The 2014 season is two months old, so it’s data day here at the Razzball Steals Emporium. This is kind of like the chapter review our teachers gave us in school, except there is no test, so everybody wins. We have to mention Dee Gordon to start. His ADP was 222. This is ironic because that’s about how many steals he’ll likely end up with this year. With 34 stolen bases on June 1, the 26-year-old middle infielder is on a crazy pace for about 90 swipes this season. Billy Hamil-who?

Gordon has always had speed, but he’s doing more to utilize it this year in the majors. He’s been successful on the basepaths 92% of the time. He’s swinging at less pitches outside of the strike zone, making better contact, and striking out less in general. Gordon has also been hitting more ground balls, less fly balls, and significantly less infield fly balls. This has all resulted in a better batting average, better on-base percentage, and in turn crazy stolen base numbers. It’s almost as if someone reminded Dee that he was fast and should just try to put the ball on the ground. Amazing!

Gordon owners can enjoy the ride and shouldn’t stay up at night worrying about him falling off a cliff. If anything, I wouldn’t be shy to acquire Gordon off of an owner who was nervous about that very scenario. He won’t provide much outside of stolen bases, but he’ll help you come close to winning that category from a middle infield position, allowing you to roster more balanced players in your outfield slots.

Here’s where we’re at with steals through the first two months in 2014 fantasy baseball…

Looking to upgrade my starting pitching in a keeper league. Looking for advice on the following:

-Who should I look to acquire for my Springer?

-Does trading my Darvish for Wacha and Price make sense?

I’d want a top 25 arm for Springer in a keeper.

Hey mike- thanks for response earlier today; I want to beat my opponents at the wire, jon singleton just got the call up- who do you like better this week at utility taveras or singleton, also drop dee Gordon or singleton at IF spot?
Pitchers I could drop would be zach wheeler or lackey – my other pitchers are mad bum, Strasberg , tanaka & cueto.

I like to own all the top upcoming guys , last season I had Puig, Dom brown , wheeler, Matt Harvey etc etc

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

      No problem. Taveras

I wouldn’t drop Dee unless you have are desperate for power

      • Jake the snake says:
        (link)

        @Mike:

Thanks mike, I don’t want to part w/ dee but on the flip I could use a power boost.
The next two teams I’m facing have power; team team I’m facing this week has Edwin encarnacion , Allen Craig, Adam jones, justin upton, Carlos Gomez, Brian McCann, Ian Desmond, Anthony Rizzo, machado, Miquel Cabrera, & Marte.

Next weeks matchup has Devin marasco, Freddie freeman, cano, Xander Bogaerts, Hanley Ramirez, Justin morneu , Giancarlo Stanton, Jose Bautista , Nelson Cruz, Nick markakis, victor Martinez, chisenhall & on bench cespedes, will Myers & Josh Hamilton.

        My roster

        C- Evan gattis

        1b- goldy

        2b- pedroia

        SS- Alexi Ramirez

        IF- Dee Gordon

        OF- Matt Holliday

        OF- pence

        OF- Michael Brantley

        OF- george springer

        DH- Adam Dunn

        Utility- oscar taveras

Bench- polanco, Carlos Santana, & Bryce Harper DL

        SP- tanaka

        SP- lackey (two starts)

        SP- wheeler (two starts)

        RP- keuchel

        RP- phelps (two starts)

Bench: Strasberg , Bumgarner & cueto

Reason I went w/ lackey & wheeler is for the two starts- my opponent this week has two 2-start pitchers ; homer bailey & kazmir & a one start from sale on Saturday. But his RP’s are actual RP’s/closers unlike mine who have the extra SP’s who are eligible for RP there

For the Home run stats for the league my team is in second to last place with 63 homers -the team I’m facing this week has 103 homers (2nd in the league), team I’m facing next week has 104 homers (1 st in league)

RBI’s I have 285 & again the top two teams are the team I’m facing the week with 360 RBI (2nd in league) & next week team 364 (1st in league)

However I do have the most SB’s with 64 next one close to me is 51.

I have the most runs with 349 runs & team I’m facing next week is in second place w/ 337 – team I’m facing this week has 320 runs.

Total bases I’m at 1030 TB’s, where as the team I’m facing this week has 1129 TB’s (2nd in league). & team I’m facing next week has 1136 TB’s (1 st in league)

        I’m in first in the league w/ 450 1B’s,
This weeks opponent has 403 (same as next weeks team)

Doubles I have 143, this weeks opponent has 136 doubles & next weeks opponent has 148 doubles( this is close to the top)

Triples I’m tied for the top in the league w/ this weeks opponent at 14 3b’s

        Thanks again

            @Mike:

Thanks mike, based on my team do you think it needs a power boost? I could drop lackey since I’m deep at pitching or would you just stand pat

            • Mike

              Mike says:
              (link)

I would stand pat. You are about to get Polanco and Harper in the rotation there.

    Hey Mike,

Would you stash Andrew Heaney over any of the following in a 12 team H2H..

My two bench bats are Torii Hunter and Jon Singleton (just picked him up!!!)

My worse SP are Masterson and AJ Burnett and Gallardo

Thinking maybe drop Gallardo tomorrow after his start against MIN

    • Mike

Either him or Masterson. Stash Heaney

Help do I drop Marlon Byrd for Jon Singleton who just got called up?

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

      Yup I would

  9. Mike says:

Help I’m in a 12 team league I have OF: Trout, Carlos Gomez, Alex Gordon, Byrd, Springer, 2B/3B: Rendon 2B Kinzler 3B: Alvarez, SS: Bogaerts C: Mauer (also 1B),LaRoche, and Rizzo SP: Darvish, Wainright, Sale ,Cobb, Kazmir, Lohse, Ventura RP K. Jansen, Soria, Nathan. I need an off. spark. Singleton just got the call and he is on the wire should I drop Byrd for him?

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

      Yeah I would

  10. J-FOH says:
    (link)

No mention of Miguel Olivio? He just solidified an extended no interruption of Dee with that Tyson he pulled on AD!

    • J-FOH says:
      (link)

@J-FOH: Thats not right, it should be AG

      • Mike

        Mike says:
        (link)

I almost mentioned that as another reason to hold onto him. Let’s say even if AG comes up, they’d still probably platoon him with Dee, and Dee would be on the better side of it.

        • J-FOH says:
          (link)

@Mike: yeah, but those pinch run SB’s would be a tough pill to swallow. The Dodgers need offense, and as good as Dee has performed, there is always real world decision to mix it up.

          • Mike

            Mike says:
            (link)

that’s true, and they did give the AG kid a dumptruck full of $

            • J-FOH says:
              (link)

@Mike: that’s what I have been telling people since day 1, you don’t pay a guy that much, who can hit that well and not play him.

  11. Clint says:
    (link)

If the Royals are attempting so many steals, why has Aoki been so “blah,” Mike? I thought I’d see a better average and more runs along with said steals but it’s like he’s asleep or something. I know the Royals’ bats have been slow to come around, resulting in HIM coming around to home less but sheesh.

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

yeah, he’s been pretty brutal. Grey mentioned it on one of the podcasts. He’s one of those guys that may get to twenty steals on the year, but they are just so spread out it’s mind numbing to own him.

  12. birrrdy! says:
    (link)

REally worried about Gordon starting to do the things he did to threaten his MLB career again. AVG dropping waaay down, lots of 0-4 nights. Plus he’s got chewed off ear Cuban prospect coming back soon enough from surgery threatening his PT down the stretch. Thoughts? IS this the cliff you were referring to?

    tHanks,
    Birrrdy!

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

It’s possible. I just like what’s going on in his numbers in general and even if he comes back down to earth I don’t see it being a crash landing.

As far as AGuerrero, if he eats into Dee’s playing time, Dee would still be on the meaty side of a platoon given the way he’s hit righties.

I have been starting Villar for SBs but it looks like he is slumping and taking some bench lately.
Would Aybar be a better pickup for my MI? I have Segura at SS and Bourn in OF, but I am having trouble winning SBs.

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

Slumping for sure, but I’d still rather have Villar. I think he still had seven or so steals last month.

Looking to stream 2 players for SB’s for next 2 days in my H2H league.

If Dyson starts tonight do you think he can be successful against Molina or would it be better to go with James Jones?

What do you think of Venable vCole and Morton (on your list for worst pitchers AND worst teams). He only has 2 SB’s on the year but they both came this weekend.

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

I like the idea of Venable against those guys. Probably lean Jones just because Molina is so tough.

  16. Mike n Mike says:

Hey Mike, currently sitting at 5-4 in a really competitive H2H pts league. Would u drop Morneau for Singleton upside? Still bummed about losing Fielder, had aquired Morneau for Asdrubal Cabrera, but I have a feeling Singleton will get me more points (Morneau regressing a little bit). Any thoughts?

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

that’s a tough one cause Singleton is shiny and new (and good) but I’d still prefer Morneau at Coors this summer

Have Bautista, J Up, Khris, Singleton, A Gordon, Rajai, Polanco and span

McCann, Freeman, Cano, Seager, Andrus elsewhere

    Thanks!

I could see it. Singleton will be a nice addition to your lineup in that format.

Mike: Good stuff – from a proud Gordon owner.

The A’s seem to refuse to steal given the amount of base-runners and the team of fellas capable of stealing a base they have.

Meanwhile, the Angels are the shocker – is there something going on here. Scioscia is normally Mr. Green Light. On Saturday, they started running on the A’s (with no steals = only situational happenings prevented them) – the A’s responded by bringing up Vogt to put some respect back behind the dish. Really, the Angels as they are configured now, don’t have much speed. They were down in 2013 too. Proving, even Mr Scioscia can’t make chicken soup outta chicken poopoo.

Knowing the pitchers is so important in BB Take Kohn of the Angels, he is super easy to run on. First, his leg kick (in an RP this not a good thing) and maybe more importantly, his catcher has no clue where the ball is going to go – not saying Kohn does know either, but by then, the ball is out of his hands. That guys like Kohn don’t get run on more often is incredible to me.

Where do you think K Morales lands? Can anyone match the Yanks? If he lands on the Yanks, what a lineup nightmare they will become when Tex returns to health. It already is squirrelly enough in the Bronx. I don’t want him on the Yankees for this reason. Please, get RazzBall to use all its influence with MLB to have him land somewhere else. OK

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

Good points. I’ll have to figure out a way to pool some RP data at some point.

My guess would be Yanks if Tex’s wrist is screwed up again.

remember though that most of PIT’s steals allowed were likely when martin was hurt. he’s back now.

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

      interesting

    • A Wesley Snipes Life says:
      (link)

@A Wesley Snipes Life: noticing Cole’s numbers, it’s possible with Martin back, all non-Cole PIT starters would actually be bad steals bets.

      • Mike

        Mike says:
        (link)

looks like Martin is only 5-for-25 this year though (20% CS%)

Wonder if the injury has anything to do with that because he’s usually one of the better CS% catchers

        • A Wesley Snipes Life says:
          (link)

@Mike: that’s why i brought that up, he usually is.
