Ryan Madson has to have Tommy John surgery. Luckily, he signed with a Dusty Baker-managed team as the trainers have a lot of experience diagnosing busted arms. Sean Marshall will likely take over the closing gig, spurring indie comedy fans in Cincy to bring Sean Of The Red signs to games. Best case scenario: Marshall goes the whole season with the job, continues to rack up a 9+ K-rate and 40+ saves. Most realistic scenario: Dusty brings Marshall into the ninth inning of a tie game and, as the two teams battle scoreless inning after scoreless inning, Marshall stays in the game for another 16 innings and throws 450 pitches. 125 of those pitches he kicks over the plate Hacky Sack-style because his arm is too tired. Then Masset and Aroldis end up getting 5-7 saves each and Marshall ends the year with 30+ saves and an ERA around 3.50. Most likely scenario involving dolphins: Marshall falls asleep on a raft and wakes in Barbados. With the phone lines down due to a tropical storm, he befriends the local innkeeper, Teronimo, who teaches him how to surf. But Teronimo has a hidden secret — Marshall is really his nephew that his brother asked him to watch over. When Teronimo reveals his secret, there’s a giant rift between Marshall and Teronimo that is only assuaged by the sight of dolphins. No matter the scenario, grab Sean Marshall immediately. You might’ve just lucked into a top tier closer for free. Anyway, here’s what else I saw in spring training for 2012 fantasy baseball:
Drew Storen – Could start the year on the DL. Davey Johnson made that announcement minutes after he said Storen had no structural issues with his elbow, which came a day after he said Storen needed an MRI, which was minutes after Storen said he couldn’t throw, which can mere moments after he was diagnosed with strep throat. Following? Yeah, neither do I. I’m beginning to think some ball clubs need a new HMO. Johnson said Clippard would not see saves, but the team would turn to Henry Rodriguez or Brad Lidge. I’d pick them up in reverse order for saves. When in doubt, go with the guy with experience. And no one has experience blowing leads quite like Lidge. “Nats Fall Off the Lidge” is already written on a Post-It on some copy editor’s desk just waiting to go to press. In one league where our innings max is small and our needs for Ks is tall — she says she likes the ocean — we went with Rodriguez. He averages 98 MPH with his fastball and has a 9+ K-rate. If he can keep his walks in check, he could be this year’s huge middle reliever breakout.
Bobby Jenks – Arrested for a DUI. He’s signed a contract with Hanna Barbera for the rights to his name as animated onomatopoeia when a cartoon character crashes a car. Barney, “Fred, Watch out!” JENKS!
Joba Chamberlain – Dislocated his ankle reportedly playing on a trampoline. It was an inevitable outcome of his failed appeasement policy when he ceded playing in the Bouncyland region of Chuck E. Cheesoslovakia.
Joakim Soria – Will undergo Tommy John surgery. Feel free to drop him, we won’t see him until thirteen after twenty.
Chris Carpenter – Updating the previous 17 posts I’ve done on Carpenter, he has nerve issues in his shoulder. Not good news, as if you needed me to tell you. I wouldn’t have drafted Carpenter before this news. Guess how I feel about him about him now. 73? That’s your guess? That’s terrible. Get Lance Lynn in NL-Only and deeper mixed leagues, I’m guessing Carpenter won’t be back for a while. When he dealt with this similar problem in 2008, he threw 15 innings that year. No, I didn’t forget a zero. That’s fifteen. We may even see Shelby Miller by June, if Lynn can’t cut it, though I think Lynn can. Here’s what I said earlier this preseason, “Out of the bullpen last year, Lynn’s fastball regularly touched the high-90?s as he put up a 2.22 ERA and 32 Ks in 24 1/3 IP. As a starter, he was much less exciting (5.23 ERA, 8 Ks), but like a man who needs prunes that was in limited duty (10 1/3 IP). From his minor league track record, we see a guy who has a 7+ K-rate and moderate control. There’s a chance for some sweet, sweet upside here.” And that’s me quoting me!
Trevor Bauer – Was optioned down to Double-A and Uncle Barry Enright was optioned to Triple-A. Rusty Ryal and Chris Jakubauskas were assigned to their minor league camp. You think Chris Jakubauskas ever misspells his own name?
Jamie Moyer – The 49-year-old will make the Rockies rotation. For now, he’ll put on hold his quest to make the World Bingo Tour.
Mark Trumbo – On Saturday, the Sciosciapath said, “We feel (Trumbo) has the potential to be a terrific third baseman.” Then he started laughing uncontrollably.
Chipper Jones – Glass Chipper tore his meniscus announcing his retirement.
Matt Thornton – White Sox announced there’s a five man race for the closer role – Santiago, Ohman, Thornton, Reed and Crain. Kinda sounds like the race to be the Republican presidential candidate. I think right now the chances are Thornton at 80%, Crain at 10% and the field is at 10%.
Chase Utley – Said he’ll miss Opening Day but expects to play this year. Have things gotten so bad that in March Utley is saying he’s going to play this year? He has to clarify at some point in the next six months he’s going to be ready? Yesterday, I said I wouldn’t draft him until around pick 150. I may have been optimistic there. Probably would wait another 50 picks and hope we saw him for about 80 games this year.
Anthony Rizzo – Optioned to the minors. Will probably see him back in June. Until then, Rizzo will be tearing up Triple-A and making prank calls, jerky.
Logan Morrison – May not be ready for Opening Day. He said, “I think the knee is going to tell me. The knee is going to tell everyone. I can’t tell it what to do.” Reading this reminded me of when the ref would lift Hulk Hogan’s arm twice, then Hogan waved a finger up the final time like his finger had a mind of its own. Let’s pray Morrison’s knee waves to the crowd the third time it’s raised. I’m having serious concerns though, and I wouldn’t draft him at this point unless he fell at least four rounds. It’s way too early in the year for this much concern about a surgically-repaired knee.
Bud Norris – Left Friday’s game with tightness in his triceps. He was on Rudy’s risky pitchers for 2012 fantasy baseball list. The only player on the Astros with more sliders in their diet is Carlos Lee.
Travis Snider – Optioned to the minors, and Eric Thames will play left field. I gave Thames some nice projections over at the top 60 outfielders for 2012 fantasy baseball, saying something like he has power upside. And that’s me paraphrasing me!
Doug Fister – Left Friday’s game with a sore middle finger. Fister has a sore middle finger? Are you thinking what I’m thinking? Yup, probably tendinitis.
Ted Lilly – Has neck stiffness. Maybe he got a Viagra stuck in his throat. Will probably miss at least one start, wouldn’t be surprised if he missed two or three starts.
Mike Morse – Might make it back for Opening Day after all, even after his platelet rich plasma injection, which sounds like a procedure a real housewife of Beverly Hills would get.
Matt Bush – Arrested for DUI after hitting a 72-year-old motorcyclist. The motorcyclist’s 95-year-old mother responded, “I told you motorcycles are dangerous.”

I new ur Fist-her joke wud be gr8 & U did NOT disepoint! Good goin Greyson! b home for dinner at 5 .
When are the Reds going to stop ****ing around and start Aroldis. I haven’t keep him since he rode a shark half way across the pacific from Cuba just to see him be treated like a third world import as a RP.
@Chris J,
lol .
pacify yourself .
I grabbed utley with my 194th pick. Hoping he plays at least august and September and is on the Dl til then.
@Bourne, If he plays in August, hopefully he can play in September…

@Raja,
That teams is terrible. I can’t tell who you picked between rounds 3 and 13 because after you took Votto and Longoria it looks like you sat out about 10 rounds.
Also its a 10 team league….
@Raja, Team looks really high on speed and low on power… Pitching looks fine…
@Grey, how can you look at Montero, Votto, Uggla, Longoria and Lind and say “low on power”. In fantasy, there is no ‘perfect world’ which is where so many opinions seem to dwell. That said, I enjoy visiting and re-visiting your site often.
@Moose, You have four guys out of nine that may not break 20 homers…
@Grey, wow so much drama for my team! First mattkrae comes along and says it just looks straight up terrible, then Grey says I’m low on power and high on speed (there’s a joke there somewhere…), finally Moose disagrees with Grey saying my power is a plenty! I’ll say I think my OF is pretty weak on power but I do believe Votto, Uggla, Evan, and Lind should make up for that, combining for about 135 HR.
Just drafted my cash league team and I don’t think I crapped the bed too bad. Standard Yahoo 10 team roto with .OPS added for offense and an extra OF spot. Had 9th pick. Round picked in patantheses.

Wasn’t planning on taking 1st basemen with my first 2 picks, but when Adrian Gonzalez fell that far I felt there was too much value to pass up. I am also contemplating trying to trade Ike Davis for a SS and using Tabata in my Util spot since I may be a bit light on SB’s. Any ideas, suggestions, thoughts, prayers?
@EmporersMonkey, is 9th and 12th pick really falling that far? Your league is shallow enough you can ride hot mi instead of trading. Get your speed that way.
@Bourne, In an OPS league getting Adrian Gonzalez at 12th pick is quite valuable.
Grey, who would be the best option?
Dickey, Nolasco, Bailey, Matusz, Peavy, Stauffer, Niese, Cecil, Milone…
Thanks.

@Awesomus Maximus, I found it pretty funny.

@Nick, I meant to hit reply to VinWins post.
S1W was hilarious last week, tell me you’ve seen it. Glad PRAS is finally done.
Had my one draft on Saturday. People were buying MIs like they were Cabbage Patch Kids (most teams have more than the required 3, and one guy bought 4 SSs and 2 2Bs), and SP was equally ridiculous (I got Fielder for $27… 5 SPs went for $31-39).

I know… I potentially have zero saves. Hopefully the injuries continue and I can grab some SAGNOF off waivers. Oh, and I could have taken Tabata instead of Presley, but then I wouldn’t have the SS/UTIL combo of Elvis Presley! I’ll consider changing my team name to “Memphis Flash” if Presley breaks out in April.
@Awesomus Maximus, Didn’t he retire once before from the Challenge? I enjoy how the contestants all make like TJ comes up with the stupid shizz they have to do… Team looks pretty stacked, nice late round flyers, and love that Lidge is now showing up on teams… Memphis Flash — ha!
@Grey, Oh, are you talking MTV Challenge? Mark? Doesn’t ring a bell, but I’m pretty sure I’ve missed a Challenge or two, and I’ve missed many an episode over the years, so maybe.
I was asking about Survivor. I won’t say anything in case you still haven’t seen it yet.
Oh yeah, as a fellow passive Yankee fan I think you’ll get a good laugh at some of these fanny picks from my draft:
$40 – Robinson Cano
$33 – Mark Teixeira
$31 – Curtis Granderson
$29 – CC Sabathia
$28 – Alex Rodriguez
@Awesomus Maximus, Major fanny picks there… Crazy on Cano… Oh, S1W! Right, my bad… Yeah, I saw it… I thought it was interesting that the producers merged them again so quickly. My thinking is they thought the meanest special ed teacher int he world would be gone too easily if they didn’t merge and they like her for TV purposes… I was kinda sad to see Colton go, he made for good TV…
@Grey, Colton was a good villain, and they always make for great entertainment. It was funny to see him go out like a whiny, spoiled bitch, though.
But forget all that… Kat was friggin’ hilarious! Did you see her looking over everyone, figuring out how she can avoid catching appendicitis? And before the reward challenge when they were guessing off of the clue, “as a kid you used to play this in your backyard” her guess was Tic-Tac-Toe? And before that when she was rambling on about Alicia killing her in a dream? She may be the dumbest person to ever play the game.
Speaking of the reward challenge… did you ever stand on a raised platform and bounce coconuts off of a trampoline into buckets? Is that a popular kids game that I somehow missed out on?
@Awesomus Maximus, HA! Yeah, that’s right, that’s not a popular kid’s game in this country, but in Tonga, it’s huge… Kat’s awesome, and beautiful, and dumb as rocks. She’s kinda perfect.
@Grey, Yeah… I admitted to my wife when we were watching Kat’s awe-inspiring stupidity that I think I’m in love with her.
Just had my primary league draft: 12 team mixed H2H (35 IP min/wk). Hitter categories = standard 5 + K’s and OPS. Pitcher categories = standard 5 + K/BB. Keep seven players as long as you want. Thoughts? I might need a catcher (will try to do a 2-1 trade, then pick up Doumit), but otherwise, I feel fine with it.

@tphilips, Should clarify a couple things:
(1) If it helps, imagine the team without Milone or Uehara, but with Doumit (that’s who I’ll drop if I can’t do a 2:1).
(2) CarGo is LF/CF/RF eligible, so CarLee is just keeping things warm til Harper or Trout comes up (though iCarLee dominates K’s for hitters…if you can dominate something like that).
(3) Adam Lind is no great shakes, but he’s still only 28. Who knew? Thought that guy was like 33.
@tphilips, Team looks very solid, I knew Lind was only 28, it’s in my rankings… Trout’s not coming up any time soon, Harper will though…
@Grey, gracias, thanks much.
Grey, with closers hitting the DL and uncertainty with who has the job, would that make you jump any of the more secure guys up the draft board? Or is it all SAGNOF all the time?
@exactly, this is not more injuries than usual. Grey accounts for it with sagnof
Grey- If Trumbo gains 3B eligibility- where does that move his draft status up to?
Thanks,
Alex
@Old Rungo, The Angels said he might get 40 games at 3rd, where else is he playing? All over the field for 60 games? Okay, he’s still missing 60 games… So he’s not moving up…
Grey awsome man, really, i couldnt stop laughing. That part about how Dusty handles his pitchers cracked me up big time, and its true. Thanks
@Moscowitz, Thanks!
Grey, had my 10 team 5×5 Roto draft last night. We keep 7 with no time limit. I think I did pretty well. I drafted more bench bats than normal because the pitching is a plenty in this league. Gonna D/L Howard and grab Dirty Sanchez.

Haha hoping I can catch lightning in a bottle with one of these pitchers and ship them off to upgrade my line up.
@Eric, Your hitting looks a little low on power and high on speed, your pitching is good, probably too good for 14 team H2H…
@Grey, Haha good enough to ship off Cliff Lee or just move Latos/Morrow/Ubaldo?
@Eric, Depends what you’re getting… Lee is probably the only one with trade value…
That opener was classic.
@AdamH, Thanks!
@Grey, when will there be a closer named Jesus? Has there been and I missed that? On the topic of saves… do you still like Jansen to pick up a good number of saves in LA or is Guerra their guy? Also, what are your thoughts on Pestano in Cleveland – will he take over the closer role at some point in 12 after 20?
@Jesus Saves, Ha! Jansen should end up getting more saves than Guerra by the end of the year, right now Guerra is the man… Yeah, Pestano will at some point…
Is it worth picking up Parmelee right now? What is his upside?
@Ralph, 15 homers…
Little concerned about LF. Is Presley a better bet than Bonifacio or JD Martinez for that spot. Wouldn’t have to drop any. (15 team, roto 7×7 (OPS and strikeouts)

@Steve, Dude don’t mean to barge in but thats a SICK lineup- Braun, Giancarlo, J-Up, Reyes AND Longo? Honestly can’t see how that’s possible in a 10 teamer: Braun in 1st, Upton 2nd, Longo 3rd?…now this is just getting silly lol
How did you manage to build such a sick offense? Even if its a keeper i’d have thought it was impossible. Fair play though man, you’re gonna kill that league this year- solid staff too- well jealous (emoticon). I know Grey’s strategies are good but not THIS good lol.
@TheNewGuy, thanks bro, my league went pitcher happy in the first couple rounds so I was able to get a nice lineup, I just hope my pitching is strong enough there are some stacked pitching staffs
@Steve, Sheesh yeah there must be some stacked staffs…you’re gonna kill the hitting cats though, I mean smash them.
So let me guess, you got your stud bats in this order? Braun – round 1, Longo -2, J Upton -3 (friggin awesome), Reyes – 4, Stanton -5 , Cruz- 6, Uggla-7, Konerko-8
3 first round bats not to mention absurdly good values on Stanton, and Konerko…holy shizz man, killer offense. Any chance of a link to see the draft results in your league? Would love to see how you managed this.
@TheNewGuy, ill put the link here not sure if youre going to be able to see it http://10203246518.baseball.cbssports.com/draft/results
If not it was Braun, Longo, Upton, Reyes, Stanton, Uggla, Konerko didnt get Cruz until the 10th round hahaha
@Steve, Yeah doesn’t let me see it on CBS…no worries. Cruz in the 10th!? Were these guys playing on the moon or something?? (emoticon).
Pitching must be so highly valued in your league, man I’d love to play in a league like this. Look forward to hearing you brag to Grey throughout the season about how much you’re beating your opponents by! All you need is to win saves each week too and you’ll beat every opponent you come across.
@Steve, Wow, it’s crazy how similar your staff is to a team I drafted yesterday. Sub in Garza and Niese for Hanson and Chacin and our starters are identical. I also have Longo, Stanton, and Lind on that team too. I guess the razz strategery just seeps into your pores.
As 1 of the 3 (perhaps 4) female readers of this site (LOL), I just have to express how much I LOVE reading the daily updates from Grey. AWESOME! Just as funny as it is factual. I know I could use some closers, and the Starters could use a shot in the arm. Aside from that, how do you think I am sitting?
@Neidecker, I think you’re dead on.. Pitching could be a little troublesome… Hitting looks solid for 16 team… You need Freeman to take a step forward…
So do you like Sean Marshall or Greg Holland better, assuming they both get the closer role? Also, who would you drop in a 12 team 5×5 league with no bench and no set number of starters/relievers: Marshall, Holland or Bud Norris? I have Nathan and Marmol as my other closers. Thanks…

@Euroalien, I agree with what you said about pitching… Your hitting looks like it could be solid but it’s a bit unbalanced, leaning slightly towards speed…
Feeling okay about backing into Utley at pick 171 (11th Rd) in a deep 16-team H2H with Brandon Phillips manning 2B. Hoping Utley comes back and goes on a “Rampage!” like Sterling Archer so I can trade him for a desperately needed frontline starter.

Which MI schmohawk should I take to replace Giovatella’s demoted ass in a deep 14 team league:

I got totally shut out of 1B in my 16 team h2h keeper league. Nothing on waivers, its a super deep league. Should I try to survive on Willington and Robot Jones (or just one of them?) or make a play for Mayberry ? I’d try Duda, but I think his price went up after ST. THanks!
@Sour Stilton, Willington?
How many starts do you think Collmentor has if he’s bad? And if he has 4 good starts out of the first 5, does he build up enough good will for half a season?
Contemplating whether to punt Bauer or not if I need a roster spot for a move. (16 team keeper)

Learned my lesson last year and went heavier on offense this season. Validate me!
@Feeding the Abscess, Team looks solid, but a bit heavy on injury risk in the hitting side…
@Grey, Yeah, I hear you. I drafted my team with that in mind. K-Jo and Espinosa are there to back up Weeks, E5 for Zim/Berkman and I’ll probably drop Bud for another OF – possibly Boesch (I can afford the meh OBP for potential counting stats, and both LF and RF eligibility). League is 6 keepers, but I didn’t draft with keepers in mind. Also has 3 DL slots.
Forgive my giddiness, this is the first acceptable offense I’ve ever drafted. Glad I stuck to my guns and went offense for the first 6 or 7 rounds or however many rounds it was
Starting the day with a reference to an obscure 80′s soap opera my mom used to watch – wow.

Grey, thinking of toying with a different strategy for my fourth league I’m drafting in on Friday. I’m usually the guy who ends up with one of the most balanced teams in the league. I’m sure there’s a catchy name for this strategy, but what I want to do is build a team around Avg, R, SB and pitching. It’s a 10 team 5×5 auction league, so I like my chances of landing the guys I want. It’s a daily league and there’s a 200 start limit. If I could get a team that resembles anything close to the following, how do you like my chances:
Mauer
MYoung
Pedroia
Prado
Aybar
Bonifacio
Altuve
Ellsbury
Maybin
Ichiro
Span
MCabrera
Fowler

@PublicEnemy#1, I think building for steals and average makes no sense…
Grey,
Just drafted in my 12-team mixed. It is a keeper and it has the following settings: HR/R/RBI/NSB/XBH/OBP and K/QS/ERA/(K/BB)/SVHD/WHIP. I tried to draft catered to our settings. I took Santana and Lawrie, who I usually avoid, for keeper reasons. I took a pitcher earlier than usual (Haren) for elite K/BB. I also didn’t take actual closers. Anyway, here’s my team. Thoughts?

@kwadjo, Nope
Wigginton, sorry
Grey I did another 16 team draft, this one a 14 keeper league where i picked out of the 7 hole, how did I do?
(1st 5 picks were Braun, I was targeting Votto but he went 4th, Stanton, Panda, Uggla and Gallardo)
C Ramos (I seem to have him everywhere as I punt C’s til late)
1B Ike Davis (Panda has 1B eligibility too)
2B Uggla, A Hill
SS Dee Gordon
3B Panda, Ian Stewart
OF Braun. Stanton, Bourjos, Cain, Tabata
SP Gallardo, Gio, Latos, Scherzer, H Alvarez, M Minor
RP Betancourt, Broxton, J Johnson, Casillas, Lidge/Rodriguez (last 2 picks)
As I said its a keeper league and no one touched Profar or Machado, so once Lidge implodes I will be dropping him for one of those two to sit on. Thoughts?
@TualatinTwoStep, Team looks low on average, but balanced otherwise… Pitching looks great…
@Grey, thanks man! Yeah I was a little worried I was punting average with this group, but I think I am going to crush it elsewhere. Profar is the guy to snag for 2013, yeah?
Hola Grey -
Nice post.
In my 14 team, 6×6 (ops, holds) league, I drafted 3 young upside SP to fill my bench slots: Bauer, Shelby Miller, Teheran
Would you drop any of them for Tommy Milone? He’s looked nice this preseason and apparently, has made the As rotation and may be the #3 out of the gate.
Rest of my SP staff includes: Gio, Garza, Ubaldo, Scherzer, Bud Norris, Minor, Volquez
Thoughts?
Gracias…
@El Burro, Lose Mille for Milone…
@Grey,
Cool’ thanks…
So, suffice to say that you have a fair amount of confidence in Lance Lynn sticking in Cards rotation? I used him in middle relief toward the end of last year and was fairly pleased….
I am in a 20 team h2h dynasty league. I just got offered Jesus montero Henderson Alvarez and Andrew bailey for my Lester Sano and gamel. Do I consider this deal?

Grey,
Obviously asking something like this before the first regular season pitch is a smidgeon ridiculous, but picking up the breakout pitcher has become one of my favorite fantasy past times. Do you have any hunches on who could be a Latos (of 2010) or a Luebke or D. Hud (neither necessarily ‘broke out’ last year…well, not in the sense of dominating teams. We’re not as privy to any dermatological records) for this season?
@stynyr, would Scherzer count? I wish I had him on more teams.
@Bourne, I think he’s already broken out. I have him as well.

Utley was just dropped in my league last night. I have first waiver priority.
Would it be worth adding Utley if I had to cut ties with either Mike Leake, Carlos Quentin, or Dexter Fowler? I waited on 2B in my draft and still came away with both Kelly Johnson and Jason Kipnis so I’m not bad there. I’m leaning toward adding Utley and cutting Leake. Would you do the same?
@Drexel Hill Dragons, Lose Quentin
I have an open spot on my bench. Who has the most upside: Moreland, Thames, or Gamel?
Thanks
@LobBall, Gamel
Which side would you rather have? Victorino/J Zimmermann or Maybin/Bumgarner?

I am picking third in my snake draft and although I strongly expect either Cabrera or Pujols to fall to me, I want to be prepared if they don’t. I want to grab a top 1B, and am trying to decide between Votto and A.Gonzalez.
I know you have Votto ranked much higher than Gonzalez, but I didn’t know if that changes much when converting to a H2H Points league. For instance, steals are next to worthless for us and power is money. As a comparison, Votto scored 715.7 points last year; Gonzalez scored 738.9.
I guess what I’m asking is, has your gut changed on Gonzalez at all or would you still go with Votto?
Thanks!
@Jake, No one’s played a game, nothing’s changed…
10 team mlb 4×4 league, but everyone’s rosters is unknown because who gets drafted in Vegas, stays in Vegas.
Hey Grey:
Glad to be back. I will admit, once the season ends my thoughts turn to hockey and frankly, I didn’t put the offseason training time in I need to compete. Now I’m doing two-a-days trying to get back in fantasy shape and hoping it isn’t too late. I’ve read every post back to February but like cramming for a mid-term the information is only half sticking. I know I like Zack Cozart and Danny Espinosa to some degree but who do I really want in my MI spot. (That wasn’t a question, it just gives some idea of how un-sharp I am).
First things first…bought you a few daquiris. Well deserved.
Second…the site looks busier than ever with so many new names. Hoping AL and Hippo and Salty are still around contributing. I like the idea of a guest commenter on the weekends. Those Friday posts just get jammed up by Monday.
I had my draft the other night and eh…wasn’t crazy about the outcome. I was stuck in the 12 spot in a 12 teamer and although that can be wonderful when the chips are falling right, I seemed to miss out on my guys by 1-2 slots way too often. Picked Hamilton at #36 for value even though I preferred Bruce and Pence but prayed one would make it back to me at #60 but they went at 57 and 58.
Got my first pitcher (Latos) in round 8 and then kept missing my targets (three guys I like left…I’ll wait) as they’d disappear at the last minute. Gio and Hudson both picked just before I picked in 11 and I panicked and picked the crippled Utley. That pick would have been better spent on Beachy or Leubke (or anyone really). Had a decent last part of the draft but my relievers blow. I’ll post my team in a new post if you don’t mind taking a peek.
@knighttown, Good to have you back either way…Thanks! Sure, no problem…

@Negatto, Out of curiosity, what # pick did you have? I’m drafting tonight and hoping that it goes exactly the same way for the first 4 rounds especially.
@L-Boogie, I had the 4th pick in a 12 team.
My first 10 picks were Votto, Kinsler, McCutchen, Sandoval, Bumgarner, Gallardo, Wieters, Jennings, Gordon, Stubbs.
I probably could have waited on Gordon but we have owners in our league that load up on speed. I was targeting Bruce for my 6th pick but he went in Round 5 and I thought Gallardo was too good a value to pass at that point. Closers were around a long time and I think we have saves still out on the waiver wire.
A good alternative to Rizzo is Brett Weir! Get me Brett Weir!
Of these 3B prospects, who do you think has the biggest fantasy impact this season? Nolan “Ryan” Arenado, Anthony “Red Nads” Rendon, Miguel “Miso” Sano, and Brent “Musburger” Morel.
Am I missing anyone else worthwhile?

1. Really want Myers cause I need a closer and he has SP eligibility. He comes off waivers tomorrow. Do I use my #1 claim to be sure I get him or take my chances he goes unclaimed. Abreau would be the drop since he doesn’t play major league baseball.
2. With Longo, Konerko, Hosmer and Lawrie I might have the CI strength to move someone for a SP. Throw a potential move out there. Or just hold?
@knighttown, 2. Hold… 1. Get Myers…

@Grey, haha good point. I seriously just saw his name on a depth chart and had no ideea who the hell he was. After further research, he seems boretastic.
not buying into matusz either.

To pick up someone, if you need them… Which you don’t right now…
@Grey, Thanks. Last but not least, you once told me you wouldnt pick Holland over Marshall or Balfour but to be honest i dont understand the reason. Holland is right handed and is pitching in a better ball park while Marshall ist left handed and has to keep the ball in that sand box in cinci. Would you mind giving me a brief explanation as of why you think Balfour or Marshall would be better options than Holland?
Holland is not the closer yet.
@Grey, I know but what if he wins the closer job? Would you then take him over Marshall?
Maybe in a month or two…
@Grey, Oh btw, what do you mean by losing Ervin next?! To pick up another closer??
Because you can’t get enough of these: here’s my team! It’s an 11 team 5×5 roto scoring keeper league. The first three rounds were a little wonky due to all the keepers, because guys can’t be kept more than twice (hence Braun being available for me at pick 8). ANYWAY. Round and overall pick in parenthesis. Note that we have a pretty high innings cap in this league, so I tend to overload on starters just to try to keep up with the pitching counting stats.

@Grey,
lol, actually I hate the Yankees, but I couldn’t pass on Jeter as the 12th SS off the board and Swisher has more value in our league’s point system.

@Grey, YTMND! Thanks
@zzzzzz, How is this possible? Are players allowed to be on more than one team?!!
@royce!, Great (and cheap) keepers, bad drafting during auction by league mates, etc.
@zzzzzz, Ahh, the keeper thing explains a lot. Well done. Your team is bonkers. Only issue I can see is that you may have too few saves for a 10 team league, but you can make that up during the season.
Grey hilarious post!!! Just had my draft yadda yadda, and curious what your thoughts are on my squad. 10 teamer, obp league, shallow since we lost 2 managers from last year. I picked 7th:
C- McCann; 1B- Votto; 2B- Kendrick; SS- Aybar; 3B- Longoria; MI- Kel. Johnson; CI- Trumbo; 5OF- Bruce, Hamilton, N. Cruz, D. Jennings, A. Rios; Util- Bourjos; Bench- Utley, Mayberry; SP- Gallardo, MadBum, Beachy, Garza, Gio, Fister; RP- Walden, S. Santos, S. Romo, D. Robertson, F. Salas. Guys went gaga over closers early. I could use one more I guess, but will wait on that SAGNOF. Thanks!
@JJ, Thanks! I think your team looks decent, don’t love some of your flyers, but your league is shallow, you can fix them in season… You’re not gonna be able to play Trumbo, Utley or Mayberry most of the time which would kill you in a shallow league…
Prince Fielder and Josh Hamilton or Albert Pujoles and Pacman Jones? thanks!!
@anon, Fielder

I wasn’t sold on Kotsay joining the Padres until I read how grateful Yonder Alonso has been for Kotsay’s sage advice:
“He’s someone who will come up to me and not beat around the bush — but actually go into the bush.”

The 2012 San Diego Padres: Into the Bush.
@royce!, Ha! Wait, what?
@Grey, All I know is that the MLB AtBat.12 ad on the side of the Padres website reads “Spring Has Sprung.” That’s all I know.
Padres are thinking outside the box for fans… Or maybe that’s inside the box…
@royce!, Maybe Yonder was thinking of Mrs Kotsay when he said that.
@Grey, Love the imagery of a ref picking up and dropping LoMo’s leg a la The Hulkster. Almost got me to blow my morning coffee out my nose.
Looking forward to the Razzball draft tonight. Prepping for the draft is very difficult, since I’m used to looking at good players. Off the top of your head, who’d be your top 10 for the worst of the worst? Who will be this year’s Donkey?
@3FingersBrown, Ha, thanks! Aw, man.. Not sure… I think Dayan Viciedo has really sneaky value… Doesn’t hurt to have corner men from the A’s either…
@3FingersBrown, And corner men from the M’s…
@Grey, Figgy should be pretty valuable, especially if he plays decently enough for them not to just bench him after a crappy first month. Either way, you’ll have at least a month of cellar tier “production.”
@royce!, Yeah, Figgy’s a great pick… If you’ve drafted well, your entire team should be in position to be benched…
@3FingersBrown, Still looking for 2 managers. Everyone who answered my plea actually wanted to be in the RCL.
@VinWins, Oops, that’s not your league.
@VinWins, Sorry Vin, I got my hands full in three leagues this year. Thanks for the offer though.
@Grey, Viciedo is a definite Razzball All-Star in the making. I’m thinking just take the highest K, lowest HR guys from the worst teams and you can’t go wrong.
Thinking about Razzball drafting strategy – With so many lousy middle infielders, I figure it’s smart to take a crappy 1B first. Casey Kotchman’s name immediately comes to mind.
MIs and catchers are a dime a dozen… If you can get a crappy corner man or two, you’re in good shape… Bad pitchers are also abundant…
@3FingersBrown, It’s ok. I wasn’t offering you a spot. I was just warning you that the league was not full, and then I realized you were in the other league drafting tonight.
Someone wants to trade me Ethier for a closer, and I really need another outfielder.What closer would you throw in the deal? I’m leaning towards Marmol.

Cheers to the good work you do.
Your hitting looks pretty stacked, I wouldn’t be that worried about Uggla and Bruce in a H2H league… Reed and Pestano are fine… I like the team overall, well played…

@Grey, completely agree. Didn’t balance the risk well enough with the pitching but if everything breaks right could be a very strong staff.
Is Chris Sale rostrable in a 10 team league? He’s had a rough spring and I have Holland/Broxton on the waiver.
@Melvin Emanuel, I’d hold Sale for now…

Is my pitching too good for my league? Should I trade a pitcher to upgrade my hitting (OF most likely)?
Thanks and love your writing!
@The Mad Hungarian, Team looks higher on speed than power, and your pitching looks much too good… Better than your hitting…
@Grey, You think I should look into flipping a pitcher and outfielder for an outfielder with more pop to balance it out? I’m already a little concerned on my team BA.
@The Mad Hungarian, Sure, get a better outfielder or 2nd baseman…
Grey, little off topic, but question about auction bidding. Say you agree player X is worth $20. Is that the price where you feel you turn a profit buying them? Or should you focus on getting players you feel are worth $20 for less than that, like say $15? I know this sounds academic, but it’s always tough when the bidding gets to say $19, do I really want to be ambivalent and spend $20 to get $20 worth of player?
Prices are good in a vacuum but in actuality it depends on your team on how valuable a player is to you…

Fairly certain that Will Venable didn’t make your Top 300, but I kinda like him as a deep league sleeper especially given the injuries to Carlos Quentin and Kyle Blanks during Spring Training and the fact that Denorfia isnt doing anything…. He seems likely to start the year with a full time gig instead of platooning.
Assuming he gets ~500 ABs — would a line of 65/15/60/30 .255 be within the realm of possibility?
It would… Though a full season of ABs doesn’t seem possible…
@Grey
OK; Just think he’s a talented kid who can produce when given some consistent time. Interestingly, read today that the Braves made an offer for him, which the Pads refused. So, are you thinking he doesnt get the ABs because:
1. …he continues to platoon (presence of Jesus Guzman, Blanks, Denorfia)? Quentin, when healthy again, and Maybin, play everyday leaving 1 spot for 2-3 guys?
2. …cause he’s struggled against LHP
3. …plays in Petco
4… All of the above.

@MJD Took A Knee, Yeah, you can be in the mix, though you are a bit weak on power, speed and average… Your pitching looks okay, if Hanson is fine, which I have my doubts about…
I dropped a couple of guys and picked up some others, yet yahoo is not reflecting the changes when I go to set my lineup. Is anyone experiencing the same problem?
@royce!,
go to next Monday (4/2) if you’re in a H2H “weekly” league…should be there.
@El Burro, That sort of resolves it, insofar as it will allow me to change who I am starting for the week of April 2-8, but I should still be able to change my lineup for this week in order to swap in M’s and A’s.
This is from Yahoo’s announcement regarding the first week scoring periods:
“Leagues that use the Weekly lineup deadline will have two lineups deadlines for Week 1. The first weekly deadline will be on March 27th at 11:59 PM PT. This will cover the Japan games. The second weekly lineup deadline will be on April 1st at 11:59 PM PT. This will cover games played from April 2nd through April 8th.”
Therefore, for week 1′s first lineup (the Japan games), I should be able to change my lineup until 11:59 pm tomorrow. I just added and dropped players based on the assumption that I could do this, and the site will only let me change my lineup for the week starting April 2, which is when I will have wanted to drop these guys.
I’m gonna see if I can get someone on yahoo to resolve this.
@royce!, Now I understand why your asking. Makes sense. Just saw that on my Home Page as well.
Have SP been announced for that series yet, out of curiosity?
@El Burro, Wednesday’s game is Felix Hernandez vs. Brandon McCarthy and Thursday’s game is Jason Vargas vs. TBA.
Actually the A’s announced they are starting Bartolo Colon Thursday.
@Grey
Would love your input on my team. 6×6 with obp and holds added. fairly deep rosters so not much on the wire throughout the year. thanks in advance for the input.

Easily the most injured/injury-prone team I’ve ever drafted. Thoughts/suggestions/ridicule?
Yeah, looks pretty injury prone, but the team doesn’t look bad outside that… Looks well balanced, I like it…
I just used the first waiver priority on Brett Myers. Hope I dont regret that as some guys in my league are supreme idiots. I got Ryan Zimmerman last year off waivers. I need the saves but more importantly, I lurve closers with SP eligibility. Having a 4th closer when everyone else only has 3 is kind of like having a hall pass from the missus.
We likeing Brox or G-Holl for the Royals closer job. I’m holding Holland but could make the switch as Brox is available. I have the market cornered on brain freezes this year. I’m begging for a Donkeycorn.
Preferring Holland, it could go either way…
Stubbs or Boesch and Garza for C.J. Wilson?
Not that crazy about it… But I’d do Boesch first…
The other options are Garza and Stubbs or Boesch for Stanton?
or
Garza and Ackley or Walker for Uggla?
Thanks!
I’d take Stanton or Uggla, but I think anyone would…
Of those Royals relievers in contention for the closer’s job, I’d say Broxton had the best day…

@Steve, Ha, midseason form!
@Grey, I have Broxton in one league, so obviously I’m rooting for him. Then I thought of him trying to close out a one-run lead against the Tigers with Miggy and Prince due up…
12 team 5 player keeper league.
i have the 8th pick. i have 2 4th round picks (41 and 43 overall).
i would love to move up and take king fu panda. he’s one of (the best?) bat on the board. the guy in front of me is in desperate for hitters and a big time giants fan, so if panda didn’t go immediately, i’m 99% positive that he’d take panda at 7.
do i trade my 1st (8) and the 2nd 4th rounder (43) for #2 overall pick?
or should i sit tight, take panda if he’s there, otherwise just wait another round or 2 and take aroid or what several rounds and take aramis and then nab a guy like moustakas or gamel later for some upside?
@ThePoonTycoon, Take Panda if he’s there, otherwise take A-Rod…
Oh good lord. Does anyone else see what I see when I go to ESPN’s MLB homepage?
@Steve, HAHAHAHAHA! Wait, breathing… HA!
@Grey, What pose would you strike?
I know. This one!
http://luxur.blogspot.co.nz/2011/12/most-luxurious-hammock-in-world.html
@Steve, Yes!
@Steve, so, say you’re a little league coach, and Eric Karabell (at age 10, or his current age, for that matter) wants to play, do you:
A) stick him out in right field so he never touches the ball;
B) stick him at 3rd base so he can take one off the chin and go crying home to his mommy; OR
C) there’s no way in hell Karabell has ever Ever EVER attempted to play in any athletic contest, including but not limited to baseball in any way, shape, or form, therefore this is a completely futile exercise.
Grey! Is Bautista worth Sandoval and Lester in a 10-team standard H2H league with 15 keepers? Thanks a ton in advance as always.
@Steve, Imposter!
@Steve, It’s a fair trade… I’d want Bautista…
@Grey, Thanks!
Changing my name now haha
Hey Grey. Been out of the loop on the closers. 5×5 roto, grabbed a slew of RPs after I had to bail out of the last 30 min of the draft. My RPs:
Cordero
Leubke
Betancourt
Santos
FrankFrank
Jansen
Just read your post about Sean Marshall having the gig. He’s on waivers. Drop any of the above for him?
@Kazmere, Good to see you… Lose Jansen for Marshall…
@Grey, thanks! What are you up to now, 4? 5? girl readers? You stud, you… Must be the podcast.
@Kazmere, I think we’re at 4, if we count my mom lurking…
@Grey, You never call!
@Grey’s Mother, Nice shoes, Mrs A,
@Grey’s Mother, Cause all you want is trade advice…
If you’re in an H2H league, you’re obviously wanting to maximise your starts.
Do you grab Vargas for his start in Japan this week (we have a limit of 10 pickups per week).
@Steve, I’d grab him…
@Grey, Safe to drop Crain for him, right?
@Steve, Yup
@ Grey / @ vinko / @ kiwi
i wrote this 2 days ago .
my drafts are over now .
i fall under the scout-type category .
during the season , i will watch , on average , two games per day ,
and rely on what my eyes (and sometimes my heart) tell me .
when it comes to sabermetrics , i understand some of the basic concepts ,
but , honestly , i don’t understand point-shares , and have given up reading those articles .
when it comes to graphs … puh-leeze …. what’s with all the squiggly lines and bell-curves ?
can’t you just explain it , in 250 words , or less ??
having said that , my ‘true’ sleeper for 2012 (and going forward , for those of you in keeper
and dynasty leagues) is ====> Henderson Alvarez .
i’m excited by this kid’s (latin21) talent , composure , and up-side .
i don’t give 2 shizzes of worry that he’s pitching in the AL east …. that which doesn’t kill you ,
only makes you stronger .
my expectations are that , given 25-30 starts , ten , maybe twelve , of them will be of cy young-caliber .
he is my 1st “true” sleeper , and i’m excited by that …. like a fly-fisherman stumbling upon a may-fly hatch .
i’m not as well-read as others , but i’ve not seen his name mentioned anywhere on the inter-webs .
from what i have read , i know that 3fingersbrown is targeting him this year , and someone , under
Grey’s emilio bonifacio post , mentioned that Alvarez would be on all of his teams (and that could have
been 3fingersbrown , again) , but other than Kiwi Steve asking Grey , about 10 days ago , “do you like
this guy (some shit-bum) or Henderson Alvarez ?” , and Grey telling him to go with the shit-bum ,
i’ve not seen his name appear in any article , by any expert , on any site .
nowhere .
so , now that my mystery guy has been revealed , you can laugh , point your fingers at me , provide
any sort of sabermetric reason ‘why’ he’ll be a complete flop … i don’t care .
scoff away .
personally , if i was you , i’d go out and immediately add him to your teams …. just in case my
crazy-azz has stumbled upon something decent and good .
unless you’re playing in one of my leagues , he’s available .
@chata, That’s a pretty good choice, O. I think there’s some smart money on him breaking out this year and he might… His unexciting K-rate and division don’t have me going in on him, but you could be right… Much better than the Jason Bay one who I thought you were gonna say…
@Grey,
you can only imagine how hard it was ,
for me and my big mouth ,
to sit on this , since september .
i’ve never really had a sleeper , before .
and he’ll probably be my last .
@chata, definitely one of your better written comments (and this is a compliement…emoticon). Adding Harry and the Henderson(s) in 3…2…1…
@Wilsonian, I also can’t spell “compliment”…what a jackass.
