@Ryan, Do you mean Kelly Johnson? If so then I would just use whoever is hotter, I don’t think either is necessarily a must own all year. If you need the steals then deifnitely Johnson, and he does hit in a better line-up, so i think he gets the better final numbers. If it is indeed the Ray’s Elliot Johnson, I wouldn’t, he’s below both the other Johnson and Lowrie.

@Lahair club for men, It’s close, it depends on what other 2B options are out there or who you have on your bench… I’m a big Zobrist fan and he started slow like this last year and was just fine… I’m still not sold on McDonald, he’s not too much above replacement level if at all so he’s kinda a throw in unless it’s like a 20-team league. If you have an OK backup at 2B or CI or someone is on the wire who is still useful I’d do it.

@Lahair club for men, hmm.. thats a little different. Not as much upside with Harper then. However, I think I would still do it. I do like McDonald but if you think your SP can take the hit then Id do it. It would be really hard for me to turn down Harper… even if its just for the rest of this season and the next. Just my opinion tho.

Nice article… coincidentally I have a Smyly related question.

Just traded Dee Gordon and received Drew Smyly… I could really use a beckend type starter in my rotation and SP is also very thin in this league do to alot of bench spots. My team is also very good in steals and my starting SS is Andrus so I really had no use for Dee. I also hear if Dee doesnt start to hit he could go to the minors. So what do you think of the trade for me?

It was tough to do with Tex and Haren leading me to back to back championships back in the day, but I’m looking towards the future not the past. It makes me mad cause I let Bumgarner go at one point and went with more established keepers and now I have to make a move to bring him back. Oh well. Here’s to hopefully a solid decade + of an ace in SF.

@stumanji, I agree his leash is longer, and based on how Smyly responded to his early exit, he seemed humble and happy to do what he’s asked and Leyland’s replacement relievers ended up costing the Tigers the game. I think Smyly has earned more innings, and even with the tough state line, is going no where on my teams. Thanks for reading, one should be up every week!

@Topher, McCutchen for both… I know Cutch started slow but he’s really heating up and Beltran is already having some slight knee issues… I owned Beltran last year, and while he was solid, he just seemed old and I have a feeling he’s really gonna fall apart in the second half… Plus Cutchgives you the 5-categories to Beltran’s 4.

@Fenst, Ugh… Yeah I’ve never been a Scherzer or Jemile fan… I think Rickie turns it around, he hit a homer today and his walk rate is at a career high, and he’s still got an OBP at .306 even while hitting .157.

I’d do that deal… Haren has got a LOT of mileage, and while I think he bounces back and still has some nice years ahead, Bumgarner has a whole career in one of the league’s most pitcher friendly parks… He’s a great keeper and will be your ace for years to come.

Even with Napoli at first, he’s not much of a downgrade from Teixieira and having two catchers to fill all your catcher starts is a great idea. Plus you get a nicer pick. Great for both this year and for your future.

Quick trade advice. In 12th out of 12 even though my team isn’t near the worst (hate h2h). I really think I need to get younger in a 10 man keeper league. I was offered Napoli, Bumgarner and a 2nd round pick (basically a 12th) for Teixeira, Haren, and a 5th (essentially a 15th).

Napoli would slot in at 1b while Ruiz is hot and maybe move back to catcher if Adam Lind ever starts hitting.

My other current keepers look like Rollins, Wright, Victorino, Gordon, Romero, and then sadly Latos, Ackley, and Luebke. Ok maybe this team is that bad. The Scherzer’s and Weeks’s of the world are killing me.

Let me know what you think.

@Tub, Yea it’s been a tough, tough year for closers… I’d probably keep Johnson and Robertson… Johnson is still not getting the cred and Robertson being on the DL is going to keep anyone from wanting to trade for him and I still think he gets a shot at the role when he returns, barring a spectacular run by Soriano (which I doubt). And it’s not like Rodney is getting much more cred, but his numbers are a little better and I actually feel like Johnson might have a better hold on the role… You never know what Maddon might do if Rodney blew 2 in a row or something.

@Wake Up, The Pit matchup is a must start. I don’t know the math right off hand, but Smyly’s very first inning he left 3 on base (nerves probably didn’t help), so from them on it might be not quite as skewed. His BABIP isn’t really that far off from the league norm, and with his stuff, is sustainable.

@Moscowitz, Gonna have to disagree with YOU, Moscowitz. I see Smyly as a nice commodity even in shallower leagues. Since you guys are talking numbers, let me bring up his 23rd overall ranked SIERA ranking! And his swinging strike percentage is ranked 21st overall! Pretty damn amazing considering he’s a rookie.

I really liked this write-up Jonathan. It gives me a good view to put with the numbers. The only question/concern I have with Smyly is will he be able to keep it going once he starts to see teams the second time through… How well can he mix his pitches?

But for now, I definitely think he needs to be owned in 12 team leagues. (as well as those other guys you mentioned, Moscowitz)
