Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

When you drafted John Lackey and/or Ervin Santana in your fantasy baseball leagues, you probably didn’t know that you weren’t going to see either of them until the middle of May.  Last year, Lackey suffered from a strained triceps (I think that’s near the biceps — I should’ve been a doctor!) and returned to solid results.  In 163 1/3 innings, he had a 3.75 ERA and 130 Ks.  In the abbreviated 1st half, he had a 2.47 ERA and 1.80 and 1.16 in May and June, respectively.  But in the 2nd half, he had a 4.99 ERA.  Red flag, right?  Not entirely.  He gave up more home runs than his career rate and there’s no reason to think he should give up that many homers again.  However, he’s not getting guys to swing and miss like he used to.  So a better 2nd half, but he’s not a 2.47 ERA pitcher for the whole year either.  Think 3.50/1.22 and 10 wins in 20+ starts.  Then there’s Ervin Santana.  He showed up on the risky pitchers list and promptly went down with an elbow injury.  This was probably due to being overworked last year.  The last two months of rest probably did his arm good, but he’s still a risky proposition.  He’s much more of an unknown on how he’ll bounce back this year.  If he returns with solid results in the first couple of starts, I’d try to flip him for a different piece unless you’re strapped for pitchers.  Don’t sell him for fiddy cents on the dollar.  Anyway, here’s what else we saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

Johan Santana – Mets have given him 9 runs of support in 7 starts.  They’ve also given up 4 unearned runs in those games.  Maybe he can start a support group with Dan Haren.

Carlos Delgado – Out a couple games with a nagging hip injury.  No fear – the Mets have…Fernando Tatis?  What does Omar Minaya do all winter?  Can you think of another team that doesn’t have a backup 1B on the roster or in AAA that is better than Fernando Tatis?  The Mets should trade for Kila Ka’aihue in the hopes he can be their lucky Hawaiian buddha like Benny Agbayani was.

Matt LaPorta – Seems to only be playing against lefties.  Makes him very difficult to own in mixed leagues.

Carl Pavano – Pavano is back from 3 1/2 years on the Disliked List to put up a 3-3 record for the Indians.  With a 6.45 ERA and 1.54 WHIP, consider Mike Mussina and Razzball unconvinced.

Ryan Zimmerman – 4-for-5, 2 HRs yesterday.  I talked him up in the preseason then didn’t get him in one draft.  Very frustrating.

Jay Bruce – 13 runs for the Reds.  0-for-5 for Bruce.  Ticker tease!

Adam Rosales – 3-for-5, HR yesterday, batting .295 for the year.  He’s filled in for me for Aramis in one very deep league and it’s worked out pretty well thus far.

Felipe Lopez – 3-for-4 with a homer.  You would think he was in an 0-for-100 slump with how many questions I get about whether he’s any good to own.  He’s a 2nd baseman going 20/20 and currently batting .323.

Justin Upton – Hit his 7th homer yesterday.  He’s breaking out.  Conor Jackson is breaking out too.  With chicken pox or shingles or something.

Derrek Lee – The bulging disk in his neck was ruled not career threatening.  His hitting on the other hand….

Derek Lowe – 5-1 with a 3.80 ERA.  The ERA is about where you expect it.  The Wins are a bit fluky.  Watching him pitch is like watching an artist mow his lawn.

Jhonny Peralta and Alexei Ramirez – 4-for-9 with 5 RBIs.  Rejoicing for everyone who just picked them up on the cheap.  Grumblings of “About fhuxeing time” for those that have had them since draft day.

Lastings Milledge – Suffered a broken finger in Triple A.  Luckily, he’s got a backup from when the Nats gave him the finger earlier this year.

Do you really believe in Phillipe A. Lopez that much? I’m just not buying it man. Career .260 hitter who has hit double-digit HRs one time in a crazy outlier year that just SCREAMS Yaz usage.

  4. anoraxx says:

The problem with Felipe is that he is at the leadoff spot on the sucky D-Backs offence. Thus, his .323 BA is going down the toilet. Imagine what stats he would have playing for, say, Rangers team. Kinsler Lite Edition it is. That´s kinda frustrating for me as a proud owner of Felipe´s to realize such thing.

I mean seriously what´s wrong with Arizona? They have such potential, possibly the best top three pitchers in the league, rock solid closer and solid hitting order which is not living up to its potential. Sad.

    @Felipe Lopez

I’m also not buying he will hit 20 HR, he did that once in the great american ball park. Thats it. Nothing more than a few more or less crappy seasons. I would guess him about 10 HR, 15-20 SB and a pretty bad Avg.

Yesterday someone offered me Lopez for JJ Hardy, mentioning what a good trade this would be for me. I didn’t even think about that.

Other question. Who will be the better player at the end of the season. Adam Jones or Nelson Cruz? Depends on what you need right? Or is there a big difference?

I was watching the Tribe/White Sox game last night and WOW does Alexie look HORRIBLE at the plate. Sure he got two RBI’s on the night and ONE hit, but one of his RBI’s was a Fielders choice, and the other was a single after he was down 0-2 swinging at totally crap pitches in the dirt from Pavano. Is Pavano that nasty? HA! I know the guy is a “free swinger” but now i know why he’s batting .200. I will say he was absolutely robbed of a double and 2 more RBI’s by Derosa. Alexie hit a shot down the left line in which Derosa said “not so fast my friend” layed out, snagged it, and threw all the way across the diamond to thwart Alexie’s confidence a little more. A-ram did have a smile on his face. I think its coming. He knows he can’t buy a hit right now, but they’re gonna start falling….

obviously i’m an alexie owner, HA! just dealt for him tho so i haven’t been suffering like some of you that drafted him!

I say he’s still free swinging, not in a good way, but the dudes drilling the ball when he’s hitting it, just catching some bad luck, good things are coming….

  8. Tony says:
    (link)

@Bob from Germany: I’m curious to what some think of adam jones as well. I’m thinking about offering a guy Matt Holliday for Adam jones/Broxton?

Is that a good return on Holliday or am I selling low. The dudes frustrating the heck outta me. I mean i’m trying to wait it out, and I know he might get traded to a contender, but ughhh…. if i could get a solid offensive piece that has some risk and a CLOSER?

  9. ScoutAbout says:
    (link)

Just picked up Alexie off of the waiver wire in my league and I have Peralta. Rollins’ owner has offered me a trade that wasn’t great for me, but I countered with something fair and more to my liking, so we’ll see. I figure at some point this season they’ll all be firing on all cylinders and I’ll have a couple of great pieces to use in a trade to upgrade in other areas (probably SP).

Hey Grey – When I saw that Milledge broke his finger I thought it might have just been cramped up from giving it to the Big club for not calling him to check in on how he was doing.

Derrek Lee – He now gets to stay as a bulging aging disk. Damn I hate those misdraft choices. I am sure if I just had an extra 15 seconds I would have said, No, not Derrek – Carlos, Carlos!!!

Justin is making up for Derreck – sortof

Regarding D. Lee, how does a guy go from needing a few days off because of a sore neck, to needing an examination that deems that the condition isn’t career threatening? That’s a pretty dynamic jump in health condition. Why doesn’t he make things easier for his owners and miss the rest of the season to get the metal disc placed in his neck ala Chris Duncan?

How would you rate these possible spot starters for this evening on a scale 1-5, 1 meaning no chance in blue hell would i start them and 5 meaning pretty confident in a quality start.

Parra @ Home vs the Fish

Masterson @ LAA vs Jered Weaver

I really wanna plug n play Parra because I think he can miss some bats tonight and post a solid K total, the thing stopping me is that I can see him at 95 pitches in the 5th inning with walks and command issues off-setting those K’s.

I mentioned yesterday I picked up Bourn and Spilborghs last week and plan to platoon them one of my UTL spots with Bourn going versus RHP and Spilly vs LHP, do you think this is wise?

@Tony: @Bob from Germany: I’ll wager some Euros that Jones goes 15/10/290 the rest of the season and Cruz goes 25/10/280. I’d bet that they both get about the same amount of runs, but Cruz has about a 25 RBI advantage. Huge edge to Cruz.

  21. Ben says:

Quick question: how much better do you expect a backup 1B to be? I’m certainly no fan of what Minaya failed to do this winter, but Tatis is more than capable of being a backup 1B – hell, have you looked at his stats over the past two years? Name for me a NL team who actually has a decidedly better 1B backup than Tatis.

  22. Jobu says:
    (link)

    @Tony B.:

Parra and Masterson are both a 3. Could go either way, but probably won’t get rocked. And like you said, Parra will get some Ks. I wish I had noticed that matchup last night because I would have spotted him.

How ’bout the Unit with another 5 beautiful innings and then a stink bomb when they brought him out for the 6th, after their 30 min + big inning. Unit got cranky out on the bases!

Reynolds with another bomb. The Davis/Reynols two-headed goliath is starting to round into form.

  23. Jobu says:
    (link)

@Tony: I’d deny that trade if I had Jones/Broxton. I mean, I’m down with the SAGNOF mantra, but Broxton is just filthy right now and Jones is breaking out like most people thought he would. If you actually received that offer, I’d take it and run.

  24. @anoraxx:

The offense seems to be waking up. Stephen Drew will be back soon, Eric Byrnes is hot, Upton is hot…If they can find someone to hit cleanup they will be a decent offense. Comparing them to the Rangers isnt really fair…

@PJTres – I heart Zimmerman, and have been waiting five years for his coming of age, but he is not in the same class as Longoria, who is a future H.O.F. candidate.

@Grey/@jsp2014 – Benny Agbayani! Great memories. My fav is when he caught a pop fly with bases loaded, thought this was the third out, gave the ball to a kid in the stands, but when he realized that there were only two outs, took the ball back and tried to throw the runners out. But seriously, I don’t think that Tatis is the joke that you portray him as. He played solidly last year when he came in for other Met injuries, and was even a fantasy sensation for almost a month. If you want to see what a putrid bench you can buy for 200 mill plus, check out the Yankees. For 6 weeks the Yanks had a combination of Cody Ransom, Ramiro Pena, and Manuel Barroa sub for AROD at 3rd base. Their backup catcher, Jose Molina, is a life-time sub Mendoza hitter; now that he is on the DL as well as the aging Posada, the position is manned by Francesco Cervilli and Kevin Cash. And their MR is woeful. While the Red Sox bring up one flame thrower after another from the minors, the Yanks bring up Tomko.

Santana – led the league last year in losing games to blown bullpen collapses. Now the Mets don’t hit for him. Pelfrey is 4-0 and pitching on the wrong side of mediocre. Even your boy Cla (without the Y) Merideth has as many wins as Johann. Now I see why you hate wins.

Derrick Lee – suffering, like Maggs, from PSSS (Post-Steroidal Suck Syndrome). As you mentioned yesterday, Eric Gagne has the most virulent case of all.

I have Lopez on three teams, as per your advice, and I have no complaints. Especially in Yahoo, where he is qualified to play almost every known position, as well as sell dirty water dogs on the side. I gave Jhonny with the silent H one more week, remembering last year, when he went on a tear after a very long slump. Not so different from J.J. Hardly.

    Lastings Milledge – Ha!

    Great roundup, as usual

  28. Paulie Allnuts

    Paulie Allnuts says:

@NoonTime – I would rather be on the Teixiera/Halladay end of the second trade. Longoria is awesome, but Tex will heat up in Yankee stadium, will have AROD for protection, and put up amazing numbers. And Guthrie is perilously close to being FA fodder.

  29. Tony says:
    (link)

@NoonTime: I’d rather have the Jones/Lee/Nathan side hands down, and the TEX/Halladay side wins big too…. The position eligibility is nice from Longo, but not worth losing two elite players for one and Guthrienuts….

  30. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:
    (link)

@NoonTime: First one seems fair. Second one, I like the Halladay/Tex side.

@Ben: It’s true that Tatis is decent, but Minaya has a blindspot for decent back-ups. Everyone’s blamed the bullpen (with justification) for the Mets’ double-cacks of recent years, but Minaya also does things like sign 42-year-old outfielders, then have no one to replace them when they shockingly miss 1/3 of the season.

See also Cashman, Brian. The Yanks have an atrocious bench. Why is a guy like Ryan Garko languishing in Cleveland, when he’d be a great spare part on either NY team?

@anoraxx: Don’t you feel like Zona would benefit from some kind of steady-but-unspectacular veteran bat in the middle of the lineup? Like a Jermaine Dye type? Or Thome? Someone? For all their vaunted offensive talent, there’s not a single hitter that really scares you.

Maybe they need a new hitting coach. Calling Cito Gaston!

@Paulie Allnuts: Right now, Felipe is my Super Sub. On a quiet day yesterday I started him at Util; he responded with 3/4, 2R and a donk.

He’s been a perfect fill-in for Alexei’s dead weeks. Plus, going forward, I’m happy to know I have a great plug-in if/when one of my MI starters goes down…

@Grey: I feel you on the Jay Bruce ticker-tease. Luckily, Votto and Phillips got in on that action. But I thought for sure there was a Bruce donk in that sauce.

@Grey/hivemind: Anyone feeling a Zito spot-start against the Nats tomorrow? I have a dead roster spot (Beimel) and wouldn’t mind outsmarting myself. Or I could just give in to the dark side and stash Tommy Hanson. Mmmmm-bop!

    2b. alexi
    3b. arod
    ss. theriot
    of. quentin

    closers – bell/hoffman/street/gregg DL RYan

giving up to much? fair trade?

  32. ichirosan says:
    (link)

@PJTres – Zimmerman’s injuries should be enough for anyone to stay away from him.

  33. @Ben: Hmm, fair point. Tatis was quite good last year AND he did it against righties (vs. feasting off lefties). Wouldn’t bet on a repeat but duly noted. Also looked at backup 1Bs and there are some bad ones (http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/teams/depth-chart/STL). Perhaps it’s just that some teams have that guy who could play 1B or OF that you want to give 300 ABs anyway. Examples in NL:

    Chicago – Micah Hoffpauir
Colorado – Ian Stewart (ok, it’s Garrett Atkins but he just moves across diamond so Stewart is the ‘add’)
Arizona – Josh Whitesell/Tony Clark (yikes, I might pass on this one)
Padres – Kyle Blanks (280 lb minor leaguer being converted to OF – that should be fun…in PETCO!)
    Phillies – Matt Stairs
Pirates – Steven Pearce (depth chart says Hinske but I think they call him up if LaRoche Sr. gets LaHurt)
    St. Louis – Chris Duncan
Washington – Justin Maxwell/Lastings Milledge (because Dunn moves to 1B and these guys slot into OF)

  34. And, BTW, I wouldn’t trade Longoria. I still think he ends up at .270 but, man, I wish he was on one of my teams. Too much upside to pass up. Zimmerman doesn’t have the same upside – at least in terms of power – maybe Zimmerman gets to 28 and Longoria could get to 40…

As for Zimmerman, he now does have some support in the line-up (Dunn and a healthy Johnson). He will cool off just like Berkman and Hamilton did last year, no one stays on that pace. @Teef: A leaguemate had the entires Dodgers’ outfield as his starters until Manny went down. On one of my teams I have the heart of the Brewers with Fielder, Hardy, and Hart. When it works its great, its almost like double points. When they have a bad game it really, really hurts. I’m beginning to think having three bats from the same team is one over the limit.

@Dom: – an actual Nationals Fan! That’s an exciting find, equivelant to a bird watcher coming across a rare avian specimen! But seriously, the Nats hitting is much better then previously, but this fact is hidden due to the utter incompetancy of their pitching staff. When Lannan is your ace, and Hanrahahahahan is your best closer option, you are in a bad way. I doubt that the Nats will come up with enough money for Strassburg, and would likely be better off trading his rights to a team like the Bosox, who have a plethora of pitching prospects at their disposal, and the money to sign Strazz.

@p0rk burn – At times, having fantasy players from your own team can be somewhat detrimental, as it is hard to be objective concerning them. My RCL team now is bereft of Mets, although to be honest, I wouldn’t say no to Reyes, Beltran, Wright or Santana. But when I looked my team over, I did discover that I have 4 Mariners. I don’t know what’s up with that – maybe this has something to do with the fact that i am wallowing in 8th place!

Rich Hill might get the call at the end of the week. I added him in yahoo now and stashed him on the DL. If he can show, he’s ready i will activate him. If not: See ya!

At least i have more confidence in him than in the D-Train….

god, that reminds me of my first fantasy baseball season last year, in which i had both of them BB-Machines. That was a fun…. for everyone else….

@Tony – Actually, no – I am a Mets fan. I certainly wouldn’t mind Strazz pitching next to Johan, but I don’t think that the Mets have what it takes to get his rights. The Mets have a soft underbelly – they have a number of incredible players, surrounded by mediocrity, and don’t hat the type of pitching prospects that the Nats should want in that type of deal. Unless the Nats want to take a package deal of prior Nats , the Mets could give back Livan Hernandez, Brian Schneider, and Ryan Church for the pleasure of dealing with Scott Boras.

Okay, in an answer to all “What should I offer for Manny?” or “What should I trade Manny for?” questions, hardballtimes wrote a pretty decent article in which they prorated his stats over the rest of the year and showed similar players that could put those stats up (i.e. Werth, Peralta, Bradley, CJack, etc.). Here it is:

    http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/fantasy/article/whats-fair-value-for-manny/

One shortcoming of this article is that they didn’t account for the stats you’ll also get from a replacement player while Manny’s out, so…

    Manny: 15 HR/50 RBI/43 R/1 SB/.299 avg. (roughly half his projection)
Kendry Morales (or some other Shlub): 10 HR/28RBI/24 RBI/.280 avg

    Mandry Ramorales: 25 HR/78 RBI/67 R/.291 in like 450 abs
    prorate to 550 abs: 31 HR/95 RBI/82 R/.291

These are damn useful fantasy stats. Granted you have to waste a roster spot to keep Manny on your team till he plays again, so I would trade someone whose stats are lower than that. Also, realize there’s upside in these numbers if you get a fillin better than Kendry (in some leagues that might be doable). Those numbers seem much like what you expected from Vlad or Dye. They also look a fair bit better than Rios’ stats, since someone asked. Overall, this doesn’t really tell you to buy or sell, but it does give you an idea of price.

@cubbies299 – Very interesting post. I just made a trade, giving Puhols for Santana/Manny. I was winning just about all of the hitting cats and losing the pitching cats, so i needed to make a change. But i think that there is a big difference in trading Manny in a H2H at Yahoo, then in, say our Commenter Leagues. H2H has a much larger bench, and two DL slots, so you can keep a player on the bench for long periods and not even notice his presence – sort of what i have been doing with Big Pappi. But in our RCL league, you only have one or two bench spots to play with, especially if you only have more then one player on the DL. Having a completely non-productive player for 50 games in this setting is not something that i would want to deal with. Her that, ALCOHOLIC?

@IowaCubs: I should probably make a daily installment on here called “The Attendant Diary – my stories as a minor league clubhouse guy”

You’re story today deals with former starter/reliever/roider/ etc, Jorge Sosa. I ran into him on 3 occasions last year during the PCL season, two times when he was with Round Rock and the 3rd time, 2 weeks after that with Tacoma. This guy I think has been banned 1 or 2 times for the violating the MLB’s banned substance policy for amphetamines. The third occasion was most memorable because he spoke very little english and was adamant

I activate his brand new cellphone. He gave me a number to call that would give me “mucho info”, mucho info turned out to be his social security and other pertinent information from his passport. The number I called ended up being his accountant giving me this info to activate his phone and a direct order from her to “shred all this info” once I completed the phone activation.

Thank God Verizon has an easy step by step robotic voice process to activate phones as I was able to complete this task in about 15 minutes. I was rewarded by Mr. Sosa with some monetary funds.

The funny part of the story comes 10 seconds after this transaction as a phone rings and Sosa pulls another phone out of his pocket and answers it, Felipe Paulino has the locker next to him and realizes what is going on and tells me, “yo man, you just activated his “beef phone” for while he’s in town”, that’s his wife on the other phone right now back in the Dominican. That’s today’s installment of the diary. Enjoy.

    @cubbies299:
Victorino is a dude. I actually had withdrawl trading him just recently. He puts up in every category.

@cubbies299: I’d want Drew there, but I think you can get him cheaper.

@Grey: I thought you were all “stick a fork in Kazmir… he done” in the buy section last week.

@cubbies299: Yeah, but everyone else still likes him and they’re not crazy about Drew.

@Grey: actually, everyone was quoting that fangraphs article when i tried shopping him. Honestly, I’d rather be rid of the damaged goods. Drew’s hurt right now, but he’s coming back and will soon prove his worth. Kazmir is just looking worse with every start

Now, if this is a keeper league, and I have Price in my minors (and I can keep him there indefinitely). Should I trade Price for Drew instead of Kazmir for Drew?

@cubbies299: Well, if your league is informed, then I’d prefer Drew to Kazmir as I said above.

@Grey: Sweet, sry to keep bothering you. Which of these would you most want to unload for him? Kazmir/Price (in minors)/Chris B Young

Is Adam Jones the steal of the draft to this point?

Of course I didn’t start him, as I seem to make the wrong choice more often than not, but Jurrjens .. man, the dude is hot.

Would JD “yes, I’m injured” Drew be a good replacement for either Corey Hart or Mike Cameron (util)? He’s a FA

Well I don’t know what to expect from the rest of the week now. Fielder, Jones, and now Ian Stewart have each hit 2 HR today for me. Makes having C. Davis on the bench hurt a lot less.

Somone PLEASE tell me why Zimmermann can’t get people out with the stuff he has? He’s been pitching like ass since his debut and now he can’t even get the losers on the Giants out.

For the love of God Braves would you please call up Tommy Hanson already so I can have a REAL fkn pitcher on my team? K thanks.

Votto reportedly just felt dizzy, hopefully from the flu he’s been fighting.

  172. aconstipatedmonkey says:

@Colin: Zimmermann’s not pitching bad, per se, but if he’s not striking guys out, the Nats slow ass defense is not gonna help him. He could have gotten out of the 4th inning earlier if it wasn’t for Bumblehands Guzman.
