I’ve seen some ‘smarter’ players drafting Michael Pineda way too high.  Like in the top 110 overall.  I don’t care that he had the third highest xFIP last year and the 8th best xFIP in 2015.  I mean, I do care about it, that’s why I’m highlighting him, but I don’t care top 110 overall care.  I’m operating a little without a safety net with the sleepers by not having a strong idea of where guys will be drafted.  I’m merely guessing where guys will be drafted, and I’d bet Pineda will go undrafted in a lot of shallower mixed leagues or after 200 overall in most other leagues.  At that price, he’s a sleeper and I’m interested in his xFIP.  For noobs, xFIP is essentially ERA while removing defense, luck, sequencing and normalizes for homers.  All of those should be self-explanatory except for maybe sequencing.  That means a guy that gives up a single, gets two outs, allows a home run and gets the third out is the same as a pitcher that gives up a home run, a single and then gets three outs, even though the 1st pitcher gave up two runs and the 2nd pitcher gave up one run with the exact same hitter results — a single, a home run and three outs, just in a different order.  All things being equal, a pitcher should be his xFIP self.  It doesn’t work like that for various reasons, but it’s a baseline.  Not quite the same as Humpty Hump’s bass line.  That’s dooooree-doooorit-dooooree-doooorit.  Ricky Nolasco made a career out of frustrating fantasy owners by never returning ERA bottles for his xFIP deposits.  Honestly, if it was just xFIP for Pineda, I wouldn’t even be writing this post, but it’s not, and with that…So, what can we expect from Michael Pineda for 2017 fantasy baseball and what makes him a sleeper?

He has sub-3.00 ERA stuff in a tough division.  I don’t throw that around willy nor nilly.  I like him better than AL Cy Young winner, Rick Porcello.  Pineda’s average fastball velocity was 92.8 MPH in 2015, last year it was 94.1 MPH.  I love that.  Doode’s upping his velocity and it was already smoke.  He had the 5th best swinging strike rate with 14.1%.  Just above him was the best in the majors:  Kershaw, Scherzer, Syndergaard and Jo-Fer (RIP).  Syndergaard and Jo-Fer were only barely better with a 14.2%.  This means 14.1% of strikes that Pineda threw were swung at and missed.  The best in the majors Scherzer and Kershaw were tied at 15.3%.  Can you think of a better stat of dominance?  A guy is throwing strikes and the hitter swings and misses 14% of the time.  That’s crazy.  Who do you think is also nasty?  Chris Sale?  He was only at 11.3%.  Carrasco and Kluber were down at 12%.  Pedro Martinez had a 2.23 ERA in 2003 and only had a 14.1%.  Okay, point made.  Last year, Pineda threw a 2.7 BB/9.  Not great.  Not death, but he’s been better.  In 2015, he had a 1.2 BB/9.  If he approaches that again with his newfound 10.6 K/9, Pineda will have a 2.50-ish ERA.  His control wasn’t great.  His Hard Contact Rate had issues too.  Something wasn’t computing.  He was throwing pitches that no one could touch, then, on other occasions, he was allowing some of the hardest contact in the majors.  I’m going to guess this had more to do with game plans and immaturity than his stuff.   Also, due to his xFIP, this won’t surprise anyone, Pineda was crazy unlucky with homers and BABIP.  If you give up hard contact, a BABIP is going to be a problem.  Difficult to get around that, but his Ks and contact rates show he shouldn’t give up that hard contact.  He’s 27 years old and needs to throw less and pitch more.  He doesn’t come without risk, but he could be a top 15 pitcher in all fantasy with very little adjustment.  For 2017, I’ll give him the projections of 12-7/3.46/1.16/214 in 195 IP with huge upside from there.

@Grey: I got hit up on Tinder by a girl that looked exactly like Benintendi. I took this as a sign from God that he was going to be a sure thing this year. I also took it as a sign from God because I’m married and don’t even have a Tinder account.

Buxton’s passed failures at the MLB level do not signify that he won’t have better numbers with some confidence, or more importantly, with a change to approach at the MLB level. I assume Grey’s thought here is batting position, which plays a vital role. But I think Benintendi is up from day one through day October, where Buxton will be up but not necessarily hitting leadoff if he struggles. (they don’t have many other options, but we’ve seen some pretty odd people leading off in the last 2 years, so I don’t think there’s a stigma against a non-conventional lineup anymore…)

Benintendi on the reigning best lineup in baseball (albeit without Ortiz that could change). The knock on him is that he’s a glue guy more than a fantasy sports guy… but I see that changing in the next couple years. I think he’s a 15/15 guy waiting to happen. Buxton might get you more steals, but SAGNOF.

@Grey: He’s proven to be a better hitter than Buxton for a year now. He’s never struggled at any level (other than 2 weeks in AA), has less holes in his swing, and 100% has an everyday job. Also in a better lineup, in a better park.

I don’t get Buxton over Beni, but I freely admit I have skin in the game with Benintendi on several levels. If he sucks I may have to quit Razzball. Buxton’s September seems flukie staring with that 36% HR/FB….

Pineda will be only 28 this month, his best years are still ahead! A younger Yankees team will also help him. I believe he is gonna have a monster year this year or next or both for that matter..His stuff is just to good to keep being mediocre..

    • mick says:
      (link)

      @Malicious Phenoms:

If Pineda doesn’t have a “monster” year in 2017, he’ll be wearing a different uniform in 2018. He’s mediocre because he doesn’t have he ability to consistently hit the black in 0-2 or 1-2 counts. The guy just throws too many pitches.

      • Malicious Phenoms says:
        (link)

        @mick:
I agree Mick, he does tend to nibble when he gets ahead in the count 1-2, 0-2, of using his best pitch to put the hitter away with two strikes…Think how many more K’s he could get a game if he did that.

        • mick says:
          (link)

          @Malicious Phenoms

I’m not necessarily that big a fan of K’s, lol. I’d be really happy if he developed a change up and a four seamer, which would change the eye level of the hitter. He also has that annoying , phobic issue of taking a lunch break between pitches. I’d hate playing behind him. It’d take him seven hours to throw a perfect game. His stuff just isn’t good enough to be a two pitch pitcher.

          • Sinkhole Demayo says:
            (link)

@mick: that might be a big part of it, he takes too long between pitches (so he’s the epitome of actually watching an entire NYY-BOS game on sunday night), move him to the NL make him actually pitch to what the rules of MLB say timewise, he might get a CY young at PIT or somewhere.

Great write-up as always! You’re really gearing up, making it difficult for February Grey to match or better the effort!!! Take it down a gear and pace yourself, man! It’s a long season! LOL!

    a. So, went on a few excursions like I had mentioned. On Friday we went to Santo Domingo for the day. Nothing special to report, average salaries are low in the Dominican Republic (around 350$ per month), the price of monthly rental of an average apartment is SUPER expensive (in the 800 to 1000$ per month range) and the price of buying an average one-bedroom apartment is around 35,000 to 50,000$. So, you ask no doubt, how do they make ends meet? Good question, I have no idea. The math does not compute.

    b. On Saturday we went on an excursion to Scape Park in Cap Cana. Scape Park=how to say escape park in Spanglish=’escape’ from what? Basically it’s a park of about 10000 acres with like 8 different activities – blue rock, a bat cave with lots of bat poop (tour guide says don’t open your mouth in the bat cave), 8 zip lines – 4 big, 4 small, horseback riding, and some other excursions. Each excursion can be combined with any other and each costs 43$ per adult with the boat cruise to Saona Island costing 20$ per person more. Each excursion lasts about 2 hours. More or less, meh for the dollar. Zip line was the best because it was the first time that I was scared shitless in a long time.

    c. Our bus route from the hotel to Scape Park took us through Al Sol Resort (…https://www.alsolluxuryvillage.com/). Big Papi is apparently there but security is SUPER tight. Apparently from the rumors that I was able to get, Big Papi…

    1. Rented out the entire floor of a wing of this luxury resort, one of only 2 luxury resorts in Cap Cana. Cap Cana has the nicest beaches in ALL of the Caribbean, ergo the nicest beaches in all of the world!
    2. Is in the heart of almost everyone in DR. I asked one of the tour guide assistant’s, ‘Donde esta David Ortiz?’ He says, without hesitation, ‘Aqui’ pointing to his heart!

    d. Took a photo of what I’m almost 100% sure is Larry Holmes. The picture taken with my Iphone 4 is a little blurry because I was faking like I was taking a picture of something above his head while trying to take his picture.

    e. And, oh boy, will I love Michael Pineda next year! Thanks a lot.

    f. Sorry, wife is calling to bring her some tablets. Tomorrow is get-away day! Really loved the trip!

Given the current COL situation, and assuming that COL has no other major moves – is Tapia a guy you’d be drafting in 12 team mixed keepers (weekly lineups) over brinson, meadows, rogers, or other prospects? Hard to see how Tapia gets regular playing time absent injury or trade — and even then, COL would need to pick Tapia over moving Desmond to OF (and having someone else play 1b).

Also, have seen all the projection systems on Eric Thames?!?! I have no faith in him, but hard to argue against taking a $1 gamble when he’s projecting like a 2nd rounder.

If Tapia had a path to starting this year, I’d pick him up as a starting OF (not reserve), but with him in the 4th OF role most likely, I’m lumping him with the other rookie reserve round upside guys.

If you buy into fangraphs pitch values his fastball was graded at negative 26.2 or -26.2 for short. On the other hand his slider was 17.5, good for 7th best in baseball. Now, who is ahead of him on that slider list with a huge negative fastball…Chris Archer. I was all in on Pineda last year. He has the stuff but like Archer he only has three pitches yet I can’t take my eyes off his upside. I don’t buy into the high babip always being bad. Thor is right next to him in babip but the killer is the dong service Pineda provides. 17% HR/FB (5th best among qualified pitchers ) where Thor is on the other end of the dong spectrum. All in all I like this post. The risk is evident but the reward could be a monster. A true sleeper. Let me buy you a daiquiri for your boldness. But only one, I’ve seen you after two.

Hay Grey I’m loving what you are doing :) Thanks for it.
But now I need your help I’m not a big baseball freak but I’m in a big dynasty Fantasy League (16 Players,30 Man Rosters, big minor league squad) and I’m trying to compete. I want you to take a look at my Rotation and help me to make a decision on a trade.
My Starting pitchers are (Ranked by my preference):
    -Syndergaard (12$)
    -Lester (15$)
    -Martinez(15$)
    -Darvish (8$)
    -Lynn (8$)
    -Gausmann (1$)
    -Musgrove (0.5$)
    -Phelps (1$)
    -Devenski (1$)
    -Graveman (1$)
    -Fister (1$)
    -Cotton (1$)

1st Of all what do you think about my pitchers ? And what do you think about my Ranking?
With 30 Man Teams i think i have a lot of guys. Someone offered me Jake Arrieta (23$) he wants to get a little bit more pitcher depth so he wants to get some Pitchers. What would be a trade you would like to go for it ?

    • Saints says:

Your pitching looks great, you have four aces… Your ranking looks fine, you look like you know what you’re doing! Arrieta for who? Arrieta for any/all of these guys: -Musgrove (0.5$)
      -Phelps (1$)
      -Devenski (1$)
      -Graveman (1$)
      -Fister (1$)
      -Cotton (1$)

      Is fine

        @Grey:
Yeah i like my pitching as well. You would give all these guys away for Arrieta ?

He’s intriguing. Available in my dynasty, can draft in in my first year player draft and/or Rudy and try to add him to my MLB roster when yahoo opens.

My main question is was there a change in approach at MLB level which resulted in 8.5K/9 when his MiLB rate in 2016 was 6.9K/9 ? Or is it small sample size ?

Excellent read again Grey, may have to try and trade for Pineda. See what someone wants for him.

        Ralph Lifshitz says:
        (link)

@Another Dan: That I can’t say for sure. But most of the scouting reports I’ve read credit an up tick in his secondary stuff. The fastball is nasty. For me, I love that he works low in the zone gets tons of groundballs. He also throws a lot of first pick strikes, which helps everything play up.

        • Another Dan says:

Thanks. I have some decisions to make regarding draft strategy. I have 2 picks in the next 12 (currently waiting for pick 10, I have 14 and 20).

Am thinking I might get one of Collins/Thaiss and then one of McKenzie/Gsell/Gonsalves/Fedde/Buehler (he related to Ferris?). The order is probably the order I would take them in.

          Any advice?

First of all, you have the best fantasy baseball site out….period….
Question – Is Bregman someone you can build a team around? Do you see him as a high ceiling player?

Thanks! I think Bregman is going to be a solid bat, but I don’t think his upside is that of, say, Correa — Bregman looks like a young Ryan Zimmerman, which isn’t as bad as it sounds

@Billy Bob: young r-zimm was quite good.

@Grey: Hello friend! Would love to hear your opinion on my keeper options:

    12 Team H2H Category
OBP instead of AVG, SVHD instead of SV
Keepers can be kept indefinitely with no penalty. Please pick 3:

    Goldy
    Sale
    Springer
    Stanton
    Story

@swaggerjackers: I guess I should throw Synder in there as well. He seems to have the edge in the K department over Sale these days.

    Grey,

We miss your podcasts. Winter is shitty cold in the Midwest and we need your humor. Giddy up, biotch.

    Cheers,
    Uncle Ed

I watched (or listened to) most of his starts and my unscientific conclusion is that he sometimes left breaking stuff hanging over the plate or grooved fastballs, and when he did, kaboom.

This doesn’t seem uncommon, or unfixable, for a young guy who has had to work his way through several arm injuries. Love him for where we should be able to get him.
