Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

There’s talk that the M’s might punt their closer, just not in the same way the O’s have.  They’re talking about trading David Aardsma.  Member when the M’s were going to be a contender?  That was a fun two weeks in March.  We were younger, you and I (hey!).  You had more hair (hey-oh!).  Doesn’t it seem like every year the pundits latch their unrealistic expectations on a team?  Member when the Royals were going to win it all in 2009?  My prediction for March darling to June dud team of 2011?  The Nationals.  But they have Strasburg and Zimmerman!  Yeah, and John Lannan and that doode you don’t know who plays every other position.  So, Brandon League would take over the job if Aardsma is moved.  I grabbed League where I could because, well, I’m a save vulture, swooping down on closer carcasses any chance I get.  Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

Jarrett Hoffpauir – Was called up by the Blue Kays.  He was hitting the ball around pretty good in Las Vegas (in 259 plate appearances, only struckout 15 times and hit 9 long balls).  But what happens in Vegas, well, you know.  Right now, I don’t think our neighbor to the north gives Hoffpauir every day duty (hehe, that sounds like doodie).  I think they move Fred Lewis into the lineup and start Bautista at 3rd base in Edwin Encarnacion’s vacated turd hole he was filling.  Hoffpauir’s worth a lookie-see in AL-Only leagues, since he has 2nd base eligibility in ESPN leagues.

Edwin Encarnacion – Oh, and he’s gone in case you didn’t pick up the above context clue about vacated turd holes.

Everth Cabrera – Could return as soon as Friday after going 0-for-3 with a strikeout and two grounders.  Yup, he’s in game shape!

Mark Reynolds – 1-for-2 with his 17th homer and 4th steal.  For Mini Donkey, today was a good bray.

Justin Upton – 3-for-3, 2 homers, a steal, 4 Runs, 4 RBIs and one old lady saved from the right field pool.  J-Upside, it’s good to see you.

Adam LaRoche – 1-for-4 and a three-run homer.  The clock struck the summer solstice yesterday and LaRoche turned it on.  May sours, June swoon.

Gio Gonzalez – 7 IP, 0 ER, 5 baserunners, 9 Ks in Oakland.  Gio’s becoming a bit of a homebody with his splits.  Over 5 ERA on the road and under 3 at home.  That makes his next start at home vs. Pittsburgh look real nice.

Kevin Kouzmanoff – 2-for-4 with his 8th homer.  If you want to own Kouz, now would be the time.  Actually, yesterday would’ve been– Well, you get the drift.

Cristian Guzman – 1-for-3 with his first homer.  In other news, there wasn’t a whole lot of baseball games yesterday to talk about.

Carlos Beltran – Reports are coming back that he could begin a minor league assignment within the next week.  That means the New York hype machine about Beltran returning should pickup soon giving you a chance to sell him.

Coco Crisp – Could return this Friday from the DL, but he’s become very injury-prone of late, so tread carefully.  I.e. Coco beware.

Scott Podsednik – 4-for-4 with no runs and no RBIs.  Ah, the joys of being a Royals leadoff hitter.  Some guys who have more runs on the year:  Juan Rivera, J.D. Drew, Aubrey Huff and Adam Dunn.

Mike Aviles – 3-for-4 as he continues to Charley Lau the ball all over the field, hitting near .400 over the last week.  A small nugget to store in the “Read Then Discard” section of your medulla oblongata is how he can’t hit lefties.

Bruce Chen – 6 IP, 2 ER, 7 baserunners, 3 Ks and his 84 MPH fastball battled Livan Hernandez (7 IP, 1 ER, 9 baserunners, 5 Ks) and his 82 MPH as National Radar Gun Day was observed in Washington.  Hope the radar guns did something fun on their day off.

A.J. Burnett – 4 IP, 7 ER, 11 baserunners, 4 Ks.  [sarcastic] Good to see his K-rate bounce back. [/sarcastic]  There’s reports that his foot is bothering him, some are theorizing he’s tipping his curveball or just not locating it properly.  For those that like why’s, awesome.  All I know is this guy wasn’t just bad last night, he’s been terrifically bad for the majority of his starts.  I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get sent to the Disgraceful List.  Either way, I’m not starting him in any league for at least one start and probably more.

Phil Hughes – Will be skipped in the rotation as the Yankees try to limit his innings.  Though they should probably limit Burnett’s innings.  I’d expect more of Hughes getting skipped in September as they prepare for the playoffs.  On the scale of no-likey for H2H, that’s about an 8.

Brett Gardner – 4-for-4, 2 Runs and his 23rd steal while hitting 8th.  Yesterday, Jayson Stark said Gardner is on pace for more Runs than any other player in history who has the majority of their ABs from the 8 hole or lower.  Actually, he didn’t say that.  He did say, “Kurkjian, stop your screeching!  I’m hungover.”

    Hey Grey,

    Speaking of David Price, do you think he is just going through a lull or is the shine coming off a nice start to the season? My gut is inching toward the latter, but what does it know. I would try to trade him and a few other people in that case, but no one in my small H2H even thinks trades.

    Also if you were adding another SP, would it be Mat Latos or Colby Lewis?

    Thanks, Grey…

    Hai grey

    have some pitchers who start tomorrow with marginal situations. Thoughts on whether to sit or start:

    Latos @ TB

    Cecil vs St. Louis

    Ervin Santana vs LAD

    also, in a standard 5×5 h2h league, would you rather play cargo vs Lester, Brett gardner vs haren or Nelson Cruz (and his first game back) vs some jabroni for the pirates?

    Thx again

  5. joe from point pleasant says:

    @Grey:

    Tyler Colvin has been raking this season to the tune of a .985 OPS. It is even more impressive when you consider much of the time he is coming off the bench, cold, and providing big pinch hits which is obviously very difficult to do. Piniella says he will give Colvin more PT, and this week the cubs are in an american league park with a DH. Colvin has 6 games to prove he should be a starter. I am thinking hard about picking him up today and using him in my 12 team mixed.

    Anyway, here are my questions:
    1. Do you think Colvin will get a starting spot to himself within the next month?

    2. Do you think that, provided he does get that spot, he will produce enough to be an OF3 in a 12 team mixed?

    3. How are you such a genius?

  6. LMack says:

    Start Scott Baker @ Milwaukee?
    10 team roto league, big leads in ERA and WHIP, ahead in W, K.

  7. knighttown says:
    (link)

    Speaking of terrible pitchers (Burnett), Nolasco gets the frigging Orioles next. I mean, if you own him, ya gotta start him, right? What if you own him and you’re +50IP and sitting Haren, Ervin and Latos due to tough matchups?

  8. It's In The Other Bag says:
    (link)

    I have a ton of OFers. Ethier, Pence, BJ Up, Bosch, Gomes, Stanton, Tabata, Pagan. I also have Olivo and Montero at catcher.

    I’m looking to get a top tier pitcher. Many other owners sorely need OF and C help.

    Would an offer of Olivo and Scott for David Price or Josh Johnson be too much? Should I offer Olivo and say Tabata?

  9. ThePoonTycoon says:
    (link)

    @It’s In The Other Bag: i would laugh in your face and tell you i’d make do with WW fodder at C and OF instead of trading away good SPs for crap like olivo and scott/tabata.

    you are probably gonna have to part with at least pence/upton/boesch from your OF crew to get a SP like price or johnson. maybe you could entice someone with stanton in a keeper league if they are in rebuilding mode and you are dealing for an older guy (say carpenter? or oswalt?).

    also, are you willing to deal montero? cause i think olivo is back to being olivo, which isn’t much of an upgrade over 75% of the Cs in the bigs. i mean, i had a guy trying to convince me it was in my best interest to upgrade from napoli to suzuki, and that i should give him a solid usable piece in order to upgrade. i told him he was a fool if he thought there would be much difference between napoli and suzuki come september, and napoli could easily be the better player.

    otherwise, if you want a SP and only deal away olivo + scott/tabata, you need to aim in the marginal SP4/SP5 range.

  10. ThePoonTycoon says:
    (link)

    @It’s In The Other Bag: essentially though, unless you’d include ethier, i wouldn’t even consider giving you an SP in the johnson/price range of youngsters performing at high levels with high ceilings

  11. @Grey: Can’t wait for the next ride in the EverCab! My picking up DeJesus was in anticipation of my BA/OBP going to hell when the speedster gets back.

    I don’t think Posey/Rausch for Haren was too much of a lowball offer in a keeper league, do you? My would be trade partner is very emo and hasn’t responded yet, making me think he’s basing his decision on how Haren does tonight.

    – as a Met fan (and Pagan worshipper), I hate to say it, but I’m almost hoping Beltran doesn’t come back, because I’m guessing they’ll put stupidly put ‘Los back in Center and bench Pagan instead of Frenchy. Jerry will explain the move by saying something to the effect of, “Pagan’s gangsta. I like him coming off of the bench.”

    – Any idea where the DA is headed? I have him in one league (where League is already rostered) and would hate to see him sent to set-up man land for a team like the Dodgers or Tampa.

    @It’s In The Other Bag: What ThePoonTycoon said. Come at me with a Tabata/Olivo offer and I’ll give you Jason Hammel if I’m feeling generous. You’re going to have to give some quality if you want quality back.

  12. ThePoonTycoon says:
    (link)

    the biggest shit talker in my main league keeps going on about his pitching staff. i can’t wait for playoff time (h2h) when hughes, strasburg, hanson, garcia, and maybe even kershaw begin to have a lot more starts skipped or get outright shutdown. i’m gonna laugh my ass off. hughes is already getting skipped.

  13. steamer says:
    (link)

    As a Johnson & Price owner (well I just traded Price), I wouldn’t consider that offer. It would prob take Eithier for me to move Johnson or Price.

  14. steamer says:
    (link)

    As an Aarsdma owner, should I be looking to move him now? The problem is, I only have 2 closers (him + Bailey), but there’s an owner in my H2H league that will trade me Lincecum for Aardsma + Liriano + a throw in OF like Borbon. Already have J. Johnson, Felix, Bills, E. Santana, Scherzer, Gio, Garcia. I had Marcum, but just traded him for Grandy.

    Everyone knows Cruz comes off the DL today.

    On my roster, its a toss up in my opinion of dropping either Franklin Guitierez or Ike Davis, or possibly Josh Willingham or Stubbs. But I’m leaning most toward Franklin G.

    My roster in a H2H 6×6 12 team league where I’m in 4th place:

    C Napoli
    1B M Reynolds
    2B Uggla
    3B McGehee
    SS H. Ramirez
    OF J. Hamilton
    C. Granderson
    A. Pagan
    Utl J Willingham
    D Stubbs
    Bench
    F Guitierez
    Ike Daviz
    DL N Cruz
    DL K Morales

    The only reason I like Ike Davis is because all my utility and bench spots are otherwise OF’s which doesn’t give my much flexibiliy on Mondays and Thursdays. But, Ike Davis is easily replaceable. And Franklin aint been living up to expectations.

    Do you agree with dropping F Gutieriez, or would you hold him and drop someone else

  26. @ThePoonTycoon: Yeah he’s in for a wake up call come September. I have Jaime in my h2h league too, so I’m hoping he doesn’t get shut down. Can’t see it happening if Stl is in a race though.

  28. GopherDay says:
    (link)

    Would you drop Simon for League?

  29. ThePoonTycoon says:
    (link)

    @3FingersBrown: yeah, it’ll depend on how tight the race is, and even if it’s tight, whether these guys tire out down the stretch to the point that they are ineffective without some rest. all of them are gonna have starts skipped here and there throughout the remainder of the season i’d imagine so that ideally (for their real teams) they aren’t burned out come september/october and can help for the pennant push and the playoffs. obviously strasburg is the most likely candidate to be outright shutdown in september, but depending on how the races shake out i could see any of these guys being shut down over the most minimal injury. their futures are too bright, and they are too important longterm to their teams than to text the limits with them.

  30. Jeff says:
    (link)

    An extension of my question above. 16 team 5×5 roto league, we can keep only 3 players each year. I’m in 4th the other team is in last.

    What do you think of Votto (10th round keeper), P. Alverez (19th round keeper), OCab, and OHud for Utley, Reyes, and L. Scott

    Grey – any chance Gardner takes over leadoff spot this year?

  35. @ThePoonTycoon: I don’t know about Kersh or Hanson, but I definitely see Hughes being on an innings limit. Garcia perhaps too to a lesser extent (he was never as highly touted as say Hughes). Garcia will most likely come back down to Earth at some point, but I’m happy riding him in the mean time, since my SP is pretty thin.

    Add Matt Latos and Brian Matusz to that list – particularly Matusz, since like Strasburg, his team won’t be playing for October.

    @GopherDay: I wouldn’t. Simon’s got a closer gig already and an awesome nickname. Shutdown Sauce!

    @Wah: I like Howard’s side too. I don’t see Hart keeping up his ridiculous power pace, nor do I think Beltran will really provide all that much when he returns.

  44. ThePoonTycoon says:
    (link)

    @3FingersBrown: kershaw and hanson are obviously the least likely to get shutdown, but i can definitely see some starts skipped randomly throughout the season, and if the dodgers or braves fall out of contention for whatever reason by september, then all bets are off. a sore arm in may, you get it checked out and you play through it to an extent. a sore arm in sept with little or no shot at the playoffs? you shut it down for extra rest so you don’t injure it more seriously in a meaningless game.

    @NukeLaDouche: that is a bad deal, at the moment. Depending on needs of the guy getting Pacman and Kinsler, however, it might not be THAT bad. I honestly don’t expect the Impaler to continue his insane bad-ass-ness all season long. Pacman has been better as of late, and Kinsler could become the stud he’s always projected to be, barring a blister causing him to have to get a foot amputated.

    @NukeLaDouche: Hope it’s not for money. I am in a league with some old college buddies and their friends for money. I have never even met 2/3s of the guys in the league and there have been some strange deals, but nothing along the lines of the one in your league.

    Oh its not for needs. The guy giving up Howard and Vlad is rostering JP Howell who is out for the season and this isn’t a keeper. Earlier he traded Crawford to the same guy for Krispie which seemed a bit odd but whatever. Losing Howard means he is either putting Wiggy or Luke Scott at 1B. The guy giving up Kinsler doesn’t care because he has Utley and Phillips. I’m almost positive its collusion but I have no way to prove it.

  64. ThePoonTycoon says:
    (link)

    @Wilsonian: well when the other options are kouz and gomes, then i’ll take upside over boring mediocrity. and while kouz and gomes have been hot at times this year, they are still known quantities. smoak is hitting like people predicted he would this month. he can develop quickly into a mark teixeira type 1B…~.300-~35-~110 with good OBP type guy, and that’s what he’s hitting like in june.

    @Grey: Who do you like on Top Chef this season? Would love to see one of the brothahs win it but I get the feeling that Angelo is going to win. I am still hurting after my boy Kevin Gilespie didn’t win last year. MMMMMM, perfectly cooked pork

    @ThePoonTycoon: yeah thats what i decided to do. You guys think i should drop Stanton for Smoak? Topic change!

    Grey, preseason you had Rollins ranked slightly higher than Reyes.

    Given the injuries to Rollins, is it fair to assume that you would grab Reyes today for the rest of the season if you were given your choice?

    @majortommy: HA! Angelo has it in the bag….and in the butt. Seriously though He is good, Xie Xie rocks.

    @Grey: Thanks for all your tireless opinions oh great Mustachioed One.

  72. majortommy says:

    @XnadyMen: I have heard it is great from my buddy that lines in NYC. I don’t know if they stepped up their recruiting efforts in the last two seasons but the talent has skyrocketed. The days of Ilan and Hosea caliber chefs winning are gone.

    Hi Grey, I’m hurting for steals, and somebody dropped Figgins. Do I drop Kelly Johnson (cooling down and maybe losing PT to Abreu) or Juan Pierre (who sits on my bench and that I use occasionally to get a few steals)?

    Also, speaking of steals, is it a good idea to drop Alexei for Alcides? Or should I just monitor the Alcides situation a few more games?

  74. XnadyMen says:

    @majortommy: The X lady got me into the show last year, so I am not sure of past peeps, but we hit a few of the NYC contestants joints from last season and they weren’t so hot. I agree this season looks a lot higher quality. Good looking with last years winners name, I gotta hit the Woodfire Grill next time in Hotlanta.

  75. majortommy says:

    @XnadyMen: Apparently Atlanta has become a hot bed of great food, definitely have it on my list. Woodfire sounds like my kind of place.

    Hey whats up Grey!

    Quick question for you. Bottom of my rotation is Brett Cecil, Ian Kennedy and Carlos Silva. I was thinking about dropping Ian Kennedy for Jason Hammel. How do you feel about that one? I know you are usually high on Kennedy. He hasn’t been getting wins and his ERA hasn’t been great. On the other hand, Hammel has looked great, just striking out slightly less batters.

  77. Long Bong Hitters says:
    (link)

    CLiff Lee
    Javy Vazquez
    and Jamie Garcia make up the rest of my starters.

  78. majortommy says:
    (link)

    @Long Bong Hitters: Carlos Silva has to turn back into Carlos Silva at some point, no? Between that and Cecil’s tough division I would keep Kennedy, but it is not my mustachioed face on here, so my opinion is that, mine.
    cough, cough, silva, cough

  79. Long Bong Hitters says:

    I know, I would think Silva would have to revert back yet, but – he hasn’t yet. I’ve been thinking more and more lately that this is simply Carlos’s career year.

  80. Grey

    @XnadyMen: No problem.

    @majortommy: Yeah, almost a bit too much talent. The bad chefs that skate by add good drama.

    @DrEasy: Sure, grab Figgins. Or just play Pierre. Alexei over Alcides.

    @Long Bong Hitters: Agree with majortommy.

    @Grey: I have Silva on my Razzball team and have patiently been awaiting his inevitable implosion, just sitting here, waiting and waiting and wait……

    @Grey: who do you like better (if either) for this year only – bumgarner or hellickson?

    @cashmoney: Ibanez…

    @majortommy: Yeah, he can’t even suck right.

    @Wah: Votto’s. Not really a trade I’d make though.

    @herschel: Bumgarner…

    Oswalt vs SF
    Cecil vs StL

    @Grey: Can Colvin produce OF3 stuff in a 16 tm league?

  89. tHe ShiT says:

    @Fantasyace: Take it. Strasburg will b really gd, but will get his innings limited, so he will b useless 2 u when he gets benched…

  90. Nuke LaDouche says:

    stanton or smoak?

  91. Cole says:
    (link)

    I picked up Manny Parra today for 2 reasons. He has pitched well in his last 3 starts @StL, vs Tex, and @Col –Three tough opponents. And also because as the next few months wear on he will be seeing a lot of Pit, Hou, SF, Chi, and Was. Just a heads up to anyone who loves them some upside.

  92. tHe ShiT says:

    @Nuke LaDouche: Smoak imo. Texas heat+gr8 lineup+better plate discipline=possible ROY stuff…

    @Grey: Rest of season, in a vacuum, would you rather have Ricky Romero/Jonathan Sanchez or Dan Haren?

  94. aj says:

    Would you start either J. Garcia @ tor, Niese @det

  95. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Lob Ball: Not sure why you wouldn’t start them.

    @tHe ShiT: Sure…

    @Nuke LaDouche: Stanton…

    @Cole: Thanks for the heads up!

    @Seequinn: Sanchez…

    @aj: Depends on the situation.

    Re: Podsednick/KC Leadoff hitters

    Davey of Jesus has been a totally useful OF/Util guy for me.

    Being the Royals’ leadoff hitter is like being the table-setter for an anorexic. (http://www.hiyoooo.com/)

    Would you trade Dan Haren for Colby Lewis at this point in the season?
