Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

I mustache you a question, when you drafted, were you Axfording a hard time from your closer?  Then you got it.  John Axford finally was removed from the closer role.  Francona said, “I’ve seen crap before, but Assford demonstrated a whole new level of excrement.”  Or something to that effect.  I’m not one for details.  Axford was replaced by the committee of author Bryan Shaw, Nick at Nite star Cody Allen and The RZE.  That’s also the order I’d pick them up.  There’s prolly no reason to mess with The RZE, especially after he was treated like Jodie Foster in The Accused yesterday.  Speaking of The RZE, Method Man and Raekwon forgot one way to torture their opponents when they talk about rusty screwdrivers and whatnot.  “I’ll hack your fantasy team and pick up John Axford and leave him in your active lineup and let him keep feeding you terrible stats, and feeding you, and feeding you and feeding you.”  Now, that’s gangster.  There’s a good chance Axford never sees another save this year.  Collective wisdom says Cody Allen will be the closer, but collective wisdom also said Obama was going to make a difference.  Yesterday, the Indians set up the game so Shaw would be the closer, whereas Allen’s one save came when Axford was garbage and Shaw had already been used.  Anyway, here’s what else I saw this weekend in fantasy baseball:

Josh Tomlin – 6 IP, 2 ER, 6 baserunners, 2 Ks, ERA is at 2.13.  Yay, that’s nice.  The Stream-o-Nator hates his next start and I tend to agree.

Yan Gomes – 2-for-5, 2 runs and his 5th homer.  If Ramos doesn’t vamos, I’m about to Go-mes.

Matt Joyce – 2-for-5, 2 RBIs and his 3rd homer.  Has there ever been a less heralded three-hole hitter? It’s like Joyce is being overlooked for David DeJohnRitter and Ben Zobreasts.

Joe Mauer – 1-for-3, 1 run as he returned to the lineup.  Women in Minnesota with ugly leg sweaters rejoice!

Samuel Deduno – 6 IP, 3 ER, 7 baserunners, 5 Ks.  Fun fact!  When he wakes in the morning, it’s to The Boondocks theme song, Deduno, flip, chop, chop, chop.

Eduardo Escobar – 2-for-4, hitting .333.  He doesn’t have speed or power and that’s a terrible way to start a sentence for fantasy value.  He’s got intangibles up the wazoo!

Ian Kinsler – 2-for-4 and his 3rd homer.  Leading off for the Tigers (sometimes hitting 2nd) has produced more RBIs than the guy he was traded for in the 300-pound Boca Burger, Prince Fielder.

Robbie Ray – 6 IP, 0 ER, 5 baserunners, 2 Ks.  Brad Ausmus said about letting him start a 2nd time, “It wasn’t even a decision.”  You know who is the best manager for making non-decisions?  Matt Williams.  Ausmus is top five.  Ausmus might have to make a decision soon though, because Anibal is returning.

Jeurys Familia – Terry Collins said Familia has moved closer to being the, uh, closer.  Great sign for Familia’s fantasy value or Collins was feeling nostalgic on Mother’s Day and wanted to say something nice about Familia.  “On Mother’s Day, when players use pink bats, I’m reminded of my dog’s pink bat.”  That’s Terry Collins just feeling emotional.  Since Farnsworth, Dice-K and Valverde are like the Familia that make you say, “You can choose your friends, but can’t choose who the manager makes the closer,” and no one else has been near decent, I’d grab Familia.  He could be the closer within a week for the rest of the year.

Jenrry Mejia – Sounds like he’s headed to the bullpen, which could push Rafael Montero into the rotation.  Prospect Scott already gave you his Rafael Montero fantasy.  It only disparaged me three times.  His numbers in Triple-A are outstanding — 8.9 K/9, 3.67 ERA — when you consider he’s pitching in the PCL, which is the equivalent to pitching on the moon.  I grabbed him in one deeper mixed league.

Daniel Murphy – 3-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 2nd homer.  Murphy’s Law states that just when you start to wonder why you have Murphy on your team, he homers or steals a base to remind you.  Murphy’s Law doesn’t say anything about what would happen if you were to wonder about Murphy every day if he’d do something that often.

Eric Young Jr. – 3-for-6, 2 runs and 2 steals as he led off.  The only thing I can think is Juan Lagares changed his name to Eric Young Jr.

Cole Hamels – 7 IP, 1 ER, 10 baserunners, 10 Ks. Well, it looks like he entered the game healthy, but then threw 133 pitches, so I’m not sure how he left. I’m guessing with a wet noodle hanging from his shoulder socket.

Matt Wieters – Hit the DL with his sore elbow after the Orioles said he wouldn’t. The O’s lie, they lie with their cries of Wieters’s health. Now they’re saying if he can’t throw by July 1st, he’ll have Tommy John surgery.  Can’t he DH until the end of this season?  Are they worried he won’t be able to throw the helmet after he DH’s?   What gives?  Throw Grey some knowledge!

Chris Tillman – 5 IP, 3 ER, 9 baserunners, 3 Ks.  Looks almost identical to the pitcher he was last year, maybe his sideburns are a tad longer.  Oh, and his peripherals look the same too, which is to say a borderline shallower mixed league starter rather than taking a step forward and being a necessary mixed league starter.

Jason Castro – 1-for-5, 3 RBIs and his 5th homer.  You, “Hmm, maybe I shouldn’t have dropped Castro for Pierzynski.”  You seeing Pierzynski had a decent game yesterday.  You, “I’m going to take a nap.”

Chad Qualls – 1 IP, 0 ER and his 2nd save.  He now has a share of the team lead in saves.  If anyone can get eight-plus saves on the Astros, I’d put my money on Qualls.  That money being a nickel.

Chris Sale – Will make two rehab starts prior to returning.  That means you have one maybe two rehab starts to play up how he’s about to return so you can trade him.  It’s a Sales trick.

Gordon Beckham – 2-for-4, and has hit in his last 7 games.  He’s not exactly Nolan Gordonado, but he has been swinging a hot bat.

Chase Anderson – 5 1/3 IP, 1 ER, 3 baserunners, 6 Ks as entered the Diamondbacks rotation because none of the coaches turned their chairs around for Bolsinger.  Anderson has exceptional numbers at Double-A (8.8 K/9, 1.4 BB/9, 0.69 ERA), but he’s also old for that level (26).  It’s like when you shave your 13-year-old’s mustache and put him in a T-Ball uniform.  No good ever came of shaving a mustache.  I’d look at Anderson in NL-Only and very deep mixed leagues.  He could be the kind of guy to have a few decent starts prior to the league catching up to him.

Gerardo Parra – 2-for-5, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and his 4th homer and 2nd one in three games.  Sung like Rico Sauve, “Caliente schmotato.”

Miguel Montero – 2-for-2, 2 RBIs and 5th homer.  Must…resist…urge…to…drop…Ramos…for…Montero… And…resist…urge to…write…in…multiple…ellipsis…

A.J. Pollock – 2-for-3, 1 run, 2 steals.  Pollock’s stat line confused him, wondering how he got two steals on one run.  Pollock’s now stolen five bases in the last five games, and I picked him up in one league.  SAGNOF!

Martin Perez – Will have an MRI on his sore elbow.  If you wanna send him to the Disgraceful List, you don’t need to make pretend.  Just do it.  Starting in Perez’s place on Wednesday is Nick Tepesch, who is kosher for Passover, but not kosher for decent fantasy starter.

Alex Rios – 2-for-4, 2 run and 2 steals.  Praying this gets Rios hot because so far he’s given me a severe case of the yawns.  The whole Rangers team actually.  Him, Fielder, Beltre and Choo (homered yesterday) were supposed to be the new sexy, so far they’ve been the new blech.

Dustin Pedroia – 2-for-4, 2 runs and his 2nd homer.  Good to see Pedroia stand up to adversity as he faces the murder charges for his nephew, King Joffrey.

John Lackey – 7 IP, 2 ER, 7 baserunners, 9 Ks.  His peripherals are now 8.8 K/9, 1.9 BB/9 and 3.17 xFIP, which is great, excellent, terrific, or its apt acronym GET.

CC Sabathia – Placed on the DL with fluid in knee.  Crystal Light, specifically.

Michael Pineda – Yankees reported that Pineda won’t be back in a month as they originally thought.  They’re prolly just stalling him until he’s in his 30’s, so he doesn’t throw off the whole team chemistry.  Member when Jesus Montero for Pineda seemed like a big deal?  Yup.

Aramis Ramirez – To the DL with a strained hamstring.  It’s no surprise, since his Christian name is Aramiss Time Ramirez.  This means more playing time for Mini Donkey (2-for-5, 1 RBI) and possibly Jeff Biatch.  If Biatch can stop acting like a total Mean Girl.

Francisco Rodriguez – 1 IP, 1 ER and blew his first save as Te(i)x went deep off him, but K-Rod ended up the Escape Goat, so all’s well that ends, well, you end the cliche.

Rickie Weeks – 3-for-5, 1 run, 2 RBIs as he got the start the last two days over Scooter.  That’s fine, whatevs, but Rickie Weeks who didn’t even warrant starting until this weekend was batting third, while Segura hits 7th.  Really?  Really, Seth Myers?

Adam LaRoche – To the DL with a quad strain.  It’s straining men!

Gio Gonzalez – 4 1/3 IP, 7 ER.  Gio looks like an economical substitute for a number one starter…*drives it off lot*  Holy Jesus Guzman, why is there smoking coming from under the hood?!  What are those flames?!  And why are they also coming from my anus?!  GIO!!!

Derek Norris – 2-for-4, 6 RBIs and two homers, hitting .385.  Two catchers I previously had on my team went deep three times yesterday.  Meanwhile, Wilson Ramos got the day off.  *removes The Bell Jar from bookshelf, opens to first page, sticks head in oven*

Brandon Moss – 3-for-4, 1 run, now hitting close to .300 in the last week with 2 homers.  A rolling Moss collects no… Uh…. A rolling rock is a beer that drinks with reckless a-Brandon?

Craig Gentry – 2-for-5, 1 run and his 6th steal, hitting leadoff.  Hasn’t done much since Coco didn’t heed the B. Ware signs on the fence, but Gentry is in a good place to succeed for the short term.

Scott Kazmir – 7 IP, 0 ER, 4 baserunners, 4 Ks, lowering ERA to 2.28.  That’s beautiful, is that felt?  No, it’s Kazmir.

Casey Janssen – Activated from the DL.  Loup-Cecil-Delabar can go back to setting him up and sounding like an archipelago off the coast of Florida.

Marcus Stroman – 1 2/3 IP, 4 ER.  You’re a Stroman, not an Astro, man!

Drew Hutchison – 4 1/3 IP, 3 ER, ERA up to 4.37.  His xFIP, K and walk rates are much better than he’s showing and I’d try to stay strong with him, but I know it’s gotta be hard in some leagues.  Look at me, sympathizing with you.  We’re over-the-internet friends and that is an uncommon bond.

Hank Conger – 3-for-4, 5 RBIs and his 3rd homer as he hits .314.  It’s too bad The Sciosciapath is giving him the Napoli treatment, which means no matter how well Conger hits or how much nipple his mom shows, Scioscia won’t make him the starting catcher.

Howie Kendrick – 3-for-4, 3 runs and his 8th and 9th steals, hitting .313.  I told you he’d be good (about two and a half years ago)!  I’m like Nostradamus with a broken wrist watch.  You can call me Nostradumbass.

Alex Gordon – 3-for-4, 2 runs.  Super, great, wonderful.  Hit a frickin’ homer!  Alcides Escobar (2-for-4, 4 RBIs) hit his 2nd homer yesterday and Gordon has one homer on the year.  Did the Mega Maid from Spaceballs suck all the power out of the Royals lineup?  How does Eric Hosmer (2-for-5, 1 run) and Gordon combined have the same power as Alcides?  Oh, and Billy Butler (1-for-5) has one homer too!  Dubya tee eff!

Chris Young – 8 IP, 1 ER, 3 baserunners, 3 Ks, lowering his ERA to 2.63. His xFIP says he’s been very lucky and his strikeout and walk rates say he’s been hella lucky and the paint-chipped ceilings in the M’s clubhouse say his luck is hit or miss.

Dustin Ackley – 3-for-4 and two solo homers, his 3rd and fourth.  He’s got the same number of homers as Alex Gordon, Butler, Hosmer, Aoki, Lorenzo Cain and Johnny Giavotella, and I’m mentioning Giavotella only because he homered yesterday, otherwise Ackley would’ve out-homered the Royals entire lineup.

Corey Dickerson – 1-for-4 yesterday with a caught stealing, after homering twice on Saturday. He’s now hitting .375, though on the Rockies they have like five guys hitting at least .350.  Keep an eye on Dickerson in mixed leagues if his big game on Saturday adds a playing time feather to his cap and Weiss calls it macaroni.  Didja know macaroni was like phat back in 1700’s?  We should bring that back.

Charlie Blackmon – 1-for-4 and his 9th homer.  Straight macaroni!

Billy Hamilton – 2-for-3 and his 12th steal as he returned to the lineup.  He must’ve been feeling more Bhealthy and less Billy.

Homer Bailey – 7 1/3 IP, 1 ER, 6 baserunners, 6 Ks.  In two starts, he’s going to throw his annual no-hitter, so if you want to buy him low, you better hurry.

Aroldis Chapman – 1 IP, 0 ER, 3 Ks and Jonathon Broxton returns his giant badonkadonk to the waiver wire.

Evan Gattis – 1-for-3, 2 runs and his 8th homer.  And to think a few years ago Gattis would yell, “Home run!” when a passing motorist threw a half-eaten hoagie out the window of their car near him.

Jason Heyward – 1-for-3, 2 RBIs and his 3rd homer.  Hopefully this is a sign that he’s about to get hot, but he homered in his first major league at-bat and we see how well that was a sign of things to come.

Aaron Harang – 6 IP, 2 ER, 8 baserunners, 9 Ks.  For the sake of Leo Mazzone, Bobby Cox, Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux, could Harang start looking bad just so it doesn’t seem like the Braves could put anyone in the rotation and make them a sub-3 ERA pitcher?  *Mike Minor slowly tiptoes out of the room*

Starling Marte – Day-to-day with a sore back.  C’mon, Starling, inaction from a gerund is just confusing.

Jaff Decker – 0-for-1.  Was called up by the Pirates because they’re an outfielder light with injuries.  He’ll probably hold a press conference and tell the world his name is really Jeff Dacker.  At least that would make more sense.  What on earth is a Jaff?  He’s a low average guy with some power and speed who will prolly be a bench player.  Now shake your Jaffy taffy!

Jordy Mercer – 2-for-5, 2 RBIs and his 1st homer.  He’s hitting .300 in the last week and was a preseason favorite by some — don’t look at me — to break out with his mollywhopping stick.  This could be the start of a little hot schmotato’ing, so do onto Jordy as you wouldn’t do onto Jaff.

Jason Grilli – Threw a bullpen session on Sunday, which put him about ten to fourteen days away from returning.  Sounds more like Jason Slow Cooker.  *high fives self*  Ow, carpal tunnel!

Will Venable – 2-for-4, 2 runs and his 1st homer.  So far this year, he’s been garbage on the surface of the sun, but this could be the start of something.  I’d absolutely take a flyer on him if he were available.

Robbie Erlin – 6 1/3 IP, 0 ER, 5 baserunners, 7 Ks.  Hodgepadre!

Carlos Marmol – The Marlins designated him for assignment. His assignment is to throw like someone other than himself.

Henderson Alvarez – 4 IP, 5 ER.  Live with inferior stuff and die with inferior stuff, which sounds like something a capitalist would say.

Christian Yelich – 2-for-5 and his 3rd homer.  He’s hoping that homer will go a long way to getting him a prom date.

Brandon Hicks – 1-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 7th homer. He would have the 2nd most homers on my RCL team.  Oy gevalt!

Pablo Sandoval – 3-for-5, 2 RBIs, .189.  Too bad hitting his weight has lost some of the panache.  He’s been one of the unluckiest hitters so far, and could see him hitting closer to his pre-diet weight soon.

Kenley Jansen – 1/3 IP, 3 ER, ERA is up to 4.58.  This year everyone but Jansen is having heart problems when he pitches.

Yasiel Puig – 2-for-5 and his 6th homer, and 2nd homer in the last three games, hitting .318. I read about Puig’s escape from Cuba in ESPN The Magazine that involved drug cartels, smugglers, crooks and murderers.  Most of them are still after him for payback. Okay, now it makes sense why he drives fast.

  1. ‘morning Grey.

I’m guessing this may be your only catcher question or closer question today. So enjoy!

I’m a Wieters owner scrambling for a replacement in a 14-team redraft league, I grabbed Norris as an immediate replacement. But other choices are Jason Castro, Grandal (@Col and @Cinci this week), Navarro, Pinto, Zunino, Suzuki, Jaso, and Aviles. I don’t mind going with the hot hand and then switching and in this league I’m doing well across the offensive categories … I’d like to avoid the BA drain and get occasional power stats. Who are your top couple of choices from this crew?

And on relievers: My whole closer corps (Axford, Broxton, Cecil) evaporated this weekend. I dropped Broxton and Cecil but missed out on Allen by minutes and instead ended up with Shaw and JSmith … now that’s looking smart. I’d have liked to hold onto Broxton a bit but needed the roster space. Britton and O’Day are still available … would you grab either one in lieu of JSmith or even Axford (who I plan to bench to see if he can reclaim the role)?

    Thanks!

@Enrique: grandal may be a nice temporary fix at catcher ………. flip a coin on the closers you are talking about.

    • @Enrique: Just saw that Familia is still available in the same league. So I have three reliever spots currently occupied by Axford, Shaw, and JSmith. Am I better off with any of Familia, Britton, or O’Day in one of those spots?

Great write-up as usual! Have Cody Allen and lost out on Shaw to team that bid $75 in NFBC. Oh well. I have to think harder for this week’s lineup than most of my past schoolwork.

For Mon thru Thurs set batter lineups my OF looks like this:

    Heyward
    Yelich
    Revere-only plays Tue/Wed vs. Angels
    Duda-2 at Yankee/2 at Citi
Maybin-monday off, next 3 at Cincy
De Aza-Mon-Wed at Oak, Thu off

for last 3 spots, who is the odd man out from Duda/Revere/De Aza/Maybin?

For 9 weekly locking pitching spots (Archer is glued to my bench indefinitely):

Cashner (hell week for him with road at Cincy and Coors, but can’t afford to bench)
    Gray at Cleveland
    Quintana at Astros
    Samardzijia
    Strasburg
    Melancon

for last 3 spots who would you pick among Joe Smith/Frieri/Rondon/Qualls/Allen?

Allen is truly the best reliever in the Indians bullpen. However they like him best as a situational weapon later in games, regardless of inning. He’ll close occasionally, but they like him too much putting out flames in a roving role to lock him into the ninth inning. Another factor is arbitration. Closers quickly become expensive. The Indians saw Chris Perez eat a fair chunk of payroll (munchies?) and he wasn’t even elite. Allen could be, with Greg Holland being an apt comparison. No way are the Indians giving out Kimbrel type money for a closer.

Shaw is intriguing. Hes been excellent since the Indians got him in a trade with Arizona last year. A scenario could transpire if he takes every save chance capably and axford continues to look lost that they name shaw the full time closer. He’d be a middle of the road closer, like a Casey Janssen or grant balfour type. He’d be less costly arbitration wise than Allen. If he did get too expensive they’d not lose any sleep if they traded him.

In a few weeks if axford throws some shutout innings while getting his control back then francona will put him back into the 9th inning. The Indians feel they are a better club when the bullpen roles are more defined and they have an established guy (preferably axford) as closer. Who doesn’t, right?

Francona (whos usually laid back and personable) actually took umbridge with a reporter today when the term “closer by committee” was mentioned to him. The term and situation irritates him. Itll be settled by either shaw or axford being “that guy” within a month.

    • @gareth: Nice summary. I was thinking the same about Shaw and Axford, but didn’t see a permanent Shaw as as valuable as Janssen or Balfour. That’d be nice, especially the way he just fell into most teams’ laps.

      • goodfold2 says:

FWIWerth, I mentioned this in the comments yesterday, but apparently Allen would have entered the 9th inning yesterday had he finished off the 8th cleanly. This is according to Francona, so it could just be manager speak. Probably need one more clean save opportunity before this shituation is clear.

The Arizona / Cleveland / Cincinnati trade has worked out well so far for the Indians.

They have Trevor Bauer looking good in AAA.
Bryan Shaw has established himself as a key late inning guy, effectively replacing joe Smith (who got an expensive 3 year deal in free agency).
They flipped drew Stubbs to Colorado this offseason for Josh outman, who’s a been a solid second lefty in the pen so far.
they got a nice season out of matt Albers as the long man in the pen in 2013. He signed as a free agent with Houston this offseason.

Meanwhile the Reds have a compensation pick for losing Shin Soo Choo. jason Donald was released.

The diamondbacks traded for didi gregorious from the reds to fill a hole at shortstop only to find they had a similar guy all along in Chris Owings. Lars Anderson and Tony sipp are no longer with Arizona.

    Happy Monday!

In a league where I’ve got wholesale pitching issues, I’ve tried to bandage the shituation by picking up spec closers and a couple MR guys to help w/ratios (3 SP/3 RP/3 P slots):

SPs – Adverb, Hamels, Cueto, Kluber, Salazar, Fister, Smyly, Montero (dropped Perez), Holland (DL)
RPs – Lindstrom, Loup, Qualls (dropped Santos), Brothers, Wade Davis, Britton, Familia (dropped Farnsworth), Crain (DL)

Would you drop any of those guys for any of: Kelly (DL), Feldman, De La Rosa, Vogelsong, Erlin, Miley, Colon, Vargas, Skaggs? And if so, who for whom?
I know, it’s a pretty ugh-tastic list – just trying to figure out if any of them AREN’T streamers…
Also, of the drops I made today, would you want any of those guys back?

    Thanks!

Theory on Wieters: he is a boras client, and boras tells his people that playing through injury costs them $$$ because teams pay for numbers not “toughness.” E.g. Jacoby D. Ellsbury.

If so, might be disagreement between boras camp and team about right approach to this injury.

    • Jamiehov says:
      (link)

Despite the homer it’s not looking good for Castro. It’s nice that he is still batting 3rd but in a good lineup he’d be hitting 7th or lower. Yesteday’s HR came on a “get me over” fastball after Tillman walked 2 to open the game. He was just sitting FB on the first pitch knowing the pitcher just wants to throw a strike and got one down the pipe.

All those Ks every game… I dunno the last time he hasn’t K’ed in a game… doesn’t bode well for his season. He’s actually chasing fewer balls out of the zone (per fangraphs) than last year but he is not making good contact with strikes in the zone. It’s getting a little to late to assume it’s just a slump or it’s too early.

Derek Norris may be related to Chuck Norris, except better. He grows a more kickass beard and he’s such a beast his bat doesn’t hit the ball, the ball voluntarily homes in and flies into his bat.

I just got offered his Homer Bailey for my Trevor Rosenthal. It’s a 10 team Roto league so there are always really good streaming options (Eovaldi and Kluber recent examples). We also have a 200 starts limit, which makes Rosenthal a little more valuable because he’ll get you around 100K’s without counting against the start limit. Despite all of that I still really like Homer Bailey, should I pull the trigger?

    Rotation is Bum/Tehran/Gray/Chavez/Eovaldi/Kluber/Cobb(dl)
    Closers are: Perkins/Balfour/K Rod/Janssen

I have 9 out of 10 points in Saves so far and think those 4 guys can still keep me competitive in saves throughout the year if I lose Rosenthal. Thanks Grey/Razzball readers for the advice

        (link)

@Adam Jonesin: That is an interesting take on Swisher….”slump”. I thought it was just that he wasnt very good and in mid-30s and set for life being in year 2 of 4 year $56 million deal (the one where the Indians had to be bidding against themselves). Funny the talk about not wanting to play closers “closer” money in Cleveland when they can afford to pay Swisher $14M per year.

Tanaka, Gray, Bailey, Ventura, Liriano, Wily Peralta, McHugh, Erlin, Bauer (stash), Cobb & Taijuan Walker (DL)

    Thanks in advance

@DancinHomer: i’m not grey, but i would find a way to add all three of the relievers given the question marks. i would also jump on montero over mchugh, lots of upside there.

      • DancinHomer says:

        @Joe:

Thanks Joe. I actually dropped Santos (going to the DL now anyway) for Shaw. And I plan to drop McHugh for Montero.

I only get 3 adds per week (got 1 more after adding Shaw & Montero), so would you drop Axford or Erlin for Familia/Smith as well (preference on either) or hold till later in the week to see how things pan out or if I’d need to swap in a bat in case someone gets hurt.

        • Joe says:
          (link)

@DancinHomer: i think i would go familia just because it seems like he could get the permanent job. I like smith too, but it seems like the halos really want frieri closing instead.

Need to fill one spot in my rotation for the upcoming week. It’s a 10-team mixed points league. Choosing between following:
    Koehler (2 starts)
    Collmentor (2)
    T Wood (2)
    Samardzjia (1)
    Beckett (1)

Stream-O-Nator and the “Two-StartaPalooza” article are in disagreement on a couple guys, so seeking a little advice. “2-Start“ has Koehler in Tier 2 but SON doesn’t like him (@LAD -4.5; @SF -2.6); “2-Start“ doesn’t like COllmentor as much, putting him in tier 3, but SON is a little more optimistic (WAS 5.2; LAD 2.0). Travis Wood is available in Tier-2 (@stl 4.0; MIL 5.8). Or I could just go with 1 start pitchers Samardzjia (@stl 9.2) or Beckett (MIA 19.6). Thoughts? I’m leaning towards Beckett’s better matchup.

  69. JoeMorgan'sMustache says:

As a segura owner, I am frustrated that he isn’t batting second. At the same time he really doesn’t deserve to based on his play. 3 walks in 34 games and a .273 on base percentage doesn’t come close to cutting it in the 2 hole. Moving him down hasn’t done anything to help. I want to believe, but his second half last year and now his crap play this year sure doesn’t give me much optimism. Also, the 7 sb on 12 attempts isn’t good at all. I simply can’t find one thing that he is doing well at this point.

    • stonepie says:
      (link)

@JoeMorgan’sMustache: i tempted to sell him low (which i never do), pick up a waiver wire SS and move on. seems like he might be sagnof at this point yet someone else may buy into him

Why Quality Starts are FAIRER than Wins.

I’m in a ten team ESPN League that counts both QS and WINS. This gives us an immediate example as to why QS are a better, fairer fantasy baseball stat.

In that league I am tied for first in QS with 44. But my team is 8th out of 10 in Wins with 22.

The guy who is 7th in QS with 28 is 2nd out of 10 in wins with 29. Dude has more wins than he does Quality Starts. Any of you in leagues using wins where you prefer QS – use that example to convince your league mates. It only took us a dozen years to finally abandon wins for QS.

    • JoeMorgan'sMustache says:
      (link)

@Moronymous Lohse: We finally moved from wins to QS in my keeper this year. I hate wins as a cat man…hate it with a passion. We use saves and holds in there, so each pitcher essentially has it’s own faction..so to speak. Seems to be working very well.

      • Moronymous Lohse says:
        (link)

@JoeMorgan’sMustache: That’s good news for your league. Yeah we use SV+H too. I love that stat almost as much as QS.

        • JoeMorgan'sMustache says:
          (link)

@Moronymous Lohse: Yeah it’s been great..hope my other leagues make the change one day. Maybe yours can get rid of wins next year…that has to be frustrating the way things are playing out.

    • Joe says:
      (link)

@Moronymous Lohse: the other argument that is also usually left out is the RP picking up a bullshit win even though he sucked.

the only negative that i miss is that it makes carrying 95% of middle relievers pointless, unless you use holds as well. It was nice having one or two elite middle relievers who could net you an extra 4 or 5 wins each while also carrying good peripherals. they essentially equaled an above average starter.

      • Moronymous Lohse says:
        (link)

@Joe: I do love the 2 top RPs as a replacement for a solid SP strategy. I suck at doing it myself. I’ve tried. But I love the idea behind it.

    • ashtray says:
      (link)

@Moronymous Lohse: I’m down with QS but even that isn’t a very good stat. How is it that 3 ER in 6 IP is a QS but 4 ER in 8 or 9 IP is not?

      • Moronymous Lohse says:

As a Commish who’s policy is to let any trade go through, unless the rest of the league votes it down. These two deal just went down with the last place team and two others:
1: Team A(Last place ) gives Molina, A.Jones ,Danny Farquhar and Uehara. to Team B for Puig, Y.Gomes and Brothers.
2: Team A gives A.Reed, T.Hunter and Matt Carpenter to Team C for Cueto.

Its a 13 Team keeper: of where you drafted the player from the year before. daily mixed 6×6 (no holds) roto.
Team A is saying that he wants to keep Puig :and Cueto for next year, but its only May. A lot of the other owners are upset because the deals are too one sided.
Seems like both are way one sided.
What do you guys think ?

      • goodfold2 says:

    Fielder for Greg Holland
Fielder + Jesse Chavez for Bumgarner or Tanaka

Also, thanks for the high bid recommendation on Adam Jones. Beat out the next guy by about $50 so now my outfield is truly stacked (Cutch, Gomez, Puig, A Jones and Harper when off the DL). Yet somehow I’m still in 8th. Hopefully things turn around soon.

    1) Drop Ramos for Miggy Montero? Or wait and see what Ramos does today? He’s a Rosario fill in only, so I’m looking for a one-night stand, not looking to go steady.

    2) My closer corps looks more like a corpse with Soriano, Rodney, Hawkins, Johnson. There are arms like Allen, Smith, Familia, Lindstrom on the wire. Allen is my favorite of the bunch especially in our Ks/9 league, but he’s not the “closer” (rumor is he won’t be because he’s arbitration eligible and the saves he could rack up would make him too expensive next year). About the Rafael Montero call-up for the Mets. His first three starts are against The Yankees, The Dodgers and the D-Backs. All at home. Then he’s away for The Phillies and the Cubs. Then back at home for the Brewers. Then the Padres and Marlins. If he looks even mediocre in either of those first two against the Yanks and Dodgers – and with few walks – he’s got a nice stretch after that. He’s 6’0 185lb righty. MLB.COM has vid. Would you rather own Taijuan Walker or Gyorko moving forward? I am starting to feel like Tevya ..

Gyorko had his 2 home run game this weekend. On the other hand Gyorko is mostly sitting on the bench so if he’s going to hit a home run once in a while and then 0fer the rest of the time it’s really not that helpful. On the other hand Taijuan Walker has just been a tease and was my second to last pick and I got Gyorko 7th. On the other hand Gyorko has already been replaced through trade (I have dee gordon now) and I need all the pitching and have a good amount of power (abreu, arenado, votto, bautista, jones, bruce, gomes) and already some batting average issues. On the other hand Gyorko is in Cinci and Colorado this week so maybe he’ll heat up…On the other hand Walker is due back soon and I’ve waited so long already. Help me out of this loop!

Lovin the Wu Tang/Axford reference but the ultimate keep feeding you bad stats torture has gotta be Sidney Ponson. How that guy continued to get paid to throw baseballs is beyond me.

Anywho, got a trade I wanted to run by you guys in a 14 team H2H 6×6 (OPS, WHIP):

Lawrie, Khris Davis, Teheran for Brantley, Daniel Murphy, Roark.

I have Teheran – trying to sell high at a profit even though I’m a big believer. I have Bumgarner Iwakuma as 1/2 punch so not overly concerned. Have Gyrko at 2B but we have a MI slot and I could use avg/r/sb. Lawrie is kind of dead to me – I reluctantly drafted him and don’t think he’ll ever live up to the hype. Murph and Brant are criminally underrated.

    Thoughts?

    • Grey

      Grey says:

      Don’t like the trade

@Smitty: What about something smaller? 1 for 1 or 2 for 1? Teheran for Donaldson or Myers?

You’re giving up all the upside in the first trade. Brantley/Murphy both 12HR/20SB but K. Davis could hit 25 HRs and Roark might now be ownable soon (no track-record of success.)

So I was offered Chris Davis for Homer Bailey, I’m not sure if it’s worth doing. It’s a h2h dynasty league with 3 year contracts. Davis’ owner has him as a 11th round pick from last year meaning I’d have one more year after this one. My first baseman right now is David Ortiz (he’s eligible due to Yahoo’s criteria). This is my first year with Bailey and I got him in the 5th.

My hesitation is what my starters look like with Bailey gone. Kazmir, Grey, Fister, Salazar, and Alex Wood (sort of but not right now) with Tony Cingrani and Taijuan on my dl with Archie Bradley in my NA. There’s a move limit of 50, so streaming pitchers is impossible. I have a solid BP of Romo, Street, Benoit, and Shaw, and the league has categories for holds as well as for loses.

So do I make the move?

Over the last week, I’ve made a few trades that roll up to Rizzo/Bourn/Peavy/Haren for Votto/Holliday/Robertson/Pomeranz in a 14 team roto. To help replace the pitching, I also picked up G.Floyd and Voglesong ( my top 4 SP are Felix, Stras, C.Lee and Wacha so thought Haren/Peavy were expendable to address other needs).

Which side do you like better and do you think the 3 headed monster of Pom/Vogel/Floyd has potential to work out as 6/7/8 starters for me?

Hi, 12 team keeper 5×5 head-to-head weekly 1-win format. I have a huge hole at 3B (Aramis), and a ton of starting pitching depth. I could acquire team A’s: David Wright for my choice of one SP (Homer Bailey or Iwakuma) + one OF (Werth or Pence). I’m so-so deep at OF w/ Werth, Pence, Heyward, Cuddyer, Ozuna, Springer. Any combo of these that would be worth acquiring Wright? I’m likely keeping the OFs at the end of year and would be 50/50 at best to keep the arms if it matters.

    (link)

Well Albright, thanks to you I spend all morning reading about gerunds, participles and progressive tenses. I won’t bore you with a fraction of the stuff with which I might bore you. I will say that “starling” is not a gerund but rather a diminutive form created by adding “-ling” as in “duckling.” Starling coming from the germanic “staer.” So upon further review I find that joke to have been well struck but just fowl. Oof.

On a sidebar, if a blurb on a fantasy baseball blog derails my day by sending down an internet grammar rabbit hole, is this perhaps a sign that the work focus isn’t where it needs to be?

I think Chavez will have one of his on starts. Home at the spacious O and against a team that hasn’t seen him. This will only be his 2nd start against a team outside the AL West. I think there will be less familiarity with his stuff. Hopefully he comes out and locates well. Should get some run support as the A’s have been swinging it pretty well.

    Grey,

You seem to have always been ridiculously negative on Chris Sale, or at least believing that he’ll inevitably be visiting DR James Andrews soon. Is it just his awkward mechanics that bother you so much? I mean, I guess he’s been injury prone over his few yrs in the majors- but hasn’t every SP?

How hard should I try to be selling him? I drafted him in a deep keeper league two yrs ago (14th rounder this yr, would become 13th rd eligible 2015, 12th rd 2016 and so on), so there’s a ton of value here.

He’s always worried me a bit- just not sure HOW worried I should be.

      @The Guru:

This is some crazy shit. I would really like to understand the correlation between the number of guys with ungodly stuff and the number of TJSs.

Is it that the size and strength of players has outstripped the physical capacity of the ligaments and tendons in the arm? Or is it that there have been changes in underlying mechanics that add velocity but increase arm stress? Is it the supposed workload of guys who these days play year around traveling competitive on multiple teams?

Then there’s the other recent phenomenon of the second TJ. The fail rate is now higher than ever.

If in fact Fernandez is TJS we will probably see this topic raised to yet another level of visibility and we’ll get a lot of crazy explanations from different people. I sense a Mike Marshall sighting is nigh.

      • goodfold2 says:
        (link)

@OaktownSteve: there’s been no indication about jofer having elbow issue. i did read recently that a lot of it is that young pitchers play nearly to whole yearly at young ages, so that by the time they’re in MLB their elbow ligaments have already been damaged for many years, just not torn (yet)

      @burningbridges247:

That’s a tough call. I think I’d hold Frieri if you can afford a little bit of a gamble. He and Allen both have the chance to have very helpful K rates long term and Frieri seems to have the job. I think it’s been documented the Indians clearly prefer to have Allen in a set up role due to cost concerns as well as a SABR dedication to using their best reliever more flexibly than designating him the closer. I like Rondon as well, though he hasn’t had a good health track record and pitches in a park that gets very dodgy in the summer for the long ball.

I am genuinely sad, far beyond any fantasy consideration, at the sudden Jose Fernandez news. I HOPE that the Marlins are just letting the kid sit after a rough outing. To catch his breath and using the DL as an excuse. This kid is GOOD for baseball. Really good!!

For an example – look at his reaction when Cargo CRUSHES a ball against him during a game he was dealing. More video of Jose shows he actually said “WOW!” with a smile on his face when Cargo did that. As a baseball fan – we need and love Jose!

But not Jose. I really do see him as the next great one. Pedro. Johan. Roger. Randy. Guys with regular names that, when said, have heft and history.

Garcia, Moore, Cobb, JoFer, Bruce, Eaton on one team, Harper, Belt, and Sale on another.

with all these candles everywhere baby’s mama thinks I’m turning Wiccan

@Aubrey Plaza’s Pillow: very true. My pitchings been carrying me so I can take a hiccup.also now I can stream away to lock down k’s and wins without worrying about my era or whip! Mr. Brightside!

  279. Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
    (link)

AND that’s what i get for giving any value to Lyons last start where he looked pretty good, ball moved a lot, lot of K’s. Nope, that was just ATL making any old schlub pitcher look good. CUBS are a low scoring offense too. SON agreed, thank god one of the leagues i picked him up is H2H, and the other i’m already the bottom of pitching.
