Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

After stealing only 3 bases in all of 2012, Peter Bourjos met that mark in the past ten games. It seems as though his hamstring is just fine, and despite hitting in the bottom of the lineup for the Angels, he is producing runs. More importantly for the purpose of this column, he appears to have the green light and hasn’t been caught stealing yet, either. If you’d like, we can pretend that last year never happened and just look at his 22 steals in 147 games back in 2011 to get an idea of what he might be able to pull off the rest of this season. Last week, I pointed to the fact that I’d rather roster a leadoff hitter when looking for steals, at which point Cholly Manuel promptly shoved Ben Revere into the seventh spot in the Phillies’ lineup and he stole 3, count’em 3 bags. Thanks for proving my point, Cholly! So lineup position be damned, feel free to ride Bourjos to SAGNOF glory. He’ll draw the Tigers and Astros this week. While you’re here, check out some of this week’s other available speedsters.

GREEN LIGHT SPECIAL! Rajai Davis

(Last Week: 3 SB, This Week: @TB@BOS, Owned: 4%)

Mr. Davis has now accumulated 14 SB in just 105 AB in 2013. Since returning from the DL, he has hit .375 with 6 steals. Whether he plays in a platoon or not, he can contribute to your fantasy team with his speed, and if there was ever a week to give him a go, this would be it.  The Rays have allowed the second most steals in all of baseball while the Red Sox are tied for fourth. Davis will see 7 games against these two teams this week. If he steals less than 3 bases with those match-ups I will eat my hat.

Gregor Blanco(Last Week: 2 SB, This Week: @LAD,@COL, Owned: 14%)

Angel Pagan will likely be out longer than originally expected, and Blanco has already shown he can handle the job as the Giants’ leadoff hitter and centerfielder in his absence, recording at least one hit in every game last week.

Leonys Martin – (Last Week: 3 SB, This Week: @NYY, CIN, Owned: 12%)

If his 9-game hitting streak and 3 steals in the past week weren’t reason enough to grab him, Craig Gentry was placed on the DL, opening the door to even more at-bats for Martin. He’s got two tough match-ups this week from a steals perspective, but it’s hard not to like him in Arlington no matter who the opponent is.

Jarrod Dyson - (Last Week: 2 SB (2 Games), This Week: ATL,@MIN, Owned: 1%)

Dyson returned from the DL this past weekend, promptly stealing a base in a pinch run situation on Saturday and getting the slam & legs on Sunday. The Royals optioned Chris Getz to AAA to make room for Dyson and they figure to play him more often than not, whether it’s as a leadoff hitter or in the nine-hole.  I recommended him last week as a spec pickup while on the DL, but it’s all systems go for the speedster at this point. He’s got two tough teams to run against this week, so it will be interesting to see if he can still swipe a few bags.

Elliot Johnson – (Last Week: 1 SB, This Week: ATL@MIN, Owned: 3%)

Johnson doesn’t have the flat out speed of Dyson, but he will also benefit from the demotion of Getz, as he was in a platoon situation prior to that (I coined the name Chrelliot Jetzon when they were together). Don’t love the match-ups this week and he’s hit under .200 since my last column so he’s just kind of meh.

DJ LeMahieu - (Last Week: 1 SB, This Week: @BOS, NYM, SF  Owned: 4%)

LeMahieu has been a pleasant surprise in the stolen base category with 9 on the year. He’s also got a little 6-game hit streak going for himself. He’s an interesting option at least for the favorable match-up in Boston.

Pedro Ciriaco - (Last Week: 3 SB, This Week: PHI, @MIA, Owned: 2%)

Ciriaco will be filling in for Everth Cabrera while the Man of Steal (am I the first to call him that? If I am I’d like to claim it) is on the DL, and apparently Cabrera left behind a magic potion in his locker for Pedro, with 3 steals over his last 7 games. He’s got a good match-up against the Phils to begin the week. Nights like last Thursday, when he went 2 for 4 with a triple, a homer, and a steal are probably the exception to the rule, however.

Eric Young - (Last Week: 0 SB, This Week: @CWS, @COL, WSH Owned: 1%)

SAGNOF is in the eye of the beholder, I guess. In Colorado, EY2 was just a fourth outfielder struggling to find playing time, maybe even under-appreciated as a hitter. In New York, he’s suddenly a spark plug leadoff man! It’s great to see the guy hitting well and playing every day for the Mets, but for getting on base as much as he did this past week, he still didn’t steal any bags and since that’s what we’re all about in this column, it’s a little concerning.

Teams highlighted in green are in the top ten for most stolen bases allowed.

Teams highlighted in red are in the top ten for least stolen bases allowed.

I was starting to love the guy but it doesn’t look like Bourjos will play this week.

@KittyEmperor: Truth…sounds like he jammed his thumb pretty badly.

  2. Mitch says:

    Blanco or Martin?

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

      @Mitch: thanks, Mitch…I prefer Martin.

      • Mitch says:
        (link)

@Mike: Thanks! It would be nice if Jason Heyward would get off his period and start hitting/running so I wouldnt have to drop someone to pick up his slack.

        • Mike

          Mike says:
          (link)

@Mitch: absolutely…I’m in the same boat with Josh Hamilton right now

          • Mitch says:
            (link)

@Mike: haha… i was offered mclouth for heyward which is how this started. i’m sick of heyward, but it’s prob a stupid trade. i’ll be dropping Andrew Bailey for Martin. unless you feel that mcclouth for heyward (and keep bailey) is worthwhile.

            • Mike

              Mike says:
              (link)

@Mitch: Bailey doesn’t seem to be able to get the job done in Boston, and I wouldn’t give up on Heyward just to chase steals when there’s guys like these on the wire all the time…just my two cents, but I’d hold onto Heyward as long as possible

  3. MB says:

So do I dare go Martin over Aoki? Truly looking for upside plays if that exists

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

@MB: thanks, MB…considering Aoki’s steals are crazy down, sure I think it might be worth the gamble

  4. Dudeman says:

Got stuck with Rutledge/KJ/Walker at 2B and need to drop one or two. KJ seems obvious but what about the other two? Do you expect Rutledge to keep being lame?

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

@Dudeman: Dudeman…Hard to be optimistic about Rutledge right now, so I’d hold Walker…he’s boring as hell but productive

  5. Clint says:

Mike, need some guidance on Bourgos/Revere. Rest of Season Rankings have Revere above Bourgos so I snagged him a week or so ago before he got hot. Then Bourgos got hot so I dropped Revere for him thinking his lineup’s bound to get him better pitches but now Bourgos has the thumb injury and even though they say it’s minor, having Braun on my team gave me the shakes when I heard “thumb” so I picked Revere back up. Which of these two guys would you go with for the rest of the season?

Note: I’m in a pretty lazy Yahoo public league if you can’t tell w/the ease of drops/pickups :)

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

@Clint: Hi Clint..I’d go with Revere even over a healthy Bourjos. Revere’s got the wheels to swipe 40 bags even though he won’t hit for any power.

  6. Jack Full of Hate says:

I just grabbed martin. Now I’m thinkin he might sit a little on my bench. Happy monday to you too

@Mike: I solved my own problem, dropped blanks for santiago and martin plays everyday.

Thanks for the stache compliment, I like to fit in around here

  7. Bryan says:
    (link)

Picked up Young Jr last week for steals obviously got zero, who do you prefer out of this group going forward…is Aoki droppable?

    Young Jr (on my team)
    Aoki (on my team)
    Leonys Martin (available)

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

@Bryan: Thanks, Bryan…I’d drop Young for Martin….I could see Martin and Aoki being very similar players from this point out, with maybe a slight edge going to Martin due to ballpark/lineup

  8. FMFBL says:

already own Bourjos. think any of these guys are worth the add (of said guys) and drop of Bourjos? or just hold till more comes out about his finger?

    great stuff, thanks!

    • FMFBL says:
      (link)

@FMFBL: sorry, just saw the revere post above. if he’s not available do any of the other options come in above Bourjos?

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

@FMFBL: anytime…thanks for reading FMFBL. of this group above, I could see swapping him for either Martin or Blanco

  9. Scott says:

Who has a better 2014- Jackie Bradley Jr. or George Springer?

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

@Scott: Scott Evans would be the expert on this question, but personally I’d go Springer …with the promotion to AAA last night, we might even get a look at him before the end of this year…

  10. Rudacious says:

    Licroy or perzyenskieeeeeeeeeee from texas

    ROS

  11. Snarf says:
    (link)

I will caveat that Bourjous (outside stupid hand jam) is flirting more with the one spot and Scoscia loves himself some Bourjous so much he held Trout down for as long as he did.

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

@Snarf: good point, Snarf…I’d love to see him in the leadoff role

  12. Bryan says:

Thanks…Who do you like better ROS?

    Arenado/Rendon

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

      @Bryan: I’d go Arenado

  13. George says:
    (link)

Hey Mike – Love your work. Thanks very much. Quick question: is Mark Reynolds droppable? He’s been in an awful slump, and Matt Dominguez, who has 20 RBIs in the last 30 days, looks like a preferable player to own. Thoughts?

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

@George: thanks!..nothing wrong with riding the hot hand, but Reynolds should get hot again as well at some point….

  14. Sniff Test says:
    (link)

Bonafacio has some steals potential…how much does the impending return of Reyes and Lawrie impact his already inconsistent playing time?

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

@Sniff Test: Yeah, he’s SAGNOF, but you are right to be worried about the decreased playing time once they get healthy…I don’t think Boni is as good an option as Bourjos, Martin, Blanco, or maybe even Pierre if he doesn’t play much

  15. JoeMorgan'sMustache says:

Someone offered me Middlebrook/Rollins for Carpenter/Gomez. I understand Gomez got hurt yesterday, but that’s ridiculous. My question is….would it be ok to burn this managers house down? Would it also be ok to lure Jason Heyward to that house before the burning commences? Thanks.

      • JoeMorgan'sMustache says:
        (link)

@Mike: Ha, Heyward has been brutal! It’s driving me nuts. That nice beginning to June was such a tease. Since 2 hr game on the 10th he is 11/50, with um…. 1 run and 1 rbi!?!? That’s just so bad it’s hard for me to even comprehend.

        • Mike

          Mike says:
          (link)

@JoeMorgan’sMustache: I hope he doesn’t turn into one of those alternating 1 good year/1 bad year guys! I still think he’ll be okay, but it’s hard to be patient…I’m sitting on BJ Upton this year like a mama bird waiting for her chick to hatch

          • JoeMorgan'sMustache says:
            (link)

@Mike: Nice. BJ should come around…he has had a solid June and the uptick in walks looks real nice. Sitting on Heyward myself…have him in two leagues. One is a 16 team h2h keeper in which I bought low, and he is reasonable at $19. We can keep up to a max of 5 ( price tags increase up to $5 each year, but won’t get into all that). Flipped him for Moreland/Ryu ( neither would be kept) at the beginning of June. Was loving it at first…now he is just driving me nuts. I think he will be fine too…but each passing day makes me a little less confident.

            • Mike

              Mike says:
              (link)

@JoeMorgan’sMustache: Sounds a lot like my keeper league with the price inflation. Good price for him still. Has a lot more value in keepers. Seems like it was a solid trade even if you don’t reap the rewards of it this year.

              • JoeMorgan'sMustache says:
                (link)

@Mike: Thanks. Here’s hoping our Braves start to pick it up!
