Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Alas, for now the Rays are Price-less.  (To recall a conversation I once had with my grandmother after she threw out my 1986 Sportsflic Jose Canseco rookie card, “That card was priceless!”  “Yeah, because it wasn’t worth shit.”)  Frankly, I’m surprised the Rays sent David Price down.  I thought he would start in the bullpen then get starts by the end of April/beginning of May, accumulating 150 innings.  Jason Hammel and Niemann! are far from reliable guys for a team that is supposed to be in the AL East race, but I underestimated the Rays’ thriftiness.  Why are we serving Gulden’s when French’s is twenty-seven cents cheaper?! In the comments on the 2009 Rays fantasy baseball preview, Rudy said I was being too optimistic.  Looks like I was.  Guess that’s why I rock a ‘stache and Rudy has the much more with-it ‘fro.  I’d hold Price in 10 team mixed leagues and deeper.  My prediction is we see Price by mid-May in the majors and he makes a fantasy impact for his patient owners.  If patience is the key, then show me the lock.  Anyway, here’s what else has been going on in spring training for fantasy baseball:

Matt Wieters – I’ve been saying all along that he’s headed to the minors.  So one out of two ain’t bad.  Wieters will be flying into Norfolk International Airport sometime on Monday night.  Looks like another financial decision.  He should be back with the club by mid-May.  If you drafted him, you have to wait on him.  Well, I mean you don’t have to, but what was the point otherwise.  When Gregg Zaun heard the news, he should have had this to say, “If getting demoted so I can start doesn’t kick you in the pants, nothing will.”

Daniel Murphy – I’ve been too lax in mentioning this guy.  Word out of the foothills of St. Lucie is Murphy is batting 2nd.  This is great news for a guy who rocks a solid OBP.  He could be the Mets answer to Kelly Johnson.  It’s more attractive at 2nd base, but there’s a place on some teams for that in the outfield.

Ervin Santana – Rudy told you 20 risky pitchers.  Ervin was one.  You didn’t wanna believe it.  It’s the ‘fro, yo!  (Easy, TCBY.  That’s not fro-yo.)

Shawn Hill – Someone in the comments nicknamed him Baby Webb.  I have no idea why, but Baby Webb is now on the Padres.  Um, a pitcher I like pitching in Petco?  Give me a pen and show me the X.

Kelvim Escobar – He made Rudy’s bounceback pitchers post.  He says you’re welcome.

Tommy Hanson – Maybe he’ll be back in September.  Cut him outside of keepers.

Rafael Soriano – Going to the DL.  In other news, Chipper’s probably hurt too.

Carlos Marmol/Kevin Gregg – Lou will decide this weekend if the Cubs want to begin the year by giving up runs in the eighth or the ninth.

Todd Helton – Retire for the sake of the Rockies.

John Lackey – Forearm tightness.  This is almost as surprising as the Soriano injury.  I’d never expect more than 25 starts from Lackey.

Justin Duchscherer – To start season on the DL?  No way! *Grey turns off faux shock*

Chris Davis – In spring, hitting bombs, striking out and taking names.  And that’s what you should expect in the season, too.

Anderson Hernandez – Hurt.  You can’t keep Ronnie Belliard down!

Felipe Lopez – Going to be leading off and he wants to steal a lot of bases.  He’s already stolen 44 in a season.  He’s eligible all over.  I’m thinking of taking him 13 times in my next draft.

David Aardsma – I suppose he could win the closer job in Seattle, but… David Aardsma?  Eh.

Ryan Braun – He’s hurting right now.  He’s not saying anything because he’s a gamer, but he’s unable to swing a bat.  Frankly, I’m a bit worried.  It was one thing for him to have issues last September, but now they’re returning in April.  I’d still draft him in the first round, but I’d expect a slow start.

Scott Lewis – Him and Anthony Reyes might deserve their own posts, but they’re not getting them just yet.  Scott Lewis doesn’t have overpowering stuff, but then he put up numbers in the minors like he does.  I’d prefer a NL fifth starter (think: Randy Wolf) over a guy with a mid-80s fastball pitching in the AL.  Oh, and he gives up flyballs.  Pass.

Anthony Reyes – I’m a bit of a sucker for a failed prospect making good on old promises (See continuing admiration for Alex Gordon).  Don’t even get me started with my love for guys that iron their hat brim.  So it comes with little shock, I like Reyes.  I like him more than the aforementioned Lewis.  Again, I prefer to go NL in mixed leagues when this deep into starters and I wouldn’t own Reyes in a ten team league yet, but he has good stuff.  He’s an injury risk so don’t pay too much.  Actually, don’t pay anything for either of these guys.  You should be dropping lame bench hitters to take a chance on Reyes.  I see Ryan Church.  I dump Ryan Church for Anthony Reyes.

Micah Owings – You never know how these things turn out.  Fifth starter on the Reds emerges?  Could be.  I’d own him before two other Reds starters.

George Sherrill – He’s choking on turkey bones so far this spring and this year he has Chris Ray to step in and resume closer duties.  Chris Ray may be getting saves as soon as mid-April.

Brian Fuentes – Every year some closers come out of nowhere and erase any faith we had in them coming into the year.  I think this year is Fuentes’s.  His velocity is way down because of a bad back.  Bad backs linger and velocity issues don’t just go away.  With two quality replacements behind him, I think if you own Fuentes, you might want to start making other plans.

Dallas McPherson – Punt.

Adam JonesTy Wigginton, “Dude, you totally bogarted my whole box of Twinkies!”  Adam Jones, “Mea culpa, my man.  I was out stealing bags and hitting home runs this spring, and every time I looked up I would see Felix and Adam and I kept reading Pie Eaton.”

Didn’t the Rays say they were going to do this with Longo last year and then they didn’t?

Also: Would you drop say, Daniel Murphy or Travis Snider for Reyes?

Who gets a shot at the Angels closer job first, Arrendondo or Shields?

Add Volstad to the drop for Reyes list.

And…. just added Zaun in Razzball. Oh, delicious Bizarro World, where ill fate is my good fortune!

Plus, this is a welcome post. The daily player rundowns me feel like the season has finally started. As that quasi-racist Indians mascot would say: Wahoo! Plus, my draft is tonight. Wish me luck, boys.

I’m loving Escobar and Arredondo as value picks. Pop quiz: What’s the right round (in a 12 team) to draft:

    1) Escobar
    2) Arredondo
    For bonus points: Shawn Hill

(I have a feeling the answer for Hill is “The last one.”

Last, any thoughts on Edwin Jackson? He smells kind of sleeper-y to me. Former top prospect, flashes of brilliance, widely admired stuff, new environment, entering age 26 season — I’m not expecting Lincecum 2: The Lincecuming, but maybe an AL version of Brett Myers. Like, 12 W, 3.85, and Ks. That’s the extreme upside, obviously.

  4. Billy says:

Sounds like BJ Ryan might start the yr on the DL with his velocity down, who do you think will replace him? Does BJ risk losing his job?

I dropped Shoppach for Daniel Murphy last night, one catcher league 12 teams H2H and I have Pablo sandoval, can’t carry extra catchers for no reason… def’ly rather have the average in my leage that counts individual hits…? i can use the runs and sb’s too….

I also had a guy shoot me an offer for Kemp and tried backing it up with some rotoworld garbage that says they think kemp is wayyyy overhyped and won’t even be a top 20 OF’er this year? I will say he probably is overrated, but then again he can easily back it up? Not top 20? come on rotoworld? Kemp is what people are hoping for out of BJ UPTON and expecting more, and he could produce more himself, am i right or am i right?

  7. Baron Von Vulturewins

@Tony: Always be suspicious of guys who try to get a player in a trade by telling you how bad the player is. Uh, right.

“Just read this on Yahoo!: The Tigers like to believe they’ve upgraded their defense, unloading bloated shortstop Edgar Renteria for the light-hitting Everett, moving Brandon Inge back to third and putting newly acquired Ramon Hernandez behind the plate, and shifting Guillen to left field.”

Am I nuts? Ramon Hernandez is on Cincy, right? This is an error? (The link goes to the Ramon Hernandez, former Oriole.) He didn’t get traded again, did he?

    Oh, Yahoo!.

  8. Tony says:
    (link)

@Baron Von Vulturewins: yeah i know he was half joking, the idea he was trying to get kemp doesn’t bother me or even that he was low balling me and using some cheesy blog info to back it up, thats fine, i just think rotoworld bumped their heads…. kemp should go 20-30 this year in his sleep, but crazier things have happened, so who knows….

  9. Frank Rizzo says:
    (link)

@Baron Von Vulturewins: Pretty sure that’s bunk BVV. I can’t find anything about Ramon going anywhere. That would make no sense at all since the Reds just got Ramon and the Tigers just got Laird this off season.

Ryan Braun has me nervous too, but the latest report states his MRI was clean, no damage. I chose this guy over Sizemore just based on a feeling……maybe I should ignore my feelings.

I wish I’d grabbed Lopez from the Dbacks late when I had a chance. Love the position eligibility. Damnit.

  10. Fade says:

Now why exactly are you not surprised about Lackey? Other than last year, he had made 5 straight years of exactly 33 starts up until that point. And even then, he went 12-5 in 24 starts. He’s the model of consistency.

Also, don’t look now, but Todd Helton is hitting .423 this spring with 4 HRs and a 1.462 OPS.

  11. I’d add another closer having issues this spring with velocity and effectiveness… Francisco Cordero has been TERRIBLE *(and had offseason ankle/foot surgery) and the Reds are not exactly spewing confidence about his status.

I have picked up the Chinless Wonder, David Weathers, in a few leagues as he closed a few years back and could provide low-end-donkey-corn-level production. A good third closer, or second in NL only anyway…

  12. Team Ram Rod says:
    (link)

Who’s the best potential closer to pick up right now on the Blue Jays or Angels?

  13. @Grey – I have Hanson in an NL-only league… do you think he spends all year in the minors because Atlanta also has JoJo Reyes down there and that he would get called up before Hanson?

Because I would think that after Lowe and Vasquez, it seems likely that one member of the back end of that rotation (Jurrjens, Kawakami, Glavine) might lose their starting gig either to injury or general suckitude.

Daniel Murphy will most likely play a great deal of 2nd base for the Mets. He played the position last September, and has infield experience as a third baseman. As per Mets Geek – “The only real reason to be pessimistic about Daniel Murphy’s chances to play 2nd base in ‘09 is to fear a spat of immense short-sightedness of Met management. Apart from this, there is every reason to hope for and expect Dan Murphy to play 2nd base next season.” Don’t forget, The Mets currently have Luis Blahstilo, who is destined to both underperform/get hurt. Their backups are Cora and Valentin. Murhpy will also be sandwiched between Jose Reyes, Beltran, Wright, and Delgado. Jon Williams has a nice profile on him. His upside projections:
    500 bats/ .300/15/80/90/15. I’ll take that as my 25th pick.

@Freak: re: Reyes –All things being equal — No.

re: Angels closer — I think it would be Arrendondo then Shields, but that’s not set in stone and the Fuentes thing was a gut call more than anything.

@Freak: re: Volstad — Yeah, never really liked him to begin with.

@Baron Von Vulturewins: re: Zaun — He’s a great pickup for FRL.

re: Jackson — I’ve thought about Edwin Jackson, but I think he’s headed to journeyman status, rather than finding himself real late and turning things around status.

re: three end game fliers — They all can to be grabbed late. Arrendondo maybe a round or two before the end. Then Escobar then Hill. You don’t really have to draft Hill, he’ll be sitting there for you at the first sign of trouble with another starter.

@Billy: I think Ryan and F. Cordero are in trouble too. Accardo and Weathers, respectively, would replace them.

    @Tony: Right.

@sean: He’s looked really good in spring training.

@Fade: re: Lackey — I was saying that because he was already complaining of a sore elbow.

re: Helton — I just would rather see some of their youngsters given a chance. They’re more exciting for me.

@Team Ram Rod: Accardo — Angels scene is too murky.

@Fman99: I think Hanson stays down until September. I have no idea what your team situation is, but I’d drop him unless I had a deep bench.

@B: Yeah, but I’d prefer to see some Rox youngsters start to take over. More interesting for me for fantasy baseball purposes.

    @Team Ram Rod: Sure.

    @bpasinko: I wouldn’t take Utley over him.

@jtgodwin: Looks high on RBIs, but not too unrealistic. That’s probably on the high end though.

    @IowaCubs: Owings, Reyes, punt.

@Paulie Allnuts: I think those projections are a slightly optimistic.

    @IowaCubs: It’s a fair trade.

@Paulie Allnuts: I agree with AL KOHOLIC at comment #25. It’s more realistic.

Downs has had an elbow problem this spring and, as you said, he’s a lefty, but maybe you’re right. Though I’d go Accardo first as of right now.

@Josh: Yeah, one of my oldest leagues I’m in is an OBP league.

I’d lose JZ for Shields. You can always find another JZ. Sorry, H to the izzo.

How would you rank these semi-bums for my bench:

Cameron, Shoppach, Swisher, Polanco, LaRoche, O Cabrera

My team needs in order of importance I feel are Stls, R’s, RBI’s, Hr’s

@bubba chuck: Cameron, Cabrera, Polanco, punt. But yuck. Oh, nice commenter name though.

@Grey: Thanks. Should I have a back up Catcher for McCann? Is Shoppach worthless? He played well with V Mart out

I’m in a 10 team 8×8 league (not my choice). Someone just dropped Ianetta for Navarro. What does he know that I don’t? I just want to know what players I’m looking for in particular that will help me in this kind of league. I have
Salty, Teixeira, Utley, Peralta, Alexei Ram, Aramis Ram, Holliday, Quentin, Victorino, N. Cruz, Dye, Votto and Mark Reynolds (Did I not understand my league scoring system or did everyone else just draft poorly?)
For Pitching, I have F-Her, Haren, J. Johnson, Volquez, Qualls and Bell.

For 8×8, did I do this right? I feel great about it so far.

@Grey: Just happened upon the Yahoo Pro-am, you’re killin me Smalls.

McCann in the 3rd and Sandoval in the 8th? I know 16 team leagues suck but a catcher in the 3rd? Another catcher who’s not even eligible in yahoo in the 8th?

Wait, is Rudy squatting behind me and you’re gonna push me like you guys did on the playground? I farted on Rudy’s head and puked on your shoes, remember?

I realize it’s a 16 teamer, which sucks somebody once said, but please tell me you guys are throwing the league so no Yahoos will bother checking your rankings.

@bubba chuck: Shoppach is great, but you don’t need more than one catcher.

@Tom: You should. Looks like a solid team. No idea why he dropped Iannetta for Navarro. Unless one of your 8 categories is empty average catchers.

@BigFatHippo: It’s all a ruse! Gotcha! Yeah, it’s a 16 team, 2 catcher league, so that bumps catchers up considerably. I think we went with BRAN over PEDS. Here comes the bus, I’m throwing Rudy under it. Actually, I think our team is really balanced.

@Grey: so grey, now that jordan zimmerman has made the team, what are his expected numbers, and what kind of trade value can i hope for,,i understand that some young k happy guy might want him badly but where would you put him now?iive got hammel-toe,peavy,bedard and danks now with hanson(man crush)stashed till i gotta drop him (take 1 for the team glavine),

@AL KOHOLIC: I’d expect few Wins, very good Ks, and 4.00 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. A solid #4 fantasy starter, but lots of risk. I’d put him between Danks and Hanson on your list.

Just chiming in on the Fuentes, Arredondo, Shields debate. Ideally you’ll be like Josh and be able to get both Shields and Arredondo, but in deeper leagues you may not have that choice.
Shields is a great, consistent reliever, but he’s 33, same age as Fuentes. Everyone says Arredondo has ridiculous stuff and he’s almost 10 years younger. Pick upside players late, right?

Where does Teahen rank as a 2B then? And will Ian Stewart get over 450 AB this year? I picked him as my MI, and I like him a lot, but freakin Clint Deermeat seems to go on a hot streak everytime his job is about to be taken.

@Tom: I don’t think Stewart goes over 450. Teahen doesn’t have eligiblity right now, but if he did he’d rank at the end of the list as a guy to take a chance on late.
