There’s no Reyes, Rollins or Hanley on this list of shortstops.  This list is guys that can be had later in your drafts if you’ve punted shortstop or are still looking for a middle infielder.  Look at this as a supplement to the top 20 shortstops of 2010 fantasy baseball.  If you’re feeling especially industrious, click on the players name to read more about them or to see their 2010 projections.  Anyway, here’s some shortstops to target for 2010 fantasy baseball:

Elvis Andrus – He’s slated to start the season in the nine hole.  I’ll bet my two hole he moves up the order by midseason.

Asdrubal Cabrera – Speaking of two holes, Asdrubal ended up on this list of shortstops to target rather than a 2nd baseman because he fits into my ideer of what I want at short more than 2nd.  It’s the more speed, less power thing.

Alcides Escobar – I’ve compared him to Andrus in a past post — one letter off! The nice thing about Alcides is his defense is so good that he should have a longer leash than some other rookies like, oh, I don’t know, Mat Gamel.

Everth Cabrera – Okay, you know that crazy, roid rage British chef that does Dinner: Impossible?  You are him in your draft and your mission is to try to find steals late at the middle infielder position and make Chicken Parm for twenty-five hundred people.  When you’re taking a donut in power from an outfield or utility spot from someone like Juan Pierre, it hurts you.  A donut from MI, you can handle.  Mmm… donut.

I’m in a situation where I’m looking at guys like this, for those of you drafitn on Yahoo you might find the following interesing

    Adnrus 114 Here; 111 Yahoo
    Asdrubal

  7. FredayCouples says:
    (link)

My bad, let’s try that again. Ratings from razzball v. yahoo take 2:

    Andrus 114 Here; 111 Yahoo
    Asdrubal 142 Here; 106 Yahoo
    Alcides 186 Here; 334 Yahoo
    Everth 193 Here; 269 Yahoo

I’d love Andrus but I’m scared someone will take him around 100. No way I’m getting Asdrubal if people draft where Yahoo has him. Which means I’m probably ending up with Alcide or Everth (yikes/fun at the same time)

Scherzer……2 IP last week = 13.5 ERA. 2 IP today = 30.86 ERA. Gave up a HR to Heyward too as the Braves are trouncing the Tigers 8-3.

  9. Nate Marcum says:
    (link)

@Frank Rizzo: I have been committed to staying away from Scherzer and will continue to do so. Does he have nasty stuff at times….Yes! Does he also have a wonky arm that has given him troubles since his days at Mizzou….Yes….Two yesses makes a no, unless you are Ben Roethlisberger, where two “yes’ ” in his book equals a no divided by two yes’ which equals’ a maybe which usually equals jail time. So as you can see, Scherzer is a no. Or a yes.

    Grey, help….my head hurts!

  11. sean says:
    (link)

@Frank Rizzo: Having pitched 2 innings last week with an ERA of 13.5 means that he had to have thrown a scoreless inning. Good with the bad, my man. Aside from injury news, you have to take this stuff with a grain of salt. Scherzer is probably working on his secondary pitches or grooving fastballs in an effort to follow a new pitching coach’s mantra of getting ahead in the count. If you really want to draft him, and this type of news circulates, it’ll only help you get him later in the draft.

So I just finished drafting an ESPN mock and I tried to simulate drafting in the RCL (picking sleepers a lot earlier), but eventually I just gave up because when you have 5 bots at the end of Rd.7, it becomes useless.

let me say that there was some INSANE value I just couldn’t pass up. Namely, Kemp (#13 overall), Grady (#36 overall), and Aaron Hill (#76 overall).

I know, I felt bad after picking Hill because you have a whole schmohawk post dedicated to him Grey, but he was about 20 spots lower than what YOU have him, so there has to be value in that.

    1) Ryan Howard
    2) Matt Kemp
    3) Grady Sizemore
    4) Mark Reynolds
    5) Andre Ethier
    6) Josh Johnson
    7) Aaron Hill
    8) Elvis Andrus (one of those RCL simulated picks i mentioned)
    9) Clayton Kershaw
    10) Jose Valverde
11)Julio Borbon (same RCL type pick)
    12)Asdrubal Cabrera
    13)Carlos Marmol
    14)Geovany Soto
    15) Ian Stewart
    16)Jonathan Sanchez
    17) Ervin Santana
    18)Octavio Dotel
    19) Garret Jones
    20) Travis Snider
    21) Jason Frasor
    22) Kevin Gregg
    23) Chris Young
    24) Johnny Cueto
    25) Takashi Saito

My thoughts are that I’d finish in the last half of avergae. What are your thoughts on the bullpen? Starting rotation? Areas of weakness?

@Grey: I feel like the hype has driven Elvis’ value too high. His ADP in yahoo! is 115.9 and I have been mock drafting him in the 10th round. My strategy is to punt and target Escobar (230 ADP) in the 19th or later. Is Elvis really worth the 9 round premium or is punting the right move?

That list of names is very confusing. It reads like a list of Cameron Crowe, Cameron Russell and Russell Crowe. More confusion than necessary.

  18. @ChicagoMike@majortommy@Grey: Agreed on all accounts. The Everth value that late in the draft does seem to have some benefits; & his projections may be a tad low. Probably a few less HRs than Elvis, but a greater AVG, & will likely hit up in the order.
& yeah, I’ve been tripping over all their names consistently. Makes me miss the days of deciding between Robin Yount, Cal Ripkin, & Ozzie Smith. Sure, also a little odd, but wonderfully dissimilar.

    @David: Hehe

@FredayCouples: I don’t really mind Alcides or Everth. They’re not going to be that far off from Andrus.

@Frank Rizzo: I like that, good news.

@Nate Marcum: Scherzer is broken own in my pitcher rankings. He’s an avoid.

@Eddy: Nah, that’s good value for Hill, gotta go for him there. Bullpen looks fine… Honestly, if you have three closers, I don’t really care who you have, assuming you didn’t draft Broxton, Mo and Nathan in the 6th through 8th rounds. Starting rotation looks fine… Team looks good overall.

@matthole: If you draft balanced guys, I don’t think you need 2 of them. But I would take two, if I had to. At SS and MI, obviously. I’d take Andrus around the 10th and the others around the 15th.

@Chicago Mike: No, I like Alcides. Whichever you can get is cool.

    @Commish Cauda: Medlen

@zombie: Could be more Runs, but I don’t think the average will be that much better, if better at all. Average is a funny bird though.

    @Mikey boy324: Probably around the 15th/16th.

@Chicago Mike: Agreed, Yahoo really f’d things up for us by ranking Elvis so high (Borbon too, for that matter). I refuse to take Elvis before round 10 and would much prefer round 12 or so. is Elvis really that much more valuable than Everth, who is going much, much later? I see Everth running a lot (more than Escobar in Mil.), as SD will be prob. looking to play more small ball.

@Martin: Don’t think you told me OPS. I’d take Tex and Holliday, Fielder and Holliday, Kemp and A-Gon, in that order. Really wouldn’t care if I had any combo of those. Why did I tell you that before? Because you said you wanted Kemp and I don’t think it’s that big of a difference and if you want someone you should own them.

Hey Grey, what’s a realistic trade offer to accept for Prince Albert? It’s a 12 team 5×5 league, we keep 4. Plain & simple, I did a lousy job of drafting last year, Beltran & Soriano, second & third rounds respectively! 1st & 2nd rounder too much, or not enough!? Maybe Kemp & Sizemore!? Whatcha think? Thanks in advance!

  35. Vince says:
    (link)

@Chicago Mike: I’m actually glad I took Andrus in the 9th round in my RCL draft. Alcides was taken in the 13th and Everth in the 15th. These are the rounds where I take SPs and RPs (in my previous mocks I never took Andrus and I was able to wait after these 11th-to-16th rounds to take either Alcides or Everth). So I would’ve been left with not much had I passed on Andrus this time.

The Yankees released a statement last week saying they never authorized Galea to treat the slugger. If Rodriguez was treated without club consent, any attempt to determine whether he violated his record $275 million, 10-year contract, its guarantee language or baseball’s collective bargaining agreement likely would hinge on whether treatment was elective or necessary.

Look at A-Rod numbers the treatment was worked like a gem – attention yankee management – I come to the ballpark to see Arod crank one out – not for Derrek Jeters infield hit

ITS HIGH ITS FAR ITS GONE – AN HGH BOMB BY AROD

I can’t keep track of all this crap – 1/2 the players doing this stuff have not even been caught and the players that were doing this stuff MLB looked the other way for years so Arod won’t get into the Hall of Fame – I don’t care I am not going there – well unless they make the Worlds Best Hot Dog – I been to the hall of fame – its in the middle of no where – the only cool part of it you might get a chance to see an UFO if you are traveling at night

@GopherDay: Pujols seems fine, but Zimmerman and Sizemore both K a lot. I’d lose one of them. I’d consider Mauer in the 2nd if he’s still there since he doesn’t K at all or Rollins. You can grab Zimmerman or Sizemore too.

@David: Any of them are worthy… I’d take them Cano, Lester then Lind, in that order, if you’ve already taken an OF.

    @mrbaseball: A UFO? Ha!

@mrbaseball: No, you’re not crazy to go with Hanley first if that’s how it plays out.

@Barker: Don’t you love leagues that you have to reach for DeRosa in? Yeah, 20 teams are tough. I did a 20 team recently and I think I like your team better than mine. A few picks I’d shy away from — Dice K, Ellis, Hideki — But in that deep of league, it’s a good team. If Vazquez and Cuddyer can approach last year’s production, you should be in the hunt. Maybe you can flip a closer for a piece in May. Looks good though.

@martin: Votto is worth more than A-Gon if he does what he’s capable of. When a guy has never done it vs. a guy that has three years in a row. It’s good to side with the known. But Votto’s capable, for sure.

re: Mayberry Method — It’s something that should be intuitive. Don’t see why it needs a name. It’s like saying the Water Drinking To Stay Alive method. But, yeah, it’s good to have balanced players. It’s why sometimes I look at teams and say, “You have speed on one side and power on another.” You’re much better with CarGo and Kemp than Dunn and Bourn.
