CBS is reporting that Villalona is being released on bond from jail. He was in jail because is charged with shooting a man.

Directly from the article, “Villalona turned himself in 12 hours after a Sept. 19 shooting at a bar in La Romana. He could face up to 20 years in prison if found guilty of killing 25-year-old Mario Felix de Jesus Velete”

He pitched in a small time summer league in my hometown in Illinois. I didn’t think his stuff with that great, especially from the left side (he was sitting 75-85mph with OK movement), but he got the outs.

I hope he is able to keep switch pitching. I especially hope he makes the big leagues, because I have a his player from that summer, and he autographed it twice. Once as a righty and once as a lefty.

I think the power is there. I won’t say he’s going to be a superstar because that is too hard to predict but I think he’s heading in the right direction thus far. He should adjust and succeed next year and produce numbers similar to his career numbers so far. He doesn’t strikeout much which is awesome. He has been awful this past (Aug) month too going 19 for 77 with 3 HR, 3 2B, 6 RBI striking out 10 times (13 K%) and walking twice (2.6 BB%). These aren’t numbers you expect your top prospect to be producing. He hit well in A ball but assuming it will translate to all the levels is just silly. Yes he hits for power, but he isn’t right now, 6 extra base hits in a month is okay if your Juan Pierre.

I am not worried about his walks right now either, but I would like to see steady improvement from level to level, or season to season. Patience doesn’t just appear. Power doesn’t either which is good for him because that shouldn’t go away. However, I am still withholding any high expectations. He will be an average first baseman at best and an adequate third baseman just not Wright or ARod or even Aramis Ramirez.

Yes, Vitters is struggling a bit since his promotion to high A but he was killing the ball prior to his promotion both for AVG and for Power.

I understand you want to see the guy walk more but walks dont get you promoted…. power and BA do. He can work on the walks as he moves higher up and is being challenged more. Right now I would just take pleasure in the fact that he is confident that he can hit just about anything thrown to him.

.324 in low A…. .316 in A…. I am not worried about his walks yet.

Even with his struggles in High A, he has increased his BB % from July to Aug. His K% is only 11%. .248 babip isnt helping and he’s hitting a lot of balls on the ground. However, he is hitting the same LD % that he hit when he was killing the ball for Peoria.
