Guess what, ya’ll?! New closer in Atlanta. That’s right the Braves lost Peter Moylan to an injury so Manny Acosta takes over until Soriano returns. Soriano is due back soon, but he’s injury-prone so this may seem flippant, but Accardo came out of nowhere to save a lot of games last year. You never know where saves are going to come from, but we know they will be coming from the new (fill-in) Atlanta Braves closer, Manny Acosta. Anyway, here’s what else I saw:

Alfonso Soriano – Was hurt catching the ball. He didn’t look good at all being helped off the field. Maybe Murton time? I picked up Murton in one NL-Only league, just in case.

Michael Bourn – All he does is steal bases. No, seriously, that’s all he does. Is it me or are there more all-speed, nothing else guys now than ever? Bourn, Gomez, Gathright, Taveras, Pierre, a third of the Giants lineup, etc. It’s a renaissance for speed guys. It’s like someone cracked down on power-enhancing drugs or something. Weird!

Andruw Jones – I said this about three months ago, but he seriously may be retired within three years. He’s lazy, ya’ll.

Erik Bedard – Hits the DL. Yeah, and doodie smells.

Jose Valverde – He was not a reliable closer before last year. Don’t forget about Brocail.

Jair Jurrgens – He walked Willingham on a questionable pitch (who stole his second base of the day!) then Jacobs got a clean double to score one run. Then Willingham inexplicably hit a triple later in the game. Jurrgens looks great so far. I hope people are paying attention. BTW, April 17th is Benihana Thursdays in Marlins Stadium! (I can’t even imagine what this is, but it sounds wonderful. Maybe Alfredo Amezaga flips shrimp tails into his shirt pocket?)

Shawn Chacon – I’m sure glad I have him on my Razzball team. Ugh. Maybe Pineiro can throw a shutout later in the week.

Mark Teixeira – He’s starting slow. Yeah, and doodie still smells.

Derrek Lee – He’s headed for a big year.

Chad Qualls – Might be slowly working his way into the closer role.

Aaron Hill – Could be very valuable to balance out your fifth outfielder who only steals.

Aaron Harang – I know it’s a little consolation because I have him on a few teams too, but the wind was blowing out big time in Wrigley.

Joey Votto – I’m getting the sneaky suspicion that Dusty might actually play him regularly.

Krispie Young – 13 hits, five of which are home runs, with 18 strikeouts for a .228 average. Cust kayin’.

  1. I’m stealing Cust kayin for a team name next year. Hey, is Matt Diaz in any danger of losing playing time based on his slow start? He had a similar April last year then hit .680 the rest of the year. Thinking of picking him up in a 12 team league where he was just dropped.

Herb Urban’s last blog post..I’m back, baby

troy tulowitski bad start or this years bobby crosby because he has looked completely lost at the plate since the season began

Think Diaz actually hit .890 from May on. Diaz is just a slow starter but I think anytime you’re dealing with Cox you have to be slightly wary. With that said, in a 12 team, you gotta grab him.

Tulo will be just fine. Once it starts warming up in Colorado, the Rockies will start hitting. Also, Tulo hit .244 in April last month, could be a trend that means the best is yet to come.

Hey Grey how about Matt Kemp sticking it to Joe Torre yesterday with that fine game? 2 hits (beat out an infield one late that was called an error), a triple, 3 runs, RBI and SB. No one is happier than me right now. I’m hoping he takes Maholm yard tonight and cements his rightful starting status. Course I’ll be happy with just a couple hits again. Tell you what, watching this guy round the bases, I don’t want to be the catcher in a collision at home plate.

  6. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

Yeah, he looks great. I’m sure Torre will find a way to bench him in favor of Nomar.

  7. Carl says:

    LoL…no doubt.

Grey, I’m thinking of dealing Fielder for a couple good players to increase my depth. As you may recall we’re in a deep 9 team NL-only league with 30 man rosters. Very slim pickings in the FA pool. Think all this salary talk and vegan thing has zapped his power? He hasn’t even come close to going yard in any game. Not even a fly ball to the warning track.

  8. Grey

    Grey says:

@Carl: Guess it depends on what constitutes good, but I would want more for Fielder than someone would probably give me.

So Sheffield has hit the waiver wire in my yahoo 12 h2h league, is he gonna be worth the waiver? The whole Detroit sucking so far, and his shoulder and finger or am I stupid for even debating this and just need to pick him up?

  10. Grey

    Grey says:

@john: I would drop another bench player or a MR for Sheffield, yes.

  11. john says:

Yea, I knew I was just being absurd debating it

Guys – IF you had gone relievers-only and IF you had Saito and Neshek and IF you were to pick up a starter to try and maybe pull back ERA and WHIP, who would it be:
Parra or Lohse v each other!
    Hammel @ Twins
    Lee @ Twins
    Wellemeyer v Giants (Cain)
    Westbrook @ Twins

  13. Grey

    Grey says:

@Steve: Westbrook, Lee, Parra, Wellemeyer, Hammel, Lohse in that order.

I’m not going to claim Bourn is going to win a batting title anytime soon, but I’m also not ready to say “nothing but speed” until David Ortiz, Adam Dunn, and/or Prince Fielder pass him in the HR race.

@Jim: You’re totally right, Jim. Many times on this site I’ve raved about Bourn being a guy who can get you 5 to 10 home runs. As far back as December:

I was half-teasing with the above comment in the post.

I’m curious (sorry, if you’ve mentioned recently and I missed it) how you’re feeling about Encarnacion at this point – I know you were high on him in the draft.

I’ve got Encarnacion and Blalock. Someone just dropped Zimmerman… Edwin’s been looking at least a bit better this week but I’m leaning towards dropping him for Zimmerman and holding Blalock (I can’t afford to carry all three).

  19. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@Jim: Wow, someone dropped Zimmerman? Well, I wasn’t (and still am not) very high on Zimmerman, but I think you have to drop Blalock for him.

Wow Carlos Villanueva is a bum. I knew something was wrong when the Giants slapped him around. Now he gets rocked by the Cardinals. I can’t take much more of this shit.

    This week alone:

    Lilly – bombed
    Hill – bombed
    Arroyo – bombed
    Villanueva – bombed
Dempster – bombed (oh but gets the win!)
    Kuo – 6 k’s but doesn’t pitch the 5th so no win.
    Harang – Bombed
Volquez – pitches well but no K’s

Ok and I just watched Fielder struck out on a bad pitch from Flores…he looked totally lost the whole at bat. What a fatty.

Someone pass me a bucket…I need to freakin’ hurl.

    Grey,

Just got an offer – Francoeur for Corey Hart…what are your thoughts?

@Carl: I like Francoeur, but I think you have to do that trade.

  23. Carl says:

Wait I have Hart…he is offering Francoeur…I believe you mean Hart is the better player?

  24. Grey

    Grey says:

@Carl: Thought you were getting Hart. No, I wouldn’t trade Hart for Francoeur.

  25. Carl says:

What about this one (sorry to inundate you) I just received:

    I give:
    Fielder
    Diaz

    I get
    Teixeira
    Victorino

Tex and Fielder I think will put up similar numbers and if Victo is healthy he can give me runs and steals. I think Diaz is hampered by hitting 7th-8th all the time and doesn’t score. Any thoughts?

  26. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@Carl: I know you hate Fielder right now but I still see him better than tuh-Share-a. (You know Tex is a notoriously slow starter that may not get going for two months?) Victorino is better than Diaz, but he’s showing himself to be a bit injury-prone. I don’t think this is the kind of slam dunk trade you can get with Fielder, but, with that said, it’s a fair trade that I could see you doing if you needed some runs/steals. But read Victorino’s injury report a few times before you do this trade:

An MRI of Victorino’s (15-day disabled list) right calf revealed a strain, reports the team’s official website. The strain is less severe than the one which drastically limited him during last season, but the MRI also showed a slight tear in the meniscus of his right knee. He is hoping to begin running by next weekend, and could start a rehab assignment shorty thereafter.

Between the lines, he relies on his legs. His legs are giving him problems. What seemed fluky and a one-time injury last year, has this year been confirmed to be a recurring thing. I loved Victorino going into this year. He was still drafted before I wanted to take him. Let’s just say, I’m glad he’s not on any of my teams.

Thx Grey I appreciate the insight. It’s really hard to hold the trigger here, but this early I gotta have faith my guys will come through. I just really hope Fielder doesn’t stink this year. If he doesn’t hit a homer by the end of the month, I might have to push the panic button. At what point do you say enough is enough?

  29. Grey

    Grey says:

@Carl: I’d wait a long time on Fielder. Probably late May. But every player is different.

  30. Carl says:
    (link)

Wow Grey, I complain like a bitch and now Fielder has ripped the ball his last two at bats including a homer. I should do it more often.

Waaahhhh…when is Rich Hill going to get it together…wahhhhhh.

We’ll see if that works. :D

Grey…Wow what is Lannan smoking tonight? 11 k’s in 6IP, where did this come from? I was thinking of grabbing Bailey off waivers, but this guy is K’ing a good team. What do you think?

  32. Grey

    Grey says:

@Carl: It’s a mirage. Next thing you know Fielder will be hitting a home run.

  33. Steve says:

@Grey: Picked up Lee based on your recommendation. I am indeed not worthy.

Can you promise Westbrook will be as good?

  34. Grey

@Steve: re: Westbrook, against the Twins today — definitely. Moving forward, have to be on a start by start basis.

  35. Steve says:

Oh I’m starting him alright and I need him to be good. Although Cliffy gave me a huge drop in ERA, my opponent this week (my sister!) had Haren yesterday and has McGowan today so her ERA is not too shabby either!
