I have a major man crush on Alex Avila. What will Prince do for Avila’s stats? I can potentially see Avila batting 7th or 8th now. But it also means he will be seeing a lot of pitches do hit. Does this move bump Avila or set up any other Tiger to have a better season?

I don’t think this increases Fielder’s value. Worse home park for home runs, no difference in the quality of the hitters ahead of him (besides the pitcher/#9 hitter AL/NL difference), and Cabrera behind him is little different than Braun behind him.

Obviously it doesn’t really work like that, and Cabrera should help, but still I think the power takes a proper hit (or if it doesn’t, it might come at the cost of batting average).

@sean: i heard someone suggest (i don't remember who, may have been in the comments of an earlier post, or maybe Keith Law) that the Tigers had insurance on V-Mart's contract. so with his injury, they may have gotten money back. probably not $214M, but maybe enough to make a move that the needed to do (as Grey said).

Tree Quick Points:

1. Drinks are on Miggy, who just became the clear #1.

2. Fielder’s going to miss hitting HRs in Miller Park. Moving outside in the Midwest can crush April/September power numbers. Not to mention center field being a home run graveyard in Comerica…

3. Dave Cameron asked the $214M question: if the Tigers had $214M to spend this winter, why weren’t they in on Reyes or C.J. Wilson, addressing their glaring weaknesses as opposed to this being more than a desperate reaction to losing V-Mart?

Question from the Future: What does Fielder’s departure do to Ryan Braun’s fantasy prowess when Braun is released from captivity?

In other words, where would Braun have landed in your 2011 rankings without the suspension but with the Fielder departure?

Oh hey, did I say that the Royals were going to win the Central? Well this kind of changes things, dontchyathink? The tiger has new stripes, eh? He has received a blood transfusion. He is eatin’ his vegetables.

Thus and therefore, I withdraw my previous forecast and replace it with the forecast that everybody else is going to have: Le Tigres win the Central. Royals will coast to a comfortable 2nd place.

What are the odds he pulls an Adam Dunn. I know Dunn wasn’t a top 5 MVP, but it seems the move from NL to AL DH for big power hitters isn’t great.
