I went looking around The Google Machine for Nick Castellanos articles and they go like this starting in 2013 to present (I’m paraphrasing):  “Is High-Flying Prospect, Castellanos, The Next George Brett?”  “Can Castellanos Be Better Than Miggy?”  “Castellanos Hopes To Bounce Back After His Lackluster Rookie Season?”  “One Bad Year Behind Him, But He’s Still Young.”  “Castellanos Puts Second Poor Year To Bed, Will His Bat Ever Awaken?”  “Castellanos Is A Platoon Player, Face It.”  “Castellanos Shows Bat Is Ready For Prime Time….Prime Time In India Where CSI: Mumbai Is A Ratings Disaster.”  “Castellanos Is Greek For Can’t Stand Yous.”  “Castellanos Finally Shows Glimmer, Is It Too Late?”  “Castellanos Surprisingly Not Related To Nia Vardalos, Still Ugly If You Look At Him Too Long.”  There ya go, that pretty much tracks the career of Castellanos up until now through article titles.  In Triple-A in 2012, Castellanos had all the makings of a hot prospect at the age of 21.  Now, he’s 23 and it feels like that’s in dog years.  So, where’s the optimism, is it that I can’t let a top prospect go?  No, and I take offense to that.  I let Jay Bruce go…after six seasons.  Anyway, what can we expect from Nick Castellanos for 2016 fantasy baseball and what makes him a sleeper?

Castellanos’s 2nd half was solid.  It wasn’t great, but it was promising.  Finally.  Now, I could cherrypick the junk out of his 2nd half to get him into the top ten in some offensive categories, but besides “Top Ten Hard Contact Percentage in the 2nd Half for Players Under the Age of 24” it’s not an easy cherrypicking assignment.  In the 2nd half, he had 9 HRs in 245 ABs.  If you were just to do a sloppy prorating job, that makes him a 20 HR hitter for next year.  In another insane case of Grey’s psychic, here’s what I said on July 24th of this year, “What do numbers call their father?  Data.  Thank you, Highlights.  You taught me so much with the juxtaposition of Goofus and Gallant, and you’ve entertained me for thirty years.  One copy, that is well worn, sits on the back of my toilet as my salvation, especially when Cougs forgets to restock the toilet paper.  Why am I thinking about data right now?  Because I just spent two hours (more like ten minutes) looking for something.  I was trying to find what a hitter does after hitting the longest home run of their career, then sorting by guys that do it before their 24th birthday.  Alas, I couldn’t find anything.  Elias Sports Bureau probably knows but they’re a bunch of baseball nerds.  We’re fantasy nerds.  Huge difference, we have imaginary friends cooler than their real friends!  My hypothesis I was aiming for is if a guy, who was once a well-regarded prospect is called up at a very young age, it might take a bit of time for them to acclimate themselves.  Then, once they were comfortable, they’d show power, hit the longest home run of their career and take off from there.  At this point, it’s just conjecture, but it makes reasonable sense in a case study of one.  So, who was this well-regarded prospect that just hit the longest home run of his career this week?  Castellanos.”  And that’s me quoting me.  What did Castellanos do after hitting his longest home run of his career?  He hit eight of his 2nd half nine homers and had his best half of his career.  July Grey was onto something, and it’s still in the air, which is not to say July Grey was on something, though that might be correct, as well.  I went looking further on his 2nd half and found an article by Eno Sarris of Fangraphs talking about how only four players improved their plate discipline in the 2nd half as much as Castellanos.  I’m telling you, something clicked.  He hit the longest home run of his career, he was spitting on pitches outside the strike zone, and he finally tapped into what scouts once deemed a bat-first 3rd baseman.  I don’t think he’s a sure thing that John Cusack would drive cross country for, but he’s definitely a guy I’m taking a flyer on for corner infielder.  For 2016, I’ll give him the projections of 69/21/81/.276/2 with room for upside.

    Hi Grey,

Quick one for you… Which side?

Taijuan Walker $21 annually for 3 years or Freddie Freeman $21 for 1 year

I have decent pitching and no 1B so in the auction I would be looking at Miggy or Davis for $50. Plus I’m a little scared of the Walker contract as he was so inconsistent last season.

if you are looking to win this year then Freeman hands-down besides Walker may take a few years to develop and you can always trade Freeman for a better potential stud if you’re not in the game

In anticipation of said rankings, I’ll ask now since I can’t think of anything Castellanos-related to discuss: h2h format seems SO different from roto so how do we, or DO we, adjust your rankings for that format somehow? I’ve played h2h 2 years now & it seems like a different world based on what I’ve learned from Malamoney here on RB where high K guys are almost worthless as hitters and relievers are almost worthless in the pitching world.

@Grey: same ol same, what’s the good word? Is it just me or did it take for-ev-errr for the new TC? How good did our guys cherry laquered pork belly look?! My guy needed that after another piss poor showing early in the episode, in front of Chrissy Tiegen nonetheless. Kwame is looking more and more like the guy to beat, he’s been impressive.

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

You think Kwame looks like the guy to beat? I was thinking the fish guy from Jean Gorges Miami Matador restaurant or Jason from Seattle… I like my guy still, but he doesn’t feel like the winner…

          • nick the dick says:
            (link)

@Grey: Yeah the fish guy for sure too, he’s been awesome. Jason is the gay carrots and galumpkis guy? He’s solid. Kwame has done no wrong as well though and works well with whoever he is paired with. He told you dem taters were gummy you yuppie asshole!

Yeah, gay carrots guy… Two personal notes, the douche from LA with the gummy potatoes and I went to his restaurant once and it was terrible… I honestly don’t know how he got on the show… Went to the Seattle guy’s restaurant while in Seattle, it was great, one the best meals we ate there…

@Grey: yeah definitely good. Weird how they do a whole new story with the same actors as different characters but definitely solid. Something about how they do those tight close shots gives it an element or realism. Andre 3000 is in it this season

@Grey: I liked the first season, maybe mostly in comparison to some of the awful shows my wife makes me watch, but I enjoyed the different feel it had. This season looks good, but if you weren’t crazy about the first one then most likely you won’t jump all the way over the fence. Worth watching either way? I think so.

  28. Mobin Can't Hack It says:
    (link)

holy shit news is out, not only did some idiot not change his passwords when he went from STL to HOU, i had always thought it was some low level twit, but nope, it was LUHNOW HIMSELF! so called genius is in this way dumber than most of the dumbest people we know. Also, STL’s legal team should try a defense claiming that keeping same passwords isn’t really a spy level of hacking, use the “child” defense. If an average 5 year old can “hack” your computer database since you were too stupid to do something as basic and obvious as just changing your password, the perp in this instance isn’t even really close to committing the same crime as somebody spending large hacking resources/technology/knowledge doing it. This “hacking” job is really in the light of day the hobo robbing a pregnant lady of her purse rather than the expert criminals of Point Break-type bank robbers.

    • Mobin Can't Hack It says:
      (link)

@Mobin Can’t Hack It: here’s a better metaphor, going further than the judge himself in the case used.
“Judge Hughes says of Chris Correa’s actions: “You broke into their house to find if they were stealing your stuff”

He could come back with not changing one’s passwords is the same as leaving your door wide open, not breaking in (still a crime of course, but not the same one).

      • Mobin Can't Hack It says:
        (link)

@Mobin Can’t Hack It: using the phrase “digital espionage” for opening up somebody’s account with passwords they never changed when they left their other job is laughable.

          • Mobin Can't Hack It says:
            (link)

@Grey: and didn’t have his underling change his email password. Parents would berate their 12 year olds for doing something this stupid.

              • Mobin Can't Hack It says:
                (link)

@Shill Team 6: i’m not defending correa here, just the utter idiocy of calling using passwords left over at your old job “hacking” or “digital espionage”, and finding it utterly hilarious that somebody revered as so smart in his quest to out think the rest of baseball can’t do something as obvious as changing a password. If i did that i’d be so embarrassed i’d just not report it. He looks way worse than STL does in this matter.

                • Mobin Can't Hack It says:
                  (link)

@Mobin Can’t Hack It: STL brass just happened to hire somebody dumb enough to think this wouldn’t get caught (which leads to curious point, why didn’t correa just use a device that couldn’t be traced back to him (like going to a college computer lab and waiting for somebody to not log off, this would work)), but that’s not even close to as stupid as not changing your passwords.

                  • Grey

                    Grey says:
                    (link)

I think it means St. Louis came to him and prolly said we need your old passwords to look at old documents from when you were with us… He gave them the passwords, then he used those same passwords in Houston and the St. Louis guys were like, “Let’s try the old passwords in his new system…Holy crap it worked!”

                    • Mobin Can't Hack It says:
                      (link)

@Grey: from other reports i’m pretty sure him and his underlings that left with him to HOU had to give up their computers to STL organization when they left, since they were company computers. When he set up his shop in HOU he simply forgot to make a new password for. This is since i’ve yet to read that account of it.
