I legit have called about half the Diamondbacks’ hitters sleepers this year, but when you venture into pitching territory you best come with your guns blazing like Jon Bon Jovi in Blaze of Glory or don’t’s come at all.  I wanted to call Taijuan Walker a sleeper, and I kinda did when I wrote up his trade post (click his name and you’ll get there, I have faith in you).  I don’t think Greinke will be underrated, I can’t stop looking at Patrick Corbin for the damage he did to my psyche last year — I’m damaged, y’all! — and here’s I am for Robbie Ray, Martha Raye’s illegitimate son with Mark Harris.  When I say Ray, you say ‘don’t play.’  Ready?  Ray!  Don’t play!  Ray!  Don’t play!  Ray Fosse!  Musical starring Jamie Foxx with lyrics by Bob Fosse about a 1970s catcher who was lawnmower’d by Pete Rose!  Damn, you’re good!  Last year, Robbie Ray had an ERA of 4.90.  And, this post is over.  Goodbye!  Holy schnikeballs, what the hell do we want with him?  Or more seguey… So what can we expect from Robbie Ray for 2017 fantasy baseball and what makes him a sleeper?

Well, his previous year ERA should take care of the ‘what makes him a sleeper’ shituation.  2017 rankings will start next Monday and as I go through them all, putting the finishing touches on things (mostly trying to put touches on Giancarlo), I see there’s less than ten starters that will have a K/9 as good as Ray’s in the projections.  At least eight of them are fairly obvious too.  Ray was the big surprise for me, along with one other guy.  The other surprising one… Well, let’s say, if Robbie’s name were Robbie G. Ray, then two of the starters would have the same 2nd half of their names, and I’m not talking Sonny.  The previous was written as a riddle on purpose, at least that’s what I’m telling myself.  There’s a bit of unfortch in all of this for Ray.  His K/9 was great last year too when he had a 4.90 ERA.  Should we write him off?  He’s 25 years old; Max Scherzer wasn’t good until he was 26.  Last year, Ray accumulated all the lavish Ks with a 94+ MPH fastball, a tick up from previous years.  He doesn’t put a lot of pressure on his arm either, throwing that fastball 71% of the time and barely thinking off-speed stuff.  This is mostly due to his inability to locate breaking stuff.  Then the pitches hitters did hit, they hit hard.  He was third worst in the league for Hard Contact Rate, but in front of him on the list was breakout pitcher, Danny Duffy, who also throws hard.  Could it be that if you throw hard, hitters will hit it hard?  Sure, but more accurately, they’ll hit it hard when they expect a pitch, and if Ray throws the fastball so much, people can sit on it.  Don’t want to make this too much about Duffy, but he works with better command.  Ray had a 3.7 BB/9 last year.  Throw enough walks in Chase Field and some will bite you in the ass.  This all sounds negative, but Ray’s had better control in the past.  He doesn’t need a sub-2 BB/9 to be effective.  If he can lower his walk rate to 3.2, it should inform his fastball control and less hard contact.  That, combined with his 11 K/9, and you have a guy that could be a top 20 starter next year.  Fo’realies.  Or is that fo’Raylies?  Hmm…Maybe not.  For 2017, I’ll give Robbie Ray the projections of 13-9/3.67/1.24/226 Ks in 190 IP.  Worst case scenario, you draft him and Jarrod Dyson and name your fantasy team, Robbie & Stealin’.  S’s and g’s make everything better!

    Great article!

    a. getaway day today, so my wife is checking me out every 30 seconds. She’s packing everything and then she gives me the ‘Dirty Harry’ look, like ‘really?, are you still typing away?’. I keep telling her it’s for work so she buys it!

    b. Hope we make it to our final destination. The weather is cold and snowy in Munich.

    c. I just knew that Robbie Ray would follow Michael Pinata ’cause K/9 is a statistical category in fantasy baseball last time I checked!!

    Cheers,
    Ante

Hay grey yesterday you helped me big time to evaluate my startimg rotation today i like to know what Donnerstag you think about my outfield (you remember 16 team dynasty with salary cap)
I will try to rank my players again:
    -betts (18)
    -blackmon (18.5)
    -dahl (0.5)
    -bruce (5)
    -santana (0.5)
    -tapia (0.5)
    -renfroe (0.5)
    -williamsom (0.5)
    -heyward (17.5)
And i can keep upton for 17$
Now my question i like to cut hayward (think he is way to expensive and not helping me at all) and i dont like to keep upton he is to expensive too… but I’m not sure if my young guns are ready to compete for a championship. We have 3 OF spots and 2 UT spots but i think i can put some other hitters in the UT Spots most of the time.
What Do you think about my OF and what Donnerstag you think about hayward and upton ?

      @Saints: *donnerstag=do

      • Copperhead Road says:
        (link)

I@Saints: Do you have German autocorrect? Betts, Blackmon,Dahl,Santana, Renfron, Tapia
Lose Bruce. Upton and Hayward are white noise at this point.

          • Saints says:
            (link)

            @Grey: Yeah I’m a german guy :D
What do you mean “Upton and Hayward are white noise at this point”

        • Copperhead Road says:
          (link)

@Copperhead Road: They are overkill because of what you have and are too pricey for what they give you. Also depends on what you think/know will be in the draft. Maybe you can deal them for a position player you need to fill, especially Upton. You could try to sell someone on Heyward bouncing back but at the price that might be tough.

          • Saints says:
            (link)

            @Copperhead Road:
There will be no Draft i will keep all of them ;) And thats basically it. There is only being one free agency but there will be not many good players to take.

    • Grey

      Grey says:

@Saints: Your ranking looks fine, I wouldn’t touch Heyward or Upton

      • Saints says:
        (link)

        @Grey:
Problem is i already touched them :D :D And i know this was not a good idea. Do you think this young group is good enough (are dahl, tapia, renfroe producing enough to be a starter or backup) to contend for a championship ? Or do you think i shoul look to upgrade it. I think i try to cut loos with hayward and Upton. And try to use the money on other guys like Arrieta.

            @Grey:
No we’re not doing much with waivers (they’re just pretty thin) i will use this corps as my Outfieldgroup. But maybe i drop Upton and Hayward and try to get one more guy in Free agency

                @Grey:
Yeah its a dynasty keeper league you can renew 5 ending contracts every Year. All guys who have no contract are going to free agency and i can bet on them. So i need to finish my roster right now. Thats why I’m asking if the young guns will produce this year and if i need to make my outfield stronger.

Ok thank you for the advice.
Upton and hayward were big busts. Maybe i can try to trade for another outfielder or get one in free agency.

I’m not sure if he’s really a upgrade i think he would be just another guy Whats your thoughts ?

  4. Ralph Lifshitz

    Ralph Lifshitz says:
    (link)

I like Robbie Ray a lot, the one issue as you alluded to is he can’t locate his off-speed stuff, which is actually very similar to yesterday’s sleeper Pineda. They were both in the bottom 10 of breaking ball zone%.

That said Ray’s swinging strike % jumped 2.6% last year to 11.6% which was 13th best in majors between Kenta Maeda and Mad-Bum. Thing is the other two get hitters to chase outside the zone more. So while I’m drafting Ray everywhere, I’m expecting some roofies every 2-3 starts.

    • Cram It says:
      (link)

@Ralph Lifshitz: I fear the roofie. Guys with control issues like this scare the piss out of me. Even if you get a low ERA and K’s in a given outing, the WHIP is usually ugly. I like SP’s boring with a low WHIP. While the rest of the league rides the rollercoaster with the Carlos Rodon’s of the world.

      • Big Odio says:
        (link)

@Cram It: I agree with you for an rcl. In innings leagues it’s harder to give up too many k’s and you might have to absorb all those roofies like a sorority girl on spring break.

        • Cram It says:
          (link)

@Big Odio: Right, tough to hold a guy like that. Much more useful in an IP limit league where you can pick your spots.

      • Ralph Lifshitz

        Ralph Lifshitz says:
        (link)

@Cram It: Truth! The trick with Rodon is to ignore him until August and then add him when’s good for the last two months of the season.

    • Big Odio says:
      (link)

@Ralph Lifshitz: stepping up the game! Well said. Last year rudys bots loved the Ray and I agreed but yeah the roof factor will make him a non play in weekly locks leagues for me

@Grey: He’s no sleeper, but he doesn’t seem to be viewed as the elite guy he is. Would love to grab him as my #2 everywhere.

        Ralph Lifshitz says:

@Grey: Thanks! Todd!!! (not sure if you saw my late reply yesterday, but that f’ing trade for him fell through [the owner said he now thinks he’s a top tier talent so I should give him Kershaw instead of the initially proposed Khris, lol] . . . so now I don’t even own Frazier anywhere haha!)

Do you think I’d be able to snag Dahl around $10 or so in the draft (he’s my “must draft” guy if I don’t keep him)? 12 team mixed. If helpful, Polanco went for $18 in this league last year, and he was a lot more established heading into 2016.

Khris I’m less worried about . . . I love him but my league hates him / must all be related to Chris Davis.

    1. how do you get in if no one knows your real name and
    2.how did you do?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

I was in a few expert leagues… I did awful in Tout Wars, total disaster, came in last, worst I’ve ever done in a league

    • Mantis Toboggan MD says:
      (link)

@Scott: they just need his email likely to get into leagues, and if it’s for money obviously he’s got to pay them. this is like asking stephen king how he was allowed to put out books by richard bachman. as long as king has access to wherever “bachman” gets his payments he’s good.

    Grey,

Pineda and Ray going one apart in current NFBC.

    Which would you draft first?

@JoeT: Pitcher ranks start on monday the 16th

@Big W: actually probably not pitcher ranks… probably something boring to start like Catchers if I know Grey

          Top 10 overall on 16th

Hey Grey – which side do you like (and is it close)?

$33 Rizzo or $23 Votto and $9 Desmond (dynasty +$3/yr salaries)

    Thanks!

      • Duda Want to Build a Snowman? says:
        (link)

@Grey: Ah, he came back wanting Betts ($28) instead of Rizzo unfortunately. Seems to push things in favor of holding Betts.

The Big Mouth’s illegitimate son with Mark Harris? Who knew? Way to dig deep into the bio, Grey. Might have to avoid him despite the K/9; just to escape that disturbing visual. Can hardly wait for the Overall Top 10! Thanks as always, for all of the duly noted sleepers!

Someone will have to tell me whether Robbie Ray is a true sleeper or not, I got to “2017 rankings will start next Monday” & passed out from excitement…

Grey, have you ever written a post about the periphs you use and why?

    • Grey

      Grey says:

I mention them along the way

  17. CMUTimmah says:
    (link)

Manuel Margot + Robbie Ray are a better team name combination…

    Margot Robbie…

You could just name your team Harley Quinn and see if anyone gets it. Or the Wolves of Wall Street’s Wives…. nm… both ideas are terrible.

Anywho… Are you the same gentleman that hated Greinke (rightfully so, apparently) in Arizona? I’m kind of on the “no snakes on this plane” pitching philosophy for next year… Pollock will help the defense, but If Greinke can look pedestrian in AZ, then maybe they should get the pseudo/semi Colorado bump (just not bumped completely off the draft board…)

Speaking of pedestrians, Ray creates a lot of them. His BEST season in the minors with BB/9 was 3.3 (only 58 innings)… but his average was 3.6. Last year he was 3.7 That walk rate isn’t going to change drastically any time soon. His WHIP carried around his minor league average also. I think he’s going to get back to 200 Ks, but at a 4.3 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. Is the juice worth the squeeze?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Greinke is an aging 7 K/9 guy, not same as Ray

  18. “Buxton over Benin”…glad to see you head my warning on Beni’s overblownedness…this also happens to be the title of an especially bad late night Cinemax flick…as expected, many French speaking…large-nippled…house-straightening young women…spoiler alert…attempt to help a young man on a visit to West Africa…with his unbending vision quest to cure his psoriasis by covering him in boob juice…

The large areolae was a spoiler too!

      • @Grey: Just as was reported earlier today by the C I A…there was some successful penetration in some situations…only limited penetration in others…

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

I wanna apologize for earlier, turns out large areolae was in the logline, so not a spoiler

          • @Grey: Also a fairly clear allusion in the title…Skinematically, they are simply logqueues, without them…

    Question on keepers:

I think i’m in the Cram It camp with these type of pitchers. Fastball only guys scare me. They get rocked once people see the fastball a few times and can sit on it. First time thru the order against Ray hitters have a .579 OPS, second time thru they bat .787 and the third time they bat 1.030. He only gave up 3 dongs first time thru. The 2nd and 3rd times thru he gave up 22. He basically hardly ever got out of the 5th. If he refines the breaking ball he could be a stud. Seems like he regressed last year, especially with the late dongs. HR/9 doubled from .6 to 1.2 last year but maybe he was also a little unlucky, FIP was 3.76 vs ERA of 4.9. I’m going to keep an eye on him during spring training and see how the offspeed stuff is developing before i make a decision on him.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Okay, but what if the first time through last year becomes 2nd and 3rd time thru this year because he’s a year more mature?

      • regan says:
        (link)

@Grey: They you got an ace and look like a genius for calling it.

      • Mantis Toboggan MD says:
        (link)

@Grey: umm, i’m not sure on the metric on this one, but i doubt even kershaw’s 2nd and 3rd time through are the same as his 1st, albeit he’s probably the best at this. to be more realistic (and maybe useful) i doubt even any top 20 pitcher’s 3rd time through is really close to his 1st time through.

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

Nah, I was just saying if Ray’s got better, it’s good, doesn’t need to be same as 1st time thru, just closer to

        • regan says:
          (link)

@Mantis Toboggan MD: Just for fun here are Kershaws OPS stats thru the order. .473 .428 .531. Not to shabby.

          • Mantis Toboggan MD says:
            (link)

@regan: i mentioned him as obviously the epitome of best pitcher. interesting he gets better than 2nd time around, but even he gets worse the 3rd (which i’d expect). would be curious as to how say the top 20 SP do in this metric.

  21. Scott Kimmel says:

    Grey,

The bid for Gardner is a 3rd round pick. Right now my OF looks like this:

    Lorenzo Cain
    Rajai Davis
    Granderson
    Carlos Gonzalez (COL)
    McCutchen
    Jose Ramirez
    Trea Turner
    Trout

Should I go up to my 1st round pick (10th overall) to bid on Gardner or let Gardner go?

would you give up Familia to get

    • Scott Kimmel says:

      Grey two questions:

      1) The bid for Gardner currently is a 3rd round pick. Right now my OF looks like this:

      Lorenzo Cain
      Rajai Davis
      Granderson
      Carlos Gonzalez (COL)
      McCutchen
      Jose Ramirez
      Trea Turner
      Trout

Should I go up to my 1st round pick (10th overall) to bid on Gardner or let Gardner go?

      2) would you give up Familia to get Rizzo even though I have A-gon, PUjols, Bird, and Votto, and Posey

      • Grey

        Grey says:

Go to 1st round 2) I’d want Rizzo

Hay Grey what do you think about Votto and Miller the next year and beyond ?
I have a trade offer where i trade them and a bunch of other guys I’m not sure which half i should expect off votto.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Votto’s getting old, wouldn’t expect the 2nd half of last year

      • Saints says:
        (link)

        @Grey:
So you wouldnt trade votto against Miller right ?
        I think the same way.
What about a Tanaka vs. Miller Trade would you do this ?

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

          I’d take Tanaka

  24. Big Odio says:
    (link)

This must be nice, Ralph writes and you get a day off…sorta. You still have Ted and the Cougs to tend to. BTW, I found out a guy in that league you stuck me in last year who writes for Baseball Prospectus lives in Highland Park. and speaking of that league, I brought Halp in as my co-manager so we still have a Razzball affiliate with that squad.

  25. Mordacious Levator says:

i know when your rankings start flowing out, does Rudy’s player rater (with all of it’s nice other stuff than 5X5) start at nearly the same time? obviously his rater constantly updates from all sorts of things as preseason goes on. think from earlier years it’s a bit later (few weeks maybe)

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      Nah, he’s closer to mid-Feb

      • Mobin Can't Hack It says:
        (link)

@Grey: makes sense as it needs at least some playing time reality to be at all useful. i think this year only due to setting up some leagues much earlier than usual (fantrax is year long, don’t have to wait for yahoo/espn to get off their asses) i’m ahead of my usual schedule.
