NOTES:

$ Methodology/FAQs/Definitions:  The foundation behind these player values is our Point Share methodology.  WTF is a Point Share you ask?  It represents the estimated difference in an average team’s points if they were to substitute a given player for the average drafted player at his position (same in concept as Alex Patton’s Standings Gain Points).  So if a player has a 1.0 for Runs, he would, on average, increase a team’s standing points in Runs by 1 point.  Thus, a completely average player is worth zero Point Shares.  These Point Shares are converted to dollars at the total player level as well as for each category.  The sum of a player’s category $ plus $1 (for replacement level) equals their total auction $ value.  Converting Point Shares into $ is covered in the FAQs that I had put together as part of the Historical Player Rater.

Filtering Results:  You can filter multiple fields at the same time.  The text fields below the column headers enable several methods for filtering the data.  Here are some examples:

Function Symbol Example Explanation
ANY MATCH ‘B’ in Pos Typing B in Pos will filter to any player with 1B, 2B, or 3B eligibility.  Type in more details to filter further – e.g., “1B’, “1B, 3B”, etc.
OR | Ruth|Aaron in ‘Name’ All players with Ruth or Aaron in their name
NOT ! !FM in ‘Halls’ All players who are not in both the Hall of Fame and the Hall of Merit
NOR ! | !F|M in ‘Halls’ All players who are not in the Hall of Fame NOR the Hall of Merit.  Just use the ! once.
GREATER THAN > >30 in $ All players whose $ is greater than 30
LESS THAN < <30 in $ All players whose $ is less than 30
GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO >= >=30 in $ All players whose $ is greater than or equal to 30
LESS THAN OR EQUAL TO <= <=30 in $ All players whose $ is less than or equal to 30

Roster:  For ‘ESPN Roster’, this is C/1B/2B/SS/3B/5 OF/CI/MI/UTIL/9P.  For ‘Yahoo Roster’, this is C/1B/2B/SS/3B/3 OF/2 UTIL/2 SP/2 RP/4 P.  For AL/NL-only leagues, this is 2C/1B/2B/SS/3B/5 OF/CI/MI/UTIL/9P.

Pos / MVPos:  ‘Pos’ includes every position the player is eligible.  ‘MVPos’ is the position that was used for their Point Share rankings and is the position where the player is judged most valuable. The order of most valuable to least valuable for positions is: C, SS, 2B, 3B, OF, 1B, DH.  Note that the position eligibility rules for ESPN and AL/NL only formats is 20 games previous season / 10 games current season while Yahoo format is 10 games previous season / 5 games current season.

Steamer Projections – Created in 2008 and maintained and operated by Jared Cross, Dash Davidson, and Peter Rosenbloom. One of the top (if not the top) performing projection systems based on our 2012 baseball projections test. Playing time estimates as well as Saves, Holds, and Quality Starts are provided by Rudy Gamble of Razzball.

Grey Projections – Grey has produced fantasy baseball projections @ Razzball for several years as part of his yearly preseason rankings. His projections have performed admirably against more mathy solutions – particularly given that his projections are release pre-March when playing time estimates are more hazy.

Hitter/Pitcher Split In Auction Values  – Pre-season $ values are based on a 67/33 hitting/pitching split to better mirror draft behavior (vs. a 59/41 mix for a league with 13 hitters and 9 pitchers).   The 2013 Razzball Commenter Leagues had a median hit/pitch split of 66.5/34.5.  (The $ for In-season and Rest of Season projections mirror the proportion of hitters and pitchers in the league – so 59/41 in the standard ESPN format)

Position Eligibility – 20 Games in last season for ESPN and ‘2 Catcher’ formats.   5 Games for Yahoo.

ESPN Roster Format - C/1B/2B/SS/3B/CI/MI/5 OF/UTIL/9 P.

Yahoo! Roster Format – C/1B/2B/SS/3B/3 OF/2 UTIL/2 SP/2 RP/4 P.

Would you make this your order for draft purposes? We only use one catcher in our ten team AL only and I really don’t like our options after the first five or six. Do these values take into consideration the amount of platooning to take place in the American League?

    • Is ur league a snake or auction? If snake, I use my values but try to compare w/ another published source to know where I’m bearish vs bullish. That’s more imperative for snake because u don’t want to pick a guy any higher than u have to. Deduct catchers by 50% if it’s 1 catcher

      • Korey says:
        (link)

@Rudy Gamble: thanks for the feedback. Yeah, it’s snake. I have been going over our past drafts to find tendencies and the top five catchers go in a matter of 18 pics generally starting in round four. Last year I waited til late and ended up banging my head over the table with Jesus Montero and Avila.

I think these values also show the importance of picking up a closer earlier than usual, especially considering K/9. It’s really hard to dig for scrap saves in these leagues.

        Thanks again.

    Appreciate this Rudy. Thanks.
Offer this comment not as a criticism, but as an FYI.
I play in 4 AL only 2 catcher leagues with 2C/1B/2B/3B/SS/MI/CI/5OF/DH/9P rosters.

In the redraft league, an owner would not get any of the top 50 players for the auction values suggested.
Our guys generally go as follows on a $130 cap.
    Players 1-5 from $19-22/Players 6-10 from 17-18/Players 11-20 from 15-16/Players 21-40 from 11-12/
    Players 41-50 usually go for $10 with players 51-60 at $9-10/Players 61-70 for $8/ Players 71-80 for $7/
    Players 91-100 for $ 5-6/Players 101-110 for $4-5/ and Players 111-140 for $3.
Most of the rest go for $2 with about 20 players at the end going for $1.

In the keeper leagues with 10 keepers in one league and 15 in the other two, any top 100 bat will
cost anywhere from $3 to $ 5 more than the same player went for in the redraft league.

Most teams aim for about a $90/$40 hitting/pitching split..even a tad more on the hitting.

Thanks again for all your work. It is a very valuable resource.

    • @s_t_w: $130 cap? This is based on a $260 cap. So cut every $ amount in half.

      • s_t_w says:
        (link)

        @Rudy Gamble:
        Yeah, I get that.
What I’m saying is that if I double my numbers or cut yours in half, whatever, so that it is apples to apples, the top 50-60 guys in my leagues cost more than what you are suggesting they should. On your scale, our top five guys would go for $38-44/45, the next five from 34/36, the next 10 from 30-32 etc.

Its your fault by the way that I’ve recorded these prices over the past few years and go into every auction with a pretty good idea of what each guy will go for. And I thank you big time for that.

Not everyone’s rankings are the same, of course, but I can pretty well count on the 10th most expensive player going at about $18 on my scale, $36 on yours. The value plays tend to be guys that Grey or you have ranked higher than other sites have ranked them: guys like Cobb, Gordon, Gray etc. while letting others pay the premium prices for the likes of Ellsbury or Mauer. Its worked out pretty well over the last few years.

        • Ah, so the top player go above my $. Yeah, that’s typical of auctions we are in too. Always a few stars-and-scrubs builders. That’s why we never tend to get top 10 players – just aim for the deepest team.

Rudy, do you participate in any AL only leagues? I would love to see how your strategies might change in these leagues (if they would).

    • Yes, been in an expert AL 12 league for 4 years. In last 3 years, I think I finished 4th, 3rd, and 2nd. Simple strategy. Use my $ figures. Try to avoid overpaying for hitters and try to stretch money so I have as many positions filled with a 300+ AB hitter. Go bulk on SPs to try and win W and K. Pick well enough so I can at least do pretty well in ERA/WHIP.

      • Korey says:
        (link)

@Rudy Gamble: Bulk on SP late in the draft and stream your starts with matchups? Also, do you ever RP to vulture W’s and K’S? Not set up guys really, but relievers like a Hochaver from KC with good K/9 ratios and good WHIP.

        • @Korey: I draft SPs throughout the draft and bulk up late if there are some still available. Do matchups as much as pitching health allows. It’s good to have a middle reliever around for weeks when you don’t have enough worthy SPs but I focus that on handcuffs for my closer if I can.

I really appreciate all the help and quick replies we get on this site. This is my third year in an AL only (2nd place my first year and tied for third last year)and I realize now how important the draft is. I am trying to get a leg up on a draft strategy. Is there a site that has ADP for AL only purposes?

Thanks again. I feel I have become a competitive roto mixed league player but I really want to the next step in my AL only league.

    • Glad to help. I haven’t seen AL-only ADP. But I’d use something like CBS’s or ESPN’s AL-only $ as an ADP substitute.

Just drafted my AL only team. 5th pick in 10 team snake draft, 1 catcher. Roto, with 1300 innings cap. Thank you for all your great stuff, I think I ended up with a good team thanks to your help.

SP was gone so I loaded up on RP and will move a couple as ‘swing’ players. I think I will get a couple SP eventually off FA list. Obviously there will be a couple weak positions in a league like this but I was hoping for some in put on what your thoughts might be and certain areas to concentrate on moving forward. Thank you!!!!!

  6. Korey says:
    (link)

    @Korey:
Just adding to what I had earlier on my AL only team. I researched the past three years standings of my league and came up with these averages that win each category: (one catcher, one utility) Runs-736, HR-210, RBI-740, SB-142, AVG-.275, (1300 IP cap) Wins-85, SV-95, SO-1200, ERA-3.45 and WHIP 1.20. My goal when using projections is to aim for third in every category, which I figured those averages as well.

When I went to the WAR tool, it projects my team to win every offensive category, accept SB. Plugging in the four starters I have, plus Rodney, Scheppers, and Fields my ERA and WHIP are pretty competitive. I’m sitting at 900 IP so I have about 400 more innings to keep the ERA/WHIP respectable yet improve on Wins, K’s, and SV.
In a normal league, I have no problem moving forward and streaming those final IP, but in an AL only league I afraid my options on the FA list won’t allow me to stream that much. I’m guessing, if I keep my roster as is, I will have to us RP. This wouldn’t be too hard to keep ERA/WHIP and a K rate around 8 or 9, but getting W’s and SV would fall upon luck.

Do I trade a bat for another SP to round my rotation or take my chances with streaming options?

I appreciate the help. I love this site and really appreciate all the work you guys put into it.

        Thanks for help!

I obviously have the depth to move a 1B, but I think they are undervalued by lots of people so I don’t know if I get value back. Or should I try moving Myers since OF might be an easier spot to fill?

@Grey: Been offered Yu Darvish and Colby Rasmuss for Adam Jones and Cody Allen. According to the dollar values on this tool I win that trade.

Leaves me with Myers, Hunter, and Rasmus in OF, with Springer held in a NA spot for later in the year.

            What do you guys think?

              Don’t like it

            • I don’t mind the trade if you really need the SP help.

    • @Korey: FYI, I think adding up your $ in each category will give you a better sense of your team strength than looking at previous year targets. Since the $ are set to 67/33, the average per category should be about $32 per hitting category and $15.50 per pitching category. Just assume that Saves will be lower than that.

      • Korey says:
        (link)

        @Rudy Gamble:
R-$33.1, HR-$37.8, RBI-$37.0, SB-$22.3, AVG-$29.5 for hitting CATs, averaged 13 to 14 for pitching CATs with the exception being for SV which was a negative if I use lots of RP.

Another great way to look at my strengths and weaknesses!

        Thanks again.

I have Abreu and Pujols in my 1B/Utility spots. Springer being activated now has my OF full with Jones, Myers, Hunter, and Springer. I don’t think it makes since having one of those six players on the bench in a AL only league. Abreu has appeal, should I trade him for Machado to cover my 3B disaster (Freeze)? Or try to sell high on Hunter?

My offensive cats will be fine but I do fear my AVG will be hurting.
    Thank you.
