Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

When I saw what Steve Pearce had done over the past two weeks, questions arose. The main question being, “Who the hell is Steve Pearce?” He’s the most added player on ESPN (+43%) and now has ten homers and 30 runs batted in with just 189 plate appearances. He’s even thrown in four steals! He does everything! This feels very hot schmotatoish if you ask me, but who cares when there are about a half dozen corner infielders sitting on your wire right now. Might as well ride the hot hand and if it doesn’t continue we can fall into the waiting arms of Casey McGehee or C.J. Cron. Aside from strikeouts, Pearce’s splits are nearly identical against left and right-handed pitching, but his best stuff comes at home against left-handers where he’s rocking a 205 wRC+. I’m not sure the .365 BABIP will hold up and his 17% HR/FB% is almost twice his career average, but I’d wager we didn’t pay more than a waiver wire claim for him so let’s ride the wave. Here are the other big adds and drops for this week in 2014 fantasy baseball…

Kole Calhoun – 77% owned (+33%)

The only thing standing in the way of the now healthy outfielder is his own manager. The skipper thinks 5-for-10 with a homer and four runs scored is just dandy, but he needs to see more to put you in that lineup, Kole. A Razzball preseason favorite, Calhoun has been locked in recently and it shows in the sharp spike of his ownership. Aside from the occasional benching against lefties, there isn’t much to complain about in Calhoun’s fantasy value. He hits for power, has some speed, and won’t kill your average. He also finds himself nestled in a decent lineup for counting stats with the Angels. He’s not a player I’d sell the farm for but he’s a no-brainer add at the moment. The 26-year-old has posted a 166 wRC+ against right handers this season and Steamer is projecting him for another nine home runs. TREASURE.

Andrew Heaney – 9% owned (-25%)

Heaney was in this post just a few weeks ago as one of the hottest adds in the land. How quickly things change when you get nicked up for some runs and only have a minor league track record to go on. The majority of us play in mixed leagues of 12-teams or shallower, so the case for hanging on to Heaney isn’t strong. However, I do believe he’ll be back in the rotation after the All Star Break and should see better times ahead in the second half. A handful of bad starts isn’t enough to sour me on him considering he’s the same guy as two weeks ago when we all had our panties in a bunch. While Heaney got killed by the long ball (2.18 HR/9) a HR/FB rate of 21% should normalize. His current 5.6 K/9 should improve and a BB/9 under 2 is a positive sign for the young southpaw from this point forward. Don’t forget he still pitches against some weaker opponents in the NL East and calls Crayola Canyon his home park. Rookies are dangerous territory as it is, but given how quickly the crowd is bailing on Heaney there’s a chance he has landed back on your wire with his three worst starts already behind him.  TREASURE.

Any thoughts on why we have yet to see Heath Hembree up in SF? It seems like he would fit nicely into a late inning role for a team that needs bullpen help. Why let him toil away at AAA after giving him a looksy late last year? Is he still a closer of the future? Thanks for the read!

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

It’s a good question, but I think he’s now more of a 7th/8th inning guy as opposed to the closer of the future.

5×5+OPS league, someone just dropped Heyward and I have first waiver priority. Have Taveras still in NA so I’d need to drop two of him, Hosmer, and James Jones.

Worth dropping two for Heyward and if so, which two? Also have LaRoche and Teix at 1B and Trout, Bruce, Springer, and Rajai at OF. Thinking just keeping Heyward away from anyone else makes it worth it.

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

Yeah, I’d lose Taveras and Jones for him if it’s a redraft

      • Tyler says:
        (link)

@Mike: Thanks, that’s what I was thinking. Jones is basically another Rajai and Taveras’ upside is prob less than Hosmer or Heyward this year.

I learned more about Dano than I will ever want to know. I can’t even make eye contact with his write ups. I’ve been smoking the Calhoun stash for a while now and have been higher than Lawrence Taylor in a New York park.

I like to bounce stuff off the other writers so here it goes. What is your take on Alex Cobb? Does he turn it around? My gut says yes but my brain says no. He’s starting to fall into my old every other year on young arms formula and this is the not good year. And is it me or has Yoenis been blahish?

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

      haha, agreed on Dano!

I guess it’s a matter of what we were expecting from Cobb. Not sure it’s fair to want him to be a fantasy ace, but I’d be happy with him as my SP2.

He passes the sniff test with a good K rate, walk rate, and GB%. Plus his SwStr% is over 11% and he’s got a SIERA in the mid 3s. To me, all this adds up to a guy who should be more than solid the rest of the way, so go with your gut!

I love Cespedes…25ish dingers with good counting stats and a handful of steals I’ll take all day. I guess it’s like Cobb though…if he’s your OF1 it doesn’t really blow you away.

      • J-FOH says:

  15. I dropped Allen Craig for Polanco. Was that the right thing to do? I have Bautista, Adam Jones, and Bryce Harper as my other outfielders. My first base is covered by Goldy and VMart. I needed steals and I was frustrated with Craig sitting a lot.

    Thanks man!

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

I don’t usually recommend trading a big bat for an arm, but I could see doing that if it helps you win it all this year. If you’re going to move one of those bats, though, I’d want Tanaka in return over Teheran, and see if you can get him to throw in a small offensive piece in return.

  17. Beastman says:

Harper for Adrian Gonzo straight up in a H2H OBP league with limited transactions?

I agree with you, Mike. I am a big Calhoun fan and Heaney has tremendous upside – I own Calhoun and will pickup Heaney again on a good Eastern matchup.

    14 team 5×5 Roto
I’m looking for some W’s and I have 3 (who I think are good) 2Bs. I only need one.
    Kinsler
    Wong
    Carpenter
Similarly, I have two C and could part with one. I have
    Rosario
    Ramos
I’ve been playing the other C in my utility if both start. Who would you trade and who are several pitchers to target? Thanks.

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

I would look to trade Ramos and whichever of those 2B you think will bring back the biggest fish in your league. I’d aim high and look to snag a top 20 starter. I don’t trust theat Ramos can stay healthy and Rosario has Coors on his side.

        • Mike

Nice, yeah I assumed keeper since you listed the prices. I’d still lean the Brown side. I like Brown’s bat better than Young’s and I just think ten is a little high for Wheeler at this stage of the game.

          • Jiggy Nits says:

    Hi all:

This is my first post here! I’m in a league (salary cap keeper league) and was just offered Taijuan Walker and Jonathan Gray for Buxton. Both me and the other guy are out of it. I’m leaning towards yes because Walker is going to have a full season in the majors and Gray likely gets called up at least at some point next season. Though Buxton likely will too. A little help? Thanks!

    • Mike

@J Boy@Mike: Mike one more for you – Wacha for Cobb in the same keeper league- yay or nay and do you prefer Cobb or Latos if you has to choose one? Thanks for all the guidance!

        • Mike

          Mike says:
          (link)

no problem. I think I’d rather have Latos

  31. Bro Jackson says:
    (link)

    10 team 5×5 keep any 5.

I traded Kinsler and Braun for Cano. I would have never thought that Kinsler would have the most HRs currently.

I have Trout, Stanton, McCutchen, HanRam, E5, Rizzo, and Longo. I couldn’t keep 8. Was this a smart move ROS and for forever?

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

I think I’d rather have the Braun side, but it’s fair and your team is really stacked for now and later. Really nice keepers.

      • Bro Jackson says:
        (link)

@Mike: Thanks Mike. Like Beane, I needed to trade quality to get quality.

Can I have your opinion on which 5 guys you would keep for next year out of Trout, Stanton, Cutch, HanRam, Cano, E5, Longo, and Rizzo.

        • Mike

          Mike says:
          (link)

          for sure

Trout, Stanton, Cutch, Hanley, and Rizzo/E5. You could make a case for either 1B, I just prefer Rizzo

  32. Dave says:

Hey Mike, which five am i keeping next year?

7×7 with obp, slg, holds, QS.

    Elvis Andrus

    Thank you in advance

    • Mike

Upton, Bautista, Freeman, Cano, and Seager would be my picks

    • Dave says:
      (link)

@Dave: Crap forgot Yelich on that list. Thanks again

      • Mike

        Mike says:
        (link)

anytime…you could make a case for Bryant and Yelich in that last spot over Seager. If you have the luxury of time just wait to see who is going higher in most rankings…

        • Dave says:
          (link)

@Mike: Thanks. The reason I ask is that Kris Bryant is available on the wire and we have limited moves (9 left) but an N/A slot to hold a minor leaguer that doesnt count toward our roster spots. Problem is Im in top 2 so dont want to waste a pickup on bryant.

          • Mike

            Mike says:

I think he’s worth a pickup for that N/A spot

What are the chances the Cubs will keep Alcantara starting in the bigs even after the 2 game audition while Barney is on paternity leave? What trade value could Barney possibly accrue during the next few weeks before the trade deadline? Looking to upgrade my SP in a league that doesn’t do much trading. One of the few active owners is willing to deal Latos or Kluber for Donaldson (I also have Arenado). Am I giving up too much value? Would Arenado be a more appropriate value?

    Thanks!

I’d be more willing to give up Arenado, yes.

Mike, this is my team, 10 team 5×5= Posey, McCann, Gennett, Pablo, Alcides, Puig, Holliday, Adam Jones, Bruce Braun and Craig, pitching is: Gio, Wilson, Fister, CVain, Bumgartner, Ross, Melancon, Shiled, Arrieta, Tanaka and Wacha. Been losing, bats seem to be dead, plain old getting smoked right now, can’t figure out why. See any moves i should make, trade for another bat? Or stay put and wait until after the all star? Would like to trade for cargo, even though he’s on the d/l, who to give up for him? Anybody I should try and get in a trade to get back on the winning side?

preaching is a lot easier when you’re winning, lol.

I’d look to get out of Craig and maybe package him with another piece to improve a position. Are you carrying two catchers in a one catcher league or is Posey your first baseman?

Pitching is fine. I usually practice patience and your outfield is nice. Craig looks like a weak link though.
