Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

I love the Aussie people; they have goofy words for a barbecue and even goofier animals — koalas and kangaroos?  Is Australia animated?  Those things are goofy!  Why not just get a duck-billed platypus and anteater and call it a day, you wacky-animal-having country!  How about baseball there?  Did all the fans in attendance win a Bowie knife if a player hit a home run into the big marsupial pouch?  Did Crocodile Dundee throw out the first pitch?  Did the batters hit with a fraternity hazing paddle?  I don’t know, because it was at four in the morning!  Selig really needs to stop doing this to Opening Day.  The players will be exhausted from traveling and won’t be able to get their usual reps in during the spring.  The first pitch of the season should be at a time when 7-year-old North American boys and girls can watch it.  Not at 4 AM EST.  What if the first game went extra innings or someone got hurt?  Can they just call up someone from the minors for the next game?  No, so then you’ll have a team playing short.  Do these stunts in December as a goodwill trip.  Don’t make major league baseball teams into the Harlem Globetrotters for a regular season game.  Eh, whatevs, baseball is back, who cares if it comes with a big helping of Vegemite.  Anyway, here’s what else I saw for fantasy baseball:

Justin Turner – 1-for-4.  Started the first game of the season and hit 2nd (oy).  He started because the Dodgers were facing a lefty.  Of course, Mattingly’s platooning Turner and Dee Gordon (3-for-4, 2 runs, 1 RBI in 2nd game) because Mattingly’s from Indiana.  When people ask him, is there anywhere cool in Indiana?  He says, “Not really, just Indy.”  When people ask me who’s playing 2nd base for the Dodgers and what’s the least lame part of Indiana, I say the same thing.

Yasiel Puig – 0-for-5, 3 Ks in the first game.  Drop him!  3-for-5, 1 run, 2 RBIs in the 2nd game.  Pick him back up!  Mattingly says after Puig strikes out he blames it on a different injury every time, saying, “Shoulder yesterday, back today, so I’m not sure if they’re going to get him tests or get him to the MRI Monday or a bone scan on Tuesday, maybe.  I’m not quite sure what we’ll do.  We may not do anything.  I’m not sure.”  One thing Mattingly clears up every time he talks, he doesn’t know.

Scott Van Slyke – 2-for-3, 2 RBIs as he homered in the first game.  If you picked him up for the opening series, how very sly…ke!

Clayton Kershaw – 6 2/3 IP, 1 ER, 6 baserunners, 7 Ks.  He’s a right-o bastard ace!  Bloody oath!  Sorry, practicing my crikey.

Hyun-Jin Ryu – 5 IP, 0 ER, 3 baserunners, 5 Ks.  The jet lag didn’t bother him because he’s used to commuting from the far east to Dodger Stadium.  What?  He lives in San Gabriel Valley.

Wade Miley – 5 IP, 3 ER, 5 baserunners, 8 Ks.  I wouldn’t expect this many Ks from him stateside because in the southern hemisphere, his curve breaks down.

Trevor Cahill – 4 IP, 5 ER.  The Diamondbacks sure could use Trevor Bauer…or Tyler Skaggs…or Max Scherzer.

Mark Trumbo – 2-for-5, 3 RBIs and his 1st homer.  The cheer from the Australian fans on the homer was priceless.  A mix of ooh’s, aah’s and ‘Why isn’t he wearing a sweater and pants like our other cricket players?’

Cody Ross – Will begin the year on the DL, but should be able to return early to mid-April.  When he returns, Pollock, Parra and him will form a three way platoon for two outfield spots.  Or as Kevin Towers calls it:  Ross, Outfield for Less.

Addison Reed – Kirk Gibson named Reed the closer, which seemed like a foregone conclusion.  To go with anyone else, Gibson would’ve had to be a Putz.

Jurickson Profar – The Jurickson store is closed for 3 months with a torn shoulder muscle.  I removed him from my top 20 2nd basemen and shortstops.  I’d *pinkie to mouth* Profar to not draft him in any league now.

Geovany Soto – Going for a precautionary MRI on his knee.  A precautionary MRI on a catcher’s knee is like giving someone a bucket on the Titanic.  J.P. Arencibia and Robinson Chirinos could be in for increased at-bats.  Chirinos has been hitting well in the spring, but Josh Satin was the league’s best hitter last spring, so there’s that.

Elvis Andrus – Won’t return for a few days, but should be fine for (real) Opening Day.  On the no foolsies tip, even if he misses the first week of the season, I’m not too worried.

Tanner Scheppers – Will be a starter this year.  I’m starting to see a pattern.  Move Ogando into the bullpen then rotation then bullpen then rotation.  Do the same with Neftali.  But then you run out of arms to ruin and what can you do?  Ruin a new arm!  The Rangers never saw a young (is Scheppers young?) arm they couldn’t screw up by shuffling from the bullpen to the rotation and back again.  If Mariano Rivera was in Texas all those years, he would’ve been made a starter at least five times.  I’ve adjusted Scheppers in my top 400 and added him to my top 80 starters.  I debated putting him in an unfavorable tier, because he had an under-7 K-rate in relief, so that could fall even lower and be useless in most mixed leagues, but I decided his unknown is worth a late flyer.

Joakim Soria – Will be the Rangers closer.  He shoots up my rankings and I think he could be one of those dark horse candidates to be a top three closer.  Think Holland last year.  Huh?  Think Greg HollandOh, yeah!  My other candidate for sleeper $12 Salad is Nate Jones.  If you own Feliz, you can’t be, um, feliz.  He’s droppable in most leagues.

Yu Darvish – Scratched from Friday’s start due to a stiff neck he got from sleeping.  Hehe, Yu woke with a stiffy.

Chad Qualls – The Astros decided their bullpen wasn’t not interesting enough, so they’re going with a closer by committee.  I’d go with them in order Chad Qualls, Josh Fields, Jesse Crain, The Guy Who’s Eating Fruit Roll Ups In The Supermarket Line In Front Of You and Matt Albers.  It’s a total closerfudge.

Kolten Wong – I had a sleeper post written for him, and in that post I was like, “This guy’s a young Pedroia… Blah blah blah… He can hit 15 homers and steal 20 bases… Blah blah blah… A solid average… Blah blah blah…”  But then I realized I couldn’t publish something that has blah blah blah as every other statement.  Also, Mark Ellis was signed by the Cards and I was worried he would steal time from Wong.  The Cards said this weekend, Wong is their starter and Ellis is nothing but a backup.  And my Wong went up!  Um, in my rankings.

Carlos Martinez – Will set up Rosenthal with Joe Kelly slotted into the 5th rotation slot.  Joe Kelly has a 6.28 ERA this spring.  Spring stats mean nothing, except when it’s the player’s talent level.  The Cards wanted any reason to put Martinez in middle relief and, when he gave them no reason, they still did it.

Matt Moore – Knocked down by a liner to the melon, but he deflected it enough with his glove to avoid serious injury.  He has no concussion symptoms and afterwards said, “We’re very lucky today.”  Was he a ‘we’ before getting hit in the head, because if not, may want to check him again.

Jacob Turner – The Marlins are shopping him because they have pitching depth.  Honestly, I didn’t think they had depth anywhere.  News to Grey.

Derek Dietrich – Took a grounder to his face and had to be helped off the field.  This is what happens when Little League coaches teach you to watch the ball into the glove.

Mike Minor – Will start the year on the 15-day DL.  It seems his urethra issue has made its way into his shoulder.  His shirts’ armpit stains must be real yellow.  I’ve updated his projections and rankings in the top 40 starters.

Brandon Beachy – Will undergo his 2nd Tommy John surgery today.  Might be easier if Dr. James Andrews just opens an office in the Braves bullpen.

Jose Iglesias – Will miss the entire 2014 season due to his shins.  When something like that is kiboshing his season, dashing any hopes for this year, it must be crushing.  Not to mention, those gerunds have shin in them, which is just salt in the wounds.

Andrew Romine – Traded to the Tigers.  I sure would’ve liked to see the Tigers replace the defensive-minded Iglesias with an offensive-minded shortstop.  The Tigers obviously don’t consult me.  I added him to the top 20 shortstops.

Bruce Rondon – Will have Tommy John surgery.  Do you see how damaging peer pressure can be?

Manny Machado – Not ready to play in games due to his knee.  That never stopped Mickey Mantle.  Have a whiskey and get out there!

Cole Hamels – Threw a successful simulated game.  Pretty impressive he could get through his motions with that giant virtual reality helmet on.

Jacoby Ellsbury – MRI on his calf came back negative, which is actually a positive.  Weird!  I’m sure if Ellsbury tries real hard during the year he can get a positive MRI that is negative.

Aaron Hicks – Gardy said Hicks, the guy who hit .192 in 281 ABs last year, is going to be the center fielder.  What better way to start off an offense that’s not out of the woods than by having a guy named Hicks leading off?

Kyle Gibson – Named Twins 5th starter.  Last year, Gibson had a 5.12 K/9 and 3.53 BB/9 in 51 IP.  Yeah, that’s hideous.  The Twins are trying to give their guys some major league experience.  It’s noble of them, but it would be more noble if they put down the seat so we didn’t have to look at it.

Michael Bourn – Ran on an anti-gravity treadmill.  Everyone else is at spring training and this guy is at Space Camp?

Josh Johnson – This is gonna astound you.  Astound, I say.  Josh Johnson is injured.  He’s gonna miss around a month with a strained flexor.  His porn star brother, Gosh Johnson, once strained to flex her, but that’s probably just a coincidence.  I’ve moved him into my top 80 starters.

Nolan Arenado – Struck on the hand by a pitch, but it’s merely a flesh wound.

Mat Latos – He’s got knee problems and a pitch ain’t one.  Huh?  Oh, Jay-Z.  Damn, Grey, you so ghetto, you spell ghetto ‘getto.’  And talk in 3rd person like a mothereffer!  Latos will start the year on the DL, and, honestly, I’m starting to not like how it sounds.  I’ve dropped Latos in my top 40 starters and top 400.  I’d still draft him, but it would be about 40 picks later now.

Devin Mesoraco – Shut down for a few days with an oblique injury.  The doctor actually said, “Well, um, er, uh…” and everyone just assumed oblique.

Aroldis Chapman – Out 6-8 weeks due to surgery to repair fractures around his nose.  Jon Niese has a great doctor for that!  Maybe Aroldis can come back wearing Lebron’s face mask, or the Phantom of the Opera one.  Maybe those are the same, I don’t know the answer.  I’ve moved Aroldis down in my top 400 and have added Jonathon Broxton and J.J. HooverSean Marshall could also sneak into the picture, but he needs to get healthy first, so I’m in no rush to add him.  I’m guessing Hoover will suck up the majority of saves (vacuum pun!), and Broxton will gobble up a few (he’s fat), but won’t gobble up any until he’s healthy; Broxton’s starting the year on the DL.  For all intents and porpoises, Hoover’s the closer for now.

Johnny Cueto – Scratched from his start with a scapula issue.  Cueto with injury concerns?  No way!  Say it ain’t true!  He says it’s a minor issue.  Mmm-hmm.  Riiiiiiiiiight.  Yes, ten I’s.

Jose Reyes – Left Saturday’s game with a tight hamstring.  He doesn’t think it will be a major issue.  Yeah, what does he need his legs for anyway?

Jake Odorizzi – Named the Rays 5th starter.  Before February Grey went off to Acapulco, he had ranked Odorizzi already.

Carlos Gomez – Brewers announced Gomez would be the leadoff hitter.  There’s maybe ten players all year who actually stay in the same lineup spot from spring training until October.  Gomez won’t be one of them.  He will shuffle between a few spots and I wouldn’t put too much credence into this, especially for fear of a lawsuit with Saul Zaentz.

Hisashi Iwakuma – Threw 45 tosses with a tennis ball on Friday.  I think that was a game I used to play with my Puerto Rican friends in high school.  Did he throw the tennis balls off a bunch of freshmen’s heads?  Then it definitely was.

Starlin Castro – Him and his droopy, Forest Whitaker eye will be ready for Opening Day.  Good news.  Yay.  Now what about Javier Baez?!  Oh, he got reassigned to the minor league camp.  Sad trombone.

Brendan Ryan – Won’t be ready for Opening Day.  Ryan hurt himself backing up Jeter during infield drills.

Jarred Cosart – Named the Astros number two starter.  Rarely does a player page make me giggle, but click his name and look at his player page.  Now, look at his walk and K rates.  Hehe.  If you own Jarred, you will be scarred.

Brett Oberholtzer – Named the Astros number three starter.  Can the Astros just not order their starters?  It’s embarrassing to numbers everywhere.

J.D. Martinez – Released by the Astros.  “J.D., you have a call on your cell.  It’s Brett Wallace, he’s in Japan and says the Yakult Swallows would be happy to have you!”

Jeff Francoeur – Released by the Indians.  Frenchy will try to catch on somewhere else.  Or as a wind power generator.

Skip Schumaker – Will miss a month of games with a dislocated shoulder.  If only there was a Find my iPhone app for shoulders.

Jose Abreu – Taking a few days off to rest his ankles.  In Cuba, no one is allowed ankles, so he’s just trying to get comfortable.

Darin Ruf – Out for 6 weeks with a strained oblique.  Ryne Sandberg said, “It’s unfortunate.  We all wanted that to happen to Rollins.”

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez – Received a cortisone shot in his shoulder.  Cuban baseball raftees come in all shapes and sizes, and the Phillies got the one that isn’t good.

Freddy Galvis – Will start the year on the DL.  When he heard the news, Sandberg walked by Rollins and simply said, “You did this.”

John Mayberry – Placed on the trading block because he was seen talking to Rollins.

Eric Young – Looking like he will be the 4th outfielder behind Juan Lagares and Krispie Young.  Poor EY, just watching KY glide right in front of him.

Ryan Goins – Seemed to be named the Blue Jays starter at 2nd base, but the Blue Jays manager, John Gibbons, refuted that report, saying he hadn’t named anyone yet.  And that wraps up another segment of today’s comings and Goins!

Is it worth it if I already have Pujols at 1b and Rios in my utility? Beltran and Rizzo are my bench.

I dropped Josh Johnson for Martin Perez already. Couldn’t afford to wait until Yahoo made him DL-eligible. The elbow flexor injury is usually precursor to TJ. Do I trade the beloved man crush yordano ventura for glen perkins? I only have two closers and Ventura is my no 7 starter but I am hesitant to move him before the season starts… There’s been a lot of hype about him. I see in the rankings you have him projected for 145 IP but Ned Yost stated he would pitching 180-200. Given the increased innings where does Ventura fall in your rankings?

@Nick the Podcast Host: 10 team league mind you, gio, bailey, cobb, moore, gray, samardzja in front of him. Yeah just curious where Ventura would fall in the rankings now that’s he’s scheduled for 180 + innings.

          (link)

@Fried Fish Fan: Hey Fish! I think if you look at Grey’s projections and forecast them to 180-200 innings, you’re probably looking at 12-15 Wins, a high 3′s ERA, WHIP around 1.35, and 8 K/9. Steamer isn’t far off, but Grey see’s a better ERA in his future. I’ll be honest, he might be a poor man’s Matt Moore, and you might be able to get a bigger return doing a 2-for-2 with Moore and Perkins being the primary guys if you really need a third closer (but do you?).

2 good pieces of news in this blurb for my 30 man deep dynasty league, romine will hopefully now be the 2nd MI who is both a starter and unowned. will be attempting to waiver him come end up week 1 when our waivers open. damn early morning, forgot the other good thing. is 7 people enough for an NL or AL only league if we draft 27 each (189 gone from player pool)? Jackass comish moved draft last week twice to play basketball, resulting in 2-3 people quitting league entirely, even though this is everyone’s biggest money league among leaguemates. We currently have 7 with draft next sunday, and will likely have to change to roto (which i’m fine with)

Looking for opinions on one of my opponents teams. This is my week one match up in a 12 team 5×5 H2H 250pro league. I’ve never seen this strategy before:

His pitching: (7innings min per week)

    Kenley Jenson
    Trevor Rosenthal
    Glen Perkins
    David Robertson
    Sergio Romo

and that’s it. No starters and a bunch on blank spots. He has 8 bench bats. Just for laughs, here’s the lineup he focused on like a laser beam:

    C Rosario
    1st David Ortiz
    2nd Daniel Murphy
    3rd Machado
    SS Tulo
    OF Braun
    OF Jay Bruce
    OF Allen Craig
    UTI Matt Adams
    UTI Eric Young

On the bench: Arenado, Dee Gordon, Teixeira, Rajai Davis, Jonny Peralta, AJ Pierzynski, Moustakas, Colby Rasmus.

So is this guy just and idiot or is there something here that I don’t see? Pretty sure his strategy is crap. Also, how could not end up with better bats if you punted ALL starting pitching!?!?! How do you spend $250 on a buy in and draft that team!?!

    • Joe says:
      (link)

@Shawn of the livid: His strategy is legit. I’ve won head to head leagues by using only relievers and dominating era, whip, and saves. Presumably, you are then left with an elite offense that religiously gets 4 or 5 categories per week. However, his offense does not live up to the check his pitching cashed. It is probably a top 3 or 4 offense in your league, but I can’t look at that offense as say it is dominant. You need to have a dominant offense for this strategy to work.

Right now on a weekly basis, he loses wins and strikeouts every week, plus he will have a large number of weeks where he struggles with AVG and SB. Leaves him very little room for error.

      • Joe says:
        (link)

@Joe: I would add, that if this is a daily roster change league, he can stream pitchers. if he does that effectively, it is a different story. but i assumed this was a weekly league based on how you wrote your post.

      • Shawn of the livid says:
        (link)

@Joe: That’s what I thought too, I see what he’s trying to do, but don’t see how that works with that lineup. My offense is much better than his and obviously my pitching is better too.

Its a daily league, so I’m sure he will stream heavily. But, its also a damn pro league. Everyone streams here and there and people are pretty well informed. You cannot rely on even picking up the pitcher with the weeks best matchup. I will grab the best streamer option and bench him just so this guy can’t use him.

That’s cool that this unusual strategy worked for you in the past, but I just don’t see how someone could try it in a league like this. Not to mention if you have a couple blown saves from those guys your numbers are shot for he whole week.

To each his own I guess, but that seems like a very un-fun and ineffective way to play through a season. I will be paying attention to his matchups, should be interesting

@DonSlaughtOnslaught: wow. Maybe it was Vmarts mom?

On second thought, you’re right, there are some dopes in those leagues. The start of the draft was especially stupid, I had 7th pick (took Harper) but the first pick took Kershaw so I should have known right then that this was going to be a weird league

Ready for the bashing…this is team I drafted in 14 team weekly H2H categories/daily lineup league. 4 starts minimum per week/7 starts max per week (OBP, R, RBI, Total Bases, SB, Quality Starts, K, ERA, WHIP, SV)-

    260 Budget-

C Mauer $32-You sensibly talked me out of drafting him for my way bigger $$$ NFBC league, but I wanna see how hometown boy does as full-time 1B plus my plans for this league were sort of foiled when Votto went $50 and Gyrko went $14
    1B Rizzo $13
    2B Matt Carpenter $28
    3B Boegarts $6
SS Peralta $1 (I threw shit when someone sniped Villar for $2, then I calmed down and said fine I’ll take the “power=hitter” coming off PED suspension with no speed)
OF Billy Hamilton $26 (I was gonna overpay since this league more for fun, but I accidentally slammed 2 instead of 1, I wasn’t going over $16, but meh you only need 4-6 SB most weeks to win this category)
    OF Jay Bruce $28
    OF Joey Bats $23
    UT Wil Myers $22
    UT Dustin Ackley $1

    Bench batters-

SS Dee Gordon $1 (could do what Villar does if he pans out for once)
1B/OF Garret Jones $1 (only drafted cuz’ of daily format and best slugger type left with dual eligibility)
    SS/2B Jordy Mercer $1 (mistake)

    Pitchers-

    SP Strasburg $33
    SP Sale $34
SP Ubaldo $1 (did not want, but fine for a buck I guess. On very short leash.)
    SP Kluber $1 (did want)
    SP Martin Perez $1
    SP Felix Doubrount $1
    SP Brandon Morrow $1
SP Charlie Morton $1 (my last pick, usually don’t draft sinker/low K types but I went gut feeling, his teammates call him Doc. Jr.)
RP Tommy Hunter $1 (have to start 2)
RP Hustoon Street $1 (got stuck with him, autobidder didn’t comply)
RP/SP Alexi Ogando $1 (going in SP slot)
RP/SP Wade Davis $1 (going in SP slot)

Definitely dropping Jordy Mercer for a catcher, would you go Ruiz, Russell Martin, or D’Arnaud?

Would you drop either Martin Perez or Doubrount for Garret Richards, Erasmo Ramirez, Jacob Turner, or Cosart?

Drop Garret Jones for Willingham since Mauer getting that 1B soon and picking up another catcher?

        @Grey:

Thanks! So you’d probably start Willingham over Ackley as a default in 2nd utility spot for added power? Keep Peralta starting and only use Dee Gordon or SAGNOF type I may pick up if trailing in steals going into a weekend? I hope to get by this year with Stras/Sale and hopefully no fail and find a reliable #3 and be able to have 4 relievers going in starter spots and hopefully Ogando becoming a closer. I don’t think Carpenter repeats 55 2B but do you think he can end up with comparable total bases to Gyrko/Kinsler/pro-rated Utley stats?

The following article appeared in today’s “The Detroit Bugle and Gazetteer”

Headline: Ian Kinsler Found Passed Out and Pantless

Police were called to an undisclosed five star hotel room in Lakeland, Florida early Monday where major league baseball player Ian Kinsler was found unresponsive and devoid of pants by hotel staff. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he is recovering. Kinsler is reported to be awake and alert and “happy as f*ck”, according to a hospital spokesperson.

The maid who found Kinsler told medical staff that the Detroit Tigers slugger was unresponsive and nude from the waist down amidst a throng of empty beer and mini-liquor “nips” bottles. Little blue pills and tissues also littered the room.

“Oh, he was erect,” said Shakeisha Johns, a hotel guest who saw Kinsler being wheeled away. According to eyewitness accounts, Kinsler had DVR’d a portion of a recent ESPN broadcast detailing an injury to Texas Rangers phenom Jurickson Profar. The thirty second ESPN report was running in REPEAT mode on Kinsler’s hotel room television.

MLB officials could not be reached for comment.

  38. Grey good morning dude – I am in a dynasty league – keep all – Jurickson Profar – someone wants to trade him to me – do you like him long term and what are the max numbers you see for his future

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

@Mr Baseball: What’s up, man? Long time… What are they offering for him?

  39. By the way Grey I own Brad Miller – any chance Miller could put up numbers like Profar in the future – I am winning all pre-season fantasy leagues because of the numbers Miller been putting up – To get Profar he wants Sunny Side Gray and Brad miller and he is willing to send Belt packing also – so Profar and Belt for Grey and Miller – if the trade is even I wantno part of it – if I get the better of the trade then its a done deal man

    • Principal Blackman says:

@Mr Baseball: It’s not an even trade, and you still want no part of it.

I tried to avoid doing this because I know it annoys you guys but the wizards in my new 10 player keeper H2H pts league moved the draft time so I autodrafted & it appears as though it broke Grey’s rule of too many bench bats so I wanted to see what you suggest given the waivers are deep all around even though it’s 12 teams:

    C: Rosario
    1B: Pujols
    2B: Kinsler
    3B: Donaldson
    SS: Segura
    OF: Rios, Myers, Marte
    Utilities: Freeman, Hosmer
Bench: A. Gordon, Napoli, Moss, Asche, Middlebrooks, B. Miller
    SP: Anibal, Cobb
    RP: Smyly, Street
    P: Teheran, Liriano, Masterson, Gray
    Bench P: Porcello

Waiver options (SP’s): Dickey, Wheeler, Ventura, Kazmir, Tillman, T. Walker, T. Ross, Gallardo
Waivers (RP’s): Axford, Nate Jones, Carlos Martinez, Qualls, Melancon
Waivers (hitters): Eaton, Revere, Brantley, Ramos, Villar, Yelich, Fowler, K. Davis, Gattis, C. Carter, Venable, Hart, Springer, A. Escobar, D. Gordon, Rajai

Thanks as always guys. Promise this is the first and last time I post my team unless prompted :)

Hey there Greystar – had the big draft night this weekend, primed with your rankings, strategeries, and a list of espn discounts, I was able to pretty much have my way with the thing and I got every target I had charted for picks 1-10 except Altuve, and was able to get Gyorko instead. Got most of the pitchers I had listed except Gray who went surprisingly early for this crowd who didn’t seem to scroll past the first page of the rankings:

    C Pierzynski 22 / 254
    1b Votto 2 / 14
    2b Gyorko 8 / 86
    3b Arenado 18 / 206 ; Middlebrooks 16 / 182
    SS Segura 5 / 59
    OF A. Jones 1 / 11
    OF Bautista 3 / 35
    OF Bruce 4 / 38
    UT Jose Abreu 10 / 110
    UT Coco Crisp 14 / 158
    SP:
    Bailey 6 / 62
    Cobb 7 / 83
    Teheran 9 / 107
    Cashner 11 / 131
    Salazar 12 / 134
    Masterson 15 / 179
    Kluber 19 / 227
    Ventura 20 / 230
    Johnson 23 / 275
    Jimenez 24 / 278
    Taijuan Walker 25 / 299
    RP:
    Balfour 13 / 155
    Henderson 17 / 203
    Soria 21 / 251

I’m pretty happy in the end. I got the news about Soria but not Johnson, so my DL will start out full with Johnson and Walker, giving me the opportunity to grab a couple more waiver guys. I am a little short on speed – the sub of Gyorko instead of Altuve leaves me stout on power but a little short on speed.

I’m looking at adding Wong, Bourjos, or Alcides Escobar. Which do you think complements this team best? I’ll probably leave the other spot for streaming hitters/pitchers/weekly h2h needs. Any other overall thoughts on the draft? Thanks!

I need to cut my roster down before Sunday, in a 16 team H2H category re-draft league. I need to cut two people. We use OBP, HR, Doubles+triples, SBs, runs for hitters and walks, FIP, Sv+holds, Quality starts and strikeouts for pitchers.

My hitter options are cutting Frazier (own Beltre), Aybar (own Segura), or Kelly Johnson (he’ll have 2b, 3b, and OF eligibility)

Pitchers, I have a few more options. Full rotation is Bailey, Ryu, T Ross, Porcello, Fister, Stults, Ogando, Miguel Gonzalez (PHI, can be put in minors if he gets put there), Joe Kelly and B Kintzler, backing up Melancon, Brothers, Tazawa, Farquhar and Darren O’Day.

    (link)

Morning Grey.. I’m in a 10 teamer and I have 3 bench guys on my batting and I read that you hardly liked 1 bench spot in shallow leagues. My bench guys are Reddick, Leonys Martin and Brandon Moss then Utility is Cuddyer n Desmond Jennings. 1- I’m dropping 2 guys. Reddick for Erasmo and I’m gonna drop 1 more or 2 if you think so. Which other guys should I drop for pitching?? I only have 1 closer so I wanted to pickup joakim Soria.

      • Frank White says:
        (link)

K so you like Soria for Moss.. I have a feeling someone might grab Erasmo so I’m just gonna use my waiver for both of them so it’s more of a def. Unless you think just use it on Erasmo and grab Soria as a FA. What do you think? It’s a 10 team so there’s a lot on the wire. Do you have any pitchers in mind that were far down on the rankings that you pulled up recently?? Thanks!!

        • Cram It says:
          (link)

@Frank White: He said drop Moss for Soria! You don’t want Erasmo in a 10 teamer yet. Closer is more important than some end of the bench starter.

  63. Dingbat says:

I already got Sky’s opinion over the weekend, but I’m looking for more feedback. I finally had my auction draft Friday night, and it was a bit of a wild and crazy ride. It’s a 10-team Yahoo league with 7×7 (H, OPS, K/BB, QS). Here’s the team I ended up with:

    C: Wilin Rosario ($4)
    1B: Eric Hosmer ($14)
    2B: Robinson Cano ($30)
    3B: Edwin Encarnacion ($33)
    SS: Brad Miller ($3)
    OF: Bryce Harper ($36)
    OF: Shin-Soo Choo ($18)
    OF: Jason Heyward ($16)
    Util: Starling Marte ($18)
    Util: Brian McCann ($4)
BN: Will Venable ($1), Adam Eaton ($1)

    SP: Madison Bumgarner ($28)
    SP: Doug Fister ($8)
    SP: Danny Salazar ($8)
    SP: Hyun-jin Ryu ($6)
    RP: Craig Kimbrel ($20)
    RP: Addison Reed ($5)
    RP: Jose Veras ($1)
    RP: LaTroy Hawkins ($1)
BN: Ian Kennedy ($1), Lance Lynn ($1), CC Sabathia ($1), Rick Porcello ($1), Joaquin Benoit ($1)

My biggest mistakes were paying more for Harper than I think he’s worth, and grabbing two catchers. I grabbed McCann at a good value when I thought there was going to be a bidding war for Rosario, and when that didn’t materialize, I had to grab the guy I’m expecting to be the best catcher in the league. That left me short-stacked earlier than I would’ve liked, but I think I managed to address all of the areas of need for my team. I think my biggest weakness is my starting rotation, but I’m really confident in my top 4, and I think the other 4 SPs I snagged all have a good chance to return solid value as well.

Fortunately, I’ve been able to trade McCann for Rizzo, so that should address my needs for HRs/RBIs.

Any thoughts? Also, Tillman and Pineda are available. Is it worth dropping anyone on my team for either of them?

    Thanks!

    With this rotation in H2H:

SP – Scherzer, Bailey, Teheran, Salazar, Fister, Porcello, Ventura, Archer, Wood
RP – Soriano, Rodney, N.Jones, Veras
    DL – Minor

Stats: W, QS, SV, KS, KS/9, ERA, WHIP

Would you pick up any of these RPs (we can play up to 6 at a time): Hawkins, Hunter, Feliz, Qualls, Hoover?

  66. Hi Grey — Good morning. This is my first question of 2014, though I leaned heavily on you guys for pre-draft preparation.

Anyway, Grey, anyone else … here’s my roster in a 14-team mixed root league with a 1300-inning limit:

    C Wieters
    1B Rizzo
    2B Kinsler
    3B Longoria, Moustakas
    SS Elvis
    2B/3B Anthony Rendon
OF McCuthcen, Bautista, Aoki, Leonys Martin, Grady Sizemore

SP Cobb, Teheran, Smyly, Danny Salazar, Liriano, Fister, John Johnson
RP Axford, JJ Hoover, Sergio Santos

I want to drop John Johnson. Is there anyone else not worth keeping around?

My question: with a 1300-inning limit, is six SPs enough? Or should I replace Johnson with Dillon Gee, Drew Hutchenson, Erasmo Ramirez, Tyler Skaggs, or Dan Straily? Or should I pick up an extra bat? I could use depth at 1B (FA options: Loney, Nava, J Turner, Ike Davis) or SS (options AEscobar, ZCozart, or Turner again). Otherwise, the top-ranked hitters from your Top 400 list still available (not counting those I already named) are Cody Asche, Bourjos, Lorenzo Cain, and Marion Byrd,

What’s the best move to replace Johnson and/or anyone else who may be worth dropping?

    Many thanks!

Dropping Josh Johnson in a 14-team mixed league with a 1300-inning limit where the rest of my staff is Cobb, Tehran, Smyly, Salazar, Liriano, Fister … I could either pick up Dillon Gee, Drew Hutchenson, Erasmo Ramirez, Tyler Skaggs, or Dan Straily or make due with six starters (is that enough for a 1300-inning league?) and use that spot for a backup bat: the highest-ranked hitters from your Top 400 list still available are Cody Asche, Bourjos, Acildes Escobar, Lorenzo Cain, and Marion Byrd.

Sup Grey, thanks for all the good reads already this year.

Quick question for my 12 team yahoo H2H.

My lineup is pretty ridiculous (trout, longo, bautista, bruce, choo, rizzo, )

I currently have no bench bats, which I know you are not a fan of.

Chris Johnson is on waivers and a few other decent guys like Hart or Fowler or Reddick.

My Pitching is pretty good with Gio, Homer, Teheran, Cobb, Gray, Masterson

The bottom rung of my roster is comprised of Melancon (saves only league) Gee and Smyly.

Would you cut one of those three pitchers for any of those FA bats? Or just stream the Gee spot (that sounded awkward)

Grey, I flippin love you. And ESPNs bad rankings. And my foolish leaguemates/sheep. I had my auction draft in my keeper league last night, and thanks to getting Goldy and a few others cheap last year, I put together an awesome roster. I am pumped. OBP League

C: Santana (did not plan to spend on Catcher but he went for WAY too cheap)
    1B: I love Goooooold
    2B: Kipnis
    3B: Longoria
    SS: Segura
    OF: Harper
    OF: McCutchen
    OF: Puig
    UTIL: Fielder
Bench: Abreu and Arenado (cheap flyers as possible great keepers for next year or trade bait; Arenado as injury insurance for Longo)

    SP: Strasburg
    SP: Cobb
    SP: Liriano
    SP: Cingrani
    SP: Gray
    RP: Soria
    RP: Balfour
    RP: N Jones

@Warren: Holy hell, how small is your league? Good for you though. I think you’ve got the championship locked up…unless someone else has somehow managed to get Trout, Goldschmidt and Hanley on their team.

How were you able to get McCutchen, Harper, and Strasburg? All three are very well known players all going within the first two rounds of most leagues.

Which side wins in this trade:
Team 1 gets: J-Bats, Ortiz, Andrus & Cingrani
Team 2 gets: Trout, Desmond, Asivail Garcia, Jose Fernandez

    • Principal Blackman says:
      (link)

@Mitch: Trout is the best player of the bunch. Fernandez blows Cingrani out of the water. Desmond and Andrus are pretty close, but if you go by Grey’s rankings Desmond is ahead of Andrus. Ortiz is obviously better than Garcia, but if you are in an ESPN league he is limited to UTIL. This isn’t a contest. Team 2 is getting away with highway robbery.

      • Mitch says:
        (link)

@Principal Blackman: ? Ya think? It is a Yahoo league so Ortiz is eligible 1B. I’m actually Team 1 (trying to get the Team 2 guys). He declined, so I’m thinking of re-offering it without Desmond/Andrus.

        • Principal Blackman says:
          (link)

@Mitch: I’m still not touching that offer if I’m the Trout owner.

        • DonSlaughtOnslaught says:
          (link)

@Mitch: Is that guy starting Avisail Garcia? Would you consider the upgrade from Garcia to Ortiz enough to give up the best player in fantasy and a possible top five starter? Can’t speak for your league, but I would probably be annoyed by that offer.

          • Mitch says:
            (link)

@DonSlaughtOnslaught: Ortiz is a perrenial 30/100/.300 hitter. Assuming he stays healthy, that’s Trout minus the steals. Maybe I’m much higher on him and Joey Bats (who’s also another 30/100/.265) than everyone else though. I wouldn’t do Bautista/Ortiz for Trout without the upgrade in pitching in return. I don’t overpay for 1 player, no matter how good he is. The guy drafted him for $73 which is why his offense is so weak behind him.

            • DonSlaughtOnslaught says:
              (link)

@Mitch: am I misreading that trade? Tony acing tank is NOT an upgrade on Jose Fernandez. Other guy is getting worse at two spots to get David Ortiz.

                  (link)

@DonSlaughtOnslaught: would you trade both David Ortiz and Joey Bautista to get Trout? I wouldn’t. I would only do it if I gained somewhere else, which is why I would give Cingrani for the upgrade to get J-Fer. You still think this is unreasonable?

                  • Montezuma's Revenge... right now says:
                    (link)

Hey Grey. Thank you again for your advice. It’s my 6th year doing fantasy, 3rd following this site. You lead me to 3 championships last year. I had planned on not doing fantasy this season because of time restraints, but just when I got out…

This is probably the only question I’ll ask all season… how’s my team?

Yahoo! 12 Team league, 4th pick.

R, HR, RBI, SB, TB, OBP
K, ERA, WHIP, K/9, QS, Saves + Holds

I’m light on speed but not too concerned with it. I could probably drop Frazier for another 8th inning guy, but I thought the potential value was too good with my last pick.

Since we have the Saves + Holds I really punted closers, but got greedy and missed out on my late targeted Melancon and Clippard. I’m not going to actually punt the category, but seeing as Scheppers is supposed to be a starter now, I’ve got 2 guys for the category and I’ll probably have to find a better balance (and which starters to cut) but I’m not too upset because few seemed to notice the new scoring and continued to draft top closers like normal, while I can pick up skilled middle relievers for free.

    Hello Grey,
Great points about this silly “Down Under” exercise. Absolutely Ridiculous! It also mean I face Kershaw 3 times in my H2H League for the first “week.”

Anyway, I wanted to know who you would rather have at 2B – Kendrick or Wong. I had Miller, but I dicked around by dropping him early on to add Baez thinking no one would need a 2B and got burned by one of the other Managers. He’s the vulture type. I have Kendrick now, but could drop him for Wong.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  88. malamoney says:

In a H2H league that pitcher heavy on scoring. Here is our scoring system:

    +10 win, -5 loss, +10 save, -5 blown save, +3 ip, +1 K, -1 walk, -1 hit, -1 er, +5 cg, +10 so

Pitchers can really rack up some points. Especially in two-start weeks.

My keepers: Braun, King Felix, Tulo, Longoria and Goldschmidt

I have the 2nd and 5th picks of the first round. I also have the 6th and 9th picks of the 2nd round. I actually have 2 first round, second round and third round picks.

Considering I only have King Felix and nearly all of your top 20 starters have been kept, I am thinking it would be in my team’s best interest to grab starters with my two first round picks.

Based on your rankings here are the top 5 starters available:

    Anibal Sanchez
    Alex Cobb
    Homer Bailey
    Zach Grienke
    Matt Moore

Based on the Streamer’s projections and our scoring system:

    James Shields (534 pts)
    Mat Latos (511)
    Jeff Samardzija (511)
    Hyun-Jin Ryu (506)
    Zach Greinke (490)

Based on fantasy points per game start:

    Cole Hamels (17.78)
    Anibal Sanchez (17.36)
    James Shields (17.23)
    Alex Cobb (17.18)
    Hisashi Iwakuma (17.13)
    Randall Delgado (17.11)
    Danny Salazar (16.89)
    Zach Greinke (16.88)

Here are some other pitchers available that did not make any of the above lists:

Tanaka, Cain, Miller, Minor, Cole, Cingrani, Lester and Liriano

Which two would you grab if they were available with my 2nd and 5th picks?

I am thinking Greinke and Shields based on ADP (CBS). I don’t expect either of them to get past our first round. With 5 keepers, the first round is really the 6th round. I expect Cain will be gone the first round too. I am hoping that Tanaka, Sanchez or Miller will be available at one of my second round picks. And Cole for my third rounders.

And just to throw this out there. Here are the high profile bats that are available and I expect to be drafted by the time my 2nd round picks come around:

Bautista, Jones, Stanton, Wright, Holliday, Kipnis and Posey

Are any of those names, players you wouldn’t be able to pass up? I just think that my team needs some reliable SP1. Originally I thought I’d take a bat and pitcher in each of the first 3 rounds. But the voice inside my head is telling me to grab the best to starters in the first round. It won’t give up. It wants me dead. Goddamn this voice inside my head…

    Help me Obi-Grey. You’re my only hope…

I am joining a 12 team keeper league roto 5X5 that uses OBP instead of AVG, and I’m taking over someone’s team that bailed out. I am not allowed to keep any players to start this season but they give me the 1st pick. We use weekly lineup changes and start the following positions. C, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, SS, 5 OF, 2 UTL, 9 P, and we carry 6 bench. Everyone gets to keep 2 batters and 2 pitchers, but I have to start from scratch. I’m going to list some players that are available for my first pick, and will be one of my keepers moving forward. Can you tell me who I should take with my 1st pick? Just remember we use OBP not AVG. Chris Davis, Adam Jones, Edwin Encarnacion, Evan Longoria, Jay Bruce, Hanley Ramirez, and Jean Segura. One owner hasn’t decided between Jones and Encarnacion, so one of them won’t be available for me to take. I would imagine he’s keeping Jones and dumping Encarnacion. Note, there are no good starting pitchers worth taken with my 1st pick. Also, since I’m starting from scratch with no keepers, what would be your strategy in the draft? Thanks guys!

    Hi Grey! (12 team mixed)
Just had our draft last night and I am excited for another season of fantasy baseball. Thanks to you I have one of the best pitching staffs in our league all at the expense of C, SS and 3b.

    C: Travis d’Arnaud
SP: Julio Teheran, Matt Moore, Sonny Gray, Justin Masterson, Danny Salazar, Tony Cingrani, Corey Kluber, Erasmo Ramirez
RP: David Robertson, Joakim Soria, John Axford, LaTroy Hawkins

    A couple of questions.

    0) Thoughts on my pitching staff?
1.a) Which pitchers are my most trade-able assets and
    1. b) Which would you never trade to anyone?
    2. Team A took Carlos Santana in the 8th and Sal Perez in the 9th and needs pitching. Is it worth trading for Santana and if so who do i trade?

    3. Team B only drafted one closer and really wants another. He is offering me

    Soria for his Alex Wood
Axford for his Yordano Ventura or Taijuan walker.

Would you take either of these deals or hold onto all foour closers?

Once again thank you for your time. Your site is the second greatest accompaniment to fantasy baseball. Second only to beer.

    Curse your poem cursing profar!

I lost Profar and he was my only second baseman. I picked up Schoop to replace him..not sure it will work out. I have a strong outfield and I think I can afford to trade away Beltan or Domonic Brown. Who should I target?

In another H2H Yahoo league, Soria and Porcello are available. I feel like both are worth the pick up. I can drop either Yelich or Jose Veras. I already have Cishek and Axford and Veras as closers and I have the Dread Pirate, Bautista, Pence, Leonys Martin. Which one should I target and who should I drop? I’m leaning towards dropping yelich for porcello and picking up Soria and dropping Veras…

I’ve always liked Alcides Escobar and he’s a guy that you like to have a nice bounce back year. Do you see anyone on my roster I should/could drop for hm? Or do you think I should hang tight?

I know but I’m not a fan of the other SS available (should Alcides get picked up) and Segura’s numbers this spring aren’t so hot and he has arm soreness. So I dropped Delgado for Alcides. I figure it would be easier to find another back end starter than to find a SS should Segura continue to struggle.

    1) overall hows my team look in terms of balance?
    2) While I feel I got all the hitters I was targeting, I’m not particularly happy with my pitching. Unfortunately all the guys in your “matt harvey” tier this year were all kept or drafted earlier than I was expecting which really bummed me out. Although I was planning on mostly streaming/picking up cheap RP when closer spots open up, but do you think I should package Altuve and maybe Fister for some better pitching? Or just hold and ride out the waiver wire.

  127. I ended up doing 3 RCL drafts this year instead of 1, in the feeble hope that I might regain the glory of finishing top 30 last season. This league, known as “The league where everyone was drafting from work”, I just finished up and its clearly my favorite of the three. So it will likely be
terrible. I did autodraft Bourjos and Ramos (hurray two catchers) but those end of the depth chart guys often get flipped before a week’s up so noworries. Well some worries, I have two NYY starters, that can’t be good. Oh and there was a big run on 3b so I ended up with Headley but thats OK where I took him.

Grey, check out my team and let me know what you think. I’m not sure I drafted quite as well as I had hoped — was too timid early and did not grab a top 10 hitter. Regretting it, but hope I am solid across the board to compete in every category. Was 90-100% on most every category on the War Room (except saves, but will grab them on the wire when available). May have gone too high on “upside” rather than consistency.

Currently keeping my eyes on the goings-ons to determine if I am going to drop Cahill and use that streaming spot for either A) A streamer with two-starts in week 1. B) Archie Bradley if he makes the rotation. C) Soria (this would mean carrying 4 closers… could always drop Parnell instead).

Probably worth it to drop Cahill… He’s not even owned in my NL-Only league… I do like your team though, especially the hitting… Very solid, but the keepers didn’t hurt… The pitching is pretty big time too… Nice team…

@Grey: Thanks man. It really was all thanks to the keepers. I had the biggest budget of any team so I was able to buy the lineup I wanted. Unfortunately, I didn’t leave myself much by the time pitching came around but I think I patched together a balanced staff. I look forward to half of them needing Tommy John by Opening Day.

Would you trade either of these SPers:

I send Salazar or Fister for Abreu CHW

All three players can be kept for this year & next. Plus I have matching rights when they go to bid. Right now all are zero $$$ players which is key in my league.

Here is the rest of my team:

off topic but why do you feel like Jose Quintana is more likely to regress than progress?

I know he has had a bad spring but you dont care about that.

hes 25 years old, has solid minors numbers, and developed last season, his sophomore season to throw 200 rock solid innings. He doesnt give up a lot of homers, or walk many, and looks capable of 7ks per 9. I read you’re write up in this years top 80 slingers.

why dont you like him..? Is it just a gut feeling? low fastball velocity? magic 8 ball? regular 8 ball?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

He looks pretty marginal for most mixed leagues… He’s essentially a 7 K-rate, 2 BB-rate guy that could in the poop/pee tier, but his K-rate looks unsustainable… Probably closer to high 6… A high 6 K-rate is borderline 4 ERA territory and a streamer in most leagues… He doesn’t have any more upside than what he gave last year… If he gets lucky, he’s a solid backend mixed tier starter… If he gets unlucky, he’s on waivers…

    c1 Mauer
    c2 Pinto
    1b AuSchizz
    3B Longo
    CM Arenando

Speedsters on the waiver wire include Alcides, Venable, Boneface, Rajai, Victorino, and Gardner

Based on fixed salaries, I’d have to drop Werth to clear enough $ for one of these Sagnofs. Is the drop off in other production worth it for any of them ? Or is my pitching strong enough to overcome this shortcoming?

Haha, this sequence had me rolling:

Darin Ruf – Out for 6 weeks with a strained oblique. Ryne Sandberg said, “It’s unfortunate. We all wanted that to happen to Rollins.”
Freddy Galvis – Will start the year on the DL. When he heard the news, Sandberg walked by Rollins and simply said, “You did this.”
John Mayberry – Placed on the trading block because he was seen talking to Rollins.

Now, on to my daily trade ruminations – would you green-light any of these?
    A) His Brad Miller/Archer/Paxton for my Salazar/Taillon;
    B) Miller/Archer/Paxton/Tillman for Salazar/Erasmo/Taillon;
    C) There is no C!

My infield’s crowded with question marks, and I’m a big Miller fan: Carpenter, Machado, Arenado, Xander, Villar, Castellanos (when he becomes 3B-eligible).

Thanks for the great advice guys! I’m in a deep large roster 10-team keeper where we keep 4 hitters and 2 pitchers. I’d consider my pitchers “meh” – Greinke and Anibal. Given our rules, it looks like Hanley (or Tulo), Cliff Lee and Wainwright will all be available in the first round. Normally I go with hitting for the first few rounds, but with those outliers, I’m assuming I’d have to go with one of Lee or Wainwright if Hanley is gone? To give some perspective, guys like Upton, Freeman, Rios, Mauer, Trumbo, Choo, Teheran, Cobb, Minor, Wacha are also available in the first round.

I’d normally go hitter heavy and stream SPs, but with the pickup limit I’m thinking go hitters early. And a deep bench of SPs to rotate through.

    Thx
