@Jake, Completely agree, and have commented on, Jansen going so early and not being “the guy” yet. He’s like an $11 pre-salad amuse. The salad to come is not that expensive but, all it is is a head of iceberg lettuce quartered.

@King Wank, For our purposes here, Overachiever = likely to achieve less, while Sandbagger = capable of more. Overachiever probably could have been Overperformer instead. Not everyone has played spades either.

@Wake Up, They do, but if he goes into the season still tabbed as “the guy”, I think he has a shot to make fantasy owners who rely on Jansen alone uncomfortable. Grey’s got him down for 3.50/1.25 and with an 8 K/9 that’s not far off from some more name brand closers. There are others with xFIPs around 4 who aren’t being shunned too. Valverde, for example, had a roughly similar 2011 profile. I think it could take an injury or series of more than a couple blown saves, on top of Jansen dominating, for the old-school-in-blue to actually make the switch. I also had thought early on that Jansen would be a much better draft value, rather than a foregone conclusion. Posts about “handcuffing” relievers have become a trend, and this looks like another example.
