Did you just see a cat walk up a stairway twice?  A glitch in the Matrix?  Having deja vu?  Did you just Google deja vu and feel like you had Googled it previously?  Okay, yes, there was a Randal Grichuk sleeper post last year.  When I wrote that Randal Grichuk sleeper post, I gave him the projections of 69/25/82/.253/8.  And, he disappointed.  Can you tell me by how much?  Go ahead, guess.  18 HRs?  40 runs?  50 RBIs?  Well, no.  I mean, yes, he did disappoint, but not by nearly that much.  His end of the season line was 66/24/68/.240/5.  I’m not going to say he made good on my sleeper call, which is different and less Al Qaeda’ey than a sleeper cell, but you have to admit he wasn’t the flop you thought he was.  Okay, don’t admit it.  Live in your frickin’ “I’m always right” bubble!  Quick question, do you have to dust when living in a bubble?  Do you ever blow a bubble while in your bubble to get all meta?  You know what?  I don’t care!  Keep your stupid answers to yourself!  Though, if you wanna DM me the answers, I would appreciate it.  So, what can we expect from Randal Grichuk for 2017 fantasy baseball and what makes him a sleeper?

Well, second things firstly, he’s a sleeper due to reasons pointed out above.  People think he disappointed much more than he actually did.  He hit 14 homers in the 2nd half with a .255 average.  Same stats as Josh Donaldson.  Oh, I know what you’re thinking, Donaldson hit for a better average.  Yeah, he hit .257.  As my Jewish grandmother would’ve said, big whoop.  Carlos Santana hit 14 homers in the 2nd half last year, Todd Frazier hit 15 HRs, Chris Davis hit 16 HRs, Mookie Betts hit 13 HRs, Rizzo hit 11.  Only 35 guys in the majors hit more homers than Grichuk in the 2nd half, and the Amazing Randal had fifty to sixty less ABs than most of them.   Now for the red flags, his strikeouts.  He harnessed them in the 1st half, lowering his K-rate from 31.4% (2015) to 22.7% in the 1st half.  But, as previously alluded to, everything else looked like garbage in the first half (10 HRs in more ABs and hit .226).  Then, in the 2nd half, he struck out at a 36.8% rate and put everything together.  So, what gives?  The more aggressive at the plate he is, the better everything else comes out.  Can he lay off bad pitches and do well?  Maybe, but he hasn’t shown that yet.  Can he be aggressive and do well?  Yes, that’s what he has shown.  How much Grichuk can Grichuk chuck if Grichuk strikes out 30% of the time?  A lot, apparently.  I’m going to guess he’ll start this year doing what was successful with last year and not worry about taking pitches.  For 2017, I’ll give him the projections of 72/28/86/.245/8 in 514 ABs and a rock solid number three outfielder with a chance to be a number two.  The good kind of number two.

    Grey,

A guy in my league is interested in Danny Duffy. The three pitchers I am interested in from him are Matt Moore, Jon Gray and Dylan Bundy. I was thinking about asking him for Moore or Gray in return for Duffy. Would you trade Duffy for one of them? If so which one? Or pass?

Now that football’s over it’s time to start taking a look at my dynasty baseball roster. 16 team 6×6 with ops, k/bb, and qs. been in playoffs 4 straight years plus last 2 finals so team built to win now. trying to address any holes in my MLB roster. for context, here’s my mlb roster (gaping holes created by fernandez (sniff sniff) and papi. C – Wilson Ramos, TB 1B – Eric Hosmer, KC 2B – Jason Kipnis, CLE 3B- Kris Bryant, CHC SS- Carlos Correa, HOU OF – Giancarlo Stanton, MIA OF – Starling Marte, PIT OF – Nelson Cruz, SEA UTIL – Adrian Beltre UTIL – Charlie Blackmon, COL BN Sean Rodriguez, ATL BN Jose Ramirez, CLE DL – Michael Brantley, CLE SP – Julio Teheran, ATL SP – Francisco Liriano, TOR RP – Mark Melancon, SF RP – Ryan Madson, OAK P – David Price, BOS P – Ryan Dull, OAK P – Sonny Gray, OAK BN Danny Salazar, CLE BN Clay Buchholz, PHI BN Kevin Gausman, BAL BN Tyler Thornburg, BOS BN Seung Hwan Oh, STL BN Hector Neris, PHI BN Jose Quintana, CWS BN Danny Duffy, KC BN Alex Reyes, STL DL – Cam Bedrosian, LAA, glen perkins. guys on my minors roster are: C- Andrew Susac, MIL CI- Gilbert Lara, MIL CI- Peter O’Brien, ARI MI- Carlos Asuaje, SD MI- Javier Guerra, SD OF- Yusniel Diaz, LAD OF- Alex Verdugo, LAD OF – Brett Phillips, MIL UTIL- Luis Alexander Basabe, CHW UTIL- Forrest Wall, COL P- P- Jorge Lopez, MIL P- Dylan Cease, CHC P- Robert Gsellman, NYM P- Mike Clevinger, CLE P- Adalberto Mejia, MIN P- German Marquez, COL.
Even losing Papi I think my offense is pretty stacked, especially if i can get anything out of brantley. My pitching has me concerned though. Losing fernandez really stings as he was able to make up for a lot of performance issues from the bottom of my rotation. I have a lot of guys I need to bounce back (liriano, sonny gray, salazar) and guys who I’m concerned may regress (teheran, duffy). If I try to acquire an ace to replace fernandez it’s going to cost at least reyes. Is it worth pursuing or should I just hold him to see if he develops into a no 1 or 2 in the near future? I like Gsellman to provide me with another solid arm as well. While I don’t think (but certainly hope) he’s degrom-lite, I’d be pretty happy even if he has a bit of regression from last year. How do you feel about his outlook this year? Short of an ace level guy, how much effort/resources would you put into increasing my depth in the rotation with mid (like odorizzi) or even back of rotaion guys (nova, tillman, mccarthy)?
As for closers, melancon and oh are strong. But the rest of my guys are question marks. I’m considering keeping Thornburg around to back up kimbrel but also because he can be a solid high-k, low ratio arm. What do you think is the likelihood either madson or dull get the closer role in OAK? I’m assuming it will be Doolittle with maybe dull in the 8th so I’m leaning towards throwing madson back to make room for guys I have to move off my DL. Speaking of which, do you think bedrosian will be given or can earn the closer role from street in LA? And who do you see closing in PHI this year? Is neris at least the 8th inning guy? Finally, is glen perkins just a hail mary or do you think he’ll get a shot to close for MIN again?
Thanks for the insight and for reading my novel Grey.

@Brian: Reyes can be an ace, don’t need to trade him for one… I’ll go over all my rankings and how I feel about players very soon… Madson and Street will close, both will get hurt or falter and then Bedrosian and Dull… Don’t believe in Doolittle… Perkins could close again, but I doubt it… Next time, do me a favor and ask one question, and hit the return button so I can see them easier

    Great work, man. Enjoyed profusely!

    a. Number 2, funny you mention that. Jimmy-jammed the public toilet yesterday (quietly left the washroom hoping no one saw me). Have been banished to access of public toilets only! Actually, during my summer job working through college my fellow co-workers called me ‘Jimmy Jammer’ on account of every time I would relieve a machine operator he would leave it in proper working order, then I would take over and by the time that he returned from his union-sanctioned 15-minute break – Jimmy Jammer jams up a section of the machine! Ah, life.

    b. I owned Grichuk for a lot of last year. He was good. I thought he’d be better, he did have many 0/4 nights – strikeouts, fly outs, ground outs, you name it. I thought he and Gyorko would at least hit one back-to-back HR on my team but that also didn’t happen.

    Hey Grey,

    I’m in a 12-team H2H dynasty “keep forever” league.

My team is badly in need of a SS (I currently have Brad Miller for this year but I expect him to lose his eligibility after this year so I have a big hole)

I have a chance to acquire Jean Segura but the asking price is Lester or Cueto

    At SP I have – Arrieta/Lester/Cueto/Verlander/Hendricks/Hamels/Hill/Cobb

I don’t expect Segura to replicate last year but I also don’t think he’s as bad as the two prior years. Seattle has a good lineup so he could get a lot of runs.

    I’m looking for a 1-for-1 deal:
would you trade any of the above pitchers for Segura? I’m trying to properly gauge Segura’s value in a dynasty in conjunction with the above pitchers.

Which deal is the best for me and my team?
    A) Trade Cueto for Segura
    B) Trade Lester for Segura
    C) Trade Hendricks for Segura
    D) Trade (insert name) for Segura
    E) Screw Segura – keep the pitchers

My fear with Grichuk is assured playing time. Dexter Fowler kind of put a wrench in things a bit. Assuming Piscotty takes over first base duties.. what happens when Gyorko comes in with a hot bat and Grichuk continues his 27+ Krate? I would assume they give Gyorko some games at 1B and move Piscotty to the OF for short term stints. What happens if Kolten Wong puts it together or they don’t move Matt Adams? Surely that’ll shake up things.

Grichuk has a pretty nice power ceiling. But, without assured playing time, I’m going to look towards an Aaron Judge K guy that is going to for sure be in the middle of the Yankee lineup daily over Grichuk. Any thoughts? (yes, Grichuk is better than Judge at this stage, no doubt, but playing time is important in any head to head league)

    • CMUTimmah says:
      (link)

@CMUTimmah: Also, Grichuk could hit second, he also could hit 7th. 7th is clearly an option if Diaz continues off his rookie year and Peralta is back in the mix. And Fowler is going to be the clear leadoff guy….

      Fowler
      Carp
      Piscotty
      Diaz

      Peralta

I’m in a 14 team 7 keeper league. I try to break my keepers down to six hitters and one ace pitcher. Following the tragic lose of JoFer I am left without my ace.

I am wondering if you would consider trading one of Jonathan Villar or Khris Davis for Alex Reyes and a 2nd rd pick knowing the majority of the top 100 players are off the board as keepers?

Is the potential of Alex Reyes worth over paying some right now to get my future ace?
