i like velez better. i prefer the 2B eligibility and think he’s a stronger SB threat. both have playing time issues but it seems the giants are trying harder to get velez time (i wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the OF this year). rajah davis will be fighting for backup time with fred lewis.

To be fair, I picked Velez up on March 11th in my early-drafting expert league in case he continued his spring training pace. Didn’t think he warranted hyping until frandsen went down.

Agree on Butler. Didn’t have him highly ranked. He went in the 18th round of my first expert draft in early March and 13th round of my second draft on Monday. Snagged him in my friends league, though!

Velez is especially exciting because he can give you steals on a team that has nothing to play for so they should steal. Another reason why Durham shouldn’t be played. But the Giants have done stupid things in the past.

So far we’ve said to drop Church or Rauch to pick up Velez, it’s not like we’re saying drop someone with any value. Rauch for Velez? I like those odds to play for some steals upside.

I like it how sleepers never stay sleepers for very long anymore. 3 weeks ago I took Billy Butler in the 2nd to last round of my quasi-experts draft. The next day Butler went 3 for 3 in some spring training game and fantasy writers everywhere moved him up from off-the-list of sleepers to the very top. Overnight every baseball site referenced Butler. If I drafted today there is no way I land him where I did.

Sleeper searchers seem to move in congruent shifts, and the latest fav is this Velez guy. Your site demands we grab him, Greener on the other side says the same. No one cared about this player when he had 9 steals, but now that its 13, he must be had! Meanwhile, hes not going to start unless Ray Durham gets the boot.

I can’t complain too much, since I added Velez about a week ago when I read hes the only thing that Giants fans enjoy at their games. But I still think its funny.

I think the next player to spread like wildfire is Corey Patterson. Someone is going to point out he inexplicably raised his contact rate to .86 in the 2nd half, and that he has finally “put it all together.” Sure he completely stopped hitting homers, but that point will be widely ignored.

Oh, and I hate Roberts also. Markakis too, not sure why your site loves this guy. I had him last year and the rbis were there, but the steals were completely unexpected and without Patterson there to double steal with, I assume those numbers drop.

Oh it's sparking like a downed power line... at least with one GM. And since a DL spot for Gallardo opened up room for Velez, it didn't cost me anything. Except that we only get 10 free Free Agent moves per year and each additional move costs $1... Hoodlumman's last blog post..So baseball season started today...

well, can’t guarantee anything with velez but it’s a gamble that could pay off handsomely.

i’m sure whomever you’d drop for him will be there in 2 weeks if it doesn’t pay off. if they aren’t, someone similar will be.

and, besides, what’s better than sparking suspicion and raising eyebrows in your league?

Brian Roberts? I have no animosity towards the guy. I took Figgins in the 5th so me plucking Velez off of waivers is strictly a move (in my league) that will spark suspicion and raise a few eyebrows. Riot = Ryan Theriot, right?

Hmm, I’d rather have Theriot if I needed a starter. I’d rather have Velez for a bench slot. I’m still debating whether I want to start him the first week but it’s a gamble to go into the season w/o knowing how much time he’ll have.

Then again, unless your league is super deep, it’s not like Theriot is much better than the average FA available…

Thanks. I appreciate your post and the advice. Velez has been on my radar this spring for obvious reasons. Drafting Rickie Weeks in a 20 team league takes a certain leap of faith when Ray Durham and Mark DeRosa are the best available 2B on the wire. Having a possible mini Figgins as a fallback option will be a huge relief. I've always had a soft spot for Gomes. I picked him up during his '05 mid season call up. I still believe he has the ability to post a .258/35/90/15 season if he ever got 550 AB. Too bad the TB brass would rather waste AB on the likes of Greg Norton, Cliff Floyd and Eric Hinkse.
