[...] A few players missed the cut: - George Brett – The Kansas City Hall of Famer is one great season away from election. His top 5 seasons listed by rank among third basemen are 1, 2, 2, 4, 5 with the last two also being outside of the top 20-overall. Can we elect a player who didn’t have 5 top 20 seasons when his FBHOF peers all have? It’s a shame, but he doesn’t quite make the cut. (Brett also lost 6 seasons to the 70’s and would have easily been elected had these years been considered). One possible way to induct him is to give the guy a 3 point bonus for his anger management issues.
This game is one of my favorite baseball memories. I remember being at Royals stadium when Darrell Porter hit a home run, Jamie Quirk hitting a foul ball right into my dad's hands and watching this game on TV. My parents let me stay up to watch the end of the game (I was 11 at the time). I remember being so excited when George was coming up. Then the home run and I was going to bed happy. Then my dad caught my attention and pointed at the TV... I remember watching as the umpire walked toward the Royals dugout, pointed the bat at George and called him out. I think my Dad and I both screamed at the TV at the same time (his probably had a few profanities in it, mine was a simple, "WHAT???!!!!"). George tearing out of the dugout like a mad man. I seriously thought he was going to punch the umpire. Gaylord Perry stealing the bat and running up into the clubhouse. Pandemonium. And amazing. I will never forget that game. Of course, I was happy when the ruling was reversed and they played the rest of the game with the Royals ultimately winning (2 weeks later I believe).

That's a good story. I was a little too young to appreciate it when it happened, but have seen the video many a time over. It's pretty hard not to fall in love with baseball when that's your first game, right?

I haven't had that same opportunity to witness any "great" baseball memories (i live in Pittsburgh...) But still love baseball all the same.

<em>Emmett Jones's last blog post..<a href='http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/SportsBusinessDigest/~3/243010796/' rel="nofollow">MMA puts boxing down for the count.</a></em>

Terrific piece. The great thing about baseball is that those kinds of crazy events are just rare enough to be special, but they happen just often enough to give lots of fans some kind of experience with them.

I was in Cincinnati in 1993 when Mark Whiten slammed 4 homers and had 12 RBI in the second game of a doubleheader and also got to see David Cone throw a perfect game at Yankee Stadium in 1999. I'll never forget either experience and I love telling the stories to other baseball fans.

Good stuff. Billy Martin was sure a great character. I recently came across an A's "Billyball" giveaway I got at what was probably one of my first games.
