@Grey: Heck! If I had that much money to spend on players, I wouldn't need to be a good manager. I could just buy all the best players and let my assistant coaches do the managing. I would only need to do the essentials: mostly arguing with the umpires and getting ejected.

@Grey: No – but I’d love to. Not actually a big horse racing man, but it’s a huge sporting occasion and I’m always up for those.

BTW European horses have featured prominently in some of your big turf races like the Breeders Cup Turf and Arlington Million. So the internet says, anyway.

@Grey: They do, but European, US and Australasian horses do tend to stick to their own turf, as it were. It’s an expensive and complex business flying thoroughbred horses round the world.

That said, there is always a decent contingent of European horses at the Melbourne Cup each year now.

The US seems to be a bit of a world of its own – perhaps because the big races like the Derby are run on dirt (for want of a better word) whereas races here and in Europe are run on turf and the horses can’t handle the different tracks. I also wonder if it’s hard for a non-US horse to qualify for the Derby.
