I would submit that most of the backlash from the media about trading stars for prospects is due to our immediate/present focused attention spans. We typically only think in the here-and-now, especially when building a contender (i.e. think Yankees). However, even the Yankees have to have a studded farm system if they want to trade for top stars that can immediately help their team (same with Boston). The farm system is comparable to the NFL Draft. It just takes more time for baseball players to make it to the big leagues than NFL players/rookies to make an impact - same scenario for college basketball and NBA. (Same can be said about the AHL and NHL, the many levels of soccer.) Essentially, this boils down to Media/present vs GM thinking towards future. I know when we traded Bartolo we received, Cliff Lee, Grady, and Brandon Phillips, or 2 of those 3, can't rememeber now, and it looked horrible then, but ya.... i think i could pull off trading a cy young for prospects.
