0Lots of times I’ve been known to practice the art of Saberhagenmetrics. A player does well, I back off the next year. A player turns your team into his own private piss bucket and I get excited about his undervaluedness. (<–Made up word of the day!) This isn’t the case with Joey Votto. He, friends, is my new love. I wrote him a letter the other day and it went something like this, “Blah blah blah I love you. Blah blah blah wanna hang out? Blah blah blah what’s your home address? Blah blah blah sorry, you felt the need to get a restraining order against me. Blah blah blah see you in Canada, which is outside this restraining order’s jurisdiction!” No reply. Yet. Anyway, here’s why I think Votto is a 2011 fantasy baseball keeper:
Last year wasn’t a complete fluke. He did, however, have a dream season that I don’t think he repeats. Yes, I like him, but don’t think he repeats. It’s a paradoxical hedge and I’ll explain. 16 steals last year is not the high end. It’s the high end taking off the high end’s ceiling and making a new high end. He’s closer to a 8-12 steal guy. Still good, but cuts his value a bit. 37 homers are terrific. Don’t think he gets there again either. He’s more of a 30-35 homer guy. Still good, but cuts his value a bit. In 2010, he swung at more balls outside the strike zone than in 2009. Not a terrific trend. What I think was going on is everything he was hitting was falling in so he was like, “What the eff, I’m going to swing at everything.” Average might come down next year. Not too low, probably closer to .310. The Reds had one of those dream seasons where everything clicked. If they’re off at all, Votto’s Runs and RBIs could fall a bit. Now all this sounds like an overrated post more than a keeper post, but Votto’s still an elite first baseman in the prime of his career and a first round pick. Next year, if you get 95/32/110/.310/10, you’ll take and love it. Assuming you have him as a 3rd round pick or later, that’s great value and well worth keeping.

@Steve: If Pujols is going for $70 or so, and you have a $300 cap, Votto at $31 is a fantastic idea.
@Grey: Before posting I read Steve’s question and recognized there are still some of us Rotoians remaining in the sport. As such, where do you peg Votto’s value in a 4×4 league, traditional $260 team salary? As a reference point, Pujols was the top dog this year at $50.
My league is a limited time keeper one (6 player annual max) but at a 1.5x original cost the second year and 3x original cost for the third year. I got Votto for $17 last year, paid $26 this year to retain and would have to allocate $52 to keep him next (I suspect I could get him for less…but you never know what might happen on auction night).
He’s shown the speed in the minors (as well as having several steals in injury/depression-shortened seasons). I could see him stealing 16 in his career again. And to mention the amazing: he finished with zero infield popups on the season. Given his Pujols level year, he should be ranked as a first rounder next season. That’s a great trade chit if nothing else.
clearly the hype , this off-season , is going to inflate votto’s perceived value .
already i’ve seen him on some lists as a 1st rounder … (talk about man-crushes !)
up until this year , he has been out-performed by kevin youkillis and adrian
gonzalez , both of whom should provide better value in 2011 .
personally , i have to turn away every time youkillis enters the batter’s box ,
but , should adrian take up residence in fenway , he becomes a strong value play .
I need a place to weep, and this seems the best: I had Joey Votto AND Miguel Cabrera (and Ubaldo Jimenez) on my fantasy keeper team this year (Votto second year in a row, and aiming for a third), and I came in sixth (out of 11)! Wah! Thanks Kemp, Figgins, Y. Escobar, Carlos Lee and James Shields for all your help.

Crazy stuff- not only did Hudson have a LD% of 13.6, so did Carmona. Since 2001, only two pitchers have recorded a LD% under 14- Lowe and Wakefield, in I think 2003 and 2004 (not sure about the dates).

I could really care less about the Bautista projections. Like Mini Donkey in 2010, I know he won’t end up on any of my teams in 2011, so I guess the best case scenario over the off season would be that ESPN et al hype him like mad so that someone grabs him in the first round.

we’re trying to progress the number of keepers with each succeeding year .
some owners are balking , (they want to keep 4 again) , because they want to know a year ahead of time , the number of keepers .
to their way of thinking , we should have decided last february for 2011 .
we didn’t .
we will vote , this coming february , for the year 2012 .
in the meantime , the commish has settled on the compromise # of 6 keepers for 2011 ….. so that we can continue with off-season trade talks .
because we will all keep 6 players , our round 7 will actually be the 1st round of the draft .
you will have 1st pick , as you have taken over the last place team , and we do a bottom-up snake , in hopes of accelerating the potential for parity .

the original vision was to go 4-8-12-16-20-24-28 keepers .
in hopes of being more democratic , the commish has left the decision for the number of keepers up to league vote.
the compromise # (of 6) , while attempting to appease everyone , has one major drawback , in that until we reach a more substantial # (like 8 or 12) ,
3 for 1 type trades will remain non-existent .
this will all become mute this february IF we vote 8 (or more) keepers for 2012 .

my expectation is that AFTER this coming draft , we will see a flurry of 2 for 1 and 3 for 1 type trades .
because , by that time we will have the benefit of knowing the # of keepers for 2012 .
this past winter , owners lost contact and were isolated from each other .
we weren’t even sure who (or how many owners) would be returning .
now , with the compromise # of 6 in place , we may see some off-season dialogue .
