razzball-draft-in-y-roto-arcade-leagueAndy Behrens of Yahoo! Roto Arcade invited Razzball into their 16-team mixed league that they are christening a ‘Pro-Am’ since 9 of the players are fantasy bloggers and 7 are avid players from Fantasy Baseball Cafe boards and Y! Roto Arcade commenters.

Andy posted all the rosters as well as some Q&A over in this post.  It’s a good read.  Some post-draft thoughts:

  • 16-team drafts take FOREVER if you’re picking on one of the ends.  We were 14th.  Luckily, Grey and I tag-teamed it and kept ourselves entertained with a running commentary on the picks.
  • You either have to be a little more flexible in 16 team leagues or be willing to accept bad value.  We ended up following our BRAN Strategy but had to improvise when Peavy and Webb failed to reach us with the 46th pick (3rd round).  We ended up mirroring my FantasyPros911 NL-only draft from a week ago and going Catcher crazy.  McCann was at the top of both our catcher lists and we liked him better than settling for Haren.  We ended up snagging Pablo Sandoval (C-eligible in Y! leagues) in the 8th round as we were incredulous that he was still available (guys like Napoli were coming off the board by the 10th round).
  • These guys were middle infielder crazy:  Furcal in the 4th.  Figgins, Tulo, and Uggla in the 5th.  Cano, Jeter, and Michael Young in the 6th.  You get the idea.  Never thought twice about waiting it out.  Like Kelly Johnson in the 9th round (122nd pick).  Freddy Sanchez (19th round) and Elvis Andrus (20th round) should chip in for AVG and SB respectively.
  • Outfield dries up quick in a league this big.  You know it’s bad when you’re forced to draft Frenchy in the 17th round.  But Beltran/McLouth/Maybin/Lewis are a solid first four and felt Rasmus in round 22 (something like pick #340) is a nice upside play.
  • Not loving our pitching staff.  I like our Shields/Cain/Cueto troika less than my 12-team NL of Volquez/Cain/Scherzer.  I hope Carmona doesn’t make me look bad for championing him in the 16th round.  At least our relief situation is solid with Lidge, Francisco, and Devine (edit: doh!).

From Around The Web

  1. I don’t mind the pitching with the exception of Fausto. Shields is solid enough, Cain should hopefully get luckier and Cueto has great upside. Doesn’t seem bad at all for 16 teams.

of looks fine, did you get any power at the corners,,same in our 12 team league,m.i.`s went early, and 1 guy in our league has v.mart, weiters and soto,

I don’t think it’s so much that I’m sleeping on Fausto, more like an extended nap.

I think he’ll be better than 2008, but closer to 2008 than 2007. He’ll walk less guys, but not get as lucky as he did in 2007.

I like Carmona as a sleeper this year. Not sure, in fact, why everyone soured on him so quickly. I still remember Torii Hunter in ’07 saying Carmona had some of the best pure stuff in the AL. Make the Faustonian Bargain, people!

As the resident Junky Closer Evangelist, I can’t endorse Lidge in the 5th. Would like to have seen some offense there, though Lord only knows what slim pickings were left on the barren plains of a 16-team draft board.

That said, I hope you horsewhip everyone over there, especially the Yahoo! board commenters, who are first-spouting morons. (Every thread starts with five guys shouting “First!” “First!” “First!”)

I do like Mr. Andy Behrens, though, who seems to have a good head on his shoulders and can be counted on for excellent pun-headline references. Anyone who writes “You Shall Know The Reduction In Our Velocity” is fine by me.

Devine in the 13th… were you picking him ahead of any healthy closers? Just curious about how confident you are in his return.

  6. @AL KOHOLIC: We have Fielder, Reynolds, and Kotchman so fine on power for the corners.

@Baron Von Vulturewins: Yeah, we wanted at least one safe closer. Already got f*ed with Devine (draft was before his injury trouble) and Ziegler was picked not too far after.

  7. Nathaniel says:

I like Shields alot too, but I have heard concerns about his innings. Would you do a Delmon Young/Peavy for Pence/Shields? SBN is a category instead of SB’s.

I think the Lidge/Shields turn will end up as your best of the draft. I have to disagree with Baron. In a 16 team league with guys who follows fantasy sports for a living, it should be a lot harder to vulture saves.

Though I do agree with Baron that Behrens is the one guy worth reading at Yahoo. Of course, for every good title by Behrens there’s five pages of awkward alliteration and rhyme crime forced on us by Brad “Where the pun goes to die” Evans.

  11. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

@Griff: I agree about vulturing saves, which is damn near impossible in a deep/knowledgeable league, as I learned all too well in last year’s RCL.

But personally I wouldn’t have paid the Lidge premium, rather I’d have opted for Broxton or Capps a few rounds later. But my brain is hardwired for 12-team, so it’s hard for me to gauge who could/should have gone where.

I used to kind of like Brad Evans, and feebly defend him, but he’s been defeated by the frequency and length of blog-posting. That Erin Brockovich thing was inexcusable. It’s kind of too bad that with all the experts over there at Yahoo!, he’s painted himself into the Mad Punner corner. I mean, they all pun now, so he’s got to be that much more shrill to be heard.

Back to the team… Rudy/Grey, do you have a favorite league-size? I admit my 12-team, while manageable, feels somewhat shallow. I didn’t like the RCl 16-team format, though, which was way too deep.

  12. @Griff: Agreed, I like Behrens best. I don’t personally care for Evans’ style of writing.

@Baron Von Vulturewins: Broxton was high on our list but Capps as top closer. I don’t feel as safe. Plus, ERA/WHIP/K contributions from closers are more important IMO with deeper leagues. You don’t give as many innings to SPs b/c reduced quality. Also, when you draft #14 in a 16 team league, it’s real easy to be on the wrong end of a closer run…(that’s what happened with SPs in the 3rd round)

As for favorite league size, I’m warming to deeper leagues. I think free agents play too big of a role with 10 team leagues. I’d say 12 team is now the minimum i’d want to play for mixed. I’m kind of liking 12 team NL-only too which is the farthest extreme i can see playing.

  13. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@Baron Von Vulturewins: I prefer a 12 team mixed leage. There’s enough depth where you don’t have people wondering if they should pick up Joel Hanarananan, but not too deep where you’re glad Skip Schumaker has outfield eligibility.

  14. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:
    (link)

@Rudy Gamble: The argument for slightly shallower leagues (and more available FAs) is that you can improve your team more dramatically as the season wears on, if you pay attention. In leagues where every prospect down to Single A is rostered, and you’re stuck in third-to-last, it’s really hard to see your way out of the darkness.

@Grey: My league only uses 3 OF and no CI or MI (not to mention, God forbid, two Cs) so that contributes to the shallowness.

But yeah, it’s weird to read guys on here posting, “Broxton just got dropped. Should I pick him up? My bullpen is Nathan, Papelbon, K-Rod, Fuentes and Capps. I’m thinking Broxton is slightly better than Capps.”

  15. @Baron Von Vulturewins: Yeah, agreed. Grey can confirm that I’m a better drafter than day-to-day manager and that I get pissy when my strategy gets beaten by sweat (or, God forbid, bulls**t trades). So if my team gets stuck on the bottom, I’m probably not going to lift them up with brilliant in-year moves….

That said, writing on this site definitely helped me last year in picking up SAGNOFs. Goal this year is to pick the Ludwicks and Quentins (assuming they are FAs)….

yeah i like the free agents also, maybe to much, just picked up morales, like his of/soon to be 1b,got hoff on dl,escobar and fontenot as other benchers, probably move font for a ss to cover furcal on his days off,got 2 more f/a`s targeted,my 1st year in 12 team 5 of and i really like the stradegy part already

@Grey: It’s a 10 team league and you can only play 2 RP’s on your roster per week. I currently have Dukes as an expendable piece now that he’s going to split playing time.

Marmol and Devine were dropped yesterday.

    like your team .

    couple of questions :

    #1 … round #7 … SP run … you guys grab matt cain .
before you , dice k , harden , javy vaz , oswalt , and , aj burn were taken .
which of those would you NOT have taken (over cain), had they falllen to you ?

#2 …. round # 11 … RP run … you guys took frankie “the slinger”
over qualls . before you , went bj ryan , motte , and bell .
would you have taken one of those 3 , instead , had they fallen ?

  26. Grey

    Grey says:

@big o: Personally, and remember this was a joint effort, I wouldn’t take Burnett, Dice K or Harden.

Qualls, Bell and Frank Frank are all pretty much the same. More or less coin flips, but I’d put them in that order.
