Scott Olsen went 7 1/3 innings, giving up 1 ER and registering 8 Ks, while taking a no-hitter into the 8th inning.  Olsen, “Hello, Corner, I think I’m going to turn you.”  Corner, “Go for it.”  Looks like Olsen has been able to use his changeup more effectively this year and rely less on the fastball.  Olsen, “Fastball, you’re my woobie, I think I need to move on.”  Fastball, “But where were they going without ever knowing the way?”  Olsen, “Sorry, think I dialed the wrong Fastball.”  I get worried about putting faith in Nationals pitchers not named, That Kid In Triple-A, but I could see taking a flier on Olsen in 12 team mixed leagues and deeper.  At one time, Olsen wasn’t just some random Nats pitcher, he was a top Marlin prospect.  Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

Lance Berkman – Fat Elvis says he’d leave the building if the Astros wanted him to.  He’d agree to leave the Astros?  That’s just crazy.  Cray-zee.

Wandy Rodriguez – 3 2/3 IP, 5 ER, 10 baserunners, 4 Ks.  And the Wandwagon is back off the tracks.  Hopefully, it’s not back spasms.  He had three okay starts prior to this, so you gotta wait it out.  Well, you don’t have to, but that’s my suggestion.

Kelly Johnson – 2-for-4 as he hit his 10th homer.  Nothing says I love you like a Johnson going deep.  Hmm… Could’ve reworded that.

Dan Haren – 9 IP, 2 ER, 8 baserunners, 9 Ks.  I just thought of the perfect trade.  You trade Haren in July for Teixeira.  Am I right?  Or am I right-right?

Kila Ka’aihue – 1-for-1 with an RBI.  I know, you’re thinking he got 5 ABs and shot four BBs.  No, he pinch hit.  Here’s an idea, put Guillen in the outfield and sit the .118 batting, Dishonorable Willie Bloomquist, not that I’m judging.

Vladimir Guerrero – 2 HRs, 4 RBIs. I’m enjoying owning Vlad this season.  That is all.

Justin Smoak – 1-for-4, and his third homer.  Ignore the .196 average.  He has 8 walks and 9 Ks.  The Smoak will rise.

Julio Borbon – 0-for-4 as the Rangers scored 13.  Ticker tease!  Wait, actually, ticker season.

Randy Wells – 2 IP, 6 ER, 8 baserunners, 1 K.  After the game, the Fangraphs Database had this to say, “That’s payback for having a FIP higher than your ERA last year.  Muahahahaha…”  What an evil database.

Nate Schierholtz – 3-for-3, homer and a steal.  He won’t kill you on average, but he’s also not going to wow your socks off with his power or speed.  Decent roster filler for NL-Only leagues, but that’s about it as of right now.

Edgar Renteria – Headed to the 15-day DL.  Member the first week of the season when you wanted to add this schmohawk?  Ah, yeah, those were the days.

John Ely – 6 2/3 IP, 1 ER, 4 baserunners, 7 Ks.  Solid command and groundball stuff, though nothing really overpowering.  I’d look at him in NL-Only leagues for now.

Mike Napoli – Hit his first homer of the year.  After the game, Scioscia said, “Mathis would’ve hit two.”

Roy Halladay – 7 IP, 1 ER, 10 baserunners, 9 Ks and now has a 1.45 ERA and a 6-1 record.  But can he give birth to kittens?  Well?  Didn’t think so.

Raul Ibanez – Hit a homer and now has hits in 7 of 8 games.  Sure, he’s only had one hit in most of those games, but the glass half full here, c’mon.

Cameron Maybin – Sat yesterday and may not be long for everyday at-bats.  On high alert:  Mike Stanton.

Dana Eveland – 7 IP, 6 baserunners, 3 Ks.  Dana has 16 Ks and 17 walks on the year.  Ignore him (her?).

Gordon Beckham – 0-for-4 as he looks more like Gordon Shumway.

Alfredo Simon – Third save without allowing an earned run.  ‘fredo can handle things!  He’s smart!

Ty Wigginton – 2-for-4, and his 10th homer.  Can we get Adam Jones to use Wigginton’s bat?

Koji Uehara – He’ll be in this afternoon’s Buy/Sell.  How will I ever do without my Koji Uehara news?! Was that sarcastic, random italicized voice?  Yup.

Michael Saunders – In the wake of Milton Bradley’s case of the Mondays, Saunders was recalled.  He’s a poor man’s Big FraGu.  Some power, some speed, some AL-Only league fodder.

Eric Byrnes – Decided to hang up his dignity and join a recreational softball league.  I figured if anyone were to retire to a sport with beer in the dugout it would’ve been Miguel Cabrera.

can I drop Gordon Beckham yet? Dude’s playing like he’s Jeff Mathis (can do no wrong… yet does all wrong)

Ricky Romero is a Russian nesting doll and inside is the Blue Jays staff AND Scott Olsen!

Talk about a frustrating group of pitchers. I don’t know if these guys will throw a no-hitter into the eighth or get shelled and get pulled in the second. If I could pick and choose when they were gonna be on, they’d be the best fingercuffs in history. But seeing my utter lack of being able to predict such things, I can’t feasibly own any of them. Two questions.

    1) How does Olsen NOT play for Toronto?

    and

    2) Is there such thing as a Canadian nesting doll?

So when’s Mathis due back anyway? Traded away Doumit, Hill, Stewart (sorry man, this league counts poop like fielding % and other what nots and Stewart’s value isn’t that good), Chacin.. for Napoli, Kinsler, Figgins, Cecil.

Disclaimer: Napoli was added for Mauers backup and Cecil was added for Edwin Jackson….it was all a charade meanwhile knowing I was dropping Mauer’s backup and Crapson for Napoli and Cecil. Not to say Cecil is golden, but at this point I’d take myself (yes, Kent Bottenfield in 2010) over Edwin Crapson.

But enough about me, is Napoli a long-term solution or should I be prepared to deal with that bastard Mathis soon?

I also own beckham and I am dying to drop him for some roster space, but every time i think about it i realize that if i liked him a month ago, i should like him today, and that the terrible month hes had is in the past. he may turn it on for the rest of the season starting tomorrow. Think Tulo last year, who was actually benched for a while. Beckham started out terrible in 2009, so maybe there is some hope. I’ll hold him for another 2-3 weeks or so, and if he hasn’t done anything, then i will drop him. Thank God for David Freese who is saving my butt at 3b in the meanwhile.

I am keeping a REAL close eye on Travis Snider.
He is 11 for his last 25 (.440) with 4 doubles, 2 homers, 1 sb, and only 3 K’s. On the year, his average is up to .213 and rising quickly, with 4 hrs. And the most impressive part, is that he has 13 bb’s to only 20 k’s. He seems like he is finally figuring it out at the plate, and I expect him to only get better and better.

Since I play in a keeper league, I definitely do not want to miss out on this guy if he goes off.

Let me know what you guys think about him…

GREY, would you accept Slowey for BAY in a H2H league?

  30. Hi Grey — Love the Godfather reference. Third day in a row you made me shake my head and laugh out loud.

A few questions for my very deep 20-team league (sorry about asking so many at once … this is like studying theology: every answer makes me ask three more questions).

–Do you think Medlen is worth starting at Philly with Blanton on the mound? Or is it the kind of thing where you grab him ahead of time to beat the rush if he performs well? Looks like his next start is a lot easier, at home against Arizona and Cesar Valdez.

–Do you think Wandy is a buy-low candidate close to the same range as Kershaw and Beckett? Or is he in the Scott Baker tier? Or worse?

–Is it worth making low-ball offers on Kazmir or Vasquez? Or is it time to stick a fork in ‘em?

–Right now, 2B and 3B for me are manned by some combination of Wigginton, Jose Lopez, Eric Young, Brandon Wood, and Freese. Young and Wigginton are part of my trade efforts to land Beckett, Kershaw, or Baker, but is it worth making an offer for Aramis? I know you aren’t a huge fan of his, but if I got him for, say, Wiggy or Lopez, that would be good, no? Or maybe Freese? Is Freese a sell-high now or do you think he’s a keeper?

I know I packed a lot into one Q … thanks for all the advice!

    2009-108 PA
    .202/.224/.337, w with 2 HR allowed and a K:BB of 27:3 or 9:1

    You can now add 3 more PA, 0 H, O BB, 1 K.

If you’re in a league with holds, he’s perfect, as he slots in at SP.

I also have Cain, Hamels, Sanchez, Slowey, and Lilly. I really wish I had a nice high FIP pitcher to trade instead of all the underperforming highly drafted dudes. They have no value.

@joe from point pleasant: I have Snider in an AL-Only league and he really has been hot lately. His typical game has gone from 0-4 w/3 K’s, to 0-2 w/2-K’s and 2 BB, and now he’s not K’ing much at all. He’s starting to recognize pitches, I think he’s going to be more than solid from here on out.

@Arthur O: Brennan has a mangina! Sorry, I just love Step Brothers. Brennan had good power numbers in the minors, and he’s been batting in the 5 spot recently. Having said that, I think he’s an AL-Only guy at this point.

  53. Gallardo at Arizona seems like a must-start: 2-0 in 2 starts 0.00 ERA 10 K in 12 IP . . . as a ROOKIE, and he’s on a 3-game winning streak where he’s only allowed a single earned run in 18 IP with 25 K.

BUT, Diamondbacks at home can rake their own leaves as they’re 1st in SLG and OPS (.521 .885).

    Start with confidence or trepidation?

with david wright’s power return, where should he be valued?

i took him in the 2nd round, and i’ve been hammered with offers and guys scoffing when i tell them that he’s gonna cost them at least mid-1st round value. i mean last year he was a universal 1st round pick, and the only reason he dropped this year was his power concerns. with 7 HRs thus far, he’s answered the power questions and returned to his pre-2009 form. he’s not old and it’s not a fluke. .300+-100+-25+-100+-30+ is very reasonable realistic prediction of his output imo.

i told a guy it would take at least halladay + cano and he said halladay for wright straight up would be lopsided in my favor!?!

@Kent Bottenfield: RE: napoli…i’ve held him all year in 2 leagues. in week 2 or 3 i was gonna drop him and someone higher on the waiver wire kept grabbing the Cs i was interested in and it got down to i’d rather have an empty roster spot than a .200 avg. that said, napoli is batting around .400 the last 7 or 8 games, finally hit a bomb, and has about a month before mathis is ready. he should get to 350-400 ABs which is what you’d have expected before the season, his production should be there. and with mathis having a hand injury, it could linger making him a worse hitting and affecting his catching…

  59. William says:
    (link)

@ThePoonTycoon – it depends on needs right? In a straight up fantasy points format, it’d probably be Halladay over Wright… but in ROTO, it’s always based on needs.

Another way to look at it is this –
In weekly ROTO, pitchers never single handedly take over a week. Hitters can.

I can’t tell you how many teams I’ve faced where one hitter made a huge difference in the outcome. Wright looks like he can be that type of player since his power is back and he’s still stealing bases.

Then again, if your SPs are struggling, Halladay is guaranteed to give you videogame type numbers.

  60. Tony, good question on Morales. I am thinking the same thing. I have been riding this clunker for all he was worth…at least we got some saves out of him and not too much damage. I am trying to decide between Uehara and Corpas, both are available in my league…looks like Grey will be talking about Koji this afternoon.

@Kent Bottenfield: eh, not to get political, but “reasonable suspicion” basically means cops have a free reign and can make up whatever they want to justify their actions. that’s what people fear, this gray area where cops are gonna start hounding everyone with brown skin because they have brown skin. plus what creates a “reasonable suspicion” that one could be in the country illegally? the color of their skin? the language they speak? sure it’s intended to catch a truck full of mexicans crossing the border if they get pulled over for speeding, however, there is nothing in the law from a cop saying “hey, that dude was speaking spanish and looks ‘illegal’ so i have a reasonable suspicion to ask for his paper.” and adding in that “racial profiling” can’t be used…shit, that just means a cop will say “i thought i saw the outline of a gun in his waistband…oops i was wrong. oh well, might as well hassle him about his papers now.”

obviously shit needs to get done, but this isn’t the right answer.

/end political rambling, back to fantasy baseball.

And aside from my question about dropping the aging, injured Pettitte for Colby Lewis, what the hell should I do about the disaster that is Clayton Kershaw. He has all the talent in the world, but he is destroying my pitching averages.

My gut tells me to wait and little longer and ride him out through a couple more starts, but interested to hear what people think. Aside from being able to pick up Lewis to possibly replace Pettitte who may go on the DL, there isn’t much available in FA in my league. All the good ones are taken. And as far as trades go…the guys I know are not giving up their pitching talent without making a run at one of my supreme holds that I will not give up like Cano and Halladay.

I need to drop someone because Manny is coming off the DL tomorrow. It’s either Byrd or Headley or possibly Duchsherer since the A’s are just sitting him and thus screwing me by not putting him on the DL. I know Byrd is no household name but he is putting up numbers and his hitting anywhere from 2-5 in the lineup. I like Headley but his counting stats are limited due to his lineup and park although I do like the steals. Long story short would you drop Headley or Byrd?

@William: my staff is struggling, but i also have haren, beckett, kershaw, and slowey. haren didn’t get off to an amazing start, got knocked around once or twice, beckett is finally starting to come around, kershaw cannon-balled my ratios the other day, and i still expect slowey to be fine as a SP4/SP5 guy. so i don’t NEED halladay, despite how rough my pitching numbers are. i expect they’ll improve fairly dramatically over the next month or so.

and trading wright leaves me bumping stewart from 2B to 3B and weeks from util to 2B and pacman from bench to UTIL…so it significantly hurts my lineup imo and puts be in a bad spot when (if?!?!) weeks gets hurt or stewart goes colder than he already is or pacman never gets going.

  74. ThePoonTycoon says:

@Wilsonian: later prado. and if you don’t need kubel, later kubel. like someone said, snider is starting to “get it”. i owned him in multiple leagues and ended up dropping him when i needed the spot, but been following him, and i just picked him back up early this week in all leagues.

Niemann was on the xFIP list yesterday but looked real good last night (yes I know it was Seattle).
He’s actually been real solid in all his starts this year including impressive games against Boston and Toronto.
Any chance he can crack the top 40-50 starters for 2010?

Jhoulys Chacin, Wade LeBlanc, Scott Olsen or Edwin Jackson

Who’s preferable for next 2-3 years?

    Thanks.

  77. Tony says:
    (link)

@ThePoonTycoon: haha wow poon i get the same thing from other guys…. i drafted wright, i was a firm believer he’d bounce back, last year wasn’t that horrible, he did everything but hit for power….

I think people way overvalue halladay and Lince, ya they’re great, but i play H2H, they can dominate a week for you with my leagues 32 inning min, but then again they have their OFF GAME one week they screw you in an entire aspect of the game. Also in my league say you’ve got all your innings and throwing an SP on SAT doesn’t make any sense, all you can do is hurt your stats, you end up benching them! which is even more stupid….

i defly would not deal my wright for halladay or lince straight up.

I just read that Starlin Castro was called up and will play SS. Theriot will move to 2B. I have Castro on my roster as a cheap $1 auction player for next year if he pans out. I don’t have room for both – do I drop Theriot and take a chance?

  79. Commish Cauda says:
    (link)

@TJ: I have the same dilemma in my 16-team, H2H-POINTS league. But you can’t drop Beckham, so you have no choice but to dump Blanks. I wish Callaspo was a free agent in my league…I think I’d do that in a heartbeat.

I’d strongly suggest that the political discourse be dropped quickly.

@Timequake: maybe if you’re in a 8-team league. Bench him. Trade him for .80 on the dollar if you have to, but don’t drop him.

  82. Wilsonian says:
    (link)

@ThePoonTycoon: so you would drop both of those guys for Stanton and Snider? I have KJohnson at 2B (he stole the everyday job from Prado) and my OF has Hamilton (who looks like 2008 Hamilton right now), Torii and Headley in it. I’m thinking it’s probably a decent move to follow your advice. Much appreciated…you’re kind of becoming Grey, Jr.

  83. Commish Cauda says:
    (link)

@GTS: drop your worst back-end arm…don’t drop Theriot

  84. So is the most likely scenario with the Cubbies that Castro plays most days at SS, Theriot moves to 2B, and Fontenot loses a lot of at-bats?

Seems that that makes Castro an option when available, Theriot picks up some value vis a vis position flexibility, and Fontenot’s limited value takes a bit hit. Right?

  85. Is Starlin Castro even mildly interesting in a 12 team mixed league? Looking at his minor league numbers, I’m guessing he projects to something like a .260-.270 hitter with not much power and slightly better than average speed (22 SB’s in 350ish AB last year).

what should I expect from him the rest of the year grey

  88. Tony says:

@struggler: ugh, i have a roster spot open and had in a prospective waiver on castro already, but it won’t go through till sunday. i’m sitting 11/12 on the waiver list right now. i could really use a SS fill in for rollins…maybe he’ll go 0-for-8 over the weekend and owners will kinda forget about him.

  92. ThePoonTycoon says:
    (link)

@Wilsonian: drop prado for snider. might wait on kubel though. kubel isn’t spectacular, but headley could look a lot less sexy in a few weeks. and kubel kinda balances out the upside/potential hedge on a guy like snider.

  93. Commish Cauda says:

@Commish Cauda: maybin. has the dude walked in 3 weeks? he started out taking walks which was promising despite his awful K rate. now he’s not walking, and that’s the troubling part.

@Wilsonian: where i’ve had room i’ve added stanton. hopefully he gets the call before i need the roster spots as guys come off the DL.

  102. @ThePoonTycoon: How deep of a league are you in? I had the same problem in a 20-team league and I picked up Aviles and also considered Omar Infante (playing while YEscobar is out), Hairston Jr. and Carroll (both seeing increased PT because of injuries) and Brignac, who should get some good ABs with several RHP coming up for Tampa. Those are some deep-league stopgaps until you find out if you’ve got Castro, or in the event you don’t get him.

@Mark Geoffriau: I don’t think so, and i’m a Cub fan who wishes that it was.

I think the real value of this move is for Theriot (who’ll have SS/2B eligibility soon) and the Cubs pitching since there will be a defensive upgrade at SS & 2B.

I’m in a 16-team league and I’m probably not going to make a move for him since I can’t justify dropping Smoak, N Johnson (yet) or Theriot for him.

    L. Milledge doubled to deep left, A. McCutchen and R. Doumit scored, R. Church to third, L. Milledge out at third

This is what really happened – Milledge goes into homerun trout and never picks up his head – the Senators shoot off fireworks as they do when one of the home players hit a home run – the only problem the ball hit off the outfield fence and was in play

  125. mrbaseball says:

2nd offer- Albert and AROD for Votto/Iggla/David Freese- Heath Bell and Brian Wilson (I like this one alot too but only because of the nmumbers in volved and the 2 closers)

@Grey I got Stanton but dropped Cody Ross and am hanging onto Franc…for now.

I just read this about Stanton though: “I’d like to see him get out of some of his current funks and get back on track before moving him to Triple-A,” said the scout. “He’s still getting himself out on some bad pitches, and that’s not something you see from prospects that are ready. I’d give him another month here and let him work on his breaking-ball recognition for another month or so before moving him up to Triple-A.”

We’ll see. Its only 5 keepers, but with stantons ceiling its worth a hold for now…

If Furcal comes back and continues to produce, what do I do with my 2b/SS/MI logjam: Currenlty I have Ian Stewart, Tejada, and Kelly Johnson, all of whom are producing… Furcal’s runs, OPS and SB were real useful though in the first few weeks.

    @Justin

OK, but to be fair, we get to tase you every time you whine about your back again. If it deters you from taking time off, that’s it.

  142. Ciao Grey — Do you still think Brandon Wood could be headed for a breakout? He’s got tons of potential, I know, but I’ve hardly played him in a very deep league where I’ve got three other 3B-eligible guys (Wigginton, Lopez, and Freese). I’ve got roster space taken up by upside guys like Young and Chacin, and I’ve got two guys on the DL (Rollins and Roberts) with no DL list.

I could really use the roster space (I just lost out on Medlen, for example, because I wouldn’t have a place to put him until tomorrow). But I also don’t want to drop Wood and see him turn into WestCoastWigginton while he’s on someone else’s roster. He clearly has no trade value at this point.

What do you think? Give him another week? Or cut bait?

    Grazie.

1.) Any news on Rajai getting moved back up in the order? He’s been getting on base and stealing, but still stuck in the 9-hole.

2.) Snider and Rajai seem like bizarro twins to me (one for SB and AVG, one for HR and RBI). Meaning, I can pick whichever fits my team’s needs if/when I drop Beckham. Or do you see one as clearly a better pickup?

Hmm, saw GTS proposed trade. It turns out that the owner of Sanchez is looking for MI and wants to trade ptiching. Should I offer up stewart or kel jo? Also has Wainwright, Santana and Sabathia but they are probably out of my reach.

    @willclarkismyhero:

So the other day I went to a Giants pre-game party at the ballpark before the Phillies game and ran into Will Clark. He was there hosting the party, chatting it up and signing baseballs. I then walked up to him and asked him to sign my hunting bow. You should have seen his face! He did not know if I was serious or not and finally we both got a big chuckle out of it. He was fired up I knew he was an avid hunter.

I’m starting to get some interest from the Hanley owner in a league where there hasn’t been one trade yet. He’s talked about Morneau + something and mentions specifically Haren/Votto/Marmol.

Morneau’s got great numbers but he was a 4th round pick heading into the season. If there was a redraft, would he go Top 20?

I’ve got 4 closers and can only use 3, so how much would you add to Morneau and Alexei?

Morneau + Marmol + Alexei for Hanley (+I’d play LaRoche at CI and Clipperd off waivers)

    +Nolasco for Hanley/LaRoche/Clipperd

    +Liriano

    +Haren

    +Pelfry and Lindstrom

@Tom Emanski: Saunders was in the top 300 with projections. Shave some numbers off but you get an idea.

@Jackie: Snider? Or Snyder? Snider, Milledge, Stanton, Kearns, Snyder…

    @NukeLaDouche: Grab him.

@Lob Ball: Do you see my current catcher? Jeff “I no longer have a job” Clement.

    @Howard: Sure

@Bodymore: Too many comments, not sure what I should have thoughts on there.

    @willclarkismyhero: Bills

@Awesomus Maximus: Different needs on Snider and Rajai.

@Bodymore: Offer up whichever one gets you the deal.

That was the joke! I did not actually bring a hunting bow to the ballpark, but said that to Will to see what he would say. I always remember him wearing camo in those ESPN hunting shows from the 80s/90s.

  172. Hi Grey — In a vacuum, who do you think will be worth more at the end of the year, between Aramis or Gavin Floyd? Do you think it’s close?

Anybody else with any thoughts about Ad. Jones for Granderson?

I’m just a little worried, cause Granderson stats are pretty much comparable to Jones’ right now. Not good.

I can handle the month without stats, but if the numbers are going to be similar, what’s the point.

Man, I didn’t realize how Granderson really cooled off, after a hot start.

@knighttown: top 20 NO WAY. I’d deal Morneua/marmol in a second and Morneua/Haren even would be more realistic and something i’d do….. morneua is NOT a top 20 player and wont be drafted as one next year.

now i’m just seeing your ideas, morneua/alexie/marmol would be a great deal to bag hanley….

Just how much has Liriano’s value shot up this year? Using Grey’s tiers has he jumped into the Wandy/Price tier, past that into the Hamels/Lee/Nolasco tier or all the way up to the Haren tier?

@knighttown: Morneau + Marmol + Alexei seems fair. Alexei is just a throw-in since you’d have Hanley, and 4th-rounder plus closer seems fair for first-rounder.

Morneau’s a former MVP in the best RBI situation in baseball (i.e. behind Mauer). He is what he is if he stays healthy: .275/30-35/100-120 e.g. a very reliable 2nd-to-4th rounder year to year.

Morneau/Nolasco is also a fair deal, though I wouldn’t up the offer from that.

@Howard: I’m a Krispie Konvert, but McCutcheon McCutcheon McCutcheon. I don’t even know if I’m spelling his name right and I still like him better.

@Elijah: Stanton ’10 = Bruce ’08. Causing many an owner-boner, but not likely to live up to the hype. I love how this morning Yahoo! was touting his 500-foot homer… as if the distance of home runs hit in Double A are some indication of MLB readiness.

Weekend question. I know I should play all these guys, but need to slow down on my innings. Grey, which 1 or 2 are the LEAST attractive options?

    Lester NYY

    Oswalt SD
    Peavy TOR

  180. Baron Von Vulturewins

@Enrique: Hard to compare, depends on needs. Is this a trade? I’d want Aramis. Can’t believe anyone would trade for Floyd right now.

@knighttown: I think he’s Haren tier. A-minus ace. Price may be joining him soon. I wouldn’t trade him straight up for Nolasco or Hamels. Lee and Haren, yes.

@Donnie Baseball: I wouldn’t rush to get Granderson while he’s out for a month…. I think Grandy ends up more valuable at year’s end than Jones, but I can’t ever suggest trading for an injured player. It’s like asking for what’s behind Door #3 when there might be only two doors.

    @and1mcgee: it’s Justin Upton ;)

  184. @and1mcgee: Good point.

  185. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:
    (link)

@and1mcgee: Is it Justin Upton? If so, yes, accept this trade right now.

Even if it’s BJ Upton, it’s still a win for you, though you don’t need Beej and Crawford on the same team. You are not the Rays.

  186. Also, anyone starting Latos @ HOU? I know the rule is to start him only at home, but the Astros aren’t that fearful are they?

  187. @Grey: Hey this Kila cat looks like a Three True Outcomes god on the making! Think the Royals will find him enough PA’s to make him fantasy relevant in 12 team mixed?

He’s put up some nice MiLB numbers. That 18.4%/19.3% BB/K he posted in AAA last season gets me feeling a little gooey inside. Dude must be an absolute gimp in the field if the Royals have taken this long to give him a shot to play somewhere.

  192. Jonathan Sanchez at the new Shea stadium . . . Blanco is 2/2 with 2 hrs and D-Wright hits him well, but other than that, Sanchez should be able to mow ‘em . . . but then again, he could take the whole pack for a walk . . .

I’m leaning towards starting with tempered expectations.

  193. Donnie Baseball says:

    Rather have Aramis.

@GTS: I am the Commish. and I have not said if it is a keeper league or not. on Yahoo!, you establish that when you draft next season and then assign players to teams…. if it is, it will only keep like 3 players. I think I’d make it 2 position players and a SP. not sure…

i guess assume it’s not keeper.

  195. @Arthur O: Gotta start him. This Mets lineup is not good enough for their even to be a question. Of course anything can happen with Sanchez, but you gotta dance with the girl that you brought to the party.

@Donnie Baseball: HoF balloting rules state, “Voting shall be based upon the player’s record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played.”

I’ve read seemingly compelling arguments against Mattingly’s inclusion from people who only factor in “contributions” (he was a major contributor for 4 seasons, not so much outside of that), but never one that factored in the other five areas. More to the point… if Don Mattingly doesn’t pass muster based on all six areas of evaluation, I don’t know of many players that do.

Note on Napoli, so I looked at the HR highlight on MLB.com. It was a flyball that got caught in the jetstream to right center. Napoli didn’t even think he hit it well.

So I wouldn’t blame Scioscia if he didn’t score a point for Napoli on the homerun for realz.

What to do with Chris Perez now that Wood is back? Hold him hoping Wood will be Wood and get injured? Or, drop him for one of: Zumaya, Rhodes, Takahashi, Masset, Uehara, Downs or Hensley. League counts holds, so they’ve all got value. Current RPs are Simon, Rivera, Soria, K-Rod and Bard.
