On today’s podcast, Nick recounts the ups and downs of his journey across ‘Murica.  If Nick was doing this journey to collect a Publisher’s Clearinghouse Sweepstakes, we’d all say he was crazy, Alexander Payne would film it and Bruce Dern would play Nick to great critical acclaim.  In reality, Nick’s doing it for a podcast.  This isn’t crazier?!  Get Payne on the hotline, we got ourselves a sequel to Nebraska!  “So, the year is 2014, and flying cars haven’t yet been invented.  Instead, our lead, everyman, Nick, is in a van and driving from Canada to Arizona to do a podcast over the phone to save on international calling.”  “You know, I was having lunch with James Toback the other day and he was looking for a project.  Can we get Neve Campbell to play Nick in drag?”  “It’s a new direction, but I like it!”  Besides the cross-country shenanigans of Nick and his K-Mart mannequin he dressed up and named Blake, we talk about some players who are off to hot starts — hello, Dee Gordon! — and some players who are currently screwing la pooch — I hate you, Edwin Encarnacion!  Also, mentioned are Adam Eaton, Grady Sizemore, Scott Kazmir, and many, many, many more guys (maybe three more).  Anyway, here’s the Razzball Podcast (now with tales from the road):

Was offered Braun for Springer/Tanaka in a 12team H2H. Would leave me thin at SP. Is it as much of a no brainer as it seems? I do like Springer upside….thanks!

    C – Mesoraco
    1B – Fielder
    2B – Cano
    3B – Longoria
    SS – Segura
    MI – Gyorko
    CI – Rizzo
OF – J. Upton, W. Myers, Alex Gordon, Kubel, Billy Hamilton
    Util – Brantley
    Bench – Rajai Davis

SP – Bailey, Sonny Gray, Masterson, Salazar, Liriano, Porcello
RP – Fernando Rodney, Huston Street, Matt Lindstrom
Bench – Jesse Chavez, Martin Perez (trying to stash some pitching)
DL – Alex Cobb, Wilson Ramos

I’ve managed to draft everyone who’s having a slow start…and now I am in last place.

    1. Who should I drop for Springer? $ to bid with $100 season budget?
    2. Any thoughts on how I could improve? I think my hitting will bounce back, but my pitching is pretty atrocious.

Great blog. Thanks for all the tips, Grey.

Grey, I heard on the radio this question:

Q: How many times has Andrelton Simmons struck out this year?

    A: Zero

Not freakin’ once!! I had to look it up and – dude…not even once. Sick!!

You should know that your podcasts are quickly replacing South Park Cartman episodes as my favorite thing in life.

  17. Will says:

Should I pick up Homer Bailey or leave him on the wire?

Current SP’s – cole, sonny gray, Tehran, Salazar, Cobb

I would drop one of my RP’s. We have a 150 starts limit in this league.

    • Will says:
      (link)

@Will: also, should I continue to hang onto Baez or let him go back on the wire? We have $250 FAAB dollars and Springer went today for $76

      • Grey

        Grey says:
        (link)

        @Will: Sure, hold him

  18. Chris says:

Nice going, guys. Another awful podcast. 10 solid minutes of BS laughing and nonsense, followed by terrible audio that involved muffled voices and echoing. I love you guys but come on, get your “shizz” together. I had to stop listening 15 minutes into the podcast because I feared my ears would start to bleed.

@Grey: oh my jesus that was a wonderful podcast where you hadn’t even yet seen breaking bad and you bring on an actress that also has no link to baseball or fantasy sports in general. beautiful stuff. keep laughing. he loves you guys but when did he listen to a podcast from youse guys that was substantially different than today?

            • Grey

              Grey says:

            • Chris says:
              (link)

@goodfold2: I suppose I should just lie and say it was wonderful then, right goodfold? It’s just some constructive criticism. With the uncontrollable cackling aside, the audio was atrocious. And did we all of a sudden travel back to mid-1940’s Brooklyn? Who says “youse guys” anymore. The audio isn’t always bad. So to answer your quesiton, Al Capone, many times.

              • goodfold2 says:
                (link)

@Chris: i meant the humor was wonderful, not the sound quality, but it was good enough to understand it.

      • Chris says:
        (link)

        @Grey: hahahah…probably true.

  19. JP says:

    Hi Grey,

I just got offered Braun for my Bautista. Should I consider it?

    14 team, H2H Points League

    Thanks!

    • Busher says:
      (link)

@JP: What’s the point in swapping? Both Top 9 OF. Also Grey advised shopping Braun if you can get a good return.

      • JP says:
        (link)

@Busher: I was just thinking Braun’s upside was higher.

  20. Picard56 says:

I have Kershaw and someone just offered me beltre. I feel like I have to pull the trigger. I’d be so sad to see Jershaw go but homie Beltre can rope. What do you think Grey? Am I winning this trade?

  23. King of the North says:
    (link)

Hey Grey, I grabbed Springer a week ago and now have to figure out what to do with him. You mind taking a quick look at my team in a 12 team OBP instead of AVG league…

    C-Castro
    1B- Craig
    2b- Altuve
    SS- Segura
    3B- Seager
    OF- Cargo
    OF- Joey Bats
    OF-Braun
    Util-Puig

    Bench- Springer

    1) Overall thoughts on the lineup? 2) What the hell should I do with my OF? I’m thinking of packaging Braun and Seager OR Braun and Altuve to upgrade there? You think Braun and Seager for Longoria or Braun and Altuve for Cano would be a good idea?

  24. BigRedLatrine says:
    (link)

You dropping Bourjos anywhere Grey? I could switch him out for Lake in my 12 team 5×5 roto. Thoughts?

Stupid Federalist and eventual Taveras promotion are making my trigger finger itchy.

      • BigRedLatrine says:
        (link)

        @Grey:

        Done, thanks!

  25. Hoog says:
    (link)

Hey Grey, I invested heavily in Sonny Gray (per your recommendation ) and now have him in a quality starts keeper league. What do you expect from gray the next 2-3 years? Top 20? Cy Young candidate? What level offensive player would you want for him? I’m getting offers for him but not sure what to make of them…

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @Hoog: Maybe top 20, prolly in the 25-30 range… I’d want a #2 OF or a 2nd tier infielder (think top 75 hitter)

      • Hoog says:
        (link)

@Grey: Solid. Thanks man! That helps a lot.

  26. OaktownSteve says:
    (link)

Jim Johnson looked good in his last two. Recovered the sink on the two seam. Got back on top of the ball. The hook looked good too. Doolittle should not close. Have to be very careful with his match ups. Luke Greg probably closes tonight because he didn’t go yesterday and JJ went two days in a row. But JJ either takes the job back or goes once more clean and takes it back is my guess.

A’s are never out of it. Grind grind grind.

    • Busher says:
      (link)

@OaktownSteve: So we can lose Ryan Cook in most standard leagues?

      • @Busher: Of Cook, Doolittle, and Gregerson I’d hold onto Gregerson the longest. But I agree with OaktownSteve that JJ will be back in the job soon.

Why does it work to demote a guy to middle relief? JJ looked terrible before … I don’t see how “clearing his head” works so well, but that stuff works more often than not.

        • Busher says:
          (link)

@Enrique: I agree, it does seem to work. I understand it more for a young closer without experience though. Haven’t watched JJ much this season, but it makes sense to “clear his head” if his mechanics are all good. If it’s velo, mechanical or a physical issue, he’ll probably continue to struggle.

I’ll lose Cook and hold on Gregerson.

          • Deck says:
            (link)

@Busher: It works because of natural variance. He probably would’ve “fixed his head” in the closer role just as quickly.

            • goodfold2 says:
              (link)

@Deck: yep, but we view it differently.

                • Deck says:
                  (link)

@Deck: Nevermind I got you, thought you said you and I do. Exactly, we attribute it to the switch.

                  • goodfold2 says:
                    (link)

@Deck: you got me, we humans look for certain inflection pts in our cause-effect “patterns” that may or may not exist, but we tend to think they are there since we walked into the problem looking for them.

  27. Steve says:
    (link)

Grey – saw some comments about Braun – and I could use the advice – was offered Shin Soo Choo straight up for him. I know you had/have Choo as a 100/20/20 guy – make the trade? Thanks!

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

I’d want more, but it’s fair

  28. Hi Grey — Is Springer going to be so good I should use the No. 6 waiver priority for him in a 14-team roto league? I’d be dropping Shuck. This league allows up to two FAs to be kept for a 12th-round pick next year, which I guess could be a factor.

In my other league the waiver priority is much lower, so I mightn’t have much of a chance. But I also don’t have such an obvious drop … do you expect Springer to out-perform Melky, Leonys, or Aoki (my worst three OF)? This is a deep redraft league.

And, sorry, but a closer question: I’m a member of the Church of SAGNOF, which is why my closers are Broxton and Santos (incumbents on the way back) and Axford and Lindstrom (horrible). Roster space is tight. But would you give your blessing to dropping any of the above RPs for Cody Allen or Daniel Webb? Or do I need to keep the faith?

    Thanks!

    • Busher says:
      (link)

@Enrique: Grey says he could go 20/20 with potential for more, so yes, definitely. It’s a small price to pay for a player that could help you win a league (for several years if keeper).

How come Springer on waivers? Do call-ups automatically go through waivers?

      • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
        (link)

@Busher: as much of a giant dork who spends large chunks of life huddled around a quick speed computer as myself, i do appreciate the fairness to have a waiver for guys as they come up, IF you have the kind of league where players don’t show up as free agents until they are called up. Of course i don’t agree that one should have a league where superstar prospects aren’t draftable (and thus free agents before they are called up).

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

@Enrique: Yes on Springer, hold your closers

Ok, so 16-team keeper league. I’ve been holding two catchers (even though it’s a one catcher league) and it pains me to do so. Should I finally cut bait on D’Arnaud now that Mesoraco is hitting? Or should I hold and try to deal him. I heard he’s been putting up good at bats but not getting results. With Reyes coming off the DL, I’d have to drop him, Lincecum, or Bastardo.

    ‘Merica.

    F**k yeah!

True story – my friend and I were drinking at his house and felt like some Wendy’s. We were responsible citizens and DID NOT drink and drive to the location down the road. We used two bicycles from his garage instead.

We bob and weave a little on the way but finally get there. The restaurant part is closed so we go to the drive in area. I place my order only to hear this from the guy in the window “I’m sorry sir I can’t serve you as you are not in a vehicle. ” I look down at the bike and say “what do you think this is?” He refuses again. Meanwhile my friend is slowly walking his bike away in defeat.

“NO!” I say. “This is an outrage. My friend and I are riding through America!” I noticed they’d realized I had a British accent so I lamely improvised. I clearly see one of the Wendy’s associates giggling in the background so i defiantly ask to talk to a manager.

A 12 year old appears at the window. At this point I think they just want to get rid of me. He says to my delight “we don’t normally do this, but what would you like to order sir?”

And that is what I think of every time I hear the expression “riding through America. “

      Grey says:
      (link)

      Ha

    • goodfold2 says:
      (link)

@gareth: us american drunks/burnouts whathaveyouse figured out that it’s actually a legal (insurance) matter to not serve non-vehicled persons while in drive throughs. our storys were all funny as well (to some more than others at the time), at least yours ended with food being sold to you. I guarantee near 100% of ours didn’t.

      • Jason says:
        (link)

@goodfold2: You are correct – it is a HUGE liability exposure for drive thru chains and they are ALL explicitly instructed not to serve customers unless they are in a vehicle licensed for travel on public roads. Bicycles do not qualify. Gareth is extremely lucky that after he wrongly objected to being refused service the Wendy’s manager gave in to him and did not call the authorities, which would have been their right to do.

Also, stating that you were being responsible because you rode on bikes instead of driving a car after drinking could not be less accurate. You are still a danger to yourself and others around you if you choose to ride a bike after drinking.

In 6×5 H2H league with OBP and Errors. Picked up Springer. I was punting SB’s, but since I was facing someone weak in SBs I picked up EYJ this week to see if I could grab the category for this week (yes, I’d rather be lucky than good!). With EJY tearing up the bases, I’m now wondering if I’m strong in that area (with Stringer). In any case, I need to drop one the the following to enable me to keep streaming 1 pitching slot: Melky, A. Soriano or EJY. Who do I drop?

I wasn’t high on Anibal this year and expected regression. He was great last year but If you look at his Marlins career as a barometer, none of those seasons really resemble the 2013 Sanchez.

@gareth:i have effectively 1 of 3 aces this year, in every league even resembling a “standard” one. in most i have 2 of these guys. annabell/cobb/liriano. one is hurt now. the other 2 today decided they didn’t want to throw strikes today at all in first inning. after which both were pretty much fine. lots of K’s after that and not too many earned.

I just wrote about him in the last Buy, didn’t I?

      • goodfold2 says:
        (link)

@Grey: it involved really low walk rates and K rates that had gone up, likely the 2nd started by him starting to use a cutter around over 40% (just started doing so last year). actually those weren’t Grey’s words but they may be the cause of his much higher K rate.

    • Jason says:
      (link)

@Fenway Fungus: When you search and and article comes up, click on the article starting with the most recent because it means the player searched for is mentioned in those articles. Just as Grey indicated, in the latest Buy/Sell column, he discussed Chavez.

Man, a team with Pedro Alvarez, Bryce Harper, E5, Josh Hamilton, Nelson Cruz, and Mike Morse – and a dash of Middlebrooks, Jed Lowrie and Arenado and I’m freakin’ second to last in a 12 team league in HRs! Fantasy Baseball you dam-‘ned damsel. Who knew I should have drafted freakin’ Brian Dozier over half of those guys.

@Grey: Have him in H2H. Drafted him almost as an afterthought, as he was the best looking SS left. Was actually hoping for speed, but the power is most welcome.

Imagine what he’ll be like when the weather heats up!

Need help guys, 10 team 5×5:
    Cliff Lee
    Julio Teheran
    Michael Wacha
    Yordano Ventura
    Nate Eovaldi
    Jesse Chavez
    Buccholtz
    Kluber
    Burnett
    Frieri
    Hunter
I am trying to drop Burnett for Lance Lynn. Should I drop Buccholtz for a speculative closer such as Carpetner or Ogando, or do I drop a bench bat in Melky Cabrera, or Arenado. However, I could bench Aoki and go to Melky in OF.

@Grey Speaking of slow starts, I have Jean Segura and I’m getting worried about his slow start. In a dynasty league I’ve been offered Andrelton Simmons + Chris Archer + Marcel Ozuna for Anthony Rizzo. I already have Chris Davis and Buster Posey with 1B eligibility, should I trade Segura away and take the Simmons/Archer/Ozuna for Rizzo offer? Thanks in advance!

    • Grey

    Here is my roster:

    2B: Gyorko
    3B: Longoria
    SS: Everth
    OF: Trout, J. Upton, Werth

so now Puig isn’t even everyday starter, that’s just great for 7th overall pick in NL only. only bright light here is i also have crawford so i’m guaranteed one of them playing everyday (i hope), but lake really better keep playing everyday or this sucks (also venable)

On a bit of a whim the other night I offered my David Ortiz and Gio Gonzalez for Mr. Chris (with a C cause momma didn’t raise no fool) Davis. Incidentally my trade was just accepted about an hour ago. In a 12 team league where the categories are H, R, RBI, HR, SB, BB and W, SV, QS, K ,ERA, and WHIP respectively, my team would look like this after the trade goes through:
    C – Devin Mesoraco
    1B – Paul Goldschmidt
    2B – Chase Utley
    3B – Todd Frazier
    SS – Jonathan Villar
    OF – Carlos Gomez
    OF – Shin-Soo Choo
    OF – Adam Eaton
OF – George Springer (fun fact – the GF had me up pretty late last night and after she fell asleep for some reason I got the urge to check this here fine site and saw Springer was called up so possibly premature thanks are in order)
    UTIL – Chris Davis
    UTIL – Mark Trumbo
    BN – Kyle Seager
    BN – Kolten Wong
    BN – Will Venable

    SP – Homer Bailey
    SP – Shelby Miller
    SP – Chris Archer
    SP – Sonny Gray
    SP – Alex Wood
    RP – Sergio Romo
    RP – Carlos Martinez
    P – Frankie Rodriguez
    P – Travis Wood
    BN – Jesse Chavez
    BN – Nate Eovaldi
    DL – Taijuan Walker
    DL – Hisashi Iwakuma

I’d then have an open roster spot with which I could add one of Edinson Volquez, Sergio Santos or Drew Hutchinson (there’s really nothing appetizing left past that bunch and they’d all be tentative adds anyways till the first of Walker/Iwakuma are back). Do we like this trade? There honestly hasn’t been a trade in this league in a long time and as far as I can remember I’ve never been a part of one (my friends are extremely cautious with trades and tend to only change their rosters at the margins with add/drops) so to say I’m a bit rusty in the trade game isn’t close to adequate.

      Grey says:

Yeha, nice trade for you… Grab Santos…

      • spm7189 says:

@Grey: Yeah at first when I offered it I was thinking “Well this is kinda fair, I mean I drafted Papi with the hope of another .300/30/100 season with a good 70+ BB thrown in and Gio while frustrating at times is still a pretty darn good pitcher” then as the days dragged on with the offer still on the table I’m like “nahh no way he accepts that’s a first rounder he’s sending me for a fourth rounder and a fifth rounder” then as soon as I saw it was accepted tonight I started running worst-case scenarios through my head and just needed a calming influence. It won’t be my first time owning Crush Davis (I’ve owned him in this league every year for the last 3 full years and parts of two seasons before when I was hoping for this kinda power surge) so I’m hoping he rewards my man-love again this season. Side note- how concerned are you with Walker’s rehab setback? Shoulder woes get mighty scary with the young’uns…

        • Grey
