Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

The only thing more strained than Raul Ibanez’s patience for skeptics is his left groin as the Phillies placed him on the 15 day DL.  You don’t own Ibanez for his wheels so this isn’t as troubling as Jose Reyes with a bad hammy or Willy Taveras with an allergy to getting on base.  Stick him on the DL and hopefully he comes back in 15 days with an unstrained groin.  As for his Philly replacement John Mayberry Jr, think Rickie Sexson.  Lots of power but huge holes in his swing.  He might jack a few HRs before the league figures him out but we’d only recommend him for NL-only leagues and the power-desperate in deep mixed leagues.  Anyway, here’s what else we saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

Tommy Hanson – 6 IP, 0 ER.  With only two Ks vs. the Reds, it’s not as encouraging as it could be.  But I don’t believe we’re going to see the real Tommy Hanson this year anyway.  Not to say he won’t be good, just keep expectations in check.

Nate McLouth – HR yesterday and 4 RBIs.  Hopefully this big game can endear him to Braves fans enough so he gets his own racist chant.  I vote for swigging motions with Chumbawamba playing.

Jason Frasor – On today’s episode of As The Bullpen Turns, Frasor got the win in the 8th, Ryan started the ninth and Accardo finished it for the save.  After the game, Cito Gaston said, “Fantasy baseball players should consider themselves lucky I didn’t bring in Dirk Hayhurst to face one batter in the 9th.”  So what to make of the B.J. Frasordo closerousel… I’d pick up Frasor, Ryan then Accardo, in that order.  Frasor came into a pressure situation in the 8th.  There wouldn’t have been a save if not for him.  So there was no reason to save him for the ninth.  Ryan came in to start the ninth, but was a bit shaky.  Accardo was a fresh arm and got the save.

Jayson Werth – Hit his 10th homer on Tuesday, on Wednesday his 11th and yesterday he hit his… 12th!  C’mon, these are gimmes.

Adam Lind – Hit his 2nd homer of the Philly series as the flat-footed DH played outfield to get his bat in the lineup.  I wonder if anyone asked for his autograph in Philly by yelling, “Hey, Burrell!”

Ryan Madson – Gave up the winning run in the ninth.  In about a week, we’ll be able to do a find/replace with Lidge’s name.

Nick Blackburn – 9 IP, 1 ER.  I will see you, Mr. Blackburn, in this afternoon’s Buy/Sell.

Joe Mauer – Went 3-for-4 playing shortstop and wearing a Brendan Harris jersey.

Gavin Floyd – 7 IP, 1 ER, 7 baserunners and 2 Ks.  Strong start since he was struggling away from home.

Alexei Ramirez – Back-to-back games with a home run.  4 of 7 homers now in interleague.  Alexei likey when no one knows to throw him breaking pitches.

Derrek Lee – Hit his 8th homer yesterday.  Now batting around .335 for May/June combined.  Still nary a steal on the season.  You done drafted Lyle Overbay!

Geovany Soto – HR and steal yesterday (4th and 1st respectively).  Even if he gets to 15 homers this year, he’s still worth shopping around to see if he can bring in a better piece at a different position.

Carlos Gonzalez – HR yesterday.  Hasn’t shown much since his call-up and he’s not even playing regularly, but that could change as Rox start to get traded.

Craig Stammen – 6 1/3 IP, 0 ER.  Of course he blanked the Yanks.  In 9 games in Triple-A, he had a 7.33 ERA. Zoinks!

Ricky Nolasco – Probably sonavabenches across the board for Nolasco as he threw a one-hitter against the Sawx yesterday.  Before you start spraying the silly string that Nolasco’s back, it was a rain-shortened five inning game.

Ronnie Paulino - For those out there that change catchers like they should change their underwear, Paulino’s hot with 3 homers in two games.

Chris Davis – Hit his 13th homer yesterday as he went 1-for-4.  It’s bad when a 1-for-4 raises your average.  He now has 97 Ks on season.  Dave Kingman just shuddered.

Jose Valverde – Picked up the save.  Hawkins is now safe to drop.  Not during a trust exercise though, that wouldn’t be nice.

Luke Hochevar - 4 IP, 6 ER.  Hope he didn’t get you with the ol’ throw-a-great-game-then-a-terrible-game trick.

Krispie Young – 4-for-4, with a steal.  Unfortunately, he left the game with a leg injury.  I would’ve thought he sold his soul for more than one 4 hit game.  God knows Zobrist did.

Chad Qualls1 IP, 2 ER.  Final score, ARI 12, KC 5.  Kazaam!

Mark Reynolds12 runs and 16 hits for the Diamondbacks.  Reynolds went 0-for-6.  Ticker Tease!

Brandon Morrow – 4 IP, 2 ER, 6 Ks.  Last game he only went 3 innings.  Time before that he went 2 and a third innings.  Hello, five starts from now when he throws a complete game.

Franklin Gutierrez – 2 HRs for The Big FraGu!  Though still not worth anything outside of AL-Only leagues.

Adrian Gonzalez – 4-for-4, with a homer.  Someone didn’t get the memo about pitching around him.

Chris Young – After saying he would go to the DL, then saying he wouldn’t, it now looks like Young will hit the DL.  He takes as long to go to the DL as he does going home on a pitch.

Magglio Ordonez – Benched indefinitely by Leyland.  Are his teammates calling him Rey?  Maybe he caught BHD (Bobby Higginson Disease)…

Mel Hall – Received 45 years of prison time for out-perving former Yankee teammate, Luis Polonia.  Our hope is that ESPN doesn’t greenlight the early 90s sequel to The Bronx Is Burning.

I confess, Ho Che Var got me. In two leagues. Never again, I say, never again!

Dave Kingman – Donkey-Kong! The ultimate HAGNOF (Homers, Ain’t got no face). As one wag stated: “Kingman pushed the envelope of unidimensionality, exposing a yawning chasm between a single major strength, and completely hopeless weakness in every other aspect of his game.” But he sure could hit moon-shots, in the pre-‘roid days.

Wonder what Yankee family day was like with Hall and Polonia?

Bobby Higgenson disease – Ha! But Higgie declined due to lack of ‘roids, and Maggs to the results of detox. BTW, what exactly does one do with Ordonez? To highly rated to cut, no trade value, benched for an indefinate period of time. Help!

Is Morrow worth a pickup if available? By August, he should have enough innings to earn a win.

Do you know how badly Krispie is hurt?

Thanks, Grey. Morning routine – make coffee, feed cats, check my teams, visit Razzball. Check!

Mags is also being benched because if he starts 126 games or gets 600 something plate apperances the Tigers have to pick up his $18M option for next year. They may be looking to add payroll this year, but doubt they are wanting to keep Mags if he doesn’t have any power.

As a Jays fan, I’m sure Cito will use Frasor. He intended to bring him back out in the 9th, but didn’t realize Frasor was due up 1st the next inning. He was forced to pinch hit for him, which is why Ryan came out to start the 9th. Good ole Cito, up to his usual mistakes.

    Anybody:

I have an informal agreement for Shin Soo-Choo + one of the following pitchers: Slowey, Lester, Wandy Rod, Danks, Baker. Which pitcher should I choose? (I guess Lester should be the obvious choice). I’ll be trading away Victorino/Bedard. He also has Lily and Cain, although I feel like he’s less inclined to trade either.

I’m thinking he could be good today, if his stuff is as sharp as they say, against a team that hasn’t seen him.

You can keep your silly string in the can, but I’m not. How is 5 innings of 1-hit ball just ok? You make it sound like he pitched 5, gave up 6 hits and 3ER.

His total line was 5 IP, 1H, 1ER, 5Ks, 0BB. Who cares if it was rain-shortened? This performance by anyone else would have receive praise, not cautious pessimism.

  28. @Eric C.: Lester/Choo

    Pitching:

    SP
1.Roy Halladay 2. Jake Peavy 3.Yovani Gallardo 4. Erik Bedard 6. Adam Wainright 7. Tommy Hanson
    RP
    1. Heath Bell 2.Kevin Gregg 3. Houston Street 4. Trevor Hoffman 5. Andrew Bailey

So With Bedard Peavy and Halladay on the DL – I only have 3 starters

I’ve been talking with this one dude in my league – He propsed Bedard and Hoffman for his Inge, Nolasco, Young…I like Young to replace theriot so I got him to agree to Young for Hoffman straight up.

I told him I had some deals out to try and get a better catcher and if they fell through I’d do the Bedard/ Nolasco and Inge

    My questions are

    1) Would you do the 2nd part of the trade assuming I can’t get a better catcher?
NOTE: I know everyone is freaking over Bedards shoulder but I can’t imagine anything short of getting his arm cut off causing him to not pitch and get his next contract…even if he damages it he’ll just get his surgery next year on the dollar of his next employer
    2. If I should trade Bedard, is that really the best I can do? Should I be sticking it out with Martin and trying to get more for Bedard (he’s willing to do Nolasco and Porcello, who I’m not crazy about)
    3. Do you like the Young for Hoffman Straight up

@Fade: I think there is still reason to cautiously praise Nolasco’s start in Boston. As you note, he had no base runners. His problem so far this year has been to get flustered when someone has reached base (which, based on his over .400 BABIP until these last couple starts, was often). He would then make mistake pitches, and people would score (thus his LOB% being under 50 before the last couple starts, and his over 25% LD rate). So this last start didn’t really reveal much more than he can pitch great when no one is on. I would say the starts before that indicated more improvement because he had baserunners and stranded them at a normal rate (75%).

I definitely agree that all of his starts since he got back combined show that he should not be benched. And I am bummed that I benched him, but would have been much more bummed if I didn’t and he was crap, b/c that would have meant I was an idiot for even rostering him.

Not bummed that I pitched Blackburn though!

  42. Scott says:
    (link)

@Teef: I don’t remember anything in Bedard’s shitstory (history) that would suggest he can pitch effectively through pain, or is willing to try. He’s only 30, what if he’s thinking I get my shoulder cleared up this year, sign a one-year deal, then cash in when the economy is better? Who knows? I definitely like your side on the Young/Hoffman deal. I don’t really like Inge over Martin, but I am biased and would favor getting rid of Bedard.

My question is, if you drafted Cabrera, Upton, and A Rod in the first three rounds, when did you get CQ, Berkman, Hamilton, Martin, Halladay, and Peavy? Nice work!

  43. Thunder Dan says:
    (link)

I rolled the dice and started Nolasco at Fenway and the fantasy gods rewarded me for taking the risk. Should I double up and start Kawakami there today or quit while I’m ahead? I’m playing with house money at this point, and they say fortune favors the bold…

@Bob: I wouldn’t drop Bedard yet, especially not for Taylor, I mean Tommy Hanson.

  44. Scott says:
    (link)

    @Tony Y: That’s crap, I hate vetoes.

  45. @Scott: yeah i’m annoyed, i mean i kinda understand they’re looking at my staff in this DEEP 12 Team H2H league and its stacking them and they’re looking at my offense and its not hurting me one bit, but isn’t that the point of dealing? Making your team better? I posted my piece, the other guy posted his reasoning, but they’re still trying/attempting to veto because they say I’m not giving up enough or its throwing off the balance of the league! HA! My bad i have surplus at pitching and hitting!

I am a laissez faire capitalist regarding fantasy players, except in regards to my personal fav’s, which include Jobacum, Bruce, Sparkakis, Mariano Rivera, Pedro ( yeah, I’ll give him a whirl when he returns), and in the past, Lastings Milledge, my special Bowden Fluffer. They get more leeway then most. But the rest of them are indentured servants.

  49. Teef says:
    (link)

@ Scott – Most of my team is buy lows – I drafted Miggy, Arod, Holliday, Peavy in the first 4 picks…CQ grabbed in the 6th but Berkman, Hamilton, BJ were all buy lows (the last one i love cuz I traded Magglio straight up for him in his “hot streak”

Regarding Bedard: Even with his shoulder – if he comes off the DL makes a good start or two, I should be able to get much more than Nolasco for him – Just something in the idea of trading him for Nolasco bugs me..his numbers are too solid thus far.

  50. Fade says:
    (link)

@ royce!: I’m not saying that Nolasco is now a risk-less pitcher. My point is that Grey said not to celebrate because the game was rain shortened. The fact that the game was only 5 innings really has no impact on the performance. If it was a 9 inning game, and he pitched 5 inning of 1 hit ball, would he still downplay Nolasco’s start? Also, I wouldn’t say that Nolasco’s big problem was with men on base. His problem in the first place was putting them on base to begin with. I think by not allowing a walk and only one hit is just as much a positive step as would be otherwise.

@Grey: For next weeks lineup would u replace Slowey (vs. Mil or Stl), Wainwright (vs. Mets or Twins) or Danks (vs. Dodgers or Cubs) with Hoffman? My other closers starting are Franklin & Jenks and my opponent has K-rod & Wood in for nxt week. I don’t want to start Hoffman but rather him than one of the other starters if you have a hunch one of them might get lit up!

I have Chris Davis on the bench. I had to use him yesterday because Branyan was not playing. Should I hold Davis as a reserve?

@Simply Fred: seriously im going more on his track record and the fact that he is hitting the ball well of late, just not falling in,without doing the math or research i think he finishes up .250+ ,20+ good rbi`s for ss,wich means 275 and 15+ hrs from here on,i personally could use that in 2 leagues,

@AL KOHOLIC: In Yahoo, a Commish can remove the can’t cut stipulation – it is one of the options. However, the way it would be done is for the Commish to open the option, drop the player, and then close up so other can’t cut players aren’t allowed to be dropped. ( As a Commish in a Yahoo league where I own Peavy, the temptation is there to do just that! But I have promised to myself not to do so until it is certain that he will be out for the year. However, what could happen is that he may be projected to come back after the fantasy playoffs but before the end of the season. That would be a bummer.

@Simply Fred: I don’t know if matchups in general are important with a player who is streaky as Hardy. I think that Hardy would go 0-5 against Ponson in a slump, and 4-5 against, say CC Sabathia when going well.

  82. Paulie Allnuts

    Paulie Allnuts says:

@AL KOHOLIC: Even if he winds up relatively healthy, which is questionable at best, the Pod aren’t going to compete for anything, and would have no reason to risk pitching Peavy, either if they wish to keep him for next year, or trade him (although his value is substantially lower then it was several weeks ago.) . So I believe, like you do, that he will not offer any owner anything of value for the remainder of the year. But I will hold on to him until Grey or Rudy or Yahoo gives the word.

  83. Nick says:

@Paulie Allnuts: I’d say Grey gave the word to drop him. At least that is what he has reccommended I do!

sorry to repost this but I forgot to mention I might pickup Wolf if I can get the commish to remove the no cut list. So if I pickup Wolf we forget about Hoffman…so who do you put Wolf in for if any of them? Slowey, Danks, Wainwright?

  85. Grey

    Grey says:

@Nick: I’d start the starters. I wouldn’t start Wolf over any of those three.

  88. @IowaCubs: Nice. My doppleganger is a big boy – 6’6″ 270 lbs. Should be fun watching him field in the OF. If Gwynn Jr is in CF and Blanks in a corner, it’ll look like an evolution chain with Tony Gwynn Sr. and Nate Colbert in the middle…

“According to Baseball America, the Padres have promoted top hitting prospect Kyle Blanks from Triple-A Portland.
Blanks, 22, was hitting .283/.393/.485 with nine doubles, 12 home runs and 38 RBI for Portland. The 6’6″, 285 lb. slugger can play left field or first base. San Diego isn’t calling him up to sit on the bench, so there’s a strong chance he’ll gather some amount fantasy value. A corresponding move should be announced shortly.” –From Rotoworld….

I don’t think Blanks is going to be stellar this year. Playing the outfield will be atrocious for the Padres defense and will be like watching a catcher run the bases.

@AL KOHOLIC: @Paulie Allnuts: Thanks guys for responding. I was a property appraiser by profession (tax man), so numbers are the core of my analysis. I don’t have the “feel” for when a player gets hot, etc. That’s one of the reasons this site is so valuable. Nevertheless, it’s tough for me to set aside the numbers for opinion (even when it is spot on). I had considered making a move for Reynolds this week but didn’t like his matchups this week (thought he would under-perform) and could still make the move later. Everyone was touting how hot “the minny-donkey” is. In 3 games this week he has 1 single, 1 HR, 2 runs, and 2 rbi–considerably under-performing from recent “hot”. In any case, KNOW that I consider your knowledge and just gut instincts as worthy of LISTENING TO. Thank you!
