Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

If the Twins closer shituation were any crazier, it would be called Jeff Reardon.  For right now, grab Jon Rauch or Matt Guerrier.  In that order.  Where you can, own both.  Mijares, Crain, and Neshek are longer shots.  They don’t seem very likely to get first or second crack.  As for Joe Nathan… Well, Nathan’s shot, dawg.  He’s headed for Dr. Freeze.  If Twins fans are having trouble swallowing the pain of losing Nathan, Joey Chestnut could help.  If you drafted early and took Nathan, I don’t have much sympathy.  Should try to draft as close to the regular season as possible and you shouldn’t ever draft a $12 Salad.  I think Rauch emerges as a Donkeycorn when this is all said and done.  Don’t be wary of him just because he wasn’t a closer last week.  He was a closer before and did fine.

Anyway, here’s some more fantasy baseball news:

Alex Gordon – Broke his thumb.  Will now be held back and repeating his Sophomore slump for the third year.  I dropped him out my top 300 for fantasy baseball.  (BTW, Nathan was removed and Rauch and Guerrier were added.  Also, there were some other small adjustments.)  I wouldn’t touch Gordon outside of a 15 team league or deeper that had at least 2 DL spots.  At what point do Royals fans say, “Forget the next George Brett.  We’ll take the next Joe Randa!”

Russell Martin – Gained 20 pounds to regain some semblance of power (harder infield grounders!) and pulled his right groin.  And here we thought Alyssa Milano was in charge of pulling Dodger groins?  Rookie A.J. Ellis is an OBP machine (.437 in last two years in AAA) with less power than Martin (0 in 283 ABs last year).  Oh, and he’ll be the oldest rookie (29 in April) on the team since Hiroki Kuroda.

14 team h2h points league, my keepers are:

    B.J. Upton (3rd)
    Justin Upton (9th)
    Matt Wieters (11th)
    Mark Reynolds (17th)
    Carlos Gonzalez (22nd)

we start 1 of each IF 3 OFs and 1 UTIL. 5 SP and 3 RP.

I got the 8th pick, which turns into the 4th because 4 guys ahead of me are keeping 1st rounders. The top guys on the draft board (according to ESPNs rankings) are:

    Pujols
    Braun
    Crawford
    Teixeira
    Wright
    Longoria
    Ellsbury
    Holliday
    A-Gonz

If Tex is there I’m taking him, but if he’s not I’m considering taking Longoria or Wright and sliding Reynolds over to 1B. Or would you rather have A-Gonz than Longoria/Wright if position isn’t as much of a factor?

@grey: i’m starting to think that all the work that we razzballers do and the strategy that we razzballers employ is starting to lend itself toward drafting earlier in the season before the rest of the folks have the ability to read, digest, and catch up. you identified players in december that most sites are only starting to pimp now, and spring training is starting to expose others that have been on our want/avoid lists for a while.

@greenmountaincoffee: i’d think hard about zimmerman. he’s got age on his side, and there is a pretty monstrous drop off after the top 6 or 7 3B.

i’ve even toyed with the idea of trading rollins stright up for a 3B in my keeper league just because the guys that are gonna be available at 3B make me cringe. looks like i’ll be jumping on the ian stewart train, and i might even have to reach for him or else settle for beltre or something.

    HEYO!

I think I’m gonna play it safe and go Kurt Suzuki. No drama. Just solid, Hawaiian hitting. You’re gonna call me crazy, but if they keep him in the five-hole (like they should) I like him for 65/15/90/.285/5 (with maybe a smidge more room to grow on the power). If you look at his splits, he generally seems to hit a lot better with runners on. That’s looking a lot more like a poor man’s Miguel Montero and a lot less like a poor man’s Russel Martin.

Here’s a little bit of an odd Nathan question to ponder.

In a league where he will be auctioned off and the current owner can keep him for $5 more than the highest bid. Come August, I will have potentially 2 contracts to offer to pitchers for 2011 and beyond. I have the top closers valued in the $15 range given the parameters of our league.

I’m thinking that a $2-$4 bid would be a good investment (sort of like purchasing an option) and I can make the decision to sign him for another year when the time comes while taking things like which other pitchers I have and whether or not he’d even be close to 100% to start next season into consideration. I don’t think that the current owner would match+5, and a cheap Nathan seems like a good contract value for 2011 (and I don’t feel a couple bucks will affect my spending this year at all).

    Thoughts?

  34. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@J Matthews: If he has TJ surgery, he’s out until late 2011 at the earliest, so, no. But if he doesn’t have TJ surgery, then I’d buy him for $2 and make the call next offseason if you have the room to maneuver.

Hahaha, Matthew Berry’s top 250 is out.

I went in search of some “Dingle Berrys” (a horribly misranked player who will cause a sharp pain upon removal from your…roster) to laugh at, but there were surprisingly few. The ones that jumped out at me were Jose Reyes down at 53 (Jeter at 23) and Double-ii before Bay (60 and 68, respectively).

He has Stewart at 190, but I think a lot of other perts would put him there.

….Manny. Just saw that, and gotta admit, I’m a little surprised. Maybe reports of his demise have been greatly exaggerated. I think CHONE maybe regressing him too much – .949 in 2009 to .885 projection, possibly cause it thinks he was hurt last year.

He’s only posted an OPS under .900 once since (I was also shocked by this) ….1995. Kevin Spacey won an Oscar for the Usual Suspects that year. Just saying.

@Grey: Looks like the ol’ (and dreaded) H2H is going to expand to 14 teams (from 12) this year.

My (fairly loose) plan going in was to trust my (your) rankings, try to take advantage of any discrepancies btw the Albright 300 and Yahoo’s rankings, pay particular attention to my outfield (only 3 OF, no MI or CI) and wait until the Hamels tier before taking a pitcher.

In front of me, it’s either Pedro Alvarez or Michael Stanton. Who should I get?

None of them needs to play right away, and I got Butler at 1B/Stewart at 3B, no project at CI.

(Smoak, Jesus Montero, Chris Carter, and Carlos Santana are all available, but I got Soto at C and might trade for a draft pick if Smoak or Carter drops)

If I got Alvarez, then I might be set for corner for the next few years, but Stanton is kinda a tier ahead in terms of power.

If I got Stanton, then I might have to look a project for future CI.

@Grey: I’m trying to deal a 3b in my 11-team keeper. I currently have Zimmerman kept in the 5th round, Youk in the 9th, Wieters in the 11th, Pedroia in the 16th, Wainwright (17), & Beckham (22). Since it’s a Yahoo league with standard positions (3 OF, no MI or CI, 2 Utility) I’m either going to play Youk @ 1b (not ideal) with Zim @ 3b & Beckham at one of the utility slots or I’m going to move Youk/Zim for a pick. I’d like a bigger bat @ 1b than Youk & I’m not a fan of clogging my 2 utility slots before the draft even starts. I have an offer on the table where I give Zim for a late 2nd rounder (#21). Zim is also keeper eligible for 2011 in the 4th round… Our league doesn’t allow picks in rounds 1-4 to be kept, so that is another factor. I’ve all but accepted the trade, but wanted a second opinion before green-lighting it. Make the move?

@Grey: yeah, it would be Zim for his 2nd rounder, the 21st pick. Because we can’t keep guys for more than 2 years after they’re originally drafted, and can’t keep anyone taken in the first 4 rounds, I should have guys like Sizemore/JUpton that I could grab with his pick.

@Grey: I’m picking towards the end of round 1, so my plan is to grab the best available 1b there, get Holliday with my early 2nd rounder & Sizemore or Upton with the 21st. If there’s a run on OFs in the 2nd & both those guys are gone by then this plan gets blown up in my face. I’ll try and squeeze him for more since you seem on the fence about the deal. Thanks for the feedback

@Grey: Grey, same team: would you trade Greinke straight up for Reyes? I think my staff is strong enough to lose Greinke, and with it being a H2H league, pitching isn’t as important.

@GopherDay: I think you can get safer than Reyes or you can wait a few days to hear what’s up with his thyroid.

@chrispartlow: Point Shares is a combo of CHONE and BP’s AB projections. Just straight projections, I’d just look at my numbers or CHONE.

@mrbaseball: D? But I think this is a trick question.

Need to clear 3 reserve roster spots on my team (12 team H2H dynasty league). Should I keep Kyle Blanks and/or Fernando Martinez as a reserve outfielder? (Starting OF is Braun, Hamilton, CarGo, and Hawpe) Also, this is a 2 catcher league and I’ve currently got Montero, Iannetta, and Saltalamacchia on my roster. Thinking of letting one of them go. Should I keep all 3 catchers until their roles clear up or should I cut bait on one of these. 3rd spot will come from dropping either Rauch or Guerrier after the MIN closer role is decided.

Sorry for the long post. Love the site – great stuff!

I usually don’t read the comments (my loss it seems) but it looks like you don’t mind giving advice here. So here’s my predicament: The league is weekly head to head, and we count R, HR, RBI, SB, OBP, and TB for batters, W, SV, K, ERA, and WHIP for pitchers. I’ve narrowed my keepers down to the following, I need to select 6:

    Jacoby Ellsbury
    Andre Ethier
    Matt Holliday
    Ryan Howard
    Adam Lind
    Justin Morneau
    Hanley Ramirez
    Mark Reynolds
    Matt Wieters

    Who would you pick?

@Joe: Howard, Holliday, Ellsbury, Hanley, Lind and Reynolds…. Tough choices there. Wanted Wieters over Reynolds, but couldn’t pull the trigger.

grey, you have michael taylor at pick 271. based on your projections you probably envision him getting about 350 abs. he isn’t being drafted even in AL only leagues, so that is good news for those of us who want to jump on him very late in deep leagues. could you tell me what see that the drafting masses are missing? a backup round selection that pays off like mike taylor can be huge.

Lindstrom’s available in my 10 team NL only H2H league, I’ve got Qualls, Capps, Dotel. I think he’s the ONLY closer/possible closer left in FA (not including injury replacements) Is he worth a pickup? Do you think Lindstrom will run away with the closer role or will Lyon grab it by the end of spring training?

Unfortunately I don’t have much to drop at the moment, at least not until final cuts are made, but I could still see if I could work something out.

Thanks Grey (and anyone else who wants to chime in)

@incognithole: LOL study away…. i could draft a tottaly different team that will be just as good. Thats just what fell to me in this draft. Plus drafting from the 12th spot i see different players compared to say the 3 hole.

    The countdown is on…..

I am in a draft where i get to pick my draft spot. standard 5×5.

The spots already taken are: 4,1,7,2

need the top two choices since one guy gets to pick before me.

    what do you suggest?

    Thanks

    Rob

@jerome bishop: He’s MLB ready and he’s a 15/15 guy with a full time job. If he doesn’t have a job, I’d drop him further and not draft him. But until I hear that, I think he’s just as good as the Big FraGu.

    @Luke Bavarious: I’d own Lindstrom.

@Rob: I don’t know how many teams are in this league.

@grey: what do u see as the benefits and weaknesses of each?

@Rob: 8th spot guarantees you a big bat 1st baseman, but you have to wait for your 2nd pick. 12th pick you don’t have to wait for the 2nd pick. You get two top 13 guys.

Who would you take in a minor league system between Michael Saunders, Hector Rondon, Jhoulys Chacin

I asked a keeper question earlier this year and you surprisingly favored David Price. But after a well documented huge spring start for Heyward I’d be interested to see if your outlook has changed.

Its your turn to pick in a keeper league re-draft and Jason Heyward, Strasburg, Brett Anderson and David Price are available. Who would you take?

@Big Mike: Are there any other keepers on your team?

  93. Big Mike says:

well we keep 10 and the rest go back into the pool. No auction values and no restrictions on how long you can keep players. Draft position is based on previous years league standings.

    I currently have:

Jose Reyes, Ian Kinsler, Ryan Zimmerman, Kendry Morales, Carlos Lee, Hunter Pence, BJ Upton, Tommy Hanson, Ricky Nolasco and Wandy Rodriguez

@Big Mike: You have three outfielders, is this a 5 OF league?

  95. Big Mike says:
    (link)

4 OF league and a Utility spot. I have the #4 pick so I think my chances of getting Heyward have dimished which is pretty much what sparked me to ask the question because I know Price and Anderson will be there.

while I have your ear, I traded Jay Bruce for Kendry Morales yesterday. Good trade? I would have been targeting Konerko or Helton at 1b since none would have been available so I had to do something. I think I made out like a bandit but I have yet to read anything regarding Morales that doesnt expect a big regression.

@Big Mike: I don’t think he’s due for a big regression, just a slight one. That’s a good trade for you.

Any advice regarding Jose Reyes? I have him on my team already and not really sure what his thyroid problem will do to his value.
    Thanks
