The Futures Game will take place on July 14th at Citi Field as part of the MLB All-Star Game festivities.  Rosters were announced earlier this week.  Of the various all-star contests throughout Minor League Baseball, the Futures Game is King.  Instead of league-specific all-stars, the Futures draws its talent from leagues at all levels, class-A to Triple-A.  What we’re left with, then, are rosters that are crammed with real-deal prospects.  The format is USA versus the World, and there’s still time to vote on the final roster spot for each squad, but act quickly because that poll closes today.  I went with Nick Castellanos and Javier Baez on my ballot.  Who you got?

Maikel Franco | 3B, Phillies – Franco earned a well-deserved spot on the World team, as he continues his breakout season.  Promoted to Double-A little more than a week ago, the 20-year-old is batting .474/.487/.842 with 2 triples and 3 homers.  Moving from High-A to Double-A is regarded as the biggest jump in pro baseball (aside from the jump to the bigs, of course), but Franco is making the transition with ease, striking out only once in 9 games with Reading.

Kyle Crick | RHP, Giants – Crick, a member of the U.S. squad in the Futures Game, missed two months of action due to an oblique injury.  The 20-year-old returned to action on June 21st, and he’s made two starts with High-A San Jose since, allowing 3 hits, zero runs, and 4 walks in 9 IP, while striking out 18 across the two outings.  Crick’s fastball is among the best in the minors, bringing huge swing-and-miss potential to the fantasy game.

Corey Seager | SS, Dodgers – Brother of Kyle, Corey was drafted 18th overall last June, and he’s doing quite well in his first year of full-season baseball, batting .294/.352/.497 at Low-A Great Lakes.  An advanced approach to go with plus grades for both power and hitting make this 19-year-old a shortstop of interest for the fantasy-minded, although many see him moving to 3B by the time he’s ready for the bigs.

Oscar Taveras | OF, Cardinals – Oscar Taveras is back on the DL with the same ankle injury that caused him to miss a month earlier this season.  I hope I can get through the rest of this post without shorting out my keyboard from these tears.

Dylan Bundy | RHP, Orioles – In other sad news, Dylan Bundy underwent Tommy John surgery on Thursday.  Did anyone really think that the platelet-rich plasma injection was gonna work?  It’s easy to say in retrospect, but it seemed pretty evident that surgery was the endgame from the first news of elbow soreness this spring.  Oh, well.  Bundy likely won’t resurface as a MLB option until 2015.

Byron Buxton | OF, Twins – After hitting .341/.431/.559 through 68 games at Low-A Cedar Rapids, the Twins have promoted Buxton to High-A Fort Myers.  It was a move we all saw coming, but it’s still exciting to have the 19-year-old phenom knocking on the upper levels door.

Grant Green | 2B, Athletics – Green is on fire at Triple-A Sacramento, hitting .455/.489/.909 with 4 homers through his last 10 games.  On the year, he’s batting .320/.377/.511 with 11 long balls.  The A’s could use a steady option at 2B, and Green could be an above average fantasy MI as soon as he arrives in Oakland, which could be soon.  Expect to see him in my prospect power rankings revision this coming Wednesday.

Xander Bogaerts | SS, Red Sox – With three more homers in his last seven games, Bogaerts is cracking long balls at Triple-A at a much better rate than he was at Double-A.  His overall hitting, however, hasn’t been quite so impressive:  .214/.279/.429 through 14 games with Pawtucket.

George Springer | OF, Astros – The Astros have promoted Springer to Triple-A, and he’s already homered in just three games with Oklahoma City.  He’s just one stop from Houston, but I’m still thinking that the 23-year-old gets the Wil Myers treatment, and we won’t see him in the bigs till next June.

Jorge Soler | OF, Cubs – Soler has a broken leg and won’t see the field again until late this season.  Disappointing news for the 21-year-old who was batting .281/.343/.467 in 55 games with High-A Daytona.

Miguel Sano | OF, Twins – I mentioned last week that Sano appeared to be getting more comfortable at Double-A.  Well, he’s now homered 4 times in his last 4 games, and through his last 10, he’s hitting .297/.350/.838.  More comfortable, indeed.

Danny Hultzen | LHP, Mariners – Hultzen returned to Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday after missing more than two months to injury.  He looked strong in his first game back, tossing 6 scoreless frames and fanning 6, while allowing only 3 baserunners (2 H, 1 BB).

    Does Springer’s K-rate concern you?

Will Sano reach AAA this year?

    • Doorstop says:

@malamoney: Erasmo i think. Hultzens injury hurt him more in his road back.

    • Scott Evans

Erasmo. Springer’s will always carry a hefty k-rate… not a huge cause for concern. Doubt it on Sano, but not out of the question.

Twins need to get in playoff contention, you know..so they can call up Sano the prodigy. Sano for 2013, I’m crazy but let a man dream. Let me dream…

Perfect timing, just won the claim on Stephenson (didnt realise I had the no1 prospect waiver claim!).

    Whos my drop:
    M Barnes, Hultz, G Brown.

Still no news in Hultzen? He might be the guy then if hes still injured…

    Now to read the post!

    • TheNewGuy says:
      (link)

@TheNewGuy: oh and just to get your thoughts on this deal I made last week, shouldve got your thoughts in Puig first but he accepted quicker than I expected (non-keeper):

Traded Puig and R Zimm for Longo

Was getting fed up of Zimms inconsistency as a 4th rnd pick and had a glut of OFs with Kemp coming back. Obviously this was before Longos foot issue, so did you like it at the time? All depends on Puig I guess, but his value cant be higher right now. Tried for Miggy but unsuprisingly his owner wasnt budging.

      • Scott Evans

        Scott Evans says:

      • TheNewGuy says:
        (link)

@Scott Evans: Did say I always post before I read man! Ha

Yeah I dropped Barnes, been terrible this year, plus the Ms have pitching needs and favourabe park.

Not too enamoured with Gary Browns numbers though. Missed the boat on Franco and Gallo (smart owner we got in our league), so is there any other under the radar breakout types, or go with a guy like B Goodwin maybe? Pissed I missed out on Franco, hes exactly the kinda guy ive been hoping to grab! Try and post up good things about these upcoming prospects a little earlier next time man so we can grab em first.

Got a choice between Josh Bell (Pit) and Brian Goodwin (Was) as a throw in for a keeper league where prospects are very valuable (can be kept cheaply for up to 5 years). Looks like Goodwin’s tailed off a little this year, but was highly rated coming into the year. Not worried about more immediate impact, who do you think has more upside? Thanks Scott!

    • Scott Evans

      Scott Evans says:

Very similar upside, but I’m leaning toward Goodwin.

    Great article, Scott

In a 12 team dynasty. would you move:

    Heyward/Profar/Cole for Fielder/Franklin(Trying to get a 3rd player out of him…maybe Hamels) and then flip Fielder/Grienke for J Upton/Scherzer?

So essentially I would be trading:

    Heyward/Profar/Cole/Grienke for JUpton/Scherzer/Franklin

Good work as usual. I’ve overlooked Green this year, probably due to prospect fatigue and his outfield sabbatical, but I’m going to have to take another look.

I’m deciding between Renato Nunez, Nick Williams, Michael Ynoa, and Rougned Odor for my last farm slot in a dynasty format (12 tm., 5×5 roto, 15 man farm). 2013 signees, whether draft or international, aren’t eligible, so most top 150 guys are gone. I’m loaded with hitting prospects, 13 of 14 spots, but am still leaning towards another hitter. Ynoa’s very intriguing though. Any thoughts?

    • Scott Evans

      Scott Evans says:

Yeah, lots of people have been looking past Green… Ynoa or Odor, but I lean toward Odor.

  22. B says:

Scott, in a dynasty league with one bench spot to fill with a future star (gotta be one I’d want to begin 2014), who do you like best: hultzen, taijuan, Carlos Martinez, Sano, buxton, springer, singleton, olt? Would love to know how you rank them weighing upside and timing together… Thanks man.

    • Scott Evans

      Scott Evans says:
      (link)

Singleton, Sano, Walker, C-Mart, Springer, Olt, Hultzen… Buxton is more of a mid-late 2014 arrival, otherwise, he’d lead the list.

      • B says:
        (link)

@Scott Evans: i need a 1B because I have machado and moose (for better or worse) at 3B. But is Singleton going to be as good or close to as good as Sano? Is he really going to be elite at 1B?

        • Scott Evans

          Scott Evans says:

“weighing upside and timing together” … Singleton will arrive before Sano, which puts him over the top.

    • Scott Evans

      Scott Evans says:

I know it’s early, but I’m already starting to plan my keepers (keep 25/38) h2h, points 10 team league. Am I crazy for thinking I’d rather stash Byron Buxton at the end of the year than hold onto Curtis Granderson or Josh Hamilton? I have Trout, Joey Bats, and Taveras as well in my outfield. Nobody is holding Buxton yet but I plan to grab him around the end of the year and hold him at the expense of either Grandy or Hammy. Thanks.

          Scott Evans says:
          (link)

Precisely. Also worth noting that Wacha has been given a breather… trying to save his arm in case they need it late this year. So that puts C-Mart first in line for starts if Kelly falters.

grey sent me over to ask about when/if cole goes down. He thinks in a few starts. I thought it was completely about when burnett and wandy come back. But wandy’s had 2 or 3 separate set backs. i just saw on a pirates message board that it could be just occasional starts knocked off to keep the innings down so that he’d still be useful in october (more important to us is if he’s useful in september specifically); rather than the full scale Strasburg style shutdown. Or could even be like the wacha every 6 day treatment just to slowly move the innings up. Any ideas here? I don’t know where grey read about going down in next few starts.

    • Scott Evans

      Scott Evans says:
      (link)

Workload-wise, figure he has roughly 70 IP remaining before they’ll wanna shut him down… I think the most likely scenario is that he pitches all of those in the bigs w/ extra days off when possible. I’ve heard nothing definitive about him being demoted when the others get healthy. And he’s sure proving himself as steady MLB option for a pennant contender, isn’t he?

      • goodfold2 says:
        (link)

@Scott Evans: yes, he most certainly is, and i picked him up in both a 10 teamer and a 16 teamer about 5 days before his first start. weird too, certain guys that have done much worse were stashed way before him (wheeler, gausman, bundy). I’ve only been able to get cole and cingrani (only his first string of starts, then i dropped him). I now have eraser and cole in the 16 teamer, but in both wondering when to get c-mart. don’t quite want to drop perez/wilhelmsen/eovaldi/cole yet for c-mart in the 10 teamer or robertson/o.perez/smyly/martin perez/milone/cole for him yet in the 16 teamer either. But to make sure i get him i probably will soon have to drop somebody. it’d be much easier if wilhelmsen just got the damn job back now. Then it’d be dropping perez in both spots for c-mart.
