswalt will regress from his current line?
I’ve avoided him in drafts the past couple of years, but he did quite well in the second half last year after a mediocre first half that featured a handful of horrible starts. Even though I don’t trust him much, I think I might try to trade for him if I can get him at a good price (read: if he continues to post mediocre numbers in the next few starts).
April 28th, 2009 at 6:22 am
@John – I kept Maine on the bench last night – he was on strict probation; if he was as bad a previously, i would dump him. Watched the game, and he was excellent. He would have pitched shut-out ball except that Sheffield dropped a ball a little-leaguer would have been ashamed of. There must be something catching in left-field for the Mets, as Dan Murphy has been horrendous as well. Actually, the entire Met staff outside of Santana is questionable.
@sickmangarner – Avoid that temptation. Wakefield can do damage to your WHIP/ERA that will take weeks to overcome.
@Zebo – Great idea! You just inspired me to make the same offer, as in one of my leagues Drew is on the DL. Tulu will recover; as Rudy states, his BABIT is healthy. Lee might be toast.
@JPH – I am starting Hughes tonight. My hunch is that he will do better on the road then in front of the home crowd, which will be merciless if he crashes and burns.
April 28th, 2009 at 6:23 am
Checked my rosters at 7:15 and was too late to get Hamilton out of my lineup. Would have replaced him with Fowler. SONOVABENCH.
April 28th, 2009 at 6:26 am
Help!! Should I drop Morgan for Fowler??
April 28th, 2009 at 6:28 am
@Jim:
Yes, more upside.
April 28th, 2009 at 6:34 am
Carlos Pena is quickly becoming a fan favorite in the Hippo Household.
April 28th, 2009 at 6:41 am
@BigFatHippo:
Fantasy baseball is quickly becoming a bane to my enjoyment of the Red Sox season.
How can I enjoy the Sawx 11 game win streak when my RCL team upgraded from the traditional toilet swirl to the new high speed jet flush system. People say it is better to use less water. HAH!
April 28th, 2009 at 6:54 am
@BigFatHippo:
Do you know Carlos freakin Pena appeared on waivers in my 10 team league a few weeks ago? God damned guy in first got him based on priority.
April 28th, 2009 at 7:03 am
@BSA: High speed jet flush, Ha!
@knighttown: Ouch, I just lost out on McCann because of waiver priority.
April 28th, 2009 at 7:04 am
Some days you read the roundup and there aren’t many things today. Today is NOT one of those days. This could be a big week. I’ve got some questions?
1) Picked up Fowler after slotting Drew into DL
2) Start E. Jax tonight?
3) Sitting on an offer of my GoodFace for his Cueto. Pull the trig?
4) Vulture Saves- I’ve got Qualls as a solid and then Corpas and Morrow (who I can slot in as SP). Are they more likely to get short and long term saves then Marsden or Hawkins who are available and on waivers, respectively. I’d have to drop Choo, Peralta, Stewart, E.Jax or Felipe to make room for one or both. Or goodface if I don’t do Cueto. Or Beltre.
Lineup:
SP- Beckett, Oswalt, Cain, Vazquez, Weaver, E. Jax, Jobacum, Romero (DL)
RP- Qualls, Corpas, Morrow
IF- Prince, Teix, Alexei, Stewart, Goodface, Felipe, Chipper, Beltre, Peralta
OF- Ibanez, Braun, Upton, Bruce, Choo, Fowler
April 28th, 2009 at 7:05 am
edit: to say in sentance 1, not today.
April 28th, 2009 at 7:10 am
As I write this I realize I have too many “too good to drop” MI guys clogging up my roster. None of them are playing well so tough to trade without giving up 10 cents on the dollar.
Where to go with:
Alexei, Peralta, GoodFace, Felipe, Drew (DL), Stewart.
I’m obviously most comfortable with Alexei going forward but he’s also my most tradeable asset. What kind of OF bat could he bring back? Would you feel comfortable with Drew or Peralta manning SS?
April 28th, 2009 at 7:17 am
Hello hello! I am short on closers with street/corpas, soriano, bj ryan, and hanrahanz. Should I add Ray or Madson, and who should I drop?
Much regardz.
April 28th, 2009 at 7:27 am
Which of these trades do you like for me?
jon sanchez and kuroda for duke and lindstrom?
harang/meche/scherzer/myers for ziegler? who can i get (should target) for ziegler?
gallaraga/edwin jackson and holland for ziegler?
basically i need starting pitching and i have way too many closers. soria, wilson, ziegler, downs, lindstrom and i even have hawkins. i lucked into ziegler and downs when i drafted them in a 12 team, 40 man roster league.
April 28th, 2009 at 7:28 am
@Drev: Don’t trade him straight up for Bonifacio, but remember, he’s a 32-going-on-33 year old power pitcher in a hitter’s park with a sinking K-rate and a rising WHIP. Also, he pitched in the WBC, which eats arms. (I have Peavy; I am similarly worried about Peavy.)
His name-recognition probably outweighs his actual value at this point, so dangling him to a panicking, pitching starved team for some tantalizing package seems like a not-bad idea. I guarantee there are cheaper pitchers out there (Slowey, Gil Meche, Nolasco-if-he-stays-healthy) who will outperform Oswalt, and can be had for less than what you’d get back in a trade of Oswalt right now.
I think that, say, Jeremy Guthrie plus what you get in a trade for Oswalt is better, long-term, than Oswalt.
As for trading for Oswalt, caveat emptor. I wouldn’t give up anything too shiny to get him.
@Jim: Can’t you drop anyone else? Nyjer has trade value.
@knighttown: Get Cueto. Yes!
I have Jackson and I’m sitting him tonight.
If you have Chipper and Ian Stewart, Beltre seems droppable to me.
@BigFatHippo: Don’t fret on McCann. He kind of smells like a full season of “Lost” to me right now, if you get my meaning.
You know what’s important for hitting in the major leagues? Your eyes.
@knighttown: Drew is very viable. If you talk up Alexei’s recent slam and steals, you should be able to get a 4/5th round OFer, like McLouth. Maybe that’s pie in the sky, but that’s what you should be aiming for.
Or try to trade Peralta. He’s just overkill on your roster.
@johnson21: Is Hanrahan droppable right now? I’m not so sure. There’s no obvious replacement in the Nats pen. (God help them if they turn to Kip Wells.) I’d hold all until something more happens with Ray or Lidge’s knee.
April 28th, 2009 at 7:35 am
@knighttown: You have to do that GoodFace for Cueto trade. As Grey has said, Cueto is going to have a good season. GoodFace cannot be trusted to be a consistent performer. His value is dropping by the day.
As far as your saves, yeah, you gotta figure out something there. Not sure if I would drop any of those guys though. I’ll leave that one to the experts on this site.
April 28th, 2009 at 7:35 am
@wisdomofcrowds: Should I sit Bruce tonight against Wandy so I can start Vernon Wells against Meche?
Wells has 3 HR in 28 ABs against Meche lifetime; Bruce is allergic to lefties.
Also starting Fowler against Chad Gaudin. Hoping for at least 4 SBs.
April 28th, 2009 at 7:36 am
@Baron Von Vulturewins: p.s. Bruce is 0-for-12 against Wandy lifetime, with 8 Ks.
Ouch.
April 28th, 2009 at 7:40 am
I’d definitely pick up Madson. He’s throwing some hot stuff so far. With Lidge temporarily out it looks good for him.
April 28th, 2009 at 7:41 am
Hey!
My top 3 SP’s are all on the DL. I have Sandoval as a back up catcher that i dont really play.
I think i can get Kyle Lohse or Galarraga from a team in my league.
Who do you like better? I would think that Lohse might have a chance for more wins being on the Cards, but im not sure.
Or is trading Sandoval for one of these guys underselling him?
HELPPPPPP
April 28th, 2009 at 7:42 am
Check this out – The Detroit News suggests that Dontrelle Willis (anxiety disorder) could return to the Tigers by next week.
Anxiety Disorder? As a MLB pitcher? Not the kind of info you want made public.
How many fans will be eating that up? He is a perfect candidate to throw at Fenway and Yankee Stadium!
April 28th, 2009 at 7:49 am
@Baron Von Vulturewins: All McCann has to do is visit Steak and Shake and Lasik.* Get a meal for under $4, a nip a zip and a zap there and you’re on your way.
*Patent pending.
@Zebo: I think you can trade less for Tulo at this point.
@Bob from Germany: Ha!
@john: Hehe
@Emporers Monkey: That’s a lot, but you did get the best player in the trade, so it’s not awful.
@JPH: Yeah, of course. Quality of TV fell off when Becky left though. Love to see Saaphyri win, but don’t think she has what it takes. It’s a riot. Possibly retarded, but in a funny There’s Something About Mary way. I want Kershaw/Scherzer. Start Hughes (in 12 team leagues or deeper).
@Mowses: Start Hughes (in 12 team leagues or deeper).
@zombie: I wouldn’t drop Hanrahanananan.
@elRioCaballo: Alexei, Hill, Drew… BJ Upton, Victorino then Nelson Cruz.
It is a steal.
@Chris: Corpas over Madson. Fowler.
@Hardcore Midget: Ouch
@Jim: More or less apples for apples, doesn’t really make sense to make that move.
@knighttown: Don’t start, I’d want Cueto, trade Alexei for a 2nd to 3rd outfielder. I’d want at least Ibanez.
@johnson21: Drop Soriano for Madson
@dtv: I like this for you — harang/meche/scherzer/myers
@Baron Von Vulturewins: Wells makes sense there.
@BSA: Old news, man. You must’ve missed that roundup.
@BigFatHippo: Ha!
April 28th, 2009 at 7:58 am
@Grey: That’s why I am in last place!
Or I disregarded anything about Dontrelle Willis.
April 28th, 2009 at 8:04 am
@Grey: Fowler for Kershaw?
I know the Kershaw owner in my league is desperate for steals. He no doubt cried himself to sleep when he saw Fowler plucked quickly from free agency by the Baron’s greedy fingers.
April 28th, 2009 at 8:07 am
@BSA – Greinke has apparently recovered from his anxiety disorder. Willis has more wrong with him then his mental illness, however. His mechanics have been off for quite awhile. He did well in his last minor league start, but I would have to see him pitch several quality starts before even considering putting him on my waiting list.
April 28th, 2009 at 8:11 am
@BigFatHippo: Didn’t Greinke have an anxiety disorder? Actually, I think he still does but he manages to cope.
Book it: two years from now Dontrelle will open the season with 25 scoreless innings.
April 28th, 2009 at 8:11 am
@Paulie Allnuts:
Since I may be working on turning an attempt at serious RCL team into a Razzball effort, I’ll keep an eye on him.
April 28th, 2009 at 8:12 am
Same question as Baron’s, but with Holliday vs. Millwood (in TEX!) instead of Wells vs. Meche. Holliday’s been ice cold so far this season, but Arlington’s as good a place as any to break out of a slump. Sit Bruce for Holliday?
April 28th, 2009 at 8:13 am
@Griff: whoops, supposed to be @ BSA
@Caw Caw Eagle Claw: I’d try for someone else. It’s underselling.
@Baron Von Vulturewins: I’d want Kershaw.
@Dingo: Play Holliday
April 28th, 2009 at 8:18 am
@Griff: Either way, you’re way off if you think Dontrelle has anything left. He doesn’t. Move along, move along, nuttin to see here…….
April 28th, 2009 at 8:19 am
In what order would you rank Liriano, Felix and Cain for the rest of the season?
April 28th, 2009 at 8:23 am
@Grey: Thanks!
How about this trade offer:
I give: R Soriano, Fuentes, Adam LaRoche
I get: Brandon Phillips
too much chump dump to be acceptable?
April 28th, 2009 at 8:23 am
dukes or fowler? (i kinda like dukes)
April 28th, 2009 at 8:24 am
Also – potential trade partner has Phillips on his trading block and is asking for RP and 1B
April 28th, 2009 at 8:31 am
Is Ian Stewart and Torii Hunter too much to offer for Alexei Ramirez right now? Too little?
How about O Hudson and Hunter for A-Ram?
April 28th, 2009 at 8:39 am
Torri hunter is too little for alexei. If you can land that you should. Ian stewart is like a young mark derosa with way more upside. me mmight just be eligible at every position at the end of next month.
I would sell I Torri hunter as high as I could. he is good but he is not this good.
@Vince: F-Her, Cain, Liriano
@Dingo: I want Phillips there. re: chump dump — never know. Try it.
@albertalbert: If you need straight speed, Fowler. Dukes is a better player as of right now though.
@Frank Rizzo: A bit too much. I don’t mind the Hudson one.
April 28th, 2009 at 8:44 am
@Baron Von Vulturewins: Who do you want: Hardy vs Peralta
April 28th, 2009 at 8:48 am
12 Team/ROTO/non-keeper
–Start J.Sanchez against LAD tonight?
–Which of the following Outfielder’s should be owned: C.Gomez,Maybin,D.Young
–Should I own R.Wolf instead of J.Sanchez?
<3
April 28th, 2009 at 8:48 am
I flipped Snider for Fowler on the waivers, and I recommend you all do the same.
@Vince: actually I’d go – Cain, F-Her, Liriano. Felix’s health is a liability.
@Dingo: Phillips is a top 5 2B, but that doesn’t say a lot. Don’t give up TOO much. Something like a top 5 CL, and a 10th-15th ranked 1B, not much more.
@Frank Rizzo: Feel it out with just Torii straight up, see if he bites. Don’t package unless you absolutely have to. Start small, as they say.
@Schatzi: Don’t start him — Own Gomez. Yes, Wolf.
April 28th, 2009 at 8:57 am
who do you like guys like in a beltran for teixera swap?
April 28th, 2009 at 9:04 am
@Grey: I should still be starting Liriano every chance I get, right?
April 28th, 2009 at 9:04 am
@ABell: I guess it all depends on team needs, but Teixera is definitely the better of the two.
April 28th, 2009 at 9:09 am
5 solid OFs for 4 spots is killing me. its sonuvabench almost every night. manny, victorino, markakis and beltran played last night, while dunn went yard on the bench. my MI is weak w kendrick and peralta/tejada. but i can’t seem to find a good solution. A Gonz is my 1B but i figure i could maybe move him for something. i don’t know.
@JPH: Yup
@ABell: You need to trade an OF for a MI then.
April 28th, 2009 at 9:12 am
@Denys: Actually I’d like to give up 2 players for one. I have too many good players and am running into starting issues. I was hoping giving up Hunter and either Stewart or Hudson would land me a potential upgrade at either 2b or SS since my current roster has Hudson/Stewart for 2b and Drew (DL)/Theriot for SS.
Hoping to upgrade and get rid of some OF.
April 28th, 2009 at 9:20 am
What are your thoughts on Milton Bradley? He’s clogging up my roster but I can’t shake the suspicion that he’ll get another .950 OPS next month…
April 28th, 2009 at 9:33 am
@Baron Von Vulturewins:
So is it worth looking into dealing Peavy for a guy like Slowey coupled with a nice OF? ie. Peavy for Slowey and one of (Crawford, Sizemore, or Bay). Peavy’s my “ace” but I also have Harden, Vasquez, Lowe, Lester, Garza, Lilly, Price, Scherzer, with smoltz and carpenter coming soon with exploded elbows. So do I have enough in the pitching tank to try something like this?
April 28th, 2009 at 9:36 am
what do you think about dunn for uggla? that would have to be the epitome of equal value right?
@Brian: I think he’s too talented to drop in any league deeper than a 10 team league, but I also wouldn’t want him on my team.
@ABell: Yup
April 28th, 2009 at 9:38 am
Is Jose Guillen worth supplanting Dan Murphy as a 5th OF? Maybe he stays hot, or maybe he hits .230. Either way, isn’t 25/90 a good possibility?
April 28th, 2009 at 9:39 am
or how about even Bruce and Peavy for Sizemore and Slowey? too mucho?
April 28th, 2009 at 9:40 am
@BigFatHippo: Tongue in cheek, my friend. I don’t think Dontrelle will ever pitch another full season in the bigs. Hell, he may never win another game. Greinke’s career trajectory is truly remarkable.
April 28th, 2009 at 9:44 am
i have this attachment to Paul Maholm, which is making it hard for me to let him go in a trade. Yes he’s on the Pirates and they’ve been one of the worst teams for so long… but something just makes me think this may be the year they turn it around. Their pitching has been one of the best (lead the NL in era) they’re at the bottom for Ks but also for Hits. Their also one of the top in Hits, Runs, RBIs. I think Maholm can top 220 innings and also get double digit wins(15?). I’m i just crazy.. or is there some reason in my madness.
April 28th, 2009 at 9:45 am
Drop Raphael Soriano for Madson?
@VanHammersly: I’d prefer Guillen.
@matt dubya: I’d want the Peavy side, but it’s very even. And could go either way. Not a great trade for either.
@elRioCaballo: Maholm can be a quality 3rd starter. He’s fine, not sure he breaks the top 30 starters at the end of the year though.
@agarthered: Yup
April 28th, 2009 at 9:51 am
@matt dubya: I doubt you could trade Peavy for Sizemore, straight up. If you can, do that. In fact, if you can trade Peavy for anyone who was a first-three-rounds OF (basically, anyone from Braun and Sizemore down to Bay or possibly Kemp) you can consider it.
Just don’t trade Peavy for Slowey and Abreu, or Slowey and Torii Hunter, or Slowey and mid-range OF with showy numbers and limited upside.
Peavy is scuffling now but remember, he’s the kind of guy who can tear off three straight 13K performances and suddenly everyone’s singing and the sun is shining again.
@elRioCaballo: Depends what you’re trading him for. Here’s a look at the Pirates rotation that might enlighten you as to Maholm’s value going forward. Looks like he’s a sell-high(ish) guy:
http://www.rotoauthority.com/2009/04/pirates-have-best-rotation-in-baseball.html
@matt dubya: No, don’t do that. Would you trade Peavy for Sizemore? Absolutely. Would you trade Bruce for Slowey? No-bsolutey.
April 28th, 2009 at 9:56 am
@ GREY
Thanks dude, your the man!
April 28th, 2009 at 10:04 am
@Griff: Whew, thought you’d done lost your mind…………..
April 28th, 2009 at 10:04 am
Any of these trades you wouldn’t do? I am the Cruz side and am 12 12 12 12 in Run, HR, RBI, AVG…need SB.
Cruz for Crawford
Cruz for Abreu
Cruz for Ichiro
Cruz for Victorino
Will add Kershaw as a kicker if I get a nibble but no bite.
April 28th, 2009 at 10:13 am
@NoonTime: All are acceptable although Abreu really won’t net you too many additional SBs.
April 28th, 2009 at 10:29 am
Any thoughts on Felipe Paulino? (SP-HOU) He’s had two good outings so far. Walked 2 and struck out 10 in 12 innings. No homeruns given up either. High prospect on the Astros. Is he worth a flier as a two-start pitcher for next week with matchups against Washington and San Diego?
April 28th, 2009 at 10:33 am
Hi, great blog.
What do you think about Javier Vazquez’s line for the year, can he keep it up? Is a Vazquez for Morneau trade fair (i’m getting Morneau)?
Also, who do you think will have the better year, Adam Lind or Garret Atkins? Would you trade Lind for Atkins in a standard 5×5 league with 5 OF, CI, MI etc.
Thanks!
April 28th, 2009 at 10:35 am
Pablo Sandoval: a stolen base yesterday. I am growing to love him. He’s excruciating to watch when he’s missing pitches 5 feet out of the strike zone, but fun as hell to watch when he’s hitting them for 3-run home runs.
April 28th, 2009 at 10:35 am
How does an offer sound of R. Martin for Aj Burnett? or Magglio for Haren
April 28th, 2009 at 10:38 am
@Infamous: I’d rather have Martin than Burnett and Haren than Magglio. Just me though.
April 28th, 2009 at 10:40 am
@Infamous: Martin for Burnett seems ok. I’d rather have Martin. Magglio for Haren is a steal for the side getting Haren.
April 28th, 2009 at 10:43 am
12 team, 35 man roster keeper league (12 keepers/team). I’m pretty solid with SP: Burnett, Josh Johnson, Kazmir, Gallardo, Wandy, Myers as starters, Masterson in RP slot, bench of Jimenez, Penny, DL of Carpenter, Morales.
I could use an extra bat or two – another team has extra OFs, he ranks as Bruce, Manny, Hamilton, Cruz/Ludwick, Swisher. Remember, keeper league (I’d largely agree with his ranking). He’s desperate for SP
What would be fair value in a 1-for-1? How about a 2-for-2 if I throw in Jermaine Dye or Mags Ordonez?
I’m thinking Myers or Wandy for Cruz/Ludwick, or Kazmir/Ordonez for Hamiton/Ludwick.
April 28th, 2009 at 10:43 am
@ The thing is that I have Iannetta and Wieters on my bench. Is there another pitcher that would be more equal for giving up Martin then?
April 28th, 2009 at 10:43 am
I’m attempting to flip Mark DeRosa and the infamous Scott Baker for Way – Rod and Mike Napoli. I’m hoping that the position eligibilty is the deciding factor.
@Eric: I like those matchups, and I own him in a NL-Only league where he’s been fine.
@Pops: I like that for you.
April 28th, 2009 at 10:48 am
@Infamous: At some point you just have to take what you can get. Your trade options are limited by how many teams “need” a catcher, and Martin’s value isn’t exactly stellar. The best way to avoid the situation that you find yourself in is to not draft Martin (or any “top tier” catcher) in the first place. Especially if in a 1 C league. So the reality is AJ for Martin may be the best you can do and if you need an SP then go for it.
@TheQuestforMerlin: I’d want Morneau and Lind. I don’t think Vazquez will necessarily breakdown, but he could. I think the change to the new league could give him the boost he needs. But Morneau is still a lot safer and productive. in his own right.
@Homer at the Bat: Can you trade Myers or Ubaldo for Cruz, Ludwick or Swisher, in that order? That would be the best route. Lose two guys that aren’t going to help you much, for a guy that could.
April 28th, 2009 at 11:03 am
@Grey: I need some more help on my catcher situation. Would you trade Brandon Inge for Derek Lowe if you had Geovany Soto to start (12-team ML, one catcher starts)? See, the thing is, I’m not so sure I should sell high on Inge. In 2006, his last year as a full-time 3B, he hit .253 with 27 HRs, 83 RBIs and 7 SBs. Even if he hits .245 with 23 HRs, 75 RBIs and 5 SBs, isn’t he a great value at catcher in a season in which the catcher landscape is currently a total mess? I’m usually not blinded by hot/cold starts, but Inge is displaying better patience at the plate. Dump him?
@Eric H.: He’s going to cool off at some point, but he’s still all you need at catcher. Why not trade Soto for a better starter? Or hold Soto for a bit until he builds some trade value.
April 28th, 2009 at 11:43 am
@Baron i was thinking of (hopefully)getting Hamels for Maholm. Other trade: Cruz for Hamels… if all else fails Cruz/Maholm for Hamels/Wood
April 28th, 2009 at 11:51 am
is Derrek Lee on the disgraceful list with , cough, neck spasms, cough? Is he a Derrek Lee 33?
@Zebo: Is he on the DL? Haven’t heard that. Maybe the spasms were partly attributable to his struggles.
April 28th, 2009 at 12:09 pm
Grey, you seem more like a Tough Love fan if anything……which one of those chics would you rather hit with your louisville slugger?
Aaron Laffey…..hehehe, I thought he was garbage?
April 28th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
@elRioCaballo: I’d do any of those swaps. Though if your fellow owner would trade you Hamels straight up for Maholm, he deserves to be kicked out of the league for fantasy malpractice.
April 28th, 2009 at 12:15 pm
ahhh… i received a counter offer.. Victorino for Hamels.. I of course would get hamels leave me with Rios/Ethier/Kemp/BJUpton/Cruz
April 28th, 2009 at 12:19 pm
@Grey: Not DL bound yet. Sounds like they want to hold him out of the AZ series and bring him back on Wednesday.
@Rick Dempsey: I only allow myself one hour of crappy TV a night, Tough Love didn’t make the cut.
April 28th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
How good is Cruz? Is he better than Crispie Young? Torii Hunter? Before I get all tipsy on Cruz Kool-Aid and trade away a pitcher for him, what are reasonable expectations for him?
April 28th, 2009 at 12:24 pm
@Grey: If you just acquired a K-Rod, would you pick up a Putz to back him? Would recquire dropping an Aardsma, sorta like dropping a deuce.
@jerkstore: Can be better than Krispie and Hunter, but they’re more predictable. I wrote a post about him, search the site for projections.
*****Hanranhanannan’s out as closer.
Julian or Kip set to replace him.
April 28th, 2009 at 12:36 pm
@Grey: Can’t grab them both… am thinking Julian just because I can’t wrap my brain around Kip Wells closing. I have Hawkins and Valverde, Madson, Juan Cruz, Downs, Percival, Sherrill. I am thinking Madson or Cruz for Julian?
@NoonTime: Lose Cruz for Julian.
************
Downs, Madson, Hawkins, Julian, Cruz, Wells — MR list.
April 28th, 2009 at 12:42 pm
Or grab Beimel with an open DL spot, no?
April 28th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
I want to reactivate the Hoff, who do I drop? (bear in mind this is a 16-team holds league)
Tony Pena, Jason Frasor, Derek Holland, Jeremy Guthrie, Randy Johnson, Brad Penny
I’m not in a hurry though. I was thinking of waiting for a couple more outings and see what he’s got. If in the meantime the Big Unit, Guthrie or Penny are still garbage I’ll probably dump one of them. Thoughts?
April 28th, 2009 at 12:45 pm
I’m thinking somewhere among all my adding/dropping closers or potential closers I dropped one thats gonna end up with 35 saves.
Didn’t stop me from adding Tavarez though!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@JR: If you have an open DL spot, sure.
@DrEasy: Dump Penny after a few outings.
@BigFatHippo: Ha! Seriously.
April 28th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
@sean: Oswalt is a year away from being a farmer….. even he took his signs of deterioration seriously last year.
April 28th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
I just dumped morgan for fowler. did I make the right call?
April 28th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
Thanks Grey!
Here’s another puzzler: my middle infield is positively barfstipating with Brandon Phillips, Mike Aviles and Ben Zobrist (yes, him). The FA situation is no better, we have the likes of:
Bonifacio, Burris (whom I dumped to get Zobrist in the first place), Brendan Harris, Joe Thurston, Maicer Izturis, Nick Green, Ronnie Belliard, Jeff Keppinger, Geoff Blum, Alberto Gonzalez (who?), Anderson Hernandez (is Yahoo just using a random baseball name generator?)
Is it worth dumping Zobrist for any of the dregs above? Should I just punt Zobrist, leave the position open and get a middle reliever?
April 28th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
I get Lowe/K-Rod for Inge/Qualls. Pull the trigger?
Current rotation: Vazquez, Harden, Liriano, Weaver, Slowey.
Soto steps in at C for Inge.
@DrEasy: Barfstipating — ha! Get Bonifacio or Burriss, you can always you speed, unless you’re not playing them, then grab a MR.
@Eric H.: Do it.
@rak: Yeah, I think that move’s fine. They’re pretty similar, but Fowler has more upside.
April 28th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
@Grey: Thanks! I forgot to say OPS is also a category, so GoodFace and Webster would be hurting me more than in a usual 5×5.
April 28th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
Do you like Danks for my Hunter or Abreu ?
April 28th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
Hey Grey…i can afford to make a move…to pick up either Kip Wells or Tavarez…
im thinking julian, but what do you think?
I would be dropping Brian Tallet (whos been decent in filling in for litsch…good move?
@Nick: Yeah, that’s solid.
@PJTres: I just ordered them above. Yes, Julian.
April 28th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
So pick up Tavarez for now, and then Beimel later? Or Beimel now and wait for him to get back from the DL?
@royce!: Beimel if you have room on the DL, Tavarez right now either way.
April 28th, 2009 at 2:12 pm
@Grey: are you dropping hanrahannnaran?for a taveraz
@AL KOHOLIC: Yeah, I am where I don’t have room.
April 28th, 2009 at 2:25 pm
@Grey: thanks,auction league,bought hanrahaann,lindstrom,hoff,ryan and motte,didnt pay big for any but thought i had saves set,ha cornholed again
April 28th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
drop Wood for Tavarez?
April 28th, 2009 at 2:27 pm
@AL KOHOLIC: Never mind……………….
April 28th, 2009 at 2:27 pm
@Doc: Brandon Wood that is
@AL KOHOLIC: Ouch… Yeah, that hurts.
@Doc: Yup
April 28th, 2009 at 2:37 pm
Encarnacion to dl with bone chip in left wrist.
April 28th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
And in other injury news (Rotowire):
Hamilton is said to be in ‘extreme pain’ and unable to do much in the way in physical exertion. He expects rest – and not surgery – to be able to fix the problem. Look for him to hit the DL soon.
Play Peralta vs. Penny tonight, or play no one in his spot?
Drop Peralta or Corpas to pick up a replacement OF for Hamilton?
April 28th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
Start P. Hughes tonight or wait and see?
April 28th, 2009 at 2:47 pm
Should I drop Hanrahan?..any chance he regains closer job? Also since Hawpe is injured I need OF help. So drop Hanrahan for an OF or LaRoche for an OF Which scenario? and which of eligble player do i pick up? DeRosa, Morgan, Fowler, Ankiel, J Upton, Span, Matsui, Coco Crisp
thanks in advance
@Prince: Yeah, bad news for Hamliton owners, glad I don’t have him anywhere. Play Peralta tonight, then drop him for a replacement.
@Doc: Thanks for the update on EE. I’m rolling the dice on Hughes tonight.
@G: Drop Hanrahannanan for Fowler if you need speed, Ankiel if you need power.
April 28th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
@Prince: Thanks Grey. Who should I add @OF? Upton, Dukes, Conor J, Fowler, Teahen, Spills are all FAs… I need R and BA most.
April 28th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
@Prince: @Grey: Wait wait wait – Drop Peralta? I don’t own him, but that seems a little rash. The guy was terrible last April too, but came back around – check his splits. Who becomes your SS?
SS isnt exactly a stacked position – can you pull a trade?
April 28th, 2009 at 3:08 pm
Nevermind, he wasn’t THIS bad. I just went through all the splits. Average is on par, but power is way down.
@Prince: Jackson
@Falcon: I don’t agree with dropping Peralta, but if Peralta’s not playing, seems like a shallow league. You’re right though, probably should be trading him.
April 28th, 2009 at 3:21 pm
@Grey: @Falcon: Yeah it is shallow (10-team), with VERY little trading. Peralta was sitting as a FA for days before I picked him up. Oh, Hanley is my SS, Alexei @MI.
Other teams-
SSs: Tejada, Reyes, Theriot, Hardy, O-cab, Tulo, As-cab, Barmes
MI: Bartlett, Hudson, Roberts, Hill, Uggla, Andrus, Polanco, Lopez
My first year at this, so I don’t know all these names. I’ll have to see how they’re doing, and who might be most droppable by their owner.
@Prince: Yeah, that’s what I figured. You’re going to have a hard time trading Peralta in that league. Can try and move him to one of those teams for a small piece, maybe a junky closer, but not sure you’re going to get much.
April 28th, 2009 at 3:27 pm
@Grey: Grey, I don’t think I can handle another low BA (and it’s only for 2 weeks presumably, so I’m not waiting for him to heat up), so Jackson might not be the best. Which would be your second choice? Upton, Dukes, Conor J, Fowler, Teahen
@Prince: Conor Jackson’s a good BA option, you’re having him on your team going forward, not backwards. Otherwise, try Fowler.
April 28th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
Is Hanrahan ever getting his job back or we shouldnt count on it?
April 28th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
kelly shoppach or john baker?
@G: I wouldn’t count on it. If so, won’t be for a little while.
@Martin: Baker
April 28th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
Jeez – the Reds-Astros game is a shocker for me. I have both Wandy and Harang – but in different leagues.
And I have Votto in all three leagues…
@Steve: As with many pitchers, Wandy seems to struggle out of the gate…. Hopefully, he settles down.
April 28th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
@Grey: From here on out, I’m hoping for a K-fest with perhaps a save for Hawkins
April 28th, 2009 at 4:53 pm
@Steve: That would be a win for me and a loss for you, hehe.
April 28th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
Would you do Corpas/Fields for Andrus/Sherrill? I think I can acquire Ray in a deal and then I’d have the Balt closer situation locked up
@cubbies299: It’s a needs trade. It’s fair on both sides. If you need what your side is getting it’s fine.
April 28th, 2009 at 5:17 pm
@Grey: I’m probably jinxing ‘em both, but the boys seem to be rolling now…
April 28th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
@Grey: I’m short on saves and grabbed Beimel and Tavarez. Do you think Beimel is a strong bet to be “the guy” when he comes off the DL? If so, does it make sense to drop Tavarez and grab Phil Hughes or Dexter Fowler? I’m strong in the OF, so I’d prefer to grab Hughes. Thoughts?
@Eric H.: Lose Taveras for Hughes.
April 28th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
hammels out again,ankle injury,damn
April 28th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
@Grey: @Steve: Uh-oh.
April 28th, 2009 at 5:42 pm
Hole Camels twists his hamel toe
@Doc: @AL KOHOLIC: Definitely cursed this year.
*********Jose Valverde to the DL
April 28th, 2009 at 5:55 pm
With Valverde down, Hawkins or Tavarez?
@Doc: Hawkins
April 28th, 2009 at 6:56 pm
Someone please…please tell me how the F does Bush almost no hit arguably the best offense in the league in their sandbox park and then comes home and gives up hits and runs to losers like the Pirates? I LOVE FANTASY BASEBALL!!!
April 28th, 2009 at 7:19 pm
Looks like Hughes pitched a good game. Did anyone see it?
Thanks Grey, I decided to start him in the RCL with your rolling the dice endorsement.
April 28th, 2009 at 8:27 pm
@Grey: So I got Danks for my Abreu. Unfortunately his outing tonight is going terrible. Hopefully this is not bad news, he is playing KC which scares me
April 28th, 2009 at 8:36 pm
*Went terrible. Games over.
@Colin: Ha!
@Nick: Yeah, wasn’t pretty, but they can’t all be.
April 28th, 2009 at 10:16 pm
F U Broxton! Just cost Me & Bills a W
