I’ve read seemingly compelling arguments against Mattingly’s inclusion from people who only factor in “contributions” (he was a major contributor for 4 seasons, not so much outside of that), but never one that factored in the other five areas. More to the point… if Don Mattingly doesn’t pass muster based on all six areas of evaluation, I don’t know of many players that do.

I’m leaning towards starting with tempered expectations.

He’s put up some nice MiLB numbers. That 18.4%/19.3% BB/K he posted in AAA last season gets me feeling a little gooey inside. Dude must be an absolute gimp in the field if the Royals have taken this long to give him a shot to play somewhere.

Even if it’s BJ Upton, it’s still a win for you, though you don’t need Beej and Crawford on the same team. You are not the Rays.

On a baseball field, then, what are your thoughts? I have Wigginton and have a chance to trade him for Floyd or Aramis.

@knighttown: I think he’s Haren tier. A-minus ace. Price may be joining him soon. I wouldn’t trade him straight up for Nolasco or Hamels. Lee and Haren, yes.

@Donnie Baseball: I wouldn’t rush to get Granderson while he’s out for a month…. I think Grandy ends up more valuable at year’s end than Jones, but I can’t ever suggest trading for an injured player. It’s like asking for what’s behind Door #3 when there might be only two doors.

Morneau’s a former MVP in the best RBI situation in baseball (i.e. behind Mauer). He is what he is if he stays healthy: .275/30-35/100-120 e.g. a very reliable 2nd-to-4th rounder year to year.

Morneau/Nolasco is also a fair deal, though I wouldn’t up the offer from that.

@Elijah: Stanton ’10 = Bruce ’08. Causing many an owner-boner, but not likely to live up to the hype. I love how this morning Yahoo! was touting his 500-foot homer… as if the distance of home runs hit in Double A are some indication of MLB readiness.

I can handle the month without stats, but if the numbers are going to be similar, what’s the point.
