Sorry, I ran out of “solar energy” puns and “Cirque du Soler” was already taken by Keith Law, so I went with Seinfeld. As I write this, I am stripped to the waist eating a block of cheese the size of a car battery. [Jay’s Note: That’s hot.] We need to mention Jorge Soler (+91%) one more time though. His 91% increase in ownership was by far the highest jump this week. It’s also the highest increase I’ve seen since I started writing this trash/treasure waiver wire column. Soler continued to make the game look easy on Monday. Batting fifth for the Cubs, the 22-year-old outfielder went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored. He has an extra-base hit in each of his first five games.

It’s not like we didn’t see this coming. Soler was a big sign for the Cubs but injuries hindered his development at times. Earlier this season was a good buy-low opportunity in dynasty leagues actually, as Soler did not even appear in some mid-season Top 50 prospect lists. In Triple-A, Soler had a similar August as fellow Cubs prospect Kris Bryant. For the month Bryant hit .274/.435/.579 with 8 homers and 19 RBIs in 117 plate appearances, while Soler hit .276/.364/.598 with 6 homers and 24 RBIs in 99 plate appearances. They are both 22 years old. It’s scary to think what this lineup could do if all the parts click. You shouldn’t need me or anybody else to tell you to go out and add him. Here are this week’s other big adds and drops in fantasy baseball…

Arismendy Alcantara – 30% owned (+20%)

Oh look, it’s another Cub. Alcantara shifted from the middle infield to centerfield for the Cubs and it does not seem to have slowed him down at the plate. He now has four homers in his last 15 games. From what I’ve read of the first-hand looks on him, he has incredibly strong wrists that allow him to drive the ball without necessarily having the look of a player who can hit for power. You won’t believe this, but like Soler and Bryant he’s also 22 years old. Alcantara can run as well, stealing 25+ bags in each of his last three seasons. Take advantage of the eligibility while he has it this season. With only 15 games started in the middle infield, he may lose that next year in leagues that require 20 games at a position. He’ll be valuable next year even as an outfielder, though. The power/speed combo is too good to pass up and I was surprised to see he was still owned in only 30% of leagues after a 20% jump. Don’t spend too much time debating whether you should drop your struggling middle infielder and just pick up Arismendy Alcantara. TREASURE.

Wilin Rosario – 39% owned (-16%)

This is less a direct statement on Rosario himself as it is about not hanging on to guys too long. I’m guilty of this too and usually pride myself on having a lot of patience in fantasy baseball. Players like Rosario had a lot going in their favor (great home park, power, solid year prior) and it makes it so tough to cut bait with them. Case in point – it’s pretty easy to find a replacement catcher in one-catcher leagues, and yet Rosario is owned in 10% more leagues than Alcantara mentioned above. That’s bat guano crazy. The Rockies’ backstop is still only 25 years old, so I’d try to give him a longer leash in deep dynasty leagues or 2-catcher affairs. Other than that, cut him loose and move on to whatever hot hand is out there at catcher for the week. Considering I owned him for a part of the season, I will leave with something nice to say about him…I think he’ll be a good value in next year’s drafts. But for now – TRASH.
