Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

I just want to put it out there, I love Eric Young Jr. I have a plan in place to have Prince Fielder have a long discussion Eric Young Jr. about nogoodnik fathers and step in as EY Jr.’s surrogate.  We will vacation in Orlando and try faux exotic foods at Epcot, like Greek and Spanish.  When Eric Young Jr. Jr. needs someone to go to the PTA meetings, I will be there.  When Erica Young needs a date to a cousin’s wedding or something, the tux will be rented, the corsage will be picked from a neighbor’s yard and the Drakkar will be spritzed.  I will be Sandra Bullock and Eric Young will be my very own Michael Oher.  (BTW, I liked The Blind Side better when it was called Diff’rent Strokes.)  And if that doesn’t all work out as planned, I’ll own him in fantasy for steals.  Don’t you people need some MI speed?  Own him.  Now.  Chop-chop.  Anyway, here’s some more players to Buy or Sell this week:

BUY

Jose Tabata – I mentioned to Rudy I was going to do a Buy lead-in with Jose Tabata and he said, “That’s about as dated as your mustache.”  But, Rudy, he’s hitting near-.500 over the last week with steals and a little pop and he’s only owned in 23% of ESPN leagues.  Rudy, “You running for President of the Jose Tabata Fan Club?”  Yes, yes I am.

Cameron Maybin – Who knew I’d recommend him?  Show of hands.  Okay, you can put your hands down now.  “Teach, I just want to go to the bathroom.”

Scott Podsednik – Manny’s about to exit stage left and Pods will get playing time again.  SAGNOF!

Marcus Thames – The Yankees have about 6 of these interchangeable DH-types.  Continued in the next blurb…

Austin Kearns – Number two of interchangeable Yankee DHs.  You can’t own either (or both, for that matter) without having an extra bench bat.  They don’t play every day, but when they do play they can give you HRs and RBIs.

Koji Uehara – Now for the SAGNOF portion of our program.

Evan Meek – I wouldn’t go two deep for saves in Pittsburgh unless I were in a dogfight for points in the saves category.  Meek and Hanrahananananan may only get a total of 4 saves between them in the whole month of September.

Hisanori Takahashi – Confirmed closer for the Mets, should be owned in every league.  Au Bon Japan!

Ivan Nova – With Javy Vazquez moving to the bullpen until TBA, Nova moves into the rotation until TBA.  Nova had more than an adequate time in Triple-A this year (2.86 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 7+ K/9).  On the Yankees he should be serviceable and get some Wins, but there’s always a chance he drops something in your drink and you wake up walking like you were just jumping hurdles.

Jordan Zimmermann – The pitch count restrictions worry me a bit with Zimmermann.  Do you need a starter to go 5 IP and give up 2 ER and walk away with a no-decision?  I don’t.  I have plenty of those guys on my staff.  Though Zimmermann is a must own in deep keepers.

Bud Norris – Just went over my Bud Norris fantasy.  If you click that link, it magically transports the post back a few days.  It’s like a time machine for words.

Daniel Hudson – Stop me if you’ve heard me tout him–

Kila Ka’aihue – Big Time Masher, Poi!  The Good Eyein’ Hawaiian!  Mauna Kila!  Choose your own nickname, and grab him if you’re hurting at corner infidel.

Mike Moustakas – He appeared in the 2010 September call-ups post.  There I said, “Has a cool… …gyro recipe… …and a picture of …Mr. Bungles… Keep effing that chicken…”  Hmm… Could’ve pulled a more coherent quote.

Dustin Ackley – Also, appeared in that September call-ups post.  I’m not very high on Ackley right now, but he should be owned in AL-Only and keeper leagues at this point.

Todd Helton – Trying to find something positive to say about him…  Dang, whatever.  He’s hitting, that’s all I got.

Juan Uribe – He gets absurdly hot at times and he’s coming off two straight games with a homer.  Since he has shortstop eligibility, he probably should be owned anyway.

Jhonny Peralta – I’ll probably write an entire post about this.  For now, shorthand.  It’s practically September.  You can’t hold underperforming guys and let hot hitters sit on waivers.  Is Silent H a great player?  Nope, but he’s hot.

Stephen Drew – Has 7 homers in August.  That’s two off the major league lead in homers for this month.  That’s one more homer than Tulo and Holliday combined.

Ryan Raburn – I told you to pick him up in the July 30th Buy/Sell.  This is the fourth week in a row I’ve told you to pick him up.  Do you hear me?!  Don’t make me come back there!

SELL

Mike Stanton – Drop him, he looks like the K’ing of Wishful Swings right now.  Obviously you ignore said advice in keepers.

James Loney – Has 8 homers and 9 steals with a .277 average on the year.  That’s not a 1st baseman; that’s a middle infielder.  Ian Desmond’s beating those numbers.  You own this guy?

Nick Markakis – I think I’ve already mentioned dropping him, but here he is again because I hate him and his stupid face.  You thought Loney’s season numbers were bad; check out Markakis.  8 homers and 6 steals with a .287 average.  It’s an impostor in his body — Dick Fartakis.

Stephen Strasburg – The pitcher whose stuff is so inspirational that both his first and last names start with St. looks like he’ll be martyring his 2011 season.  Evidently he’s mortal because he needs Dr. Freeze to save his ulnar collateral ligament.  Yup, the dreaded Tommy John surgery.  If you have him in a keeper league, put on some Sting, shed the necessary tears for the pitcher you love, and then set him free.  But try to snag him for a low bid next year’s draft so you can get keeper rights for 2012.

    Hey Grey,

    So, since Takahashi is in the buy section, I assume you wouldn’t drop him for either Jenks or Lyon? Takahashi hasn’t had a save chance since the 16th. . .

  2. Howie says:
    (link)

    @Grey: I am in the club who gambled on Strasburg this season and picked him up in my roto auction for cheap…two year keeper league. I could play the 2012 game and essentially work with one less pitcher than everyone else next year (per your advice)– but, I must ask– what is the historical success of pitchers the first back from TJ surgery? In addition to durability- and the Nats certain conservatism related to the # of innings they will allow him to pitch if the surgery is a success (crystal ball stuff here)- do pitchers typically lose some velocity post-TJ?

    Thanks,

    @Grey: It was 7 strangers (except for the two guys who knew each other from military academy in Seattle) up until a few seasons ago. My guess (honestly) is that they, as well as we, noticed there was always at least one dud in the bunch, so hopefully the 8th would provide some more drama. They played it off as a “you get to pick the 8th cast member” promo for Hollywood, I believe (“angry at and better than all of you black guy” won, if memory serves… and then got kicked off). Dunno’ if it’s still an audience pick of they just went to a straight-8 casting.

    greatly amused by your bitterness .

  5. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Earl Battey: I’d drop him for Jenks.

    @Howie: They don’t lose velocity, they lose control. Nats aren’t going to push him in 2012. I wouldn’t keep him in a two year keeper league.

    @Awesomus Maximus: Yeah, I think they probably saw the one dud and the one person the castmates kick off who is actually entertaining problem.

    @big o: Damn, Fartakis.

    @Grey: Just curious, other than for sexual fantasy and laughing at purposes, has there been any cast members that you actually liked on the show? Only person I can think of is Isaac (Australia)… just remember watching and thinking, “He actually has a good sense of humor, seems like the kind of guy my buddies and I would hang with, he pokes fun at the other drama queens in the house… why the hell did he apply to be on this show?” I could see having a few pints with Dom (San Fran), but I’d have a few pints with pretty much any Irishman.

  7. Grey

    @Awesomus Maximus: Isaac’s a good call. I think the cartoonist in Washinton seemed okay, minus the panda hat. Ace also seems like a nice guy.

    (Bear with me…this is long and borderline pathetic, and I may need a fantasy baseball intervention after this.) Need to pick up a starter for today in a league that counts losses, and I’ve narrowed it down to 1 of 2 guys: either Vargas vs. Min (Baker) or Pelfrey vs. Hou (Figueroa). At first glance it seems like a no-brainer to grab Pelfrey, but I’m not so sure. Pros and Cons for both:

    Pelfrey… PROS: Mets are 37-24 at Home, Pelfrey has a 3.19 ERA at Home and a 2.36 ERA in August.
    CONS: Houston has won 5 in a row, Pence is hot and is 4/10 in his career against Pelfrey, Mets have lost 2 in a row, Pelfrey’s counterpart Figueroa has a 1.64 ERA/1.09 WHIP in his last 2 (and first 2 career) starts (although he might be due for a schilacking)

    Vargas… PROS: Seattle is 50-77 overall but 29-32 at Home, Twins are only .500 on the road, Vargas has a 2.23 ERA at Home, he’s a lefty facing a lot of lefties (Mauer, Kubel, Span, Thome), his one start this year against the Twins he gave up 1 ER in 7 innings, even though Seattle’s lineup is terrible…vs Baker Ichiro is a .308 hitter/ Figgins .364 / Branyan .364 (+4HR in his last 5 games) / Lopez .429
    CONS: Vargas just got murdered by the Yankees @NY, Baker is coming off a good start (although he’s been up and down all year), and even if Seattle’s lineup hits Baker well, in the end they’re still Seattle’s lineup.

    Ok, that was more than borderline pathetic. Anyway, have I justified grabbing Vargas over Pelfrey for tonight, or would you grab Pelfrey?

    @Grey: Ah… Paris and D.C., the two seasons I didn’t watch a minute of.

    My B… the 8th cast member started with Brooklyn. I remembered the “you pick the last cast member” promo with Hollywood and assumed it was part of the cast growth. Why Brooklyn? Dunno’… perhaps they wanted to still have a combination of 7 men and women, and they’d already cast the post-op tranny. Who knew Chet would turn out to be gayer than the man who surgically became a “woman”?

  38. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @Awesomus Maximus: Ah, you missed CT. That’s a loss right there, friend. I’d Netflix that season if I could. Chet has a pashmina that says you’re dead wrong on him. You know the only reason they cast virgins is with the hope they have sex that season. They’re 0-for-3 now, I think.

    it sure would be nice to see the rockies duplicate their miracle finish ,
    of a few years ago .
    but , as that is unlikely to happen ,
    and half (3/6) of chacin’s remaining starts project out to be against the dodgers ,
    it appears that de la rosa is the strong play , here .

    do you concur ?

    jhouly’s start tomorrow , against billingsley , is an important one ,
    not only for the colorado rockies ,
    but for his fantasy owners , as well .

    @Grey: @big o: Oh FFS. Didn’t realise it was a balk.

    If they let Oswalt can play the field, you’d think they’d trust him to get three more outs.

    And WTF happened to James McDonald? He was cruising…

    @Grey: You love all things reality TV, as do I. Wondering if you ever caught a show called “The Colony”. Just saw a commercial for Season 2 the other night and it looked interesting, so I watched the first two episodes of Season 1 and so far so good. I like how they used sleep deprivation and other techniques to really make the people accept this experiment as their reality, and the commentary from experts in psychology/homeland security/etc. works well. Sort of like a mash up of Survivor and Junkyard Wars.

  97. Kazmere says:

    Grey, what do you think about Nolasco and his bum knee @ATL? 12 tm roto. I finally have a comfortable lead in ERA/WHIP, and am over about 60 innings. Bench?

    Need people’s opinion… Chase Utley was straight dropped in my league. Now this guy is not in contention (I’m in first ) so naturally I think this is fishy… I have 7th waiver priority and will not be able to get him as people in this league aren’t stupid. I believe I shall say something to the commish… any thoughts?

    Who should be my 5th?
    The candidates:
    Carlos Gonzalez
    Ian Kinsler
    Pedro Alverez
    Carlos Santana
    Matt Wieters

    @big o: I concur.

    @Steve: Yeah, a balk. Incredible. I have Oswalt in a league I really needed wins. I can’t do it alone here, guys!

    @Steve: I’m benching him. But I’m being super cautious.

    @Earl Battey: That’s hilarious!

    @Awesomus Maximus: Sounds cool, but never even heard of it. It’s going on my Tivo now.

    @Kazmere: Bench him.

    @Grey: so I decided in that 8 Teamer to just go ahead and run the table with closers and added Rodney to go along with Lyon. Now I have a nice little collection of Feliz, Soria, Capps, Lyon, Rodney.

    Any-the-who, with Mr. Utley back, and with a little love from Buddha maybe he’ll start producing, Weeks has been relegated to the bench in my 8 Team League. Weeks won’t be a keeper for me for next season, so I’m wondering if you would look at adding any of these guys that are currently producing for him:

    Bourn, Bruce, LaRoche, Carlosly, EYJ?

    In a 5×5 league, we have a 200 games started limit, and I’m currently running a little over the limit. I think I’ll need to skip 5 or 6 starts from here on out. I’m chasing wins, and would like to avoid anyone trashing my ratios. I’m currently first in Ks. Anyhow, would you skip any of the following upcoming starts? If you had to choose one, which would it be?

    1. Gallardo @ CIN (vs Bailey)
    2. DHudson vs HOU (Myers)
    3. Gio vs LAA (Kazmir)
    4. Haren @ SEA (Pauley)

    I’m thinking of skipping Gallardo, which means he’ll probably throw a perfect game. Hudson might provide some more information today. Gio has been great lately, and Haren vs Jane Pauley seems like one that Dan should win. Any thoughts? Thanks.

    @Grey: Diggin’ it so far. Basically a bunch of strangers are thrown into a post-apocalyptic situation (an abandoned area of California in Season 1) with no electricity, no running water, no communication, etc. There’s a ‘sanctuary’ which is an abandoned warehouse that’s full of useful stuff, and they can move around the large area outside to scavenge for more stuff, but the show has planted ‘marauders’ to screw with them (attempt to break into their warehouse, steal their stuff, scare them, etc.), and they need to use whatever knowledge and skills they have to figure out how to sustain their lives (create fuel for power, filter water to make it safe for consumption, set up security for the warehouse). The fact that there are several engineers, a doctor, an ER nurse, an ex-con, a martial arts expert and more makes for interesting solutions to their problems, and also interesting personal storylines. Pretty cool stuff.

    Ratios are shot and I’m chasing wins and Ks.
    Wish me luck…

    @Grey: What… torrent files? Nah, from what I’ve read you just get a simple client like uTorrent (http://www.utorrent.com/), then go to a torrent site (like, say… http://www.thepiratebay.org) and search “the colony season 1″. When the search results come up, you click the little double green arrow under the file named “Season 1 – The Colony” to get the .torrent file, and then you just open that file with uTorrent and let it download the files. Easy, breezy, fumunda cheesy… at least, that’s what I’ve read about this kind of stuff.

    @Grey: Does Cruz’ return to the Rangers OF mean I should find a replacement for David Murphy? Lineups in this league are set weekly, so there is no “Grey” area. He is either in or out, and I’m not going to put him in if he only plays 3 or 4 of every 7 days. Also, a potential replacement for him on my bench is Burrell. I haven’t really been monitoring the Giants outfield situation other than noticing that they have like 5 of them. Is Burrell playing everyday? Would you start Burrell in place of Murphy?

    I was just doing a bit of research on some fringe starters in my league and this is how their starts break if they stick to a 5 day schedule:
    Norris @ARI, @LAD, vs.MIL, @WAS, @PIT, vs.CHC
    LeBlanc @ARI,vs.COL, vs.SF, @COL, @LAD
    Kennedy vs.SD, vs.SF, @COL, @PIT, vs. COL, @SF
    Wolf @CIN, @PHI, vs.CHC, @SF, vs.CIN, @NYM, @CIN
    Bum vs. COL, @ARI, @SD, vs.MIL, @CHC, vs. ARI

    Looks like Norris has the easiest schedule. Bum could be worthwhile if he pitches well this week vs. COL.

    @struggler: Agreed, Norris and Bum do look like the best from that.

    Drop Alex Gonzalez for the Silent H? I’m just running the hot bat out there in SS for now in my 8 teamer…seems to be working for me so far…

    Is Masset still the 8th-inning righty for the Reds?

    Assuming he didn’t pitch today cos he pitched 2 innings on the 25th and 28th?

    I have Cory Hart at one of my utility spots — 12 team, 5×5 roto league with no bench, and he hasn’t been doing too much lately. I’m doing fairly nicely on RBI/HRs, but could lose some points if I don’t keep it up. Way behind on speed, but could pick up a point or 2 perhaps in the last weeks of the season. I’m wondering whether I should keep hart, E young Jr., or Will Venable for that spot — I only can keep one of them.

    So on the one night where Tabata isn’t productive from my team and Fowler is productive from the FA pool, I gotta ask:

    Fowler or Tabata?

    @Elijah: Yeah, not too bad. Shame about the wins.

    @Eddy: Tomato, tomahto. If you wanna try Fowler, go for it.

    Looking at the game tonight –
    I know the sox are hanging on by a prayer – yet it is pretty remarkable to see these Triple A players stepping up for the club. Who had the RBIs tonight but Scutaro and Navarro. Navarro? Radio call in shows have been killing Francona for putting him in tonight and BAM Navarro says thank you for the trust.

    @BSA: The N word in Boston, “Nava”
    Another RBI this time Nava. You can’t make this stuff up.

    In a 16 Team H2Her do you like Pelfrey or Chacin better for the rest of the year? I was going to drop Hanrahanananan for Chacin but someone just dropped Rodney (not really sure why) so I made a waiver claim on Rodney and am attempting to drop Hanrahan for him (won’t know until Wednesday if I get the claim).

    buck or soto the rest of the way, and

    who gets saves if nunez keeps sucking? hensley is taken in my league.

    @Grey: Had ESPN’s Stephania Bell come thru my checkpoint 2day at LAX. For kicks, i was gonna ask her to break down Strasburgs TJ surgery, again, for the millionth time this week. But, i didnt want to hold up the line for 15 minutes. She looks really old in person, like pushing 50 old. But, what a nice rack she has…

    And can I drop Reyes if I really need the roster spot, or should I just wait til the Mets DL him? In other words, when do you think the stupid Mets will actually DL him?

  220. Does anyone really believe A Chapman’s throwing 105 MPH? Reminds me of the all star game where guys that normally throw 95ish were suddenly hitting 100 on the ‘radar guns’. Still, its nice to see the Reds actually in a playoff hunt for the first time in recent memory.

    @Grey:

    I’m going to thank you a second time around once the season closes up, but I felt the need to show some love right now.

    I just want to flat out say thank you for all the help you provided this year Grey. I know you hear different variations of those words on a daily basis when you answer that Napoli is better than “insert any 15 catchers here”, but honestly, thank you.

    Before I found this site in Dec. 2009, I had only one FBB season under my belt and I had no clue what I was doing draft day 2009. Fast forward one year and I was a freaking pro this year and I owe it 100% to you. Everything from SAGNOF to trusting pitchers who had terrible previous seasons. You made me look forward to weekdays and get bummed out on weekends. This site, so richly infused with all sorts of comedy, is impossible to replace.

    Thanks to you, Rudy, Stephen, and Smokey I made it into the playoffs in 4 out of 4 H2H leagues and placed 2/12, 3/12, 3/16, and 4/12. Not to mention holding 3rd place in my first ever RCL for a good 2 months before dipping to my current 6th place.

    You can rest assure that once the season officially closes, not only will I open up a PayPal account for the sole reason of donating LONG overdue money, but I’ll be sitting in front of my computer everyday, counting down the minutes until the headline reads ” Top 10 for 2011 Fantasy Baseball”.

    Thank you
