Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Adam Jones is not on a great team.  He’s not hitting well.  Not to be blunt, but he doesn’t even look like he’s getting stoned anymore in his ESPN profile pic.  SOS to Adam Jones, it’s past 4:20, cuz.  Grab some Crunk Juice and be fire.  Right now, his BABIP, line drive rate, home run rate and walk rate are all way off.  Bundle some non-investment-grade triple-B bonds make it seem like a triple-A tranche and trade them for Adam Jones.  I.e. Add’em Jones.  I.e., Make it rain for Adam Jones.  I.e. Except After C.  Jones won’t be terrible forever.  Get in before everyone on your street owns an Adam Jones and then you just seem like a follower.  You have my money back guarantee.  Anyway, here’s some more players to buy or sell this week in fantasy baseball:

BUY

Alex Gonzalez – He will bat around .230 by the end of the year.  He adds the U C to sucks.  He needs a new neckerchief he has so many Demerit Badges, but he’s currently hitting, so there’s that.

Chris Coghlan – I don’t even like this schmohawk, but he’s not this bad.  You might be able to pull him away from a panicky owner with a past the due date Pink Sno Ball.

Mike Pelfrey – Here’s what I said the other day, “His K-rate prior to 2010 was pretty poor.  Even this year, it’s only a little above his career mark.  His biggest adjustment so far seems to be his ability to avoid the homer ball and leave men on base.  He won’t continue to leave men on base, but he can maintain his small strikeout and homer gains. You’re not looking at a total breakout, but he can be usable as a 4th fantasy starter, especially in Metco.”  And that’s me quoting me!  I’ll also add to buy him while his sinker is keeping bats off the Pelfrey.  Oofa!

Justin Duchscherer – I figured this guy was owned everywhere, then I see he’s only owned in 11% of ESPN leagues.  This just in, Duchscherer worth owning.

Jon Lester – If he doesn’t bounce back this week, he’ll probably have the lead-in of the Buy section next Friday.  Go and get Lester now!

Cameron Maybin – Contributing steals, runs and average in the leadoff spot.  Some power could come soon.  That’s so Maybin!

Mike Napoli – In the beginning of the year, Napoli got plutoed.  You’re a planet, you’re a planet, you’re getting declassified and catching batting practice.  So you dropped Crapoli already three times this year and now you’re having a hard time keeping down empty at-bats from Clement.  You’re thinking maybe it was better to have a DNP from Napoli than a DP/DS (Did Play/Did Suck) from Clement.  Well, it’s your catching scab and it’s choice to pick it.  Napoli’s playing again.  For now.  Will Scioscia find a way to screw you over again?  Prolly.

Ike Davis – The other day, I dedicated a roundup lead to Ike Davis.  He’s probably not that much better than Daniel Murphy.  That’s an insult for those not familiar with the Murphy oeuvre.  But if Davis hits, everyone will jump on the Davis and then you can flip him.  Hey, it’s the rookie trampoline.  Jump on them, them flip them but if you stay on it too long, you’ll fall and hurt yourself.

Justin Smoak – Scroll down to this morning’s post or click here.  Your choice.

Jeremy Hermida – The Random Outfielder Off Waivers That Is Currently Hitting Homers That May Not Be Hitting Homers In A Week.  Or ROOWTICHHTMNBHHIAW for those who find acronyms easier to remember.

Carlos Quentin – Early in the year I made a crack that he was like Robert De Niro in Awakenings.  Then he did nothing for two weeks and I started to think someone should stick a fork in Quentin to make sure he’s still alive.  Then I looked at his numbers.  He’s been unlucky.  Change gonna come, nephew.  It takes alligator blood to check raise to the bettor and go after a hitter that isn’t doing anything, but Quentin should get better.

Julio Borbon -  Take the Borbon off the shelf!

Juan Gutierrez – Gutierrez might be that pitcher you pickup only to watch him destroy your ERA and WHIP, then drop him only to watch him pitch well in the next game, then pick him up again3.  Or maybe that’s me.  I have a problem!

Brett Cecil – Besides having a name that sounds like a 1970′s pinup, Cecil has strikeout stuff, but was a bit wild last year.  Though that might’ve been an aberration because earlier in his minor league career his control was pretty sound.  I’d avoid outside of AL-Only leagues for now.

Alex Gordon – Every time I see Alex Gordon on waivers, I sing to myself, “Shooting at the walls of heartache… Bang, bang!”  I’m not sure if I’m the warrior, Patty Smyth or a fool for picking up Alex Gordon.

SELL

Scott Podsednik – Member that Nike commercial “I am Tiger Woods.”  Someone should do that commercial but use only super shady guys that look like they just stepped out of a peep show.  Scruffy looking guy with a trench coat, “I am Tiger Woods.”  Gary Glitter, “I am Tiger Woods.”  Pee Wee Herman, “I am Tiger Woods.”  That would be awesome.  Anyhoo, a fantasy baseball version of that commercial would be:  Nyjer Morgan, “I am Scott Podsednik.”  Michael Bourn, “I am Scott Podsednik.”  Rajai Davis, “I am Scott Podsednik.”  Don’t get caught up in overrating Podsednik because he’s hitting well and getting some hot lady action.

Austin Jackson – Leading the Major Leagues with 24 strikeouts; Mark Reynolds has 17.  Zoinks!  Austin Jackson’s days of hitting .300 won’t be long.

Vernon Wells – Tied for the league lead in homers with Nelson Cruz and Matt Kemp.  Right behind him, Pujols and Utley.  This could be a test to make sure you can move from 1st to 2nd grade.  Which name doesn’t fit?

Max Scherzer – A K/9 of 5.29, nearly 80% of men left on, an ERA of 2.12, a FIP of 4.62… You haven’t escaped, you’re dragging your feet on the inevitable.  A’la Ray Walston in Robert Altman’s Popeye, “Your pappy was a dragger and you’re a dragger.”

    I’m a little on the fence with Johan Santana… he’s pitched great his last couple starts and I was thinking of trying to unload him now before he regresses or breaks down.

    I’m in a 12-team keeper league, H2H. This is my first year in the league.. I inherited a dead-beat’s team. This year we kept 12, next year that is being cut to 6. Here is my team:

    C – Mike Napoli
    1B – Adrian Gonzalez
    2B – Dustin Pedroia
    SS – Jason Bartlett
    3B – Kevin Youkillis
    OF – Adam Lind
    OF – Jayson Werth
    OF – Chase Headley
    UT – Ian Stewart
    UT – Alex Rios
    BN – Justin Smoak
    BN – Jason Kubel
    BN – Alcides Escobar
    BN – Geovany Soto
    BN – Johnny Damon
    DL – Carlos Beltran

    SP – Johan Santana
    SP – Adam Wainwright
    SP – Mat Latos
    SP – Kevin Slowey
    SP – James Shields
    RP – Mariano Rivera
    RP – Jonathan Broxton
    RP – Heath Bell
    DL – Chris Young

    Scoring is as follows: Runs, RBI, Homeruns, SB, Average, Wins, Saves, K’s, ERA, WHIP

    I grabbed Napoli when Mathis hit the DL and was hoping to flip him or Soto for something better. So far.. no dice. I’ve been trying to get Bruce and Rasmus, but the guy that owns both is standing pat.

    Should I try to package Johan Santana with someone to get Jon Lester and Brett Anderson?

    What if I try to package Johan for Votto and then try to package Wainwright for Lester and Anderson?

    Obtaining Votto would really put me heavy at 1B though with Adrian Gonzalez, Smoak, and Youk all eligible.

    Any other suggestions would I might be able to trade to obtain Borbon or Quentin?

  6. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Ozzie: I’d want Johnson.

    @Wah: Trading Johan for Lester or Anderson doesn’t work for me. Johan for Votto isn’t bad, but not for your team. Trade Kubel, Damon and Soto for Quentin and Borbon. Anything to free up some room on your bench.

    @William: 15/10/.270

    @Grey: Standard league, who starts and who sits? I have three spots (2OF and U) for these five players: Headley(@Cin/Cueto), Damon (TEX/Feldman), Borbon (@DET/Scherzer), G. Sizemore (@OAK/Duchscherer), and Vlad(@DET/Scherzer)

    I’m thinking my best lineup is:
    C: Soto, Olivo
    1B/3B/CI: Miggy, Youk, Pena
    2B/SS/MI: MMD, Ass-Dribble, Kelly
    OF: Kemp, Werth, Sizemore, Span, Headley
    U: Vlad
    BN: Damon, Borbon

    Follow up on Steve’s third comment from the post earlier in the day (with the edit added):

    “I’m no baseball technician, which I guess is why I’m asking the question. Are you saying his swing is similar to Utley’s? To my inexpert eyes he hits a home run about as efficiently as it is possible to do so.”

    Because I am no scout in the visual sort of terms (I am still learning each day), here is an awesome breakdown of Smoak’s swing:

    http://www.drivelinemechanics.com/2008/12/27/702665/hitter-profile-justin-smoa
    (no, there isn’t missing any letters, namely the “k”, in the url.

    If you want to compare his swing to Utley’s, here’s a YouTube video of Utley’s swing.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLZTOTilC4w

    Steve, you are right, they are pretty similar and Smoak hits homers with great efficiency.

    I was going to ask if you’re starting Scherzer but I guess I got my answer. Hopefully he doesn’t have a “Disaster Start” (Rob Neyer’s term for when ER > IP. Couldn’t pick a more clever phrase? And why do I always spell it Rober Neyer first before correcting?) tonight and I can trade him.

  14. Bob says:

    Dotel or Gutierrez as your last closer?

  15. ron mexico's papi says:

    @Grey: Quentin’s LD% has dropped to 11.4% from his career average of 15.7%. Every other year is around 15%-16%. So, I guess what I be sayin’ is, could it just be that maybe he is starting to suck? I also see that his BABIP is way low at .167, but part of why it is down is fewer line drives, right?

  16. William says:

    @Dangerous Summer -

    Great question – I’d like to know about Billingsley too… I passed on him and picked the WandyWagon instead during my draft, but then regretted it right after the draft ended… I still have one eye open on Bills though.

    @ Grey:
    Drop Rajai for Borbon? Pretty lateral i think. Also, trade Liriano 4 Jose Reyes? The guy didn’t bite on Choo 4 Liriano. I was also able 2 get Kelly off waivers for Desmond. Yeah!

    Garrett Jones + Ervin Santana for Brett Anderson?

  30. Howard says:
    (link)

    @Grey Thinkin of making a play for the aformentioned Mr. Jones. What I have to offer: Manny, Tori Hunter or Ibanez? Deal? ty

    And to be clear, the budget is $100 for the season with weekly transactions. I even confused me when I reread that.

  32. Tom Reale says:
    (link)

    So a buy on Borbon but a sell on Rajai? I’m confused. Do you not like Rajai for around .290 anymore? I took him in the last round for R, SB and decent avg. He’s top 12 in runs. #1 in SB’s. I realize Borbon is in a much better lineup but he also went 10 rounds earler. School me on this Prof.

    Maybin is right behind Ajax at 22 K’s. A trend that I hope does not continue as a Maybin fan.

    @William: Jones

    @tHe ShiT: I wouldn’t own Kubel.

    @TheEvilEmpire: That’s his boy.

    @PureBwa: I’d take Anderson.

    @ron mexico’s papi: $11, $7 and $3

    @Howard: Any of them, in reverse order.

    @Tom Reale: Where did I say sell Rajai? But to be devil’s advocate, Borbon’s owned in 72% of ESPN leagues and Rajai’s 99%. Borbon’s the same guy.

    I drafted Gordon with the 252nd pick, good spot for his upside, I thought.

    When he came off the DL and also when he hit that game-winning HR, an image of Brian Blessed as Prince Vultan of the Hawkmen blurting out, “Gordon’s alive?!” popped into my head.

    If Gordo does well, I might change my team name to that and use a Vultan head shot for the logo.

    Brad Lincoln
    The Gettysburg Address

    Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
    Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived, and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met here on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of it as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

    But in a larger sense we can not dedicate – we can not consecrate – we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled, here, have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember, what we say here, but can never forget what they did here.

    It is for us, the living, rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they have, thus far, so nobly carried on. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us – that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here gave the last full measure of devotion – that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain; that this nation shall have a new birth of freedom; and that this government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

    thx. yeah. he’s hard to get a bead on. don’t have him, thinking about trying to trade for him. my 3B right now is uribe/callaspo matchups, so you can see. beckham’s maybe not a perfect target since 2B is his big value position and i already have pedroia/cano at 2B/MI so that doesn’t help me at all. but a lot of the midrange 3B seem to be 2B/3B this year (beckham, stewart, polanco, mcgehee, etc)

    @wily mo: I have him in an 8 team H2H league, and I’m planning on hanging on to him for a little while longer (he ain’t gettin’ no PT, though). The rest of my team is on fire (Cruz, Kemp, Utley, BeejUp, Stewart), and they’re carrying me to the promised land right now…so I’m hoping I can ride out his shit storm until he figures out how to bend it again.

  85. @Grey:

    what caliber of pitcher do you think could/should be paired with adrian beltre to get ian stewart?

  92. @Grey:

    Oh definitely. Just I remembered Ethier in particular going cold after the suspension…Looking back at the stats he had 6 HR on 5/8 and didn’t hit another one for 3 weeks after the suspension. Pierre was red hot as the replacement so the team as a whole didn’t miss a beat.

    In a bit of a dilemma – I have Aaron Hill coming back of the DL and need to make room for him. I have Qualls, Gregg, Nunez, and Cordero as my closers, with Lidge set to come off the DL by the end of the month. I hate dropping closers but don’t really have anyone else who I’m somewhat willing to part with – do I drop Qualls to get Hill back into the active lineup?

  106. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @AZhardball: Sweet… I’d go with Alexei and Alcides.

    @wakeNbake: I’d want Hamilton.

    @sean: I’d take Lester and Adam Jones, if that’s the Jones you mean.

    @Joe B: Smoak

    @joe: Sure

    @nick m.: I wouldn’t ever drop Qualls, but at of those guys, you have no other choice, I guess.

  109. mrbaseball says:
    (link)

    @nick – I have Aaron Hill coming back of the DL – who is now playing 2B for you

  110. ThePoonTycoon says:
    (link)

    @Grey: @joey joe joe jr shabadoo: if someone offered me beltre + cj wilson for ian stewart i couldn’t reject that offer fast enough.

    if you want stewart and you are offering beltre as their replacement 3B, i think you are gonna have to offer a pretty solid and proven SP. at least until beltre shows some signs of life.

    my advice if you want stewart is to sit on beltre till he gets hot and stewart slumps a bit and then try to pull something.

  111. sean says:
    (link)

    @Grey: Indeed.

  112. nick m. says:
    (link)

    @mrbaseball: I have Zobrist at 2B/OF right now, so he has been able to hold the fort.

  113. ThePoonTycoon says:
    (link)

    @nick m.: who else is on the end of your bench? do you have a travis snider type flier who hasn’t really done enough to warrant anyone immediately scooping him or have any trade value?

  114. nick m. says:
    (link)

    @ThePoonTycoon: The only other guys I could see dropping would be Jose Guillen, Billingsley, or Marcum – no one really unproductive. I’ve been able to snag some of the faster starters who should stick (Guillen, Rasmus, Gregg). The problem is that the league is very averse to trades, so I haven’t been able to consolidate even though I’ve been offering trades a little skewed toward the opposition even…

  115. @Grey: Gotta call shenanigans. While I see some definite regression for Austin Jackson, I’m not quite sure why he’s a sell when Maybin’s a buy. They’re almost the same player.

    Peep the 8.2%/32.8% BB/K rate for Maybin and a similarly unsustainable .409 BABIP. Interestingly Maybin had a .385 BABIP in 343 AAA PA’s last year, while AJax had a .384 BABIP. So both will have higher than usual BABIPs due to speed. AJax’s splits of 9.7%/36.9% BB/K aren’t that far off. Check out their LD% though: Maybe: 14%, AJax 32.5%.

    Don’t get me wrong, I’m high on both – and own both in different leagues, and maybe I’d prefer Maybin by a hair (little more pop, little more speed) but if you’d sell (or buy) on one you may as well say sell on the other. I don’t think AJax will hit .300 at year’s end but I don’t think .285 is out of the question. Maybin the same. They’ll probably both end up with similar OBPs too. I’d prefer to buy both, since unless they’re totally incompetent a la Carlos Gomez, they’re going to score runs.

  116. mrbaseball says:
    (link)

    @123 nick – maybe there is no rush to take Hill off the DL – someone else might take his spot by weeks end (not that Hill was tearing up the ball at the moment)

  117. nick m. says:
    (link)

    @mrbaseball: that’s kind of what i was thinking as well – i used up my weekly moves preparing for next week mainly because i figured i had no spot for hill at the moment and didn’t want to be locked out of moves. i wish they’d just put zimmerman on the DL for a bit…

  118. TheBravesWearPrado says:

  119. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @mrbaseball: Ha!

    @3FingersBrown: You make fair points. Austin’s over .300 and Maybin’s under so Maybin stays around what he is, while Austin comes down, so that’s how they ended up where they are. I.e., Austin’s going down, Maybin’s staying similar and good.

    @TheBravesWearPrado: Ha

    Regression is a b*tch. Thanks Garza.

  131. @Grey: I hear you. If they were lefties, I’d call them both Fetal-Grand.

  134. Wow look at The Pod people up by TD and a FG at halftime! Without my Blankman nonetheless. Correia putting up gooses eggs! 7 in a row?! They’re looking like the Mariners-lite.

    @Schlitzy: Hope so.

  138. @Schlitzy: I think it has more to do with his long swing. Similar plate coverage. He’s not a bomber, he’s a line drive hitter, who looks at his best when he’s going the other way. His dad (former player, Ron) was saying so much the other night.

    Of course if he’s strong enough to go deep the other way, tits!

    @Grey: RE: Fister, I was hoping your gut would differ from mine, mais non. If Duch can pull out the W tonight (possible now that the A’s posted a 3-spot in the 6th), I’ll be tantalizingly close (in my main H2H league) in Ws (down 1-3), up in Ks (35-32), comfortable lead in ERA, okay lead in WHIP. Remaining SPs for me:

    Nolasco @Col
    Kershaw @Was
    Price vs. Tor

    Remaining SPs for him:
    Lilly @Mil
    Niemann vs. Tor
    Hanson @NYM

    Would rather bench Nolasco @Coors in an attempt to hold the ERA/WHIP leads, but if I’m gonna’ have a shot at Ws and Ks, I’m gonna’ have to throw everyone. Perhaps I’ll spot start someone on Sunday depending on how Saturday plays out. You like any of these?

  201. @Grey: Guy in my league is interested in Jeter. I’m thinking of offering him The Captain and Madson (his closer situation is shakier than mine) for Bartlett and a pitcher – he has Garza, but I think that’s asking too much. I’ll offer, but I’m almost sure it’ll be refused.

(that was even before the second homer!) it could all be a mirage, absolutely. but hey. if he actually finally realized that his career was spiraling the drain and got himself in shape for once this year… it’s not like he doesn’t have talent.

    @Grey: After the Sat. trade, my SPs will be Halladay/Greinke/Johnson/Nolasco/Price/Scherzer/Duchscherer. I’d sooner drop Scherzer, but Duch is only owned in 16.1% of leagues (compared to Scherzer’s 99.8%), so I feel like I can get him back easier… plus I’m currently shopping Scherzer. I may not drop anyone, in the end. It’ll depend on how Saturday plays out. And my opponent just picked up Masterson, so if he’s gonna’ load up at SP, I’d rather just hang onto Duch after another QS with a W and let my opponent stream a victory in Ks (and possibly Ws).

    Regardless, thank you for the advice, as always.

  207. @longbeachyo: If you can sustain the hit to your AVG that you’ll take, I would do it. I have Pujols and McGehee on this team with Jeter. We use OBP, so I feel that with Albert, J-Will, Swish, the loss of Jete’s OBP wouldnt be that bad. I’ve also got plenty of power to cover for the loss of a few dingers.

    Matusz is the realness huh? I haven’t watched a whole game of his, just highlights. I see great numbers but AL East scares me and the O’s defense is dreadful. -7.2 RngR worst in baseball and -6.9 UZR, forth worst.

    So you’d take Bartlett/Matusz > Jeter/Madson ? 6×6 standard + OBP/QS
    I definitely could use another dependable, high K arm.

    this is a keeper, where a players is kept for where he was drafted, so I believe that Matusz was a 16th round pick.

  209. @Grey: So I’ll turn it to the man: Bartlett/Matusz > Jeter/Madson ? keeper league Jete = 1st round pick. Matusz = 16th round pick

    @wakeNbake:

    Scherzer. Read Grey’s blurb about him in the “sell” column here. If that doesn’t convince you, I don’t know what will. And Lackey should definitely be owned. He got rocked by a Tampa Bay team that was incredibly hot. I’m sure only 2-3 pitchers would have been able to avoid that barrage

    Billingsley article from -http://www.memoriesofkevinmalone.com/2010/04/whats-wrong-with-chad-billingsley.html

    Since last year, there has been rampant speculation that Billingsley was either injured or losing his raw stuff, but those assumptions seem rather premature. The fact of the matter is that Billingsley’s velocity hasn’t fallen off by any significant margin from the past couple years, and if anything, his off-speed stuff is showing more break, not less.

    So What’s Going On Then?
    Are the Dodgers even aware of this trend? Because it seems silly to me. Almost half of the pitches thrown by Billingsley are now some variation of his cutter/slider hybrid, and since his first name is not Mariano, and his last name is not Rivera, I find the pitch selection a bit ridiculous.

    Furthermore, I would be remissed if I failed to mention that Billingsley hardly ever throws a four seam fastball anymore. Sure, he seems to now rely on a pitch that is classified as a two seam fastball, but i’m not totally sure if that is an actual switch or not.

    That brings me to my next point: Billingsley’s fastball doesn’t move as much as it used to. The vertical movement (in inches) from the first half of 2009 was 9.98, but in the second half, it was down to 8.97. Now? 6.91. The horizontal movement (in inches) went from -4.84 in the first half of 2009, to -3.66 in the second half, to -2.74 this year. Now I would normally say it’s a potential sample size issue, but looking at each individual game in 2010, it’s the trend in every start.

    What it means is that Billingsley is throwing his fastball with less rotation, thus causing less “lift”, and his fastball doesn’t have as much arm side tail as it did before. For those non-math majors out there, that’s three inches of “lift” and two inches of tail that are now gone from his fastball. Rather than an injury or a raw stuff problem, I think this issue calls into question Billingsley’s mechanics, or more specifically, his release point.

    So What About The Mechanics?

    An obvious difference that should immediately pop out at you is the higher leg kick on the left. In early 2009, Billingsley stood tall throughout his motion, but yesterday he was almost crouching over in his motion. The fact that he used to stay upright for much longer seems to have affected the way in which he approaches his release. Since being more upright leads to his front shoulder being higher and his left knee not bending as much, Billingsley’s motion used to take a more downhill plane. I don’t know if you guys can see it, but Billingsley seemed to be “pushing” the ball towards the plate yesterday instead of “reaching out” towards his target like he was early last year.

    So What Are The Options?

    Trade Him

    This obviously depends on what the Dodgers could get for him, but given the current state of his value, it’s probably unwise to shop Billingsley at this stage. I doubt the Dodgers would get anything better than him in return, so I fail to see the point of this option. After all, the Dodgers need more pitching, not less.

    Designate Him

    This isn’t feasible, simply because he would never clear waivers. You might think he’s trash now, but to other teams, getting Billingsley would be an absolute bargain.

    Bullpen Banishment

    This is an option, but i’m not sure what it would accomplish. Perhaps it would make more sense if the Dodgers had a viable starter just waiting to get a chance, then Billingsley could go slowly work on his mechanics in the bullpen, but even if he has to work his struggles out on the mound, it’s likely that Billingsley is better than any alternative option.

    So What Should They Do With Him Then?

    Honestly? Either skip a start to work with him on mechanics or do nothing and let him work through it.

    If his struggles continue, then a move will eventually have to be made, but for now, Billingsley has only had three 2010 starts, and there are other great pitchers who are struggling just as bad, so patience might be the most prudent response here. Though I must admit that my patience nowadays is not so much a reflection of my unwaving confidence in Billingsley, but rather because the Dodgers simply don’t have anything better.

    mrbaseball says

    I agree with The Mechanics thing – but he is over rated anyway – he only gives you 6 innings at the most which limits his K’s – I looked over last years September stats – he was giving up 3 or 4 runs a game – you would expect 2 to 3 runs per game but at least he was not lit up for 7 or 8 runs – it would be nice if he cut down on his walks also and the league was hitting .248 aganst him which was not bad considering he did go into a funk last year – hey no one is in a panic over Justin Verlander – I would give him another 4 or 5 starts and see what happens if I was the Dodgers as a fantasy owner you are stuck with him – I see him as a number 4 starter for your team with an upside to a number 3 starter

    In my RCL league my MI is patched together (Asdrubal, Alexei, A-Gonz) and I’m pretty stocked with SPs (Johan, Lester, Price, JJohnson, Liriano) so I traded Asdrubal and AJ Burnett for Brandon Phillips and Kerry Wood. If Wood comes back to get saves I think it’s great for me (our league is really aggressive on saves–there’s nothing on the wire). If he doesn’t, I think it’s still pretty good and I got an upgrade at 2B from a position I could spare.

    Curious for anyone’s thoughts on in or what I could learn from it now that it’s a done deal. I think I still have pitching to sell.

    Is the Haren side enough to get it done? I’m very aware of harens second half slides, and i know his first few outtings have been shaky and i’m not just attempting to move him bc of that. Is this balanced? TOO MUCH?

    If this deal was accepted my pitching stafff in a H2H league with a 32 inning min would be Garza, Sanchez, nolasco, DLR, Hughes, soria, bell, wagner, dotel and morales….. Plus the KEMP upgrade would make my line up pretty sick.

    THANKS.

  243. Bob says:

    @Grey: I know you’ve recommended Lester. However, given the pathetic nature of Boston’s catcher situation, does every pitcher on their team risk becoming a Chris Young (every walk is a double). I like Buchholz, but I’m kinda staying away from him for now. Same with Lester. I’ve never liked Beckett, and I’m not huge on Lackey either (being a bitter Angels fan has nothing to do with it). Yeah, if I recall, Grey was waiting this last start from Cueto too before dropping him, or at least, advising to drop him.

  298. BKK says:
    (link)

    @Eddy: I’d hate to lose Slowey too but I think you have to do that deal. Santana is borderline droppable right now, so it almost becomes Reyes for Slowey and that’s not even close.

  299. BKK says:
    (link)

    @BKK: I found it:

    Hawpe leaves first game early: Rockies OF Brad Hawpe left the opening game of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Marlins because of tightness in his left quad. Ryan Spilborghs came on for Hawpe in the top of the fifth inning. Hawpe apparently aggravated the injury while running out a ground ball in the bottom of the fourth inning.

  300. Lava says:

    So what do you guys think about CJ Wilson? Looking for a player to drop Cueto for. I like him, but my pitching is strong with Ubaldo, Slowey, Baker, Oswalt, Lester, and Masterson. If CJ Wilson stays consistent, I could trade one of the pitchers for some hitting.

    Or, I could pick up Ike Davis and hope his value increases, or Kelly Johnson as a good UTIL player that could stick with my team.

    @Grey:Sorry Grey. To clarify. I like Maybin but am I a fool not to consider the speed of Borbon and Morgan.They are both in your top 40ish while Maybin is 71st OF on your list. I just got offered Lester and Adam Jones for Jose Reyes and Chad Billingsley in one of my leagues. Should I do it? what do you think?

    @Bostonbeerman: Borbon

    @Principal Blackman: It’s fair depends on your needs. What happened to the other deal that was good for you?

    @Howie Met Your Mother: I said to sell Heyward the day after he hit his first bomb. I don’t think he’s getting much now, but you can try and package him with F-Her and get Braun. Either way, your team’s weakness is your team’s strength. You have way too much pitching. You don’t need three number one pitchers. In H2H, you barely need one.

    This is my first time doing H2H, but we have a 45 inning minimum to throw out each week. And in my defense, I got JV and Lester at a decent value. And it’s odd you mention Braun, as his owner’s top 3 SPs are Billingsley, Dempster and…no one.

  322. Principal Blackman says:
    (link)

    @Grey: The other deal is in a separate league. I’m in discussions with the guy for Lester. And he likes Fra-gu a lot, but he needs a little something more to part with Lester. Really I was just trying to assess whether or not the move seemed fair. We’ll see what happens.

    As far as the Jones/Lester deal goes, I think I’m going to have to accept this guy’s offer. The league is 9×9 and most of the pitching stats are rate based: era, obp against, k/bb, k/9, h/9 & bb/9 in addition to Ws, SVs, & Holds. It’s a pretty deep league with 16 teams and 25-man rosters, so good pitching is not very easy to come by (Jensen Lewis and Brian Duensing are currently the top ranked pitchers in the FA pool. Steals on the other hand are not so hard to come by. Borboner, Ever-cab and Pierre are all dangling on the waiver wire.

    Keeper conundrum…..my league has no bench spots except for one for a minor leaguer (must be “NA” in yahoo). We must cut a player within 24 hours of our minor leaguer being called up to make room for them on our active roster. So Smoak was my bench guy and when he got called up it sucked because since it is a keeper league I wanted to hold onto him and had to cut a roster player I did not want to. Now I have Carlos Santana as my minor leaguer and McCann is my current catcher. Obviously if/when Santana gets called up I wont cut McCann so I want to move McCann bad.

    Currently I have Billy Butler (want to move b/c of Smoak) & McCann out for Joey Votto & Bengie Molina. It was the best I could think of but the owner told me probably not, he’s going to mull it though, he’s got Prince so he can afford to lose Votto.

    Does anyone have any suggestions for who to go after with McCann & Butler to fill either a 1B, OF or SP (I’d be open to including Price to upgrade SP) spot?

    I feel like I will probably stand pat for now and hope Santana doesnt get called up for a while….24 hour deadlines suck in fantasy, even if you get a trade done, it’s not long enough to process

  333. BKK says:
    (link)

    @Tom Emanski: I want Reyes there.

    On another note, I get a vulture win from Rauch which is some consolation, but I only had Guerrier handcuffed to Rauch i none of those leagues. Why can’t I have my cake and eat it too?

    Just wanted to give a little update to any Kinsler owners since he’s dropped off the map for a while:

    Kinsler (ankle) could return to the Rangers in time for the team’s series against the Mariners, ESPNDAllas.com reports.

    “I’d like him to play three nine-inning rehab games first to see where he is,” manager Ron Washington said. That would give Kinsler enough time to return for the M’s series, which begins April 30.

  346. eltoo says:
    (link)

    @Buddo Chezuski: It is something that is self regulatory, like AL KOHOLIC says he can roster NA guys same as everyday players. The league commissioner checks rosters at the end of the day and cuts your bench player if they are not an “NA” guy so once they come up you have to make a move that day. Since I have Carlos Santana as my bench player I want to move McCann and fill my catcher spot with some schmohawk that I will have no problem cutting if Carlos is called up.

  388. @Grey: Although the Orange Seats were my 2nd living room, I think anywhere aside from The Astrodome was better than Shea. Had it’s charm though – much easier to get away with questionable behavior.

    Aside from the overwhelming number of ad billboards, and Wilpon’s irritating fascination with The Dodgers, Metco is really a beautiful place to go see a game. The food and brew selection are top notch. Growing up going to games at Shea and Yankee Stadium, it seems little bougie to have Danny Meyer’s restaurants and cocktails at a game, but I can’t hate on good taste.

  389. Ari says:
    (link)

    @Grey: That’s what I thought. I figure Qualls and Capps will have similar stats by the end off the year and Tex is going start hitting at some point and definitely outproduce Reynolds.

  391. Ari says:

    @Grey: Borbon is available but I’m not sure who to drop or if I should really grab him, is he another Rajai Davis cause I already have him. Take a look at my roster and let me know what you think. Also I only have one SS and one 2B on my team can you suggest some guys I cold pick up? Thanks.

    I know which is why I don’t want to cut him cause he might start hitting at some point but even if not he’ll keep those numbers coming.
    plus I’m a huge A’s fan so I don’t like cutting my guys ;-)

  396. Bobby Nice says:
    (link)

    Grey: Would you trade the Big FraGu straight up for A. Jones? Do you think Franky will cool down or is he breaking out? I’m also thinking about packaging the FraGu with a SP because the guy with Jones picked him relatively high and I got FraGu off waivers. He’s that type of trade dude.
    I also have Borbon and Blanks, so maybe I could package one of those guys with a SP to get Jones. Maybe a better idea?
    I think Franklin batting 3rd in that lineup will get him at least 90 – 100 RBI’s, but he doesn’t have the power of Adam. I’m thinking no, but I typically trust your instincts with this type of thing.
    Waddya think?

  397. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @3FingersBrown: Yeah, everywhere’s gone bougie.

    @Joe: Lester will get better, and it looks like you have a few slow starters. Matt Harrison shouldn’t be owned.

    @Ari: Rajai and Borbon are the same player. I have no idea who’s on your waivers.

    @Bobby Nice: Adam Jones, sure. Depends what SP.

    So… I’ve been trying to quantify Smoak in the most basic of FBB value terms. From what I’ve read, it seems like the shallowest league you’d want to take a chance on him is 12-team mixed (standard cats and rosters)… and that’s only if you’re not satisfied with a 1B/CI/UTIL or you have a bench spot available. He doesn’t appear to be worth a flier in any league shallower than that, as he’ll be as good as other FA bats, even at his best. You agree with that rough assessment?

    Hopefully just a bruise.

    PHOENIX — D-backs right fielder Justin Upton left Sunday’s game with the Phillies in the sixth inning with a left shin bruise, one inning after fouling a pitch off his left leg.

    In the bottom of the fifth, Upton swung at a 1-0 offering from Kyle Kendrick and appeared to foul it off his left ankle. He immediately went down to the ground, but got up quickly and after being examined by assistant athletic trainer Dave Edwards. Upton stayed in the game.

    Upton wound up drawing a walk in the at-bat and scored one batter later when Mark Reynolds hit a three-run homer to center.

    When the D-backs took the field for the top of the sixth, Cole Gillespie was in right field in place of Upton.

  516. @Grey: Two part question

    Jeter/McGehee for Bartlett/Beckett

    I would pick up one of the following MI off of waivers:
    (I need R/AVG/SB > HR/RBI/OBP)

    A. Gonzalez/Desmond/F-Lopez/Uribe/Brignac/Blanco Polanco

    Which do you like?

    Grey, do you like Wade Davis or Jaime Garcia the rest of the year?

    Mets game called.

  520. @Mojo the Helper Monkey: Nice!

    Yeah it’s raining hard Uptown. My wife jacked the TV to watch It’s Always Sunny anyway…

    @Grey: Would you do it for Garza instead of Beckett?

    Which side? J. Johnson/Quentin or Vazquez/Lind

    evaluate the trade: howard, price, quentin/bourn/FraGu vs sizemore/baker/butler.

    re quentin/bourn/FraGu – which do you consider the best option ROS?

  523. @Grey: My bad for being unclear.

    First priority is to get a solid starter. What I meant about AVG/R, is that I’d need decent compensation for losing Jete’s numbers.

    @Grey:

    I just got offered Matt Holliday and Heath Bell for Stephen Drew and Curtis Granderson.

    I REALLY hate to give up Grandy, but the fact of the matter is I received Reyes in a trade yesterday and I simply don’t need Drew.

    My current closers are Aardsma, Dotel, Jim Johnson, Lindstrom.

    My OF left would be Werth, Bruce, Adam Jones, Rajai, and Quentin .

    Do I pull the trigger?

    @3FingersBrown: So why not get a solid NL starter?

    @Eddy: I’d want Holliday.

    @Grey:

    Thanks, I pulled the trigger.

    So how would you rank my total trades these past couple of days?

    I gave up:

    Granderson
    Stephen Drew
    Slowey
    Ervin Santana

    I received:

    Jose Reyes
    Heath Bell
    Matt Holliday

  527. @Grey: I’m trying, believe me. Hard to find a suitor that fits since I need to get a decent SS also if I’m going to move Jete.

    Very tough to make a major trade until the stretch in this h2h/keeper league. Then it usually becomes a matter of the contending teams trading picks to the doormats to fill needs. I would like to avoid doing that (again) since that’s how I end up with these holes.

    Maybe Yunel and Nolasco.

    Another guy’s got Aybar and Johan. I covet Ubaldo, but his owner’s insane.

  528. Y’know what, now that you’ve got the shiny new forums rockin’, I’m going to stop being a mope and put them to use for this kind of discussion.

    Thanks man.

    Hey should I bail on Brandon Phillips? All he does is melt my batting average each week.

    Should I drop him for somebody like Callaspo or Howie Kendrick?

    I just hopped on the Bret Cecil C Train. Choo Choo. Next stop, Cy Youngsville.

    The bar stayed open extra late tonight…
