Here’s the deal. We all love guys with exciting upside, but every now and then we forget that there may still be upside remaining in certain players. Starlin Castro is currently sporting an uninspiring .650 OPS, by far a career low. When I was at the Cubs game this past Sunday, it was mentioned that it was Castro’s 500th big league game. Pretty impressive, especially considering that he’s only 23. So, let’s think about it – Are we going to put more weight in his struggles this season or the chance for a rebound, based on his past numbers and youth? I’m going with the latter. In fact, I’m going to go out on a limb, let’s call it an arm and a leg, and say that I wouldn’t be surprised to see him produce a .290/.340/.450 line for the rest of 2013. That would be elite for a shortstop, especially a healthy one. Typically shortstops hurt your OPS, but Castro can be one who actually helps it. I’d be seeing if his current owner is worried about him, especially in a keeper league. He could continue to be a top shortstop for the next decade.

Mark Appel – In last week’s post, the commenter who correctly guessed that I’m going to be in Bolivia for the next two weeks, Philsfan76, wanted me to provide an update on Mr. Appel. Scott, the prospect writer, must have sensed my lack of insight on him because he came to the rescue and wrote about him the very next day. Also, since I’m going to be on vacation beginning on Thursday, be sure to get your questions, comments, and suggestions for bands that I need to see in before then.

Mike Trout – Rule number one in fantasy baseball: Never doubt Mike Trout. In April, I said, “His slow start doesn’t have me worried at all and I fully expect him to post similar numbers to last year. I kept hearing the “fact” that he would regress, but I don’t think that’s a given. Regression is never inevitable.” I still expect him to approach his 2012 numbers this season, so do with that what you will.

Chase Headley – I thought he was going to turn things around last month, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. Still, I believe that he will approach last year’s .286/.376/.498 line going forward. He really turned things on in the second half last season and I’m thinking that could be no coincidence since he’s a switch hitter. If Mark Teixeira has taught me anything, it’s that switch hitters awaken from their hibernation around the All Star Break.

Pedro Alvarez – I’m still surprised he’s as widely available as he is. On a different note, let’s see if these Spanish lessons are working. Fill in the blank: Pedro tiene _____.

Matt Holliday – He currently has a .743 OPS. I expect him to have an OPS that is at least 100 points higher for the rest of 2013.

Brett Lawrie – He’s being dropped everywhere. I’m not entirely confident about a rebound (how’s that for an endorsement?), but I’d take a chance in all leagues where you have DL or bench space.

David Freese – Three weeks ago, I said that he’s going to turn things around. In the past 15 days, he’s had over a 1.100 OPS, and he’s still available in some leagues. You know what to do.

Looking at a multi player trade that gets me Starlin Castro. Need to include a SS in return. Who do you like less ROS Simmons or Gregorius? Like Castro’s potential too.

@fantasyvultures: I’d rather have Gregorius ROS. Good luck with the trade.

One more. Deep league bench question. With Rendon getting the call and soon to be 2B/3B eligibility, would you take him over Arenado ROS. Like Arenado for potential in Coors durin summertime but seemshe is overmatched righr now. Take Rendon’s potential and cut ties?

@fantasyvultures: I’d give Rendon the slight edge due to 2B eligibility. I think they’ll be about even ROS.

Very nice post Tom, I want to know what you think about haing multiple hitters on your fantasy team in a points league.

I have Cargo and Tulo and its been working out very well. I’m currently trying to acquire Dexter Fowler for Alex Gordon, which would land me the Rockies 2,3, and 4 hitters. Can I make an exception for Rockies hitters here? Or is having too three hitters on one team going a little overboard?

Also, Pick up Freese and drop Ovando(on my bench) as a bench player in case he keeps this steak up and his value skyrockets? Currently have Beltre at third and a a Puig/Gordon combo at UTIL..

Thanks and may the FantasyGods be with you .

@Fister Furbush: Hey FF – thanks and good one!

I actually don’t worry much at all about having hitters on the same team. Having all three of those guys is fine with me. I’d pick up Freese too.

I’m a Castro owner in a 13 team keeper league. Every owner has a SS they’re happy with. I posted in another thread that I’m not even getting other owners interested when I include Castro as a toss-in for what would otherwise be straight up, fair 1 for 1 trades. Currently 20th in the ESPN player rater for SS. Makes me kinda ill when I drafted him at pick 37 thinking I’ve got a fixture in a keeper league only to see Segura get taken off waivers in week three and just mash! His is the kind of start that makes you hate him as a fantasy player and never want to own again.

@JDW: Yeah, it’s not fun right now, but I’m very confident that he’ll turn things around. Don’t sell him below what he’s worth. Instead, maybe you could buy low on Heyward/Stanton? They’ve started slow too…

      • harkrider says:
        (link)

@Tom Jacks: I have Starlin, Heyward, and Stanton. I hope they all turn it around because without the starts for Beltran, Alex Gordon and Dominic Brown, I would be scrapping the bottom of the barrel so far this year

@Tom Jacks: I am OF heavy and SB light. Thoughts on trading Beltran for Marte or Bourn? I just picked up Revere for SB’s, but I need some speed. I could trade Votto for Trout, CarGo or McCutchen, since I have Goldy and it would just open up my UTIL spot. Thoughts?

    (link)

I’m in a 12-team keeper OPS league where you can keep 5 players, forfeiting a pick next year if you do so (based on the round you drafted the guy). I was just offered his Heyward for my Taveras, with Taveras having been drafted late. Worth it?

    • Tom Jacks

      Tom Jacks says:
      (link)

@ucbsharkbait: What would inflation be? As in, which round would Taveras cost you the following year? And which round does Heyward cost?

      • ucbsharkbait says:
        (link)

@Tom Jacks: Heyward would cost me a first-round pick next year, so very unlikely anyone keeps him. Taveras would cost a 17th rounder and could be kept at that price for the year after next, also, but after that he’d be thrown back into the pool automatically. Thanks for your thoughts!

        • Tom Jacks

          Tom Jacks says:

    TomJacks,

Any thoughts on a Zunino call up? With some guys DL’d I’ve been filling holes with random youngsters: Derek Dietrich, Nick Franklin, Omar Qintanilla… all currently on my bench.

Would you drop any of them to stash Zunino, in order to backup Mccann at Catcher?

14 team mixed, deep rosters: Currently sporting Kelly Johnson (2nd), Jed Lowrie (SS) and Jurickson Profar (MI) in my starting lineup.

    Thanks in advance.

I’ve kept Castro in the later rounds the last few years, and I’ll probably keep him again next year but man do the Cubs need to

    A) Find a spot in the lineup for this guy and leave him there

    B) Get guys around him in the batting order than can get on base consistently.

My second point is more mute this year since Starlin himself isn’t that hot & Rizzo’s a good piece to that puzzle, but it goes downhill after that. Just hope they don’t opt for more pitching first

    • Tom Jacks

      Tom Jacks says:
      (link)

@RyKo: Yeah, I agree. I’m somewhat convinced that Theo will get a stud hitter in the offseason. Seems like they almost need to and they’ve got the payroll space…

  20. Jason says:

a little early, i know, but which 5 would you rather carry into next season…

Braun, Votto, Longo, Justin Upton, Heyward, Cespedes, Machado, Verlander, Strasburg, Felix

And is felix and machado enough to move Braun on a keeper?

    Thanks

    • Tom Jacks

      Tom Jacks says:
      (link)

@Jason: I’d probably keep the first four hitters and a pitcher.

I wouldn’t do that deal in a keep 5 league. Since you’ve got a bunch of top guys, I’d push hard on a 2 for 1 the other way. Something like:

      Longo + pitcher for Miggy
Heyward/Cespedes + pitcher for Cano or Cutch or Fielder, etc.

    • Tom Jacks

12 tm roto with 6 keepers.

My Fowler, Bruce, & Altuve for his McCutch & Starlin. I can’t decide if I’m giving up too much or aiming way too high because Fowler & Bruce are hot and Cutch & Starlin are cold. I’d have to fill an OF spot with a FA-level guy. Do you believe Fowler has broken out and is a real 25-25 guy?

For reference, this year I kept Felix, Bumgarner, Trout, Phillips, Bruce, and BButler. I’m always a fan of consolidating talent but I’m worried this might put me completely out of contention this year (although I’m only in 8th right now).

    • Tom Jacks

      Tom Jacks says:
      (link)

@stumanji: I’m a fan of consolidating talent too and like that deal. I don’t see Fowler being that good. Maybe you can grab somebody like Quentin off waivers?

Alex Rios and/or Austin Jackson once he’s off the DL. On that note, not sure who I’m going to drop when he gets back. The rest of my OF is CarGo, Starling Marte, Cruz (who might be out b/c of PEDs anyway…), Domonic Brown, and Matt Joyce. Rios is only on the bench because he’s cold and Frazier is getting hot currently.

        • Tom Jacks

He has performed better in the second half the past couple years, and I think that potential is still there. I don’t like the idea of selling your studs for cheap. I do like buying low though, so maybe you could find an owner of a similar player, who is fed up with his guy…

@mUshi: Yeah, I think that’s a pretty good haul for him.

My offense sucks . Really really sucks.
Do we think Pweeeg is gonna stay? Got outbid $17 for this monster. Was thinking of offering J Zimm and Morse . Rest of rotation ( Lee,Shark,Beachy,Niese,Hammel & Wacha)

@JG_ism: I think that’s giving up too much for him. Who are some of the guys on waivers?

    Arenado, Joyce, Rendon ROS?

    Thanks!

@Mike: I’d prefer Joyce in a utility spot.

Trying to get a SP. Carpenter or prado for annib Sanchez?

Mh other option is to trade marte. What sort of SP should I expect to get for marte?

Is giving marte for Sanchez fair if he doesn’t want the other two?

@Gbuscaino: Yeah, I’d trade any of the above for Sanchez.

    Who wins this trade

    Gordon/Parnell or Marte/Romo?

        @Tom Jacks:

Is it pretty lopsided or is it fair?

My outfield is cargo Bruce and Stanton, I had Parnell in my rp spot but his bs/L killed me yesterday…Balfour and Romo seem like a legit combo for closers…and now I’ll have Puig Marte and Nava the hut to platoon at UTIL for me.

Does that make the trade seem model legit?

        Thanks tom

@Mr. Fister Furbush: Hey FF – That sounds good, given your situation. I don’t think it’s lopsided.

            @Tom Jacks:

Awesome, that’s a good feeling of relief knowing that I didn’t blow the trade.
            A good day to you!

While were on shortstops: Would you swap Jose Reyes for Jean Segura? Do you expect Segura to out perform Reyes over the next 3 years? Also looking to ship Beltre. Any ideas on who would be the best switch if I wanted to get a 3b back in return (again considering production over the next 3 years in a keeper league)? Thanks!

    • Tom Jacks

      Tom Jacks says:

@Paddyman: Yeah, I’d do that swap in a keeper league. I think Wright and Machado would be good targets for Beltre.

Bonifacio or Rendon? I’m waiting for Utley to come back. Lead league in HR already. Need R, SB, OPS more than anything

@KT: Bonifacio could kill your OPS. I’d rather have Rendon, despite the lesser amount of steals.

Here are my SP’s. Grienke, Samardzija, Ryu, Minor, and Scherzer. We have a 150 starts limit. Should I pick up Teheran or Gee and let them start some or just stick with what I have? I would have to drop either Revere, Aoki, or Profar and I’m not sure I want to do any of those just yet

@harkrider: I’d just stick with what you have.
