Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

He looks like he’s ready to be a Matt Holliday-sized bat in the middle of the Cardinals order.  He looked that way last year too.   Oscar Taveras had numerous setbacks this year due to a high-ankle sprain that occurred on May 12th.  In 46 games in Triple-A, he hit 5 homers and stole 5 bags while hitting .306.  It was a lost year like your sophomore year in college.  He’s still plenty young enough that it shouldn’t matter.  He’ll turn 22 years old in June.  Here’s what I said last year, “From what I’ve heard (read), Taveras’s biggest strike against him is he doesn’t see any strikes — turn of a phrase point!  He’s being compared to Vladimir Guerrero without having knees like Mama from Mama’s Family.  Taveras swings and hits everything.  Also, like Vlad, his swing is long, unwieldy and it looks like he could swing at pitches above his head and in the dirt on two consecutive pitches.  (Google video of Oscar Taveras if you don’t believe me; what, you don’t believe me?  My feelings are hurt.)  What wasn’t mentioned above, his stats also look like a young Vlad.  I will call you, Vladimir Guerrerito.  He can hit for power and steal bases.  At twenty years old, he hit 23 homers in 477 ABs with 11 steals in Double-A in 2012, his last full year of minor league ball.”  And that’s me quoting me!  Nothing’s changed on any of that but the calendar date, assuming you flip the months and don’t wait for them to magically flip themselves.  So what can we expect of Oscar Taveras for 2014 fantasy baseball?

So, there could be a chance for Taveras out of camp, but my guess is we don’t see him until May, at the earliest.  He needs a month in the minors after having season-ending surgery on his ankle in August.  I should say, I don’t think he needs a month in the minors, but I think the Cardinals will think it.  Plus, the Cardinals make lemonade out of guys that would be 5th outfielders.  Put Jon Jay on any other team and he’s a glorified bat boy that looks at the star player in creepy ways.  Put Jon Jay on the Cardinals and he gets 548 at-bats in 157 games played.  Beltran could be gone after this year, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they put Craig in the outfield and Adams at first base.  Shoot, they could put Sugar Shane Robinson in the outfield and get a mediocre 500 ABs from him and win the division.  I’m spending so much time on the playing time situation for Taveras, because that will really be the key to his fantasy worthiness, which isn’t related to James Worthy, but really should be.  If O.T. gets 500 ABs, he’s 10-team viable.  If he gets 300 ABs, he’s 10-team viable, but not until June.  Unfortch, I think 300 ABs is what he’s gonna see.  For 2014, I’ll give him the line of 42/10/32/.288/8.  Definitely a great guy for deep leagues and keepers, and has a chance to make a Wil Myers-type impact next year.  In most redraft leagues, I’ll be looking to take a flyer in case he does break camp with the team, but I wouldn’t hold my breath unless I were wearing Scuba apparatus.

Another potential stud for the Cards. I hope to get him on my keepers team. Gosh what a frustratingly excellent organization.. now I’m stuck rooting for them (NL for life!). If O.T. is like Vlad, I’ll become a big fan. Vlad was awesome. Lost his only World Series though.. Hope that doesn’t happen to Beltran.

Thanks for another great Razzball season Grey. Obviously, I’m not ready for it to end. At least my boss won’t be hearing me yell “Au Shizz” at random times of the day.

Basically the first and most important rule you learn when getting SCUBA certified is to never hold your breath. So analogy fail! But agree on Taveras. Hopefully the hype machine lays back and enough people are scared off by his 2013.

I’m in a 16 team 6 by 6 keeper league with OPS and QS and my four for sure keepers are McCutchen, Miggy, David Price and Shelby Miller. I’m in kinda a bind on who to keep for my fifth keeper but I’m leaning towards Michael Wacha or even fat Matt Adams. But I also have guys like Oscar, Billy Hamilton, Brad Miller, Sonny Grey, Chris Archer, Anthony Rendon and maybe even Arica… I know the first guys I mentoned will probably have the most fantasy impact but I’m still not sure which guy I should keep. If you could list the top three guys that would be great and once again nice year on your predictions and all your expert advice!!!

  8. Mark says:

I’m in a league where teams get to keep 8 players with no limits on term at all (no salary, no draft slot, nothin). It’s kind of ridiculous.

I can trade David Price plus a 5th or 6th round draft pick for Freddie Freeman. I’m short on hitting and long on pitching, but it sounds like a lot for Freeman.

I’m also trying to peg out an offer of Price + Profar for Cano, which seems better to me.

My other keepers are Gerritt Cole, Shelby Miller, Jose Fernandez, Troy Tulowitzki, Yasiel Puig, Allen Craig, Jurickson Profar and maybe Matt Adams or Alex Gordon. What should I do?

    • Grey

      Grey says:

  9. Swagger Jackers says:

@Grey I have a hard time justifying drafting summer call up guys. Maybe I’m not in deep enough leagues but having AAA players rotting on my bench for several months while Corbin and Matt Carpenter types rise from the waiver wire wasteland always makes me pull the trigger.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Guys like this are worth drafting for your bench, in case they break camp with the team… If they go to the minors, you cut them in shallower mixed leagues…

I can only keep 3 my keepers Are Puig, Jose Fernandez, Adam Jones, But. ..I have Wacha and he’s $1 also same as puig. I’m debating taking Wacha instead of Puig then using rounds 1-9 on bats cuz I really only need 2 Aces with high K rates right? Need help with my drafting strategy guru…

@Grey: I meant how many full time pitchers “Aces” should I carry? I had better luck syreaming matchups last season than riding the same 5 SP’s I drafted. What about trying to trade puig for Segura? That should be done instead right? Same contract. I’ll have a great SS for 3 years! His owner may be interested.

@Grey: haha 12 team. .Just saying I only had 68 wins last week of Aug I finished with 94 and won the category after being in 7th place in wins. I ran the numbers and my streaming era & K rate was almost identical to my rostered aces. Not saying that level of success can be duplicated next season. I’m well aware of variance, just wanted to pick your brain since you’ve been doing this almost as long as the dinosaurs roamed the earth. Thought I read somewhere where you said you stuck with 2 SP “Aces” Ex- Kershaw, Waino, all year then streamed the rest of you’re pitching?

@matt: @matt: last thought. .Koji. . You think he’s playing next year? Or retire. Guys been lights out in the post-season. He is the only guy on the mound for boston that I’m worried about. My teams gonna eat up that starting rotation! Can’t wait. .1st time in a long time that the two best teams ( recordwise) made it to the fall classic. Cardinals in 5!!!!!

I am currently looking at Encarnacion, David Wright, Braun, Ellsbury, Craig as definite keepers. Rios, Molina and Shields are keeper level players, but all are getting older, so not sure if all would be kept. Liriano, Wacha & Bogaerts all probably make the cut (love Bogaerts). There are also Wheeler, Danny Salazar, Miguel Sano & CJ Wilson to consider. I also have the #1 overall pick in the supplemental draft. Draft Buxton and wait it out, or take the best available non-keeper with the pick?
