Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Jose Tabata, the Latin 21, one-time lauded Yankee prospect, was initially heralded as a power corner-OF but wrist issues have seem to have inspired Tabata to become the next Nyjer Morgan.  He’ll likely have a harder time outrunning MLB catcher throws than those in AAA.  And, much like his doughelganger ciabatta, the rest of his stats may be tough to swallow.  (BTW, does he realize that the B in SB stands for base, not baby?  Similar misconception for Kris Benson when he found out that SO stands for strikeouts and not slutty outfits.)  Tabata went 2-for-4 with a steal, leaving with a leg cramp.  He’ll be fine.  I’d grab him in all but the shallowest leagues for steals.  You could get some power.  What’s the worst that happens?  He goes 0-for-35 and steals your baby?  Big whoop!  Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

Brad Lincoln – 6 IP, 5 ER, 9 baserunners, 3 Ks.  The Nats were treated to another major league debut… Jose Tabata.  Oh, and Lincoln.  I just went over Brad Lincoln for fantasy.  After watching him, he didn’t change my mind about only grabbing him in NL-Only leagues.

Neil Walker – 2-for-5 and a steal, batting .327 in 55 ABs since his call-up while hitting in the 2-hole.  Speaking of two holes…

Aramis Ramirez – To the Disgraceful List.  March Grey is meeting with James Cameron to figure out a BP fix, but read what he had to say back then.

Geovany Soto – 2-for-4 with 2 homers.  It’s why you Ron Popeil your catchers and “Set it and forget it.”

Marlon Byrd – 2-for-5 and 2 homers to give him 9 on the year.  Hey, career year, what’s going on?  Say hello to your mother for me!

Randy Wolf – 4 2/3 IP, 8 ER and gave up 5 homers.  Wolfman jacked!  I figured he’d fall back to earth hard after last year, but I didn’t even think it would be this bad.

Nate McLouth – Collided with Jason Heyward in a sickening McOuch.  Sickening for Heyward owners.  Heyward’s fine.  McLousy could be out for a while.

John Ely – Torre said he wanted to start “taking care of Ely.”  So he’s skipping his next turn so Ely can face the Red Sox next in Fenway.  Thanks, Torre!

Jake Arrieta – As frequent commenter, 3FingersBrown, said in the comments, “Arrieta makes his debut (today) against the Yanks because that’s a great lineup for a young pitcher to gain confidence against in his first big league start.  It’s as though they watched Strasburg and said, “That worked out great!  Let’s do the opposite.”  He doesn’t even have Shutdown Sauce to back him up, so at best he’ll get to see a great start blown by the bullpen.  Sad, silly team there in Charm City.”  Stephen broke down Jake Arrieta for fantasy.  Outside of AL-Only or keeper leagues, I wouldn’t go near him.  Forget those O’s pitchers, bad division, terrible team.

Ryan Ludwick – Hit his 10th homer.  Guess he’s only good every other year.  We will call him, Ludwick Van Evenyears.

David Price – 6 IP, 1 ER, 9 baserunners, 4 Ks.  Wasn’t the prettiest of wins for Price.  Was the kinda wins that make me think his ERA might catch up to his FIP.  But right now I’m kicking myself in the no-no area for labeling him a sleeper in the preseason and then not drafting him anywhere.  Damn, this was my year to get him too, because you know next year’s he’s gonna be… Wait for it… Here it comes… Hmm… I thought it was here… Did I leave it in the car?… Oh, no, it’s here.  He’ll be overrated.

Carlos Pena – And another homer.  Yeah, gonna have to up the over/under homer total for June to 10.

Delmon Young – 1-for-4 with his 2nd homer in 3 games.  I could see him being a post-hype sleeper next year.  Never know, he might string a streak together right now.

Justin Masterson – 9 IP, 0 ER, 4 baserunners, 6 Ks vs. the Red Sawx, a team no one in their right mind would start him against.  It’s a snide remark under his breath, it’s pretending to not see you… No, it’s Justin Masterson:  The Passive Aggressive Fantasy Starter.

Felipe Paulino – 8 IP, 2 ER, 10 baserunners, 7 Ks.  Has actually been a very serviceable deep league option.  No chance for wins and a bit too wild for straight roto mixed leagues, but I’d grab him in H2H leagues if he had the right matchup.  And that’s me sorta, kinda endorsing him!

Sean Rodriguez – 3-for-4, 3 RBIs and hitting around .330 over the last week and a nine game hitting streak.  Currently, hitting everyone but he has a .344 average vs. lefties and a .203 average vs. righties.  Was a favorite of mine coming into the year.  Right now, he looks startable, but could be a platoon guy.

Shaun Marcum – 4 IP, 7 ER, 11 baserunners, 3 Ks.  You get through the Red Sawx and the Yankees and then you have to deal with the Rays.  This is the biggest problem I have with AL East pitchers.  There’s no let up– Oh, Marcum gets the Padres and Giants next.  Yes, please!

Brennan Boesch – 2-for-3 and his 2nd homer in a row.  Or as he tells himself in the mirror every morning, “You are Boesch-a-boom-boom!”  Now batting near .500 over his last 7 games.

Alexei Ramirez – Hit his 6th homer.  As he’s wont to do, he’s getting hot with the weather.  Yes, wont.

Ryan Hanigan – Progressing well from his fractured thumb, still life goes on with Corky Miller.

Drew Stubbs – 2-for-4 with his 7th homer and 2 Ks.  He hits for power, has blazing speed, but strikes out like a madman.  That’s the Stubbs rub.

Aaron Harang – 7 IP, 2 ER, 8 baserunners, 3 Ks.  He’ll be in this afternoon’s post about starters who should be much better.  So postdate my ‘I told you so.’

Adam Jones – 1-for-3 with a steal.  That makes me even happier than his homer the other day.  Now at least he’s giving value besides the occasional homer.  Git r dun, Pacman!

Nick Markakis – 2-for-5, 0 Runs and 0 RBIs.  Now hitting .293 with 3 homers and 1 steal on the year.  Has there ever been a more yawnstipating three hole hitter?  I know Sparkakis, and you, sir, are not him.  Turn in your codpiece.

Jayson Werth – Before the game was postponed, Werth was out of the lineup again in favor of Ben Francisco.  Maybe Charlie Manuel and Jayson Werth can resolve their differences.  Or Jayson could hit him in the back with a folding chair, jump from the top of his locker and drop the elbow!

Buster Posey – Hit his first home run.  It was a moon shot too.  Eli Whiteside bartered with the fan to get the ball back.  “What, you don’t like garlic fries?  I’ll send you some lox from my guy in New York.  Be a mensch…. Buster’s mishpocheh.”

Grey, I have Jonathan Sanchez on my pitching staff, and aside from his his historically high K’s, he’s not doing well this season. And we all know that a lot of it has to do with very little run support. So, I am thinking about dropping him for another pitcher with a better supporting cast and so on. Good idea, bad? What’s your advice/thoughts on the following available pitchers?:

    Ervin Santana
    Jeff Niemann
    Chad Billingsley
    Jon Garland

Statistically so far, Niemann looks to be the best choice and is pitching for the, if not erratic, best team in baseball. But what do you think? Should I drop Sanchez for one of them? Right now I have Halladay, Price, Kershaw, J. Sanchez, Pelfrey, Valverde and Marmol. Aside from Sanchez, my win totals have me also wondering if Pelfrey is the best choice considering the guys I listed above that are available in FA in my 8 person league. I would try and trade Sanchez if I did go ahead and drop him, but the other guys in the league are loaded and trading just doesn’t happen. Sanchez has those K’s at years end, but if the Giants are rarely going to give him runs then it only hurts to lose the win. Thx, Grey.

  2. Terrence Mann says:

I don’t care what you say about Harang later today, Grey. I’m not adding him. He hardly strikes anybody out. Plus, when he pitches in the heat I’m pretty sure he sweats gravy. I don’t care if Dusty puts a blond wig on him and starts trotting him out in the ninth to close his own games. I’m not adding him.

    heh, wolfman jacked.

brennan boesch is a lefty, who in the 22 ABs he’s had against lefties this year, has 3 doubles, 3 triples, and 2 homers, and a tidy 1.882 OPS.

Ah, the Wolfman. It never gets old. Though it’s only when he hits one himself that the fun really starts.

12-team 5 x 5 roto, been offered A-Rod, Pierre and Al-Ram for Wright and Reyes. I’m in second overall but Steals and Average are my two weakest categories. I’m thinking it’s probably a no. What say y’all?

  6. Hi Grey — With SD still in contention in June (whodda guessed?) do you think Heath will be traded at the deadline? And if he is, who is most likely to inherit the closer role? Adams? Gregerson?

Can you name any other low-profile middle relievers who may be worth targeting on the chance that they could inherit the closer role at the trade deadline or because of injury?

I’m in contention in a 20-team league where I’m in decent shape saves-wise because I have two closers — Gregg and Fuentes — but that may be the worst one-two punch available. And saves are so scarce that nobody is willing to trade a closer. I need to roll the dice on the next Axford; I’d even settle for the next Simon.

@ViagraFalls: NEVER chase Ws. get good K guys, good era/whip guys, and let the Ws fall where they may. sanchez is giving you great Ks, a sub-3.00 era, and a 1.15 whip.

that’s 3 plus cats right there. whether the giants score enough runs is another story. they’ve managed to score enough for lincecum the to win 33 games the last two years with similar numbers to what sanchez has right now this year, and matt cain to win 14 last year with similar numbers.

if you start adding/dropping pitchers based on things completely out of there control (like how the lineup hits behind them) you are setting yourself up for fail.

Grey, I asked your opinion on a deal yesterday where I’d get Cliff Lee and Haren for my Granderson and Kennedy. You said I didn’t need the pitching (as a reminder, my outfielders are Granderson, Upton, Bruce, Hart, Quentin, Stanton — we start 3 OF + 1 util spot, so I have to bench 2 of them on most nights — and my SP staff is Lincecum, Johan Santana, Josh Johnson, Weaver, Nolasco, Kennedy, Cueto). I posted another comment later, I don’t know if you saw it… I said that I could get Hamilton or Holliday straight up for my Weaver from another guy.

Do you like the Cliff Lee trade better for me knowing that if I do both trades, overall I’d get Holliday (OR Hamilton) + Cliff Lee + Haren for my Granderson + Weaver + Kennedy?

  16. ThePoonTycoon says:
    (link)

@Vince: do those deals asap. and get holliday.

even without picking up the bat you don’t “need” the pitching, but granderson isn’t doing shit anyway. you’d get a significant talent/potential upgrade which always bodes well, especially when you still have 2 months to work out other deals to deal away your excess pitching near the trading deadline once some contenders have their SPs fall back to earth or end up injured.

Rostering Adam Jones is complete torture. I want to drop him so badly, but he keeps giving you these teases & know he’s starting to run. Maybe it’s the new manager.

I’m a little worried about Price. My pitching staff has been exceptional this year (Johnson, Price, Liriano, J. Garcia, Marcum, E. Santana, Bills) but I can’t help but feel I’m asking for trouble when some of these guys come back to earth. I’m looking at offering maybe Price + Garcia for a good a top SP. Anyone come to mind who I could target? Or maybe just trade Price?

Just an observation. Is there a more yawnstipating 1st Rd pick than A-Rod this year. I’m not disappointed & he’s is still achieving what I consider to be his floor numbers, but damn that’s boring and he isn’t even trying to steal yet. I know others have played worse, but more yawnstipating? I don’t think so.

@barker: Not sure that’s a good deal for you. Shields has been pretty good so far this year, and Montero is due back soon.

Victor Martinez would probably be a slight upgrade, but is it worth the headaches Zambrano will give you?

  29. Hi everyone. Right now my OF in a 20-team league includes Brett Gardner, Rasmus, Carlos Lee, Quentin. I was looking to upgrade by packaging one of these guys with an extra middle infielder or 4th or 5th starter. In terms of under-performing OF to target there’s Lind and Hawpe … also a team with six decent OF might trade Kubel. Are all three an upgrade from, say, Quentin? Any other names I might consider targeting?

@Poon; @Grey; @Anyone: 8 Team H2H Keeper (it’s relegated as we keep 5 – 3 bats/2 pitchers or 2 bats/3 pitchers). Current lineup: V-Mart, Glaus, Utley, Longo, Andrus, Kemp, B-Up, CarGo, Stanton, Rasmus, Berkman, Wright, and Cruz set to come off the big friggin’ baby list, Doc, JJ, Ubaldo, Shields, Ervin, Weaver, Verlander, Crapps, Aardsma, K-Rod, Axford, DLR-DL.

I fell victim to the limp off homerun, and being that it was an 8 Teamer, promptly snagged Glaus off the waiver wire. While I love what he’s doing right now, I wouldn’t mind having a decent backup 1B for if/when he falls back to earth. A few teams have a plethora of 1Bs that I’ve been attempting to trade with, to no avail. One guy was considering Shields for Pena, but then backed out after Pena hit his 3rd in 2 games last night. Another guy said he would want Wright for Votto (he also has King Al), which I’m considering, but not sure I would want to do it as I don’t know if that really makes me any better.

I swear there’s a question in here somewhere…oh wait…here it is: the guy with Pena also has A-Gon, Morneau, Youk that he can plug in at 1st. Being that I have a boat load of good OFs, would anyone offer CarGo and Rasmus for A-Gon, and is this a fair trade? Or would anyone offer CarGo for Pena? I can pretty much afford to lose CarGo, but I’m thinking that would be overpaying in the Pena department. And what are some opinions on Wright for Votto?

    Thank you, sirs…

Just wanted to brag about my good fortune in whats been a pretty terrible year. My girlfriend likes baseball and occasionally checks my fantasy team when I have to work. I had told her in the past that if I left any starters on the bench who had a start that day she should switch them in. I picked up Masterson this week and had him on the bench for this start and forgot to tell her to leave him alone. She had switched him in right before game time, and I get a 2 hit shutout for it.

@Wilsonian: not big on wright/votto. i think value is pretty even, but it’s kinda a toss up at best.

i would do cargo/rasmus for any of gonzo, youk, morneau. just tell him you can pair those 2 for whichever of the 3 he’s ok trading.

i would feel ok subbing upton for cargo and/or stanton for rasmus if the guy preferred.

you are almost assuredly keeping longo, wright, kemp anyway, so stanton is unlikely to out do those guys this year so no need to consider keeper ramifications, might as well use him as bait.

You could use that also add that to the glossary to describe any ball player who resembles Hamburgler Butler or CC. I didn’t know about the stolen bebe! That shit’s hysterical!

LOL Werth definitely = Edge. I’m waiting for him to bust out a figure-four on someone (I don’t remember Edge’s finisher).

@ThePoonTycoon: I was kind of taking your stance on the Wright/Votto deal. I don’t think it really makes my team any better, and with Glaus playing out of his mind, I don’t NEED to make that deal.

I did have a verbal offer (from my dad, nonetheless) of Howard, McGehee and Bay/Hunter for Utley and Wright. But I don’t like McGehee all that much. So I don’t think that offer is going anywhere (he hates the Mets, and doesn’t view Wright as a keeper) as he wouldn’t do just Wright for Howard, which I would consider and most likely do.

I think I’ll make one of those offers for Gonzo and let him know he can have his pick. Thanks for the advice.

I would also say that those keepers are probably the ones I would have, unless Utley removes his head from his rectum. But, he is 32 and Wright is much younger.

    Andres Torres
    Seth Smith

I also have Fred Lewis and Luke Scott platooning my OF. Would you drop either of them for any of the above listed?

@Grey: I heard a rumor, in addition to the inning cap, that the Nats were also going to skip some of The Stryborgs away starts now and again to give more starts at home (and more gate revenue). You heard that at all? That could drive H2H managers crazy.

  62. @Grey: It’s not worth spelling out who is on waivers, obviously, but in a followup to my earlier Q, I’m just looking for the names of some less-than-obvious guys who may be in lines for saves by the end of the year, because the current closer gets traded or hurt. Does anyone come to mind?

The best deal on the table is trading A-Rod FOR Tex & Figgins. Of course, I don’t want to trade A-Rod if I can help it.

Instead, what about trading Lincecum FOR Liriano & Glaus?

  64. Montero on target to return this weekend. Posey’s been the fill in. Will Montero have a better second half? Might Posey be a better than servicable 1B/3b & spot Montero off days? OR, in trade, could either return a Berkman or a Donkeycorn Closer?

    Grey,
In regards to the aforementioned Werth, Lind, Santana for Fielder, Markakis, and Sandoval deal… any other combinations you see as a fit?

    Here is my team:
    C- Napoli
    1B-LaRoche
    2B- Pedroia
    SS- Escobar
    3B- Youkilis
    OF- Werth
    OF- Rios
    OF- Lind
    UT- Hart
    UT- Damon
    BN- Smoak, I. Stewart, Headley,
    DL- Beltran, Bartlett

    SP- J. Santana
    SP- A. Wainwright
    RP-J. Broxton
    RP-M. Rivera
    P-H. Bell
    P- G. Floyd
    P- D. Haren
    P- Y. Gallardo
    P-M. Latos
    P- Slowey

    His Team:
    C-Martin
    1B-Fielder
    2B-Aviles
    3b-Sandoval
    SS-Andrus
    OF-Dunn
    OF-Crawford
    OF-Markakis
    UT-Branyan
    UT-C. Guillen
    BN-Ibanez, N. Morgan

    SP-Fausto Carmona
    Oswalt
    Ely
    Bonderman
    Vargas
    Harden
    Peavy
    Guthrie

    RP-
    K-Rod
    Jenks
    Bailey

The guy is in last by a long shot (H2H, 12 Teams.) He only has 3 legit keepers at this point.. Fielder, Crawford, and likely Sandoval. He’s looking for 2 keepers in return for Fielder. I don’t think Santana is necessarily a sure keeper.. but I believe I can convince this guy that he is. And Santana would be his best pitcher.

Just not sure the best route to go here.

Speaking of the Strasburg game the other night, anyone else see that moron Nats fan throw the Young HR ball back? Guy should have just taken 10k or so and thrown it on the field. Imagine the collectors who’d want the “First HR given up” ball from Strasburg wouldn’t be on the light side.

Never got the whole “throw it back” concept. I go to about 20 Rays games a year and still have yet to snag a foul or HR.

  71. Best reply to a trade offer that I’ve sent… Swish and Jaime for Verlander

I can’t count how many games I’ve been to and I’ve never gotten a ball. Few close calls, including a bigger kid snatching a ball that Straw explicitly threw my way, after my incessant pre-game nagging. Fucker. The kid, not Straw that is.

.61 HR/9 @ home, 1.23 HR/9 on road so far. I don’t expect such a wide difference to hold. He’ll probably end up with a number around 1 overall.

i threw Helton in the offer to crapify/entice. would drop him if it goes thru for someone like Tabata or Delmon. this is a 14t roto keeper w OBP, so Swish and Smoak are rated slightly better than standard.

i’m wavering bc of Coghlan — now that he’s starting to rake, i like him again. he could be nice the rest of the way. think this deal is pretty fair?

  97. Fanthead says:

It worries me to make a trade without consulting first with his Grey Eminence. I kid you not. Furthermore, the player I acquired, Alex Rios, is not beloved by his Grey Eminence. That said, I thought I had okay pitching even without Jaime Garcia so I traded him for Alex Rios (because I was lacking in OF depth).

But mine is a long-term league. Will I be haunted by giving up Garcia for Rios or has Rios truly elevated his game?

Which sparks another question, one with more universality to the readers of this site: What players in the last few years, Grey, did you think you initially misjudged? Obviously we all read you because 1. you are funny and 2. have great baseball insight. But even funny know-it-alls make mistakes, right? If that’s true, which, if any, of your Razzball judgments have kind of haunted you?

  100. @Jangles: As one of the Flushing faithful, who follows the Mets religiously, I don’t think so. Word out of Metland is that Pagan’s been forgiven for his brainfreezes from last year and that they’re very high on him. If/when Beltran comes back (which probably won’t be until well after the break) I can see Pagan losing some at-bats here and there, but I expect Frenchy to lose more playing time. I’ve read talk about Beltran to right and Pagan staying in center.

Of course this is the Mets, so they may just let the outfielders draw straws or play russian roulette.

    @Grey: @Everyone

I’m in a bit of dilemma and I want some sound advice.

In my league, we started the year with the commish (me) being the final say in trades. In the humblest way possible, I have the most knowledge in that league. I can easily see when a trade is far, if it’s lopsided, how it’ll help one’s team, etc. You could say I analyze everything beyond what the two trading managers do. Last month, a lopsided trade went through where I knew I should veto, but both managers consented. So I couldn’t say no, and I accepted it. I caught heat for it but oh well. The following day I put league-wide veto and that’s how it has remained to this date. 3 managers have voiced their disapproval of this setting but I thought it was fair and it took a huge load off my shoulders. In the month that we’ve had it, exactly what I feared would happen, happened. Alliances formed. Now any trade can get vetoed. This reached a breaking point last night where one manager lashed out after his trades were vetoed, and all of a sudden 3 of the pending trades were all vetoed.

My question: Should I keep it league-wide veto and know anything has a chance to get vetoed (fair or unfair) simply to spite the “other side of the league”? Or should I return to being the final say, but this time step in even if both managers consent and I think it’s unfair?

Any advice is greatly appreciated. his is my first time being commissioner and I want to get it right now to start fresh next season.

  108. @tHe ShiT: Thanks!

Bumgarner watch begins… now! FWIW, I don’t think he’ll have a huge impact – he walks too many and doesn’t K enough, although AT&T and good SF D will help.

@Doot Doot: Hellickson’s been a beast this season but they’ll give Wade enough rope to hang himself. Don’t be shocked to see Hellickson be called up to solidify the pen down the stretch, like Price was in ’08.

    @Eddy:
    My advice:

    1. Take the power back. 2. Come up with a well-defined standard by which you will veto trades. (Personally I let everything go through unless it’s obvious one guy has given up on the year and is trying to help another team without helping his own) 3. Post whatever you come up with to the league. 4. Stick to it.

    @everyone

I have Olivo with Montero coming off the DL soon. Need an upgrade at 2B/SS. Should I trade Olivo or Montero for Zobrist?

  113. @Eddy: Agree with Grey. People should be able to make retarded trades, it happens all the time in the real game. If there’s an obvious case of collusion (in a money league) than I might ask questions, but I’ve never seen that. We’ve had numerous trade disputes in my keeper league, but in the end the deals have always held and they ultimately didn’t look that bad.

Some of the worst trades have been the ones people said were kosher at the time.

  114. Kazmere says:

@The Dude: I’ll roll with you then. And if Oswalt bombs, we owe Grey a daquiri. Deal?

  115. The Dude says:
    (link)

@Eddy: no trade should be vetoed – if 2 managers come to an agreement it should go through. If there are idiots foolish enough to trade Cory Hart and Paul Konerko for Matt Kemp and Albert Pujols you need to find replacement managers…

But even so – that manager will learn his lesson for next time and life goes on…

The only exception is a case of collusion (i.e. “I’ll trade you Pujols and Kemp if you give me 25% of the league winnings). This sort of deal should not be allowed, but anything else is fair game.
