Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

It was about a half year ago that Grey threw all his chips into the pot on Marco Estrada.  Man-crushed him onto just about every team we co-manage (along with the deviated septumet) as well as his Razzball Commenter League team.  Well, this looked like a lost season for ol’ Marco when he went on the Disgraceful List in early June while sporting a 5.32/1.36 in 69 IP.  Combined with Ryan Braun’s suspension and the inevitable 2nd half regressions for Gomez/Segura, Milwaukee has been as relevant to fantasy baseball fans as the city is for travelers intolerant of lactose, cheap domestic beer, and drag queens masquerading as a young Penny Marshall.  Under this shroud of yawnonymity, Marco Estrada’s season is beginning to rise from the ashes like Bud Selig’s toupee at that fateful windy hometown barbecue that’s now annually celebrated as Furrywurst Day.  Estrada went 7 IP in a tough matchup (@CIN) and gave up 3 baserunners (1 H, 2 BB) and K’d 9 Reds.  That’s his 3rd solid start in his last 4 and that includes an @TEX + home vs. STL.  He’s definitely worth a pickup for the homestretch if only to see if he can pitch well enough to convince Grey to double down on Estrada in 2014.

In other news…

Miguel Cabrera – He had another great weekend (7-for-14, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 3 Runs).  He’s now sporting a line of .360/93/42/128/3 with a .450 OBP.  If you are like me and you have Miggy on none of your teams because you didn’t draft 1st/2nd (or didn’t bid a gazillion at auction), here’s one thing that’ll make you feel better.  Imagine how much it would suck if you lost with that stat line on your team?  (Apologies to those of you in this camp).

Matt Kemp – Expected back in early September from his ankle injury.  Whew – because the Dodgers are sucking without him.  I think he’s coming back to stink for 20 games and wrest the Fantasy LVP away from Ryan Braun.  One thing’s for sure – if he loses that award to Braun, he’s going to blame PEDs for that too.

Troy Tulowitzki – Missed Sunday with soreness in his side.  No news on whether he’ll be fine on Monday or out for the year or somewhere in between.  He’s at 99 games so fingers crossed if you bet the under on 100 games for Tulo in 2013.  He should come out with a Tulo Whiskey and set the proof at the number of game he played in the previous year.  You never know if you’re going to get everclear (2009-2011) or a 6-pack of wine coolers (2012).

Jake Peavy – Threw a complete game, 1 ER, 4 baserunner, 5 K masterpiece @LAD.  Jake then slapped around Alyssa Milano until she admitted that the Dodgers were both her “brothers” and her “sons”.

Justin Ruggiano – Went for the slam (#15) and legs (#13) as he shares some sort of blahtoon with Jake Marisnick.  Might be worth wheeling this hunk of cheese out there if he’s starting against a weak lefty.

Mike Napoli –  2-for-4 with a 2B, HR, 2 R and 3 RBI as his season kind of yawns on from the 27 RBI April.  Too much partying in the North End is what I’m thinking.

Jorge De La Rosa –  Won his 14th (?!) of the year against the Marlins and has a 3.28 ERA.  There’s definitely some luck there with a 1.35 WHIP and mediocre K-rate (about 6 K/9) but, as fellow Jorge (George Jones) sang,  ‘It’s been a good year por de la rosa‘).

AJ Pollock –  3-for-4 with 3 RBI and the slam (#7) and legs (#9) hitting 5th while a bunch of the lineup got the day off after Saturday’s 18 inning marathon.  He’s a marginal Hittertron play against lefties at home because he’s generally batting at the top of the lineup.  Even if his constant Columbo and Shatner impressions get old quickly.

Tony Campana –  Started both Saturday and Sunday @PHI, got on 3 times, and 0 SBs (got picked off once).  Did he leave his lucky SAGNOF underwear back in Arizona?  Was he afraid Chrissy from Masterchef was going to stop by the locker room, see the SAGNOF boxers and misconstrue what the N stood for?

Patrick Corbin –  5.1 IP, 8 ER, 10 baserunners @PHI against a lineup where Erik Kratz hit cleanup.  He’s 33 and has 17 career HRs.  He doesn’t hit cleanup at the Kratz family softball picnic.  Given Corbin just pitched a complete game @CIN his last start (2 ER, 10 K), I wouldn’t just assume he’s hitting a rookie wall but 177 IP sure seems like a lot…

Roy Halladay – Pitched solid for the win (6 IP, 2 ER, 6 baserunners, 2 Ks) and trimmed his ERA from 8.65 to 7.81.  Ruben Amaro Jr. signed him to a 5-year extension after the game.

Josh Reddick –  Injured his right wrist for the 3rd time this season and likely headed to the DL again.  If they have to immobilize his wrist for a significant period of time, he might have to change his name from Reddick to Blueballs.

Travis D’Arnaud – Hit his 1st MLB HR on Sunday night – the first Frenchy HR for the Mets since Francouer in 2010.  He has the perfect last name in case he ever gets caught with PEDs – whatever the question, just reply “I D’Arnaud”

Nate McLouth – 2-for-5 with a 2B, HR (#9), 2 RBIs and a CS.  The 2 RBIs now gives him 27 RBIs compared to 29 SBs.  Juan Pierre approves this stat line.

Nick Markakis – 2-for-4 with a 2B and HR (#9).  He broke a tie in HRs with Ryan Flaherty who has 300 less ABs this year than the man formerly known as Sparkakis.  Must be tough hitting for power while working for your druglord uncle at nights.

Sonny Gray –  3 1/3 IP, 6 ER, 10 baserunners in a rough matchup @BAL.  More gray than sunny but he’s a must start for now when pitching at the big O.

Todd Frazier – 0-for-4 and Frazier goes down to .232/48/13/57/0.  Sad to see a fellow New Jerseyan struggle like that – especially one from Point Pleasant where Grey and I used to cruise the boardwalk.  Looks doubtful he’ll ever pass the seemingly retired Kirsten Dunst on the ‘most famous person from Point Pleasant‘ list.  And Dusty hitting the struggling Frazier #2 in the lineup only dishonors the brilliance of the #2 sub at Jersey Mike’s whose CEO – Peter Cancro – is also from Point Pleasant.

Matt Joyce –  1-for-4 hitting cleanup on Sunday.  In his last 4 starts, though, he has 2 2Bs, 2 HRs, and 6 RBIs.  Worth streaming against RHPs as you amuse yourself watching MLB Gameday shouting “Joyce, do it!” every time he’s hitting.

Jeff Baker – Feasted on the White Sox weekend diet of LHPs with HRs on Friday and Sunday.  He now has 10 HRs in 75 ABs vs. LHPs this year and 2 XBHs in 46 ABs against RHP.   Him and David Murphy would’ve made a perfect platoon this year if Murphy hadn’t sucked balls (289 ABs against RHP this year netted .218 AVG, .283 OBP, and 11 HRs).

Chia-Jen Lo – Got the save on Saturday for the Astros but went all Mitch Williams on Sunday (2 ER on 1 H, 3 BB).  C-Lo blamed the Sunday loss on a distressing downtown sighting of his girlfriend in, of all places, another man’s car.

Mike Minor –  Rebounded from his 1.2 IP start against Washington with a 7 IP, 1 ER, 7 baserunner outing @STL.  Maybe Minor earned some redemption against the usually offensive Cardinals but I chalk this start up to bad kozma.

Ryan Vogelsong –  8 IP, 0 ER, 3 baserunners, 5 Ks at home vs. PIT.  And you can tell everybody, it’s Vogelsong!

Will Venable –  Went 3-for-4 with a HR in both the Friday/Saturday games against CHC (with a SB) but managed only 1-for-6 in the Sunday extra inning affair.  Here are the monthly values from his Player Page:  $-1.2, $11.7, $-1.1, $-1.9, $40.2 .  He’s now on pace for a 20/20 year.  Un-frigin-bevenable.

Jered Weaver – Easily handled the Mariners (8 IP, 0 ER, 3 baserunners, 8 Ks) as he seems fully recovered from the 9 ER shellacking by the Yanks two starts ago.  When interviewed after the game, Weaver said, “One old man (Ibanez) I can handle.  But the Yankees just keep attacking you with these old guys who are just chomping their dentures to hit a sub-90 MPH fastball.  I was rattled from the second Ichiro garbled, ‘I smell tapioca pudding’ when he got into the batter’s box.”

Omar Infante – Had 7 hits in the weekend series and is hitting almost .400 since returning from injury in early August. All 19 of his hits have been singles and they’ve netted 6 runs and 3 RBI. I hope he’s paying proper royalties to Placido Polanco for this MI empty average. Guess the lack of power is in the names. Placid(o), Infant(e). I’m just glad that Gyork isn’t Icelandic for peaceful baby.

    Hey Rudy

Need some help. Im in first place heading into the last week of the season in a 10 team h2h before the playoffs. Currently trying to set up my pitching staff and make any necessary changes. Here is my staff and some options available on the wire. Let me know if you would make any changes. Let me also preface this by saying Niese is completely expendable, just picked him up for his 2 start week.

My starters: Harvey, Bumgardner, Gio, Miller, Lester, Garza, Niese, Wood, Buchholz (DL)

    Estrada vLAA, @CHC, @STL, vCHC, vSTL, @NYM
Halladay @CHC, vWAS, vSD, vMIA, vNYM, @ATL
    Salazar @ATL, @DET, vNYM, @CHW, @KC, vHOU, @MIN

    • bossmanjunior says:
      (link)

      @bossmanjunior:

Cashner, Vogelsong, Perez, Kluber, McAllister also available.

    • @bossmanjunior: I like Halladay’s schedule way more than the other guys – probably enough that he might be the best bet of the 3. Although Salazar has a pretty sweet last two starts. I’d probably hang tight on your current SPs with Niese and Shelby having the shortest leashes. I’d also drop Wood too if he’s got a bad matchup that week.

I wonder what kind of pie they serve on Furrywurst Day?

10-team 5×5 redraft. I need runs, HR and SB. I have Byrd, Lawrie, Rajai, AJax, Lake.

Myers and Schierholtz just hit the wire, joining M Dominguez, D Murphy, Hoes.

I’m dropping Lake for Myers on waivers. Any other moves to make?

If you haven’t seen it, Nate Schierholtz’s 12th inning run scoring grounder to first is one of the great Cubs plays of all time. Twists ankle trying to come out of the box and falls down, then as he’s rising from the dirt gets hit right in the face with the throw home. Everybody’s safe!

  8. Frank White says:

Hey Rudy whats up… I’m in a 10 team h2h points mixed league but every team is filled to the rim with pitchers. Anyway I clinched the playoffs plus the buy week. Do you think I should hold onto Sonny Gray through playoffs?? My Pitching is-
    Masterson
    Gio Gonz
    Iwakuma
    Martin Perez
    Shelby Miller
    Sonny Gray
    Chris Archer
    Latos
    Halladay
    Alex Wood
    Matt Cain
    Streamer spot
If this were your pitching squad, what changes would you make??

    • @Frank White: Yes, I’d hold onto Sonny Gray. All these SPs could realistically have solid matchups so no one seems like an obvious cut. I’d be gunshy on Perez though. Hard to say more w/o knowing what’s on the waiver wire.

Sorry for long post but it’s crunch time. 5×5, weekly league. I’m locked in a fierce battle for WHIP (I’m in 1st), ERA (1st), wins (1st), AND saves (2nd) with my main competitor right behind me in the first 3 so a lead change is a 2 point swing. We start 7 pitchers regardless of SP/RP so every week I’m trying to decide between more SPs (for potential wins) or more closers (for better ERA, WHIP, and saves). He punted saves a long time ago so he starts 7 SPs every week. He has 10 starts this week to my 4-5 so his takeover of wins might be inevitable over the next 5 weeks. No idea how to finish up my rotation this week:

Scherzer vs Oak (SON 24.3) is my sure thing.
Liriano vs StL (15.2) I’ll take that
    Burnett (16.4) ok, him too
    Bum @ Col (2.9) blech
    Garza vs Minn (12.9) I’m guessing… 4ER?
    Gray vs Tampa (3.7)
    Salazar @ Atl (10.1) and @ Det (5.1)
Halladay @ Cubs (not listed on SON???)
My closers: Jansen, Holland, Romo, Farquhar

Right now I have in Scherzer, Liriano, AJ, Bum, Holland, Jansen, Farquhar.

    1) Leave 4 Sps or go with 5? (or more?)
    2) Which other 1/2 SPs to start? Bum in Col???
    3) If starting 4 SPs, do I go with Romo or Farquhar for 3rd closer?

Again, sorry for the novella. Won’t do it again… until next Monday where I write the whole thing over again. Thanks dude

Hey Rudy, thanks for the post! 16 team H2H points league.

Thoughts on Halladay’s start vs the cubs this week? What about Gray vs TB?

Also, Frazier seems to be at the end of his rope… I picked up Donnie Murphy for last week, would you be starting him over Frazier from now on, platooning, or looking to waivers (Dominguez, Cody Asche). It’d be helpful to cut one, but I’m worried about frazier picking it up again as soon as I drop him.

First off thanks for the help the last few weeks. I’m in a H2H league, we play 6 teams each week. 12 team league. I am 3 games back of the 4th place team and need to catch him. So with that in mind I have to take a shot or two with some iffy two start guys. We already made our roster moves.. Here are my starters. Deffinites…Felix,Wainwright,Zimmerman and Garza. my two start choices. Lyons (Cinn,Leake) @ Pitt(Locke) I trust that team for some reason. McCarthy has two home starts (SD,Ross) (SF,Zito) Eovaldi (@wash,Ohlendorff) (@ATL.Wood) . Finally AJ Griffin. (@DET Sanchez) (@ Tampa) Hate throwing anyone against Detroit, especially this guy. I also have Danny Salazar, but he seems to get pulled after 75 pitches regardless, and in a H2H league he does me little good. I’m leaning towards Lyons and McCarthy…. Last quickie… which Brewer do I start K.Davis or Carlos Gomez. Thanks again ….

@Grey: I know they all suck….It’s the last week of the reg season. I don’t have a good enough offense to rely on 6 starts, not that I have any great one start options to fill those two slots anyway. Sonny Gray at Tampa or Salazar at Atlanta. I’m just hoping both get two starts and neither blow up.

  34. Hey Rudy – I’m currently 6th in Wins in my league (10 team, 10 keeper), but there is a 6-Win gap between myself and the 2nd place team, so there are points to be made up.

I have a comfortable lead in both ERA & WHIP & feel like I need to stream the sh*t out of the final month for W’s. No idea whom to drop, though. I’ve got a 10 save cushion on the next guy (who has 4 closers), and the guy who’s 3 behind him (who has 5), but I’m sure they’d gobble one up if I dropped one.

I was half hoping Weaver would bomb yesterday so I could cut bait and stream, but now I’m not sure.

Here’s the staff, obviously with some untouchables:

    Harvey
    Scherzer
    Kuroda
    Latos
    Weaver
    Hamels

    and CLs:
    Jansen
    Jannsseenn
    Farquhar
    Perkins
    Koji

    Any advice would be appreciated!

    Shout-out to West Campus

@Sheriff McRawDawg: Allston? T’s? I’d prefer to hold them all… But if I had to drop a guy to stream it would be Farquhar

      • @Grey: the same. also home to the world famous right-across-the-street-Wednesday-night-sweatpants-karaoki bar, Kayuga.

        Sleeper Hall all day.

I suppose Danny boy might also be the ‘least pickup-able’ of my relievers to drop, based on surface stats and perception but I like the K’s and he’s been lights out lately.. I feel like Jannsseeenn might be more deserving of the axe?

    • @Sheriff McRawDawg: Those are 6 solid SPs. I’d rather dump Farquhar to open up a streaming spot. Just contact someone in your league who isn’t in Saves contention and ask that they put in a waiver claim or whatever your league is set up as.

      • @Rudy Gamble: @Rudy Gamble: thanks man. yeah so this is my first year in this league and all the owners are pretty chummy with each other, so no idea how that would go down. worth a shot tho, definitely. Maybe Jannsseeenn over Farquhar?

Start 9 pitchers, set lineup weekly, and am 2nd in ERA/WHIP and 7th in Ks though it’s really close in all 3 categories. Am 7 behind 1st in wins and 12 behind 1st in saves. I got Kimbrel, Kenley, Koji, Farquhar for closers. Team 1st in saves also has 4 closers (Cishek, Rivera, Rodney, Reed) but team in 2nd has 5 (Gregg, Benoit, Nathan, Melancon, Balfour). This week I’m benching Farquhar and going 2 start Eovaldi, Lester, Kersh, Waino, Nolasco, Delgado vs Giants. Would you bench Uehera for Hector Santiago at BoSox cuz of need to catchup in wins and Ks and just go Kimbrel/Kanley this week? Also I start LoMo and Morneau at 1st and Utility, Gyorko at 2nd, Seager 3rd, Lowrie SS (lost Ecab RIP), Kelly Johnson MI. I benched Headley finally for Chris Carter at CI (need HRs). Gonna keep Gyorko in even when Uggla comes back. Would you keep benching Headley and playing Carter and even cut him in favor of Dominguez/Mostsuckass/Donnie Murphy?

    Jason Castro (against a righty!)
    A-Rod

Matt Joyce (against a righty also!)

thoughts on keepers for next year, keep 4. lose a pick in the round you took them. FA adds are round 22

    Harper – 1
    Machado – 10
    Segura – 22
    D Brown – 22
    JoFer – 22
    Matt Carpenter – 22

If I don’t keep Carpenter, where do you think he should be drafted next year as a 2B?

@Grey: Thanks so much. Kinda what I’m also thinking. Was toying with the idea of flipping Carp and D. Brown for Crush Davis in the 14th. Do you think he’s having an outlier of a year or do you see him continuing for the next few years as a .280 hitter with 40/120 potential?

In a nutshell who’s side you on?
        Davis (14) or DBrown/Carp (22’s)

Great stuff, Rudy. Loved the Amaro comment. I’m sure everyone except Phillies fans thought it was funny (they probably had to do a quick search to see whether or not you were joking).

I gave my endorsement of Baker yesterday for a two-day pickup to face the mediocre lefty duo of Danks and Saunders. Like you mentioned in the writeup, he kills lefties, especially guys with average stuff (7/16 w/ 2 HRs vs Saunders).

Anyone looking for a middle infielder on this short schedule day might want to consider Brandon Crawford. He’s in Coors facing Nicasio, who he’s 4/8 against. Might be good for a three day run too. Faces all righties for that series – Bettis tomorrow (never faced) and Chacin on Wednesday (6/19 w/ 3 RBIs lifetime).

Obviously Cespedes is slumping and has the harder matchups, but Seager has been scuffling too lately, and doesn’t do as well against Lefties (He faces 5 of them!).

The key categories I’m looking for are RBI’S and AVERAGE. Steals would be nice too.

@Gareth: If the A’s Lose all 7 games this week (which is conceivable), and my Team the Indians have a good week then they could gain ground for that 5th Wildcard spot. So in a way I hope the Tigers do us a Favor. The Indians also have a tough schedule this week though:

Re: Miggy – imagine how much it would suck if you were crushing your division/league, then the bottomest of the bottom feeder teams sold all his top talent to your division rival (Miggy, Stras, Lackey, Fowler) for pennies on the dollar, then you watched your 20+ game division lead vanish within 5 weeks. Now imagine that this is my reality. Fuck.

I’ve got two moves left on the season, but I’m limping into the playoffs now. 3 games behind the new division leader. I need pitching help, as I’ve got Kluber still shelved (holding) and Straily shooting blanks.

Out of this group, who would you go with for ROS: Niese, Vogelson, Estrada, McAllister, Morton, Danks, Pettite, E. Ramirez, M. Gonzalez, Cahill, Jimenez, Santiago.. league counts QS and IP.

This is life and death. And possibly $1,000 to the winner of the league. No pressure. Thanks!

I know you’re hot around the collar for Estrada.. but how crucial do you think it is that I make a move for him? Out of the 6 playoff teams left, only 1 has more than 1 move left.

Also, if I sit Straily this week and my opponent has Harvey’s start skipped – I’m looking at 8 starts vs. 8 starts. I’m basically locked in the 4 seed, unless I win 3 points more than the leader to take my division back and win my $150 entry fee back. It’s pretty unlikely, though. Hooray lopsided trades!

with injuries to Cingrani, Martin, Marte (Moore is supposed to be back next week) i’m wondering if i should hang on to any or all of these guys (Playoffs could potentially rin through September 29th–otherwise i have 2 weeks in the regular season left.

    1. Should i let an injured Cingrani loose for a Wheeler or other active pitcher with good matchups?
    2. Is it time to let Garza and that shit hanging off his chin, loose for a better option?
    3. Are Marte and/or Martin worth hanging on to though their injuries? i on,ly have one DL slot and until Moore returns, he’s it.

I added Gattis for Power and Rbi’s in a solid Braves offense. He now had playing time open up for him due to Heywards injury. However I checked the box scores last night and saw some hilariously named Shmo called TURDOSLAVICH was playing in LF instead of him yesterday. So I dropped him for Sal Perez at the last minute.

If he keeps job and does well fowler (this is net steals league) gets the bench. Man i have too many CF or LF guys.

Harvey has his sports illustrated model to console him, while we have cheeto’s, video games and dads old pornos as we pore over baseball stats to find a pitching replacement at 3 o’clock in the morning in our moms basement.

dropping wong. was originally going to do it for nunez, but realizing i already have 2 2b/2 3rd base (gyorko is one of each)/1 C and 1st (goldy)/2 ss (brad miller is both 2b and ss)/ and 4 OF (with recently optained Hoes), i’m realizing i can just grab the best player. 1 util spot so a 5th OF is likely superfluous unless choo has a bunch of lefties at same time (he doesn’t this week)
nunez/chavez (need rbi’s on this team, and is backup 1st for goldy off days)/avisail/joyce are probably the best bets.

admittedly his average is depressed , but ,

times he has come to the plate with the bases cleared .
am smart enough to figure out that it’s at least 42 times ,
but i wonder how many 3rd outs that cabrera has made .

@Hondo: i remember saying how crazy that trade was for your opp (unless it was somebody else who also made that trade). Even if Harvey was slightly better he’d be done by playoffs. @Grey: :Loved that double steal with Eaton, who I guess I’m going to hold as a 3rd bench guy instead of dumping for a holds guy like I was thinking about doing.I’ll pare down from him,JUpton,Bruce,Venable and Khris when I really have to the last 2 weeks of September.I’ve also got Jeter and Halladay(who has almost no chance of sticking) stashed on the DL,even though they’re active now.McCuthcheon is the only OF guy guaranteed a spot(and Carpenter).I’m 25 games up in my 12 team 10×10 H2H.I decided there’s need to stress out over it with 2 weeks left ,then a bye week.Forget holds for now, there’s always a couple guys out there, which I’ll worry about later.I’ll give that cat up for now just to keep my schmohawks for now until I see who cools of or gets hurt.
I’m losing patience with Upton but have the luxury of seeing how he does in September. He doesn’t appear to be very bright, maybe he doesn’t realize it’s August and thinks it’s still July and will think September is August.

@Kratos: quintana just scares me sometimes. but the other 2 are fine, and depending on league size and your era/whip for the week all 3 could be doable.

this might sound odd but is bogosevic a better 4th OF in a 16 teamer if RBI’s are needed more than runs than the likes of hoes (currently on roster)/span/avisail/joyce? he’s hitting for solid amounts of extra base hits since the 20th, with playing time too.
