Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Wil Myers was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his hand.  Experts are saying, “Guess you shouldn’t have drafted him!”  Those are experts in schadenfreude.  Other experts are saying he should’ve been wearing iron gloves called járngreipr.  But those experts are in Norse mythology.  Then there’s experts that say when he was injured he should’ve been going for a Chocolate Silk Pie Blizzard, but those are experts in Dairy Queen.  Are there any experts on injuries that weighed in?!  Oh, here’s one that says he’ll have his cast removed in about 6 weeks and could return in August.  Ugh.  I think I need a Blizzard.  In shallower leagues where DL spots are already filled, I could see dropping him.  In one 15-team league, I’m holding him, but Taijuan Walker is about to come off the DL, so I have room.  Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

Henderson Alvarez – 9 IP, 0 ER, 8 baserunners, 5 Ks vs. the dissa-Rays.  Alvarez has been pitching well, and I’ve gone over him before, but no matter who Joe Maddon puts in the three-hole, and he has put everyone, it’s just not working.  Yesterday, DeJesus got to hit third, which would only be good if this were a CYO league.

Chris Archer – 7 IP, 1 ER, 7 baserunners, 8 Ks, ERA down to 3.73.  Pitching even better than that 3.73 ERA (okay, not much better).  He has been a bit wild in his control, which could return a few 5 IP, 4 ER-type starts, but he’s definitely worth owning in almost all leagues.

Evan Gattis – 2-for-3, 3 RBIs and his 12th homer.  I guarantee anyone that has ever asked me if they should pick up Gattis has never seen him hit.  The ball jumps off his bat like he’s a 30-homer hitter.  Fo’serious.

B.J. Upton – 2-for-5, 2 runs and a slam & legs.  Damn, B.J., and treating for dinner?!

Tommy La Stella – 2-for-4, hitting .421 since his call up.  I saw his first hit and it was solid, then rolled between fielders and he nearly got thrown out trying to stretch it to third.  To paraphrase John Legend, “La Stella runs like he’s underwater and his hitting is fine.”  He also doesn’t have much pop.  With that said (here comes the reversal!), I’d grab a hot schmotato.

Michael Saunders – 2-for-5.  Now hitting near-.350 in the last week with two homers.  Saunders is like a poor man’s Michael Brantley.  I will call him Trader-Joe’s-GMO-Brantley.

Brad Miller – 2-for-3, 2 runs, 1 RBI.  Now hitting almost — ALMOST — .300 in the last week with a homer and speed.  I’m not dialing Cooperstown yet, but it’s something.

Alex Gordon – 2-for-4, 3 RBIs and his 6th homer, and 2nd in as many games and is now the Royals season leader.  Definitely paid for the Royals to invite all those old time Royal greats to the game like Steve Balboni, John Mayberry, Mike Sweeney, Danny Tartabull, Bo Jackson and Amos Otis.  Not to school the hitters, but to sit behind home and blow out hot air.

James Shields – 5 1/3 IP, 5 ER.  The Fantasy Baseball Overlord tied Wil Myers and Shields’s fates together for all of eternity or as FBO said, “Until I get off the pot.”

Kolten Wong – 1-for-5, 4 RBIs and his 1st homer.  Here’s a pregunta for y’all.  Wong or La Stella?  Wong and it’s not close.  In related news, I once knew this girl Stella who liked La Wong.

Jaime Garcia – 5 IP, 6 ER.  I hope you heeded my warnings about getting too attached to Garcia.  Next step will be hearing today that his shoulder is hurt.  I’m not even joking.

Yovani Gallardo – 5 IP, 6 ER vs. the Twins.  Ah, all is right with the world.  Cougs pass me a daiquiri!  No, I don’t want to watch Dear Zachary.  Why would I say that?  That shizz is depressing.

Josh Willingham – 1-for-4, 3 RBIs and his 4th homer.  Know what’s good with a Willingham?  A hot schmotato.

Brian Dozier – 3-for-3, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and his 12th homer.  So, someone didn’t like me ragging on his recent Tokyo Drift.

Gerrit Cole – 5 2/3 IP, 1 ER, 6 baserunners, 6 Ks vs. the Padres.  And with that I traded Cole off my team.  Actually, I made the trade before this start.  This start (stutterer!) had nothing to do with my trade.  I sent Jay(Wrong) Cole, Elvis Andrus, Rafael Soriano and Dallas Keuchel for…drum roll please!…Where the hell is the guy that does the drum roll? I got Tulowitzki.  As Rudy said, you sent him four quarters for a dollar.  With so many moving pieces, it could go either way, especially if Tulo, well, you know, I won’t ever mention it again.  All I’ll say is I’m getting him a Hamstrong bracelet!

Jesse Hahn – 3 2/3 IP, 4 ER.  Padres spot starter that replaced Donn Roach.  Kinda like how Jessica Hahn replaced Donna Rice as 80’s scandal bait.

Eddie Butler – The Rockies are calling him up to take Franklin Morales’s rotation spot.  Here’s what Prospect Scott said about him, “Butler busted out in grand fashion in 2013, posting a 1.80 ERA, a 0.99 WHIP, and a K/9 at 8.6 through 28 starts across 3 levels (A-, A+, AA).  His repertoire is very similar to (Jon) Gray’s, featuring a power heater, a plus slider, and an outstanding changeup.  The 22-year-old shouldn’t need much more time in the minors, and he’s a prime candidate for an early summer call-up.  Michael Wacha has taught us not to sleep on anyone tossing a filthy change.  Also, you shouldn’t sleep on Grey who is just filthy.  Shower, man!”  Hmm, didn’t remember that last part.  I like Eddie Butler because of his styling Ford Expedition!  *intern whispering in my ear*  That’s Eddie Bauer I’m told.  I grabbed Butler in one league, just to try out a little rookie nookie, but obviously everything great can disappear in a flash in Coors.

Carlos Gonzalez – Day-to-Dayzalez is… Guess!   How did you know?  He left yesterday’s game after he re-aggravated his finger injury and could be headed to the DL.  Shocking.  I know.

Troy Tulowitzki – 2-for-4 and his 15th homer.  Save some for me!

Cliff Pennington – Hit the DL with a sprained thumb ligament.  Pennington sprained it putting on his Izod shirt.  The Gregorius D.I.D. was recalled.  And if you don’t know, now you know.

Chase Anderson – 6 IP, 1 ER, 6 baserunners, 3 Ks.  You know when I say I wouldn’t pick up a player it doesn’t mean in all leagues.  In very deep leagues all players are ownable.  Any the hoo!  I wouldn’t own Anderson.  JB also gave you his Chase Anderson fantasy.

Jose Abreu – 2-for-4, 3 RBIs and his 17th homer.  The Grande Dolor!  You know one person’s fantasy team that is doing really well?  Fidel Castro.  You know he probably comments on Razzball too.  Never able to keep just one catcher, are you, Fidel?

Zack Wheeler – 6 2/3 IP, 0 ER, 4 baserunners, 7 Ks.  Member how we liked him back in March?  Well, he’s now thrown three straight Quality Starts with more Ks than innings.  Pick him back up now!

Jose Veras – Designated for assignment.  His assignment is, according to the Cubs, “Remind us again why we signed you.”

Welington Castillo – To the DL with a rib cage injury.  John Baker will take over the full-time catcher job and Eli Whiteside will be his backup.  Eli Whiteside was also the man that supplied Hyman Roth with a gun in prison that was wrapped inside a pound of lox.  Sorry, I’m just a bit of a history buff.

Ryan Zimmerman – 2-for-4. 1 RBI as he was activated from the DL and played left field.  Kevin in ESPN’s “Get Him In Your Lineup” Department was out sick yesterday and his understudy, Billy, said, “I can’t handle this pressure, I’m out of here.”

Anthony Rendon – 1-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and his 7th homer, hitting near-.400 in the last week and that was his 2nd homer in the last three games.  I wonder if February Grey has some kind of rare form of dyslexia that changes the names Anthony and Rendon to Brad and Miller.

Ian Desmond – 1-for-3 and his 11th homer, hitting .228 on the year.  Looked like all the strides he made to decrease his K-rate and raise his average in the last few years went bye-bye in April, but he was back around his career norms in May.  No accounting for his luck, but he should start to hit for a better average.

Denard Span – 3-for-5, 3 runs, raising his average to .281.  Even more awesome, before the game he said he’s not worried about Zimmerman in left field because he’s played with some ‘bad outfielders before.’  One guy kept trying to run through the outfield fence.

Jordan Zimmermann – 8 IP, 0 ER, 6 baserunners, 4 Ks, lowering his ERA to 3.59.  Prior to this game, his ERA was 4.07, and now JZ has brought himself back from Reasonable Doubt.  Surfboard!

Anibal Sanchez – 7 IP, 0 ER, 2 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA is now down to 2.15.  I wonder if a guy who is dating a girl named Anibal can say her name during sex and not think of Sanchez.  Deep Thoughts with Grey Albright.

Joe Nathan – 1/3 IP, 4 ER.  Granted, this was a Kazaam! with three of the runs coming off a home run that was given up by Santa K, but SAGNOF or not you should own Joba Chamberlain.  It just made me giggle thinking about the people who just found the site today and are like, “SAGNOF, Kazaam! and Santa K?  I’m going back to a site where it tells me I have to get a healthy Ryan Zimmerman into my lineup.”

Drew Hutchison – 7 IP, 0 ER, 3 baserunners, 7 Ks, lowering his ERA to 3.50.  Immediately went to look at Stream-o-Nator for his next start, then forgot what it said, so I guess I looked at amnesiately.  It’s the Cardinals and it’s lukewarmish on it, which I understand but he has pitched admirably well for a 4th fantasy starter.

Brandon Belt – On Friday, he’ll have his thumb cast removed.  He said he’s going to decorate the thumb cast and use it to simulate the Leaning Tower of Pisa for his ant farm.  Cool story, bro.

Tim Lincecum – 4 1/3 IP, 8 ER in Cincy.  Hopefully you saw Lincecum and it inspired you to puff puff pass.

Homer Bailey – 6 IP, 3 ER, 6 baserunners, 7 Ks.  I watched his entire start (I figured it’s the least I could do since I told everyone to buy him).  He looked totally fine.  Neither here nor there really.  The Hunter Pence homer (who went 3-for-4) was a ball that Pence gangly-fied, and then Bailey gave up a cheap run on a sac fly that could’ve easily been out at the plate.  I still believe the corner has been turned.

Devin Mesoraco – 1-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 9th homer.  Can’t wait to see where Rotoworld ranks him next year?  Trout or Mesoraco?  Tough call!

Jay Bruce – 2-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and a steal, which is just one good game amongst garbage, but as we all know Bruce is the kind to turn a two-hit game into a forty-game hit streak with 54 homers and sixteen ladies impregnated by looking at him.  Maybe that last part is Bruce Springsteen in Jersey.

Billy Hamilton – 2-for-5, 2 runs and two steals.  Billy Red Legs will pass Dee Gordon for the major league steal lead by…June 15th?  Sooner?

Johan Santana – Orioles announced he’d be ready to join the rotation on June 19th and at that point they will go to a six man rotation.  I have him stashed (I think; I drafted him a long time ago) in one very deep AL-Only league.  That is about the only place I’d consider him until he goes JoH.A.M. in at least two starts in a row.

Tommy Hunter – Threw 25 pitches yesterday.  Notice no one said they were good pitches.

Nelson Cruz – 1-for-4, 3 RBIs and his 21st homer.  Obviously his finger is still bothering him since he didn’t hit three homers.  Last year it was Chris Davis; this year Nelson Cruz.  Next year it’s your turn Markakis!

Adam Jones – 4-for-5, 2 runs, 1 RBI.  Since I feel like Adam Jones this year has been similar to Torii Hunter, which makes me want to cry, I sure hope this is the start of something.

Jurickson Profar – Won’t play this year.  Maybe him and Prince Fielder can now finally get around to honing their urban Laurel & Hardy act.

Adrian Beltre – 3-for-4 and his 6th homer.  The Orioles vs. Rangers game yesterday was obviously a panacea for fantasy baseballers everywhere who thought they weren’t getting enough from their early round picks.  Though I originally wrote it was an anathema, but that’s not any kind of omen, I’m just ignorant.

Robinson Chirinos – 2-for-3, 2 RBIs and his 3rd homer.  “You know I can shorten that name to Chiri.”  That was Carlos Beltran.

Mark Teixeira – 2-for-5, 2 RBIs and his 10th homer.  And I picked him up.  What?  He got one of those magical cortisone shots.  Quote-unquote steroids.  Ugh, so I picked him up.  Don’t look at me, I’m ugly!

Josh Reddick – Hit the DL with a hyperextended knee.  Word on the street is his hyperextended beard is just fine.

Scott Kazmir – 6 1/3 IP, 2 ER, 8 baserunners, 10 Ks, his ERA is now sitting at 2.40.  Ah, Billy Butler remembers his 240 era.  In high school.

Brandon Moss – 2-for-4 and his 14th and 15th homer.  I wish I owned him, not in the biblical way, unless that will get him on my team.  I’m a floozy!

Mike Trout – Left yesterday’s game after aggravating his back.  He said, “I wish you were my front!” and his back got all aggro.  I’m paraphrasing.

C.J. Wilson – 2 2/3 IP, 5 ER.  Must’ve been the shampoo.

Josh Hamilton – 1-for-3 and a home run in his first game back.  The shampoo does work for hitters.  Only explanation.

Jon Singleton – 1-for-3, 2 RBI and a home run.  He will forever be known as Gone Homerton!

Chris Carter – 2-for-4 and his 9th homer.  Gone Homerton and Hurry K’d Carter both K’d twice and homered.  They’re like Russian Nesting Dolls that look like Ryan Howard.

Collin McHugh – 5 IP, 0 ER, 4 baserunners, 4 Ks, lowering his ERA to 2.52.  As you think about whether or not you should own him.  You’re losing your league.  Yes, you are.  I’m sorry, sometimes you need tough love.  Now come here and tell me how school was today.  Don’t touch me!

Xander Bogaerts – 2-for-4, 2 runs and his 5th homer and 2nd game in a row with homer.  This homer came off T.J House, which gave a Fox exec an idea for a T.J. Hooker remake with Hugh Laurie and a CGI’d Humphrey Bogart.

Lonnie Chisenhall – 2-for-4, 1 RBI, hitting .364 on the year.  Lonnie gonnie and made himself a decent average hitter this offseason?  To answer my question with another question, what do you think?  His BABIP is .417 which would be a world record if Guinness gave a f*ck about BABIP.

Jason Kipnis – 2-for-4 and his 6th steal.  He’s on my short list for a buy low for this Friday, but he might raise his value by then, so act like you know, MC Lyte.  (And I know I told you avoid him in the preseason and that was obviously the right move, but that doesn’t mean you can’t buy someone low.)

Carlos Santana – Hoping to return “this Friday.”  That’s not the one with Mike Epps, right?

    UTIL- Frazier, Rizzo
    Bench- Taveras, Singleton, Bruce

Would you make any changes to who I’m starting? Thanks a bunch, love this site

    Rest of hitters look like

I own Axford in the rcl, so from a fantasy perspective it sucks for me. However as a fan, Cody has the stuff to dominate in the 9th and has looked filthy so far.

  19. Grey — So, who do you prefer between Wong and La Stella? Heh. Just kidding.

I’ve got Billy Butler as my backup 1B/sometimes UTIL. I assume that if/when Kendrys is signed you’d take him over Butler, no? Moreland (intrigued after reading gareth’s note on him above) and CCarter are also available.

How are you? Good write-up. You neglected to mention that the Rangers BP got bitch-slapped – Alexi leading the way. Then again, I guess Ogando getting knocked up is not really news-worthy given that he totally sucks and is no longer FBB relevant in even the deepest of the deepest AL-only leagues. Also, where has the good Neal Cotts from 2013 gone? He has completely and utterly disappeared. On a brighter note, I am so happy Col. Saunders didn’t get the win for Texas in the same game. He always serves up something greasy and meaty just like his KFC doppelganger. Lastly, I wanted to be the 100th schmuck to tell you that Kipnis got his 6th SB RATHER THAN what you wrote his 6th HR. Was I close? Ahhhh, shucks.

    Cheers,
    Ante

Just checked the injured list of DL’d players right now…now that is depressing reading.

Pinedas body seems to be as fragile as an ice sculpture, now moved to the 60 day DL. Drop him for Pollock in a keeper league? Had Pineda dirt cheap but if hes never healthy…

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

I drew a chalk outline around Pineda when he had the shoulder thing. I bet he has nothing but problems.

I’d make that swap. Pollock was on his way to a solid year and is still only 26 I believe.

@Mike: Make the swap? No other high upside guys out there, only Vogelsong who you know what he is. Never like keeping MRs around once theres little chance of saves from them in this league, as we count W+QS as one category, so no closing MRs are pretty useless.

Hey Grey. So I’m in a keeper league where we have 4 keepers. Harvey and Baez occupy two spots for me which I am not using. Arenado, singleton, and couple other more veteran players are possible keepers based on where I drafted them but can’t keep em all. My question is, is kris Bryant worth picking up off waivers since he’s just sitting there? Not sure if he’s gonna get the call this year but he’s such a big prospect who’s hitting well. General Thoughts on this situation? If you think I should pick him up, who do you think would be best to trade this year: Baez, arenado, singleton, Khris Davis? Sorry for the long question and thanks in advance.

    • Mike

      Mike says:

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

Hard to say without knowing your league, but with only four keepers I’d be targeting young (24-28) major leaguers in the top 50. Heyward is a name that comes to mind.

    • frankgrimes says:
      (link)

@Wadeboggs:With only four keeper I’d concentrate more on proven players instead of prospect types. My 14 team league keeps four and Harvey isn’t owned. Singleton was picked up this week and at this point would prolly be worth maybe a struggling third OF a fourth starter or a dee Gordon type.

          (link)

          @Frank White:

Best idea for this! Find the 2-3 guys you really want to own and are not currently up. Heaney, meyer gausman walker syndegaard ect. Pick your favorite 1-2 gotta understand not all will be successful.

Use twitter and actually search twitter with their name once week maybe twice. You will get a good understanding of each of their situations. Once you have that you will have a beat but you will always have to be proactive at least say 3-5 days before arm is called up.

Know who you would drop the instant you see the sign because your going to freak out and hand will start to shake and if you dont know who your dropping your wasting precious moments(remember them ha).

As you read up on these guys the people talking about them beat writers fantasy peeps, ect follow them. If they are talking about them now they prob will again when time is right.

Remember this is good, taking few minutes and making some guesses because if we were all pre emailed the list 24 hrs ahead of time then no one would have the advantage….we got to embrace the advantage

        • John says:
          (link)

@Frank White: THe more you follow the better just scope them out first make sure they talk about baseball. Also sites like this for example will help paint picture of who to follow or who to target when comes to the actual player once you get your list and tweek it then do what i said below.

          • Frank White says:

  63. Call to the Bullpen says:
    (link)

I am not sure what to do with my pitching staff. Because of salary caps and current prices I am slightly held hostage from just trying to trade for the best and/or picking up the best available on waivers. My current staff:
Hamels, Minor, Weaver, Lohse, Haren, Eovaldi, Chavez, Gallardo, Garcia.
The pitchers available on waivers are having bad starts to the season but I am willing to gamble…who should I choose: Masterson, Liriano, Kiroda, Garza, Burnett, Roark, Sabathia. Realistically, I can only choose one of these–unless Roark is worth it over Garcia, Haren, or Chavez–because I will be dropping Gallardo for the replacement starter. Who should I pick up?
    Also…if I was to make a trade…who should I expect for Longoria?
    Thanks…

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

I’d want Garza of that bunch. I like him over Garcia.

I wouldn’t trade Longo unless you’re getting a top arm in return. Selling low otherwise.

  64. sniff test says:

Better value ROS, Arcia or Morales? If Brad Miller comes around, is he better to own than either of those two?

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

probably similar and depends where Morales lands, but I still pefer Arcia.

If Miller turns it on I like him because of position and he’ll contribute steals

  65. Phoenix Rising says:
    (link)

Grey, need some pitching help. Could you rank these guys ROS that are available please?

deGrom, Butler, Rubby, Collmenter, Elias, Stroman, Cingrani

    • Mike

they’re all pretty similar. I like Stroman and Cingrani the best of that group

  66. Charlie says:

      (link)

      Walker

  67. Ghost of Lane Pryce says:
    (link)

I have Jon Homerton (hes not here to hit singles) on my minor league roster and I can call him up whenever. Khris Davis is the last man on my bench as an extremely cheap 2015 keeper.

Is it worth cutting bait on Khrush to have Singleton in the lineup immediately? Or will they have reasonably similar ROS projections?

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

I’d try to trade Khris since he has keeper value.

SON doesn’t like Porcello or Chavez today – would you take a chance on either/both?

    • BigRedLatrine says:
      (link)

      @Mr. Rickey:

Im in the same boat, and I’m starting Chavez, benching Porcello.

Chavez was @toronto and home vs detroit in his last two and didn’t get outright exploded, so I’m willing to go with him @new york.

Porcello gets no more starts until he stops taking dumps on my bench.

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

both are risky. If I had to choose one to start it would be Chavez.

man I like both those guys in your OF… I guess drop Arcia and keep Davis

  71. Amolnar says:
    (link)

Need help about my roster. I think I am holding too many hitters compared to pitchers. It’s a 12 team, roto, keeper league (can keep up to 10 guys), and the normal 10 categories as scoring.

I dropped TEix for Singleton yesterday as I know when Teix has played he’s been solid but the injuries are scary and i hope Singleton can put up similar stats.

With that said here is the squad:
    C: Lucroy
    1b: Crush Davis
    2b: Aaron Hill
    3B: Beltre
    SS: Hanley
    OF: CEspedes
    OF: Cuddyer
    OF: Kemp
    Util: Oritz
    Util: Singleton
    B: T. Hunter
    B: Wong
    B: Jennings
    B: Pagan
    B: Xander Bo.

    Pitching:
    P: Britton
    P: Stroman
    SP: Kershaw
    SP: Liriano
    SP: Hutchison
    SP: Pomeranz
    RP: Robertson
    RP: HOlland
    B: Sonny Gray
    B: Wacha
    B: Tyson Ross
    B: Heaney
    DL: Jose Fernandez

I am doing fine in the hitting department but I am falling behind in the accumulation pitching stats (k’s, wins,). Second last in both. I would like to do a 2 for 1 trade of 1 OF along with a lower tier SP for a upper tier SP. Any suggestions on buying low and any trade offers that might actually work. I have thrown out Hunter/Hutch or Hunter/Ross or Jennings/Hutch and Jennings/Hutch a couple of different times but I can’t get a deal.

Do I need more pitching for the row or not? I am not that behind on k’s and win’s but its def. enough where I am contemplating doing something. Also, are any of my hitters droppable? I just can’t drop any of them but there is nothing on the WW for pitching so I have to do a trade.

Any suggestions would be helpful. T

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

yeah, I usually don’t carry many bench bats so I can accumulate more pitching stats. I’d explore trades with your bats for some arms.

Grey, how do we reconcile your suggestions with the ROS Player Rankings on the site? I presumed all along (I guess falsely) that your rankings were fairly simpatico with that tool but considering your dislike of players like Samardzija versus their relatively high ROS ranks, seems that tool operates on a different plane of some kind? I won last year listening to you so I’d love to see your personal ROS ranks if that isn’t taken into account by the tool.

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

I think ROS rater is based on Steamer projections, but tool questions would be more Rudy’s cup of tea…

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @Clint: What Mike said

    • @Clint: Grey’s points on Samardzija is that he’s bound to regress because he’s likely not a sub 3.00 ERA pitcher (the last start knocked him over that mark). His ROS stat line is 3.80/1.26. That’s in line w/ his 2012/2013 average.

Grey harps on guys whose perceived value is higher than their actual value. That was the case with Samardzija during his $22 May. Not the case now that he’s pretty settled on being a solid SP3/SP4 whose biggest plus is strikeouts and biggest issue is probably WHIP.

  76. Matt says:

Taijuan Walker is holding down the 11th SP slot in my H2H Points league. Last night he struggled, throwing 56 pitches through 2 innings, walking 4 and only hit 90-91mph. Any concerns?

I’ve got Yordano & Butler out on the wire in this league.

    • Mello Yello says:
      (link)

@Wudaben: I would wait until Yordano’s start on Thursday. If he is anywhere near the pre-elbow scare, then jump on him. Otherwise, hold on (because you’ve probably been holding for a long, long time).

I like Dee Gordon but if he continues to have 0-4, 0-5 or 1-5 games would it be time to move on? He’s been great contributing to the steals but if he’s 0-4/0-5 & not getting on base he won’t have steals lol, now I’m thinking of dropping dee & watch him have multiple hits + steals & sprinkle in some rbis/runs too rest of the week. Even if I wanted to make a change (I play him at infielder spot) the roster is locked until Monday AM when everything unlocks. Here’s who I’m thinking of as a replacement at IF spot, kolten Wong, jon singleton , prado, Mark Reynolds, jimmy Rollins, Kyle seager & everth Cabrera.

      • Cram It says:
        (link)

@Mike: I agree with Mike. I’m holding. I think everyone’s overracting to what, back to back hitless games? Before that he had hits in 4 in a row with 4 SB’s. And 7 out of the last 9 with 9 SB’s. Sure maybe he’s a .250 hitter. Depending on needs, maybe you go with Wong or Singleton or Reynolds. In that case, trade him.

I really don’t like Anal-ball. The guy stunk in 2012 on my team and it finished a very close second. Then on another guy’s team last year he is great and helps that team win.

How you can be named Anal-ball when your last name is Sanchez is beyond me.

PS, to all Papi owners, I am benching him today, so y’all should start him. In all this stretch, I benched him one time and he homered. Absolutely nothing else in all the other games.

@Mike: I should have mentioned that you can only keep two hitters so it depends somewhat on who people have currently on their roster. I have a lot of options already but I feel like it’s worth a shot as he will occupy a DL spot for now then I can decide what to do later on.

In an 8 teamer, H2H, cody allen is available. I only have 3 closers (Papelbon, Doolittle and Frieri). My starting pitchers are a well working group (Santana, Gray, Wacha, Teheran, Eovaldi, Kazmir, Cobb, Anibal). I am considering to drop Eovaldi for Allen. What do you think? I mean in an 8 teamer there are always good pitchers on waivers. Someone dropped Bailey two days ago. Just as an example.

    Two quickies:

    1) Tony Cingrani – any ROS value as a SP or likely back to the bullpen when Latos comes back?

    2) Wil Myers – Worth holding in a keeper league for an 8th round pick next year? Certainly has limited to no value for the rest of this season, but doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy who will be forgotten next year because of his name brand.

    OBP league:
    C – Rosario
    1B – Pujols
    2B – Dee Gordon
    3B – Miggy
    SS – Desmond
    CI – Singleton
    MI – Hill
    OF – Bautista
    OF – Arcia
    OF – L. Martin
    Of – Willingham
    Util – Starlin Castro
    Bn – Rajai
    Bn – Myers (DL)
    DL – Trumbo (OF/1B)
    DL – Matt Adams (1B)

    a) Can I drop Adams so I can DL Myers? I would like to add Dickerson.
    b) Assuming holding Myers is the right play even though it’s 10 team redraft?
    c) I have a glut of great SP, leading in all pitching categories, and tracking ahead on innings. Worth exploring OF upgrades via trade or continue to work the wire/wait for DL guys to come back? I’m in 1st overall and near the top in most hitting counting stats.

    • Mike

      Mike says:

        Scherzer
        Price
        Teheran
        A. Sanchez
        Kluber

I am leaning towards Arcia but I really like him and I know either Simon or Cingrani might get booted from the rotation soon. Should I wait to activate Zimmerman? This is in a 12 man keeper league 7X7 counts OBP and BAA.

I picked up Rubby, too bad I dropped Wong earlier this year….anywho, will he stay up. Any Boston people out there? Is there excitement up there for this kid.

    • Moronymous Lohse says:
      (link)

@Wilsonian: Shameful what they are doing in the ATL to these young kids. Floyd shouldn’t have to pitch out of the bullpen “because he’s a veteran starter”? Yes – he is. And a shitty starter at that. But that’s Freddie’s reasoning. It is impossible to root for a team that insists on batting BJ Upton 2nd, keeps A. Simmons at the bottom of the order, abuses its bullpen, pays $14 million to Ervin Santana and completely screws with its young talent because you must defer to Gavin f*c*ing Floyd. It’s like the Braves organization insists upon taking donkey sized dumps into the mouths of their fans. As a person living where the Braves are moving to I say – f*ck ‘em. Most of us in Cobb County are Red Sox fans anyway. :)

      • Wilsonian says:
        (link)

@Moronymous Lohse: I completely agree. He’s probably their second best starter. I still think he’d end up with better numbers than Santana if he started all year. And Harang has been hot garbage for awhile, too. He’s gotten incredibly lucky this season. He was sent to the trash heap before the Braves picked him up and they waste a great young arm like Wood for that sh*t?!?! Turrible. Just turrible.

    Oh Wil Myers…..

Is he worth holding onto in a 10 team keeper league where he’ll be $7 next season and $10 the following season?

    I keep 5 players.

My other low priced keeper (Fernandez at $7) has already been dumped. I’m in first place for now but my keeper pool options are getting weaker by the day.

*fingers crossed Polanco goes off when he gets called up*

    Gray,

To me, one of the biggest challenges of fantasy baseball is evaluating the top prospect call-ups. For every George Springer or Michael Wacha, there’s a Trevor Bauer (the Dbacks version) or even a 2011 edition of Mike Trout.

I say all that because I’m sitting here w/ Oscar Tavares and want to maximize his value. He could tear it up ala Springer…or he could be a platoon type player once Adams returns. I can deal him for Andrew Cashner (my SP is weak) and then replace him at the Util position with Bogarts. How do you generally handle prospects and would you endorse that deal? Thanks a lot!

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

@Edward: I could see that deal if you need pitching… Rookies are high risk/high reward….

  156. Rondelio says:

I accidentally added Duffy. Drop him for Melancon, Jaba, Masterson, or Wade Davis? I have Betances, and him + Wade Davis could be a nice K/WHIP/ERA combo.

    Thanks Grey,

  157. Mike says:
    (link)

Corey Dickerson is on waivers and I really want to claim him….. very unsure who I should drop though need help.

Drop Wade Davis, Everth Cabrera, Collin McHugh, Porcello or Pomeranz? It would seem like Wade Davis has the least value as a RP but I like to go for WHIP and ERA every week and he helps alot especially since I have 7 closers using up all my RP spots and I can slide Davis into my SP spot since he is eligible there. Cabrera I like for his steals but Im thinking Dickerson will have more value ROS…. McHugh is pitching well. Porcello and Pomeranz not soo much… so maybe drop one of them? What do you think?

This Peralta kid looks like a hitter, also what Scott said, but he’s listed in ESPN as a pitcher. It’s Jason Lane, the outfielder for the Astros until like 2007. He has spent the last 7 or so years reinventing himself as a pitcher.

Should I just go ahead and drop Gyorko for Dominguez?

Kipnis is my regular 2b. I have xander covering ss/3b in the mi slot, headley at third and alcides as my every day ss.

Dominguez would replace gyorko on the bench and be a 3b fill in if headley keeps being mediocre/terrible.

Its not ideal, but the are ZERO capable second baseman available in free agency in my rcl to replace gyorko as a 2b backup.

    • Cram It says:
      (link)

@gareth: Peeps be too worried about shitty bench bats. You keep Gyorko and then the one game you need him to fill in, it’s like “shit he’s facing Darvish, let me get someone else in there.” Rendering all this consternation moot.

      • MattTruss223 says:
        (link)

@Cram It: I agree 100% Cram, let the FA Pool be your “2b backup”. Why do you need to carry a backup middling infielder in a league with 3 bench spots? The answer is, you don’t.

Gareth, if you need a fill-in, wander your hairy heiny to the hitter-tron and see what 2b has a high rating for the day. Today for instance you could pick Flaherty, Odor, Schoop, LeMahieu, Grant Green, Valbuena or Kelly Johnson. You could even choose Brandon Hicks, Rickie Weeks (Or Scooter if he gets the start today), Brian Roberts and Tommy LaStella, ALL of whom are rated higher then Gyorko today.

@MattTruss223: Haha. Thank you for support. Just trying to educate one fantasybaseballer (Grey’s mom’s term!) at a time. Gareth is quite the project though.

        • gareth says:
          (link)

@MattTruss223: kipnis was on the dl for a month so gyorko was my starting 2b for a while there (yuck).

I totally agree that its not logical to keep gyorko on the bench. I think at this stage its just hard headed stubbornness that has me still keeping him.

You WILL perform Gyorko. Grey said so!!!

          • Cram It says:
            (link)

@gareth: So keep him. He’s just a bench bat anyway. If you have faith (in Grey) you’re not harming your team by having him on the bench. It doesn’t matter how they perform on the bench!

that team that tried to trade reyes/braun/ellsbury for gattis/s.pearce/lohse was found to actually admit to trying to “destroy the league” and was kicked out (since when do James Bond villan types join fantasy leagues?), and we will be shrinking from 15 teamer to 14 till next year. we’ll snake draft his players tomorrow. If I’m weak at OPS/AVG/hitter K’s/homers/RBIs, in that order. i’m strong at runs/net steals. does this ranking look about right? i’ll get a top 5 pick, and probably not another, but if people don’t show up (that happens) could get 2. i’m weak in pitching ratios, innings and QS also. strong in net saves and holds.

Albright, I took a look at your Cole trade. Really interesting move. First, you just don’t see a lot of 4 for 1 trades in FBB, so that alone make it worth a look. My general philosophy is in any shallow/daily league, the guy getting the best player in a trade is going to win most often because of the high replacement level.

I have to disagree with Rudy in that it’s 4 quarters for a dollar. More like trading dollars for euros. What I mean is that you obviously made the trade to address weaknesses and trade from strength. There was a tactical shift.

First as to the players. I like both Cole and Keuchel a good deal. Own both in separate NFBC leagues. I think Cole in particular is capable of a very hot summer that lives up to his September last. But in RCL you don’t need them. I am currently rostering 0 starters in RCL (technically I’m sort of carrying Buehrle for a few starts but it’s more like an extended stream). In my opinion you should only be carrying Teheran as an SP right now. There are plenty of attractive MRs on the wire and your stream options are excellent; it’s a low stream low turnover league so you have an opportunity to dominate pitching in this format.

The more interesting pieces here are Soriano and Andrus. Right now you’re sitting 2nd in saves (14 clear of 3rd) and 3rd in steals (9 ahead of 4th with more close pursuers). You’re last in homers, 5th in RBIs, 6th in average.

With the loss of Soriano you’re down to just Bellasario with a spec on Joba. But I like the risk here for a couple of reasons. One, you’re going to be quick to the waiver wire for save spec when/if they come up. You also have a decent sized margin to work with right now. You could also make another smaller move before the break to add more saves. And you can hopefully pick up a couple of saves here and there by virtue of holding MRs on nights when the regular closer can’t go. I see at least two guys on the wire who are possible CIWs that you should hold as well.

Steals are a bit trickier for you even than saves. Your total is inflated because of the start Bonifacio got off to and when you add the loss of Andrus, I think there’s some point loss risk in the category. This is just one of those things where you’re going to have twist the knobs, as I like to say, because you’re not holding a lot of 5 category guys. You have power only and speed only in number of players, so between your daily rostered starters and your streamers you’ll want to make sure you’re making up ground where you need to in the power, but don’t let a steals weakness creep in and cost you points there.

And Tulo kicks ass. If he does Tulo stuff all year, he’s going to be a difference maker in all the places you need help.

I think this is a really smart trade for you. It comes at a point in the season when there’s still time to move up where you’re weak and control the downside where you currently have advantages by virtue of some of the cushion built up. I also think it’s a recognition that this team isn’t shaping up quite as good as last year’s winner. Just a few more holes in the offense. So I think it shows a solid evaluation and a good decision to do something a bit radical early.

    • @OaktownSteve: Aren’t we saying the same thing? You just took a lot more words. Four lesser players (let’s say non-top 60) for a stud. All of them are solid and are owned in the majority of leagues. Agree it makes sense for Grey to take a chance on a big bat. He had good success last year streaming though I do think he got super lucky with 3rd-tier relievers (guys like Hawkins throwing sub-2.00 ERA). The trade works for Jay-Wrong too.

Grey’s advantage in grabbing relievers is less this year IMO because 1) we added in some Razzball ‘perts in place of some less active experts and 2) I am not as stocked on relievers as last year (i was 6-7 deep for almost the whole year with K-Rob being the worst).

      • OaktownSteve says:
        (link)

        @Rudy Gamble:

Yeah I shouldn’t have said I disagree with you exactly without more context than the soundbite. I was responding to my take that four quarters to a dollar captures the sense that it was a fair exchange but not necessarily the subsequent analysis that it represented a tactical move dictated by the category rankings rather than just an attempt to gain advantage through the 4 for 1.

I can see that the reliever situation is different this year in that league. There appears to be a higher percentage of the quality MRs rostered and CIWs are mostly gone. But there are also about half of the teams in that league making very few moves so far.

As to the MR luck, I don’t see that exactly the same way. Seems like the methodology is you sift through the MRs slowly over the year and when you catch a hot hand, you stick with it and sometimes it sticks all year.

The biggest advantage in my opinion is that guys like Cole and Keuchel, while very interesting in other formats are worse than useless in RCL. They actually aren’t worth the roster spot the occupy relative to the value of the stream plus the additional quality innings and win chances you get from the extra rostered RPs.

I obviously agree since I made the trade… I’ll be picking up more MRs once this trade clears since I’ll have more roster room… I’m actually most concerned about losing Soriano, but will have to make due… Not at all worried about losing my SPs… Cole was basically a streamer so far anyway and I just picked up Keuchel…

      • OaktownSteve says:
        (link)

        @Grey:

yeah…based on Rudy’s note I am kind of rethinking the Soriano risk as well. You do have 16 in the bank to work with which is material. You’ve got 49 so far. You’ll want to get to around 100 on the season. Let’s give Bellasario a generous 20. You need to work your way into 30 more saves to be about right where you want to be. If Joba got the job you’d almost be home. McGee is a possibility to. Plus maybe you get 5-8 junk saves from non-closers. But it’s addressable with a deal closer to the deadline with another trade.

I think the reason I called steals a little trickier is you might have reason to believe your safer there than you might actually be after this trade. I could see that category start to bleed pretty quick with Andrus gone. And you’re going to be focused on power so the risk is to swing too far the other direction.

Looking to add a SB/R OF as a bench bat and to help with my matchup this week in 6×6 (OPS), as I have a huge lead in power, slim leads in SB/R and am getting killed in pitching (would replace Werth for now): L. Martin, Revere or Span? Does EY Jr pass them when he returns?

Same format, you prefer Dickerson, Willingham or Arcia as a longer-term investment?

13 team, pretty deep roto. Heyward’s my 4th OF. I have two closers. I’m in 1st place with a double digit lead and leading in HR/RBI/SB and middle of the pack in Saves. Would you accept Addison Reed for Heyward? Kinda don’t want to fix what ain’t broke but Reed’s job is fairly safe yeah?

    • goodfold2 says:
      (link)

@Cram It: i would think both that’s a good trade and reed’s job is safe. they really don’t have good set up guys, and from last year they’d much rather have putz (when he’s back) setting up. Although Reed’s stats aren’t good and that team of his doesn’t get many wins.
