Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

“That guy looks vaguely familiar.”  “Which guy?”  “That guy on the mound.”  “The Chris Tillman fella?”  “Yeah.”  “Did he used to serve us coffee at the Blue Danube?”  “I don’t think so.  That guy’s name was Ronnie.  And he had dreads.”  “But he was white.”  “Yeah, Ronnie was a white guy with dreads.  He looked like he had a smelly undercarriage.”  “I don’t disagree.  White guys with dreads always remind me of Snow… Informer!”  “Don’t sing, man.  So… This guy… This Chris Tillman guy… He just looks so familiar.”  “Not sure, man.  Informer!”  “He just threw a 8 1/3 IP, 0 ER, 4 baserunners, 7 Ks start against our M’s, but I feel like I know him.”  “Informer!”  “Wait, now that he’s standing next to Adam Jones that guy who just homered, I remember where I know him!  They were coveted prospects in our Mariners’ system that we traded for Erik Bedard.”  “Damn, we’re so Bedarded.”  That was two Mariner fans watching the Fourth of July game.  (BTW, the guy who started calling it Fourth of July met some opposition at first — Twelve after twenty!)  Tillman used to be the weak side of the Double Stuff Orioles.  The other side:  Matusz.  Yeah, that side ended up being Hydrox, and we’ll nothing speak of it again.  Young pitchers and Craigslist ads that read, “5′ 7″, 120 lbs., fitness model who loves cooking and cleaning and sex” are often very similar.  Expectations and reality don’t always run hand in hand.  Before picking up Tillman, do me one favor.  Ask Matusz’s owners how the experience was owning him.  Though since they’re probably your competition they may lie to you.  Those bastards!  Maybe you can ask Matusz yourself since he’s probably on your waivers.  Can Tillman be lights out?  I suppose — in Triple-A, he did have a 9+ K-rate and got his walks mostly in check.  Is he worth a flyer in 12 team leagues?  Fine, but I’d keep expectations in check.  You should proceed with caution.  Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

Jesus Montero – Took a foul tip off the mask as he got the bejesus knocked out of him.  He has a mild concussion but he doesn’t want to go to the DL.  It’s not clear if he’s being hardheaded and should go to the DL or if he’s just got a hard head.

Justin Ruggiano – There’s hot schmotatos.  There’s schmotatos.  There’s even stories of a young man being raised by hot schmotatos in the woods and when he started living amongst the mass population he’d drape himself in cheddar cheese and sour cream and try and sprinkle bacon bits every time he entered a room.  That last one is Ruggiano.  He’s outta his mind right now.  Yesterday, a slam & legs.  The day before that homer.  Day before that homer.  Day before that he filmed a double rainbow.  There’s nothing he’s not hitting.  Get on the Ruggiano before the Mafia realizes he’s Pujols in the Witness Protection Program.

Giancarlo Stanton – An MRI revealed a “loose body” in his knee.  Okay, I’m busted, but I swear when I went into his knee to hang out, I never thought I’d get stuck in here.  The restraining order said within 250 feet, but that’s starting from his skin and out — I asked!  He sat out again yesterday, but hopes to play on Friday.  I put an offer out before, but it still holds.  If Stanton wants me to massage his knee with my tongue, I’d be happy to.  It is the strongest muscle!

Logan Morrison – Pinch hit homer and his 2nd homer in as many games.  Look at the preseason probably-overdrafted-sleeper finally doing something.  I’d say more, but I’m at my 140 character limit.

Gaby Sanchez – 2-for-3 with his 3rd homer.  Good to see Anibal’s pheromones aren’t affecting Gaby.

Brandon Moss – 3-for-4 with his 10th homer vs. the Sawx, the team that once had Moss in their system.  Must be so nice to get revenge against a team that gave up on you.  It’s like when you go into Chick-Fil-A wearing a KFC bucket for a hat and the cops ask you to leave so you grab a ranch dressing on the way out to eat.  (The preceding was to make our homeless readers welcome.)  Moss had 15 homers in 51 games in Triple-A this year and 10 homers in 24 games with the A’s.  I grabbed him in one league, maybe you do the same then we can hold hands and tell ghost stories about how in March we never thought we’d have Brandon Moss playing 1st base on our fantasy teams.

A.J. Griffin – 6 IP, 1 ER, 5 baserunners, 3 Ks.  I saw the box score reading A. Griffin and I was like, “He’s alive!”  Meaning:  Alfredo Griffin.  Not Andy Griffith.  His name wasn’t even Griffin.  Griffin had a better-than-average strikeout rate in the minors and excellent control.  So far in the majors, his strikeout rate is less-than-average and his walk rate is solid.  In AL-Only leagues… Well, in AL-Only leagues, you’re hoping Brad Peacock gets called up and everyone’s rostered, but I’d grab Griffin there.  In mixed leagues, he’s still only mediOAKer.

Ervin Santana – 1 1/3 IP, 8 ER.  Ervin, you stupid poop!

Casey Kotchman – 2-for-3, 3 RBIs and his 7th homer as he raises his average to .231.  Casey Krotchman would make a great porn name, I’m just not sure of the gender.

Garrett Jones – 2-for-4 and so hot right now he got the start against a lefty.  Granted, it was an Astros pitcher with more walks than Ks, but even George Clooney started on The Facts of Life… Wait, that analogy doesn’t work because The Facts of Life was the best show ever.

Cliff Lee – 8 IP, 2 ER, 8 baserunners, 9 Ks.  The Adverb got through the Mets like a subject and predicate.  It’s about time The Adverb started modifying things.

Carlos Ruiz – 2-for-4 and Chooch went deep for the 2nd time in as many games.  After the game, Ruiz said, “That’s how Chooch makes it rain.”  Then he galloped around the clubhouse on a mop horsie in nothing but a jockstrap saying, “Chooch-chooch rain!”

Chase Utley – 1-for-5 and his 2nd homer.  That’s nice, he’s also skipping games left and right and he’s been less valuable than about 20 other 2nd basemen according to our 7 day Player Rater.  His name, over-the-internet friend, is a lot more vaulable than his reality.

Scott Hairston – 1-for-4 with his 11th homer as he hits .254.  He’s like jarred salsa.  He’s not that hot, and he may still give you indigestion.

Ryan Zimmerman – Him and Michael Morse hit back-to-back homers and they hit them right after Bryce Harper batted.  Sorry, trying to reach a wider audience.

Jhonatan Solano – 2-for-4 with a slam & legs.  You know how when you type a query into Google, you get a string of suggestions?  I can say without a doubt that when I typed in Jhonatan, I had no idea any of the other suggestions.  Solano’s shown the ability to hit for a decent average, but he has little to no power.  Outside of deep two catcher leagues, I wouldn’t go near him.

Anthony Rizzo – 2-for-4 as he hit his 3rd homer, and Bryan LaQuad-A… I mean, Matt LaStairs… Excuse me, Bryan OurAffairIsOver also hit a homer.

Adam Wainwright – 6 IP, 1 ER, 9 baserunners, 7 Ks.  This comes on the heels of him being Vin Mazzacred by the Pirates.  I didn’t want in on Wainwright coming into the season, but I did think by now he’d be easier to own.  After a 3.00 ERA May, his June ERA was 5.21.   Hopefully, July goes the way of May and June finds out about April and tells her to March.

Dee Gordon – 1-for-3 with 2 steals while batting .229, but he left the game with a dislocated thumb.  They should check by where he left his average.  He’ll probably be out for 10 days.  May not be DL’d because of the ASB.  He can now be a late write-in for the DL All-Star Game.  But someone else will need to write it in.

Mike Leake – 7 IP, 2 ER, 6 baserunners, 5 Ks.  Since May 14th, he hasn’t given up more than 4 earned runs in a game and he’s lowered his ERA from 6.21 to 4.01.  Yup.

Justin Verlander – 9 IP, 1 ER, 5 baserunners, 7 Ks.  Is it only me or is it surprising that Verlander only has 6 career shutouts?  Doesn’t feel like he throws one at least once a month?

Miggy Cabrera – 3-for-3, 3 runs, 3 RBIs and 2 homers, now hitting .323.  Just a hair under his BAC.

Elliot Johnson – 2-for-4 and his 2nd steal in as many games.  Elllllllliiiiiot… Beeeeeee gooooood and steal.

Carlos Pena – 1-for-2 with a slam & legs.  He’s taking to this two hole hitter thing.  Next thing you know he’s going to be dropping a bunt down the line, sliding head first into the first base bag and asking the 1st baseman to get things down for him off a high shelf.

David Price – 7 IP, 1 ER, 6 baserunners, 8 Ks vs. the Yankees to lower his ERA to 2.82.  Here’s the Jewish Yankee fans watching yesterday’s game, “Hey, Herb, isn’t David Price the name of Bubbe’s grandson?”  “No, it’s Ben, and his bris is this weekend.”  “The guy in right field?”  “Speak up, I can’t hear you over the air conditioner.”

Would you trade Detwiler for Callaspo? 20 teams.
Another great podcast. I share your disbelief over Belt frequently being benched. Apparently Bochy has an aversion to red hot bats who play world class defense and who can reach base more often than anyone else on the team. Bochy wouldn’t play Posey either until Sabean forced his hand by trading away the across the board inferior, Bengie Molina.

  3. Trevor Bauer and Brandon Blech could probably start a poop face whiners club together. with the amount of pouting those two dudes contribute to the weekly body of mlb broadcasts i figure there’s got to be some kind of money in it–why else would they go around looking so sad all the time? certainly it isn’t because Blech is drifting out of Bochy’s orbit like the lost little planet and Bauer has come to realize that his pole-to-pole gun show only scared hitters at the college level… certainly, no.

on an unrelated and mormon note, at first all this Harper mania was excusable to some minor extent. i am officially having negative physical repercussions. whilst watching the highlight reel a few minutes ago i was interrupted by a completely not-baseball clip documenting Harper’s all star bid which, much to my dismay, caused me to choke on a formidable mouthful of cinnamon toast crunch.. jesus h, is he the new lana del ray? (note: lana del ray is the most boring superstar yet; her dearth of talents is a perfect complement to her horsey visage… nothing like a sparkly dress to distract the eyes. anyway, the comparison to ms. del ray doesn’t fit like, say, a glove… but its the first cynical thing that came to mind.)

Guessing we’ll be able to tell by your recent comments, either you’ll be saying “about time” etc or it’ll be, “why couldn’t you friggin do this when I owned him”!

So Beachy was dropped in my dynasty league when it was made known that he’d be done for the year. I currently have Santos and Howard in my DL spots. Although Howard is due back soon, is Santos still the guy in Toronto when he gets back? I got Valverde, Jansen, and Rodney for saves, plus League in case Wilhelmsen falters. Think Beachy can return to form next year or pass?

Also, I have an offer that’s been on the shelf for a couple days, his Fister for my Lincecum. When he first offered it, it was right after a good Timmy start so I wanted to hold off to see if I could get more value. After the bad Timmy start, I’d probably take anything for him. This guy is obsessed with the Giants and practically has the whole team on his roster. Satisfy this guy’s fantasy boner and take Fister?

Hope you had a great 4th!

Looking for roster help and at a few on the wire that might be worthy of an add. Any suggestions looking at my lineup? I’m favoring dropping Chris Nelson for either Daniel Murphy, Colvin, G. Jones, Amarista, B. Moss, Ruggiano. Thoughts?

    10-team H2H, OBP & SLG, no AVG.

    C Wieters
    1B Pujols
    2B Espinosa
    2B/SS Altuve
    SS Furcal
    3B Moustakas
    1B/3B Rizzo
    LF Prado
    CF Hamilton
    RF Bruce
    OF Kubel
    OF De Aza
    UTIL Ortiz
Bench Pierzynski, Soriano, Belt, C. Nelson

Another idea is dropping Nelson for a RP because Axford sucks, but not a whole lot on the wire at RP that is trustworthy.

    Liriano vs OAK
    F Morales @ TB
    Doubront @ TB
    Colon @ MIN
    Floyd vs KC

Appreciate the help! I just listened to the first 5 minutes of yesterday’s podcast (I’ll finish it later today) – I can’t wait for Stephen Hawking!

Also, if Nick was really 7 of 9′s personal assistant, you should get her on! Sure she knows nothing of baseball, but her accusations of sex club shenanigans against her then husband caused him to withdraw from the senate race he was involved in… against Barack Obama! (Who cruised to a 70-30% victory against stand in Alan Keyes) Conspiracy? I’m sure you and Rudy talking all over each other could get it out of her!

Hello there Grey…hope you had a nice 4th. And by “4th” I’m obviously referring to the production you hopefully got from your 4th outfielder yesterday. Anyhoo! …I have a few questions coming at you today, but the first concerns my pitching staff and DL. Here’s my staff:

SPs – Greinke, Hanson, Anibal, Lynn, Bauer, Cahill, Gee, Cashner
    RPs – Perez, Casilla, Wilhelmsen

    DL – Santos, McCarthy

    —————

I only get two DL slots, so I’m thinking mighty heavily about dropping Santos to put Cashner on the DL and thus free up a slot for a pickup. I read a news blurb today noting that the Blue Jays have said Santos’s late-July estimated return is off and he is without a timetable. Sooo, are you ok with that move? If so, my thought was to use the open roster slot to stream Norris today at Pittsburgh and then drop him to stream Milone tomorrow at home vs. Seattle. You good with all that, or did I just foolishly paint a farfetched scenario in my brain?

I’m counting the Giancarlo blurb as an Innerspace reference. Paired with a Throw Momma from the Train shout out? Yeah, this post gets an A for “Awesome.”

B the dub, I don’t think Snow had dreads, did he? I recall him having a short cut and those circle rimmed glasses, but I could be wrong. I tried to look it up, but if I search “what does snow look like” google responds “your ISP is in New York… you know damn well what snow looks like!” I think it’s finally become self-aware… I just hope the apocalypse is more like Maximum Overdrive than Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.”

Hello again Grey! Thanks for answering my earlier question. This represents the second installment of Producer George Lucas’s newly released fantasy baseball question trilogy, directed by Chillmodious!….I appreciate your patience (as always) because this is a bit confusing:

I know your aversion to carrying two catchers in a 1-catcher league (12tm, H2H, 5×5, ESPN), so suspend disbelief for a moment and humor me here… I am rostering Chooch and loving it. I also have a regular lineup of starters with no offensive players on the bench. Due to some DL possibilities with my pitchers, I may now have the opportunity to add a bench bat / getaway day fill-in player. I was thinking about adding Sal Perez–with the logic that Chooch usually gets 2 days off per week, there’s probably at least one other day each week I could slot Perez in as a utility player (getaway day for another player), Perez has been on fire, and when you forget about his position his stats are better than just about any available option on my wire. I also know that he won’t be available much longer in my league. Further bolstering my cognitive dissonance is the fact that a top-tier catcher is generally tough to replace with another off the wire, so if Chooch should go down for any length of time I’d be looking at some AJ Ellis action. Perhaps most important, though, is the fact that Perez has been on fire.

So, all that said, does this sound OK? Or should I just move on to other concerns?

    Many thanks.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Sounds okay, but I don’t know who you could add besides Perez…

      • Chillmodious says:
        (link)

@Grey, For offensive purposes, the only other options would be JD Martinez (who’s hot-ish right now but generally inconsistent) and Tyler Colvin. Otherwise, it would be another pitching arm to stream/play matchups. Putting aside his torrid production lately, my lean towards Perez has a lot to do with the dearth of respectable catchers out there and a neurotic desire to have some insurance at a thin position (if Chooch gets injured or regresses, etc.).

        Does that change your opinion?

          Grey says:
          (link)

          @Chillmodious, Colvin…

later , crawford told the guy that he initially thought that he had broken

obviously , this was just some hyperbole , on crawford’s part , to indicate

  69. Hi Grey — This playing time stuff has me about to drop Belt, even in my 16-team 5×5 redraft roto league where I have plenty of depth where Belt can get slotted in (I already have Bruce, Rizzo, Rasmus, Victorino, Stubbs, and sometimes Howie Kendrick for the 3 OF and 1 UTIL slot, with Berkman expected off the DL soon). What’s the best strategy?

    A) Grab a hot bat like Amarista, Ruggiano, Tyler Colvin, Aoki, or Logan Morrison, knowing they’d have to displace some of the above names to start?

    B) (and I write this one knowing your philosophical aversion to carrying catchers), pick up John Buck, Derek Norris, or Lou Marson so I can bench Jesus Montero through the all-star break, given that Jesus probably won’t play any of those games anyway and then hope he comes out of the break ready to go?

    C) Sit tight with Belt?

And a second question in the same league: Who is the best streamer for tomorrow between Jake Westbrook (MIA), Collmenter (LAD), Cobb (@CLE), or Nolasco (@STL)? I know you’ve noted that Nolasco usually pitches well in July and seems poised to do it again, but his personal stats against the Cards give me pause.

    Grey-

I’m this close to accepting a-gon and cj Wilson for pujols and fister. I’m so nervous about losing my second overall pick though. I’m in first place trading with second place team in a 12 team redraft league. Are you sure that is enough for pujols? Make me press accept!!! Lol

    Thanks

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

@Steven, It’s enough, but if you’re in first you’re doing something right already, so why mess with it? I.e., hold…

  77. Jhonatan Solano sounds like one of your name amalgamations. I don’t believe he is a real boy.

Of course, what terrible player mash would that be? Peralta, Betancourt, Soto and Soriano? Hey, maybe he is a frankenstein’s monster with very light power.

@Grey, Dammit! Didn’t get to my roster in time to bench Porcello. Oh well.

How do you feel about Collmenter at home tomorrow vs the Artless Dodgers? I could use the Ks…

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @Abdoozy, I don’t love Collmenter, but that’s a decent matchup…

      • Abdoozy says:
        (link)

@Grey, Curious, are you just psychic or what? What was it about Porcello that you didn’t like? He’d had a few good starts and seemed to be righting the ship, he was at home, it was the twins. Other unnamed and clearly inferior experts liked him.

After giving up 13 BR in 3.2, with 0 Ks, he’s on my perma-shit list.

        • MattTruss223 says:
          (link)

@Abdoozy, He’s a witch! But really it’s prolly the 5 K/9 and 1.49 WHIP that Grey doesn’t care for. You can’t have that WHIP w/o striking guys out.

What do you think of this trade?

    Send Alexei Ramirez, CWS SS
    Send Glen Perkins, Min RP
    Receive Alexi Amarista, SD 2B
    Receive Chris Sale SP/RP

Chris Sale will ride my bench and will not pitch for me unless he gets moved to the bullpen or Jason Hammel gets hurt or loses his abilities.
I have my RP slots filled with Hanrahan, Casilla, Marmol, and Papelbon and Perkins is riding my Bench.

My team has a 2B slot, a SS slot, and a 2B/SS slot.
I have the following players who can play 2B. Marco Scutaro and Ruben Tejada
I have the following players who can play SS. Scutaro, Tejada, Jed Lawrie as well as the wanted Ramirez.

    Ideas?? My current OFer’s are

Rios, CarGo, Bruce, Heyward, Bautista, Jennings, (Boneface when he comes off the DL – unless he replaces Alexei Ramirez). I have thought about picking up Ruggiano or a 2nd baseman to fill in for Uggla while he struggles (Neil Walker is available). Another option would be Brad Linoln or James Russell so they could fill a SP spot as a RP.

Any thoughts on direction? I have a spot to pick someone up without dropping anyone else.

@Grey, Love the story about him pulling his pants down after sliding in to 1st. Think I might have even seen that on the CNN sports news that day it happened.

That was back in the day when they had Fred Hickman and (the late) Nick Charles doing it, with the occasional cameo from Van Earl Wright. Remember them?

Oh – and loved Elijah’s Fleetwood Mac reference yesterday. You like the Mac? You like you some Eagles, so I’m assuming yes…

Wow. Alvarez looked so good for 2 innings. Then he didn’t get a 3rd-strike call, and everything went wrong. Didn’t get hit that hard, but 5 runs and over 40 pitches in the 3rd.

Adam Dunn leads all of baseball with the most pitches per plate appearance at 4.54, a somewhat sizable lead over the next guy.

He also leads MLB in strikeouts.

I didn’t even know that was possible.

    Grey,

Trade my Votto for Texeira and Gallardo? It’s a redraft h2h 5×5 category league. I seem to lose batting average category all the time and still in first so I’m thinking I can give up Votto’s stellar average because the R, RBI and HR will likely be equal w/ Tex and I get Gallardo who should have his typically good second half (needed because my pitching is weak). Pull the trigger or keep riding Votto?

    Thanks!

      • Cahhhhh-stanza says:
        (link)

@Grey, agree. They are just playing ugly baseball.
Too many bottom of the roster guys playing major innings.
I mean, when was Ty Wigginton any good? This guy has been
with 6 or 7 teams, and he is the definition on mediocre. He never gets
a clutch hit, but always hits in big innings when it is not needed.
Michael Martinez, should be a career minor leaguer, not even good enough
to make quad AAAA. Mayberry, the dude just can’t play. He will discover
himself 5 years from now as a San Diego Padre. Hunter Pence is a Butcher in the outfield. Juan Pierre was the last guy to make the roster out of spring training, and now he is the most consistent hitter behind Chooch. And they finally have a chance to win a series, turn it over to Papelbon, and he totally shits the bed. So hard to watch after the last 5 years.

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

Yeah, they’re a last place team… They got old real fast…

        • Cahhhhh-stanza says:
          (link)

          @Cahhhhh-stanza,

And don’t even get me started on Chad Friggin Qualls. If you discount the year he spent at Petco, he hasn’t pitched well since 2009. An the Yankees go and pick him up, don’t they watch the highlights on MLB.TV

So the Phillies plan this year was to rely on two young home grown relief guys who leaked oil all the way to the finish line last year, Bastardo and Stutes. Sign Qualls for late inning insurance, and hope Jose Contreras and his 48 year old arm can make it through another season. While overpaying for Papelbon, with no way to get the game from the starters to Papelbon. Brilliant! Just friggin brilliant.

            Grey says:
            (link)

You sound like a Philly fan, so let me ask you something… Is the organization just done with Domonic?

            • Cahhhhh-stanza says:
              (link)

@Grey, I think they would like him to get red hot in AAA Lehigh Valley, and move him. But everytime he gets hot, he get injured.
They say he was supposed to be a 5 tool player, but the scout who thought he could field at the major league level should be fired. He has a great arm, great speed, but can’t track a flyball. They have moved him to LF hoping he can play well enough to create interest. But with the major league team losing, it’s a good bet they will try to move pieces before the trade deadline, namely Victorino.

Soooo, with no LF on the major league roster since they traded Raul, and Victorino traded, that would only leave Pence back next year. They may have no choice but to give Brown another shot. And if they move Victorino before the deadline, Brown may be up before the September callup. Mainly because Mayberry has been exposed when facing righties, barely hitting above the Mendoza line. That has shaken the confidence he had (last year) versus lefties, and now he just looks like an out of place minor leaguer.

              • Grey

                Grey says:
                (link)

So they haven’t lose faith in Domonic, they just don’t have room?

    Sooooooo Santiago Casilla…what’s his deal? Last 6 appearances: 4.1 innings, 11 hits, 3 BB, 6 ER, 2 HR, 2 SV, 3 BS, 2 L…that’s a 12.46 ERA and 3.23 WHIP

Think SF will be moving on to Romo, who on the other hand has given up 2 runs on the season?

    • Grey

      Grey says:

Cause Rudy just traded him… He’s having a charmed season… I don’t think they want Romo closing games, but anything’s possible…

            @Grey, He’s 4th, I’m 6th – but he’s got Holliday and Hamilton having pretty weeks, plus Weiters.

I’ve got lots of guys hitting over .300 but not producing much else and Bum and Richards have really killed me in ERA.

            • Steve says:

@Steve, CarGo currently .312/.389 but with no runs scored,. no RBIs, no home runs and no stolen bases…
