Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Coming to the Braves outfield this summer, Jordan Schafer — The outfielder to have when you’re drafting more than one.  I picked him up immediately in my sucky fantasy baseball league.  He sounds blahtastic! Maybe 10/15/.250 aka every outfielder that sits on waivers all year that has one good game and you contemplate picking up until you think better of it.  Some have compared Schafer to Sizemore, but he’s much greener.  Though he does know his way around striking out.  He’s jumping straight from Double-A where he K’d 88 times in 297 ABs.  CHONE and ZiPS project averages near .240.  He may turn into a Sizemore, but for 2009 he’s more of a Sighsmore <– pun!  He’s worth a flier in an NL-Only league.  But then again, so is Cha-Seung Baek.  Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in spring training for fantasy baseball:

Dexter Fowler – Razzball was abuzz yesterday with the news Fowler might make the team.  He really should, and Helton should retire so Ian Stewart can play, but whatever.  Fowler is the total package like Lex Luger.  He can run, mash and had the opportunity to go to Harvard.  He could go 12/30 and hit .285.  Then he’s a 30/30 guy in a year or two.  Keeper leagues should be all over him.  I have Spilborghs on a few teams, but I’d happily move on from him to see Fowler get the chance.  I grabbed Fowler in my Spilborghs leagues for backup until this shakes out.  I’ll drop whoever doesn’t get the job.  Fowler or Maybin? I still want Maybin for now, because Maybin is assured time, i.e., the Marlins play their prospects.  If Helton was on the Marlins, he would already be DH for an AL team.

Joey Devine – Aching Joey Devine is having a real hard time staying healthy.  Looks like Ziegler will start the year as the A’s closer.  He could hold the job for a while depending on effectiveness and Devine’s injury-prone-itude (Made Up Word Of The Day!).

Alexei Ramirez – Was hurt sliding into home, but didn’t seem too serious from the latest news I heard.  Now ease back on the hustle, Alexei.  You’re going to give me a heart attack.  Everyone’s calling you an Alfonso Soriano clone, but there’s no need replicate his injury-prone-itude.  Please don’t turn into this year’s bust.  Please.  I’m begging you now.

James McDonald – Some of you noobs (I called you a noob! Natch!) are going to think it’s Christmas in March, but I wrote a James McDonald sleeper post already.  How’s dem apples?  Delicious, I know.

Dustin McGowan – Jays unsure of his return.  Hey, that makes two of us!

Travis Hafner – Hit first homer of spring and he’s batting .227.  Good to see he’s rounding into mid-season form.

DeWayne Wise/Chris Getz – White Sox one and two hitters?  Alexei batting 8th?  Fields 9th?  Somebody, please help him!  Ozzie Guillen’s gone crazy!

Jason Motte – LaRussa said Motte would see some save chances.  Way to clear that up!  I think Franklin still gets involved in this mess.

J.D. Drew – Will bat fifth for the Sawx.  I think people underrate Drew.  He’s not a bad 4th to 5th outfielder.

David Purcey – I’m not buying into his solid spring training numbers.  I call shenanigans.

B.J. Ryan – Gaston’s talking about using Downs for some saves, but reading between the lines tells me he might just be goading Ryan to man up.  Either way, Downs is the handcuff you want as a Ryan owner.

David Delucci – Sticking with the newly-established David theme, David Delucci goes to the DL.  Lates, Double D.  Ben Francisco and Shin-Soo Choo just got a bump — not a Studio 54 bump.

Emilio Bonifacio – Could be leading off for Florida.  Or Maybin.  Or Hanley.  Or Amezaga when he’s healthy.  I doubt Bonifacio sticks in leadoff, but SAGNOF.  I also really hope to one day see Alfredo Amezaga and Emilio Bonifacio in an Olive Garden commercial.  Now that’s Italian!

The BJ Ryan situation reeks of Chad Cordero last year. Once again left out in the cold by one of my better RPs. I think I will just quit drafting them all together.

I, for one, don’t care if Ryan throws 78 MPH as long as he gets people out. Coming off of Tommy John, maybe he just needs more time to stretch out his arm and get loose before he can let her rip.

From Rotoworld: Phillies pitching coach Rich Dubee hinted Monday that Cole Hamels (elbow) might not make his regular season debut until April 10. “There’s a good chance he won’t pitch Opening Day,” Dubee said. “It’s a very, very, very small shot, if at all. But saying that isn’t saying he can’t pitch the fourth game of the season and not miss a start.” Hamels will pitch Tuesday, as previously reported, but Dubee wants him to fit in at least two additional starts before the Phillies begin playing games that count. That won’t be possible if he’s slated to start on Opening Day, April 5. Mar. 23 – 9:02 pm et

Devine is making me sick and Motte splitting saves I guess could work for me if he can keep his ERA/WHIP as low as it’s been during spring training. Jenks is my only solid closer with Hanrahan having a job but he is on a losing squad

I guess my best bet is to just wait for the start of the season and jump on a closer when some schmohawk shines

@Emporers Monkey: I agree. BJ smells suspiciously done to me. Arm injury + surgery + loss of velocity = something that will drag on for months and next thing you know this is why some guys finish their careers with only 100 saves or so.

Everyone go get Downs now. Everyone must get Downs.

Plus, there is no way Ramirez bats 8th. What is it Ozzie and batting orders? Hey, Nick Swisher — you’re leading off! AJ — you’re hitting second! Guy whose actually good — grab some pine!

Grey: Have you factor in the fact that Ryan Franklin is a turd sandwich? RYAN FRANKLIN! As Colossus of the X Men would say as Magneto sent painful electricity coursing through him: GYYYAAARRGGGHHHH!!

Also, not to be a mad rumor-monger/doomsayer, but here’s this from the NY Post:

“Scouts who have watched [Joba] Chamberlain this spring are puzzled with his lack of velocity. In his last outing against the Phillies, the fastball was clocked between 88 and 92 mph. He labored so much that one scout wondered if Chamberlain was healthy, or concerned that a shoulder problem that landed him on the DL last year was going to resurface. ”

  13. Hardcore Midget says:

With the news on Fowler, is he worth stashing on my bench for now in a keeper league?
I have two bench spots, and already have Mat Gamel and Colby Rasmus taking them up. Do I drop one of these guys for Fowler?

  14. BigFatHippo says:

@Baron Von Vulturewins: Can’t Who’s on first, unless you prefer Wes Helms there.

  16. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:
    (link)

@BigFatHippo: I do prefer Helms, but that’s just because I have him on my Razzball team.

  17. @Hardcore Midget: Depends on your keeper league rules. If you can pick up a FA during the year and still keep him, I’d consider dropping Gamel for Fowler only b/c I’m not sure when/where Gamel will play. He’s in a long line of Brewer 3Bs that can’t play 3B. They already have two ex-3Bs in the OF (Hart, Braun) and moved one back from the OF (Hall). They talk about him taking Fielder’s spot but when is that? So I’d go with Fowler (in Colorado!)

@Tony: I like Murphy on the Mets more than Fowler. Better chance of playing time.

@BigFatHippo: I don’t buy Bonifacio lasting the year at 3B. Not b/c of Dallas McWhifferson but because they could move Cantu from 1B to 3B and put in a bigger bat for 1B. How could you go from Mike Jacobs to Bonifacio? Not that Jacobs is good but where is the slugging on that team? Is Cody Ross hitting 5th?

@Tony: Try Josh Kinney instead. Might get a save or two for STL.

  20. BigFatHippo says:
    (link)

@Rudy Gamble: I agree,he’s only interesting because of SAGNOF. The only benefit I see to him starting the season at 3B is more PT when he spells Uggla and they slide Cantu back to third.

As for Kinney, LaRussa more likely to use him in the Russ Springer role from last year, ie. stranding inherited runners.

Otherwise, I guess his life can provide the tragic version of Mr. 3000.

  27. Anthony G says:

I like the analyis on Fowler. I think i may scoop him up if he gets the job. Who will benefit the most from Sheffield being cut? I say Marcus Thames! He murders the ball and it would be nice to see what he could do with full time at bats.

  28. Zebo says:
    (link)

@Grey: What do you make of Alexi Casilla’s big spring? Going back to yesterday’s waiver claim column, I didn’t want to spend my waiver on Casilla, so someone else claimed him, and I ended up with Asdrubal Cabrera. Someone dropped Wieters, should I put in a claim on him? Who do I drop for Wieters out of these:

Fred Lewis, Kelvim Escobar, Jeremy Guthrie?

  29. I love the idea of Sheff being stuck on 499 because no one wants to pay him.

He can go play pinochle with Bonds, Frank Thomas and Sammy Sosa, all of whom are roiders who have been spurned. Maybe a tour of the glue factory…

  30. @Tony: Hawpe, Spils, and Seth Smith are the starting three. I’ve heard talk Ian Stewart will get time in LF as well (him and Smith are both lefties so not sure how that would work). Podesdnik is hanging around too. So Fowler is competing with Spills and Pods for CF time/pinch running. Fowler is a switch hitter vs. Spils being a righty so he might get his playing time against righties but the only way I see Fowler getting enough playing time to be mixed league valuable is if they trade either Spils or Hawpe…

  31. BSA says:
    (link)

    Grey,
As a Sawx fan it has been hard to watch him. Defensively he plays a great line to the ball with ease. Offensively, the swing is beautiful and he sprays the ball all over. Yet, there is nothing more F’in annoying thn watching him stand there with a 3-2 count with his bat on the shoulder because “it wasn’t his pitch”.

Oh yeah and if the hyperbarric chamber he has in he clubhouse breaks down then you lose him off your roster for a few weeks as he gets his back in shape.

  34. Jon says:
    (link)

I’m thinking Gaby Sanchez at 1st, and Cantu at 3rd. McPherson waiting for a Sanchez failure, or maybe a platoon over there.

Both McPherson and Sanchez are a little banged up, so maybe Bonifacio gets a little time at the beginning of the season, but there’s no way his bat plays at 3rd. There are many better options, and I know that without even knowing who they are. Ha.

Bonifacio is a long-term utility man. MAYBE a platoon 2B or something.

@Zebo: Now, now, you’re the savviest. But who’s your catcher? But I’m thinking you should drop Guthrie for him.

@RT: Big value. He’s who you want when you’re faced with Crapolanco. Could steal 25.

  43. @Jon: i’m hoping on 400 AB for Seth Smith as I have him in an NL league but there are so many OF candidates (Stewart, Fowler, Pods, Murton, Carlos Gonzalez) that I’d probably take 350 as the over/under. Not a bad guy to take an early season flier on for a 12 team mixed league but be prepared to cut bait if he has a slow start.

  44. RT says:

@RT: About time you rejoined the chorus.

@Zebo: Sure, drop Guthrie for him. Then when you can move Escobar to the DL, grab Guthrie back up.

  49. If Emilio Bonifacio is getting the start to the season I’d think it’s in his hands to lose. Maybe regardless of Cantu or Gaby Sanchez. If he’s playing well at 3rd and capable leadoff, I think he gets 450 abs.

    - Funny how Lex Luger referred to himself as ‘the Total Package’ when he couldn’t even reverse a standing wrist lock.

    – Against my instincts, I kept Brad Ziegler for 2009 after Grey advised (a couple of weeks back) that Joey Devine’s health issues would lead to Ziegler retaining the closer job for the A’s. I’ve officially added Grey to my list of people who deserve the title of ‘Expert’. Rudy’s included on that list as well.

    Matthew Berry is not.

    Neither is Brad Evans….

    – Ozzie Guillen’s proposed batting order leads me to believe that he took up peyote as a hobby during the off-season… Or drank the worm at the bottom of his tequila bottle.

    – This B.J. Ryan story reminds me of the way the Jays handled…. err….. B.J. Ryan.

    – Re: Emilio Bonifacio: I don’t think I want him on my team, but I have to admit, I wish my name was Emilio Bonifacio. Speaking of that, at my first fantasy baseball auction in 1996, I threw out the name of a fictional Latin American short-stop by the name of Jesus Jalepenos. To my surprise, the bidding went up to $3 before I had to disclose my tomfoolery.

“…and while the initial role might be backup spots, outfielder Dexter Fowler and third baseman Ian Stewart will be on hand for the Rockies season opener at Arizona next Monday.”

I have Spilborghs/Snider as OF5 in 2 OBP leagues right now. Drop Rasmus in one and Gardner in the other to stash Fowler? I have a feeling someone will pick Fowler up within the next few days.

Regarding Devine going to Dr. Freeze, I’m thinking Casilla will make for a nice late-round AL-only pick. Nice grab on Ziegler in yours, Grey.

My team is terrible with BA, strikes out a ton, and has the SB and Save market pretty well cornered. I’m considering any of these:

    Give up Upton for Markakis
Give up Upton, A-Gonz, and Brian Wilson for Morneau, Markakis, maybe Parra or Maine as a throw in
    Give up Weeks for Johnson.

The last one seems like a sure thing, since I dont need the steals, and even if i did, doesn’t Burriss hit for higher AVG then Weeks?

  70. Luke says:

My friends, I would like the steals that wonderboy Manny Burriss will bring my team if I were to pick him up. I will have two open roster spots when I can dump some guys on the DL in a few days but until then I suppose I should drop somebody since Burriss might get snatched.

The choices are: Ian Stewart, Swisher, Teahen, David Murphy, John Lannan.

    Thanks much.

thats true, matsui just hit waivers at second base, it just seems like the pre-season is usually the most value you can get for weeks. Do either of the other two seem like they make much sense at all? I’d still have SB coming from Sizemore, Kinsler, Victorino, Werth, and Fe. Lopez. I just don’t see how I can fix this team’s average without something drastic like either Upton deal.

    Price just hit Wavier Wire?

Drop Meche for him? Weaver? Do nothing and let someone else worry about him in his first full season should he get called up.

@Steve: Join in the fun! Here, I’ll do some introductions…

@d2bnz: Hey, do you know, Steve? He’s from New Zealand.

Uehara may get by for a little while b/c hitters will be unfamiliar with him, but it won’t last. His stuff’s kinda blah.

@Josh: Upton can hit as many HRs as Markakis.

    @cockyphoenix: Who? Alfredo Simon? He’s pure crizz-ap.

  81. Zebo says:

@Grey: David Price was just dropped. I have shoppach at catcher. Should I drop Guthrie for Price ahead of dropping him for Wieters?

  82. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@BKK: Let someone else take care of him if those are your options.

    @Zebo: Go Price.

@Grey: I agree, though given I have Weiters on my bench, I’m more than happy for some safe and steady replacement level play at catcher for a month or so. You know, before Weiters comes to the majors in a flaming chariot.

@Grey: I’ve been Dramatized by Rudy raising his voice at me in an earlier post, I am not able to eat on my own. H2H Points League. Choose my bench, would you drop anyone from the list below for anyone on my “scout team” that follows:
Bench: B. Wood, Teahen, Lind, Daniel Murphy, Spilborghs, J. Upton, S. Baker, Buccholz, Kuroda, Maholm, Pelfrey (did you just chuckle?), Percival
Scout: Teagarden (R. Hernandez, Olivo, and Wieters my catchers) Betemit, C. Duncan, Ishikawa, Ransom, Bonifacio, Getz, Josh Fields, Burriss, Fowler, C. Ross, Hermida, David Murphy, A. Cook, Davies, Guthrie, Anthony Reyes, C. Villanueva, Wellemeyer, Corpas.
Okay take a breather and let me know.

Im not sure what to do with Ryan. Do I keep him or drop him for Ziegler, Lyon, Villanueva, or Downs?
    thanks in advance

@Juice: Rudy told me you showed up at his intramural basketball game and you guys worked it out over some arepas afterwards. Think you’re good now.

Wow, you got tidyings of comfort and crap on that bench. How many fifth starters can you carry? Get rid of Buchholz for Villanueva. Lose Pelfrey for Fields, unless you need steals then grab Burriss and lose Teahen.

@G: Why aren’t those guys all owned? Hold Ryan for now. You should be abcking him up with Downs, unless you’re in a 8 team league.

  88. G says:

Which one of those closers is the best then. And who do I drop on my roster…Jimenez, Jurrjens, Kouzmanoff, DeJesus, Weeks, or Justin Upton

  89. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@G: Those guys are all droppable? Why do you have so many hitters on your bench? Drop DeJesus for Ziegler.

  90. BKK says:
    (link)

    Smith, Hermida or Gardner

On a separate note, with all the action in Florida, does Hermida still occupy the 2 hole or does he move down to 6?

  91. vinko says:
    (link)

Hate to be repetitive, but Corpas or Street? Seems like they both have decent value either way, no?

  92. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @BKK: Gardner.

Hermida’s probably in the 6 to start.

@vinko: My gut says Street will close when healthy.

    Jaffa

@Grey: Who do I drop for Gardner:

Headley, JD Drew, Fred Lewis, Jack Cust, Jeremy Hermida

Man my outfield is uggly. It’s making my eyes bleed just looking at it!

How are closers like Ziegler or Lyon available in any leagues? Thats ridiculous

  100. RichC says:
    (link)

Grey, I waited until late in the draft to grab closers. I have Ryan, Francisco, and Bell. Just picked up Morrow the other day based on his proclamation he is going to the bullpen. Today, both Downs and Motte were picked up. I still have a chance to grab Ziegler.

Drop Ryan for Ziegler? My bench is Bruce, Figgins, Damon, Hardy and Sandoval. My 5th starter is Slowey. Drop any of these guys to get Ziegler, or just sit and wait it out with Ryan?

Nick…. People sometimes overlook players , when my paid league opens up next week there is going to be one almighty charge to grab Kevin Gregg

  103. Grey

@RichC: Great work waiting until late and grabbing some good closers. I’d like to see Ziegler on your team too, but I’d wait it out with Ryan for now.

  104. BKK says:

@Grey: Done. Was my instinct but I was having trouble parting with his 30HR potential. Mind you I won’t miss his .234 BA. Gardner puts me in good shape SB wise and assuming he can maintain his .300 average from AAA.

  105. Hey Grey –

Manny Parra, Kelvim Escobar & Jordan Zimmermann.

    Pick two.

    Thanks!

  106. Grey

    Grey says:

@SaltyBiscuits: Parra and Escobar. I’d like to put Escobar on the DL and have all three though.

I just dropped David DeJesus for Zeigler. I still have 3 batters on the bench. So is it better to have bench pitchers or batters?

Jimenez, Weaver, Jonathan Sanchez, Parra, Garza

Iight thanks how would you rate my starting pitchers in 2 of my leagues. There both 12 teams

23 roster spot league- Beckett, Felix Hernandez, Wainwright, Garza, Jurrjens and Jimenez

21 roster spot league- Beckett, Shields, Cain, Slowey, Jurrjens.
are they both solid just wondering what my strengths and weaknesses will be in the 4 sp pitching categories

  111. Grey

    Grey says:

@G: I like both staffs. Very solid in Ks. You might have some WHIP and ERA issues, but nothing terrible.

Ryan Braun left Tuesday’s game in the second inning with an undisclosed injury.

I couldn’t make this shit up even if I tried.

Looks like I better be prepared to get 300-400 at bats this year from this cotton ball.
