I don’t know about you, but even I get hung up on the individual site rankings for my leagues’ player pages, even though they have little to do with the categories that we use. For example, in my CBS dynasty league, we use Runs Produced (RBI+R-HR), net Stolen Bases (SB-CS), Slugging, On-base Percentage, and Plate Appearances [Jay's Note: We use OBP, TB, W+QS, 2*Sv+H in a couple of my dynasty's], yet I am still at times impulsive to pick-up whomever sits at top of the sites’ rankings, which is based off standard 5×5 formats. Well, you’re welcome– This post is to help you distinguish the value differential for OBP and OPS leagues relative to the ESPN player rater rankings. It should give you targets to trade for or trade away.

Rankings Defined: There are 4 sets of rankings, followed by their expected statistics (expected AVG,OBP and OPS) incorporating xBABIP and xHR per my previous post, which you can find here. I am using net stolen bases instead of actual SB. Lastly, I summed up their (z-score) values based on the league format exclusive of position scarcity. Scroll all the way down to view the entire matrix.

Contingency: Let me make clear that my xOPS post that incorporates xBABIP and xHR does somewhat overvalue guys like Chris Davis and Mark Teixeira because it doesn’t take into account defensive shift effects. Same goes for Brian Dozer. While he doesn’t get shifted on really, his balls in play/pull approach does effect his BABIP. You will therefore see Dozier very high on all three of my expected rankings (for standard AVG leagues as well as OBP and OPS), because his xAVG based on xBABIP would jump 50+ points. He’s an extreme example. In any case, he’s a definite target of mine in OBP and OPS leagues.

Targets: I’m not going to baffle you with deep league names here. You can use the rankings below to justify your own targets.

First up at First base: Anthony Rizzo. He’s a monster. Period. He’s even more elite in OBP and OPS leagues. In fact, excluding position scarcity, he’s been the 2nd most valuable asset to date thanks in a big part to his last 5 games: 5 HR (8 H). Other 1B options with significant value differentials: Brandon Moss; Freddie Freeman and Adrian Gonzalez. I guess I’ll put David Ortiz here too. He’s not much of a surprise here, but his low BABIP/shift effect has killed his average (.242 right now), but he still has a .350 OBP and .850 OPS.

Second up at Second base: Brian Dozier. I liiiiike. Again, using xBABIP, he jumps quite a bit in value which effects xAVG, xOBP and therefore xOPS. Other MI options even better in OBP/OPS leagues: Anthony Rendon and Hanley Ramirez.

Third up at Third base: Josh Donaldson. He’s great for the HR and Runs Produced counting stats in standard leagues. ESPN Player Rater has him at 48. I have him at 19 (xAVG), 13 (xOBP) and 12 (xOPS) respectively. He’s clearly swinging for the fences. I think next year, he puts it all together and becomes a pretty elite option. Other 3B’s: Kyle Seager and Carlos Santana (I’m putting him in here since I didn’t make a catcher section).

Onto the outfield: George Springer is even better in OBP and OPS formats incorporating xBABIP, but perhaps my favorite target for dynasty leagues (based on your league mates valuing him) is Christian Yelich. He’s got a .360 OBP and OPS approaching .800 at only 22! He’s speedy enough that the groundball rate won’t kill you and when he does lift the ball, it’s far enough for a 16%+ HR/FB ratio. He’s a big-time target for me in even redraft but especially dynasty leagues.

Guys somewhat on the other side of the equation basically due to their power-speed combos which does a good job inflating BABIP: Rajai DavisHunter Pence, Ian Kinsler, Adam Jones and Charlie Blackmon.

*Use the first few columns (5×5 rankings using AVG, OBP or OPS respectively) and compare them to your leagues sites’ rankings and see if you can take advantage.

Follow me on Twitter @Rotobanter and request the full sort-able matrix! Here it is un-sort-able. “Too Lazy” means i didn’t feel like manually going through the the entire ESPN Play Rater. Sorry!

That’s a lot of great info.

    I was offered this trade:

    Give up:
    Carlos Gonzales
    Dominic Brown
    Travis D’Arnaud
    Jeff Samardizja

    Get Back:
    Jacoby
    Howard
    Lucroy
    Liriano

This is an 18 team, super deep league.

    Thanks in advance!

      dano says:
      (link)

@kidbr9: i mean from a staying on the field perspective i might already prefer jacoby and id take lucroy over tda so yeah id do this. You can always get SP (im not concerned about losing samardz).

  3. Chris says:

    Hello Dano,

I’m looking for a way to get Rizzo.
Would this be a good trade:

    Give: Yu, Cespedes, and Holt
Get: Rizzo, JD Martinez, and Morton/Wheeler/Shelby Miller

Which of the SP you prefer? The other team is giving Morton but I’m pushing more for Wheeler who has rebouned nicely and gets more Ks.

    H2H, 12 teams, 3 keepers.
My Keepers would then be Stanton, Encarnacion, and Rizzo instead of Yu.

    Many thanks.

    • Dano

      dano says:
      (link)

@Chris: i like this offer for you if you can get wheeler over morton or miller. I think wheeler takes a big step forward next year. His repertoire is great and most pitches next year should be above average meaning losing Yu doesnt kill you while Rizzo is a big upgrade. I do this. Stanton EE and Rizzo would be a huge to start.

  4. J Boy says:

Dank, would love to get your opinion – who do you look to deal out of Holliday, Melky or Dickerson in a deep roto?

    Thanks!

      @J Boy: *Dano, fn autocorrect!

    • Dano

      dano says:
      (link)

@J Boy: Holliday can hopefully still provide you a return. and he really is dropping off. I’d keep melky for run production (sandwhiched between reyes, bautista & ee returning). Dickerson probably wont get you as much as holiday would he? Id trade them both for an OF upgrade if possibe.

      • J Boy says:
        (link)

@dano: Thanks Dano – I’m way under on innings, looking to deal Holliday for 2 SPs – been offered Hendu Alavrez and Gee, both underrated, plus Jo-fer as a late round keep – league is QS instead of W. What do you think? Haven’t gotten a ton of bites…

        • Dano

          dano says:
          (link)

@J Boy: confused by your jo-fer statement. If u need innings you can do worse than Hendy and gee. If you’re getting Jose Fernandez to keep then for sure.

  5. Craig Waring says:
    (link)

Good stuff. In an OBP league and love value. Was offered Greinke for Kinsler and upon looking at this, thinking of doing it (snagged Alcantara a couple weeks back). I don’t absolutely need pitching but Greinke is a stud. Funny thing is that I countered seeing if he would also swap his Freeman for my Adams… Thoughts?

    • Dano

      dano says:
      (link)

@Craig Waring: I’d def prefer greinke. Nice counter. Hopefully he says yes. Freemans superioir to Adams in general and def in obp leagues. Here’s to that deal!

  6. WalleyWorld says:

Great read. I love this web site! I’ve been eyeing Yelich for quite some time now in my dynasty league. Reading this just confirmed my lust for him. What would be a fair offer for him? The guy who owns him in my league continues to ask me about trading for danny duffy. Would he alone be enough to return Yelich? I also have a few pitchers in the range of rugby de la rosa, colin mchough, and drew hutchison. Should I try and package something together? Thanks for the advice.

    • Dano

      dano says:
      (link)

@WalleyWorld: if he would take Duffy then do it! Duffys been hot but a bit of luck (i have a post on that next week). I just offered ellsbury for him and smaller pieces in a dynasty league cause hes going to be a stud

    Different question….

In leagues that use both OBP AND SLG, does combining the two into OPS, like on this matrix or on the Hittertron, make a good proxy? I’ve never been able to figure out if it’s a wise decision or if it skews the numbers.

    • Dano

      dano says:
      (link)

@Fish: in my full matrix that I send to you (email me a reminder) you can z-score SLG and then add that to the rest of the z-scores that you use and filter by your new zsum.

14 team keeper auction league, we can keep 3 guys the following year. Currently in second but need pitching, thoughts on the below trade?

Trade away: Frazier (5 dollar keep), Anibal Sanchez

Get: Seager (9 dollars if kept), price or wainwright, and segura

If I lose Frazier I can still keep gattis for 5, yelich for 5, wheeler for 5, or altuve for 18.

    • Dano

      dano says:
      (link)

@Jeb: i would def do this for a) price over anibal b) id probably rather keep yelich for 5 based on the longterm potential.

    Dan –

    How’s everything going?
I’m in a 9 team Auction Keeper league (Budget $270)

I did horrible this year so I decided to trade for keepers. From the following keepers can you let me know if there’s anyone you would NOT hold on to for next year and let go into the draft. I’m thinking I should keep everyone listed but I’d like your input

    Meserasco @ 12
    Gomes @ 9
    Freeman @ 24
    D. Gordon @ 12
    Rendon @ 12
    Machado @ 8
    Trout @ 26
    Harper @ 26
    B. Hamilton @ 19
    Stroman @ 12
    Gray @ 19

I also have Buxton and Baez @ 12 but I don’t plan on keeping them

    Thanks,
    Spencer

speeeence. By name, can you pair baez and buxton with say stroman or gray and upgrade to a big-time ace? offer gray, stroman, buxton, baez for kershaw? just a thought.

I love Freeman but his price and harper’s price for that matter shouldnt be approaching Trout price. WHat’s goldy’s price? Can freeman + baez & buxton get you goldy?

Considering you have hamilton i’d also see if someone might take say freeman, gordon, buxton, baez, stroman for tulo and an ace like kershaw/strasburg/scherzer depending on who you can pair with tulo.

Just some thoughts i.e. i’d keep everyone here other than Buxton and Baez at that price and or upgrade quantity for quality.

  13. Spence says:
    (link)

Gold is @26 but the team he is on is also out of contention and trading for keepers.

Should I offer Meserasco and Freeman for Gold?

    • Dano

      dano says:
      (link)

@Spence: if thats the case can you give him less including buxton & baez. If you dont have a CI spot (ie only use 1b) then yeah for sure. Dev’s a stud, but i still think this is fair. Goldys elite.
