And we have our first Disgraceful List of the season and the season hasn’t even started yet (really). I hate to say I told you so, so (stutterer!) instead, I’ll just quote the relevant text from earlier this preseason, “(Michael Pineda) is young so there’s plenty of time to see how well he adjusts. For now, I’m going to let someone else take the chance on him. What it really comes down to is it’s not very difficult to find solid starters, so there’s no reason to take unnecessary risk.” And that’s me quoting me! Zadow! I feel like I’ve exorcised a demon when I tell you to avoid someone and they bust. (Oh, and Rudy told you to avoid him too at his risky pitchers post.) It makes me feel so good. Schadenfreude! Can you feel my excitement? You know those struggling artists from touristy beach towns that draw caricatures in coal? I’m gonna hire one of them and one of those skywriting airplanes and have them draw a giant mustache in the sky above your house. I might also have the pilot wear a burlap sack. Why? Cause it’s a crazy person mocking you, that makes it even worse! Now, if you ignored our advice and drafted him, this was actually the best case scenario, because now you can DL him, before it looked like you were just gonna have to watch him in the minors while on your bench. Anyway, here’s what else I saw in spring training for 2012 fantasy baseball:
Andrew Bailey – Even with bad news, the Red Sox won’t accept being upstaged by the Yankees. Bailey hurts thumb, gives fantasy owners the finger. The injury could force him to the DL to start the season. Oh, won’t you stay healthy Andrew Bailey, Andrew Bailey? “Is it me or is this the news once a month for him, “Andrew Bailey has been cleared to start throwing.” Hey, Bailey, throw already!” That’s me quoting me from last year! It’s same shizz different day/month/year with Bailey. It was announced that the Sawx would turn to Aceves first if (when?) Bailey hits the DL. Then Bobby Valentine made a wrap sandwich, because he invented them and likes to talk about that.
Daniel Bard – Ended up being named the Sawx’s fifth stahter as he was Bard from the bullpen. Outside of AL-Only leagues, I’d be very cautious about trusting him. He’s a bit allergic to throwing strikes and by the fifth inning Valentine may bee pollen him. Take it, Highlights Magazine, it’s yours!
Juan Francisco – Was traded to the Braves to “temporarily” fill-in for Glass Chipper. In the offseason, I said I wanted to take off my Zubaz and wear all the Reds rookies (Cozart, Francisco and Mesoraco) as pants. Then I went caca-cuckoo for Cozart and Mesoraco for the next three months, but left Francisco alone because Dusty wasn’t going to play him. Well, guess what, over-the-Internet friend, Francisco just got himself some playing time! He has power to spare. Last year, he hit a ball out of The Great American Ball Park going about 500 feet. He’s also seen very few pitches he doesn’t like. If Chipper stays on his usual 180-day DL, and Francisco hits… Well, this won’t be the last time I talk about him. He could hit 25+ homers.
Ted Lilly – Will start the year on the DL. He could return to the Dodgers as soon as April 15th. We’ll see if by then the Dodgers are meeting at half court and kissing the opposing players on the cheek prior to games.
Allen Craig – To the DL. I wonder if he ever gets confused on government documents when he has to put his last name first.
Chris Carpenter – To the DL. You can backdate this three weeks. No word on its expiration date. I’m guessing we’ll see him sometime in June for a start or two then the issue will resurface.
Troy Tulowitzki – X-rays came back clean after he was beaned on the elbow by his ex-teammate Ubaldo Jimenez, which Tulo claimed was intentional. Sounds like they’re having a hard time putting behind them their *pinkie to mouth* Rockie relationship.
Wilin Rosario – 81, 97 and 91 aren’t the three highest IQs of Jersey Shore castmates. It’s the number of games Ramon Hernadez has played the last three years. Wilin hit 21 homers last year in Double-A and now he’s backing up Ramon. In 2 catcher leagues, I’d go ahead and add him in the landmark case of sooner vs later.
Corey Hart – Should avoid the DL to start the year. Never surrender, Corey Hart!
R.A. Dickey – After he was spiked on Saturday, Dickey needed two stitches, but Dickey was seen telling girls he needed 8 stitches.
Tim Stauffer – Has been nursing a mild triceps injury. (Or is that tricep? Is it just a onecep?) Could bump him back a week or so before his first start.
Michael Morse – To the DL. Dot, dot, damn.
Mike Trout – Was optioned to the minors. Unless the Halos reacquire Kotchman and he gives the entire team mono, we’re not gonna see much of Trout until much later in the season.
Scott Baker – To the DL. Baker said, “I’d love to start the home opener; it’s just not wise.” Then Pringles dropped him from their endorsement contract.
Josh Hamilton – Has groin tightness and could sit out the rest of spring training so he can go when the season starts, then have this flare up again five or six more times during the season. Sorry to use “flare up” and “groin” in the same sentence.
Jed Lowrie – Looks like he could start the year on the DL. If Glass Chipper and Chase Utley had a baby, it would be Jed Lowrie.
Wade LeBlanc – Marlins optioned him to Triple-A. He’s hoping to resurface playing a funnier version of himself.
Kyle Weiland – Earned a spot in the Astros rotation. And what did you do this weekend, Eddie Vedder’s brother?! Huh?! Our prospect writer, Scott, wrote, “Weiland profiles as a back-of-the-rotation starter. He had his chance at the big league level last year, where in five appearances he posted an ugly 6.55 FIP. He throws a low 90′s fastball along with a cutter, a curve and a changeup. I wouldn’t mind seeing him throw one of those fastballs at Grey’s head.” Hey, I didn’t remember reading that!
Livan Hernandez – He was released by the Astros, then two hours later showed up at the Braves training complex, and signed on to be a long man/spot starter. The Astros only train about 20 minutes from the Braves, but it took 2 hours? Hmm, sounds like Livan drives about as fast as he throws.

So grab aceves over melancon?
Except that I had kept Pineda with my 22nd round pick. I think I still came out on top.
Maybe the Braves included free Masters tickets as part of the deal for Livan. He is a scratch golfer, after all.
Sorry, Grey. I know you hate golf but it is one of the great sporting events.
And is the Boston closer situation actually one to stay away from?
And Part II, The Return of And, do you pick up Chen (Chen!) for his Opening Day start in H2H?
@Steve, Why stay away? SAGNOF! Blech Chen…
@Grey, Always, but you wouldn’t drop Peavy, Cahill, Broxton or Henry R to pick up Aceves would you?
@Steve, I’d hold in most leagues for right now….
RA Dickey can suck my Dickey.
@Tim, You like the beard, do you?
With Francisco out of Cincinatti Is Todd Frazier a worthy pickup in a 20 team league?
@Giant JJ, Not right now…
Who would you pick out R.Tejada, D.Barney or J.Francisco in a deep league as a flier????….
@Curt, I would take Tejada or Barney over Francisco who clearly doesn’t have a full-season job. Tejada may have more upside than Barney.
@Curt, Francisco
Hi Grey —
Am I correct in assuming that it’s not worth dropping Henry Rodriguez, Jim Johnson, Frank Francisco, or Marmol for Aceves?
This is in my 16-team roto league where saves are usually very competative, and somehow I ended up with four closer-ish players, Aceves is still on waivers.
@Enrique, Yeah drop a closer for a possible two week fill-in closer where you’re not even sure who that fill-in really is.
@The mind, Frank Frank just looks so bad. I expect to hear he’s lost his job every day. But I get your point …
In a shallow, 10 team h2h, league with most of the talent snapped up in the draft and shortly after, which guys left would you suggest in shoring up some questionable spots on my roster? Aside from looking getting jobbed trying to work a trade before the season starts, that is…
I need more support at 3B than Freese, so after looking at my options on the FA wire, who, if anyone would you suggest I add?
- 2B/3B Ryan Roberts
- 1B/3B Edwin Encarnacion
Or, since I have Trumbo and he might only see “40 games”, should I just drop him for Gaby Sanchez, Lorenzo Cain, Cozart for some added offense?
I also have Vance Worley and am wondering it if is worth picking up Brandon McCarthy, Neftali Feliz (who’s likely to the bullpen), Colby Lewis, or Dirty Sanchez for another SP, or Chris Sale, Broxton, Brad Lidge or Addison Reed for a RP in his place?
@Viagra Falls,
don’t think feliz is going to see bullpen action , this year .
unless it’s in the play-offs .
@Viagra Falls, Roberts… Cain… Broxton if you need saves…
Hi again Grey, who is a better choice for a DL stash between Brian Roberts and Glass Chipper? I know you aren’t crazy about either of them, but it seems like a waste to have the DL slot empty.
This is in a 14-team league where, barring a disaster, I don’t need help at either position. So it’d be more to have a decent backup or as trade bait once they’re healthy.
@Enrique, Neither
@ Grey :
funny line … that dickey blurb .
from the out-start , melancon seemed the natural hand-cuff to bailey ,
but valentine is coming off a bit shaky .
hamilton reminds me of kg jr. , in that he gets hurt a lot by going
all-out , especially on the base-paths and in the field .
makes me wonder if it’s all part of the rangers’ master-plan NOT to
re-sign him , by insisting that he play center-field during these all
important spring training games .
obviously , washington does not have the brain-power or the authority
to do this on his own .
this has to be coming from higher up . (pun not intended) .
@chata, Thanks!
rut-roh .
now the voice ads are coming through that jwplayer .
lysol , finnish detergent …
when will it end ?
that shizz is on continuous loop .
maybe it’s time for us all to make some early-season donations .
i realize that times are tough (for all of us) , but those ads
are insidious .
@chata, ya they were funny playing in my classroom…..
@chata, I need to know where it is on the page to remove it…
Francisco or Moustakas
Aceves or Lidge
@Mr. Rickey, Moose….Lidge…
Grey, Juan Francisco or Mini-Mini Donkey?

@ritzer,
toronto / over is a lock .
had they signed yu darvish , they might have won the east .
definitely by 2013 .
@ritzer,
did you get these numbers from Jimmy The (still dead) Greek ??
@ritzer, I’d take the over on Toronto, KC, Washington and Pittsburgh. I’d take the under on the Yankees, Phillies and Cubs.
@ritzer, I’ll take the over on Baltimore since it’s apparently set at zero….
@A Hill O’ Beans, I just went back to the site…the bookmakers actually left out Baltimore completly. Its from paddypower.com
@ritzer, I think that tells you everything you need to know about how good Baltimore will be this year
Should I grab Altuve as a backup to Espinosa and drop Niese or Danks? or should I go with Rayburn? or hold….
@nightpandas, Altuve…Danks…
Agh! Grey you got to kill the ads with sound! If I’m fired I can’t obtain margarita money!
@Jangles, You need to tell me where they are located so I can remove them…
Deep league question: Grey or anyone … do you have a strong preference between Ruben Tejada, Eduardo Nunez, and Daniel Descalso as an infield backup? I need a guy to plug into SS or 2B when he faces a favorable matchup or when my starter is hurt of off or facing a serious ace.
@Enrique,
nunez is projected to get 400+ AB’s , by giradi …. and others .
@Grey — Do you agree that Nunez is the best bat among the three? Is he a more solid utility guy than Aviles? Thanks!
Yo Grey, traded my Wright, Reddick, JDLR, and David Hernandez for Konerko, Aramis, Bay, and Danks. Good or bad?
@Colour, Sounds good.
Another good Razzball article! Gotta get my daily dose of fantasy info from this site. Btw, glad that I didn’t draft Pineda this year. Had him during the 1st half last year, then traded him, Crawford and Dunn for Votto in the 2nd half. Pitching for the NYY this year didn’t make him more appealing to me draft-wise either. I think the hitters in the AL East will prove to be a BIG challenge for him. Seattle should’ve kept him in my opinion. Still, for his sake I hope he isn’t a total bust this year.
@LadyScorpio, Thanks!
So I recently made a couple of big trades and I was wondering if you could give me a quick evaluation of my team to see if I need to lean more on power/speed for hitting, etc.

What do you think? Btw, that mustache of yours has inspired my friend to grow a REALLY long goatee with nothing but the goatee
@Eric, Looks good. The back of your rotation looks a bit weak and I would want another saves guy so hopefully Rodriguez gets some but I like your hitting.
@Tom, Thanks haha I’m also debating on trading all my starters for upgrades in Util + Closers/Relievers and just try to solidly win ERA, Whip, and Saves every week so we’ll see how my rotation looks after I decide what I want to do. Probably wait it out a bit since the season hasn’t even started yet haha
1st , there was marcus thames (pronounced tims) .
now , there is eric thames (prounounced as it reads , like the river) .
c) yep , this time there is a “c” .
i’m not going to draft a guy named “all” thames , because ,
undoubtedly that will be pronounced ‘thumbs’ .
@chata, Ha!
Glad I passed on most of the risky guys…or at least didnt overpay. Had my draft on Saturday. 12 team auction H2H 6×6 (hr, r, rbi, avg, sb, tb+bb+hbp and w-l, k, era, whip, h+s, Ip) 10 start max and have to have 5 starters and three relievers. Wondering what you think.

We moved from $300 cap to $260 this year. We keep 5 guys a year up to three years i kept Upton, Stanton, Jennings, Napoli, and Kimbrel). I think most teams didn’t plan very well because I made sure to not go crazy early (Pujols $51, HRam $40, Cano $44, etc) so by round 20 I was able to get pretty much anyone I wanted. I need a catcher and another reliever. Probably will drop Pena and Rios but I feel pretty good. One team went crazy on SP with 3 guys in the top 10 but his offense paid. Only spot I’m not really happy is at first. Might move Wright to upgrade but I like Lind. I think he will bounce back in average enough to make him a starter in a 12 team h2h league.
@Tom, Forgot. My Starting Ss is Alexei Ramirez. Paid $7 for him.
@Tom, I think you have a solid team, looks well balanced… Bit too many bench bats, but not a terrible thing… Just lose them…
@Grey, thanks Grey. I like having a couple of power/speed guys for the weekend if I need to move guys in and out if need be but I agree. Im going to drop 1 or 2 to pick up some relievers.
Would you go Rodriguez over Romo over Brothers? All 3 are available. Thanks!
Can I get a source on the Aceves/Bailey situation? I heard it was Melancon who was going to close
@Jangles, Lets face it neither are good enough. Though for the time being I expect it’ll be Melon-con.
@Jangles, http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/playerbreakingnews.asp?sport=MLB&id=5564&line=353367&spln=1
Yet another closing shituation I’ve missed the boat on (Bo Sox). You’d think living in England id find out the news first as we’re 5 hours ahead!!
10 team mixed standard yahoo league. My current lineup looks like this:
Arencebia
Hosmer
Kinsler
Tulowitzki
A. Ramirez
Stanton
Bruce
Pence
C. Young or A. Lind for Util spot.
Starters are Haren, Cain, Beachy, and Scherzer
A trade was proposed to me. I give up Bruce for Strasburg and B. Gardener. What do you think?
@Jim, Your rotation depth is wafer thin…I’d do it.
@Jim, Hold
@Grey, I’m sorry, does that mean you would keep my team as is, or would you do the trade? My concern is I am short on SB’s and my starters are weak. What if I countered with Bruce for Price and Gardener?
@Jim, You don’t need to trade for steals in a 10 team league.
@Grey, Ok thanks. Last one. It’s a roto league with 1350 innings cap. Since I need another starter does the deal make anymore sense? I’m concerned about K’s and adding another good pitcher + the SB’s from Gardener I thought made some sense. You think I can get good enough value from free agents to be competitive in pitching?
Phil Hughes or Cahill? Also Belt or Morneau? I know “Morneau can’t stay healthy”, but it’s just so tempting to take a flier on him after his great spring and uncertainty about Belt.
@MrHappyTime, Cahill…Belt…
Pick 2- Pestano, Addison Reed, Lidge
I’m in need of saves, as Matt Thornton is my only closer.
@BobbyVCard, Lidge, Reed…
I was offered Starlin Castro for Trumbo. My current first basemen is Morse with Trumbo on the bench. My current SS is Dee Gordon with Yunel Escobar in reserve. Morse is opening the season on the DL. If I trade Trumbo I would have to pick up a 1B until Morse comes back. The best waiver option at 1B is James Looney.
Should make this move?
@Coach B, Yes
Hurray for DL spots finally being activated!
@Eddy, Where?
@Mzyptlk, ESPN and Yahoo!
@Eddy, None for Mike Morse, Drew Storen or Tim Hudson, Booooo
@MattTruss223, Or Felatio. Been waiting on him and Storen for nearly a week now.
@Eddy, And yet I can’t use a DL spot on Storen or Utley cause they’re still listed as day-to-day. Argh!
@Eddy,
it’s taking them forever to put ryan howard on the DL .
everyone in philadelphia knows the situation .
they’re not going to lose any more ticket sales .
hurry up , already !
Well we finally drafted yesterday Grey, quick thoughts on my draft in a 3 year keeper h2h league, much appreciated!

@Grey, sorry – 12 man league
@Amish Gangsta, You’re light on power and heavy on speed and pitching…
Proposed trade:
Giving: JP Arencibia and Edison Volquez
Receiving: Brian McCann
Thoughts.
@ChillmanCometh, Looks good
Grey, I need a backup MI, preferably with dual SS/2B eligibility. I’m in a deep roster 12 teamer. Got any under the radar names of guys that are simply going to actually play, so I can plug ‘em in on my starters’ days off?
All the usual suspects are gone, Aviles, Lowrie, Murphy, hell even Willie Bloomquist is rostered.
@Gavin, Nevermind. I was tossing around Sean Rodriguez and Eduardo Sanchez, and I went with Sanchez.
That was a really classless thing to do by Ubaldo, but it’s opening week in baseball…doesn’t get much better than this.
I had my other $ league draft, was wondering what you thought of my roster. It’s a 10 team H2H 9×9…with TB, XBH, H, K’s for hitters added for offense, and L, CG, HD, and Blown Save added for pitching. Bit crazy, but fun.

@Son of a Beachy,
Holds* …Not sure how I’d keep track of how many games I’d watch in High definition…
@Son of a Beachy, Thanks! Team looks very solid, bit light on hitter Ks, meaning you have a bunch of them…
12 team 5×5 roto:
Weaver, Lee, Beachy, Anibal, Wandy, Chacin, Cahill
Motte, Betancourt, Jansen, Crain, HRod, Lidge
Who should I drop (if anybody) so I can pick up Aceves?
@Ed Nugent, Crain
just curious if anyone has any advice for this situation….
I know that public leagues are hit or miss,but I usually join one or two because i like to be able to do a couple of early drafts,and I like to be in a a few leagues w/ different people than those in my regular leagues.
anyway,the commissioner of one league likes to talk s**t relentlessly(which I am mostly indifferent to)….but during the draft I went back at him and he apparently got his feelings hurt and promised that I would “regret it”.
apparently he really holds grudges and so now he is vetoing my perfectly reasonable trades w/no explanation and refuses to replace me w/ another manager.
its a yahoo h2h league….any ideas other than simply leaving the team inactive?
@Oilcan Giuseppe, I had that problem last year. Guy kept saying I was gay. I reported him and he was banned. If bad apples threaten or slur you they’re done, just make sure you don’t reply in kind or you’ll get ousted as well.
@Oilcan Giuseppe, Win your league with your add/drops prowess, courtesy of Grey’s crystal ball. Public leagues are like playing public room poker on FullTilt – sit tight, you’ll win
ESPN is projecting Geo Soto for 410 AB this season, and Ianetta at 344. They seem to me like interchangeable parts except for this huge gap in projected playing time. Is that all Ianetta’s manager? And if so, how trustworthy is it?
@Eddie, Sounds like guesses in the dark…
Anything I should look to improve on this roster going into the season in my dyno league Grey? I am punting 3B til HanRam gets eligibility or until the 15th, as I used all my acquisitions on pitching reinforcements. And no one would trade me for any of my 2B’s, so I plan on sticking them in my 2 UTIL spots for a while.
C – Posey, Ramos
1B – Fielder
2B – R Weeks, A Hill, D Espinosa
SS – HanRam, Dee Gordon
3B – none (damn you Chisenhall)
OF – Stanton, Crawford, Boesch, Thames, Cain, Soriano
SP – Greinke, MadBum, D Hudson, Morrow, Pineda (DL), Vogelsong (DL), also carrying Gerrit Cole as we expand to 14 keepers in 2013, thoughts on that? Guys like Profar, Machado, etc are all rostered.
RP – Beard, Storen, Marshall, J Johnson, D Robertson, H Rodriguez
Thanks as always for your help man!
@TualatinTwoStep, Not sure how many teams…
@Grey, 12 teams, starting lineup is C 1B 2B SS 3B OF OF OF UTIL UTIL SP SP RP RP P P P
And it looks like I can actually fill my 3B slot, you like Ian Stewart over Eduardo Nunez, who has 3B eligibility on ESPN?
@TualatinTwoStep, Yes, Stewart… Team looks heavy on injury risk and low on average… Your pitching is slightly better than your hitting…
Who’s got two thumbs and is going to the Dr.? Andrew Bailey and Josh Beckett.
The Boston Globe reports that Aceves has been told he needs to be ready to start Saturday in case Beckett can’t do it. This would appear to tip potential saves to Melancon.
Yesterday afternoon heard about Bailey’s injury and swooped in and grabbed Melancon of waivers as he seemed the logical choice for vulture saves if Bailey hits the DL.
This morning saw that Aceves was now in line to get the saves if Bailey goes on DL and wanted to make the change of Melancon for Aceves but someone already beat me to picking him up off waivers.
Skip ahead a couple hours later and now reports are that Beckett might miss his first start so Aceves has been told to be prepared to take his place in the rotation till he’s back.
Can the season just start already (don’t count the Japan-AAAA games as any sort of an official start) so I don’t have to worry about crappy speculative two week closers and finally focus on some real baseball?
Also, what is with all the thumb injuries and Red Sox pitchers?
Some sort of Elephant Walk hazinig incident gone wrong?
As a Yankees fan I love to insinuate that the Red Sox players have their thumbs up their ass but they’re making it a little to easy now.
@Smell The Glove, I heard the thumb injuries may have something to do with excessive opening of beer cans.
@peter, Thanks for the heads up!
@peter, Does Alfredo Aceves have 6 fingers, a la Antonio Alfonseca?
I am in a 20 team h2h dynasty league. I was offered Cano Gaby Sanchez and Alex rios for my fielder bourjos sano. I don’t mind losing fielder and bourjos, but giving Sano I am apprehensive. Does this trade make sense for me? What to do?

I finally had my draft over the weekend, and wound up with the last pick. The league is 11-team 7×7 (H and OPS added for hitters, K/BB and QS added for starters), Yahoo style but with 1 SP, 1 RP, and 6 P positions, so it’s easier to load up with elite RPs (which is what I tried to do). Here’s the team I ended up with (round in parentheses):
C: Wilson Ramos (17)
1B: Prince Fielder (1)
2B: Brandon Phillips (5)
SS: Alexei Ramirez (9)
3B: Pablo Sandoval (3)
OF: Jacoby Ellsbury (2)
OF: Jay Bruce (6)
OF: Desmond Jennings (7)
Util: Jason Heyward (11)
Util: Billy Butler (13)
Bench: Peter Bourjos (19), Jose Altuve (22)
SP: Zack Greinke (4), Mat Latos (8), Brandon Beachy (10), Max Scherzer (15), Colby Lewis (20), Jonathon Niese (23), Vance Worley (25)
RP: J.J. Putz (12), Rafael Betancourt (14), Sean Marshall (16), Kenley Jansen (18), Jim Johnson (21), Brad Lidge (24)
The league has a 1450-inning cap, so between Putz, Betancourt, Marshall, and Jansen, I think I’ve got a good chance to lead the league in ERA, WHIP, K/BB, and potentially Ks. I run the risk of punting Ws and especially QSs with this strategy, however. I employed the “sexy name” strategy when I grabbed Heyward in the 11th over less exciting names (though I still managed to grab boring Butler in the 13th). I think my most questionable move was grabbing Ellsbury with the 12th pick instead of Justin Upton or Carlos Gonzalez, but I knew that other speedy guys would be overvalued, and I think I made up for the power gap by grabbing Bruce in the 6th.
Thoughts, Grey or anybody?
@dingbat, Your team looks stacked, pitching and hitting… If anything maybe a tad high on steals… Bourjos is probably unnecessary…
Hey Grey,
Could Hamilton’s groin aggravation transform into a season ending injury? Can it be fixed? Will it go away?
I’m worried his power will be sapped by it. I drafted him in hopes of a repeat of 2010, even if it is only 130 games. Doable?
@Goose, 130 games sounds about right…
@Grey, One of my annual Point Shares traditions is to take whatever playing time estimates for Hamilton and take them down 15 games.
12team, H2H points, start 4OF, keeper. I give Teixeira/Boesch for Adrian Gonzales/BJ Upton?
My team:
C C Santana
1B M Teixeira
2B B Zobrist
3B A Beltre
SS S Castro
OF J Ellsbury, A Gordon, C Young, J Werth, B Boesch
U M Moustakas
BE B Harper, M Trout,
@Jay, I think I’d probably protest that trade if it happened. First and fifth round picks for third and last round picks?
@Bizarro, should have mentioned it’s -1pt per K…Gonzo/Teix and Upton/Boesch project out to about the same total pts.
@Jay, And Upton is on the DL…
Hate my offense — auction and the prices were jacked for the first ton of guys, I was always late to the party (though I had money for closers and starters late). Need help!
C Mesoraco
1B Hosmer
2B Kipnis
3B Beltre
SS Cozart
OF Cargo
OF Heyward
OF Morrison
OF Melky
OF Rios
UTIL Wells
DL Crawford
SP Shields
SP Bumgarner
SP Zimmerman
SP Marcum
SP Anibal
CL Motte
CL Storen
CL Balfour
CL Capps
B Melancon
B Venters
B Scott Baker
p.s. something I’ve noticed with auctions — it’s problematic to save money because the last of a tier of players is often more expensive than the first. i.e. Adrian Gonzalez went for more than Miguel Cabrera because Gonzo was the last of the top 1B put up for bid and there wasn’t the luxury of waiting for the next one. This happened the entire draft.
@Bizarro, p.s. 12 team standard 5×5 no keepers
@Bizarro, Your team’s hitting looks low on power and a bit high on risk… Don’t love Shields either…
@Grey, I hate this offense. My power if not my risk are helped by the fact that I forgot Arod at the corner spot (and Espinosa at the MI spot). Nearly every spot is filled with risk — Hosmer, Heyward, Crawford, Morrison, and my entire middle infield. Seriously, what a mess. The auction was a train wreck.
@Grey, also, I know from this site that you disagree, but Shields turned a corner last year. Throwing mid 90s in the 9th inning, been a workhorse for a long time, I think he’s made that mid career pitcher transition that Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, etc. made. Even if his BABIP was lucky last year.
Whatsup with all the thumb injuries in Beantown? Bobby V’s got all the pitchers rolling wraps? Guess who’s always hated Bobby V and now hates wraps? *This guy…
@Wake Up, obviously Call of Duty thumb
@Grey, In an OBP league do you like J.D. Martinez or Thames as your bench guy? I’m leaning J.D.
In 12 team H2H 6×6 (OBP and QS added) I just put Craig on the DL. I’ve got Stauffer and he may miss a start, so I’m thinking of adding another starter. Who do you like out of these jabronies (sp)?
Capuano (scheduled to start 4/7 @ SD the rest of the guys, I’m not sure)
Bailey
Humber
Hochevar
@3FingersBrown, Thames… Capuano for @SD…
Hey Grey,
Just finished my big money draft, standard 5×5 11 team league, was wondering what jew thought. Thanks! 5 OF, CI, MI, 5 B, 3 Minors, 8 P.

P – Morrow
P – Santos
P – Hanrahan
P – Guerra
B – Beachy (promoted from minors)
B – McCarthy
B – Sale
B – McCarthy
DL – Pineda
thanks b.
@Alex, Team looks decent… Your keepers don’t hurt…. The end of your outfield is a bit of a mess…
@Grey, ya, pagan is filler till BJ returns. not a big boesch fan huh? i ruv him in the 2 hole
280-20-70-95-6 from a 140th overall pick is fine by me.
@Grey, in my 12 team H2H points keeper league, every decent SP’s value was super inflated in the auction and I stubbornly stuck to your rankings and pt. shares and gobbled up big bats left and right.
I need to make some trades for pitching, but in the meantime should I drop either Nolasco and/or D. Holland for Peavy/Vogelsong/Leake? I have lots of depth at SP so am mostly looking for upside. Thanks!
@SF Values, Nolasco
Reports that Frank Francisco’s knee is barking.
Team representative said they’re flying him to NY see a veterinarian.
@Eddy, Ha!
@Grey, @Grey, In regards to Frank Francisco’s injury, your most recent “Closer Look” you have the next in line being Jon Rauch and Ramon Ramirez. But in ESPN’s incredibly unhelpful blurb, they make reference to Bobby Parnell as the possible replacement. How is a guy who didn’t have a guaranteed roster spot suddenly the expected replacement? Do the Mets put that much faith in Spring Training stats? Or are they concerned that all of their Relief Pitchers are going to get hurt, so they figure they’ll skip all the fuss and just go straight to their 4th option?
I know I should wait to hear the results of Francisco’s MRI, but that won’t stop me from speculating who could be his replacement. Has your recommendation changed since Tuesday?
@Heraldo, Figured I’d add my .02 since I’m a fan of the man called Parnell. Who gets the 9th is anyone’s guess (but Parnell did some closing last year and has the most closery stuff as the baseball people say – meaning he throws really hard. Of course where the ball goes, nobody knows… In the Mets front office dreamworld, they’d probably like Parnell to step up and be the 9th inning man. Rauch has closed before, albeit not very well. Ramirez I think they’ll throw every day in the 7th and 8th until his arm comes off.
@Heraldo, I agree with 3 Fingers.
@Grey, Nevermind, Rotoinfo’s got the inside scoop. They’re saying Derek Holland will fill-in for Frank Francisco: http://www.rotoinfo.com/comments-latestfromTwitter-41312.html
Not only is the update from the future (Aug 28, 2012), but the error can’t even be explained by being a year off, because Francisco was on Toronto last year, and even 2 years off because Neftali Feliz was killing it that year with 40 saves.
This just goes to show you, you can’t trust the internet. Or any other Fantasy Baseball website except Razzball.
@Heraldo, Damn, Holland’s already taken in my league.
grey nice job again
@AL KOHOLIC, Thanks!
btway…really enjoying the book(I thought I was a member of BDP for a stretch)…
@Wake Up, Ha!
Grey-
Help me choose 3 of 5 RP in league that counts holds and saves:
Pestano
Romo
Holland
Broxton
Cordero
Thanks!
@McCulkin, Romo, Broxton, Pestano…
Francisco AVERGED a WHOPPING 439 feet per HR!
Of course that is 3 total topped by his 482 missile!
Heeee can doooo eet!
@Simply Fred, Ha!
Grey whats your thoughts on this trade. I get Ike davis, vernon well and brett Gardner i give up Dan Uggla and Chris Young.
I also will be able to move howie kendrick to my 2B spot
@Tom, Eh
How serious is the Hector Santiago buzz in Chicago’s bullpen? Roster spots are tight, but I could shed a Danny Duffy here and a Hector Noesi there.
@Paul Wilson, I’d hold for now.
Grey – I’m in a weird pool where you pick one player off of each team (can be anybody). There’s only 2 RP so picking the right 2 closers with the most saves is huge. There’s 80 people in the pool so if you lead saves by yourself, you get 80 points, however if there’s a glut of people behind with common closers they get the average position.
In a nutshell – which 2 closers do you think lead in saves?
Kimbrel
Rivera (then you can’t take Sabathia/ Cano)
Axford (then you can’t Braun)
others?
Also do you think Street or Motte could be a darkhorse candidate for 40+ saves?
Thanks!
@Todd, Kimbrel, Axford… Yes… Motte…
Grey – Need your advice on two questions……. 12 Team Roto (5 x 5) Weekly league
1) Drop Presley or Viciedo for Cody Ross……… Current OF’s Gardner, Heyward, Pagan, Tabata, Viciedo & Presley. Team heavier on speed than power…. avg could be suspect
2) Drop Clippard and/or Holland for one or two of these SPs: Hughes, Smardzija, Alvarez or Pomeranz Current pitchers: Beachy, Gio, Zimmerman, Stauffer, Sanchez, Marcum, Frank Frank, Marmol, Street, Holland & Clippard
Thanks!
@Euroalien, 1) Viciedo 2) Samardzija, Alvarez…
@Grey, Thanks – added Ross, Smardzija & Alvarez
CIN is closing in an extension that would make Votto a Red for a long time for a pretty penny.
@Eddy, Cool…
Replace DL’d Lilly with Samardzija or Nicasio?
@zzzzzz, Samardzija
12-team 5×5 (QS instead of Wins) roto league
Would you trade Daniel Hudson and Valverde for Cliff Lee? I have enough saves and need a #1 SP…the rest of my staff looks like this:
CJ Wilson
Daniel Hudson
Gio Gonzalez
Cahill
Chacin
Filthy Sanchez
@Project_badass, It’s fair…
@Project_badass, Personally I wouldn’t do that deal. It’s a fair deal but Hudson’s having a great spring.
Grey,
Hou’d you rather have at 3rd this year- Arod or Wright? Thanks in advance.
@Moneybrawl, Tough call… With my hands tied, Wright…
@Grey,
Thanks.
Hi Grey,
My team has Big Papi and Billy Butler on the bench.
Would you trade Butler or Big Papi first?
Would you trade either for Posey so I can dump Geovany Soto?
@Frank Kim, Sure, trade Papi…
@Grey, Thanks!
Hey Grey, Francisco has injured his knee! Would you drop Francisco and grab Marshall? Or would you still hold for now?
Thanks
I’d hold for right now…
Grey,
Which would you prefer as a 5th OF, Rios or Eric Thames?
Thanks.
Rios
(12-team – 23 man rosters) I currently have both Broxton and Holland (KC), is it worth hanging on to both of them to see exactly how it shakes out, or does it seem like Broxton has a firm enough nod that I should dump Holland for Lidge or Aceves who are both available on the wire.
Lose Holland for Lidge…
Guys,
Don’t believe I need to repost my line up for this question:
I have multiple 3B and closers. Storen is my #3 closer behind Axford and Paps. Also have 3 other closers. I could use an OF bat.
Someone has offered me Josh Hamilton for my Aramiz and Storen.
Thoughts?
I see no difference between J Ham and Aramiz in their projections, except for their positions. Am I giving up in your opinion? I think so
This is a 5×5 league 12 teamer FYI.
It’s fair… Don’t see the point in doing it…
@Grey, Good point! Thank you
Too much***
In a 12 team keeper league draft where Matt Moore went for $26, Darvish for $20, Beachy and Leubke for $16 each, I got Anibal for $6! League-mates seriously discount guys who have crashed and burned in the past. My staff is Hamels, Hanson, Anibal, Fister, D Holland, Garza, and H Alvarez with Matt Harrison and Scott Baker on the bench. Feel pretty good about it … won’t win the ratios, but should place top 4 or 5 out of 12. Thoughts?
I agree with you… Though Hanson, Fister and Baker are injury risks… Could work out, could be a disaster…
Starting to hate closers and im sure you must too Grey. Quick question, Lidge or Parnell/Rauch.
Lidge
Thx. My offense should help me contend. Kept Tulo, Votto and Grandy and added Lawrie and Braun. Your fingerprints are all over my team. Avoided the Sagnofs and Donkeycorns. Took Reimold as 5th OF (aimed for pressley, got nipped, was gonna go yonder, but wanted better speed –Nolan is leading off). Just used a FA pick on Henry Rodriguez (dropped Rex Brothers), damn is he smoking hot right now, read the wash post write ups on his filfth. Took Adams and Lindstrom in taxi, had Putz and Thornton as keepers. Should be able to get a third closer out of that backup crew, no?
You should, yeah…
Was just scrolling down to post something incredibly witty…which I already forgot…but I did see in my scrolling that you said you agree with 3 fingers…I say only if 4 won’t fit…
Ha!
Grey, should I drop T. Hudson to speculate on Rauch? Already have 5 starters, although one is Neftali.
Hold for now….
Sounds like Aceves could be the suprise choice then. Well at least I’ll have hit in 1 outve 324 closer candidates this spring… lol.
@TheNewGuy, He supposedly is…
In a deep NL only league, Rick Hague or Adam LaRoche at CI? In the same league, Pierre or Bernandina as a 5OF?
LaRoche… Bernadina…
@Grey, Thanks.
@Grey:
-What is the net effect of Votto locking down such a big deal before the season starts usually for a player of his caliber? Should B.Phillips be targeted since he’s not going to get the big deal and is going to shop around?
-Where can I download your podcast as I’m not an applephile (?)
-I’ve been trying to integrate gooftard into my everyday vocabulary but it’s not sticking according to ownership% : (
@Rick Dempsey, Don’t think Votto’s deal means anything for us… Download it in the podcast post… You gotta try harder…
I am looking at either adding another hitter or another RP with potential vulture saves.
I am going to drop Chris Sale, who should I pick up?
My current RP’s – Clippard, Broxton, Romo, Pestano, Henry Rodriguez
My current OF, SS, and 1B – Bruce, CarGo, Werth, Heyward, Bourjos, Rasmus, Reyes, Bonifacio, and Fielder ( I also have Youk at 3B)
Here are the people I’m looking at picking up
RP – Melancon, Addison Reed, or Chapman
Hitters – Goldschmidt, Cozart, Sean Rodriguez, Tabata or Cain
I like all these options, I just don’t know which way to go. I currently have Bonifacio and Uggla as my UTIL players and Rasmus and Bourjos are on my bench (we have 4 OF spots and NO CI or MI spots)
Don’t drop Sale. Can lose Pestano if you like… Goldschmidt…
I need 4 starters wich ones would you pick
Buchholz, Clay
Hellickson, Jeremy
Holland, Derek
Luebke, Cory
Floyd, Gavin
Rodriguez, Wandy
Sanchez, Jonathan
@Mike, Luebke, Holland, Wandy, Sanchez…
Hey Grey,
I’ve got a trade offer in my league (ESPN 12 team 5×5) that I’m stumped by. I had a weird auction, ended up with no closers, crappy staff and a lot of offense. Another player offered me Bumgarner, Motte, and Storen for either Upton or HanRam, and I don’t know if it’s the smart move. Here’s my roster
C Yadier
1B Morse
2B A. Hill
SS HanRam
3B Sandoval
MI S. Castro
CI Aramis Ramirez
OF J. Upton
OF Pence
OF Moreland
OF B. Gardner
OF Tabata
U J. Montero
B Howard
B E. Thames
SP Latos
SP Matt Moore
SP Hudson
SP N. Feliz
SP J. Sanchez
SP Chacin
RP Fuentes
RP Salas
RP Resop
RP Cishek
Motte and Storen would put me middle of the pack in Saves, I’m stacked at 3B, and could find some middle infidel to cover for Ramirez, backing up Castro.
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance.
Quinn
Hold…
@Grey, Late draft and I can’t decide on my two keepers…
Pick 2: D.Jennings, Alex Gordon, Napoli and/or Ian Kennedy?
Jennings and Kennedy…
@Grey,
You think this team can compete? How would you tweak it?
@Quinn, It can compete, you need power and have speed to spare…
@Grey,
OK. Guess I’m over-thinking the staff. Thanks Grey.
@Grey,
Also looking at a trade of Aramis for Gallardo.
Word is Bailey may need thumb surgery.
Yup… So not surprising…
@Grey
With Bailey possibly needing surgery, is Aceves a must-own now? Or do you still think he’s a wait-and-see?
Must own…
Bald Jim gets a 5-game suspension and an undisclosed fine.
@Steve, Yup
@Grey, 14-teams, who do you like better at Util – Robot or Juan Francisco?
Francisco
@Grey, Cool – thanks. You know why they call him Juan, right?
It’s because he’s never taken a walk – not a single Juan.
That may or may not be true (emoticon)
Though he didn’t walk once in Spring Training. More interesting than Robot, though.
Nice!
Awesome article as always. Just spent a week in Mexico with no internet & Spanish-only TV. Been dying for some fantasy talk & especially Razzball!!
Got some back-end rotation & RP questions:
My current SP’s:
MadBum
Price
Gio
Zimmerman
Minor
Bard
Nolasco
Would you drop any of the above for:
Dirty Sanchez
Capuano
Nicasio
Nieman
Vargas
Also, how would you rank these RP’s (mainly for saves, but K’s work too):
Greg Holland
Henry Rodriguez
Lidge
Melancon
Aceves
Thanks! I’d lose Nolasco for Nicasio… Lidge, Aceves, H-Rod, Melancon…
@Grey, What about Holland? And have you heard anything on the closer situations in: KC, WAS, & BOS? I’m trying to make the correct speculative adds, but these damn managers don’t seem to care about my fantasy team whatsoever…
@Scott, Broxton is supposed to get the first chances…
Hey Grey
Question about add/drop before the season starts. 14team 6×6 OBP league.
My offense is pretty well set:
C: Arencibia
1B: Miggy
2B: Kendrick
3B: Sandoval
SS: Dee Gordon
MI: J. Weeks
CI: Lind
OF (4): Braun, Bruce, Hamilton, LoMo
UTIL: Brantley
Bench: I. Stewart
There are these guys sitting out there as FA right now: V. Wells, LaHair, Presley, Bourgeois.
Would you drop Stewart for any of them?
My pitching is more suspect (but still upside-likeable):
SP: MadBum, J. Zimmerman, Morrow, Minor, D. Holland
RP (holds count, so all 8th/9th inning guys are all taken): Street, Myers, Perkins, G. Holland, Brothers, Resop, Qualls
DL: B. Anderson
And these guys are sitting out there as FA right now: Niese, Jurrjens, Worley, Bedard, Samardzjia.
…would you drop Stewart for any of them?
I’m just kinda wondering, generally, considering the season starts in two days anyway and I feel like my offense is pretty set — is it a better idea to align my team with what I think I need right now, i.e., try to catch early success with a pitcher, i.e., ditch Stewart? OR since, really, if Stewart (or Niese, or Worley, or Wells, or LaHair, or etc etc) does nothing for the first week of the year, then I’m going to drop them for whoever else is hot anyway — I might as well just stand pat and wait and see what happens week one?
Thanks, man, sorry for the long-windedness. Just been thinking about short-term strategy — value to my team now vs. value over the season — and curious what your thoughts are on how to balance that… ?
Just hold for now… You’re gonna drop someone after the first week of games anyway….
@Grey,
Right on.
I just bought you a daiquiri, Grey. Been meaning to for some time but now that I finally got myself a jobby job, it was high time for a sweet-n-fruity celebratory beverage. Enjoy!
I always appreciate what you guys do here — keep up the greyt work!
Thanks!
@Grey, keep 5: Broxton, Melancon, Lidge, Marshall, Jansen, Pestano
Lose Pestano
@Grey, thanks. Like any of these guys better? Henry Rodriguez, Mike Adams, David Carpenter, David Robertson… all free agents.
@Jon, For saves? H-Rod more than Jansen… Jansen’s more valuable in the big picture though…
Oh – and the future has arrived:
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/motoring/news/article.cfm?c_id=9&objectid=10796371
@Steve, YES!
I’ll take two!
It’s about time!
@Grey, I think we’re just waiting on the three-course meal in the form of a pill, aren’t we?
@Steve, And hover boards!
@Grey, I, errah, will be driving/flying that car to Martha’s Vineyard and Hyannis Port on the weekends. Wish me luck!
@Awesomus Maximus, Don’t take your mistress with you.
@Grey, hover boards are above all the most important invention that I haven’t seen yet.
They should have hover board telethons!
@Grey, I’m still pretty pissed at the kid on the playground back in ’88 who told me he had some inside info that they were almost done making them…
That was me. Sorry.
@Grey, Asshole…
@Wilsonian, All I saw in my email was you calling me that and I was like, “Whoa, what happened?” Forgot about this thread… Ha…
@Grey, that’s what you get for lying about hover boards 24 years ago…
@Grey, http://gizmodo.com/5549271/a-real-working-hoverboard-exists
@royce!, Why can’t Microsoft put a billion dollars towards this happening on a mass scale?
@Grey, I just hope I get to the future before Judy Jetson is no longer a Cougar…………………
@BigFatHippo, Ha
@BigFatHippo, Eep opp ork ah ah is the sound her artificial hip makes…
@Grey, Haha………….aakk aakk a dakk, dakk dakk a aakk…………Wait, that’s the Flinstones, carry on…………….
Hehe
Drafted Hellickson with my last pick in my 8 Team H2H league hoping that maybe last year wasn’t a complete fluke, but after failed attempts to trade him preseason, I’m kind of thinking he could be useless. Would you drop him now for Fister, Wandy, Volquez, Liriano, Nose Job, or Filthy? I’m debating on dropping him now or at least seeing how his first start is, albeit it’s against the Yankees.
W, L, SV, Ks, Ks/9, ERA, WHIP
I’d hold him for right now…
@Grey, that’s kind of what I figured. You never know…he could shock us all.
Writing of Chase “Bandage” Utley, when’s that bastard hitting the DL and giving me an open slot? Is there a date teams need to do this by? Maybe by Opening Day: Episode II – The Reckoning…
This spring, middle America is more confused than usual.
“I reckon this ain’t Openin’ Day, since they already played some games last week, Cletus.” “I reckon my grandpappy didn’t die in dubya dubya two just so’s we could hand our Openin’ Day over to Hero Heeto, Jebadiah.” “I reckon you’re right, Cletus… I reckon those games don’t really count, and today’s Openin’ Day after all! Hand me one o’them good ol’ American Miller Lites, will ya’?” Shoot… Miller was purchased by South African Breweries PLC ten years ago, so I reckon that means it ain’t an American beer!”
IN MISSISSIPPI, NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU RECKON
Ha! That’s awesome(us)!
@Awesomus Maximus,
I reckon Max ain’t never been to M I crooked letter crooked letter I crooked letter crooked letter I humpback humpback I………………*
* You have to have once been from The Bootheel to cypher that letterin!
@BigFatHippo, Reckonin’ that may just get you wrecked. Let’s just say P.F. Chang’s ain’t the only place I’ve been caught noodling.
@Awesomus Maximus, Haha, I reckon, yup………….
@BigFatHippo, Watch out for snappin turtles……….
@BigFatHippo, Them’s what makes it exciting!
One more thing about the two games that took place in Japan that were apparently real major league games (someone told me that, I think they’re still full of shizz):
The A’s and Mariners are playing Spring Training games today!! How the hell do you go Spring Training –> Regular Season –> Spring Training –> Regular Season?? That makes absolutely no sense. Selig is such a moron. I only know this because apparently the Jesus took one off his noggin today and had to be removed.
Yeah, it’s totally bonkers…
@Wilsonian, And the Cardinals flew to Springfield, Mo today to play a AA game tonight then fly back to Florida tomorrow to face the Fish on opening night, where they’ve been for the last month!
What the?????????????
@BigFatHippo, Yeah…none of it makes much sense. And don’t get me started on the All-Star game determining home field advantage in the World Series…
@Wilsonian, Sure worked for us last year! I can’t complain (but sometimes I still do)…………..
@BigFatHippo, Haha. Damn Cardinals fans… I’m in southern Illinois surrounded by them! I just think it was way too reactionary. No one really cared that it was a tie. We all would’ve gotten over it. Selig = the FAA. They overreact to everything…one guy brings a bomb on a plane in his shoe…8 years later we’re all still removing our shoes before we get on a plane.
@Wilsonian, You wouldn’t happen to be the Mega Millions winner from Red Bud would you? If so………….don’t forget your buddies, just 6 figures would be enough……….
@BigFatHippo, Ha…unfortunately no. That is about 45 minutes from me, though.
@BigFatHippo, And the Cardinals did so to play the Cardinals! Time is folding in on itself!
According to Yahoo, as if we hadn’t figured it out yet, Marshall is the closer in Cincy.
@Wilsonian, Thanks for the heads up!
@Grey, No prob. Tried to find it elsewhere, but looks like Yahoo is the only one reporting it. And you know Yahoo is the gospel of all things fantasy news… emoticon…
@Wilsonian, http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120402&content_id=27849802¬ebook_id=27849856&vkey=notebook_cin&c_id=cin
The Fray should never ever get anywhere near the National Anthem……….cust kayin
@BigFatHippo, They shouldn’t get anywhere near mics.
I trade F. Liriano and and Tom Hanson for Ian Kennedy and Jhoulys Chacin… 10 team h2h points league. I feel like I’m making out like a bandit with the deal (minus getting the clap).
@4D3D3D4, It looks great for you…
@grey, why is B. Parnell starting the game and going THREE innings? Doesn’t sound as if he is in the closer mix…?
@Simply Fred, Cause it’s the Mets? He was probably due to throw and Francisco just had issues today…
What’s your take on the drop in King Felix’s velocity?
I’m not concerned right now…
I’m not a huge fan of college basketball (though I do remember seeing MJ make The Shot on TV all those years ago), but Twitter tells me that, with the exception of 1948, every time Kentucky have won the national championship, the Yankees have won the World Series.
When’s the championship?
@Grey, Was tonight. Kentucky won…
Melancon, Aceves, Reed, Romo, Henry Rodriguez, Clippard, Broxton, or Lidge
Which 5 would you rather have?
