Steamer Projections - Created in 2008 and maintained and operated by Jared Cross, Dash Davidson, and Peter Rosenbloom. One of the top (if not the top) performing projection systems based on our 2012 baseball projections test. Playing time estimates as well as Saves, Holds, and Quality Starts are provided by Rudy Gamble of Razzball.

Grey Projections - Grey has produced fantasy baseball projections @ Razzball for several years as part of his yearly preseason rankings. His projections have performed admirably against more mathy solutions – particularly given that his projections are release pre-March when playing time estimates are more hazy.

Auction Values  - Two $ values are provided per player based on a $260 budget.  The first one (which also determines rank) distributes dollars equally to hitters and pitchers based on number of rostered spots (so in ESPN which has 13 hitters and 9 pitchers, it would give 13/22 of the $260 to hitters and 9/22 of the $260 to pitchers).  A slight adjustment is made that boost the amount of $ to hitters vs. pitchers to account for the greater predictability found in hitting stats vs. pitching stats in the aforementioned 2012 test.  The second dollar value is based on a disproportionate distribution of dollars towards hitters (for ESPN leagues, this is $180 to hitters and $80 to pitchers).  This valuation leads to rankings more in line with what is seen in typical snake drafts.

Point Shares Methodology - The values under the stat categories are Point Shares.  They represent the estimated difference in an average team’s points if they were to substitute a given player for the average player at his position.  So if a player has a 1.0 for Runs, he would, on average, increase a team’s standing points by 1 point.  Multi-position eligible hitters are assigned their most valuable position for Point Share calculations based on the following order of most valuable to least valuable: C, SS, 2B, 3B, OF, 1B, DH. For more information on the methodology, see here.

Data Sources for Auction Values / Point Shares:  These results are based on a combination of Steamer and CAIRO data as this combination proved to be slightly better than any single source in our 2012 baseball projections test.

Position Eligibility - 20 Games in last season for ESPN and ’2 Catcher’ formats.   10 Games for Yahoo.

ESPN Roster Format - C/1B/2B/SS/3B/CI/MI/5 OF/UTIL/9 P.

Yahoo! Roster Format - C/1B/2B/SS/3B/3 OF/2 UTIL/2 SP/2 RP/4 P.

How do I get rid of the annoying pop-ups that block the top part of the stats? Thanks.

    • What browser and operating system are you using?

Closer projections can’t be right. All of the closer have either 30 saves or 10 saves. Really?

    • Good question! My answer is a bit long but I think background might help in how I project saves (Saves were me vs. Steamer):
      1) Predicting an actual # of saves for a pitcher is a fools’ errand. Predicting a # that doesn’t end in 0 or 5 indicates some level of statistical precision that does not exist.

      2) I don’t predict more than 30-35 saves for any specific pitcher. Of the 19 closers with 30+ saves in 2011, 17 of them saved less in 2012 with only 7 exceeding 30. (for 35 saves, it was 14 closers and 4 hit that # again)

      3) If there isn’t 100% certainty about a team’s closer in the preseason, it is better to distribute the saves versus anoint one of the closers. The certainty increases as the pre-season wears on.

      4) The greatest certainty in Fantasy Baseball saves is the total # of saves in a league. For a 12-team league, I’d project an average of about 1100 saves. (Last year’s RCL averaged 1,091 saves/league with a high/low of 1131/1035).

Given the above, I kept this first round of projections simple. If I feel the guy is definitely the closer to start the year, I gave him 30 saves. If I felt they were in the running, I gave them 10 saves.

In February, I’ll likely create an additional distinction between more reliable and less reliable closers. I’ll probably keep the more reliable ones at 30 and the less reliable ones down at 20 or 25.

For Point Shares/$ Values, I use a fixed league average (for 12, I put it at 1050. for 10, 1000 saves, etc.) that will be greater than the # of projected Saves. This is contrary to every other stat category and is because it accounts for the fact that their will be a significant # of saves coming from unpredictable sources outside the known closers. You’ll still find that Point Shares/$ values rank top closers favorably and that’s because I feel I’m better valuing their ERA/WHIP/K contributions (e.g., Craig Kimbrel is #37 ($21) because his projected ERA/WHIP/K is valued over 50% more than his Saves. In fact, if he was just a Middle Reliever so 0 saves, I’d still value him at $10 (which factors in the opportunity cost of having a reliever w/o saves).

Sorry if this was more detail than you were looking for. BTW, this was very helpful at least for me because I realized the Point Share formula for Saves was incorrect.

  3. UPDATED ON 1/31.

A number of pitchers added – notably Erik Bedard. A bunch of IP changed based on recent team pickups.

  4. * PROJECTIONS UPDATE *

We’ve added Quality Starts and Holds to the Steamer Projections. (Like Saves, these are projected by me so thank/complain/question me vs. Steamer on them).

I desperately want to believe in these rankings, but can someone tell me how on earth Jason Vargas is rated so highly and a Matt Moore or Bumgarner is not?

    • These are just projections sorted in descending order of IP. Not rankings.

And now i desperately wish that i never asked that dumb @$$ question. Since this a steamer rater though, wouldn’t be appropriate if every player was on the Indians?

Thanks Rudy for adding the QS etc. Any chance you would be interested in adding a CG projection?

    • No problem on QS. I don’t think I”m going to get to projecting CG this year. If I were you, I would just grab 2012 data, take the Complete Games / Game Started and apply that to this year’s GS.

Why don’t you project Hits Allowed for pitchers?

    • Steamer projected it – I just felt WHIP was sufficient there as the vast majority of leagues don’t have ‘Hits Allowed’ as a category. Can I ask why you’re looking for it? Open to adding it the next time I update the sheet (assuming it fits).

      • Fenwaysock says:
        (link)

All the leagues I’m in use HA as a pitching category.

        • I just checked and 1 out of 778 survey respondents noted Hits Allowed as a pitching category. So I don’t see adding it.

Hits Allowed is available in the download version of the Projections. So you should be set.

    Rudy,

Is it just me, or do the ERA projections seem really high? Last year, there were 11 SP’s that had 120IP that finished with an ERA less than 3.00. The projections only have one (strasburg), and several that you would think aren’t close for example verlander at 3.51? who hasn’t eclipsed the 3.50 mark since 2008?

    • Yeah, I’ve talked to J. Cross of Steamer on it – notably Verlander’s ERA.

I’m going to ping him so he can respond directly to this.

  11. Before, getting to Verlander specifically…

Even though Steamer only projects Strasburg to have an ERA under 3, it expects that several pitchers (at least) will finish under 3 this year, it just doesn’t know which, since some players will significantly outperform (and some will significantly underperform) their projections. Last year, for the fantasy relevant pitchers, we projected an average ERA of 4.01 and they actually averaged 3.96 (offensive levels across MLB were a little lower last year than expected ).

There’s regression to the mean, the group of pitchers with the lowest ERAs last year will, as a group, have higher ERAs this year.

Verlander is an interesting case though because he throws harder with runners on base and right now we’re not taking that into account in our projections. He’s hasn’t given up very many HR’s despite not really being a GB pitcher (although he was a bit more of a GB pitcher last year than in the past). Steamer thinks he’s been a little lucky with regards to his HR rate and that his HR% will most likely tick up a bit. Steamer does take into account that strikeout pitchers give up fewer HR’s per flyball but maybe it’s underestimating Verlander’s HR surpression ability. We’ll see.

    • Chuck Norris says:
      (link)

@J. Cross: @ Rudy Gamble….. Thanks. That makes sense. I guess since it is stat driven, you aren’t picking favorites to outperform the career/league norms like Grey does.

The reason I questioned it was that I made my own “War Room” using steamer projections & point shares, and was creating mock teams, but I could never reach the ERA projection to “win your league”. I’ll just incorporate a higher ERA to balance it out.

      • @Chuck Norris: Your’e seeing it correctly. Grey’s projections – just like any human ones (so FG Fan Projections another case) – barely use regression. The projections are generally more bullish. The only projection system that seems to be as bullish is Bill James which is funny b/c he seems to be a bearish guy.

Since Steamer regresses the ERA more, the goal ERA would be higher. I imagine subtracting the aggregate ERA of the top 100 pitchers for Steamer from Grey’s will tell you the additional ERA to add to your goal. Maybe something like + 0.20?

        Rudy

        • Chuck Norris says:
          (link)

@Rudy Gamble: Sounds good….thanks for the input!

  12. BigWindy says:
    (link)

Hi Rudy, is the formula you use to project QS published somewhere on the site or is that kept under the hood?

    • The formula is kept under the hood. It’s a pretty straightforward regression-based formula focusing on a pitcher’s projected ERA + projected IP/start.

      • BigWindy says:
        (link)

@Rudy Gamble: Cool, the reason I asked was I’m trying to average out the Steamer/your projections with another set that doesn’t project QS. I played around with some regressions last night and came up with an RMSE of 2.096 and 0.7 R2. In general is that good or bad for making second order projections? I looked at 10 years of data, but only the top 60 starters sorted by GS for purposes of my league (the error reduced substantially once I limited the sample to guys with a lot of starts). I used the same factors you mentioned and threw an exponent on ERA since it had a bit of a non-linear plot against QS.

  13. Aston Gambino says:

@Rudy Gamble – Thanks for putting all this together, fantastic stuff! Just an FYI, I see that Quality Starts is added here on the web page, but it’s still missing from the downloadable spreadsheet.

    • Good catch. The stats in the spreadsheet are limited to those produced by Steamer. I send them the Saves and Holds but haven’t been sending them the QS. Easiest thing to do is just cut/paste from this grid.

  14. Kent says:

Hey Rudy – is there a way to get “Hit By Pitch” and “Hits” added to pitcher projections and “Hit By Pitch” for the hitter projections? Just wondering – thanks for the projections.

    • @Kent: There’s no room on the page to add this but they are available on the export on steamerprojections.com.

      • Kent says:
        (link)

@Rudy Gamble: Awesome – and it looks like they were updated today. The only thing i didn’t see on the pitching projections were HOLDS – am I correct that I don’t see that? I see you’re projections for SAVES, but nothing for HOLDS.

        • @Kent: Yeah, it’s not in the export since I produce those on my end. You can cut/paste the projections on our site to link the holds into the Steamer export.

          • joshzam says:
            (link)

@Rudy Gamble: Speaking of holds, is it correct that only Kenley Jansen is projected to reach 18 holds, and nobody else? Doesn’t that seem low??

            • I see your point. My projection model for Holds has a lot of regression to it. There is very little ‘rhyme’ to the ‘reason’ why Joel Peralta had 37 Holds last year in 77 games with a 3.63 ERA while Jake McGee had 19 holds with a sub-2.00 ERA. Sure, maybe Peralta pitched exclusively with leads and McGee came in more often during tie games, big leads, and when they were down but that’s sooooo hazy. If you think ‘Closer’ is a role with some turnover, imagine the turnover in ‘Reliever who pitches with close leads’ would be. (Note: Jonny Venters had 20 Holds in 66 games last year and he was the ULTIMATE 8th inning guy coming into the year. Teammate Eric O’Flaherty had 28 in 2 less games).

So the low totals for the model taken into account the fact that most pitchers that we would think get 20+ Holds will fall short.

The moral of the story is that drafting for Holds is way worse than drafting for Saves (which is already tough). The key is to draft very good MRs in those leagues who will differentiate vs other MRs in ERA/WHIP/Ks and are slightly better bets for Holds. But if the model said last year that a Venters type gets 30 and an O’Flaherty type gets 15, you can see how that would’ve let to overestimating Venters’ worth.

              • joshzam says:
                (link)

@Rudy Gamble: Very good points, and thanks for the response. I love drafting for holds (which obviously count in my league) because not only is this a category that many (foolishly) punt, and can provide much needed K and ERA help, it also allows me to stock up on potential future closer replacements. I see it as a win/win. What I don’t want is a MR who will not be in the holds/saves mix. I imagine projecting holds should also take into consideration the “security” of the closer above him. It’s possible that a quality MR won’t reach his holds projection because he’s busy racking up saves! One also needs to be familiar with the coach and if he prefers one main setup guy or a setup committee (more fashionable than closer-by-committee). More variables, more complications. I’m currently thinking/hoping that 2013 holds leaders may be lead by Vinnie Pestano, David Hernandez, and David Robertson. Your thoughts? Any others?

                • Those are my hold projections above so that’s my best guesses right now. Honestly, I’d let you choose your 20 best guesses for ‘Top 3′ holds and bet you wouldn’t get all 3.

What’s going on with Wins? There’s a ton of guys winning 20+ with Arroyo leading the way with 28. Losses seems to be off too.

    • @Stan: Good catch. Import screw-up. Added a note re: the Wins/Losses being incorrect on the site.
